Improving MOF stability: approaches and applications

Exploring the potential of iron-based metal-organic frameworks as peroxidase nanozymes for glucose detection with various secondary building units

Finding materials in biosensing that balance enzyme-like reactivity, stability, and affordability is essential for the future. Because of their unique peroxidase properties, including variable pore size, surface area, and Lewis acid active sites, iron-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have evolved as viable possibilities. In this study, we constructed a Fe-MOF and tested its peroxidase-like activity and responsiveness toward H2O2 colorimetric techniques. Using encapsulation, we incorporated glucose oxidase into the ZIF-90 PVP MOF and conducted a sequential reaction with the Fe-MOF to detect glucose. The results showed better peroxidase catalytic activity of the MIL-88B(Fe) (1,4-NDC) MOF and similar secondary building unit (SBU) Fe-MOFs were studied in other peroxidase nanozyme studies. When combined with an enzyme-encapsulating ZIF-90 PVP MOF, they could be sequentially employed for glucose detection purposes. This study highlights the potential of nanozymes as an alternative to natural enzymes, with promising applications in biosensing and beyond.

Multi-Modular Design of Stable Pore-Space-Partitioned Metal-Organic Frameworks for Gas Separation Applications

Pore space partition (PSP) is an effective materials design method for developing high-performance small-pore materials for storage and separation of gas molecules. The continued success of PSP depends on broad availability and judicious choice of pore-partition ligands and better understanding of each structural module on stability and sorption properties. Here, by using substructural bioisosteric strategy (sub-BIS), a dramatic expansion of pore-partitioned materials is targeted by using ditopic dipyridyl ligands with non-aromatic cores or extenders, as well as by expanding heterometallic clusters to uncommon nickel-vanadium and nickel-indium clusters rarely known before in porous materials. The dual-module iterative refinement of pore-partition ligands and trimers leads to remarkable enhancement of chemical stability and porosity. Here a family of 23 pore-partitioned materials synthesized from five pore-partition ligands and seven types of trimeric clusters is reported. New materials with such compositionally and structurally diverse framework modules reveal key factors that dictate stability, porosity, and gas separation properties. Among these, materials based on heterometallic vanadium-nickel trimeric clusters give rise to the highest long-term hydrolytic stability and remarkable uptake capacity for CO2 , C2 H2 /C2 H4 /C2 H6 , and C3 H6 /C3 H8 hydrocarbon gases. The breakthrough experiment shows the potential application of new materials for separating gas mixtures such as C2 H2 /CO2 .

Progress on Single-Atom Photocatalysts for H2 Generation: Material Design, Catalytic Mechanism, and Perspectives

Solar energy utilization is of great significance to current challenges of the energy crisis and environmental pollution, which benefit the development of the global community to achieve carbon neutrality goals. Hydrogen energy is also treated as a good candidate for future energy supply since its combustion not only supplies high-density energy but also shows no pollution gas. In particular, photocatalytic water splitting has attracted increasing research as a promising method for H2 production. Recently, single-atom (SA) photocatalysts have been proposed as a potential solution to improve catalytic efficiency and lower the costs of photocatalytic water splitting for H2 generation. Owing to the maximized atom utilization rate, abundant surface active sites, and tunable coordination environment, SA photocatalysts have achieved significant progress. This review reviews developments of advanced SA photocatalysts for H2 generation regarding the different support materials. The recent progress of titanium dioxide, metal-organic frameworks, two-dimensional carbon materials, and red phosphorus supported SA photocatalysts are carefully discussed. In particular, the material designs, reaction mechanisms, modulation strategies, and perspectives are highlighted for realizing improved solar-to-energy efficiency and H2 generation rate. This work will supply significant references for future design and synthesis of advanced SA photocatalysts.

A Water-Stable Cationic SIFSIX MOF for Luminescent Probing of Cr2 O7 2- via Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Transformation

The sensing and monitoring of toxic oxo-anion contaminants in water are of significant importance to biological and environmental systems. A rare hydro-stable SIFSIX metal-organic framework, SiF6 @MOF-1, {[Cu(L)2 (H2 O)2 ]·(SiF6 )(H2 O)}n , with exchangeable SiF6 2- anion in its pore is strategically designed and synthesized, exhibiting selective detection of toxic Cr2 O7 2- oxo-anion in an aqueous medium having high sensitivity, selectivity, and recyclability through fluorescence quenching phenomena. More importantly, the recognition and ion exchange mechanism is unveiled through the rarely explored single-crystal-to-single crystal (SC-SC) fashion with well-resolved structures. A thorough SC-SC study with interfering anions (Cl- , F- , I- , NO3 - , HCO3 - , SO4 2- , SCN- , IO3 - ) revealed no such transformations to take place, as per line with quenching studies. Density functional theory calculations revealed that despite a lesser binding affinity, Cr2 O7 2- shows strong orbital mixing and large driving forces for electron transfer than SiF6 2- , and thus enlightens the fluorescence quenching mechanism. This work inaugurates the usage of a SIFSIX MOF toward sensing application domain under aqueous medium where hydrolytic stability is a prime concern for their plausible implementation as sensor materials.

Three in One: Superoleophilic, Chemically and Mechanically Resistant ZIF-7 and ZIF-11 Percolation Networks for Selective Permeation of Oils and Chlorinated Solvents

Imbuing superwetting functions to organic-inorganic hybrid networks displaying chemical resistance, self-cleaning ability, and selective permeation of liquids has received increasing attention in recent years. Here we report superhydrophobic ZIF-7 and ZIF-11 on multilayer fluorinated graphene (FG) nanosheets with long-lasting water-repellent features. By exploring the solution processing of these chemically resistant dispersions, superoleophilic FG-ZIF-7 stainless steel mesh (FG-ZIF-7-SSM) and FG-ZIF-11 over cotton cloth (FG-ZIF-11-CC) possessing superior adhesion were fabricated. These permselective oil-liking prototypes were explored toward mesitylene and crude oil pickup from chemically harsh marine conditions such as seawater, acidic water, and alkaline water, with a separation efficiency of 96-94% up to 10 cycles. Furthermore, using an FG-ZIF-11-CC-wrapped glass pipet, upward diffusion of chloroform from sea, acidic, and alkaline water in 45 s was demonstrated with a separation efficacy of 94% up to 20 cycles. In addition to the chemical resistance and reusability, the mechanical stability of FG-ZIF-7-SSM and FG-ZIF-11-CC was investigated through folding, tape peeling, and dragging through sandpaper up to 250 cycles, showing no signs of changes in the hydrophobic responses. This research sheds light on the application of physiochemically resistant percolation coatings based on fluorinated graphene multilayers supporting ZIF-7 and ZIF-11 toward oil/water separation.

