Electrospinning and Electrospun Nanofibers: Methods, Materials, and Applications

Electrospinning is a versatile and viable technique for generating ultrathin fibers. Remarkable progress has been made with regard to the development of electrospinning methods and engineering of electrospun nanofibers to suit or enable various applications. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of electrospinning, including the principle, methods, materials, and applications. We begin with a brief introduction to the early history of electrospinning, followed by discussion of its principle and typical apparatus. We then discuss its renaissance over the past two decades as a powerful technology for the production of nanofibers with diversified compositions, structures, and properties. Afterward, we discuss the applications of electrospun nanofibers, including their use as "smart" mats, filtration membranes, catalytic supports, energy harvesting/conversion/storage components, and photonic and electronic devices, as well as biomedical scaffolds. We highlight the most relevant and recent advances related to the applications of electrospun nanofibers by focusing on the most representative examples. We also offer perspectives on the challenges, opportunities, and new directions for future development. At the end, we discuss approaches to the scale-up production of electrospun nanofibers and briefly discuss various types of commercial products based on electrospun nanofibers that have found widespread use in our everyday life.

Recent Advances and Perspectives of Carbon-Based Nanostructures as Anode Materials for Li-ion Batteries

Rechargeable batteries are attractive power storage equipment for a broad diversity of applications. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are widely used the superior rechargeable battery in portable electronics. The increasing needs in portable electronic devices require improved Li-ion batteries with excellent results over many discharge-recharge cycles. One important approach to ensure the electrodes' integrity is by increasing the storage capacity of cathode and anode materials. This could be achieved using nanoscale-sized electrode materials. In the article, we review the recent advances and perspectives of carbon nanomaterials as anode material for Lithium-ion battery applications. The first section of the review presents the general introduction, industrial use, and working principles of Li-ion batteries. It also demonstrates the advantages and disadvantages of nanomaterials and challenges to utilize nanomaterials for Li-ion battery applications. The second section of the review describes the utilization of various carbon-based nanomaterials as anode materials for Li-ion battery applications. The last section presents the conclusion and future directions.

3D Heteroatom-Doped Carbon Nanomaterials as Multifunctional Metal-Free Catalysts for Integrated Energy Devices

Sustainable and cost-effective energy generation has become crucial for fulfilling present energy requirements. For this purpose, the development of cheap, scalable, efficient, and reliable catalysts is essential. Carbon-based heteroatom-doped, 3D, and mesoporous electrodes are very promising as catalysts for electrochemical energy conversion and storage. Various carbon allotropes doped with a variety of heteroatoms can be utilized for cost-effective mass production of electrode materials. 3D porous carbon electrodes provide multiple advantages, such as large surface area, maximized exposure to active sites, 3D conductive pathways for efficient electron transport, and porous channels to facilitate electrolyte diffusion. However, it is challenging to synthesize and functionalize isotropic 3D carbon structures. Here, various synthesis processes of 3D porous carbon materials are summarized to understand how their physical and chemical properties together with heteroatom doping dictate the electrochemical catalytic performance. Prospects of attractive 3D carbon structural materials for energy conversion and efficient integrated energy systems are also discussed.

Investigation of two-dimensional hf-based MXenes as the anode materials for li/na-ion batteries: A DFT study

Density functional theory calculations are performed to investigate electronic properties and Li/Na storage capability of Hf₃ C₂ and its derivatives (uniform passivated: Hf₃ C₂ T₂ [T = F, O, OH] and hybrid passivated: Hf₃ C₂ F_x O_2-x and Hf₃ C₂ O_x (OH)_2-x [x = 1.0, 1.5]). For Hf₃ C₂ monolayer, it has excellent performance, such as good conductivity, low diffusion energy barrier, low open circuit voltage, and high storage capacities (Li(1034.70 mAh g^-1 ), Na(444.90 mAh g^-1 )), providing the most prospective as anode material. However, due to the unsaturated dangling bonds of surface Hf, so it is easily passivated. For the uniform passivated ones, Hf₃ C₂ T₂ , show higher diffusion barriers and lower storage capacities than bare monolayer Hf₃ C₂ . Nevertheless, compared with uniform passivated ones, the hybrid passivated derivative, Hf₃ C₂ F_1.5 O_0.5 and Hf₃ C₂ OOH possess a lower energy barrier and a better storage capacity. Therefore, Hf₃ C₂ F_1.5 O_0.5 and Hf₃ C₂ OOH are deemed to be a suitable candidate as anode electrode material for Li-ion batteries. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Removing Metal Ions from Water with Graphene⁻Bovine Serum Albumin Hybrid Membrane

