Abstract
A simple one-pot two bond-forming reaction for the rapid construction of cyclometalated gold(III) complexes with fully π-conjugated tetradentate ligand is reported. The coupling of the bifunctional gold(III) precursor with the bifunctional aromatic compound has led to the formation of two regioisomers with either C- or N-coordination. Through monitoring by high-throughput high performance liquid chromatography, the regioselectivity of the reaction has been effectively tuned toward the formation of a single isomer, allowing easy separation of the metal complexes. The structures of the complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography, and the photophysical, electrochemical, and electroluminescence (EL) studies have been carried out. Computational study has been performed to provide insights into the nature of the excited states. Isomeric effect has been shown to have a significant influence on the EL behavior of the organic light-emitting devices.

Abstract
An efficient geometrical E→Z isomerisation of alkenyl silanes is disclosed via selective energy transfer using an inexpensive organic sensitiser. Characterised by operational simplicity, short reaction times (2 h), and broad substrate tolerance, the reaction displays high selectivity for trisubstituted systems (Z/E up to 95:5). In contrast to thermal activation, directionality results from deconjugation of the π-system in the Z-isomer due to A1,3 -strain thereby inhibiting re-activation. The structural importance of the β-substituent logically prompted an investigation of mixed bis-nucleophiles (Si, Sn, B). These versatile linchpins also undergo facile isomerisation, thereby enabling a formal anti-metallometallation. Mechanistic interrogation, supported by a theoretical investigation, is disclosed together with application of the products to the stereospecific synthesis of biologically relevant target structures.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are central to many organic synthesis methodologies. Traditionally, Pd, Ni, Cu, and Fe catalysts are used to promote these reactions. Recently, many studies have showed that both homogeneous and heterogeneous Au catalysts can be used for activating selective cross-coupling reactions. Here, an overview of the past studies, current trends, and future directions in the field of gold-catalyzed coupling reactions is presented. Design strategies to accomplish selective homocoupling and cross-coupling reactions under both homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions, computational and experimental mechanistic studies, and their applications in diverse fields are critically reviewed. Specific topics covered are: oxidant-assisted and oxidant-free reactions; strain-assisted reactions; dual Au and photoredox catalysis; bimetallic synergistic reactions; mechanisms of reductive elimination processes; enzyme-mimicking Au chemistry; cluster and surface reactions; and plasmonic catalysis. In the relevant sections, theoretical and computational studies of AuI /AuIII chemistry are discussed and the predictions from the calculations are compared with the experimental observations to derive useful design strategies.

Abstract
Due to the high oxidation potential between AuI and AuIII , gold redox catalysis requires at least stoichiometric amounts of a strong oxidant. We herein report the first example of an electrochemical approach in promoting gold-catalyzed oxidative coupling of terminal alkynes. Oxidation of AuI to AuIII was successfully achieved through anode oxidation, which enabled facile access to either symmetrical or unsymmetrical conjugated diynes through homo-coupling or cross-coupling. This report extends the reaction scope of this transformation to substrates that are not compatible with strong chemical oxidants and potentiates the versatility of gold redox chemistry through the utilization of electrochemical oxidative conditions.

Abstract
The development of orthogonal Csp2 -Csp2 coupling regimes to the omnipresent Pd-catalysis class would enable an additional dimension of modularity in the construction of densely functionalized biaryl motifs. In this context, the identification of potent functional groups for selective transformations is in high demand. Although organogermanium compounds are generally believed to be of low reactivity in homogenous catalysis, this report discloses the highly efficient and orthogonal reactivity of aryl germanes with arenes under gold catalysis. The method is characterized by mildness, the employment of an air- and moisture-stable gold catalyst, and robustness. Our mechanistic studies show that aryl germanes are highly reactive with Au(I) and Au(III). Our computational data suggest that the origin of this reactivity primarily lies in the relatively low bond dissociation energy and as such low distortion energy to reach the key bond activating transition state.

