Abstract
Ultrasound (US) is the imaging modality of choice for evaluation of superficial palpable lesions. A large proportion of these lesions have characteristic sonographic appearance and can be confidently diagnosed with US without the need for biopsy or other intervention. The Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU) recently published a Consensus Conference Statement on superficial soft tissue masses. The goal of this manuscript is (a) to serve as a sonographic pictorial review for palpable lesions based on the SRU statement, (b) present the typical sonographic features of palpable lesions that can be confidently diagnosed with US, and (c) provide an overview of other palpable lesions with a framework to interpret the US studies and advise on appropriate further management.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer always appears insidiously with few noticeable clinical symptoms. Due to its limitations, conventional ultrasound imaging can lead to missed or misdiagnosed cases. Surgery is still the primary treatment method of thyroid cancer, but removal of surrounding healthy tissues to minimize recurrence leads to overtreatment and added patient suffering. To address this challenge, herein, a nitroreductase (NTR) fluorescent probe, Ox-NTR, has been developed for detecting thyroid cancer and tracking the surgical removal of thyroid tumors by fluorescence imaging. The conjugated structure of oxazine 1 was disrupted, significantly reducing the issue of high background signals, thus effectively achieving low background fluorescence. Under hypoxic conditions, the nitro group of Ox-NTR can be reduced to an amine and subsequently decomposed into oxazine 1, emitting intense red fluorescence. Ox-NTR has a low detection limit of 0.09 μg/mL for NTR with excellent photostability and selectivity. Cellular studies show that Ox-NTR can effectively detect NTR levels in hypoxic thyroid cancer cells. Moreover, the ability of Ox-NTR of rapid response to thyroid cancer in vivo is confirmed by fluorescence imaging in mice, distinguishing tumors from normal tissues due to its superior low background fluorescence. Utilizing this fluorescence imaging method during surgical resection can guide the removal of tumors, preventing both missed tumor tissues and accidental removal of healthy tissue. In summary, the novel Ox-NTR offers precise detection capabilities that provide significant advantages over traditional imaging methods for thyroid cancer diagnosis and treatment, making it a valuable tool to guide tumor removal in surgical procedures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided injection of cyanoacrylate (CYA) and transjugular intrahepatic portal shunts (TIPSs) in the treatment of patients with cirrhosis with ruptured gastric varices. METHODS In this retrospective study, 105 patients with liver cirrhosis and gastric varicose veins who were admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University between April 2018 and April 2023 without nonselective β-blockers treatment and no portal vein thrombosis were evaluated. The patients were divided into the transjugular intrahepatic portal shunt (TIPS) group (n = 60) and the EUS-CYA group (n = 45) for the purpose of evaluating postoperative rebleeding rates, complications, survival rates, and other factors. RESULTS During the follow-up, there was no significant difference in the rebleeding rates between the TIPS group and EUS-CYA group within 3 months (5% vs 2.2%; P = 0.825; 10% vs 20%, P = 0.147). However, the TIPS group had significantly lower rebleeding rates than the EUS-CYA group at 6 months (10% vs 33.3%; P = 0.030) and 1 year or longer (11.7% vs 42.2%; P < 0.01). In terms of hepatic encephalopathy, the incidence rate of the TIPS group was significantly higher than that of the EUS-CYA group (20% vs 2.2%; P = 0.006). In addition, there was no difference in the survival rates between the two groups (93.3% vs 97.8%; P = 0.552). CONCLUSIONS TIPS is superior to EUS in preventing rebleeding in patients with ruptured varices of the fundus, but it has a higher incidence of hepatic encephalopathy, and there is no difference in long-term survival between the two groups.

Abstract
The meat industry has been significantly threatened by the risks of foodborne microorganisms and biofilm formation on fresh meat and processed products. A microbial biofilm is a sophisticated defensive mechanism that enables bacterial cells to survive in unfavorable environmental circumstances. Generally, foodborne pathogens form biofilms in various areas of meat-processing plants, and adequate sanitization of these areas is challenging owing to the high tolerance of biofilm cells to sanitization compared with their planktonic states. Consequently, preventing biofilm initiation and maturation using effective and powerful technologies is imperative. In this review, novel and advanced technologies that prevent bacterial and biofilm development via individual and combined intervention technologies, such as ultrasound, cold plasma, enzymes, bacteriocins, essential oils, and phages, were evaluated. The evidence regarding current technologies revealed in this paper is potentially beneficial to the meat industry in preventing bacterial contamination and biofilm formation in food products and processing equipment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the relation between liver fibrosis and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) patients and its risk factors. METHODS The current study was carried out at Tanta University Hospital, Tanta, Egypt, from May 2021 to January 2023 and included 84 MAFLD patients with CKD and 80 MAFLD patients without CKD. All participants had been examined by abdominal ultrasonography and transient elastography with controlled attenuation parameter. RESULTS Chronic kidney disease patients exhibited a greater incidence of fibrosis compared to patients without CKD (75.6% vs. 24.4%). Logistic analysis demonstrated that the presence of multiple health conditions, such as MAFLD, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, were individually linked to CKD. Gender and body mass index were not independent factors related to CKD. Additionally, factors such as age, hyperuricemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperbilirubinemia, and viral hepatitis, apart from MAFLD comorbidities, were independently linked to CKD. CONCLUSION Chronic kidney disease may represent a potential risk influence for liver fibrosis development in MAFLD patients.

Abstract
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided biliary drainage (EUS-BD) includes EUS-guided hepaticogastrostomy (EUS-HGS), EUS-guided choledochoduodenostomy (EUS-CDS), EUS-guided gallbladder drainage (EUS-GBD), EUS-guided antegrade stenting (EUS-AG) and EUS-guided rendezvous (EUS-RV). While EUS-HGS, EUS-CDS and EUS-GBD are transluminal drainage procedures, EUS-AG is a traspapillary drainage procedure and EUS-RV is a procedure intended to facilitate endoscopic retrograde cholangio pancreatography (ERCP) in instances of failed cannulation. These procedures were initially developed as options for endoscopic salvage of failed ERCP, but have evolved to become first-line interventions also for select indications over time as the technique and expertise improved. Several randomised controlled trials have demonstrated EUS-BD, especially EUS-CDS has similar or even better outcomes as compared to ERCP in malignant biliary obstruction. However, widespread adoption of these modalities is limited by the availability of expertise, steep learning curve, lack of standardization of techniques and cost. In this review, we aim to provide an overview of various EUS-BD procedures including the indications, accessories, technique, outcomes and follow-up of each of these procedures.

Abstract
The prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is increasing, and translational animal models are needed to develop novel treatments for this disease. The physiology and metabolism of pigs have a relatively high resemblance to humans, and the present study aimed to characterize choline-deficient and high-fat diet (CDAHFD)-fed Göttingen Minipigs as a novel animal model of MASLD/MASH. Göttingen Minipigs were fed CDAHFD for up to 5 mo, and the phenotype was investigated by the analysis of plasma parameters and repeated collection of liver biopsies. Furthermore, changes in hepatic gene expression during the experiment were explored by RNA sequencing. For a subset of the minipigs, the diet was changed from CDAHFD back to chow to investigate whether the liver pathology was reversible. Göttingen Minipigs on CDAHFD gained body weight, and plasma levels of cholesterol, AST, ALT, ALP, and GGT were increased. CDAHFD-fed minipigs developed hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis, which in 5 of 16 animals progressed to cirrhosis. During an 11-wk chow reversal period, steatosis regressed, while fibrosis persisted. Regarding inflammation, the findings were less clear, depending on the type of readout. MASH Human Proximity Scoring (combined evaluation of transcriptional, phenotypic, and histopathological parameters) showed that CDAHFD-fed Göttingen Minipigs resemble human MASLD/MASH better than most rodent models. In conclusion, CDAHFD-fed minipigs develop a MASH-like phenotype, which, in several aspects, resembles the changes observed in human patients with MASLD/MASH. Furthermore, repeated collection of liver biopsies allows detailed characterization of histopathological changes over time in individual animals.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The physiology and metabolism of pigs have a relatively high resemblance to humans. This study characterizes a new animal model of MASLD/MASH using CDAHFD-fed Göttingen Minipigs. Göttingen Minipigs fed CDAHFD gained weight and developed hepatic steatosis, inflammation, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. After an 11-wk chow-reversal period, hepatic steatosis and some inflammatory parameters reversed. Combined evaluation of phenotypic, transcriptional, and histological parameters revealed the minipig model showed a higher resemblance to human disease than many rodent models.

Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION To investigate whether sarcopenic obesity is associated with the progression of atherosclerotic lesions in older patients with diabetes and to identify the obesity components of sarcopenic obesity that best reflect atherosclerosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS In 118 inpatients aged ≥75 years with diabetes mellitus, sarcopenia defined as a low skeletal muscle mass and low grip strength was assessed, and sarcopenia coexisting with a high body-fat percentage or visceral fat area was defined as sarcopenic obesity. Correlations between the obesity components and atherosclerotic markers, including the carotid intima-media thickness, were analyzed; the intima-media thickness was analyzed in four groups with and without obesity and sarcopenia, and a multiple linear regression analysis adjusted for covariates was conducted to investigate whether sarcopenic obesity was independently associated with the intima-media thickness. RESULTS The visceral fat area and intima-media thickness showed positive correlations in the overall patients (P = 0.032) and the sarcopenia (P = 0.016) group but showed no associations in participants without sarcopenia. The intima-media thickness in the group showing sarcopenia with a high visceral fat area was significantly higher than that in the control group (P = 0.012). Sarcopenic obesity defined by a high body-fat percentage and high visceral fat area was independently associated with the intima-media thickness even after adjusting for age, sex, and atherogenic risk factors. However, sarcopenic obesity defined by a high visceral fat area was more strongly associated with the intima-media thickness (β = 0.384, P = 0.002) than that defined by the high body-fat percentage (β = 0.237, P = 0.068). CONCLUSIONS Sarcopenic obesity, especially that defined by visceral fat accumulation, reflected the risk of atherosclerotic lesion progression in older patients with diabetes.

Abstract
Accurate diagnosis of lymph node (LN) metastasis is vital for prognosis and treatment in patients with breast cancer. Imaging 1modalities such as ultrasound (US), MRI, CT, and 18F-FDG PET/CT are used for preoperative assessment. While conventional US is commonly recommended due to its resolution and sensitivity, it has limitations such as operator subjectivity and difficulty detecting small metastases. This review shows the microanatomy of axillary LNs to enhance accurate diagnosis and the characteristics of contrast-enhanced US (CE-US), which utilizes intravascular microbubble contrast agents, making it ideal for vascular imaging. A significant focus of this review is on distinguishing between two types of CE-US techniques for axillary LN evaluation: perfusion CE-US and lymphatic CE-US. Perfusion CE-US is used to assess LN metastasis via transvenous contrast agent administration, while lymphatic CE-US is used to identify sentinel LNs and diagnose LN metastasis through percutaneous contrast agent administration. This review also highlights the need for future research to clarify the distinction between studies involving "apparently enlarged LNs" and "clinical node-negative" cases in perfusion CE-US research. Such research standardization is essential to ensure accurate diagnostic performance in various clinical studies. Future studies should aim to standardize CE-US methods for improved LN metastasis diagnosis, not only in breast cancer but also across various malignancies.

Abstract
Advances in various imaging modalities for breast lesions have improved diagnostic capabilities not only for tumors but also for non-tumorous lesions. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) plays a crucial role not only in the differential diagnosis of breast lesions, identification of sentinel lymph nodes, and diagnosis of lymph node metastasis but also in assessing the therapeutic effects of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). In CEUS, two image interpretation approaches, i.e., qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis, are employed and applied in various clinical settings. In this paper, we review CEUS for breast lesions, including its various applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Italian Association of Preeclampsia (AIPE) and the Italian Society of Perinatal Medicine (SIMP) developed clinical questions on maternal hemodynamics state of the art. STUDY DESIGN AIPE and SIMP experts were divided in small groups and were invited to propose an overview of the existing literature on specific topics related to the clinical questions proposed, developing, wherever possible, clinical and/or research recommendations based on available evidence, expert opinion, and clinical importance. Draft recommendations with a clinical rationale were submitted to 8th AIPE and SIMP Consensus Expert Panel for consideration and approval, with at least 75% agreement required for individual recommendations to be included in the final version. RESULTS More and more evidence in literature underlines the relationship between maternal and fetal hemodynamics, as well as the relationship between maternal cardiovascular profile and fetal-maternal adverse outcomes such as fetal growth restriction and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Experts agreed on proposing a classification of pregnancy hypertension, complications, and cardiovascular states based on three different hemodynamic profiles depending on total peripheral vascular resistance values: hypodynamic (>1,300 dynes·s·cm-5), normo-dynamic, and hyperdynamic (<800 dynes·s·cm-5) circulation. This differentiation implies different therapeutical strategies, based drugs' characteristics, and maternal cardiovascular profile. Finally, the cardiovascular characteristics of the women may be useful for a rational approach to an appropriate follow-up, due to the increased cardiovascular risk later in life. CONCLUSION Although the evidence might not be conclusive, given the lack of large randomized trials, maternal hemodynamics might have great importance in helping clinicians in understanding the pathophysiology and chose a rational treatment of patients with or at risk for pregnancy complications. Abstract
Acquiring diagnostic ultrasound competencies and skills is crucial in modern health care, and achieving the practical experience is vital in developing the necessary anatomy interpretation and scan acquisition skills. However, traditional teaching methods may not be sufficient to provide hands-on practice, which is essential for this skill acquisition. This paper explores various modalities and instructors involved in ultrasound education to identify the most effective approaches. The field of ultrasound instruction is enriched by the diverse roles of physicians, anatomists, peer tutors, and sonographers. All these healthcare professionals can inspire and empower the next generation of ultrasound practitioners with continuous training and support. Physicians bring their clinical expertise to the table, while anatomists enhance the understanding of anatomical knowledge through ultrasound integration. Peer tutors, often medical students, provide a layer of social congruence and motivation to the learning process. Sonographers provide intensive practical experience and structured learning plans to students. By combining different instructors and teaching methods, success can be achieved in ultrasound education. An ultrasound curriculum organized by experts in the field can lead to more efficient use of resources and better learning outcomes. Empowering students through peer-assisted learning can also ease the burden on faculty. Every instructor must receive comprehensive didactic training to ensure high-quality education in diagnostic ultrasound.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this extended review of multicenter case series is to describe the prenatal ultrasound features and pathogenetic mechanisms underlying placental and umbilical cord anomalies and their relationship with adverse perinatal outcome. From an educational point of view, the case series has been divided in three parts; Part 1 is dedicated to placental abnormalities. METHODS Multicenter case series of women undergoing routine and extended prenatal ultrasound and perinatal obstetric care. RESULTS Prenatal ultrasound findings, perinatal care, and pathology documentation in cases of placental pathology are presented. CONCLUSIONS Our case series review and that of the medical literature confirms the ethiopathogenetic role and involvement of placenta abnormalities in a wide variety of obstetrics diseases that may jeopardize the fetal well-being. Some of these specific pathologies are strongly associated with a high risk of poor perinatal outcome.

