Abstract
Deazaflavins are well suited for reductive chemistry acting via a consecutive photo-induced electron transfer, in which their triplet state and semiquinone - the latter is formed from the former after electron transfer from a sacrificial electron donor - are key intermediates. Guided by mechanistic investigations aiming to increase intersystem crossing by the internal heavy atom effect and optimising the concentration conditions to avoid unproductive excited singlet reactions, we synthesised 5-aryldeazaflavins with Br or Cl substituents on different structural positions via a three-component reaction. Bromination of the deazaisoalloxazine core leads to almost 100 % triplet yield but causes photo-instability and enhances unproductive side reactions. Bromine on the 5-phenyl group in ortho position does not affect the photostability, increases the triplet yield, and allows its efficient usage in the photocatalytic dehalogenation of bromo- and chloroarenes with electron-donating methoxy and alkyl groups even under aerobic conditions. Reductive powers comparable to lithium are achieved.

Abstract
The exploration of 1,2-radical shift (RS) mechanisms in photoinduced organic reactions has provided efficient routes for the generation of important radical synthons in many chemical transformations. In this Review, the basic concepts involved in the traditional 1,2-spin-center shift (SCS) mechanisms in recently reported studies are discussed. In addition, other useful 1,2-RSs are addressed, such as those proceeding through 1,2-group migrations in carbohydrate chemistry, via 1,2-boron shifts, and by the generation of α-amino radicals. The discussion begins with a general overview of the basic aspects of 1,2-RS mechanisms, followed by a demonstration of their applicability in photoinduced transformations. The sections that follow are organized according to the mechanisms operating in combination with the 1,2-radical migration event. This contribution is not a comprehensive review but rather aims to provide an understanding of the topic, focused on the more recent advances in the field, and establishes a definition for the nomenclature that has been used to describe such mechanisms.

Abstract
![]()
The Ni/Ir-photocatalyzed coupling of an aryl bromide
(ArBr) with
an alkyl bromide (RBr) has been analyzed using in situ LED-19F NMR spectroscopy. Four components (light, [ArBr],
[Ni], [Ir]) are found to control the rate of ArBr consumption, but
not the product selectivity, while two components ([(TMS)3SiH], [RBr]) independently control the product selectivity, but not
the rate. A major resting state of nickel has been identified as ArNiII(L)Br, and 13C-isotopic entrainment is used to
show that the complex undergoes Ir-photocatalyzed conversion to products
(Ar-R, Ar-H, Ar-solvent) in competition with the release of ArBr.
A range of competing absorption and quenching effects lead to complex
correlations between the Ir and Ni catalyst loadings and the reaction
rate. Differences in the Ir/Ni Beer–Lambert absorption profiles
allow the rate to be increased by the use of a shorter-wavelength
light source without compromising the selectivity. A minimal kinetic
model for the process allows simulation of the reaction and provides
insights for optimization of these processes in the laboratory.

Abstract
An efficient and inexpensive protocol for the direct decarboxylative fluorination of aliphatic carboxylic acids catalyzed with iron salts under visible light is presented. This new method allows the facile fluorination of a diverse array of carboxylic acids even on gram scale using a Schlenk flask without loss of efficiency. Mechanistic studies suggest that the photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer process enables the generation of the key step to generate the carboxyl radical intermediates.

Abstract
The synthesis of (E)-diphenyl(aryldiazenyl)phosphine oxides and dialkyl (E)-(aryldiazenyl)phosphonates via visible light-mediated N-P bond formation between diazo species and phosphine oxides and phosphite derivatives, respectively, is described. The diazo species were generated via the reaction of aniline with isoamyl nitrite, which upon reaction with phosphorus surrogates generated arylazophosphine oxides and arylazo phosphonates in good to excellent yields. This sustainable chemical process offers a broad substrate scope and reasonably viable product formation.

Abstract
Carbazolyl dicyanobenzene (CDCB) derivates exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) have shown themselves to be excellent photocatalysts over recent years, particularly 4CzIPN, although investigation into organic TADF compounds as photocatalysts outside of the CDCB group has been limited. Herein, we report an alternative donor-acceptor TADF structure, 9,9'-(sulfonylbis(pyrimidine-5,2-diyl))bis(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazole), pDTCz-DPmS, for use as a photocatalyst (PC). A comparison of the electrochemical and photophysical properties of pDTCz-DPmS with 4CzIPN in a range of solvents identifies the former as a better ground state reducing agent and photoreductant, while both exhibit similar oxidation capabilities in the ground and excited state. The increased conjugation of pDTCz-DPmS relative to 4CzIPN presents a more intense CT band in the UV-vis absorption spectrum, aiding in the light absorption of this molecule. Prompt and delayed emission lifetimes are observed for pDTCz-DPmS, confirming the TADF nature, both of which are sufficiently long-lived to participate in productive photochemistry. These combined properties make pDTCz-DPmS useful in photocatalysis reactions, covering a range of photoredox oxidative and reductive quenching reactions, as well as those involving a dual Ni(II) cocatalyst, alongside energy transfer processes. The higher triplet energy and increased photostability of pDTCz-DPmS compared with 4CzIPN were found to be advantages of this organic PC.