Here we report the fabrication of graphene oxide (GO)-based membranes covalently combined with bovine serum albumin (BSA) for metal ions detection. In this system, BSA acts as a transporter protein in the membrane and endows the membrane with selective recognition of Co2+, Cu2+, AuCl₄-, and Fe2+. Combining the metal-binding ability of BSA and the large surface area of GO, the hybrid membrane can be used as a water purification strategy to selectively absorb a large amount of AuCl₄- from HAuCl₄ solution. Moreover, BSA could reduce the membrane-immobilized AuCl₄- by adding sodium borohydride (NaBH₄). Interestingly, adsorption experiments on three kinds of metal ions showed that the GO⁻BSA membrane had good selective adsorption of Co2+ compared with Cu2+ and Fe2+. The morphology and composition changes of the membrane were observed with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. It is expected that this facile strategy for fabricating large-scale graphene-biomolecule membranes will spark inspirations in the development of functional nanomaterials and wastewater purification.

Enhanced Roles of Carbon Architectures in High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which are high-energy-density and low-safety-risk secondary batteries, are underpinned to the rise in electrochemical energy storage devices that satisfy the urgent demands of the global energy storage market. With the aim of achieving high energy density and fast-charging performance, the exploitation of simple and low-cost approaches for the production of high capacity, high density, high mass loading, and kinetically ion-accessible electrodes that maximize charge storage and transport in LIBs, is a critical need. Toward the construction of high-performance electrodes, carbons are promisingly used in the enhanced roles of active materials, electrochemical reaction frameworks for high-capacity noncarbons, and lightweight current collectors. Here, we review recent advances in the carbon engineering of electrodes for excellent electrochemical performance and structural stability, which is enabled by assembled carbon architectures that guarantee sufficient charge delivery and volume fluctuation buffering inside the electrode during cycling. Some specific feasible assembly methods, synergism between structural design components of carbon assemblies, and electrochemical performance enhancement are highlighted. The precise design of carbon cages by the assembly of graphene units is potentially useful for the controlled preparation of high-capacity carbon-caged noncarbon anodes with volumetric capacities over 2100 mAh cm^-3. Finally, insights are given on the prospects and challenges for designing carbon architectures for practical LIBs that simultaneously provide high energy densities (both gravimetric and volumetric) and high rate performance.

Graphene-based advanced nanoplatforms and biocomposites from environmentally friendly and biomimetic approaches

Environmentally friendly and biomimetic approaches to fabricate graphene-based advanced nanoplatforms and biocomposites for biomedical applications are summarized in this review.

Recent Advances in 3D Graphene Architectures and Their Composites for Energy Storage Applications

Graphene is widely applied as an electrode material in energy storage fields. However, the strong π-π interaction between graphene layers and the stacking issues lead to a great loss of electrochemically active surface area, damaging the performance of graphene electrodes. Developing 3D graphene architectures that are constructed of graphene sheet subunits is an effective strategy to solve this problem. The graphene architectures can be directly utilized as binder-free electrodes for energy storage devices. Furthermore, they can be used as a matrix to support active materials and further improve their electrochemical performance. Here, recent advances in synthesizing 3D graphene architectures and their composites as well as their application in different energy storage devices, including various battery systems and supercapacitors are reviewed. In addition, their challenges for application at the current stage are discussed and future development prospects are indicated.

Zn-Ion Hybrid Micro-Supercapacitors with Ultrahigh Areal Energy Density and Long-Term Durability

On-chip micro-supercapacitors (MSCs), as promising power candidates for microdevices, typically exhibit high power density, large charge/discharge rates, and long cycling lifetimes. However, as for most reported MSCs, the unsatisfactory areal energy density (<10 µWh cm^-2 ) still hinders their practical applications. Herein, a new-type Zn-ion hybrid MSC with ultrahigh areal energy density and long-term durability is demonstrated. Benefiting from fast ion adsorption/desorption on the capacitor-type activated-carbon cathode and reversible Zn stripping/plating on the battery-type electrodeposited Zn-nanosheet anode, the fabricated Zn-ion hybrid MSCs exhibit remarkable areal capacitance of 1297 mF cm^-2 at 0.16 mA cm^-2 (259.4 F g^-1 at a current density of 0.05 A g^-1 ), landmark areal energy density (115.4 µWh cm^-2 at 0.16 mW cm^-2 ), and a superb cycling stability without noticeable decay after 10 000 cycles. This work will inspire the fabrication and development of new high-performance microenergy devices based on novel device design.

