Abstract
Benzimidazoles are important N-heteroaromatic compounds with various biological activities and pharmacological applications. Herein, we present the first iron-catalyzed selective synthesis of 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles via acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of primary alcohols with aromatic diamines. The tricarbonyl (η4-cyclopentadienone) iron complex catalyzed dehydrogenative cyclization, releasing water and hydrogen gas as by-products. The earth abundance and low toxicity of iron metal enable the provision of an eco-friendly and efficient catalytic method for the synthesis of benzimidazoles.

Abstract
Herein, we developed a simple iron-catalyzed system for the α-alkenylation of ketones using primary alcohols. Such acceptor-less dehydrogenative coupling (ADC) of alcohols resulted in the synthesis of a series of important α,β-unsaturated functionalized ketones, having aryl, heteroaryl, alkyl, nitro, nitrile and trifluoro-methyl, as well as halogen moieties, with excellent yields and selectivity. Initial mechanistic studies, including deuterium labeling experiments, determination of rate and order of the reaction, and quantitative determination of H2 gas, were performed. The overall transformations produce water and dihydrogen as byproducts.

Abstract
The development of base metal catalysts for industrially relevant amination and hydrogenation reactions by applying abundant and atom economical reagents continues to be important for the cost-effective and sustainable synthesis of amines which represent highly essential chemicals. In particular, the synthesis of primary amines is of central importance because these compounds serve as key precursors and central intermediates to produce value-added fine and bulk chemicals as well as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and materials. Here we report a Ni-triphos complex as the first Ni-based homogeneous catalyst for both reductive amination of carbonyl compounds with ammonia and hydrogenation of nitroarenes to prepare all kinds of primary amines. Remarkably, this Ni-complex enabled the synthesis of functionalized and structurally diverse benzylic, heterocyclic and aliphatic linear and branched primary amines as well as aromatic primary amines starting from inexpensive and easily accessible carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones) and nitroarenes using ammonia and molecular hydrogen. This Ni-catalyzed reductive amination methodology has been applied for the amination of more complex pharmaceuticals and steroid derivatives. Detailed DFT computations have been performed for the Ni-triphos based reductive amination reaction, and they revealed that the overall reaction has an inner-sphere mechanism with H2 metathesis as the rate-determining step. A Ni-triphos based homogeneous catalyst enabled the synthesis of all kinds of primary amines by reductive amination of carbonyl compounds with ammonia and hydrogenation of nitroarenes.![]()

Abstract
We report the first FeII -catalyzed biomimetic aerobic oxidation of alcohols. The principle of this oxidation, which involves several electron-transfer steps, is reminiscent of biological oxidation in the respiratory chain. The electron transfer from the alcohol to molecular oxygen occurs with the aid of three coupled catalytic redox systems, leading to a low-energy pathway. An iron transfer-hydrogenation complex was utilized as a substrate-selective dehydrogenation catalyst, along with an electron-rich quinone and an oxygen-activating Co(salen)-type complex as electron-transfer mediators. Various primary and secondary alcohols were oxidized in air to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones with this method in good to excellent yields.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of in situ generated cobalt nanoparticles from molecularly defined complexes as efficient and selective catalysts for reductive amination reactions. In the presence of ammonia and hydrogen, cobalt–salen complexes such as cobalt(ii)–N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine produce ultra-small (2–4 nm) cobalt-nanoparticles embedded in a carbon–nitrogen framework. The resulting materials constitute stable, reusable and magnetically separable catalysts, which enable the synthesis of linear and branched benzylic, heterocyclic and aliphatic primary amines from carbonyl compounds and ammonia. The isolated nanoparticles also represent excellent catalysts for the synthesis of primary, secondary as well as tertiary amines including biologically relevant N-methyl amines. We report the synthesis of in situ generated cobalt nanoparticles from molecularly defined complexes as efficient and selective catalysts for reductive amination reactions.![]()

Abstract
Air-stable iron carbonyl compounds bearing cyclopentadienone ligands with varying substitution were explored as catalysts in dehydrogenative diol lactonization reactions using acetone as both the solvent and hydrogen acceptor. Two catalysts with trimethylsilyl groups in the 2- and 5-positions, [2,5-(SiMe3)2-3,4-(CH2)4(η4-C4C═O)]Fe(CO)3 (1) and [2,5-(SiMe3)2-3,4-(CH2)3(η4-C4C═O)]Fe(CO)3 (2), were found to be the most active, with 2 being the most selective in the lactonization of diols containing both primary and secondary alcohols. Lactones containing five-, six-, and seven-membered rings were successfully synthesized, and no over-oxidations to carboxylic acids were detected. The lactonization of unsymmetrical diols containing two primary alcohols occurred with catalyst 1, but selectivity was low based on alcohol electronics and modest based on alcohol sterics. Evidence for a transfer dehydrogenation mechanism was found, and insight into the origin of selectivity in the lactonization of 1°/2° diols was obtained. Additionally, spectroscopic evidence for a trimethylamine-ligated iron species formed in solution during the reaction was discovered.

Abstract
Abstract
β-amino acid esters are important scaffolds in medicinal chemistry and valuable building blocks for materials synthesis. Surprisingly, the waste-free construction of such moieties from readily available or renewable starting materials has not yet been addressed. Here we report on a robust and versatile method for obtaining β-amino acid esters by direct amination of β-hydroxyl acid esters via the borrowing hydrogen methodology using a cooperative catalytic system that comprises a homogeneous ruthenium catalyst and an appropriate Brønsted acid additive. This method allows for the direct amination of esters of 3-hydroxypropionic acid, a top value-added bio-based platform chemical, opening a simple route to access β-amino acid esters from a range of renewable polyols including sugars and glycerol.