Integration of Triphenylene-Based Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks into Carbon Nanotube Electrodes for Boosting Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensing

The rational design and preparation of conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are alluring and challenging pathways to develop active catalysts toward electrocatalytic glucose oxidation. The hybridization of conductive MOFs with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the form of a composite can greatly improve the electrocatalytic performance. Herein, a facile one-step synthetic strategy is utilized to fabricate a Ni3(HHTP)2/CNT (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) composite for nonenzymatic detection of glucose in an alkaline solution. The Ni3(HHTP)2/CNT composite, as an electrochemical glucose sensor material, exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation with a wide detection range of up to 3.9 mM, a low detection limit of 4.1 μM (signal/noise = 3), a fast amperometric response time of <2 s, and a high sensitivity of 4774 μA mM-1 cm-2, surpassing the performance of some recently reported nonenzymatic transition-metal-based glucose sensors. In addition, the composite sensor also shows outstanding selectivity, robust long-term electrochemical stability, favorable anti-interference properties, and good reproducibility. This work displays the effectiveness of enhancing the electrocatalytic performance toward glucose detection by combing conductive MOFs with CNTs, thereby opening up an applicable and encouraging approach for the design of advanced nonenzymatic glucose sensors.

Ligand-Mediated Regulation of the Chemical/Thermal Stability and Catalytic Performance of Isostructural Cobalt(II) Coordination Polymers

Regulating the chemical/thermal stability and catalytic activity of coordination polymers (CPs) to achieve high catalytic performance is topical and challenging. The CPs are competent in promoting oxidative cross-coupling, yet they have not received substantial attention. Here, the ligand effect of the secondary ligand of CPs for oxidative cross-coupling reactions was investigated. Specifically, four new isostructural CPs [Co(Fbtx)1.5(4-R-1,2-BDC)]n (denoted as Co-CP-R, Fbtx = 1,4-bis(1,2,4-triazole-1-ylmethyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene, 4-R-1,2-BDC = 4-R-1,2-benzenedicarboxylate, R = F, Cl, Br, CF3) were prepared. It was found that in the reactions of oxidative amination of benzoxazoles with secondary amines and the oxidative coupling of styrenes with benzaldehydes, both the chemical and thermal stabilities of the four Co-CPs with the R group followed the trend of -CF3 > -Br > -Cl > -F. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the difference in reactivity may be ascribed to the effect of substituent groups on the electron transition energy of the cobalt(II) center of these Co-CPs. These findings highlight the secondary ligand effect in regulating the stability and catalytic performance of coordination networks.

Co-containing metal-organic framework for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors with functionalized reduced graphene oxide

Nowadays, supercapacitors are the most coveted eco-friendly and sustainable next-generation energy storage devices. In this regard, developing supercapacitors with high energy density and power density has always been a challenge for researchers. Herein, we have exploited an electroactive Co-containing metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) using cheap and commercially available starting materials under refluxing conditions and explored its energy storage properties in three- and two-electrode methods. The Co-MOF exhibited a specific capacitance of 425 F g-1 at 2 A g-1, maintaining a capacitance of ∼78% over 2200 successive charge-discharge cycles in a three-electrode system. The two-electrode asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) using Co-MOF as the working electrode and as-synthesized p-phenylenediamine (PPD)-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (PPD-rGO) as the counter electrode divulged a specific capacitance of 72.5 F g-1 at 2 A g-1 current density with ∼70% capacitive retention after 2200 successive charge-discharge cycles over a broad potential window of 0-1.6 V. Moreover, the ASC demonstrated a maximum power density of 11.9 kW kg-1 at 10 A g-1 and a maximum energy density of 25.8 W h kg-1 at 2 A g-1 current density. Owing to the stable electrochemical redox (Co2+/Co3+)-mediated pseudocapacitive behavior of the Co-MOF and the high surface area and electrical conductivity of in situ generated PPD-intercalated rGO, the fabricated ASC unveiled high-performance supercapacitive behaviors. To investigate the practical applicability of this material, solid-state (ASC) devices were fabricated by employing the Co-MOF as the positive electrode and PPD-rGO as the negative electrode in a KOH-based gel electrolyte, which could power a commercially available light-emitting diode bulb (∼1.8 V) for several seconds. Therefore, the elucidated high electrochemical energy storage performance of the prepared Co-MOF makes it a very promising electrode material for supercapacitors.

Cellulose-based adsorbents for solid phase extraction and recovery of pharmaceutical residues from water

Cellulose has attracted interest from researchers both in academic and industrial sectors due to its unique structural and physicochemical properties. The ease of surface modification of cellulose by the integration of nanomaterials, magnetic components, metal organic frameworks and polymers has made them a promising adsorbent for solid phase extraction of emerging contaminants, including pharmaceutical residues. This review summarizes, compares, and contrasts different types of cellulose-based adsorbents along with their applications in adsorption, extraction and pre-concentration of pharmaceutical residues in water for subsequent analysis. In addition, a comparison in efficiency of cellulose-based adsorbents and other types of adsorbents that have been used for the extraction of pharmaceuticals in water is presented. From our observation, cellulose-based materials have principally been investigated for the adsorption of pharmaceuticals in water. However, this review aims to shift the focus of researchers to the application of these adsorbents in the effective pre-concentration of pharmaceutical pollutants from water at trace concentrations, for quantification. At the end of the review, the challenges and future perspectives regarding cellulose-based adsorbents are discussed, thus providing an in-depth overview of the current state of the art in cellulose hybrid adsorbents for extraction of pharmaceuticals from water. This is expected to inspire the development of solid phase exraction materials that are efficient, relatively cheap, and prepared in a sustainable way.

Experimental and Theoretical Evaluation of the Thermodynamics of the Carbonation Reaction of ZIF-8 and Its Close-Packed Polymorph with Carbon Dioxide

We report the first experimental and theoretical evaluation of the thermodynamic driving force for the reaction of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with carbon dioxide, leading to a metal-organic carbonate phase. Carbonation upon exposure of MOFs to CO2 is a significant concern for the design and deployment of such materials in carbon storage technologies, and this work shows that the formation of a carbonate material from the popular SOD-topology framework material ZIF-8, as well as its dense-packed dia-topology polymorph, is significantly exothermic. With knowledge of the crystal structure of the starting and final phases in the carbonation reaction, we have also identified periodic density functional theory approaches that most closely reproduce the measured reaction enthalpies. This development now permits the use of advanced theoretical calculations to calculate the driving forces behind the carbonation of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks with reasonable accuracy.

