Abstract
This minireview underscores the chemistry of 21-carbaporphyrins containing a plain cyclopentadiene moiety. Thus the cyclopentadiene incorporation afforded two 21-carbaporphyrin series represented by meso-tetraaryl-21-carbaporphyrin and [Formula: see text]-alkylated 21-carbaporphyrin with their properties evidently controlled by the nature of perimeter substitution. The synthetic strategy, physicochemical characterization and some insight in coordination properties of 21-carbaporphyrins have been illustrated. The formation of palladium(II), rhodium(III) and gold(III) meso-tetraaryl-21-carbaporphyrins via unprecedented intramolecular contractions of meta-benzi- or para-benziporphyrins has been also addressed.

Abstract
Syntheses of DTT fused 30[Formula: see text] heptaphyrin and 34[Formula: see text] octaphyrins are reported. The inclusion of fused group in the precursor itself allowed easy syntheses of these macrocycles. Fusion makes the macrocycles planar thus allowing strong [Formula: see text] electronic conjugation. Both 30[Formula: see text] heptaphyrin and 34[Formula: see text] octaphyrins are aromatic in freebase and protonated forms as revealed by large [Formula: see text] values in 1H NMR spectrum and sharp-intense Soret like bands in UV-vis spectrum. Interestingly one of the DTT ring undergoes fliping upon protonation in 34[Formula: see text] doubly fused octaphyrin. Such a large ring fliping is unprecedented in the literature. Single crystal X-ray analysis confirms planar nature of 34[Formula: see text] octaphyrins. Furthermore, the structure reveals two type of hydrogen bonding interactions: (a) CH[Formula: see text] (thiophene) and (b) CH[Formula: see text] (mesityl) leading to self assambled dimer separated by a distance of ∼3.0Å.

Abstract
An o-p-biphenyl moiety-incorporated 32π hexaphyrin(3.1.1.3.1.1) is successfully achieved. Replacing ortho with meta connectivity in the biphenyl unit of hexaphyrin leads to the formation of its structural isomer, octaphyrin(1.1.1.0.1.1.1.0). Spectral and structural analyses reveal the lack of planarity in hexaphyrin and the presence of an m-arene unit in octaphyrin, thus affording nonaromatic characteristics.

Abstract
Oxidative ring closure of linear oligopyrroles is one of the synthetic approaches to novel porphyrinoids with dinuclear coordination sites and helical chirality. The spatial arrangement of the pyrrolic groups of octapyrrole (P8) affected the position of the intramolecular oxidative coupling of the pyrrolic units; tripyrrin-armed isosmaragdyrin analogue (1) containing a β,β-linked bipyrrole moiety was synthesized regioselectively in a high yield by using FeCl3. NiII-coordination at the armed tripyrrin site of 1 allowed the formation of diastereomeric helical twisted complexes (2A and 2B) and succeeding CuII-coordination at the macrocyclic core afforded heterodinuclear NiII/CuII-complexes (3A and 3B). Each of them comprised a pair of separable enantiomers, exhibiting P- and M-helices, respectively. Notably, diastereomeric interconversion from 2A to 2B was quantitatively achieved as a consequence of helical transformation under acidic conditions.

Abstract
Porphyrins are fascinating molecules with applications spanning various scientific fields. In this review we present the use of periodic density functional theory (PDFT) calculations to study the structure, electronic properties, and reactivity of porphyrins on ordered two dimensional surfaces and in the formation of nanostructures. The focus of the review is to describe the application of PDFT calculations for bridging the gaps in experimental studies on porphyrin nanostructures and self-assembly on 2D surfaces. A survey of different DFT functionals used to study the porphyrin-based system as well as their advantages and disadvantages in studying these systems is presented.

