Charge Transport in Twisted Organic Semiconductor Crystals of Modulated Pitch

Many molecular crystals (approximately one third) grow as twisted, helicoidal ribbons from the melt, and this preponderance is even higher in restricted classes of materials, for instance, charge-transfer complexes. Previously, twisted crystallites of such complexes present an increase in carrier mobilities. Here, the effect of twisting on charge mobility is better analyzed for a monocomponent organic semiconductor, 2,5-bis(3-dodecyl-2-thienyl)-thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (BDT), that forms twisted crystals with varied helicoidal pitches and makes possible a correlation of twist strength with carrier mobility. Films are analyzed by X-ray scattering and Mueller matrix polarimetry to characterize the microscale organization of the polycrystalline ensembles. Carrier mobilities of organic field-effect transistors are five times higher when the crystals are grown with the smallest pitches (most twisted), compared to those with the largest pitches, along the fiber elongation direction. A tenfold increase is observed along the perpendicular direction. Simulation of electrical potential based on scanning electron microscopy images and density functional theory suggests that the twisting-enhanced mobility is mainly controlled by the fiber organization in the film. A greater number of tightly packed twisted fibers separated by numerous smaller gaps permit better charge transport over the film surface compared to fewer big crystallites separated by larger gaps.

Thermally induced charge transfer in a quinoid-bridged linear Cu3 compound

Charge transfer always occurs in molecular valence tautomers, leading to the redistribution of electron density and exhibiting electrical, optical, and magnetic properties, and can be further controlled by multiple external stimuli such as temperature, light and electric field. The design of molecule-based materials capable of charge transfer remains a challenge. Herein, a linear Cu₃ compound [(CH₃)₃NCH₂CH₂Br]₂[Cu₃L₄(H₂O)₂] (H₂L = chloranilic acid) (1) with a multi-center donor-acceptor architecture was constructed using the redox-active chloranilic acid quinoid ligand. Temperature-dependent dielectric measurement was performed to capture the charge transfer valence tautomer transition because it is difficult to detect this transition by crystal structure and magnetism analysis. Temperature-dependent XPS and EPR further confirmed that the charge transfer valence tautomer transition is based on the Cu^II-L^2- to Cu^I-L^-˙ multi-center charge transfer. Thus, the present work builds a charge transfer compound with a multi-center donor-acceptor architecture and proves that dielectric measurement is a very effective means to detect charge transfer.

Chlorine Substitution in Spirocyclic Derivatives Triggers SHG Response in Noncentrosymmetric Crystal

Organic-inorganic hybrid phase transition materials with switchable properties have important potential applications in smart devices such as dielectric switches and storage. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to modify molecular structures efficiently to obtain materials simultaneously possessing multiple responsive properties. Herein, different from ordinary halogen substitutions in Metal Halide, we report a halogen regulation design of organic molecular strategy: (ASD) 2 MnBr 4 (ASD=5-azonia-spiro [4.5] decane) to (CASD) 2 MnBr 4 (CASD=8-chloro-5-azonia-spiro [4.5] decane). After organic molecular halogen regulation, the SHG response was excited and the dielectric phase transition temperature ( T c ) has also been greatly improved. Furthermore, under the irradiation of UV lamp, both showed green light with quantum yields above 50%. This work is of great significance for further exploration of multifunctional molecular switch materials through halogen modification strategies.

Redox-Programmable Spin-Crossover Behaviors in a Cationic Framework

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide versatile platforms to construct multi-responsive materials. Herein, by introducing the neutral tetradentate ligand and the linear dicyanoaurate(I) anion, we reported a rare cationic MOF [Fe^II(TPB){Au^I(CN)₂}]I·4H₂O·4DMF (TPB = 1,2,4,5-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)benzene) with hysteretic spin-crossover (SCO) behavior near room temperature. This hybrid framework with an open metal site (Au^I) exhibits redox-programmable capability toward dihalogen molecules. By means of post-synthetic modification, all the linear [Au^I(CN)₂]^- linkers can be oxidized to square planar [Au^III(CN)₂X₂]^- units, which results in the hysteretic SCO behaviors switching from one-step to two-step for Br₂ and three-step for I₂. More importantly, the stepwise SCO behaviors can go back to one-step via the reduction by l-ascorbic acid (AA). Periodic DFT calculations using various SCAN-type exchange-correlation functionals have been employed to rationalize the experimental data. Hence, these results demonstrate for the first time that switchable one-/two-/three-stepped SCO dynamics can be manipulated by chemical redox reactions, which opens a new perspective for multi-responsive molecular switches.