Abstract
Light-driven homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis require a complex interplay between light absorption, charge separation, charge transfer, and catalytic turnover. Optical and irradiation parameters as well as reaction engineering aspects play major roles in controlling catalytic performance. This multitude of factors makes it difficult to objectively compare light-driven catalysts and provide an unbiased performance assessment. This Scientific Perspective highlights the importance of collecting and reporting experimental data in homogeneous and heterogeneous light-driven catalysis. A critical analysis of the benefits and limitations of the commonly used experimental indicators is provided. Data collection and reporting according to FAIR principles is discussed in the context of future automated data analysis. The authors propose a minimum dataset as a basis for unified collecting and reporting of experimental data in homogeneous and heterogeneous light-driven catalysis. The community is encouraged to support the future development of this parameter list through an open online repository.

Abstract
The search for building hierarchical porous materials with accelerated photo-induced electrons and charge-carrier separation is important because they hold great promise for applications in various fields. Here, a facile strategy of confining metal-organic framework (MOF) in the 1D channel of the 2D covalent organic framework (COF) to construct a novel COF@MOF micro/nanopore network is proposed. Specifically, a nitrogen-riched COF (TTA-BPDA-COF) is chosen as the platform for in-situ growth of a Co-based MOF (ZIF-L-Co) to form a TTA-BPDA-COF@ZIF-L-Co hybrid material. The hierarchical porous structure endows TTA-BPDA-COF@ZIF-L-Co with superior adsorption capacity. In addition, the integration of TTA-BPDA-COF and ZIF-L-Co forms a Z-scheme photocatalytic system, which significantly improved the redox properties and accelerated the separation of photogenerated charges and holes, achieving great improvement in photocatalytic activity. This confinement engineering strategy provides a new idea to construct a versatile molecular-material photocatalytic platform.

Abstract
Reactions of acceptor-substituted aryl iodides and bromides with potassium thiocarboxylates under white light irradiation allow for the preparation of S-aryl thioesters including synthetically versatile S-aryl thioacetates. This transition-metal and external photocatalyst-free method features extremely mild reaction conditions compared with those used in transition-metal-catalyzed protocols. Reactions proceed via the initial formation of an electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex in the ground state, which was supported by UV-vis spectra. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin-trapping experiments using phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN) have revealed the radical nature of the reaction.

Abstract
In this paper we tackle the challenge of gaining control of the photophysical properties of PAHs through a site-specific N-doping within the structural aromatic framework. By developing a simple predictive tool that identifies C(sp2)-positions that if substituted with a heteroatom would tailor the changes in the absorption and emission spectral envelopes, we predict optimal substitutional patterns for the model peri-xanthenoxanthene (PXX) PAH. Specifically, TDDFT calculations of the electron density difference between the S1 excited state and S0 ground state of PXX allowed us to identify the subtleties in the role of sites i.e., electron donating or withdrawing character on excitation. The replacement of two C(sp2)-atoms with two N-atoms, in either electron donating or withdrawing positions, shifts the electronic transitions either to low or high energy, respectively. This consequently shifts the PXX absorption spectral envelop bathochromically or hypsochromically, as demonstrated by steady-state absorption spectroscopic measurements. Within the series of synthesised N-doped PXX, we tune the optical band gap within an interval of ∼0.4 eV, in full agreement with the theoretical predictions. Relatedly, measurements show the more blueshifted the absorption/emission energies, the greater the fluorescence quantum yield value (from ∼45% to ∼75%). On the other hand, electrochemical investigations suggested that the N-pattern has a limited influence on the redox properties. Lastly, depending on the N-pattern, different supramolecular organisations could be obtained at the solid-state, with the 1,7-pattern PXX molecule forming multi-layered, graphene-like, supramolecular sheets through a combination of weak H-bonding and π-π stacking interactions. Supramolecular striped patterned sheets could also be formed with the 3,9- and 4,10-congeners when co-crystallized with a halogen-bond donor molecule.

Abstract
Reported herein is a rare example of asymmetric catalytic functionalisation of enals at the remote γ-position, proceeding via a radical path. The process requires visible light and exploits the synergistic actions of two distinct organocatalysts. A nucleophilic organic catalyst generates radicals upon SN2-based activation of commercially available alkyl halides and blue light irradiation. Concomitantly, a chiral secondary amine catalyst triggers the formation of a dienamine from α-branched enals. This chiral dienamine intercepts the photogenerated radicals with excellent γ-selectivity and good stereocontrol.

Abstract
Quinazoline compounds demonstrate a variety of physiological and pharmacological activities. However, the most common syntheses require large quantities of oxidants, high temperature, and other extreme conditions. In this study, quinazoline compounds were synthesized from the condensation of α-keto acid and 2-aminobenzylamine and then decarboxylation under blue LED irradiation at room temperature without transition metal catalysts or additives. Therefore, we demonstrated that by using α-keto acid as the acyl source, decarboxylation can be realized under blue LED without oxidants, in a simple, mild, and environmentally friendly process.