Creating Order in Ultrastable Phosphonate Metal-Organic Frameworks via Isolable Hydrogen-Bonded Intermediates

The stability presented by trivalent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) makes them an attractive class of materials. With phosphonate-based ligands, crystallization is a challenge, as there are significantly more binding motifs that can be adopted due to the extra oxygen tether compared to carboxylate counterparts and the self-assembly processes are less reversible. Despite this, we have reported charge-assisted hydrogen-bonded metal-organic frameworks (HMOFs) consisting of [Cr(H2O)6]3+ and phosphonate ligands, which were crystallographically characterized. We sought to use these HMOFs as a crystalline intermediate to synthesize ordered Cr(III)-phosphonate MOFs. This can be done by dehydrating the HMOF to remove the aquo ligands around the Cr(III) center, forcing metal-phosphonate coordination. Herein, a new porous HMOF, H-CALF-50, is synthesized and then dehydrated to yield the MOF CALF-50. CALF-50 is ordered, although it is not single crystalline. It does, however, have exceptional stability, maintaining crystallinity and surface area after boiling in water for 3 weeks and soaking in 14.5 M H3PO4 for 24 h and 9 M HCl for 72 h. Computational methods are used to study the HMOF to MOF transformation and give insight into the nature of the structure and the degree of heterogeneity.

MOF-Based Chemiresistive Gas Sensors: Toward New Functionalities

The sensing performances of gas sensors must be improved and diversified to enhance quality of life by ensuring health, safety, and convenience. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which exhibit an extremely high surface area, abundant porosity, and unique surface chemistry, provide a promising framework for facilitating gas-sensor innovations. Enhanced understanding of conduction mechanisms of MOFs has facilitated their use as gas-sensing materials, and various types of MOFs have been developed by examining the compositional and morphological dependences and implementing catalyst incorporation and light activation. Owing to their inherent separation and absorption properties and catalytic activity, MOFs are applied as molecular sieves, absorptive filtering layers, and heterogeneous catalysts. In addition, oxide- or carbon-based sensing materials with complex structures or catalytic composites can be derived by the appropriate post-treatment of MOFs. This review discusses the effective techniques to design optimal MOFs, in terms of computational screening and synthesis methods. Moreover, the mechanisms through which the distinctive functionalities of MOFs as sensing materials, heterostructures, and derivatives can be incorporated in gas-sensor applications are presented.

Functionally Tailored Metal-Organic Framework Coatings for Mediating Ti Implant Osseointegration

Owing to their mechanical resilience and non-toxicity, titanium implants are widely applied as the major treatment modality for the clinical intervention against bone fractures. However, the intrinsic bioinertness of Ti and its alloys often impedes the effective osseointegration of the implants, leading to severe adverse complications including implant loosening, detachment, and secondary bone damage. Consequently, new Ti implant engineering strategies are urgently needed to improve their osseointegration after implantation. Remarkably, metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of novel synthetic material consisting of coordinated metal species and organic ligands, which have demonstrated a plethora of favorable properties for modulating the interfacial properties of Ti implants. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent progress in the development of MOF-coated Ti implants and highlights their potential utility for modulating the bio-implant interface to improve implant osseointegration, of which the discussions are outlined according to their physical traits, chemical composition, and drug delivery capacity. A perspective is also provided in this review regarding the current limitations and future opportunities of MOF-coated Ti implants for orthopedic applications. The insights in this review may facilitate the rational design of more advanced Ti implants with enhanced therapeutic performance and safety.

Optimizing the performance of Fe-based metal-organic frameworks in photo-Fenton processes: Mechanisms, strategies and prospects

Contaminants in water pose a significant challenge as they are harmful and difficult to treat using conventional methods. Therefore, various new methods have been proposed to degrade organic pollutants in water, among which the photo-Fenton process is considered promising. In recent years, Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) have gained attention and found applications in different fields due to their cost-effectiveness, non-toxic nature, and unique porous structure. Many researchers have applied Fe-MOFs to the photo-Fenton process in recent years and achieved good results. This review focuses on describing different strategies for enhancing the performance of Fe-MOFs in the photo-Fenton process. Also, the mechanism of MOF in the photo-Fenton process is described in detail. Finally, prospects for the application of Fe-MOFs in photo-Fenton systems for the treatment of organic pollutants in water are presented. This study provides information and ideas for researchers to use Fe-MOFs to remove organic pollutants from water by photo-Fenton process.

Visible-light-induced photocatalytic CO2 reduction over zirconium metal organic frameworks modified with different functional groups

The reduction of CO₂ into high value-added chemicals and fuels by a photocatalytic technology can relieve energy shortages and the environmental problems caused by greenhouse effects. In the current work, an amino-functionalized zirconium metal organic framework (Zr-MOF) was covalently modified with different functional groups via the condensation of Zr-MOF with 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde (PA), salicylaldehyde (SA), benzaldehyde (BA), and trifluoroacetic acid (TA), named Zr-MOF-X (X = PA, SA, BA, and TA), respectively, through the post-synthesis modification. Compared with Zr-MOF and Zr-MOF-TA, the introduction of PA, SA, or BA into the framework of Zr-MOF can not only enhance the visible-light harvesting and CO₂ capture, but also accelerate the photogenerated charge separation and transfer, thereby improving the photocatalytic ability of Zr-MOF for CO₂ reduction. These results indicate that the modification of Zr-MOF with electron-donating groups can promote the photocatalytic CO₂ reduction. Therefore, the current work provides an instructive approach to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of CO₂ reduction through the covalent modification of MOFs.

Metal-organic frameworks for wastewater treatment: Recent developments, challenges, and future prospects

Wastewater treatment is critically important for the existence of life on earth; however, this approach involves the removal of toxic metal contaminants and organic pollutants, requiring efficient adsorbent materials. Within this agenda, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) appear to be potential materials due to their unique properties as efficient adsorbents, effective photocatalysts, and reliable semi-permeable membranes. Therefore, MOFs have undergone various modifications over the years without desirable success to improve adsorption capacity, hydro-stability, reaction kinetics, and reusability. Therefore, scientists around the world got engaged in MOF research for novel modifications, including defect engineering, carbonization, and membrane fabrication, at the laboratory scale. This review focuses on developing MOF-based adsorbents, photocatalysts, and semi-permeable membranes for wastewater treatment since 2015, emphasizing their structural-functional relationships. Finally, the challenges and opportunities with MOFs in wastewater treatment are also underlined for future efforts.