Abstract
An [18]thiaporphyrin[36]dithiaoctaphyrin-[18]thiaporphyrin tricyclic macrocycle, fused through the 2,5-thienylene bridging moiety, was isolated during the preparation of 2,5-thienylene-strapped [26]hexaphyrin containing o-dichlorophenyl groups as meso substituents. The spectroscopic data of the 2,5-thienylene-strapped [26]hexaphyrin verified contributions of aromaticity from ring currents of both the [18]thiaporphyrin and the [26]hexaphyrin. The crystal structure of the tricyclic macrocycle revealed a distorted [36]dithiaoctaphyrin central core with two [18]thiaporphyrin sidewheels oriented nearly perpendicular to the mean-plane of dithiaoctaphyrin, implying the existence of independent π-conjugated systems. Both the absorption maximum at 441 nm and the chemical shifts in the 1 H NMR spectrum of the tricyclic macrocycle are dominated by diatropic ring currents of two aromatic [18]thiaporphyrin sidewheels.

Abstract
In light of increasing interest in the development of organic-organic multicomponent heterostructures on metals, this molecular-scale study investigates prototypical composite systems of ultrathin porphyrin and ionic liquid (IL) films on metallic supports under well-defined ultrahigh vacuum conditions. By means of angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we investigated the adsorption, stability, and thermal exchange of the resulting films after sequential physical vapor deposition of the free-base porphyrin 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin, 2H-TPP, and the IL 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [C8C1Im][PF6], on Ag(111) and Au(111). 2H-TPP shows two-dimensional growth of up to two closed molecular layers on Ag(111) and Au(111) and three-dimensional island growth for thicker films. IL films on top of a monolayer of 2H-TPP exhibit Stranski-Krastanov-like growth and are stable up to 385 K. The 2H-TPP layer leads to destabilization of the IL films, compared to the IL in direct contact with the bare metals, by inhibiting the specific adsorption of the ions on the metal surfaces. When the porphyrin is deposited on top of [C8C1Im][PF6] at low temperature, the 2H-TPP molecules adsorb on top of the IL film at first but replace the IL at the IL/metal interfaces upon heating above 240 K. This exchange process is most likely driven by the higher adsorption energy of 2H-TPP on Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces, as compared to the IL. The behavior observed on Ag(111) and Au(111) is identical. The results are highly relevant for the stability of porphyrin/IL-based thin film catalyst systems and molecular devices, and more generally, stacked organic multilayer architectures.

Abstract
We report expanded porphyrins with pyridine rings and two neighboring carbonyl groups, which allow NiII ions to coordinate to the tripyrrinone-type NNNO coordination structure with Ni-O bonds. The selectivity of tripyrrinone is superior to other pyrrolic or pyridinic cavities of expanded porphyrins. Introduction of α-carbonyl pyridine next to the tripyrrolic conjugated structure is a powerful strategy for regioselective metalation of flexible expanded porphyrinoids.

Abstract
Anfinsen's dogma that sequence dictates structure is fundamental to understanding the activity and assembly of proteins. This idea has been applied to all manner of oligomers but not to the behavior of cyclic oligomers, aka macrocycles. We do this here by providing the first proofs that sequence controls the hierarchical assembly of nonbiological macrocycles, in this case, at graphite surfaces. To design macrocycles with one (AAA), two (AAB), or three (ABC) different carbazole units, we needed to subvert the synthetic preferences for one-pot macrocyclizations. We developed a new stepwise synthesis with sequence-defined targets made in 11, 17, and 22 steps with 25, 10, and 5% yields, respectively. The linear build up of primary sequence (1°) also enabled a thermal Huisgen cycloaddition to proceed regioselectively for the first time using geometric control. The resulting macrocycles are planar (2° structure) and form H-bonded dimers (3°) at surfaces. Primary sequences encoded into the suite of tricarb macrocycles were shown by scanning-tunneling microscopy (STM) to impact the next levels of supramolecular ordering (4°) and 2D crystalline polymorphs (5°) at solution-graphite interfaces. STM imaging of an AAB macrocycle revealed the formation of a new gap phase that was inaccessible using only C3-symmetric macrocycles. STM imaging of two additional sequence-controlled macrocycles (AAD, ABE) allowed us to identify the factors driving the formation of this new polymorph. This demonstration of how sequence controls the hierarchical patterning of macrocycles raises the importance of stepwise syntheses relative to one-pot macrocyclizations to offer new approaches for greater understanding and control of hierarchical assembly.