Ultrasensitive Detection of Biomarkers in a Color-Switchable Microcavity-Reactor Laser

Early detection and diagnosis are vitally important in reducing the mortality rate of fatal diseases but require highly sensitive detection of biomarkers. Presently, detection methods with the highest sensitivity require in vitro processing, while in vivo compatible fluorescence detections require a much higher concentration of biomarkers or limit of detection (LOD). In this paper, a fundamentally new strategy for ultrasensitive detection based on color-switchable lasing with a cavity-enhanced reduction of LOD is demonstrated, down to 1.4 × 10-16  mg ml-1 for a quantitative detection, lower than both the fluorescence method and plasmonic enhanced method. For a qualitative or a yes/no type of detection, the LOD is as low as 10-17  mg ml-1 . The approach in this work is based on a dye-embedded, in vivo compatible, polystyrene-sphere cavity, penetrable by biomarkers. A polystyrene sphere serves the dual roles of a laser cavity and an in vivo bio-reactor, in which dye molecules react with a biomarker, reporting biomarker information through lasing signals. The cavity-enhanced emission and lasing with only a single biomarker molecule per cavity allow improved visual distinguishability via color changes. Furthermore, when combined with a narrow-band filter, the color-switchable lasers act as an "on-off" logic signal and can be integrated into multiplexing detection assay biochips.

Spin transitions in ferric catecholate complexes mediated by outer-sphere counteranions

A family of ionic ferric catecholate complexes 1-4 bearing a disubstituted 3,6-di-tert-butyl-catecholate ligand (3,6-DBCatH₂) and tetradentate tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA) was prepared and its spin transitions were investigated. Variation of the outer-sphere counteranions (PF₆, BPh₄, ClO₄, BF₄) is accompanied by changes in the magnetic behavior of the compounds under consideration. The crystal structures of complexes 1, 3 and 4 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis at 100 K and 293 K. The complexes were characterized by the occurrence of a thermally induced spin-crossover process in the solid state with different degrees of completeness, which was confirmed by the comprehensive spectroscopic investigation (EPR, magnetic susceptibility, Mössbauer, and XAS) of the isolated compounds. Complex 4 containing BF₄ anions was found to demonstrate valence tautomeric transition along with spin-crossover. This finding makes compound 4 the first salt-like mononuclear ferric catecholate complex exhibiting valence tautomerism.

Two-in-One Approach toward White-Light Emissions of Dimeric B/N Lewis Pairs by Tuning the Ortho-Substitution Effect

A new family of dimeric B/N Lewis pairs with sterically tunable substitutions has been accomplished using the Two-in-One design strategy. Their structures are characteristic of doubly B/N-containing cores, and the electronic interactions between B and N centers can be modulated by the steric effects of ortho-substitutions from methyl groups. Interestingly, unique white-light emissions were achieved for 2M'2BNM and 1M2BNM, ascribed to the integration of two triarylborane species (B_sp²- and B_sp³-hybridization) into one single molecule.

Spin-State Modulation in FeII -Based Hofmann-Type Coordination Polymers: From Molecules to Materials

Spin crossover complexes that reversibly interconvert between two stable states imitate a binary state of 0 and 1, delivering a promising possibility to address the data processing concept in smart materials. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the modulation of magnetic transition between high spin and low spin and the factors responsible for stabilizing the spin states is an essential theme in modern materials design. In this context, the present review attempts to provide a concise outline of the design strategy employed at the molecular level for fine-tuning the spin-state switching in Fe^II -based Hofmann-type coordination polymers and their effects on the optical and magnetic response. In addition, development towards the nanoscale architectures of HCPs, i. e., in terms of nanoparticles and thin films, are emphasized to bridge the gap between the laboratory and reality.