A stable core-shell metal-organic framework@covalent organic framework composite as solid-phase extraction adsorbent for selective enrichment and determination of flavonoids

Hydrophobization and stability is crucial for the practical application of most metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in extraction technique. In this study, a stable core-shell MOF@COF composite (NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@TAPB-FPBA-COF) was successfully prepared by Schiff base reaction and applied to solid-phase extraction (SPE) of hydrophobic flavonoids. Notably, the TAPB-FPBA-COF shell acts as a hydrophobic "shield", which not only improves the hydrophobicity and stability of hydrophilic NH2-MIL-101(Fe), but also makes the extraction efficiency of flavonoids from MOF@COF composite significantly higher than that of pure NH2-MIL-101(Fe) and TAPB-FPBA-COF. In addition, a sensitive analytical method with excellent linearities (0.1-500 ng mL-1, R2 ≥ 0.9967), low limits of detection (0.02-0.04 ng mL-1 for water; 0.04-0.07 ng mL-1 for grape juice; 0.06-0.08 ng mL-1 for honey), good repeatability (intra-day/inter-day precision are 1.86-5.37%/1.82-7.79%, respectively) and only 5 mg of adsorbent per cartridge was established by optimizing the SPE process combined with high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet-visible detector (HPLC-UV). Meanwhile, selectivity study and comparative experiments with the commercial C18 adsorbent showed that the MOF@COF adsorbent exhibited satisfactory extraction efficiency for flavonoids due to multiple interactions such as hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic, and π-π interactions. Finally, the good recoveries in grape juice (84.5-102.5%) and honey (87.5-104.6%) samples further validated the applicability of the proposed method in complex samples.

Sequential Water Sorption/Desorption of a Nonporous Adaptive Organic Ligand Bridged Coordination Polymer for Atmospheric Moisture Harvesting

Moisture harvesters with favourable attributes such as easy synthetic availability and good processability as alternatives for atmospheric moisture harvesting (AWH) are desirable. This study reports a novel nonporous anionic coordination polymer (CP) of uranyl squarate with methyl viologen (MV2+ ) as charge balancing ions (named U-Squ-CP) which displays intriguing sequential water sorption/desorption behavior as the relative humidity (RH) changes gradually. The evaluation of AWH performance of U-Squ-CP shows that it can absorb water vapor under air atmosphere at a low RH of 20 % typical of the levels found in most dry regions of the world, and have good cycling durability, thus demonstrating the capability as a potential moisture harvester for AWH. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report on non-porous organic ligand bridged CP materials for AWH. Moreover, a stepwise water-filling mechanism for the water sorption/desorption process is deciphered by comprehensive characterizations combining single-crystal diffraction, which provides a reasonable explanation for the special moisture harvesting behaviour of this non-porous crystalline material.

Fast Water Transport in UTSA-280 via a Knock-Off Mechanism

Water and other small molecules frequently coordinate within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These coordinated molecules may actively engage in mass transfer, moving together with the transport molecules, but this phenomenon has yet to be examined. In this study, we explore a unique water transfer mechanism in UTSA-280, where an incoming water molecule can displace a coordinated molecule for mass transfer. We refer to this process as the "knock-off" mechanism. Despite UTSA-280 possessing one-dimensional channels, the knock-off transport enables water movement along the other two axes, effectively simulating a pseudo-three-dimensional mass transfer. Even with a relatively narrow pore width, the knock-off mechanism enables a high water flux in the UTSA-280 membrane. The knock-off mechanism also renders UTSA-280 superior water/ethanol diffusion selectivity for pervaporation. To validate this unique mechanism, we conducted 1 H and 2 H solid-state NMR on UTSA-280 after the adsorption of deuterated water. We also derived potential energy diagrams from the density functional theory to gain atomic-level insight into the knock-off and the direct-hopping mechanisms. The simulation findings reveal that the energy barrier of the knock-off mechanism is marginally lower than the direct-hopping pathway, implying its potential role in enhancing water diffusion in UTSA-280.

Methyl-Functionalized Al-Based MOF ZJU-620(Al): A Potential Physisorbent for Carbon Dioxide Capture

Developing Al-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with moisture-resistance ability is a challenge for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture. Methyl-functionalized Al-based MOF ZJU-620(Al), with excellent chemical-thermal stability and specific surface area of 1347 m2/g, observed here, is a potential adsorbent for CO2 capture with good recyclability and large capacity up to 4.25 mmol/g at 298 K and 1 atm. CO2 molecules are largely trapped on two types of sites. One (site I) is near the AlO6 clusters, and another (site II) is between two parallel benzene rings with a distance of 6.64 Å. ZJU-620(Al) can be used for CO2/N2 (15/85) separation with the excellent selectivity up to 107.20 at 273 K and 31.93 at 298 K, and the separation factor of 13.68. It is also with excellent moisture-resistance ability due to 5% breakthrough time (outlet concentration reached the 5% of inlet concentration) without reduction at 80% relative humidity than under dry conditions. Water molecules occupy a small amount of CO2 adsorption site I, but they almost do not occupy the CO2 adsorption site II due to hydrophobic methyl-functional ligands. Moreover, CO2 can be adsorbed on the ZJU-620(Al) surface through C═O···H binding of water molecules with high affinity. Thus, ZJU-620(Al) is a candidate adsorbent for CO2 capture and separation especially under humidity conditions.

Covalent connections between metal-organic frameworks and polymers including covalent organic frameworks

Hybrid composite materials combining metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and polymers have emerged as a versatile platform for a broad range of applications. The crystalline, porous nature of MOFs and the flexibility and processability of polymers are synergistically integrated in MOF-polymer composite materials. Covalent bonds, which form between two distinct materials, have been extensively studied as a means of creating strong molecular connections to facilitate the dispersion of "hard" MOF particles in "soft" polymers. Numerous organic transformations have been applied to post-synthetically connect MOFs with polymeric species, resulting in a variety of covalently connected MOF-polymer systems with unique properties that are dependent on the characteristics of the MOFs, polymers, and connection modes. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the development and strategies involved in preparing covalently connected MOFs and polymers, including recently developed MOF-covalent organic framework composites. The covalent bonds, grafting strategies, types of MOFs, and polymer backbones are summarized and categorized, along with their respective applications. We highlight how this knowledge can serve as a basis for preparing macromolecular composites with advanced functionality.

Deinterpenetration of IRMOF-9

One of the iconic characteristics of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is the possesssion of guest-accessible pores. Increasing pore size has a direct and often beneficial impact on a MOF's adsorption and separation properties. However, as pore size increases, the resulting void spaces are often filled by interpenetrated frameworks, where one or more networks crystallize within the pore system of another identical network, reducing the MOF's free volume and pore size. Furthermore, due to the thermodynamic favorability of interpenetration during solvothermal synthesis, techniques to synthetically differentiate interpenetrated from non-interpenetrated MOFs are paramount. This study reports the synthesis of deinterpenetrated IRMOF-9 via halide mediated deinterpenetrative conversion of Zn4 O-derived IRMOF-9. IRMOF-9, when treated with ethylammonium bromide, is quasi-selectively etched, revealing the non-interpenetrated analogue, IRMOF-10 (deinterpenetrated IRMOF-9), which can be isolated prior to complete dissolution by the bromide solution. Dye adsorption, surface area and pore size distribution analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction are consistent with successful deinterpenetration.

