Abstract
A nanosensor, based on 8-hydroxyquinoline functionalized graphene oxide, was developed for the fluorescence detection of Zn2+. It showed high selectivity and sensitivity for Zn2+ion in aqueous solution over other metal ions such as Li+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Cd2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Fe2+, Fe3+and Cr3+. Due to the linearity of the emission intensity toward Zn2+ concentration, fluorescent technique could be used for the detection of Zn2+ ion even at very low concentrations.

Abstract
A rhodamine-based smart probe (RHES) has been developed for trace-level detection and discrimination of multiple cations, viz. Al3+, Zn2+, Cd2+, and Hg2+ in a ratiometric manner involving photo-induced electron transfer-chelation-enhanced fluorescence-fluorescence resonance energy transfer processes. The method being very fast and highly selective allows their bare eye visualization at a physiological pH. The optimized geometry and spectral properties of RHES and its cation adducts have been analyzed by time-dependent density functional theory calculations. RHES detects as low as 1.5 × 10-9 M Al3+, 1.2 × 10-9 M Zn2+, 6.7 × 10-9 M Cd2+, and 1.7 × 10-10 M Hg2+, whereas the respective association constants are 1.33 × 105 M-1, 2.11 × 104 M-1, 1.35 × 105 M-1, and 4.09 × 105 M-1. The other common ions do not interfere. The probe is useful for intracellular imaging of Zn2+, Cd2+, and Hg2+ in squamous epithelial cells. RHES is useful for the determination of the ions in sea fish and real samples.

Abstract
2-((9H-fluoren-2-ylimino) methyl)phenol (F3) was synthesized by condensation reaction of 9H-fluoren-2-amine and 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde in EtOH and characterized by its melting point, 1H-,13C NMR and molecular mass. F3 exhibits a high selectivity for detection of Cr3+ and Al3+ ions as a fluorescent chemosensor and showed a single emission band at 536nm upon excitation at 333nm according to fluorescence emission studies. The addition of Cr3+ and Al3+ make a significant increase in fluorescent intensity at 536nm in CH3CN, while other metal ions have almost no influence on the fluorescence. The fluorescence enhancement was attributed to the inhibited CN isomerization and the obstructed excited state intra-molecular proton transfer (ESIPT) of compound F3. Job's plot and DFT calculations data showed that the binding stoichiometries of F3 with Cr3+ and Al3+ are 2:1. The association constants (Ka) for Cr3+ and Al3+ were calculated and found to be 8.33×104M-1 and 5.44×104M-1, respectively. The detection limits were also calculated for Cr3+ and Al3+ and found to be 2.5×10-7mol/L and 3.1×10-7mol/L, respectively.

Abstract
The detection of Ag+ in the environment is very important to determine the level of pollution from silver complexes, which have caused various human health problems. Herein, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) chromophore (tetraphenylethane, TPE) attached to a benzimidazole group (tetra-benzimidazole, TBI–TPE) is synthesized and utilized to detect Ag+ in the environment. The strong chelating effect between the benzimidazole group and Ag+ leads to the formation of aggregates, and strong yellow fluorescence signals were observed after adding Ag+ into a TBI–TPE solution. The stoichiometry of the complex of TBI–TPE and Ag+ was established to be 1 : 2 using photochemical and mass spectra measurements. The detection limit of the Ag+ assay is 90 nM with a linear range from 100 nM to 6 μM. This study provides a facile method to determine Ag+ in real environmental samples with satisfactory results. We develop a highly selective TPE-based AIE fluorescent probe containing a benzimidazole group for the detection of Ag+.![]()

Abstract
A zinc sensor based on quinoline and morpholine has been synthesized. The sensor selectively fluoresces in the presence of Zn2+, while not for other metal ions. Absorbance changes in the 350nm region are observed when Zn2+ binds, which binds in a 1:1 ratio. The sensor fluoresces due to Zn2+ above pH values of 6.0 and in the biological important region. The Zn2+-sensor complex has the unique ability to detect both Hg2+ and HS-. The fluorescence of the Zn2+-sensor complex is quenched when it is exposed to aqueous solutions of Hg2+ with sub-micromolar detection levels for Hg2+. The fluorescence of the Zn2+-sensor complex is also quenched by aqueous solutions of hydrosulfide. The sensor was used to detect Zn2+ and Hg2+ in living cells.

Abstract
Three naphthol Schiff base-type fluorescent sensors, 1,3-Bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylideneamino)propane (L1), 1,3-Bis(1-naphthylideneamino)-2-hydroxypropane (L2) and 1,3-Bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylideneamino)-2-hydroxypropane (L3), have been synthesized. Their recognition abilities for Al(3+) are studied by fluorescence spectra. Coordination with Al(3+) inhibited the CN isomerization of Schiff base which intensely increase the fluorescence of L1-L3. Possessing a suitable space coordination structure, L3 is a best selective probe for Al(3+) over other metal ions in MeOH-HEPES buffer (3/7, V/V, pH=6.6, 25°C, λem=435nm). A turn-on ratio over 140-fold is triggered with the addition of 1.0 equiv. Al(3+) to L3. The binding constant Ka of L3-Al(3+) is found to be 1.01×10(6.5)M(-1) in a 1:1 complex mode. The detection limit for Al(3+) is 0.05μM. Theoretical calculations have also been included in support of the configuration of the L3-Al(3+) complex. Importantly, the probe L3 has been successfully used for fluorescence imaging in colon cancer SW480 cells.