Spectroscopic Tracking of Salicylideneaniline Photocolored Crystals: An Attempt to Quantify Polymorph-Dependent Features toward Precise Structure-Function Correlation Analysis

Three polymorphs of salicylideneaniline (SA) were prepared, and their photochromic behavior was examined using a recently developed single-crystal microscopic UV-vis spectroscopy approach. This system enabled us to acquire absorption data during the bleaching process as a function of temperature and visible light intensity. First, we demonstrated that, in contrast to the generally accepted assumption, the bleaching curves were notably influenced by the degree of photosaturation at the initial stage. By modifying our kinetic model to include the term representing the initial degree of photosaturation, we successfully obtained the kinetic parameters intrinsic to each crystal structure. Second, we further analyzed the kinetic parameters to show that the bleaching process was accelerated by visible light irradiation to a significantly higher degree than by thermal relaxation. The two bleaching-prompting effects were quantitatively compared between two photochromic polymorphs, α₁ and α₂; the long life of the photoproduct in α₂ was attributed to efficient self-shielding from visible light irradiation enabled by its structural features. These results prompted us to reexamine the simple dualistic photochemical and thermal classification of photochromic systems and will provide a foundation for the precise structure-function analysis of crystalline materials, including SAs.

Effect of Ligand Chain Length for Tuning of Molecular Dimensionality and Magnetic Relaxation in Redox Active Cobalt(II) EDOT Complexes (EDOT = 3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene)

Four cobalt(II) complexes, [Co(L1)2(NCX)2(MeOH)2] (X = S (1), Se (2)) and {[Co(L2)2(NCX)2]}n (X = S (3), Se (4)) (L1 = 2,5dipyridyl-3,4,-ethylenedioxylthiophene and L2 = 2,5diethynylpyridinyl-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), were synthesized by incorporating ethylenedioxythiophene based redox-active luminescence ligands. All these complexes have been well characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, spectroscopic and magnetic investigations. Magneto-structural studies showed that 1 and 2 adopt a mononuclear structure with CoN4O2 octahedral coordination geometry while 3 and 4 have a 2D [4 x 4] rhombic grid coordination networks (CNs) where each cobalt(II) center is in a CoN6 octahedral coordination environment. Static magnetic measurements reveal that all four complexes displayed a high spin (HS) (S = 3/2) state between 2 and 280 K which was further confirmed by X-band and Q-band EPR studies. Remarkably, along with the molecular dimensionality (0D and 2D) the modification in the axial coligands lead to a significant difference in the dynamic magnetic properties of the monomers and CNs at low temperatures. All complexes display slow magnetic relaxation behavior under an external dc magnetic field. For the complexes with NCS- as coligand observed higher energy barrier for spin reversal in comparison to the complexes with NCSe- as coligand, while mononuclear complex 1 exhibited a higher energy barrier than that of CN 3. Theoretical calculations at the DFT and CASSCF level of theory have been performed to get more insight into the electronic structure and magnetic properties of all four complexes.

Controllable multiple-step configuration transformations in a thermal/photoinduced reaction

Solid-state photochemical reactions of olefinic compounds have been demonstrated to represent powerful access to organic cyclic molecules with specific configurations. However, the precise control of the stereochemistry in these reactions remains challenging owing to complex and fleeting configuration transformations. Herein, we report a unique approach to control the regiospecific configurations of C = C groups and the intermediates by varying temperatures in multiple-step thermal/photoinduced reactions, thus successfully realizing reversible ring closing/opening changes using a single-crystal coordination polymer platform. All stereochemical transitions are observed by in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations allow us to rationalize the mechanism of the synergistic thermal/photoinduced transformations. This approach can be generalized to the analysis of the possible configuration transformations of functional groups and intermediates and unravel the detailed mechanism for any inorganic, organic and macromolecular reactions susceptible to incorporation into single-crystal coordination polymer platforms.

Exceptionally high work density of a ferroelectric dynamic organic crystal around room temperature

Dynamic organic crystals are rapidly gaining traction as a new class of smart materials for energy conversion, however, they are only capable of very small strokes (<12%) and most of them operate through energetically cost-prohibitive processes at high temperatures. We report on the exceptional performance of an organic actuating material with exceedingly large stroke that can reversibly convert energy into work around room temperature. When transitioning at 295–305 K on heating and at 265–275 K on cooling the ferroelectric crystals of guanidinium nitrate exert a linear stroke of 51%, the highest value observed with a reversible operation of an organic single crystal actuator. Their maximum force density is higher than electric cylinders, ceramic piezoactuators, and electrostatic actuators, and their work capacity is close to that of thermal actuators. This work demonstrates the hitherto untapped potential of ionic organic crystals for applications such as light-weight capacitors, dielectrics, ferroelectric tunnel junctions, and thermistors.

Organic electronics requires dynamic materials, however, most of them have small strokes and operate at high temperatures. Here, the authors describe organic crystal that repeatedly expands and contracts nearly half its length around room temperature.

