A robust molecular platform for non-volatile memory devices with optical and magnetic responses

Reversible redox modulation of a lanthanide emissive molecular film

Herein we demonstrate redox switchable emission from a sensitised, europium-ferrocene containing, molecular film assembled by a novel nitrene-based strategy. Electrochemical modulation of europium emission upon switching the ferrocene moiety's redox state is ascribed to the reversible generation of a quenching ferrocenium species.

Kondo effect in a neutral and stable all organic radical single molecule break junction

Organic radicals are neutral, purely organic molecules exhibiting an intrinsic magnetic moment due to the presence of an unpaired electron in the molecule in its ground state. This property, added to the low spin-orbit coupling and weak hyperfine interactions, make neutral organic radicals good candidates for molecular spintronics insofar as the radical character is stable in solid state electronic devices. Here we show that the paramagnetism of the polychlorotriphenylmethyl radical molecule in the form of a Kondo anomaly is preserved in two- and three-terminal solid-state devices, regardless of mechanical and electrostatic changes. Indeed, our results demonstrate that the Kondo anomaly is robust under electrodes displacement and changes of the electrostatic environment, pointing to a localized orbital in the radical as the source of magnetism. Strong support to this picture is provided by density functional calculations and measurements of the corresponding nonradical species. These results pave the way toward the use of all-organic neutral radical molecules in spintronics devices and open the door to further investigations into Kondo physics.

Thermal and optical control of electronic states in a single layer of switchable paramagnetic molecules

The control of the charge distribution in a monolayer of switchable cobalt-dioxolene complexes undergoing Valence Tautomerism (VT) has been achieved by means of thermal and optical stimuli. Thiol-derivatised VT molecules have been grafted on polycrystalline gold surface as monolayers from solution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ions mass spectrometry evidenced the formation of a covalent bond between intact VT molecules and the surface and excluded the presence of physisorbed molecules. X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that the temperature- and light-induced conversion profiles of the monolayer closely reproduce the ones found for the crystalline phase. This study demonstrates that a wet chemistry based approach allows to transfer switchable paramagnetic molecules at the nanoscale, widening the playground to develop new hybrid molecular based architectures for novel technologies.

Three-state near-infrared electrochromism at the molecular scale

Self-assembled monolayer films of a cyclometalated ruthenium complex with a redox-active amine substituent and three carboxylic acid groups have been prepared on ITO electrode surfaces. The obtained thin films show three-state electrochromic switching with low electrochemical potential inputs and high near-infrared absorbance outputs. Thanks to the long retention time of each oxidation states, these films have been used to demonstrate surface-confined flip-flop memory functions with high ON/OFF ratios at the molecular scale.

A 2D semiconductor-self-assembled monolayer photoswitchable diode

A switchable diode in a 2D semiconductor-molecular junction heterostructure is reported. MoS2 is exfoliated on top of a monolayer of azobenzene-substituted thiols on gold. Photoisomerization of the azobenzenes results in switching between a rectifier with rectifying ratios of 10(4) and a conductive state, as revealed by conducting atomic force microscopy.

Structural control over spin localization in triarylmethyls

Using density functional theory calculations we demonstrate the existence of a general relation between structure and spin localisation in an important class of organic radicals, and point towards its potential use in future applications.

Photoactive molecular junctions based on self-assembled monolayers of indoline dyes

We demonstrate the feasibility of a photodetector based on an ensemble molecular junction, where a self-assembled monolayer of an organic donor-acceptor dye is directly sandwiched between two electrodes. In such a device, upon photoexcitation and generation of a charge-transfer state on the molecule, charges are dissociated and directly collected at the electrodes without the need of transport through a bulk phase, as in usual photodetectors. We show that the device can work in photovoltaic regime and the spectral response can be tuned by varying the light absorbing dye. Therefore, the electro-optical properties of the downscaled device can be unambiguously related to the physical-chemical properties of the molecules, a commonly difficult point to demonstrate in a molecular junction device, because of the uncertainties of the interplay between molecules and electrodes. The proposed device, which relies on a simple self-assembly process, has a strong potentiality for fast responding, downscaled detectors, ultimately limited by charge dissociation dynamics, and can be considered also as a useful tool to investigate fundamental electro-optical processes in molecular monolayers.

Hydrogen bonded anion ribbons, networks and clusters and sulfur-anion interactions in novel radical cation salts of BEDT-TTF with sulfamate, pentaborate and bromide

The novel radical cation salt (BEDT-TTF)3(sulfamate)2·2H2O (BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene) is semiconducting with donor stacks comprised of pairs of partially oxidized molecules and a single more highly oxidized molecule which is twisted out of the stack by ca. 30°. Hydrogen bonded pairs of sulfamate ions are linked into parallel ribbons by further hydrogen bonding between sulfamates and bridging water molecules. In contrast, the BEDT-TTF salt with pentaborate contains infinite layers formed of a network of hydrogen bonded pentaborate anions. Two new bromide salts of BEDT-TTF are reported, one is a semiconducting 1 : 1 salt in which the bromide is integrated among the BEDT-TTF donors, while the other contain a square of four bromide ions linked together by hydrogen bonding to a centrally located H5O2(+) cation for every five BEDT-TTF molecules.