Linker engineering toward near-infrared-I emissive metal-organic frameworks for amine detection

Herein, organic linker-based near-infrared-I (NIR-I) emissive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with a maximum emission peak at 741 nm, were synthesized via linker engineering. By integration of stronger acceptor and donor groups into one linker, a significant bathochromic-shift is realized. This MOF exhibits great selectivity and sensitivity for aniline and p-phenylenediamine detection. This finding provides new insights into the rational design of NIR-MOFs for sensing and related applications.

Template-Free Synthesis and Multifunctional Application of Foam HKUST-1

Hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (HP-MOFs) have attracted a lot of attention in recent years because their hierarchical pores have critical importance in strengthening their performance, including guest diffusion kinetics, catalytic activity, and selectivity, especially with reference to large molecules. However, the preparation method for simple, controllable, and stable HP-MOFs at a micro-/meso-/macroscopic scale is still lacking. Herein, we showed several forms of HKUST-1 (HKUST = Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) by simply changing the copper source and solvent type, including original micron HKUST-1 (O-HKUST-1), half-foam HKUST-1 (HF-HKUST-1), and fully foam HKUST-1 (F-HKUST-1). Compared to O-HKUST-1, HF-HKUST-1 and F-HKUST-1 possessed an apparent hierarchically porous structure due to the high fusion of HKUST-1 nanocrystals. Especially in F-HKUST-1, all of the HKUST-1 nanocrystals were tightly integrated into each other, which formed a holistic hollow foam structure. Hence, F-HKUST-1 exhibited the highest adsorption capacity toward large molecules, including proteases, phosphotungstic acid, and organic dyes. Meanwhile, F-HKUST-1 presented the highest photocatalytic degradation capability for rhodamine B. Furthermore, F-HKUST-1, loaded with phosphotungstic acid (F-HKUST-1@PTA), which was used as a catalyst, indicated a catalytic capacity comparable to that of a homogeneous catalyst (pure phosphotungstic acid).

Synthesis and photochemical modification of monolayer thin MOF flakes for incorporation in defect free polymer composites

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with benzophenone linker molecules are characterized by their ability to undergo photochemical postsynthetic modification. While this approach opens up almost unlimited possibilities for tailoring materials to specific applications, the processability of the large particles is still lacking. In this work, we present a new approach to fabricate micro flakes of the stable Zr-bzpdc-MOF (bzpdc = benzophenone-4-4'-dicarboxylate) with a thickness of only a few monolayers. The crystalline and nanoporous flakes form dispersions in acetone that are stable for months. Embedding the flakes in polymer composites was investigated as one of many possible applications. Zr-bzpdc-MOF micro flakes were decorated with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) via a photochemical postsynthetic modification and incorporated into silicon elastomers. The PDMS functionalization allows covalent cross-linking between the MOF and the polymer while maintaining the porosity of the MOF. The resulting hybrid materials provide defect-free interfaces and show preferential adsorption of CO2 over CH4, making them attractive for gas separation or sensing applications. The work should serve as a basis for bringing bzpdc-MOFs into real-world applications - in polymeric membranes, but also beyond.

3D ZnII-Based coordination polymer: Synthesis, structure and fluorescent sensing property for nitroaromatic compounds

A water-stable Zn^II-based coordination polymer (CP) with excellent photophysical behavior, namely [Zn₂L(atez)(H₂O)₂] (compound 1; H₃L = 4-(2',3'-dicarboxylphenoxy); atez = 5-aminotetrazole), was successfully prepared by the solvothermal reaction of Zn ions with a π-conjugated and semi-rigid multicarboxylate ligand H₃L in the presence of N-containing linker atez. Compound 1 displays a hierarchically pillared three-dimensional (3D) (3,4,5)-connected (4·6²) (4²·6⁴) (4³·6⁴·8³) net which is based on two-dimensional (2D) multicarboxylate- Zn^II layers strutted by the atez ligands. Sensing investigations of compound 1 reveal that this material can selectively and sensitively detect nitroaromatic compounds in water suspension through fluorescence quenching effect. In particular, it is worth noting that it shows highly specific detection of nitrobenzene (NB) and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) with remarkable quenching constants (K_SV = 7.5 × 10⁴ M^-1 for NB and K_SV = 1.9 × 10⁵ M^-1 for TNP) and low limit of detection (LOD = 0.93 μM for NB and LOD = 0.36 μM for TNP). Investigations reveal that the probable mechanisms for such sensing processes are the concurrent presence of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) as well as photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between the CP and nitroaromatic molecules. This work not only offers an effective route to improve the application of fluorescent CPs but also provide one novel probable fluorescence probe for nitroaromatic compounds.

Precision Covalent Organic Frameworks for Surface Nucleation Control

Unwanted accumulation of ice and lime scale crystals on surfaces is a long-standing challenge with major economic and sustainability implications. Passive inhibition of icing and scaling by liquid-repellent surfaces are often inadequate, susceptible to surface failure under harsh conditions, and unsuitable for long-term/real-life usages. Such surfaces often require a multiplicity of additional features such as optical transparency, robust impact resistance, and ability to prevent contamination from low surface energy liquids. Unfortunately, most promising advances have relied on using perfluoro compounds, which are bio-persistent and/or highly toxic. Here it is shown that organic, reticular mesoporous structures, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), may offer a solution. By exploiting simple and scalable synthesis of defect-free COFs and rational post-synthetic functionalization, nanocoatings with precision nanoporosity (morphology) are prepared that can inhibit nucleation at the molecular level without compromising the related contamination prevention and robustness. The results offer a simple strategy to exploit the nanoconfinement effect, which remarkably delays the nucleation of ice and scale formation on surfaces. Ice nucleation is suppressed down to -28 °C, scale formation is avoided for >2 weeks in supersaturated conditions, and jets of organic solvents impacting at Weber numbers >105 are resisted with surfaces that also offer optical transparency (>92%).

One-step-one-pot hydrothermally derived metal-organic-framework-nanohybrids for integrated point-of-care diagnostics of SARS-CoV-2 viral antigen/pseudovirus utilizing electrochemical biosensor chip

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a global catastrophe, affecting the health and economy of the human community. It is required to mitigate the impact of pandemics by developing rapid molecular diagnostics for SARS-CoV-2 virus detection. In this context, developing a rapid point-of-care (POC) diagnostic test is a holistic approach to the prevention of COVID-19. In this context, this study aims at presenting a real-time, biosensor chip for improved molecular diagnostics including recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein and SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus detection based on one-step-one-pot hydrothermally derived CoFeBDCNH₂-CoFe₂O₄ MOF-nanohybrids. This study was tested on a PalmSens-EmStat Go POC device, showing a limit of detection (LOD) for recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein of 6.68 fg/mL and 6.20 fg/mL in buffer and 10% serum-containing media, respectively. To validate virus detection in the POC platform, an electrochemical instrument (CHI6116E) was used to perform dose dependent studies under similar experimental conditions to the handheld device. The results obtained from these studies were comparable indicating the capability and high detection electrochemical performance of MOF nanocomposite derived from one-step-one-pot hydrothermal synthesis for SARS-CoV-2 detection for the first time. Further, the performance of the sensor was tested in the presence of Omicron BA.2 and wild-type D614G pseudoviruses.