Abstract
Changes in biomechanical properties such as elasticity modulus, viscosity, and poroelastic features are linked to the health status of biological tissues. Ultrasound elastography is a non-invasive imaging tool that quantitatively maps these biomechanical characteristics for diagnostic and treatment monitoring purposes. Mathematical models are essential in ultrasound elastography as they convert the raw data obtained from tissue displacement caused by ultrasound waves into the images observed by clinicians. This article reviews the available mathematical frameworks of continuum mechanics for extracting the biomechanical characteristics of biological tissues in ultrasound elastography. Continuum-mechanics-based approaches such as classical viscoelasticity, elasticity, and poroelasticity models, as well as nonlocal continuum-based models, are described. The accuracy of ultrasound elastography can be increased with the recent advancements in continuum modelling techniques including hyperelasticity, biphasic theory, nonlocal viscoelasticity, inversion-based elasticity, and incorporating scale effects. However, the time taken to convert the data into clinical images increases with more complex models, and this is a major challenge for expanding the clinical utility of ultrasound elastography. As we strive to provide the most accurate imaging for patients, further research is needed to refine mathematical models for incorporation into the clinical workflow.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Algorithms for quantifying liver fat content based on the ultrasound attenuation coefficient (AC) are currently available; however, little is known about whether their accuracy increases by applying quality criteria such as the interquartile range-to-median ratio (IQR/M) or whether the median or average AC value should be used. METHODS AC measurements were performed with the Aplio i800 ultrasound system using the attenuation imaging (ATI) algorithm (Canon Medical Systems, Otawara, Tochigi, Japan). Magnetic resonance imaging proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) was the reference standard. The diagnostic performance of the AC median value of 5 measurements (AC-M) was compared to that of AC average value (AC-A) of 5 or 3 acquisitions and different levels of IQR/M for median values or standard deviation/average (SD/A) for average values were also analyzed. Concordance between AC-5M, AC-5A, and AC3A was evaluated with concordance correlation coefficient (CCC). RESULTS A total of 182 individuals (94 females; mean age, 51.2y [SD: 15]) were evaluated. A total of 77 (42.3%) individuals had S0 steatosis (MRI-PDFF < 6%), 75 (41.2%) S1 (MRI-PDFF 6-17%), 10 (5.5%) S2 (MRI-PDFF 17.1-22%), and 20 (11%) S3 (MRI-PDFF ≥ 22.1%). Concordance of AC-5A and AC-3A with AC-5M was excellent (CCC: 0.99 and 0.96, respectively). The correlation with MRI-PDFF was almost perfect. Diagnostic accuracy of AC-5M, AC-5A, and AC3A was not significantly affected by different levels of IQR/M or SD/A. CONCLUSIONS The accuracy of AC in quantifying liver fat content was not affected by reducing the number of acquisitions (from five to three), by using the mean instead of the median, or by reducing the IQR/M or SD/A to ≤5%.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Shear Wave Elastography (SWE) offers quantitative insights into the hardness and elasticity characteristics of tissues. The objective of this study is to investigate the correlation between SWE of the menisci and MRI-assessed degenerative changes in the menisci, with the aim of providing novel reference source for improving non-invasive evaluation of meniscal degenerative alterations. METHODS The participants in this study were selected from patients who underwent knee joint MRI scans at our hospital from February 2023 to February 2024. The anterior horns of both the medial and lateral menisci were evaluated using SWE technique. The differences in elastic values of meniscus among different MRI grades were compared. The correlation between elastic values and MRI grades, as well as various parameters, was analyzed. Using MRI Grade 3 as the gold standard, the optimal cutoff value for meniscal tear was determined. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was employed to evaluate the reliability of repeated measurements performed by the same observer. RESULTS A total of 104 female participants were enrolled in this study, with 152 lateral menisci (LM) and 144 medial menisci (MM) assessed. For the male group, 83 individuals were included, with 147 LM and 145 MM evaluated. The results demonstrated statistically significant differences in the elasticity values of the menisci at the same anatomical sites across different MRI grades (P < 0.001). Within the same grade, the MM had higher elasticity values than the LM, showing a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). The elasticity values of the menisci were higher in males compared to females. There were statistically significant positive correlations between the elasticity values of the menisci and age, BMI, and MRI grade. The ICC for repeated measurements within the observer demonstrated good reliability (> 0.79). CONCLUSIONS The meniscal elasticity values measured by SWE exhibit a significant positive correlation with the grades of degeneration assessed by MRI. Furthermore, the elasticity values of the meniscus are found to increase with advancing age and elevated BMI.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Giant splenic artery aneurysms (SAAs) and pseudoaneurysms (SAPs) represent rare conditions, characterized by a diameter greater than or equal to 5 cm. The risk of rupture is increased compared to common SAAs and SAPs, necessitating urgent treatments to prevent it. Methods: This systematic review was conducted through a comprehensive search involving the PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases. A total of 82 patients and 65 articles were included in the analysis. For each patient, we investigated age, sex, symptoms, comorbidities, the presence of a true or a false aneurysm, the dimensional criteria used to define dilations as giant aneurysms or pseudoaneurysms, the dimension of the two greatest diameters, imaging studies, surgical treatment, post-operative length of stay (LOS), and post-operative follow-up. Results: The results revealed a similar incidence in both genders (43 males vs. 39 females) with a median age of 55.79 years. The most frequently described symptom was pain (59.76%). Thirteen cases were false aneurysms and 69 were true aneurysms. The mean greatest diameter was 9.90 cm. The CT scan was the most utilized imaging study (80.49%). Open, endovascular, and hybrid surgery were performed in 47, 26, and 9 patients, respectively, with complication rates of 14.89%, 23.08%, and 22.22% occurring for each treatment. The post-operative LOS was 12.29 days, 2.36 days, and 5 days, respectively. The median follow-up was 17.28 months overall. No recanalization was observed after endovascular procedures during the follow-up period. Conclusions: The dimensional criterion to define SAAs and SAPs as giant was most frequently that at least one diameter was ≥ 5 cm. The CT scan was the most frequently utilized radiological study to diagnose giant SAAs and SAPs. Finally, endovascular procedures, open surgeries, and hybrid treatments presented similar post-operative complication rates. The post-operative LOS was lower for the endovascular group, and the follow-up period did not show aneurysm recanalization in any patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Kidney biopsy is the standard of care for the diagnosis of various kidney diseases. In particular, chronic histopathologic lesions, such as interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy, can provide prognostic information regarding chronic kidney disease progression. In this study, we aimed to evaluate historadiological correlations between CT-based radiomic features and chronic histologic changes in native kidney biopsies and to construct and validate a radiomics-based prediction model for chronicity grade. METHODS We included patients aged ≥ 18 years who underwent kidney biopsy and abdominal CT scan within a week before kidney biopsy. Left kidneys were three-dimensionally segmented using a deep learning model based on the 3D Swin UNEt Transformers architecture. We additionally defined isovolumic cortical regions of interest near the lower pole of the left kidneys. Shape, first-order, and high-order texture features were extracted after resampling and kernel normalization. Correlations and diagnostic metrics between extracted features and chronic histologic lesions were examined. A machine learning-based radiomic prediction model for moderate chronicity was developed and compared according to the segmented regions of interest (ROI). RESULTS Overall, moderate correlations with statistical significance (P < 0.05) were found between chronic histopathologic grade and top-ranked radiomic features. Total parenchymal features were more strongly correlated than cortical ROI features, and texture features were more highly ranked. However, conventional imaging markers, including kidney length, were poorly correlated. Top-ranked individual radiomic features had areas under receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) of 0.65 to 0.74. Developed radiomics models for moderate-to-severe chronicity achieved AUCs of 0.89 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.75-0.99) and 0.74 (95% CI 0.52-0.93) for total parenchymal and cortical ROI features, respectively. CONCLUSION Significant historadiological correlations were identified between CT-based radiomic features and chronic histologic changes in native kidney biopsies. Our findings underscore the potential of CT-based radiomic features and their prediction model for the non-invasive assessment of kidney fibrosis.

Abstract
Mammary gland development research in dairy cattle has improved tremendously over the years, ranging from palpation to methods such as DNA/RNA sequencing, histological imaging, and medical imaging. Despite these advancements, there is limited evidence relating milk production with early mammary development due to incomplete and conflicting data. Further, data is typically not collected longitudinally in the same animals allowing for repeated measures analysis. Additional research is necessary to better understand development of the mammary gland and its direct relationship with subsequent ability to produce milk. As ultrasound has been shown to be a reliable method of visualizing mammary gland structure and parenchymal composition throughout the different stages of development in dairy cattle, it is possible that ultrasound technology can be used in future research to monitor and visualize longitudinal mammary development in dairy cattle noninvasively, and identify quantitative features indicative of milk production potential without culling. Identification of features indicative of higher milk production potential would not only aid in the selection of replacement heifers, but also has potential applications to human medicine with possible prediction of lactation potential in humans.