Liquid-Phase Exfoliation of Graphene: An Overview on Exfoliation Media, Techniques, and Challenges

Graphene, a two-dimensional (2D) carbon nanomaterial, has attracted worldwide attention owing to its fascinating properties. One of critical bottlenecks on some important classes of applications, such as printed electronics, conductive coatings, and composite fillers, is the lack of industrial-scale methods to produce high-quality graphene in the form of liquid suspensions, inks, or dispersions. Since 2008, when liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) of graphene via sonication was initiated, huge progress has been made in the past decade. This review highlights the latest progress on the successful preparation of graphene in various media, including organic solvents, ionic liquids, water/polymer or surfactant solutions, and some other green dispersants. The techniques of LPE, namely sonication, high-shear mixing, and microfluidization are reviewed subsequently. Moreover, several typical devices of high-shear mixing and exfoliation mechanisms are introduced in detail. Finally, we give perspectives on future research directions for the development of green exfoliation media and efficient techniques for producing high-quality graphene. This systematic exploratory study of LPE will potentially pave the way for the scalable production of graphene, which can be also applied to produce other 2D layered materials, such as BN, MoS₂, WS₂, etc.

Large-scale synthesis of free-standing N-doped graphene using microwave plasma

Direct assembling of N-graphene, i.e. nitrogen doped graphene, in a controllable manner was achieved using microwave plasmas at atmospheric pressure conditions. The synthesis is accomplished via a single step using ethanol and ammonia as carbon and nitrogen precursors. Tailoring of the high-energy density plasma environment results in a selective synthesis of N-graphene (~0.4% doping level) in a narrow range of externally controlled operational conditions, i.e. precursor and background gas fluxes, plasma reactor design and microwave power. Applying infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to the flow of free-standing sheets in the post-plasma zone carries out changes in the percentage of sp², the N doping type and the oxygen functionalities. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the relative extension of the graphene sheets π-system and the type of nitrogen chemical functions present in the lattice structure. Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy were applied to determine morphological and structural characteristics of the sheets. Optical emission and FT-IR spectroscopy were applied for characterization of the high-energy density plasma environment and outlet gas stream. Electrochemical measurements were also performed to elucidate the electrochemical behavior of NG for supercapacitor applications.

Sulfanilic Acid Pending on a Graphene Scaffold: Novel, Efficient Synthesis and Much Enhanced Polymer Solar Cell Efficiency and Stability Using It as a Hole Extraction Layer

In this contribution, we describe a novel, facile, and scalable methodology for high degree functionalization toward graphene by the reaction between bulk graphite fluoride and in situ generated amine anion. Using this, the rationally designed sulfanilic acid pending on a graphene scaffold (G-SO₃H), a two-dimensional (2D) π-conjugated counterpart of poly(styrenesulfonate), is available. Combined reliable characterizations demonstrate that a very large quantity of sulfanilic blocks are linked to graphene through the foreseen substitution of carbon-fluorine units and an unexpected reductive defluorination simultaneously proceeds during the one-step reaction, endowing the resultant G-SO₃H with splendid dispersity in various solvents and film-forming property via the former, and with recovered 2D π-conjugation via the latter. Besides, the work function of G-SO₃H lies at -4.8 eV, well matched with the P3HT donor. Awarded with these fantastic merits, G-SO₃H behaves capable in hole collection and transport, indicated by the enhanced device efficiency and stability of polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on intensively studied P3HT:PCBM blends as an active layer. In particular, comparison with conventional poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrenesulfonate) and recently rising and shining graphene oxide, G-SO₃H outperforms above 17 and 24%, respectively, in efficiency. More impressively, when these three unencapsulated devices are placed in a N₂-filled glovebox at around 25 °C for 7 weeks, or subject to thermal treatment at 150 °C for 6 h also in N₂ atmosphere, or even rudely exposed to indoor air, G-SO₃H-based PSCs exhibit the best stability. These findings enable G-SO₃H to be a strongly competitive alternative of the existing hole extraction materials for PSC real-life applications.

Printable Nanomaterials for the Fabrication of High-Performance Supercapacitors

In recent years, supercapacitors are attracting great attention as one kind of electrochemical energy storage device, which have a high power density, a high energy density, fast charging and discharging, and a long cycle life. As a solution processing method, printing technology is widely used to fabricate supercapacitors. Printable nanomaterials are critical to the fabrication of high-performance supercapacitors by printing technology. In this work, the advantages of printing technology are summarized. Moreover, various nanomaterials used to fabricate supercapacitors by printing technology are presented. Finally, the remaining challenges and broad research as well as application prospects in printing high-performance supercapacitors with nanomaterials are proposed.

Rational design of MnCo2O4@NC@MnO2 three-layered core–shell octahedron for high-rate and long-life lithium storage