Impact of counter anions on spin-state switching of manganese(III) complexes containing an azobenzene ligand

Four mononuclear manganese(III) complexes coordinated with photo-active hexadentate azobenzene ligands, [Mn(5azo-sal₂-323)](X) (X = Cl, 1; X = BF₄, 2; X = ClO₄, 3; X = PF₆, 4), were prepared. The impact of various counter anions on the stabilization and switching of the spin state of the manganese(III) center was explored through detailed magneto-structural investigation using variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, and spectroelectrochemical studies, along with theoretical calculations. All four complexes consisted of an isostructural monocationic distorted octahedral MnN₄O₂ coordination environment offered by the hexadentate ligand and Cl^-, BF₄^-, ClO₄^-, and PF₆^- as counter anions respectively. Complex 1 with a spherical Cl^- counter anion showed a reversible and gradual spin-state switching between low-spin (LS) (S = 1) and high-spin (HS) (S = 2) states above 400 K, where non-covalent cation-anion interactions played a significant role in stabilizing the LS state. While, irrespective of the shape of the counter anion, complexes 2-4 remained in the HS state throughout the measured temperature range of 300-2 K, where strong π-π interaction between the azobenzene motifs among cationic units played a substantial role in stabilizing the HS state. Furthermore, magnetic data analyses revealed significantly large zero-field splitting in the S = 1 state for 1 (D = 19.4 cm^-1, E/D = 0.008) in comparison with that in the S = 2 state for 2-4 (D = 3.99-4.97 cm^-1, E/D = 0.002-0.195). Spectroelectrochemical investigations revealed the quasi-reversible reduction and oxidation of the manganese(III) center to manganese(II) and manganese(IV), respectively. A detailed theoretical calculation at the DFT and CASSCF level of theory was carried out to better understand the magneto-structural correlation.

Achieving large thermal hysteresis in an anthracene-based manganese(II) complex via photo-induced electron transfer

Achieving magnetic bistability with large thermal hysteresis is still a formidable challenge in material science. Here we synthesize a series of isostructural chain complexes using 9,10-anthracene dicarboxylic acid as a photoactive component. The electron transfer photochromic Mn²⁺ and Zn²⁺ compounds with photogenerated diradicals are confirmed by structures, optical spectra, magnetic analyses, and density functional theory calculations. For the Mn²⁺ analog, light irradiation changes the spin topology from a single Mn²⁺ ion to a radical-Mn²⁺ single chain, further inducing magnetic bistability with a remarkably wide thermal hysteresis of 177 K. Structural analysis of light irradiated crystals at 300 and 50 K reveals that the rotation of the anthracene rings changes the Mn1–O2–C8 angle and coordination geometries of the Mn²⁺ center, resulting in magnetic bistability with this wide thermal hysteresis. This work provides a strategy for constructing molecular magnets with large thermal hysteresis via electron transfer photochromism.

Achieving magnetic bistability with large thermal hysteresis is still a challenge in material science. Here, the authors report a Mn(II) chain complex that enables light-induced magnetic bistability with a 177 K thermal hysteresis loop.

A series of dynamic single crystals of [MII(en)3]SO4 (M = Ni, Mn, and Cd) shows tunable dielectric properties and anisotropic thermal expansion

A series of dynamic single crystals with a chemical formula of [M^II(en)₃]SO₄ (en = ethylene and M^II = Ni^II, Mn^II, and Cd^II) was synthesized. As the temperature decreases, these materials exhibit dielectric switching in the vicinity of the phase transition point accompanied by anisotropic thermal expansion in the cell parameters as a consequence of the order-disorder structural change of SO2-4 in a cavity surrounded by five [M^II(en)₃]²⁺ complex cations. Because the variation of metal centers with different ionic radii changes the shape of the complex cation, which affects the distribution of hydrogen-bond interactions around the SO2-4, the dynamic motion of SO2-4 is substantially tuned. Correspondingly, the dielectric properties and anisotropic thermal expansion of materials were largely shifted, especially in the single crystals of [Mn^II(en)₃]SO₄, whose structural change is distinctly different from the crystals of Ni(II) and Cd(II). The detailed structural mechanism accounting for the different physical properties of these materials was discussed.