Abstract
A water-soluble triazole-linked quinoline conjugate of glucopyranose (L) has been synthesized and characterized, and its single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) structure has been established. Binding of L toward different biologically relevant metal ions has been studied using fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy in HEPES buffer at pH 7.4. The conjugate L detects Zn2+ and Cd2+ with 30 ± 2 and 14 ± 1-fold fluorescence enhancement, respectively, but in the case of Hg2+, only a fluorescence quench was observed. The stoichiometry of the complex is 1:2 metal ion to the ligand in the case of Zn2+ and Cd2+ resulting in [Zn(L)2] and [Cd(L)2], and it is 1:1 in the case of Hg2+, as confirmed from their electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESIMS) spectra. Zn2+ shows greater exothermicity over Cd2+, whereas Hg2+ shows endothermicity , which supports the differences in their binding strength and the nature of the corresponding complex. L exhibits rod-shaped particles and upon complexation with Zn2+, it exhibits sphere-like morphological features in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. However, clustered aggregates are observed in Cd2+, whereas the [HgL] complex exhibits small fused spherical structures, and therefore the signature of these ions is seen in microscopy images. The computational studies revealed that the syn-[Zn(L)2] complex is stabilized by 9.7 kcal mol-1 more than that in the case of anti-[Zn(L)2] owing to the formation of hydrogen bonds between the two glucosyl moieties within the syn-complex. Among the anions studied, [Zn(L)2] is sensitive and selective toward the phosphate ion (H2PO4 -) with a minimum detection limit of 16 ± 2 ppb. Similarly, the [HgL] can act as a secondary sensor for CN- while also exhibiting reversibility. Based on the input-output characteristics, INHIBIT logic gate was built in the case of Zn2+ vs H2PO4 - and IMPLICATION logic gate was built in the case of Hg2+ vs CN-.

Abstract
A new series of symmetric, bis-cholesteryl-appended, isosorbide derivatives (BCIE, BCIC2 and BCIC4) were designed as gelators to respond to changes in their environment and were synthesized successfully. Among these derivatives, BCIE can gel a wide variety of organic solvents (23 solvents), suggesting that BCIE acts as a more versatile gelator than BCIC2 and BCIC4. The CGC of the gels varies from 1.53 mM in 1-hexanol to 23 mM in pyridine. The results of the gelation ability in different solvents revealed that changing the linking group (ester/carbamate) attached to the cholesteryl units can produce a dramatic change in the gelation behavior of the compounds. The morphology of the as-formed organogels can be regulated by changing the types of organic solvents. The results from electron microscopy studies revealed that the gelator molecule self-assembled into different aggregates, from wrinkled fibers to dense fibers, with the change of solvents. The gels of BCIE in 1-hexanol and 1-octanol exhibited strong CD (circular dichroism) signals, indicating that the gelation induced supramolecular chirality in these gel systems. Secondary forces of van der Waals and π-π stacking (from both 1,2,3-triazole and aromatic units) played important roles in the aggregation of compounds in the solvents according to FTIR and variable temperature (1)H-NMR analysis, and a mechanism for the gel formation was proposed. The gel-to-sol phase transition can be triggered by the addition of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), and the gel state was obtained slowly (after 1 day) when neutralizing with triethyl amine (TEA), which indicated that the sol ⇄ gel phase transitions are tunable by pH, which is further supported by (1)H-NMR and SEM analysis. In addition, the gel stability of BCIE was investigated using Cu(2+), Cd(2+), Ag(2+), Fe(3+), Hg(2+), Mg(2+), Pd(2+), Al(3+) and Zn(2+), and the results showed that the gel-to-sol phase transition process could be selectively controlled by interaction with Pd(2+) and Zn(2+) because complexation with 1,2,3-triazoles destroyed the interactions between the triazoles, collapsing the gel, which was further evidenced by (1)H-NMR and SEM analysis. However, the gel stability of BCIE was enhanced by the addition of Pd(2+) and Zn(2+) in the presence of pyridine, whereas the gel collapsed in other solvents, which may be due to the chelating effect of the pyridine moiety. Another interesting feature of this gel is that when using the gelator as a stabilizer, stable water in oil (W/O) gel-emulsions were created, in which styrene can be used as the continuous phase and water as the dispersed phase with the stabilizer in the continuous phase of only 2% (w/v). Gel-emulsions were observed with any ratio of water to styrene.
