Abstract
Impaired inhibitory control is one of the still debated underlying mechanisms of trait impulsivity. The Cognitive Energetic Model accounts for the role of energetic factors mediating task performance. The aim of the present study was to compare inhibitory control functions of adults with high and low impulsivity by using a modified Eriksen flanker task. Adults were classified as impulsive (n=15) and control (n=15) participants based on the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. Flanker trials had three levels of required effort manipulated by visual degradation. We analyzed RT, accuracy, and ERPs time-locked to the flanker stimuli. Reaction time of impulsive participants was generally slower than that of controls', but accuracy was similar across groups. N2c showed that monitoring of response conflict was modulated by task requirements independent of impulsivity. The P3 latency was delayed in the impulsive group indicating slower stimulus evaluation. The P3 amplitude was reduced in the control group for moderately degraded incongruent trials suggesting that the attentional resources were employed less. The Lateralized Readiness Potential (LRP) peaked later in the impulsive group irrespective of experimental effects. The amplitude of the positive-going LRP recorded in the incongruent condition was comparable across groups, but the latency was delayed partly supporting a stronger susceptibility to stimulus interference of impulsive participants. Their delayed incongruent negative-going LRP reflected a weaker response inhibition and a slower correct response organization. In conclusion, impaired inhibitory functions in impulsivity could not be unequivocally demonstrated, but we found a generalized lapse of motor activation.

Abstract
Impulsive risk taking contributes to deleterious outcomes among clinical populations. Indeed, pathological impulsivity and risk taking are common in patients with serious mental illness, and have severe clinical repercussions including novelty seeking, response disinhibition, aggression, and substance abuse. Thus, the current study seeks to examine self-reported impulsivity (Barratt Impulsivity Scale) and performance-based behavioral risk taking (Balloon Analogue Risk Task) in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Participants included 68 individuals with bipolar disorder, 38 with schizophrenia, and 36 healthy controls. Self-reported impulsivity was elevated in the bipolar group compared with schizophrenia patients and healthy controls, who did not differ from each other. On the risk-taking task, schizophrenia patients were significantly more risk averse than the bipolar patients and controls. Aside from the diagnostic group differences, there was a significant effect of antipsychotic (AP) medication within the bipolar group: bipolar patients taking AP medications were more risk averse than those not taking AP medications. This difference in risk taking because of AP medications was not explained by history of psychosis. Similarly, the differences in risk taking between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were not fully explained by AP effects. Implications for clinical practice and future research are discussed.

Abstract
Background Binge eating disorder (BED) represents a distinct eating disorder diagnosis. Current approaches assume increased impulsivity to be one factor leading to binge eating and weight gain. We used eye tracking to investigate both components of impulsivity, namely reward sensitivity and rash-spontaneous behaviour towards food in BED for the first time. Methods Overweight and obese people with BED (BED+; n = 25), without BED (BED−; n = 26) and healthy normal-weight controls (NWC; n = 25) performed a free exploration paradigm measuring reward sensitivity (experiment 1) and a modified antisaccade paradigm measuring disinhibited, rash-spontaneous behaviour (experiment 2) using food and nonfood stimuli. Additionally, trait impulsivity was assessed. Results In experiment 1, all participants located their initial fixations more often on food stimuli and BED+ participants gazed longer on food stimuli in comparison with BED− and NWC participants. In experiment 2, BED+ participants had more difficulties inhibiting saccades towards food and nonfood stimuli compared with both other groups in first saccades, and especially towards food stimuli in second saccades and concerning sequences of first and second saccades. BED− participants did not differ significantly from NWC participants in both experiments. Additionally, eye tracking performance was associated with self-reported reward responsiveness and self-control. Conclusions According to these results, food-related reward sensitivity and rash-spontaneous behaviour, as the two components of impulsivity, are increased in BED in comparison with weight-matched and normal-weight controls. This indicates that BED represents a neurobehavioural phenotype of obesity that is characterised by increased impulsivity. Interventions for BED should target these special needs of affected patients.

Abstract
A neurocognitive endophenotype has been proposed for stimulant dependence, based on behavioral measures of inhibitory response control associated with white matter changes in the frontal cortex. This study investigated the functional neuroimaging correlates of inhibitory response control, as functional activity serves as a more dynamic measure than brain structure, allowing refinement of the suggested endophenotype. Stimulant-dependent individuals (SDIs), their unaffected siblings (SIBs), and healthy controls (CTs) performed the stop-signal task, including stop-signal reaction time (SSRT) as a measure of response inhibition, while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging. SDIs had impaired response inhibition accompanied by hypoactivation in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC). In addition, they demonstrated hypoactivation in the anterior cingulate when failing to stop. In contrast, no hypoactivations were noted in their unaffected SIBs. Rather, they exhibited increased activation in the dorsomedial PFC relative to controls, together with inhibitory performance that was intermediate between that of the stimulant group and the healthy CT group. Such hyperactivations within the neurocircuitry underlying response inhibition and control are suggestive of compensatory mechanisms that could be protective in nature or could reflect coping with a pre-existing vulnerability, thus expressing potential aspects of resilience. The functional activation associated with response inhibition and error monitoring showed differential patterns of results between SDIs and their unaffected first-degree relatives, suggesting that the proposed endophenotype does not generalize to functional brain activity.

Abstract
Patients with binge eating disorder (BED) show generally increased impulsivity and especially increased food-related impulsivity. Both are closely linked to the core pathology of BED, which relates to regular binge eating episodes with experienced loss of control. The antisaccade task is an established paradigm assessing response inhibition as a pivotal component of impulsivity. It requires participants to execute antisaccades; that is, they are supposed to look in the opposite direction of a stimulus that automatically catches attention by appearing in the peripheral visual field. High rates of prosaccades to the peripheral stimuli are considered indicators of increased impulsivity. Presenting food pictures as peripheral stimuli, this task can be used to investigate food-related impulsivity. We propose modifications of this task in order to design it as an antisaccadic training in which BED patients practise the suppression of food-related responses, which should result in enhanced control over their eating behaviour.

Abstract
Impulsivity characterises various psychiatric disorders, particularly attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Evidence shows that ADHD symptoms are associated with dopamine dysfunction and alleviated with methylphenidate, a drug that reduces dopamine transporter availability. ADHD-like symptoms and impulsive traits are continuously distributed across the general population. Here, we aimed to investigate the dopaminergic basis of impulsivity and other ADHD-related traits in healthy individuals by studying the association of these traits with striatal dopamine transporter availability. Single-photon emission computed tomography with [(123)I] FP-CIT was performed on 38 healthy males. Impulsivity was measured using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) and hyperactivity-impulsivity and inattention using the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS). We found that greater dopamine transporter availability was associated with higher BIS impulsivity but not with ADHD-related traits. The association with BIS was significant after accounting for individual differences in age and neuroticism. These results suggest that individual differences in the dopamine system may be a neural correlate of trait impulsivity in healthy individuals.