Abstract
The Valsalva maneuver (VM), commonly used to assess cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system functions, can induce changes in hemodynamic function that may affect cerebral vascular functionality, such as arterial elasticity. This study aimed to investigate the effects of low-pressure VM on cerebral arterial stiffness and cerebral vascular dynamics. Thirty-one healthy young participants (average age 21.58±1.72 years) were recruited for this study. These participants were instructed to maintain an expiratory pressure of 30-35 mmHg for 15 seconds. We measured the vasoconstriction and vasodilation diameters (VCD and VDD) of the common carotid artery (CCA), as well as systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP and DBP), before and after VM (PRE_VM and POST_VM). Additionally, we assessed mean arterial pressure (MAP), pulse pressure (PP), pulse wave velocity (PWV), and arterial stiffness. Our findings revealed significant increases in both the VCD and VDD of the CCA (2.15%, p = 0.039 and 4.55%, p<0.001, respectively), MAP (1.67%, p = 0.049), and DBP (1.10%, p = 0.029) following low-pressure VM. SBP showed an increasing trend, but this was not statistically significant (p = 0.108). Interestingly, we observed significant decreases in arterial stiffness and PWV in POST_VM when comparing with PRE_VM (p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). In conclusion, our study demonstrated the effectiveness of low-pressure VM in reducing the PWV and stiffness of the CCA. This suggests that low-pressure VM can be a simple and cost-effective method to reduce cerebrovascular stiffness in a brief interval, without the need for specific environmental conditions.

Abstract
Conventional radiography is widely used for postmortem foetal imaging, but its role in diagnosing congenital anomalies is debated. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of X-rays in detecting skeletal abnormalities and guiding genetic analysis and counselling. This is a retrospective analysis of all post-abortion diagnostic imaging studies conducted at a centre serving a population of over 300,000 inhabitants from 2008 to 2023. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics. X-rays of 81 aborted foetuses (total of 308 projections; mean: 3.8 projections/examination; SD: 1.79) were included. We detected 137 skeletal anomalies. In seven cases (12.7%), skeletal anomalies identified through radiology were missed by prenatal sonography. The autopsy confirmed radiological data in all cases except for two radiological false positives. Additionally, radiology failed to identify a case of syndactyly, which was revealed by anatomopathology. X-ray is crucial for accurately classifying skeletal abnormalities, determining the causes of spontaneous abortion, and guiding the request for genetic counselling. Formal training for both technicians and radiologists, as well as multidisciplinary teamwork, is necessary to perform X-ray examinations on aborted foetuses and interpret the results effectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The stiffness of the tumor microenvironment (TME) directly influences cellular behaviors. Radiotherapy (RT) is a common treatment for solid tumors, but the TME can impact its efficacy. In the case of liver cancer, clinical observations have shown that tumors within a cirrhotic, stiffer background respond less to RT, suggesting that the extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness plays a critical role in the development of radioresistance. METHODS This study explored the effects of ECM stiffness and the inhibition of lysyl oxidase (LOX) isoenzymes on the radiation response of liver cancer in a millimeter-sized three-dimensional (3D) culture. We constructed a cube-shaped ECM-based millimeter-sized hydrogel containing Huh7 human liver cancer cells. By modulating the collagen concentration, we produced two groups of samples with different ECM stiffnesses to mimic the clinical scenarios of normal and cirrhotic livers. We used a single-transducer system for shear-wave-based elasticity measurement, to derive Young's modulus of the 3D cell culture to investigate how the ECM stiffness affects radiosensitivity. This is the first demonstration of a workflow for assessing radiation-induced response in a millimeter-sized 3D culture. RESULTS Increased ECM stiffness was associated with a decreased radiation response. Moreover, sonoporation-assisted LOX inhibition with BAPN (β-aminopropionitrile monofumarate) significantly decreased the initial ECM stiffness and increased RT-induced cell death. Inhibition of LOX was particularly effective in reducing ECM stiffness in stiffer matrices. Combining LOX inhibition with RT markedly increased radiation-induced DNA damage in cirrhotic liver cancer cells, enhancing their response to radiation. Furthermore, LOX inhibition can be combined with sonoporation to overcome stiffness-related radioresistance, potentially leading to better treatment outcomes for patients with liver cancer. CONCLUSIONS The findings underscore the significant influence of ECM stiffness on liver cancer's response to radiation. Sonoporation-aided LOX inhibition emerges as a promising strategy to mitigate stiffness-related resistance, offering potential improvements in liver cancer treatment outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have advocated the use of ultrasound to diagnose distal forearm fractures in children. However, there is limited data on the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound for distal forearm fractures when conducted by pediatric surgeons or trainees who manage orthopedic injuries in children. The objective of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for pediatric distal forearm fractures when conducted by pediatric surgeons and trainees after minimal training. METHODS This diagnostic study was conducted in a tertiary hospital emergency department in Germany. Participants were children and adolescents under 15 years of age who presented to the emergency department with an acute, suspected, isolated distal forearm fracture requiring imaging. Pediatric surgeons and trainees, after minimal training for sonographic fracture diagnosis, performed 6-view distal forearm POCUS on each participant prior to X-ray imaging. All data was retrospectively collected from the hospital's routine digital patient files. The primary outcome was the diagnostic accuracy of POCUS compared to X-ray as the reference standard. RESULTS From February to June 2021, 146 children under 15 met all inclusion and exclusion criteria, and 106 data sets were available for analysis. Regarding the presence of a fracture, X-ray and Wrist-POCUS showed the same result in 99.1%, with 83/106 (78.3%) fractures detected in both modalities and one suspected buckle fracture on POCUS not confirmed in the radiographs. Wrist-POCUS had a sensitivity of 100% (95% CI [0.956, 1]) and a specificity of 95.8% (95% CI [0.789, 0.999]) compared to radiographs. In 6 cases, there were minor differences regarding a concomitant ulnar buckle. The amount of prior ultrasound training had no influence on the accuracy of Wrist-POCUS for diagnosing distal forearm fractures. All fractures were reliably diagnosed even when captured POCUS images did not meet all quality criteria. CONCLUSION Pediatric surgeons and trainees, after minimal training in POCUS, had excellent diagnostic accuracy for distal forearm fractures in children and adolescents using POCUS compared to X-ray.

Abstract
Background: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are a significant cause of primary care consultations. Differentiating between viral and bacterial infections is critical for effective treatment and to minimize unnecessary antibiotic use. This study investigates the impact of combining lung ultrasound (LUS) with capillary blood C-reactive protein (CRP) rapid testing on clinical decision-making for patients with LRTIs. Objectives: The primary objective is to assess how the integration of CRP testing and LUS influences antibiotic prescription decisions. The study aims to quantify the percentage change in antibiotic prescriptions before and after performing LUS, following history taking, clinical examination, and CRP testing. Methods: This analytical observational study will be conducted in six primary care centers within the Health Region of Lleida, Catalonia, serving a mixed urban and rural population of approximately 105,000 residents. The study will recruit 196 patients aged 18 and over, presenting with LRTI symptoms and not treated with antibiotics in the preceding 14 days. Participants will undergo CRP testing followed by LUS during their consultation. Statistical analyses, including linear regression, bivariate analysis, Pearson or Spearman correlation, and logistic regression, will be used to evaluate the impact of LUS on clinical decisions and its predictive value in diagnosing bacterial infections. Results and Conclusions: This study will provide insights into the role of LUS combined with CRP testing in improving diagnostic accuracy and guiding antibiotic prescription decisions in primary care. The findings aim to enhance treatment protocols for LRTIs, reducing unnecessary antibiotic use and improving patient outcomes.

