A Porous Covalent Organic Framework with Voided Square Grid Topology for Atmospheric Water Harvesting

Imaging and analysis of covalent organic framework crystallites on a carbon surface: a nanocrystalline scaly COF/nanotube hybrid

Synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is well-advanced but understanding their nanoscale structure and interaction with other materials remains a significant challenge. Here, we have developed a methodology for the detailed imaging and analysis of COF crystallites using carbon nanotube substrates for COF characterisation. Detailed investigation using powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy in conjunction with a local probe method, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), revealed details of COF growth and nucleation at the nanoscale. A boronate ester COF undergoes preferential growth in the a-b crystallographic plane under solvothermal conditions. Carbon nanotubes were found to not impact the mode of COF growth, but the crystallites on nanotubes were smaller than COF crystallites not on supports. COF crystalline regions with sizes of tens of nanometres exhibited preferred orientation on nanotube surfaces, where the c-axis is oriented between 50 and 90° relative to the carbon surface. The COF/nanotube hybrid structure was found to be more complex than the previously suggested concentric core-shell model and can be better described as a nanocrystalline scaly COF/nanotube hybrid.

Shining New Light on the Kinetics of Water Uptake by Organic Aerosol Particles

The uptake of water vapor by various organic aerosols is important in a number of applications ranging from medical delivery of pharmaceutical aerosols to cloud formation in the atmosphere. The coefficient that describes the probability that the impinging gas-phase molecule sticks to the surface of interest is called the mass accommodation coefficient, α_M. Despite the importance of this coefficient for the description of water uptake kinetics, accurate values are still lacking for many systems. In this Feature Article, we present various experimental techniques that have been evoked in the literature to study the interfacial transport of water and discuss the corresponding strengths and limitations. This includes our recently developed technique called photothermal single-particle spectroscopy (PSPS). The PSPS technique allows for a retrieval of α_M values from three independent, yet simultaneous measurements operating close to equilibrium, providing a robust assessment of interfacial mass transport. We review the currently available data for α_M for water on various organics and discuss the few studies that address the temperature and relative humidity dependence of α_M for water on organics. The knowledge of the latter, for example, is crucial to assess the water uptake kinetics of organic aerosols in the Earth's atmosphere. Finally, we argue that PSPS might also be a viable method to better restrict the α_M value for water on liquid water.

Rational design of isostructural 2D porphyrin-based covalent organic frameworks for tunable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Covalent organic frameworks have recently gained increasing attention in photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water. However, their structure-property-activity relationship, which should be beneficial for the structural design, is still far-away explored. Herein, we report the designed synthesis of four isostructural porphyrinic two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (MPor-DETH-COF, M = H₂, Co, Ni, Zn) and their photocatalytic activity in hydrogen generation. Our results clearly show that all four covalent organic frameworks adopt AA stacking structures, with high crystallinity and large surface area. Interestingly, the incorporation of different transition metals into the porphyrin rings can rationally tune the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of corresponding covalent organic frameworks, with the order of CoPor-DETH-COF < H₂Por-DETH-COF < NiPor-DETH-COF < ZnPor-DETH-COF. Based on the detailed experiments and calculations, this tunable performance can be mainly explained by their tailored charge-carrier dynamics via molecular engineering. This study not only represents a simple and effective way for efficient tuning of the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activities of covalent organic frameworks at molecular level, but also provides valuable insight on the structure design of covalent organic frameworks for better photocatalysis.

H2S Stability of Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Computational Assessment

The H₂S stability of a range of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was systematically assessed by first-principles calculations. The most likely degradation mechanism was first determined and we identified the rate constant of the degradation reaction as a reliable descriptor for characterizing the H₂S stability of MOFs. A qualitative H₂S stability ranking was thus established for the list of investigated materials. Structure-stability relationships were further envisaged considering several variables including the nature of the linkers and their grafted functional groups, the pore size, the nature of metal sites, and the presence/nature of coordinatively unsaturated sites. This knowledge enabled the anticipation of the H₂S stability of one prototypical MOF, e.g., MIL-91(Ti), which has been previously proposed as a good candidate for CO₂ capture. This computational strategy enables an accurate and easy handling assessment of the H₂S stability of MOFs and offers a solid alternative to experimental characterizations that require the manipulation of a highly toxic and corrosive molecule.