Rational design of stable functional metal-organic frameworks

Functional porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been explored for a number of potential applications in catalysis, chemical sensing, water capture, gas storage, and separation. MOFs are among the most promising candidates to address challenges facing our society related to energy and environment, but the successful implementation of functional porous MOF materials are contingent on their stability; therefore, the rational design of stable MOFs plays an important role towards the development of functional porous MOFs. In this Focus article, we summarize progress in the rational design and synthesis of stable MOFs with controllable pores and functionalities. The implementation of reticular chemistry allows for the rational top-down design of stable porous MOFs with targeted topological networks and pore structures from the pre-selected building blocks. We highlight the reticular synthesis and applications of stable MOFs: (1) MOFs based on high valent metal ions (e.g., Al3+, Cr3+, Fe3+, Ti4+ and Zr4+) and carboxylate ligands; (2) MOFs based on low valent metal ions (e.g., Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+) and azolate linkers. We envision that the synthetic strategies, including modulated synthesis and post-synthetic modification, can potentially be extended to other more complex systems like metal-phosphonate framework materials.

pH-Stable Zn(II) Coordination Polymer as a Multiresponsive Turn-On and Turn-Off Fluorescent Sensor for Aqueous Medium Detection of Al(III) and Cr(VI) Oxo-Anions

Nowadays, coordination polymers (CPs) are promising candidates as sensory materials for their high sensitivity, improved selectivity, fast responsive nature, as well as good recyclability. However, poor chemical stability often makes their practical usage limited. Herein, employing a mixed ligand approach, we constructed a chemically robust CP, {[Zn2L2(DPA)2]·3H2O}n (IITKGP-70, IITKGP stands for the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur), which exhibited excellent framework robustness not only in water but also over a broad range of pH solutions (pH = 3-11). The developed framework displayed high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of trivalent Al3+ ions and toxic hexavalent Cr(VI)-oxo anions in an aqueous medium. The developed framework exhibited an aqueous medium Al3+ turn-on phenomenon with a limit of detection (LOD) value of 1.29 μM, whereas a turn-off effect was observed for toxic oxo-anions (Cr2O72- and CrO42-) having LOD values of 0.27 and 0.71 μM, respectively. Both turn-on and turn-off mechanisms are speculated via spectroscopic methods coupled with several ex situ studies. Such a multiresponsive nature (both turn-on and turn-off) for aqueous medium detection of targeted cations and anions simultaneously in a single platform coupled with high robustness, ease of scalability, recyclability, and fast-responsive nature makes IITKGP-70 highly fascinating as a sensory material for real-world applications.

MFM-300(Sc): a chemically stable Sc(III)-based MOF material for multiple applications

Developing robust multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is the key to advancing the further deployment of MOFs into relevant applications. Since the first report of MFM-300(Sc) (MFM = Manchester Framework Material, formerly known as NOTT-400), the development of applications of this robust microporous MOF has only grown. In this review, a summary of the applications of MFM-300(Sc), as well as some emerging advanced applications, have been discussed. The adsorption properties of MFM-300(Sc) are presented systematically. Particularly, this contribution is focused on acid and corrosive gas adsorption. In addition, recent applications for catalysis based on the outstanding hemilabile Sc-O bond character are highlighted. Finally, some new research areas are introduced, such as host-guest chemistry and biomedical applications. This highlight aims to showcase the recent advances and the potential for developing new applications of this promising material.

A SIFSIX-MOF constructed from a metalloligand yields enhanced stability for selective CO2 adsorption

The first example of a metalloligand(ML)-based non-interpenetrated SIFSIX MOF [Cu(ML)2(SiF6)]n (ML = Cu(pyac)2 = bis[3-(4-pyridyl)pentane-2,4-dionato]copper(II)) exhibits one-dimensional pore channels decorated with accessible Cu2+ sites that provide superior water vapor stability and CO2 selectivity over CH4vs. similar materials constructed from non-metal containing organic ligands.

Highly Robust Metal-Organic Framework for Efficiently Catalyzing Knoevenagel Condensation and the Strecker Reaction under Solvent-Free Conditions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recognized as one of the most promising porous materials and offer great opportunities for the rational design of new catalytic solids having great structural diversity and functional tunability. Despite numerous inherent merits, their chemical environment instability limits their practical usage and demands further exploration. Herein, by employing the mixed-ligand approach, we have designed and developed a robust 3D Co-MOF, [Co2(μ2-O)(TDC)2(L)(H2O)2]·2DMF (H2TDC = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid, L = 3,3'-azobispyridine), IITKGP-50 (IITKGP stands for the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur), which exhibited excellent framework robustness not only in water but also in a wide range of aqueous pH solutions (pH = 2-12). Taking advantage of superior framework robustness and the presence of high-density open metal sites, IITKGP-50 was further explored in catalyzing the two-component Knoevenagel condensation reaction and three-component Strecker reactions. Moreover, to verify the size selectivity of IITKGP-50, smaller to bulkier substrates in comparison with the MOF's pore cavity (8.1 × 5.6 Å2) were employed, in which relatively lesser conversions for the sterically bulkier aldehyde derivatives confirmed that the catalytic cycle occurs inside the pore cavity. The easy scalability, lower catalyst loading compared to that of benchmark MOFs, magnificent conversion rate over a wide range of substrates, and excellent recyclability without significant performance loss made IITKGP-50 a promising heterogeneous catalyst candidate.

Preparation, Characterization, and Application of Metal Oxide-Doped Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) attract the attention of researchers due to their unique properties, such as high surface area, porosity, and stability. Therefore, in this study, the synthesis of zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIF-8), a subclass of MOFs, and copper oxide (Cu2O) and manganese oxide (MnO2) containing ZIF-8 was carried out by a mixing method with methanol. The characterization results show that the polyhedral structure of ZIF-8 was prepared with a surface area of 2088 m2/g and a crystallite size of 43.48 nm. Then, each and mixture of two metal oxides were introduced into the ZIF-8 crystal structure. It was found that the surface area and pore volumes of all metal/ZIF-8 samples decreased with metal loading, depending on the type and ratio of metal oxides. The ZIF-8 containing 4.0 wt % Cu2O and 1.0 wt % MnO2 had the highest surface area (2084 m2/g), which was closest to that of ZIF-8. The polyhedral structure was maintained by the addition of both metal oxides, and the crystal size of the material decreased with the loading of MnO2 to the ZIF-8 structure. All of the synthesized samples were analyzed in supercapacitor applications and a relatively higher value of specific capacitance was obtained for Cu-Mn/ZIF-8 due to higher surface area and improved conductivity. In addition to supercapacitor applications, the properties of metal/ZIF-8 are also promising for applications such as catalysts, membranes, and gas storage.