Abstract
Phthalocyanines possess unique optical and electronic properties and thus are widely used in (opto)electronic devices, coatings, photodynamic therapy, etc. Extension of their π-electron systems could produce molecular materials with red-shifted absorption for a broader range of applications. However, access to expanded phthalocyanine analogues with more than four isoindoline units is challenging due to the limited synthetic possibilities. Here, we report the controlled on-surface synthesis of a gadolinium-supernaphthalocyanine macrocycle and its open-chain counterpart poly(benzodiiminoisoindoline) on a silver surface from a naphthalene dicarbonitrile precursor. Their formation is controlled by the on-surface high-dilution principle and steered by different metal templates, i.e., gadolinium atoms and the bare silver surface, which also act as oligomerization catalysts. By using scanning tunneling microscopy, photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, the chemical structures along with the mechanical and electronic properties of these phthalocyanine analogues with extended π-conjugation are investigated in detail. Extending the π‐conjugation of phthalocyanine dyes, while synthetically challenging, has the potential to produce desirable new molecular materials. Here, the authors use a templated on‐surface approach to synthesize several extended phthalocyanine derivatives from the same building block, including a lanthanide superphthalocyanine and an open‐chain polycyanine.

Abstract
Doping, through oxidation or reduction, is often used to modify the properties of π-conjugated oligomers. In most cases, the resulting charge distribution is difficult to determine. If the oligomer is cyclic and doping establishes global aromaticity or antiaromaticity, then it is certain that the charge is fully delocalized over the entire perimeter of the ring. Herein we show that reduction of a six-porphyrin nanoring using decamethylcobaltocene results in global aromaticity (in the 6- state; [90 π]) and antiaromaticity (in the 4- state; [88 π]), consistent with the Hückel rules. Aromaticity is assigned by NMR spectroscopy and density-functional theory calculations.

Abstract
Three distinct conformational structures of carbaoctaphyrins were prepared by incorporating bis-4,4'-biphenyl units in the macrocyclic core. The free-base form adopts a figure-eight conformation, whereas the protonation triggers a conformational change with a pyrrole ring inversion and acquires an open-framework structure. The insertion of bis-RhI metal ion in the macrocyclic core affords a singly twisted conformational structure. Furthermore, the local aromaticity in the bis-4,4'-biphenyl ring dominates the overall macrocyclic aromaticity in all three forms, and thus adopts nonaromatic characteristics. These results are supported by spectral as well as theoretical studies, and they are unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystal analyses.

Abstract
Vinylene-bridged hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) was synthesized from dipyrrolyl diphenylethenes by acid-catalyzed condensation reactions. Freebase hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) forms a distorted structure with non-aromatic characteristics. The aromaticity and molecular configuration of non-planar hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) can be controlled by insertion of metal ions. Freebase and zinc complexes show a distorted structure without macrocyclic aromaticity, whereas copper complexes show a figure-of-eight structure with macrocyclic aromaticity. It is the first example of aromaticity conversion of a distorted expanded porphyrin involving vinylene bridges.

Abstract
As the first example of expanded heteroporphyrins with heteroatoms at meso-positions, 5,20-dithiahexaphyrins and 5,20-diazahexaphyrins were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions of α,α'-dibromotripyrrin as the key step. While 5,20-dithiahexaphyrins are practically nonaromatic, 5,20-[28]diazahexaphyrins show weakly antiaromatic characters and can be cleanly converted into aromatic 5,20-[26]diazahexaphyrins upon oxidation with PbO2, demonstrating distinct aromaticity switching with maintenance of dumbbell-like conformations.