Guest-dependent single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations in porous adamantane-bearing macrocycles

An adamantane-bearing macrocycle exhibited permanent intrinsic porosity and adsorption of small guests in single-crystal-to-single-crystal fashions. The guest capture resulted in the structural transformations of supramolecular organic frameworks.

Covalent organic frameworks as emerging host platforms for enzyme immobilization and robust biocatalysis - A review

In recent years, the synthesis and application of green and sustainable products have become global ecological and societal issues. Based on the principles of green chemistry, the application of different biocatalysts not only produce target products and decreases side effects but also enhances the selectivity and activity. Enzyme-based biocatalysts are very interesting due to their high catalytic performance, eco-friendly reaction systems, and selectivity. Immobilization is demonstrated as a favorable approach to improve the stability and recyclability of enzymes. Among different supports, porous and crystalline materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), represent an interesting class of support matrices for the immobilization of different enzymes. Owing to tunable physicochemical characteristics, a high degree of crystallinity, large specific surface area, superior adsorption capacity, pre-designable structure and marked stability, COFs might consider as perfect host materials for improving the desirable properties of enzymes, such as poor stability, low operational range, lack of repeatability, and products/by-products inhibition for large-scale applications. The enzyme-incorporated COFs have emerged as one of the hopeful ways to constitute tailor-made biocatalytic systems, which can be employed in an array of reactions. Highly porous nature of many COFs led to increased process output in contrast to other micro/nanoparticles. The enzymes can be integrated into COFs through different techniques, including physical adsorption and direct covalent attachment between the enzyme molecules and COFs or through a cross-linking agent. Herein, we discuss and highlight the synthesis methods, properties, and functionalization of COFs and the recent literature for the application of these materials in enzymes immobilization. Main approaches for immobilization of enzymes into COFs and the catalytic applications of these materials are also presented. This study offers new avenues to address the limitations of traditional enzyme immobilization supports as well as delivers new possibilities to construct smart biocatalytic systems for diverse biotechnological applications.

Introducing reticular chemistry into agrochemistry

For survival and quality of life, human society has sought more productive, precise, and sustainable agriculture. Agrochemistry, which solves farming issues in a chemical manner, is the core engine that drives the evolution of modern agriculture. To date, agrochemistry has utilized chemical technologies in the form of pesticides, fertilizers, veterinary drugs and various functional materials to meet fundamental demands from human society, while increasing the socio-ecological consequences due to inefficient use. Thus, more useful, precise, and designable scaffolding materials are required to support sustainable agrochemistry. Reticular chemistry, which weaves molecular units into frameworks, has been applied in many fields based on two cutting-edge porous framework materials, namely metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs). With flexibility in composition, structure, and pore chemistry, MOFs and COFs have shown increasing functionalities associated with agrochemistry in the last decade, potentially introducing reticular chemistry as a highly accessible chemical toolbox into agrochemical technologies. In this critical review, we will demonstrate how reticular chemistry shapes the future of agrochemistry in the fields of farm sensing, agro-ecological preservation and reutilization, agrochemical formulations, smart indoor farming, agrobiotechnology, and beyond.

Untangling the Mechanochromic Properties of Benzothiadiazole-Based Luminescent Polymorphs through Supramolecular Organic Framework Topology

Two new luminophore polymorphs of 4-bromo-7-(4-nonylphenyl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (1α and 1β) exhibiting different color emissions, which switch into each other in response to shear force and solvent vapors, are presented and their X-ray structure is determined. Supramolecular organic framework topology (SOFT) studies on the two polymorphic structures led us to conclude that the mechanochromic phase transformation can be explained on the basis of modifications in their respective topological nets: mab and pcu for 1α and 1β, respectively, as a result of the breaking and restoration of a number of weak supramolecular interactions. The color changes accompanying this transformation have been rationalized with the help of time-dependent density functional theory. We firmly believe that our findings will inspire future research on the design of novel stimuli-responsive organic materials with switchable properties based on their supramolecular interactions by establishing clear SOFT-property relationships.