MIL-88B(Fe)-NH2: an amine-functionalized metal-organic framework for application in a sensitive electrochemical sensor for Cd2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+ ion detection

We propose here an electrochemical platform for multi-heavy metal ion detection in water based on MIL-88B(Fe)-NH₂, an amine-functioned metal-organic framework (MOF) for modifying the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Herein, MIL-88B(Fe)-NH₂ with abundant functionalized amine groups can play the role of capture sites for the enrichment of metal ions before electrochemical oxidation sensing. MIL-88B(Fe)-NH₂ was synthesized under optimized conditions through a solvothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transition electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. MIL-88B(Fe)-NH₂ was then drop-casted on GCE to electrochemically determine the Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ion concentrations by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The electrochemical sensor exhibits excellent electrochemical performance toward Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions in the large linear ranges of 0.025-1.000 μM, 0.3-10.0 μM and 0.6-10.0 μM with limits of detection that are 2.0 × 10^-10 M, 1.92 × 10^-7 M and 3.81 × 10^-7 M, respectively. The fabricated sensor also shows high reliability and good selectivity. This MIL-88B(Fe)-NH₂ application strategy is promising for the evaluation of various heavy metal ions in water.

MOFganic Chemistry: Challenges and Opportunities for Metal-Organic Frameworks in Synthetic Organic Chemistry

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous, crystalline solids constructed from organic linkers and inorganic nodes that have been widely studied for applications in gas storage, chemical separations, and drug delivery. Owing to their highly modular structures and tunable pore environments, we propose that MOFs have significant untapped potential as catalysts and reagents relevant to the synthesis of next-generation therapeutics. Herein, we outline the properties of MOFs that make them promising for applications in synthetic organic chemistry, including new reactivity and selectivity, enhanced robustness, and user-friendly preparation. In addition, we outline the challenges facing the field and propose new directions to maximize the utility of MOFs for drug synthesis. This perspective aims to bring together the organic and MOF communities to develop new heterogeneous platforms capable of achieving synthetic transformations that cannot be replicated by homogeneous systems.

Aflatoxin detection technologies: recent advances and future prospects

Aflatoxins have posed serious threat to food safety and human health. Therefore, it is important to detect aflatoxins in samples rapidly and accurately. In this review, various technologies to detect aflatoxins in food are discussed, including conventional ones such as thin-layer chromatography (TLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay (GICA), radioimmunoassay (RIA), fluorescence spectroscopy (FS), as well as emerging ones (e.g., biosensors, molecular imprinting technology, surface plasmon resonance). Critical challenges of these technologies include high cost, complex processing procedures and long processing time, low stability, low repeatability, low accuracy, poor portability, and so on. Critical discussion is provided on the trade-off relationship between detection speed and detection accuracy, as well as the application scenario and sustainability of different technologies. Especially, the prospect of combining different technologies is discussed. Future research is necessary to develop more convenient, more accurate, faster, and cost-effective technologies to detect aflatoxins.

Recent advances in metal-organic framework/carbon nanotube nanocomposites for developing analytical applications

Nanoscience shows promise for scientific advancement in many sectors, such as biology, energy, materials, environment, and manufacturing. Nanocomposites are mixtures of two or more materials, one of which is nanosized particles. The composites are expected to show combined features resulting in general enhancements in their physical and chemical properties. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are coordination polymers that have attracted attention from researchers in recent years due to their porosity and controllable functionality. Another example of interesting nanomaterials is carbon nanotubes (CNTs) which are also known for their mechanical and thermal properties. Incorporation of both these materials into a nanocomposite has shown an enhancement in properties and conquered challenges in the defects of construction. This mini-review sheds light on the recent synthetic approaches and characterization of MOF-CNT nanocomposites in order to access porous selective nanocomposites that can improve analyte detection in environmental matrixes and biological systems. A summary of the chemical composition of nanocomposites, analytes in the target, and analytical techniques used is provided.

How safe are nanoscale metal-organic frameworks?

Owing to the size scales that can be accessed, the nanoscale has opened doors to new physical and chemical properties, not seen in the bulk. These properties are leveraged by nanomaterials (NMs) across a plethora of applications. More recently, nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (nMOFs) have witnessed explosive growth due to the modularity of their chemical constituents, the ability to modify their composition and structure, and exceptional properties such as permanent porosity and high surface areas. These properties have prompted the investigation of these materials for applications in biological and environmental contexts. However, one aspect that is often ignored in these discussions is their safety at a nanoscale. In this mini review, we aim to initiate a discussion on the safety and toxicity of nMOFs, drawing parallels with the existing guidelines and literature on the safety of inorganic NMs. We first describe why nMOFs are of considerable interest to the scientific community followed by a discussion on routes through which they can be exposed to the environment and living organisms, particularly shedding light on their transformation mechanisms. The review also discusses the factors affecting toxicity of nMOFs, such as their size, shape, morphology, and composition. We briefly highlight potential mechanisms of toxicity and conclude with describing the need to transition towards data-intensive computational approaches such as machine learning to establish nMOFs as credible materials for their envisioned applications.

Cathodic deposition of MOF films: mechanism and applications

Metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films could be used for ion/molecular sieving, sensing, catalysis, and energy storage, but thus far no large-scale applications are known. One of the reasons is the lack of convenient and controllable fabrication methods. This work reviews the cathodic deposition of MOF films, which has advantages (e.g., simple operations, mild conditions, and controllable MOF film thickness/morphology) over other reported techniques. Accordingly, we discuss the mechanism of the cathodic deposition of MOF films which consists of the electrochemically triggered deprotonation of organic linkers and the formation of inorganic building blocks. Thereafter, the main applications of cathodically deposited MOF films are introduced with the aim of showing this technique's wide-ranging applications. Finally, we give the remaining issues and outlooks of the cathodic deposition of MOF films to drive its future development.