Abstract
Lithium-collaborating organic batteries (Li-[28]hexs) were investigated with [28]hexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1) as an active electrode material. Each hexaphyrin of [28]Hex cathode ideally involved four electrons per unit cycle and performed a typical charge/discharge processes of Li-organic battery. Li-[28]Hex batteries set with fast charging rates showed reasonably stable charge and discharge performances over 200 cycles even though it caused incomplete (2~3 electrons) charge/discharge cycles due to failing the complete charging process. UV absorption changes of [28]hexaphyrin in CH2Cl2 were supplementary for the electrochemical oxidation, which performed a conversion from [28]hexaphyrin to [26]hexaphyrin.

Abstract
A new mixed hexaphyrin, pyrihexaphyrin (0.1.0.0.1.0) (1), was prepared via an acid catalyzed cyclization between 5,5′-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde) (2) and terpyrrole (3).
A new mixed hexaphyrin, pyrihexaphyrin (0.1.0.0.1.0) (1), was prepared via an acid catalyzed cyclization between 5,5′-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde) (2) and terpyrrole (3). This expanded porphyrin undergoes a ring contraction upon metallation with uranyl silylamide [UO2[N(SiMe3)2]2] under anaerobic conditions followed by purification over basic aluminum oxide exposed to air. The uranyl-contracted pyrihexaphyrin (0.0.0.0.1.0) complex (4) produced as a result contains a unique structural architecture and possesses a formally 22 π-electron globally aromatic periphery, as inferred from NMR spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and computational analyses. Support for the proposed contraction mechanism came from experimental data and DFT calculations. Proton NMR and mass spectroscopic analysis provided the first insight into expanded porphyrin-mediated activation of the uranyl dication (UO22+).

Abstract
Condensation of pyrrole with various aldehydes in the presence of BF3•etherate as an acid catalyst in water provides good yield of some dipyrromethanes. Prolongation of the reaction time with aldehydes substituted by electron-donating (mesityl) or electron-withdrawing (2,6-dichlorophenyl) groups on the ortho positions of the phenyl did not lead to decomposition or scrambling. Manganese trans disubstituted porphyrin complexes which derive from various dipyrromethanes and manganese tetraaryl porphyrin complexes including various substituents with different steric and electronic properties show good catalytic activity in epoxidation of alkenes by NaIO4in the presence of imidazole (ImH). The study of steric and electronic effects of the catalysts on the epoxidation of olefins shows that Mn-porphyrin complexes with more bulky and electron-releasing groups on meso phenyls could increase the epoxidation yield of most alkenes.

Abstract
Porphyrins are tetrapyrrolic aromatic macrocycles and ubiquitous in nature. They are excellent dyes with strong absorption in the visible region (400–700 nm) and they exhibit decent fluorescence in the red region (620–900 nm). Carbazole is a nitrogen-containing electron rich aromatic heterocycle which can be linked to porphyrins and other chromophores. This review provides an overview of the different synthetic strategies that have been employed to prepare carbazole-substituted porphyrins and carbazole-fused porphyrinoids and similar systems. It also shows that how the substitution of carbazole occurs on the porphyrin core can alter its optical and electronic features. Introduction of carbazole moieties in the porphyrin ring resulted in fused porphyrinoids with changed aromaticity and significantly altered electronic features of the molecules.

Abstract
Two hitherto unknown conformationally rigid Hückel aromatic ethynylene-cumulene conjugated [30] heteroannulenes have been synthesized and characterized. A thorough solution-state spectroscopic characterization, combined with in-depth theoretical calculations, has been performed to arrive at the proposed geometry of the macrocycles. The most stable optimized structures for the free base form of both the macrocycles showed absolute planar geometries without any ring inversion with mean plane deviation (MPD) values of 0.00 and 0.00 Å, respectively, in accordance with the NMR spectroscopic observations. The induced correspondence of rigid ethynylene-cumulene moieties leading to near-infrared (NIR) absorption in neutral and protonated forms of macrocycles is the important highlight of this article. This noteworthy finding has been supported by DFT-level theoretical calculations. There is an increasing pursuit in designing such NIR-absorbing/-emitting systems due to their immense applications in medicine and biology for recognizing and transportation of various substrates. The geometry of the novel 30π aromatic heteroannulenes shows promise for evolution of such novel systems in near future.