Abstract
The rising prevalence of pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs), particularly intraductal papillary neoplasms (IPMNs), has been attributed to increased utilization of advanced imaging techniques. Incidental detection of PCLs is frequent in abdominal CT and MRI scans, with IPMNs representing a significant portion of these lesions. Surveillance of IPMNs is recommended due to their malignant potential; however, their overlapping imaging features with benign entities can lead to misdiagnosis, overtreatment, and overutilization of healthcare resources. This paper aims to highlight and differentiate lesions often mistaken for IPMNs, providing insight into their imaging characteristics, diagnostic challenges, and distinctive features while highlighting the incidence of wrong diagnosis for these lesions. These lesions include serous cystadenomas, cystic pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, mucinous cystic neoplasms, lymphoepithelial cysts, duodenal diverticula, pancreatic schwannomas, chronic pancreatitis, retention cysts, intrapancreatic accessory spleens, pancreatic lipomas, choledochal cysts, and others. Utilizing various imaging modalities, including contrast-enhanced CT, MRI, and EUS, alongside histological and molecular analyses, can aid in accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Understanding these mimicry scenarios is crucial to avoid unnecessary surveillance, interventions, and the burden they place on both patients and healthcare systems. Improved recognition of these lesions can lead to better patient outcomes and resource allocation.

Abstract
Introduction Ultrasound (US) imaging has emerged as a promising tool for assessing age-related muscle changes. This meta-analysis aimed to comprehensively evaluate the associations between US parameters and muscle strength, as well as sarcopenia-related functional performance in older adults by integrating data from multiple studies. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase until June 2023. Studies reporting Pearson's correlation coefficients between US parameters [echo intensity (EI), muscle thickness (MT), cross-sectional area (CSA), pinnations angle (PA), fascicle length (FL)] and measures of muscle strength or physical performance in older adults were included. Effect sizes were pooled using a random-effects model and presented in forest plots. Heterogeneity was assessed using I 2, and publication bias was evaluated using Egger's test. Results Twenty-eight studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis revealed moderate to strong correlations between EI, MT, and CSA with muscle strength. However, no significant associations were found between US parameters and gait speed. For chair stand tests, the strength of associations varied by test type, with weak correlations observed between echo intensity and muscle thickness with sit-to-stand tests. US parameters did not exhibit significant correlations with the Timed Up and Go test. Conclusion Ultrasonographic measurements of echo intensity (EI) and muscle thickness (MT) demonstrated moderate to strong correlations with muscle strength and functional assessments related to sarcopenia. To enhance the accuracy of sarcopenia diagnosis and the effectiveness of management strategies, there is a need for larger, longitudinal studies that evaluate a comprehensive range of ultrasonographic parameters. Abstract
Genetically encodable gas filled particles known as gas vesicles (GVs) have shown promise as a biomolecular contrast agent for ultrasound imaging and have the potential to be used as cavitation nuclei for ultrasound therapy. In this study, we used passive acoustic mapping techniques to characterize GV-seeded cavitation, utilizing 0.5 and 1.6 MHz ultrasound over peak rarefactional pressures ranging from 100 to 2200 kPa. We found that GVs produce cavitation for the duration of the first applied pulse, up to at least 5000 cycles, but that bubble activity diminishes rapidly over subsequent pulses. At 0.5 MHz the frequency content of cavitation emissions was predominantly broadband in nature, whilst at 1.6 MHz narrowband content at harmonics of the main excitation frequency dominated. Simulations and high-speed camera imaging suggest that the received cavitation emissions come not from individual GVs but instead from the coalescence of GV-released gas into larger bubbles during the applied ultrasound pulse. These results will aid the future development of GVs as cavitation nuclei in ultrasound therapy.

Abstract
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a predominant genetic disease, which is caused by mutations in PKD genes and is associated with DNA damage in cystic cells. The intrinsic stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway is crucial for recognizing damaged DNA in the cytosol, triggering the expression of inflammatory cytokines to activate defense mechanisms. However, the precise roles and mechanisms of STING in ADPKD remain elusive. In this study, we show that Pkd1 mutant mouse kidneys show upregulation of STING, which is stimulated by the DNAs of nuclear and mitochondrial origin. The activation of STING promotes cyst growth through increasing (1) the activation of NF-κB in Pkd1 mutant cells and (2) the recruitment of macrophages in the interstitial and peri-cystic regions in Pkd1 mutant mouse kidneys via NF-κB mediating the upregulation of TNF-α and MCP-1. Targeting STING with its specific inhibitor C-176 delays cyst growth in an early-stage aggressive Pkd1 conditional knockout mouse model and a milder long-lasting Pkd1 mutant mouse model. Targeting STING normalizes mitochondrial structure and function, decreases the formation of micronuclei, induces Pkd1 mutant renal epithelial cell death via p53 signaling, and decreases renal fibrosis in Pkd1 mutant mouse kidneys. These results support that STING is a novel therapeutic target for ADPKD treatment.

While ultrasonography (US) has proven effective in assessing age- or sex-related differences in muscle quality, limited information is available on sex differences in children. Quantitative ultrasonographic measurements, such as echo intensity (EI), EI bands (number of pixels across 50-unit intervals) and texture, may offer a comprehensive framework for identifying sex differences in muscle composition. The aim of our study was to examine the effect of sex on the rectus femoris (RF) muscle quality in children. We used EI (mean and bands) and texture as muscle quality estimates derived from B-mode US. We hypothesised that RF muscle quality differs significantly between girls and boys. Additionally, we also hypothesised that there is a significant correlation between EI bands and texture. Forty-four non-active healthy children were recruited (n = 22 girls, 12.8 ± 1.5 years; and n = 22 boys, 13.5 ± 1.2 years). RF was assessed using EI mean, EI bands, and texture analysis (homogeneity and correlation) using the Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix. The results revealed significant (p < 0.05) sex differences in RF EI bands and texture. Boys displayed higher values in the 0-50 EI band and had more homogeneous muscle texture than girls. Conversely, girls displayed greater values in the 51-100 EI band and had less homogenous texture compared to boys (p < 0.05). A positive correlation was observed between the 0-50 EI band and muscle homogeneity. However, the 51-100 EI band correlated negatively with homogeneity (p < 0.05), particularly for girls. In conclusion, our study revealed sex-specific differences in mean EI, EI bands, and texture of the RF muscle in children. The variations in the correlations between the first and second EI bands and texture reveal different levels of homogeneity in each band. This indicates that distinct muscle tissue constituents, such as intramuscular fat and/or connective tissue, may be reflected in EI bands. Overall, the methods used in this study may be useful for examining muscle quality in healthy children and those with medical conditions.

Abstract
(1) Background: Ultrasound attenuation imaging (ATI) is an innovative technique that allows for the evaluation of the degree of lipid infiltration of the liver parenchyma in a simple and non-invasive way. The objective of this study was to verify the applicability of the ATI method in the evaluation of hyperlipidemia. (2) Methods: This study included 53 dogs between January 2021 and December 2022, of which 21 were healthy (A) and 32 had hyperlipidemia (B). The dogs of Group B were divided into mild hyperlipidemic (B1; n = 15) and moderate/severe hyperlipidemic (B2; n = 17). Each dog underwent biochemical examination, B-mode ultrasound and ATI investigation at the liver level via a right intercostal approach. (3) Results: The mean AC value was significantly higher in Group B (0.95 ± 0.23 dB/cm/MHz) compared to Group A (0.81 ± 0.10 dB/cm/MHz). No statistically significant differences were highlighted regarding the ATI values between the subjects with mild and moderate/severe hyperlipidemia. (4) Conclusion: ATI could be a promising method for the non-invasive evaluation of hepatic steatosis in veterinary medicine.