Robust spin crossover platforms with synchronized spin switch and polymer phase transition

The idea of developing magnetic molecular materials into real functional electronic devices with low-cost and scalable techniques appeared with the emergence of the field several years ago. Today, even though great advances have been done with this aim, the promise of a functional device working at the micro-/nanoscale and at room temperature has unfortunately not completely materialized yet, as their use still strongly depends on the fabrication methodology of a robust device that can be handled and integrated without compromising their functionality. Here we propose the use of polymeric matrices as a platform for the development of such robust switchable structures exhibiting reproducible results independently of the dimension -from macro to micro-/nanoscale- and morphology -from thin-films to nanoparticles and nanoimprinted motives- while allowing to induce an irreversible hysteresis, reminiscent of a non-volatile memory, by synchronization with the polymer phase transition.

Electrografting of calix[4]arenediazonium salts to form versatile robust platforms for spatially controlled surface functionalization

An essential issue in the development of materials presenting an accurately functionalized surface is to achieve control of layer structuring. Whereas the very popular method based on the spontaneous adsorption of alkanethiols on metal faces stability problems, the reductive electrografting of aryldiazonium salts yielding stable interface, struggles with the control of the formation and organization of monolayers. Here we report a general strategy for patterning surfaces using aryldiazonium surface chemistry. Calix[4]tetra-diazonium cations generated in situ from the corresponding tetra-anilines were electrografted on gold and carbon substrates. The well-preorganized macrocyclic structure of the calix[4]arene molecules allows the formation of densely packed monolayers. Through adequate decoration of the small rim of the calixarenes, functional molecules can then be introduced on the immobilized calixarene subunits, paving the way for an accurate spatial control of the chemical composition of a surface at molecular level.

Nanoscale assembly of paramagnetic organic radicals on Au(111) single crystals

The successful thin-film deposition of a pyrene-substituted nitronyl nitroxide radical under controlled conditions has been demonstrated. The electronic properties, chemical environment at the interface, and morphology of the thin films have been investigated by a multitechnique approach. Spectroscopic and morphological analyses indicate a Stranski-Krastanov growth mode and weak physisorption of molecules onto the metallic surface. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy shows that evaporation processes and deposition do not affect the paramagnetic character of the molecules. Useful concepts for the engineering of new, purely organic-based magnets, which may open the way to fruitful exploitation of organic molecular-beam deposition for assembly on solid surfaces in view of future technological applications, are presented.

Chiral Conformation at a Molecular Level of a Propeller-Like Open-Shell Molecule on Au(111)

A key stage in engineering molecular functional organizations is represented by controlling the supramolecular assembly of single molecular building blocks, tectons, into ordered networks. Here, we show how an open-shell, propeller-like molecule has been deposited under UHV conditions on Au(111) and its supramolecular organization characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Racemic islands were observed at room temperature, and their chirality was imaged at the molecular level at low temperature. Modeling further suggests that the observed chirally alternating ordering dominated by intermolecular interactions is energetically favored. Electron paramagnetic resonance and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy evidences suggest that the supramolecular networks may preserve the open-shell character of the tecton. These results represent a fundamental step forward toward the engineering of purely organic spintronic devices.

Photochemical grafting and patterning of organic monolayers on indium tin oxide substrates

Covalently attached organic layers on indium tin oxide (ITO) surfaces were prepared by the photochemical grafting with 1-alkenes. The surface modification was monitored with static water contact angle, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. Hydrophobic methyl-terminated ITO surfaces can be obtained via the grafting of tetradec-1-ene, whereas the attachment of ω-functionalized 1-alkenes leads to functionalized ITO surfaces. The use of a C≡C-Ge(CH(3))(3) terminus allows for facile tagging of the surface with an azido group via a one-pot deprotection/click reaction, resulting in bio/electronically active interfaces. The combination of nonaggressive chemicals (alkenes), mild reaction conditions (room temperature), and a light-induced grafting that facilitates the direct patterning of organic layers makes this simple approach highly promising for the development of ITO-based (bio)electronic devices.

A programmable single-component diode based on an ambipolar organic field-effect transistor (OFET)

An ambipolar field-effect transistor (FET) based on tetracyanoquarterthienoquinoid (TCT4Q) was constructed. When a set of source, drain, and gate voltages were applied to a thin film of TCT4Q at temperatures lower than 150 K, both positive and negative carriers were trapped and frozen even after removal of the gate voltage. The frozen carriers worked as a floating gate with the gradient by creating a PN(NP) junction through the injection of oppositely charged “mobile” carriers. The device exhibited a distinct rectifying effect when an alternating current (50 < f <500 mHz) was applied through the source and drain electrodes. Moreover, the function of the molecular device is programmable and erasable.

Multichannel molecular switch with a surface-confined electroactive radical exhibiting tunable wetting properties

A multichannel surface molecular switch based on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold of a novel polychlorotriphenylmethyl radical has been fabricated. These SAMs are electrically commutable between two stable redox states that reveal distinct magnetic, optical, and wetting properties that can be employed as read-out mechanisms. The high stability and reversibility of systems like the one reported here further supports the vision of using molecules in the electronic devices of the future.