Abstract
A new rectangular-shaped carbadecaphyrin was successfully synthesized by introducing a terphenylene unit ( m- m- m) in the macrocyclic core. The terphenylene moiety offers an open framework with multiple binding pockets to stabilize two Rh(I) ions in the core. The photophysical and structural studies reveal the non-aromatic character of the ligand and its bis-Rh(I) complex.

Abstract
5,20-Bis(ethoxycarbonyl)-[28]hexaphyrin was synthesized by acid catalyzed cross-condensation of meso-diaryl-substituted tripyrrane and ethyl 2-oxoacetate followed by subsequent oxidation. This hexaphyrin was found to be a stable 28π-antiaromatic compound with a dumbbell-like conformation. Upon oxidization with PbO2 , this [28]hexaphyrin was converted into an aromatic [26]hexaphyrin with a rectangular shape bearing two ester groups at the edge side. The [28]hexaphyrin can incorporate two NiII or CuII metals by using the ester carbonyl groups and three pyrrolic nitrogen atoms to give bis-NiII and bis-CuII complexes with essentially the same dumbbell-like structure. The antiaromatic properties of the [28]hexaphyrin and its metal complexes have been well characterized.

Abstract
Cationic tin(IV) porphyrins with tetracarbonyl cobaltates were synthesized, exhibiting bifunctional catalytic reactivity. The Lewis acidic tin-porphyrin center activated epoxides; concurrently, cobalt carbonyl anions efficiently opened epoxides and delivered carbonyl moieties. Thus, a series of β-lactones with a high synthetic value were obtained. This catalytic system showed excellent efficiency exceeding a turnover number of one thousand with a broad substrate scope. In addition, the presented tin porphyrin-based catalyst exhibited exclusive chemoselectivity to terminal epoxides over internal ones. The selective carbonylation of di-epoxides demonstrated the usefulness of these catalysts in the synthesis of complex molecular structures.

Abstract
A hybrid thia-norhexaphyrin comprising a directly linked N-confused pyrrole and thiophene unit (1) revealed unique macrocycle transformations to afford multiply inner-annulated aromatic macrocycles. Oxidation with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone triggered a cleavage of the C-S bond of the thiophene unit, accompanied with skeletal rearrangement to afford unique π-conjugated products: a thiopyrrolo-pentaphyrin embedded with a pyrrolo[1,2]isothiazole (2), a sulfur-free pentaphyrin incorporating an indolizine moiety (3), and a thiopyranyltriphyrinoid containing a 2H-thiopyran unit (4). Furthermore, 2 underwent desulfurization reactions to afford a fused pentaphyrin containing a pyrrolizine moiety (5) under mild conditions. Using expanded porphyrin scaffolds, oxidative thiophene cleavage and desulfurization of the hitherto unknown N-confused core-modified macrocycles would be a practical approach for developing unique polypyrrolic aromatic macrocycles.

Abstract
Stable homocarbaporphyrinoids were successfully synthesized by incorporating the m-o-m and p-o-p terphenyl units into the porphyrin core. The distinct bonding modes of terphenyl in the macrocycle generated two structural isomers with two and four carbon atoms in the macrocyclic environment. The core was utilized to stabilize the RhI ion. The spectral and structural analyses revealed that the restricted (m-o-m) and allowed (p-o-p) conjugation in the macrocyclic core provide overall non-aromatic characteristics both to the free bases and their complexes.