Abstract
In the diagnosis of gynecological tumors, determining the benign or malignant nature of adnexal masses is a crucial and complex issue. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a relatively novel and increasingly used diagnostic method. Therefore, this study evaluated the diagnostic value of CEUS in differentiating benign and malignant adnexal masses through meta-analysis and systematic review. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for studies published up to April 2024 regarding the use of CEUS in diagnosing benign and malignant adnexal masses. STATA 14.0 software was used for data analysis, pooling the sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) of eligible studies. After initial screening, 305 studies were identified, 13 of which met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in this meta-analysis. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and DOR of CEUS for the diagnosis of benign and malignant adnexal masses were 0.92 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.88-0.95), 0.88 (95% CI: 0.82-0.93), 8.00 (95% CI: 5.00-12.90), 0.09 (95% CI: 0.06-0.14), and 91.00 (95% CI: 45.00-185.00), respectively. The area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.95 (95% CI: 0.93-0.97). CEUS is a noninvasive, nonradiative imaging modality with high accuracy and reliability in the diagnosis of benign and malignant adnexal masses. To provide an effective adjunct tool in the clinic, future studies can further explore the specific application value of CEUS and its performance in different populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES An excessive and abrupt increase in cerebral blood flow may cause blood vessel damage, leading to stroke. Therefore, appropriate methods to immediately regulate blood flow velocity are important. Through an analysis of 31 healthy adults, we therefore investigated whether stimulating the common carotid artery (CCA) using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) could modulate blood flow velocity in the CCA. METHODS Three stimulation intensities (below-threshold, threshold, and above-threshold) were applied in a random order. Blood velocity changes were examined by the measurement of peak systolic velocity (PSV) with Doppler ultrasound before, during, and after TENS stimulation. To evaluate arterial stiffness, pulse wave velocity (PWV) was calculated using CCA diameter, and blood pressure was measured before and after stimulation. RESULTS PSV changes in the below-threshold level were significant (p = 0.028). The PSV after below-threshold stimulation was significantly decreased by 2.23% compared to that before stimulation (p = 0.031). PWV showed no significant differences; however, a nonsignificant increase was observed immediately after stimulation only in the above-threshold condition. Above-threshold stimulation can increase vascular tone by activating the sympathetic nerve, possibly triggering vasoconstriction. CONCLUSIONS A decrease in blood flow velocity may not be expected upon the above-threshold stimulation. In contrast, the below-threshold stimulation immediately reduces blood flow velocity, without significantly affecting hemodynamic function, such as arterial flexibility. Therefore, this short-term and low electrical stimulation technique can help to lower vascular resistance and prevent vascular damage from rapid blood flow velocity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The research field of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine and especially in gastroenterology is rapidly progressing with the first AI tools entering routine clinical practice, for example, in colorectal cancer screening. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a highly reliable, low-risk, and low-cost diagnostic modality for the examination of the liver. However, doctors need many years of training and experience to master this technique and, despite all efforts to standardize CEUS, it is often believed to contain significant interrater variability. As has been shown for endoscopy, AI holds promise to support examiners at all training levels in their decision-making and efficiency. METHODS In this systematic review, we analyzed and compared original research studies applying AI methods to CEUS examinations of the liver published between January 2010 and February 2024. We performed a structured literature search on PubMed, Web of Science, and IEEE. Two independent reviewers screened the articles and subsequently extracted relevant methodological features, e.g., cohort size, validation process, machine learning algorithm used, and indicative performance measures from the included articles. RESULTS We included 41 studies with most applying AI methods for classification tasks related to focal liver lesions. These included distinguishing benign versus malignant or classifying the entity itself, while a few studies tried to classify tumor grading, microvascular invasion status, or response to transcatheter arterial chemoembolization directly from CEUS. Some articles tried to segment or detect focal liver lesions, while others aimed to predict survival and recurrence after ablation. The majority (25/41) of studies used hand-picked and/or annotated images as data input to their models. We observed mostly good to high reported model performances with accuracies ranging between 58.6% and 98.9%, while noticing a general lack of external validation. CONCLUSION Even though multiple proof-of-concept studies for the application of AI methods to CEUS examinations of the liver exist and report high performance, more prospective, externally validated, and multicenter research is needed to bring such algorithms from desk to bedside.

Abstract
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and intraductal ultrasound (IDUS) play very important roles in the field of biliary tract disease. Because of their excellent spatial resolution, the detection of small lesions and T- or N-staging of tumors have become possible. Additionally, contrast-enhanced EUS and the new imaging technique of detective flow imaging are reported to be useful for differential diagnosis. Furthermore, EUS-guided tissue acquisition is used not only for pathological diagnosis but also to collect tissue samples for cancer genome profiling. This review provides an overview of diagnosis utilizing the features and techniques of EUS and IDUS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish a practical risk stratification system (RSS) based on ultrasonography (US) and clinical characteristics for predicting soft tissue masses (STMs) malignancy. METHODS This retrospective multicenter study included patients with STMs who underwent US and pathological examinations between April 2018 and April 2023. Chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association of US and clinical characteristics with the malignancy of STMs in the training set. The RSS was constructed based on the scores of risk factors and validated externally. RESULTS The training and validation sets included 1027 STMs (mean age, 50.90 ± 16.64, 442 benign and 585 malignant) and 120 STMs (mean age, 51.93 ± 17.90, 69 benign and 51 malignant), respectively. The RSS was constructed based on three clinical characteristics (age, duration, and history of malignancy) and six US characteristics (size, shape, margin, echogenicity, bone invasion, and vascularity). STMs were assigned to six categories in the RSS, including no abnormal findings, benign, probably benign (fitted probabilities [FP] for malignancy: 0.001-0.008), low suspicion (FP: 0.008-0.365), moderate suspicion (FP: 0.189-0.911), and high suspicion (FP: 0.798-0.999) for malignancy. The RSS displayed good diagnostic performance in the training and validation sets with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) values of 0.883 and 0.849, respectively. CONCLUSION The practical RSS based on US and clinical characteristics could be useful for predicting STM malignancy, thereby providing the benefit of timely treatment strategy management to STM patients. CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT With the help of the RSS, better communication between radiologists and clinicians can be realized, thus facilitating tumor management. KEY POINTS There is no recognized grading system for STM management. A stratification system based on US and clinical features was built. The system realized great communication between radiologists and clinicians in tumor management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intravascular stent (IVaS) is sometimes used for suturing small vessels, but removing the stent after suturing is difficult. To overcome this problem, we developed an IVaS that integrates a stent and a manipulating string. This study aimed to investigate the usefulness of the modified IVaS (M-IVaS) by comparing it with conventional sutures (CS) and conventional IVaS (C-IVaS). METHODS Forty-five superficial femoral arteries from rats were resected and sutured. The rats were randomly divided into the following 3 groups: CS, M-IVaS, and C-IVaS, with 15 rats per group. Patency rate, operating time, and ultrasonographic blood flow dynamics were examined immediately after suturing. Patency tests, ultrasonographic evaluations, and histological investigations were performed 1 week (n = 5), 2 weeks (n = 5), and 6 weeks (n = 5) after surgery. RESULTS The 3 groups showed vessel patency in all cases immediately after suturing and at 1 week, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks after surgery. The mean operative time was 22.6 minutes for the CS group, 21.5 minutes for the M-IVaS group, and 25.9 minutes for the C-IVaS group. There were no significant differences in peak flow velocity and stenosis rate among the 3 groups as evaluated by ultrasonography. Histopathological evaluation revealed a similar recovery process of endothelial cells and no damage to the vascular wall. CONCLUSION The surgical time using M-IVaS was significantly shorter compared to that using C-IVaS. The M-IVaS reduced the inconvenience of C-IVaS removal. M-IVaS showed the same effectiveness as did the CS in terms of patency rate, operating time, ultrasonographic blood flow dynamics, and histological evaluation. M-IVaS can be used in the field of microsurgery.