Abstract
The mechanism of the gold-catalyzed oxidative cross-coupling of arenes and alkynes has been studied in detail combining stoichiometric experiments with putative reaction intermediates and DFT calculations. Our data suggest that ligand exchange between the alkyne, the Au(i)-catalyst and the hypervalent iodine reagent is responsible for the formation of both an Au(i)-acetylide complex and a more reactive "non-symmetric" I(iii) oxidant responsible for the crucial Au(i)/Au(iii) turnover. Further, the reactivity of the in situ generated Au(iii)-acetylide complex is governed by the nature of the anionic ligands transferred by the I(iii) oxidant: while halogen ligands remain unreactive, acetato ligands are efficiently displaced by the arene to yield the observed Csp2-Csp cross-coupling products through an irreversible reductive elimination step. Finally, the nature of competitive processes and catalyst deactivation pathways has also been unraveled. This detailed investigation provides insights not only on the specific features of the species involved in oxidative gold-catalyzed cross couplings but also highlights the importance of both ancillary and anionic ligands in the reactivity of the key Au(iii) intermediates.

Abstract
The selective functionalization of C-H bonds at the arene para position is highly challenging using transition metal catalysis. Iridium-catalyzed borylation has emerged as a leading technique for arene functionalization, but there are only a handful of strategies for para-selective borylation, which operate on specific substrate classes and use bespoke ligands or catalysts. We describe a remarkably general protocol which results in para-selectivity on some of the most common arene building blocks (anilines, benzylamines, phenols, benzyl alcohols) and uses standard borylation ligands. Our strategy hinges upon the facile conversion of the substrates into sulfate or sulfamate salts, wherein the anionic arene component is paired with a tetrabutylammonium cation. We hypothesize that the bulk of this cation disfavors meta-C-H borylation, thereby promoting the challenging para-selective reaction.

Abstract
Rhodium catalysis has been extensively used for ortho-C-H functionalization reactions, and successfully extended to meta-C-H functionalization. Its application to para-C-H activation remains an unmet challenge. Herein we disclose the first example of such a reaction, with the Rh-catalyzed para-C-H olefination of arenes. The use of a Si-linked cyanobiphenyl unit as a traceless directing group leads to highly para-selective arene-olefin couplings.

Abstract
The ability of the hemilabile (P,N) MeDalphos ligand to trigger oxidative addition of iodoarenes to gold has been thoroughly studied. Competition experiments and Hammett correlations substantiate a clear preference of gold for electron-enriched substrates both in stoichiometric oxidative addition reactions and in catalytic C-C cross-coupling with 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene. This feature markedly contrasts with the higher reactivity of electron-deprived substrates typically encountered with palladium. Based on DFT calculations and detailed analysis of the key transition states (using NBO, CDA and ETS-NOCV methods in particular), the different behavior of the two metals is proposed to result from inverse electron flow between the substrate and metal. Indeed, oxidative addition of iodobenzene is associated with a charge transfer from the substrate to the metal at the transition state for gold, but opposite for palladium. The higher electrophilicity of the gold center favors electron-rich substrates while important back-donation from palladium favors electron-poor substrates. Facile oxidative addition of iodoarenes combined with the propensity of gold(iii) complexes to readily react with electron-rich (hetero)arenes prompted us to apply the (MeDalphos)AuCl complex in the catalytic arylation of indoles, a challenging but very important transformation. The gold complex proved to be very efficient, general and robust. It displays complete regioselectivity for C3 arylation, it tolerates a variety of functional groups at both the iodoarene and indole partners (NO2, CO2Me, Br, OTf, Bpin, OMe…) and it proceeds under mild conditions (75 °C, 2 h).

Abstract
A novel palladium-catalyzed interannular selective C-H silylation of 1,1'-biaryl-2-acetamides is described. The combination of palladium catalyst with copper oxidant enables meta- or ortho-selective C-H silylation by employing hexamethyldisilane as a trimethylsilyl source, which relies on the control of NBE derivatives as a switch, thus providing straightforward access to divergent silicon-containing 1,1'-biaryl-2-acetamides.

Abstract
Organo(trialkyl)silanes have several advantages, including high stability, low toxicity, good solubility, easy handling, and ready availability compared with heteroatom-substituted silanes. However, methods for the cross-coupling of organo(trialkyl)silanes are limited, most probably because of their exceeding robustness. Thus, a practical method for the cross-coupling of organo(trialkyl)silanes has been a long-standing challenging research target. This article discusses how aryl(trialkyl)silanes can be used in cross-coupling reactions. A pioneering example is CuII catalytic conditions with the use of electron-accepting aryl- or heteroaryl(triethyl)silanes and aryl iodides. The reaction forms biaryls or teraryls. This design concept can be extended to Pd/CuII -catalyzed cross-coupling polymerization reactions between such silanes and aryl bromides or chlorides and to CuI -catalyzed alkylation using alkyl halides.