3D Cage COFs: A Dynamic Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework with High-Connectivity Organic Cage Nodes

Three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are rare because there is a limited choice of organic building blocks that offer multiple reactive sites in a polyhedral geometry. Here, we synthesized an organic cage molecule (Cage-6-NH₂) that was used as a triangular prism node to yield the first cage-based 3D COF, 3D-CageCOF-1. This COF adopts an unreported 2-fold interpenetrated acs topology and exhibits reversible dynamic behavior, switching between a small-pore (sp) structure and a large-pore (lp) structure. It also shows high CO₂ uptake and captures water at low humidity (<40%). This demonstrates the potential for expanding the structural complexity of 3D COFs by using organic cages as the building units.

Water and Metal-Organic Frameworks: From Interaction toward Utilization

The steep stepwise uptake of water vapor and easy release at low relative pressures and moderate temperatures together with high working capacities make metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) attractive, promising materials for energy efficient applications in adsorption devices for humidity control (evaporation and condensation processes) and heat reallocation (heating and cooling) by utilizing water as benign sorptive and low-grade renewable or waste heat. Emerging MOF-based process applications covered are desiccation, heat pumps/chillers, water harvesting, air conditioning, and desalination. Governing parameters of the intrinsic sorption properties and stability under humid conditions and cyclic operation are identified. Transport of mass and heat in MOF structures, at least as important, is still an underexposed topic. Essential engineering elements of operation and implementation are presented. An update on stability of MOFs in water vapor and liquid systems is provided, and a suite of 18 MOFs are identified for selective use in heat pumps and chillers, while several can be used for air conditioning, water harvesting, and desalination. Most applications with MOFs are still in an exploratory state. An outlook is given for further R&D to realize these applications, providing essential kinetic parameters, performing smart engineering in the design of systems, and conceptual process designs to benchmark them against existing technologies. A concerted effort bridging chemistry, materials science, and engineering is required.

Applications of Dynamic Covalent Chemistry Concept towards Tailored Covalent Organic Framework Nanomaterials: A Review

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a rapidly developing class of materials that has been of immense research interest during the last ten years. Numerous reviews have been devoted to summarizing the synthesis and applications of COFs. However, the underlying dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC), which is the foundation of COFs synthesis, has never been systematically reviewed in this context. Dynamic covalent chemistry is the practice of using thermodynamic equilibriums to molecular assemblies. This Critical Review will cover the state-of-the-art use of DCC to both synthesize COFs and expand the applications of COFs. Five synthetic strategies for COF synthesis are rationalized, namely: modulation, mixed linker/linkage, sub-stoichiometric reaction, framework isomerism, and linker exchange, which highlight the dynamic covalent chemistry to regulate the growth and to modify the properties of COFs. Furthermore, the challenges in these approaches and potential future perspectives in the field of COF chemistry are also provided.

The mechanochemical Scholl reaction as a versatile synthesis tool for the solvent-free generation of microporous polymers

Herein we report the mechanochemical Scholl polymerization of 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene in a high speed ball mill. The reaction is conducted solvent-free, solely using solid FeCl3. The resulting porous polymer was obtained in >99% yield after very short reaction times of only 5 minutes and exhibits a high specific surface area of 658 m2 g-1, which could be further enhanced up to 990 m2 g-1 by liquid assisted grinding. Within this study we illuminate the origin of porosity by investigating the impact of various milling parameters and milling materials, temperature and pressure, and different liquids for LAG as well as post polymer milling. Finally we expand the procedure to different monomers and mills, to present the mechanochemical Scholl reaction as a versatile synthesis tool for porous polymers.