[AuI(CN)2]-Armed [FeIII2FeII2] Square Complex Showing Unusual Spin-Crossover Behavior Due to a Symmetry-Breaking Phase Transition

The incorporation of two different cyanide building blocks of [(Tp^R)Fe^III(CN)₃]^- and [Au^I(CN)₂]^- into one molecule afforded a novel hexanuclear [Fe^III₂Fe^II₂Au^I₂] complex (1·2Et₂O), in which the cyanide-bridged [Fe^III₂Fe^II₂] square was further grafted by two [Au^I(CN)₂]^- fragments as long arms in syn orientations. Complex 1·2Et₂O undergoes a gradual spin crossover (SCO) ffrom low-spin (LS) to high-spin (HS) state for the Fe(II) centers upon desolvation. Remarkably, its desolvated phase (1) exhibits a reversible but atypical two-step (sharp-gradual) SCO behavior with considerable hysteresis (21 K). Variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray structural studies reveal that the hysteretic spin transition takes place synchronously with the concerted displacive motions of the molecules, representing another rare example including multistep and hysteretic spin transitions due to the synergetic SCO and structural phase transition.

Iron(III) Complexes of a Hexadentate Thioether-Appended 2-Aminophenol Ligand: Redox-Driven Spin State Switchover

A green complex [Fe(L³)] (1), supported by the deprotonated form of a hexadentate noninnocent redox-active thioether-appended 2-aminophenolate ligand (H₄L³ = N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-2,2'-diamino(diphenyldithio)ethane), has been synthesized and structurally characterized at 100(2) K and 298(2) K. In CH₂Cl₂, 1 displays two oxidative and a reductive one-electron redox processes at E_1/2 values of -0.52 and 0.20 V, and -0.85 V versus the Fc⁺/Fc redox couple, respectively. The one-electron oxidized 1⁺ and one-electron reduced 1^- forms, isolated as a blackish-blue solid 1(PF₆)·CH₂Cl₂ (2) and a gray solid [Co(η⁵-C₅H₅)₂]1·DMF (3), have been structurally characterized at 100(2) K. Structural parameters at 100 K of the ligand backbone and metrical oxidation state values unambiguously establish the electronic states as [Fe^III{(L^AP_O,N)^2-}{(L^ISQ_O,N)^•-}{(L_S,S)⁰}] (1) (two tridentate halves are electronically asymmetric-ligand mixed-valency), [Fe^III{(L^ISQ_O,N)^•-}{(L^ISQ_O,N)^•-}{(L_S,S)⁰}]⁺ (1⁺), and [Fe^III{(L^AP_O,N)^2-}{(L^AP_O,N)^2-}{(L_S,S)⁰}]^- (1^-) [dianionic 2-amidophenolate(2-) (L^AP_O,N)^2- and monoanionic 2-iminobenzosemiquinonate(1-) π-radical (S_rad = 1/2) (L^ISQ)^•- redox level]. Mössbauer spectral data of 1 at 295, 200, and 80 K reveal that it has a major low-spin (ls)-Fe(III) and a minor ls-Fe(II) component (redox isomers), and at 7 K, the major component exists exclusively. Thus, in 1, the occurrence of a thermally driven valence-tautomeric (VT) equilibrium (asymmetric) [Fe^III{(L^AP_O,N)^2-}{(L^ISQ_O,N)^•-}{(L_S,S)⁰}] ⇌ (symmetric) [Fe^II{(L^ISQ_O,N)^•-}{(L^ISQ_O,N)^•-}{(L_S,S)⁰}] (80-295 K) is implicated. Mössbauer spectral parameters unequivocally establish that 1⁺ is a ls-Fe(III) complex. In contrast, the monoanion 1^- contains a high-spin (hs)-Fe(III) center (S_Fe = 5/2), as is deduced from its Mössbauer and EPR spectra. Complexes 1-3 possess total spin ground states S_t = 0, 1/2, and 5/2, respectively, based on ¹H NMR and EPR spectra, the variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic behavior of 2, and the μ_eff value of 3 at 300 K. Broken-symmetry density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP-level of theory reveal that the unpaired electron in 1⁺/2 is due to the (L^ISQ)^•- redox level [ls-Fe(III) (S_Fe = 1/2) is strongly antiferromagnetically coupled to one of the (L^ISQ)^•- radicals (S_rad = 1/2)], and 1^-/3 is a hs-Fe(III) complex, supported by (L³)^4- with two-halves in the (L^AP)^2- redox level. Complex 1 can have either a symmetric or asymmetric electronic state. As per DFT calculation, the former state is stabilized by -3.9 kcal/mol over the latter (DFT usually stabilizes electronically symmetric structure). Time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations shed light on the origin of observed UV-vis-NIR spectral absorptions for 1-3 and corroborate the results of spectroelectrochemical experiments (300-1100 nm) on 1 (CH₂Cl₂; 298 K). Variable-temperature (218-298 K; CH₂Cl₂) absorption spectral (400-1000 nm) studies on 1 justify the presence of VT equilibrium in the solution-state.