Abstract
A one-pot iron-catalyzed conversion of allylic alcohols to α-methyl ketones has been developed. This isomerization-methylation strategy utilized a (cyclopentadienone)iron(0) carbonyl complex as precatalyst and methanol as the C1 source. A diverse range of allylic alcohols undergoes isomerization-methylation to form α-methyl ketones in good isolated yields (up to 84% isolated yield).

Abstract
Nucleophilic substitution reactions of alcohols are among the most fundamental and strategically important transformations in organic chemistry. For over half a century, these reactions have been achieved by using stoichiometric, and often hazardous, reagents to activate the otherwise unreactive alcohols. Here, we demonstrate that a specially designed phosphine oxide promotes nucleophilic substitution reactions of primary and secondary alcohols in a redox-neutral catalysis manifold that produces water as the sole by-product. The scope of the catalytic coupling process encompasses a range of acidic pronucleophiles that allow stereospecific construction of carbon-oxygen and carbon-nitrogen bonds.

Abstract
A modular and waste-free strategy for constructing N-substituted cyclic amines via decarboxylative N-alkylation of α-amino acids employing ruthenium- and iron-based catalysts is presented. The reported method allows the synthesis of a wide range of five- and six-membered N-alkylated heterocycles in moderate-to-excellent yields starting from predominantly proline and a broad range of benzyl alcohols, and primary and secondary aliphatic alcohols. Examples using pipecolic acid for the construction of piperidine derivatives, as well as the one-pot synthesis of α-amino nitriles, are also shown.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is malodorous and highly toxic, and its selective removal from industrial feedstock is highly recommended for safety and environment protection. We report here a class of nitrogen-functionalized, hierarchical porous polymers (N-HPPs) synthesized from one-step alkylation-induced cross-linking without any involvement of templates. The as-engineered N-HPPs are large in BET surface area (792-1397 m2/g) and endowed with hierarchical porosity. The incorporated nitrogen species of N-HPPs act as structural base sites with properties that can be precisely controlled. By molecular simulation, the enhanced interactions between N-HPPs and H2S were verified. The synthesized N-HPPs show superb capacities for H2S adsorption (9.2 mmol/g at 0 °C, 1.0 bar) and display satisfactory IAST H2S/N2 and H2S/CH4 selectivity (88.3 and 119.6, respectively, at 0 °C). Catalyzed by the structural base sites located in the N-HPPs, the COS together with its derived H2S can be effectively eliminated under mild conditions.

Abstract
We present an economical catalytic procedure to convert readily available 1,2-diaminobenzenes and terminal epoxides into valuable 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxalines in a highly enantioselective fashion. This procedure operates through relay zinc and iridium catalysis, and achieves redox-neutral and stereoconvergent production of valuable chiral heterocycles from racemic starting materials with water as the only side product. The use of commercially available reagents and catalysts and a convenient procedure also make this catalytic method attractive for practical application.

Abstract
Applications of Acceptorless Dehydrogenation (AD) process for the synthesis of important heterocycles are discussed. The key features of AD process are the generation of more reactive carbonyl/imine compounds from alcohols/amines by the release of dihydrogen as a stoichiometric byproduct. In this review, we document recent advances in this field by using first row transition metal catalysts and easily accessible coupling partners, thus offering cost-effective access to different heterocyclic rings.

Abstract
A new base metal catalyzed sustainable multicomponent synthesis of pyrroles from readily available substrates is reported. The developed protocol utilizes an air- and moisture-stable catalyst system and enables the replacement of themutagenic α-haloketones with readily abundant 1,2-diols. Moreover, the presented method is catalytic in base and the sole byproducts of this transformation are water and hydrogen gas. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction takes place through a combined acceptorless dehydrogenation hydrogen autotransfer methodology.

Abstract
An efficient method for the reductive amination of carbonyl derivatives with ω-amino fatty acids catalysed by an iron complex Fe(CO)4 (IMes) [IMes=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene] by means of hydrosilylation was developed. A variety of pyrrolidines, piperidines and azepanes were selectively synthesised in moderate-to-excellent yields (36 examples, 47-97 % isolated yield) with a good functional group tolerance.

ACS SUSTAINABLE CHEMISTRY & ENGINEERING 2019; 7:11267-11274. Abstract
Primary benzylamines are highly important building blocks in the pharmaceutical and polymer industry. An attractive catalytic approach to access these compounds is the direct coupling of benzyl alcohols with ammonia via the borrowing hydrogen methodology. However, this approach is usually hampered by a series of side-reactions, one of the most prominent being the overalkylation of the formed primary amine. Herein, we describe a robust catalytic methodology, which utilizes commercially available heterogeneous Ni catalysts and easy-to-handle ammonia sources, such as aqueous ammonia or ammonium salts, for the formation of primary benzylamines with good selectivity and scope. Notably, our method enables the conversion of potentially lignin-derived vanillyl alcohol to vanillylamine, which can be used to produce emerging biobased polymers or as pharma building blocks. Important sugar derived platform alcohols as well as long chain aliphatic primary alcohols can be successfully aminated. Moreover, we provide an alternative, sustainable route to p-xylylenediamine and m-xylylenediamine, important components of heat resistant polyamides such as Kevlar.

Abstract
A general and efficient iron-catalyzed C-alkylation of oxindoles has been developed. This borrowing hydrogen approach employing a (cyclopentadienone)iron carbonyl complex (2 mol %) exhibited a broad reaction scope, allowing benzylic and simple primary and secondary aliphatic alcohols to be employed as alkylating agents. A variety of oxindoles underwent selective mono-C3-alkylation in good-to-excellent isolated yields (28 examples, 50-92 % yield, 79 % average yield).