Abstract
The innovative techniques in ultrasound have added a new dimension to investigating superficially located areas such as the contents of the scrotal sac. High frequency transducers, improved technology with the addition of elastography, contrast enhanced ultrasound and microvascular imaging has resulted in a further improvement in diagnostic capabilities. The ability to clearly demonstrate the presence or absence of vascularity within the area under investigation adds an additional dimension to operator confidence in establishing the presence of infarction, global or segmental, or the walls and cavity of an abscess in the testis or epididymis. Increased vascularity of a tumor aids the differential diagnosis based on the flow dynamics of the microbubble contrast, benign lesions likely to retain contrast. Elastography has the ability to ascertain the stiffness of tissue, and when used in conjunction with other ultrasound methods adds to the understanding of the likelihood of a malignant abnormality being present. All the different techniques come under the umbrella term 'multiparametric ultrasound', with the application in the scrotal sac detailed in this article.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted traditional medical education, prompting innovative teaching methods for practical skills training. The teledidactic TELUS ultrasound course, launched in 2020-2021, aimed to provide remote instruction in ultrasound techniques. OBJECTIVE This study assesses the long-term impact of the teledidactic ultrasound course conducted during the study years on current clinical practice. METHODS In 2024, a follow-up survey was conducted with former TELUS course students now practicing as physicians across various specialities. Participants rated their confidence in ultrasound examinations and its frequency in practice. RESULTS 21 out of 30 participants (70%) completed the survey. 71.4% rated the course experience as excellent (5/5 points). Most reported significant learning gains, especially in the FAST module. While all agreed the course enhanced their ultrasound skills, its impact on patient care received mixed reviews. Frequency of ultrasound use varied widely among specialities, with high use in surgery and internal medicine but less in psychiatry, neurology, and ophthalmology. Notably, 42,9% had not pursued further ultrasound training post-course. CONCLUSION The teledidactic ultrasound course effectively provided remote education, integrating skills into practice. Mixed reviews on patient care impact and speciality-specific ultrasound use suggest sustained integration depends on relevance and ongoing education. Self-assessment results support online ultrasound courses, indicating potential use in resource-limited or geographically constrained settings.

Abstract
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES To compare the diagnostic accuracy and grading ability of ultrasound-derived fat fraction (UDFF), controlled attenuation parameters (CAP), and hepatic/renal ratio (HRR) for hepatic steatosis in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) using magnetic resonance imaging proton density fat fraction (PDFF) as the gold standard. METHODS Patients suspected of having MASLD in our hospital between October 2023 and May 2024 were divided into the MASLD group and the control group. All patients underwent UDFF, CAP, and PDFF examinations. HRR was measured during routine ultrasound examination. In statistical analysis, we initially assessed the correlation between UDFF, CAP, HRR, and general characteristics of subjects with PDFF. Subsequently, receiver operating characteristic curve were employed to evaluate and compare the diagnostic performance of UDFF, CAP, and HRR for different grades of hepatic steatosis in MASLD. Their area under the curve, optimal cut-off value, sensitivity, and specificity were also determined. Finally, predictive factors determined hepatic steatosis in MASLD (PDFF≥6%) were identified through binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS 115 individuals were ultimately included in the MASLD group, while 102 were included in the control group. UDFF, CAP, and HRR were all positively correlated with PDFF. Among them, UDFF exhibited the strongest correlation with PDFF (ρ = 0.91). Furthermore, in the comparison of diagnostic efficacy among different grades of hepatic steatosis, UDFF outperformed CAP and HRR (p < 0.05). However, there were no statistically significant differences in AUCs between CAP and HRR across all three grades. The AUCs for UDFF in ≥S1, ≥S2, and ≥S3 were 0.99 (95% CI 0.97 to 1.00), 0.96 (95% CI 0.93 to 0.98), and 0.97 (95% CI 0.94 to 0.99), respectively. The optimal thresholds for UDFF are determined as follows: ≥ 6% for grade S1; ≥ 15% for grade S2; and ≥ 23% for grade S3. Multivariate analysis revealed that only age, UDFF, and CAP were important influencing factors for hepatic steatosis in MASLD. CONCLUSION The diagnostic accuracy of UDFF surpassed that of CAP and HRR in the detection and grading of hepatic steatosis in MASLD.

Abstract
Aim: This study aimed to explore the importance of an MRI-based radiomics nomogram in predicting the progression-free survival (PFS) of endometrial cancer.Methods: Based on clinicopathological and radiomic characteristics, we established three models (clinical, radiomics and combined model) and developed a nomogram for the combined model. The Kaplan-Meier method was utilized to evaluate the association between nomogram-based risk scores and PFS.Results: The nomogram had a strong predictive ability in calculating PFS with areas under the curve (ROC) of 0.905 and 0.901 at 1 and 3 years, respectively. The high-risk groups identified by the nomogram-based scores had shorter PFS compared with the low-risk groups.Conclusion: The radiomics nomogram has the potential to serve as a noninvasive imaging biomarker for predicting individual PFS of endometrial cancer.

Abstract
Ultrasound imaging is a vital imaging tool in musculoskeletal medicine, with the number of publications on ultrasound-guided surgery increasing in recent years, especially in minimally invasive procedures of sports, foot and ankle, and hand surgery. However, ultrasound imaging has drawbacks, such as operator dependency and image obscurity. Artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning (DL), a subset of AI, can address these issues. AI/DL can enhance screening practices for hip dysplasia and osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the humeral capitellum, improve diagnostic accuracy for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), and provide physicians with better prognostic prediction tools for patients with knee osteoarthritis. Building on these advancements, DL methods, including segmentation, detection, and localization of target tissues and medical instruments, also have the potential to allow physicians and surgeons to perform ultrasound-guided procedures more accurately and efficiently. This review summarizes recent advances in ultrasound-guided procedures for musculoskeletal diseases and provides a comprehensive overview of the utilization of AI/DL in ultrasound for musculoskeletal medicine, particularly focusing on ultrasound-guided surgery.