Discovery of Kinetic Effect in a Valence Tautomeric Cobalt-Dioxolene Complex

Two isostructural valence tautomeric (VT) complexes with different critical temperatures were prepared and fully investigated through a series of magnetic, structural, spectral, and differential scanning calorimetry evidence. The kinetic effect in the VT complex was observed for the first time through scan-rate-dependent studies and further validated by annealing tests.

One-Step versus Two-Step Valence Tautomeric Transitions in Tetraoxolene-Bridged Dinuclear Cobalt Compounds

The syntheses of valence tautomeric compounds with multistep transitions using new redox-active ligands are the long-term goal of the field of bistable materials. The redox-active tetraoxolene ligand, 2,7-di-tert-butylpyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (pyrene^Q-Q), is now developed to synthesize a pair of dinuclear compounds {[CoL₂]₂(pyrene^Sq-Sq)}[Co(CO)₄]₂·xCH₂Cl₂·2C₆H₅CH₃ (1, x = 2, L = 1,10-phenanthroline, phen; 2, x = 1.5, L = 2,2'-bipyridine, bpy). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibilities and single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements indicate a partial one-step valence tautomeric transition for 1 and a rare two-step valence tautomeric transition for 2, respectively. DFT calculation results are consistent with the experimental data, revealing the correlation between thermodynamic parameters and the one-step/two-step valence tautomeric behaviors.

Cation modulated spin state and near room temperature transition within a family of compounds containing the same [FeL2]2- center

Spin-crossover (SCO) active compounds have received much attention due to their potential application in molecular devices. Herein, a family of solvent-free Fe^II compounds, formulated as (A)₂[FeL₂], (H₂L = pyridine-2,6-bi-tetrazolate, A = (Me)₄N⁺1, Et₂NH₂⁺2, ⁱPr₂NH₂⁺3 and ⁱPrNH₃⁺4), were synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that 1-4 are all supramolecular frameworks containing the same [FeL₂]^2- center, which is arranged into two packing modes via inter-molecular interactions, that is, a 3D architecture in 1 and 1D chain in 2-4. The spin states of 1-4 at different temperatures are assigned on the basis of the single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. Solid state magnetic investigations indicate that 1 and 4 exhibit a low spin state (below 350 K) and high spin state (2-400 K), respectively. 2 and 3 display clear SCO behavior in the measured temperature, but with different profiles and critical temperatures. 2 undergoes a complete gradual SCO with a critical temperature of T_1/2 = 260 K. 3 has an abrupt near room temperature transition between T_{1/2 cooling} = 278 K and T_{1/2 warming} = 286, centered at 282 K (9 °C). This study reveals the importance of organic cations in the modulation of SCO behavior and offers a new insight for the design of SCO compounds with near room temperature spin transitions.

Light-Induced Color Switching of Single Metal-Organic Framework Nanocrystals

Photoinduced modulation of the optical parameters of nanomaterials underlies the operating principles of all-optical nanodevices. Here, we demonstrate the laser-induced 10% modulation of the refractive index and 16-fold modulation of the extinction coefficient of the dynamic metal-organic framework (HKUST-1) nanocrystals within the whole visible range. Using the laser-induced water sorption/desorption process inside HKUST-1, we have achieved size-dependent reversible tuning of brightness and color of its nanocrystals over the different spatial directions and color palette. The numerical analysis also confirmed the detected optical tuning through the evolution of optical spectra and directivity of the scattered light. The results of the work demonstrate the promising nature of the dynamic metal-organic frameworks for nonlinear optics and expand the library of chemically synthesized hybrid materials with light-controlled optical properties.