Abstract
Herein, the first example of gold-catalyzed benzylation of (hetero)aryl boronic acids with (hetero)benzyl bromides to give the corresponding cross-coupling products in moderate to good yields is reported. The reaction proceeds through a possible intermolecular SN 2-type reaction pathway to give a wide variety of di(hetero)arylmethanes as the desired products. An intriguing reaction mechanism has been proposed on the basis of control experiments, 31 P-NMR spectroscopic detection and DFT calculations.

Abstract
Aromatic C-H bond activation has attracted much attention due to its versatile applications in the synthesis of aryl-containing chemicals. The major challenge lies in the minimization of the activation barrier and maximization of the regioselectivity. Here, we report the highly selective activation of the central aromatic C-H bond in meta-aryne species anchored to a copper surface, which catalyzes the C-H bond dissociation. Two prototype molecules, i.e., 4',6'-dibromo- meta-terphenyl and 3',5'-dibromo- ortho-terphenyl, have been employed to perform C-C coupling reactions on Cu(111). The chemical structures of the resulting products have been clarified by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and noncontact atomic force microscopy. Both methods demonstrate a remarkable weakening of the targeted C-H bond. Density functional theory calculations reveal that this efficient C-H activation stems from the extraordinary chemisorption of the meta-aryne on the Cu(111) surface, resulting in the close proximity of the targeted C-H group to the Cu(111) surface and the absence of planarity of the phenyl ring. These effects lead to a lowering of the C-H dissociation barrier from 1.80 to 1.12 eV, in agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed direct site-selective functionalization of arene C–H bonds has emerged as an innovative approach for building the core structure of pharmaceutical agents and other versatile complex compounds. However, para-selective C–H functionalization has seldom been explored, only a few examples, such as steric-hindered arenes, electron-rich arenes, and substrates with a directing group, have been reported to date. Here we describe the development of a ruthenium-enabled para-selective C–H difluoromethylation of anilides, indolines, and tetrahydroquinolines. This reaction tolerates various substituted arenes, affording para-difluoromethylation products in moderate to good yields. Results of a preliminary study of the mechanism indicate that chelation-assisted cycloruthenation might play a role in the selective activation of para-CAr–H bonds. Furthermore, this method provides a direct approach for the synthesis of fluorinated drug derivatives, which has important application for drug discovery and development. Selective para-functionalization of substituted arenes is a formidable challenge in homogeneous catalysis. Here, the authors achieved the para-selective C-H difluoromethylation of anilides, indolines and tetrahydroquinolines with a ruthenium catalyst in good yields and apply it to the synthesis of bioactive compounds.

Abstract
Three-coordinate bipyridyl complexes of gold, [(κ2-bipy)Au(η2-C2H4)][NTf2], are readily accessed by direct reaction of 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy), or its derivatives, with the homoleptic gold ethylene complex [Au(C2H4)3][NTf2]. The cheap and readily available bipyridyl ligands facilitate oxidative addition of aryl iodides to the Au(I) center to give [(κ2-bipy)Au(Ar)I][NTf2], which undergo first aryl-zinc transmetalation and second C-C reductive elimination to produce biaryl products. The products of each distinct step have been characterized. Computational techniques are used to probe the mechanism of the oxidative addition step, offering insight into both the origin of the reversibility of this process and the observation that electron-rich aryl iodides add faster than electron-poor substrates. Thus, for the first time, all steps that are characteristic of a conventional intermolecular Pd(0)-catalyzed biaryl synthesis are demonstrated from a common monometallic Au complex and in the absence of directing groups.

Abstract
Regioselective functionalization of aromatic arenes has created a rapid insurgence in the modern era of organic chemistry. While the last few years have witnessed significant developments on site-selective ortho- and meta-C-H transformations, there existed very few reports on para-C-H functionalization. Recent advancements on template assisted protocols in para-C-H activation has emerged as a popular and convenient feat in this area. This review highlights the various protocols developed over the years for selective installation of suitable functional groups at the para-position of arenes thereby transforming them into value-added organic cores.