Abstract
Serpentine-like syndrome, characterized by the combination of intrathoracic stomach, a notably short esophagus anomaly, splenic abnormalities, and cervical spine malformations, has been associated with a high mortality rate since its identification in 2008. This report presents the case of a remarkable patient who recently celebrated her fifth birthday, marking her as the oldest documented individual with this syndrome to date. Highlighting the significance of comprehensive evaluations for concurrent malformations, the report discusses potential treatment modalities and challenges inherent in managing patients with this intricate syndrome. A comprehensive review of previously published cases is provided, comparing surgical interventions, causes of death, and age at the time of demise. This report underscores the importance of ongoing research and collaborative efforts to optimize outcomes for individuals afflicted with serpentine-like syndrome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), conventional therapies can lead to severe side effects and drug resistance. There is a need for alternative treatments that do not cause treatment resistance and have minimal or no side effects. Sonodynamic therapy (SDT), due to its noninvasive, multiple repeatability, localized treatment feature and do not cause treatment resistance, emerges as an alternative treatment option. However, it has not received sufficient attention in the treatment of AML especially acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). The aim of the study was to investigate the potential differentiation and antileukemic effects of acridine orange (AO)-mediated SDT on HL60 cells. METHODS Cell viability was determined by the 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide (MTT) method in the control, ultrasound, AO concentrations, and ultrasound-exposed AO concentrations groups. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to determine morphology, and flow cytometry was used to determine apoptosis, DNA cycle, cell volume, mitochondria membrane potential (Δψm), reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and differentiation markers (CD11b and CD15) expressions. Additionally, toluidine blue staining for semithin sections was used to determine differentiation. RESULTS The cytotoxicity of AO-mediated SDT on HL60 cells was significantly higher than other groups, and TEM images showed that it caused various morphological changes typical for apoptosis. Flow cytometry results showed the presence of early apoptosis, subG1 arrest, loss of Δψm, increase of intracellular ROS production, decreased cell volume, and increased expression of CD11b (1.3-fold) antigen and CD15 (1.2-fold) antigen. CONCLUSION Data showed that AO-mediated SDT significantly induced apoptosis in HL60 cells. Increased expression of CD11b and CD15 antigens and morphological findings demonstrated that AO-mediated SDT contributes to granulocytic differentiation in HL60 cells. AO-mediated SDT has potential as an alternative treatment of APL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Left atrial strain (LAS) assessment by speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) has been shown to be a remarkable means of quantifying LA function as an early marker of LV pathology. As exercise testing is also performed on a treadmill, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of upright posture on LAS in healthy athletes. METHODS Fifty male athletes (mean age 25.7 ± 7.3 years) underwent transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in the upright and left lateral positions. In addition to the conventional echocardiographic parameters, in all athletes, LA conduction strain (LAScd), contraction strain (LASct), reservoir strain (LASr), and maximum LA volume (LAVmax) were assessed by STE in both positions. RESULTS Comparing upright posture and the left lateral position, LAScd (-14.0 ± 5.9% vs. -27.4 ± 7.1%; p < 0.001), LASct (-4.6 ± 3.5% vs. -11.3 ± 4.1%; p < 0.001), LASr (18.7 ± 7.6% vs. 38.7 ± 8.0%; p < 0.001), and LAVmax (24.4 ± 8.8% vs. 50.0 ± 14.2%) differed significantly. CONCLUSIONS Upright posture has a significant effect on LA deformation, with decreased LAScd, LASct, and LASr. The results of this study contribute to the understanding of athletes' hearts and must be considered when performing echocardiography in healthy athletes on a treadmill.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evaluate pregnancy and neonatal outcomes with fetal cystic lymphatic malformations (LMs), excluding those arising from the posterior neck, to facilitate patient counseling. METHOD A systematic review was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidance. Case series and case reports published between 2000 and 2022 were included. RESULTS Sixty-five studies (96 fetuses) met the inclusion criteria. The average gestational age at diagnosis was 25.5 weeks with the commonest location being the anterior neck (28%). All patients were diagnosed with LM using two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound. Prenatal progression in LM size, presence of intralesional bleeding, or fetal hydrops occurred in 70% (41/59), 9% (5/59), and 3% (2/59), respectively. Chromosomal and structural abnormalities were reported in 4% (2/52) and 2% (2/96), respectively. Overall livebirth rate was 94% (79/84); 12/96 resulted in termination and 5/84 in in utero demise. The average gestational age of delivery was 37.7 weeks. Exactly 19% (15/79) had a vaginal birth, of which shoulder dystocia occurred in one infant. Ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) procedure was performed in 13% (10/79). Postnatal treatment commonly involved surgical excision 38% (30/79), sclerotherapy in 21.5% (17/79), or combination of both in 11.4% (9/79). Of those with reported follow-up, 4 died within 1 year, 1 developed heart failure at 2 years of life, and the remaining 44 had normal developmental outcomes. CONCLUSION Fetal cystic LMs, excluding those in the posterior neck, are not commonly associated with chromosomal, or additional structural abnormalities. They usually increase in size before delivery with only a minority developing complications. The good developmental outcome was reported in all survivors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe and categorize splenic cystic-appearing lesions (S-CAL) with B-mode and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study investigated S-CALs in 111 patients between 2003 and 2023 in an interdisciplinary ultrasound center with B-mode ultrasound, color Doppler sonography (CDS), and CEUS. S-CAL was characterized by echogenicity, diameter, and shape, as well as additional features like septation, calcification, or wall thickening, and CDS/CEUS were used to identify perfusion. Histological examination or imaging follow-up was necessary to determine the nature of S-CAL. Moreover, 'S-CAL with risk' was defined, necessitating further procedures. Four types (0-III) of S-CALs were defined based on ultrasound parameters. Fisher's exact test was used to compare non-parametric data. RESULTS S-CAL of 111 patients (58 female, 53 men-average age: 58.6 years) was examined. Final diagnoses were: splenic cyst (n = 64, 57.7%); splenic abscess (n = 10, 9.0%); intrasplenic pseudoaneurysm (n = 10, 9.0%); splenic metastasis (n = 10, 9.0%); splenic infarction (n = 6, 5.4%); splenic hematoma (n = 4, 3.6%); other (n = 7, 6.3%). S-CAL groupings were type 0 (n = 11, 9.9%), type I (n = 33, 29.7%), type II (n = 24, 21.6%), and type III (n = 43, 38.7%). 'S-CAL with risk' was diagnosed in n = 41 (36.9%). Malignant S-CAL was only seen in type II (n = 2, 8.2%) and type III (n = 9, 20.9%) (p < 0.001). 'S-CALs with risk' were found more frequently in type 0 (n = 11, 100%), type II (n = 16, 66.7%) and type III (n = 13, 30.2%) than in type I (n = 1, 3%) (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION B-mode ultrasound, CDS, and CEUS are useful to further characterize and follow-up S-CAL and identify 'S-CAL with risk', requiring further procedures. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT Ultrasound imaging is valuable for the detection, categorization, and monitoring of cystic-appearing lesions of the spleen, as well as for the identification of those with risk. KEY POINTS An S-CAL may introduce uncertainty in clinical practice as imaging-based risk stratification is missing. B-mode and CEUS, along with the clinical context and follow-up, assist in characterizing and identifying 'S-CAL with risk'. S-CALs encompass various lesions, including simple cysts, metastases, abscesses, and intrasplenic pseudoaneurysms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a systemic disease more than a disease localized to the eye, and there may be vascular involvement in its pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) of patients with CSC, to compare it with that of healthy individuals, and to explore whether there might be an association between CSC and subclinical carotid atherosclerotic disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Adult patients with CSC (n = 30) and healthy individuals (n = 30) were included in this prospective study. All participants underwent complete ophthalmologic imaging and were then referred to the radiology department. Carotid IMT measurements were performed using ultrasound imaging. Measurements of the two groups were obtained and compared. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between patients with CSC and the control group with respect to age, gender, and smoking habits. The mean (±standard deviation, SD) carotid IMT values obtained by ultrasound measurements for the right and left sides in the patient group were 0.71 mm (± 0.19) and 0.71 mm (± 0.21), respectively. The mean (±SD) carotid IMT values for the right and left sides in the control group were 0.61 mm (± 0.15) and 0.60 mm (± 0.15), respectively. The mean carotid IMT values in the patient group were significantly higher than those in the control group for the right and left sides (p = 0.02 and p = 0.03, respectively). CONCLUSION Carotid IMT is increased in patients with CSC compared to healthy individuals. This outcome might reinforce the benefit of carotid artery screening following diagnosis of CSC by ophthalmologists for early detection of subclinical carotid atherosclerotic disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to develop an ultrasound-guided high-intensity-focused ultrasound (USgHIFU) probe for arterial sonication and to evaluate vascular contraction. METHODS The USgHIFU probe comprised two confocal spherical transducers for sonication and a US color Doppler flow imaging probe for guidance. A vessel-mimicking phantom was sonicated in two directions. In the vascular radial direction, an isolated rabbit aorta embedded in ex vivo pork liver was sonicated at different acoustic powers (245 and 519 W), flow rates (25, 30, and 50 mL/minute), and sonication energies (519, 980, and 1038 J). Changes in the postsonication vessels were evaluated using US imaging, microscopic observation, and histopathological analysis. RESULTS Beam focusing along the vascular radial direction caused significant deformation of both tube walls (n = 4), whereas focusing along the axial direction only affected the contraction of the anterior wall (n = 4). The contraction index (Dc) of the vessel sonicated at 245 W and 980 J was 56.2 ± 9.7% (n = 12) with 25 mL/minute. The Dc of the vessel sonicated at 519 W and 1038 J was 56.5 ± 7.8% (n = 17). The Dc of the vessel sonicated at 519 J total energy was 18.3 ± 5.1% (n = 12). CONCLUSION The developed USgHIFU probe induced greater vascular contractions by covering a larger area of the vessel wall in the radial direction. Sonication energy affects vascular contraction through temperature elevation of the vessel wall. When the acoustic power was high, an increase in acoustic power, even with comparable sonication energy, did not result in greater vessel contraction.