Above-Room-Temperature Ferroelastic Phase Transitions in Two Tetrafluoroborate-Based Hexagonal Molecular Perovskites

ABX₃-type molecular perovskites provide an important platform to tune phase transitions, via judiciously choosing A-, B-, and X-site components, to approach advanced functional materials for applications. Although tetrafluoroborate can act as X-site component to assemble ten instances of ABX₃ molecular perovskites, only two of them possess hexagonal perovskite structures. Herein, we report two tetrafluoroborate-based hexagonal molecular perovskites, A[Na(BF₄)₃], by judiciously choosing two different A-site cations: 1-methyl-1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1,4-diium (Hmdabco²⁺) for 1 and 1-methylpiperazine-1,4-diium (H₂mpz²⁺) for 2. They have high-temperature phases in the same space group (P6₃/mmc) revealing highly disordered A-site cations. Upon cooling, 1 undergoes two-step P6₃/mmc ↔ P3̅c1 ↔ P2₁/n transitions at 344 and 338 K, respectively, including a ferroelastic one (3̅mF2/m) accompanied by a spontaneous strain of 0.013. In contrast, the smaller H₂mpz²⁺ cation with more adoptable conformations induces a one-step sharp P6₃/mmc ↔ P2₁/c ferroelastic transition (6/mmmF2/m(s)) at 418 K in 2, leading to more significant symmetry breaking and a considerable spontaneous strain of 0.129. This study provides important clues to modulate structural phase transitions by tuning diverse components for the multicomponent dense hybrid crystals.

Optical microscopy imaging of the thermally-induced spin transition and isothermal multi-stepped relaxation in a low-spin stabilized spin-crossover material

The thermal spin transition and the photo-induced high-spin → low-spin relaxation of the prototypical [Fe(ptz)₆](BF₄)₂ spin-crossover compound (ptz = 1-propyltetrazole) diluted in the isostructural ruthenium host lattice [Ru(ptz)₆](BF₄)₂, which stabilizes the Fe(II) low-spin state, have been investigated. We demonstrate the presence of a crystallographic phase transition around 145 K (i.e. from the high-temperature ordered high-spin phase to a low-temperature disordered low-spin phase) upon slow cooling from room temperature. This crystallographic phase transition is decoupled from the thermal spin transition. A supercooled ordered low-spin phase is observed as in the pure Fe(II) analogue upon fast cooling. A similar order-disorder phase transition is also observed for pure [Ru(ptz)₆](BF₄)₂ but at relatively higher temperature (i.e. at around 150 K) without involving any spin transition. For Ru-diluted [Fe(ptz)₆]²⁺, the crystallographic phase transition as well as strong cooperative effects involving various degrees of elastic frustration are at the origin of stepped sigmoidal high-spin → low-spin relaxation curves, which are modelled in the framework of a classical mean field model, considering both the tunnelling and thermally activated regimes. Optical microscopy studies performed on two different single crystals showed the existence of hysteretic thermal transitions with slight domain formation, hardly visible in the static crystal images. This behavior is attributed to the double effect upon Ru dilution, which decreases the cooperative character of the transition and simultaneously reduces the optical contrast between the LS and HS states. Moreover, the transition temperature revealed to be slightly crystal dependent, highlighting the crucial role of the spatial distribution of Ru from one crystal to another, in addition to the well-known effects of crystal shape and size.

The construction of a two-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid double perovskite ferroelastic with a high Tc and narrow band gap

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid double perovskites have attracted extensive research interest for their fascinating physical properties, such as ferroelectricity, X-ray detection, light response and so on. In addition, ferroelastics, as an important branch of ferroic materials, exhibits wide prospects in mechanical switches, shape memory and templating electronic nanostructures. Here, we designed a 2D phase-transition double perovskite ferroelastic through a structurally progressive strategy. This evolution is core to our construction process from 0D to 1D and AgBi-based 2D. In this way, we successfully synthesized 2D lead-free ferroelastic (DPA)₄AgBiBr₈ (DPA = 2,2-dimethylpropan-1-aminium) with a high Curie temperature (T_c), which shows a narrower band gap than 0D (DPA)₄Bi₂Br₁₀ and 1D (DPA)₅Pb₂Br₉. Moreover, the mechanism of structural phase transition and molecular motion are fully characterized by temperature dependent solid-state NMR and single crystal XRD. (DPA)₄AgBiBr₈ injects power into the discovery of new ferroelastics or the construction and dimensional adjustment in new hybrid double perovskites.

By using a lead-free AgBi-based scheme, we successfully synthesized a two-dimensional double perovskite ferroelastic (DPA)₄AgBiBr₈ with high T_c of 375 K and a narrow band gap of 2.44 eV, where DPA is 2,2-dimethylpropan-1-aminium.