Efficient removal of veterinary drugs from aqueous solutions using magnetically separable carbonaceous materials derived from cobalt and iron metal-organic frameworks

Rapid synthesis of carbon-based magnetic materials derived from cobalt and iron metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), ZIF-67, and MIL-100(Fe), by microwave-assisted method, followed by carbonization under a N₂ atmosphere is described in this study. The carbon-derived MOFs (CDMs) were evaluated for the removal of the emerging pollutants sulfadiazine (SDZ) and flumequine (FLU) used as veterinary drugs. The study aimed to link the adsorption behavior with their surface properties and elemental composition. C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100(Fe) showed hierarchical porous structures with specific surface areas of 295.6 and 163.4 m² g^-1, respectively. The Raman spectra of the CDMs show the characteristic D and G bands associated with defect-rich carbon and sp² graphitic carbon, respectively. The CDMs exhibit cobalt species (Co₃O₄, CoO, and Co) in C-ZIF-67 and iron species (Fe₂O₃, Fe₃O₄, and Fe) in C-MIL-100 (Fe) which are related to the magnetic behavior of CDMs. C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100 (Fe) had saturation magnetization values of 22.9 and 53.7 emu g^-1, respectively, allowing easy solid-liquid separation using a magnet. SDZ and FLU removal rates on CDMs follow pseudo-second-order kinetics, and adsorption isotherms fit the Langmuir model based on regression coefficient values. Adsorption thermodynamics calculations showed that the adsorption of SDZ and FLU by CDMs was a thermodynamically favorable process. Therefore, these properties of C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100 (Fe) and their regeneration ability facilitate their use as adsorbents for emerging pollutants.

Gold nanoparticle decorated post-synthesis modified UiO-66-NH2 for A3-coupling preparation of propargyl amines

In this report, the novel UiO‑66‑NH₂ based-MOF(Zr) catalytic system which further modified with nitrogen-rich organic ligand (5-aminotetrazole) using post synthetic modification (PSM) approach has been prepared here as an efficient catalyst to promote the A³-coupling preparation of propargyl amines in green aquatic media. This newly highly efficient catalyst was synthesized upon Zr-based MOF (UiO‑66‑NH₂) which successfully functionalized with 2,4,6‑trichloro‑1,3,5‑triazine (TCT) and 5‑aminotetrazole, following through stabilization of gold metal (Au) nanopartilces. The addition of N-rich organic ligand through post-synthesis modification which can be assisted to stabilize the bister and stable gold nanoparticles caused to unique structure of the final composite in favor of the progress of the A³ coupling reaction. Also several strategies comprising XRD, FT-IR, SEM, BET, TEM, TGA, ICP, EDS and elemental mapping analyzes, were used to indicate the successful preparation of the UiO-66-NH₂@ Cyanuric Chloride@ 5-amino tetrazole/Au-NPs. The results of productivity catalyst are accomplished in good to excellent yields for all sort of reactions under mild conditions which is a proof of superior activity heterogeneous catalyst containing Au-nanoparticles. In addition, the suggested catalyst represented excellent reusability with no remarkable loss in activity up 9 sequential runs.

Principles of Design and Synthesis of Metal Derivatives from MOFs

Materials derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated exceptional structural variety and complexity and can be synthesized using low-cost scalable methods. Although the inherent instability and low electrical conductivity of MOFs are largely responsible for their low uptake for catalysis and energy storage, a superior alternative is MOF-derived metal-based derivatives (MDs) as these can retain the complex nanostructures of MOFs while exhibiting stability and electrical conductivities of several orders of magnitude higher. The present work comprehensively reviews MDs in terms of synthesis and their nanostructural design, including oxides, sulfides, phosphides, nitrides, carbides, transition metals, and other minor species. The focal point of the approach is the identification and rationalization of the design parameters that lead to the generation of optimal compositions, structures, nanostructures, and resultant performance parameters. The aim of this approach is to provide an inclusive platform for the strategies to design and process these materials for specific applications. This work is complemented by detailed figures that both summarize the design and processing approaches that have been reported and indicate potential trajectories for development. The work is also supported by comprehensive and up-to-date tabular coverage of the reported studies.

Fe-Based Metal Organic Frameworks (Fe-MOFs) for Bio-Related Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials composed of metal ions and organic ligands. Due to their large surface area, easy modification, and good biocompatibility, MOFs are often used in bio-related fields. Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs), as important types of MOF, are favored by biomedical researchers for their advantages, such as low toxicity, good stability, high drug-loading capacity, and flexible structure. Fe-MOFs are diverse and widely used. Many new Fe-MOFs have appeared in recent years, with new modification methods and innovative design ideas, leading to the transformation of Fe-MOFs from single-mode therapy to multi-mode therapy. In this paper, the therapeutic principles, classification, characteristics, preparation methods, surface modification, and applications of Fe-MOFs in recent years are reviewed to understand the development trends and existing problems in Fe-MOFs, with the view to provide new ideas and directions for future research.

Cage-Based Metal-Organic Framework as an Artificial Energy Receptor for Highly Sensitive Detection of Serotonin

Artificial synthetic receptors toward functional biomolecules can serve as models to provide insights into understanding the high binding affinity of biological receptors to biomolecules for revealing their law of life activities. The exploration of serotonin receptors, which can guide drug design or count as diagnostic reagents for patients with carcinoid tumors, is of great value for clinical medicine but is highly challenging due to complex biological analysis. Herein, we report a cage-based metal-organic framework (NKU-67-Eu) as an artificial chemical receptor with well-matched energy levels for serotonin. The energy transfer back from the analyte to the framework enables NKU-67-Eu to recognize serotonin with excellent neurotransmitter selectivity in human plasma and an ultra-low limit of detection of 36 nM. Point-of-care visual detection is further realized by the colorimetry change of NKU-67-Eu toward serotonin with a smartphone camera.

A metal-organic framework-supported dinuclear iron catalyst for hydroboration of carbonyl compounds

Preparation of catalytically active dinuclear transition metal complexes with an open coordination sphere is a challenging task because the metal sites tend to be "saturated" with excess donor atoms around during synthesis. By isolating the binding scaffolds with the metal-organic framework (MOF) skeleton and installing metal sites through post-synthetic modification, we succeed in constructing a MOF-supported metal catalyst, namely FICN-7-Fe2, with dinuclear Fe₂ sites. FICN-7-Fe2 effectively catalyses the hydroboration of a broad range of ketone, aldehyde, and imine substrates with a low loading of 0.05 mol%. Remarkably, kinetic measurements showed that FICN-7-Fe2 is 15 times more active than its mononuclear counterpart FICN-7-Fe1, indicating that cooperative substrate activation on the two Fe centres significantly enhances the catalysis.

UiO-66 framework with an encapsulated spin probe: synthesis and exceptional sensitivity to mechanical pressure

Probes sensitive to mechanical stress are in demand for the analysis of pressure distribution in materials, and the design of pressure sensors based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly promising due to their structural tunability. We report a new pressure-sensing material, which is based on the UiO-66 framework with trace amounts of a spin probe (0.03 wt%) encapsulated in cavities. To obtain this material, we developed an approach for encapsulation of stable nitroxide radical TEMPO ((2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl) into the micropores of UiO-66 during its solvothermal synthesis. Pressure read-out using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy allows monitoring the degradation of the defected MOF structure upon pressurization, where full collapse of pores occurs at as low a pressure as 0.13 GPa. The developed methodology can be used in and ex situ and provides sensitive tools for non-destructive mapping of pressure effects in various materials.