Abstract
In the past century, ferroelectrics are well known in electroceramics and microelectronics for their unique ferroelectric, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and photovoltaic effects. Nowadays, the advances in understanding and tuning of these properties have greatly promoted a broader application potential especially in energy and environmental fields, by harvesting solar, mechanical, and heat energies. For example, high piezoelectricity and high pyroelectricity can be designed by defect or microstructure engineering for piezo- and pyro-catalyst, respectively. Moreover, highly piezoelectric and broadband (UV-Vis-NIR) light-responsive ferroelectrics can be designed via defect engineering, giving rise to a new concept of photoferroelectrics for efficient photocatalysis, piezocatalysis, pyrocatalysis, and related cocatalysis. This article first summarizes the recent developments in ferroelectrics in terms of piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, and photovoltaic effects based on defect and microstructure engineering. Then, the potential applications in energy generation (i.e., photovoltaic effect, H2 generation, and self-powered multisource energy harvesting and signal sensing) and environmental protection (i.e., photo-piezo-pyro- cocatalytic dye degradation and CO2 reduction) are reviewed. Finally, the outlook and challenges are discussed. This article not only covers an overview of the state-of-art advances of ferroelectrics, but also prospects their applications in coping with energy crisis and environmental pollution.

Abstract
Photocatalytic technology has been widely studied by researchers in the field of environmental purification. This technology can not only completely convert organic pollutants into small molecules of CO2 and H2O through redox reactions but also remove metal ions and other inorganic substances from water. This article reviews the research progress of graphene-based photocatalytic nanocomposites in the treatment of wastewater. First, we elucidate the basic principles of photocatalysis, the types of graphene-based nanocomposites, and the role of graphene in photocatalysis (e.g., graphene can accelerate the separation of photon-hole pairs and increase the intensity and range of light absorption). Second, the preparation, characterization, and application of composites in wastewater are introduced. We also discuss the kinetic model of the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Finally, the enhancement mechanism of graphene in terms of photocatalysis is not completely clear, and graphene-based photocatalysts with high catalytic efficiency, low cost, and large-scale production have not yet appeared, so there is an urgent need for more extensive and in-depth research.

Abstract
The merging of photoredox and nickel catalysis has revolutionized the field of C-C cross-coupling. However, in comparison to the development of synthetic methods, detailed mechanistic investigations of these catalytic systems are lagging. To improve the mechanistic understanding, computational tools have emerged as powerful tools to elucidate the factors controlling reactivity and selectivity in these complex catalytic transformations. Based on the reported computational studies, it appears that the mechanistic picture of catalytic systems is not generally applicable, but is rather dependent on the specific choice of substrate, ligands, photocatalysts, etc. Given the complexity of these systems, the need for more accurate computational methods, readily available and user-friendly dynamics simulation tools, and data-driven approaches is clear in order to understand at the molecular level the mechanisms of these transformations. In particular, we anticipate that such improvement of theoretical methods will become crucial to advance the understanding of excited-state properties and dynamics of key species, as well as to enable faster and unbiased exploration of reaction pathways. Further, with greater collaboration between computational, experimental, and spectroscopic communities, the mechanistic investigation of photoredox/Ni dual-catalytic reactions is expected to thrive quickly, facilitating the design of novel catalytic systems and promoting our understanding of the reaction selectivity.

Abstract
Bi based catalysts have attracted continuous attention from the scientific community because of their excellent photochemical properties and wide application in photocatalytic treatment of environmental pollution. A series of Bi based catalysts with good crystallinity and high purity were prepared by calcination and hydrothermal synthesis. In the application of degrading formaldehyde aqueous solution in a mercury lamp and xenon lamp atmosphere, it was found that BiVO4 and Bi2WO6 showed excellent photochemical properties under ultraviolet and visible light. The tests of PL, UV-Vis and EIS confirmed their high activity. In the calculation based on density functional theory (DFT), through the analysis of the energy band structure, density of states (DOS) and partial wave density of states (PDOS), it is found that the d orbital of V and W elements has a great influence on the position and size of the energy band of the catalyst, which makes it have high activity and excellent electrochemical properties.

Abstract
DNA‐encoded library (DEL) technology has become widely used in drug discovery research. The construction of DELs requires robust organic transformations that proceed in aqueous media under mild conditions. Unfortunately, the application of water as reaction medium for organic synthesis is not evident due to the generally limited solubility of organic reagents. However, the use of surfactants can offer a solution to this issue. Oil‐in‐water microemulsions formed by surfactant micelles are able to localize hydrophobic reagents inside them, resulting in high local concentrations of the organic substances in an otherwise poorly solvated environment. This review provides a conceptual and critical summary of micellar synthesis possibilities that are well suited to DEL synthesis. Existing examples of micellar DEL approaches, together with a selection of micellar organic transformations fundamentally suitable for DEL are discussed.

Abstract
Photocatalysis under UV/visible light irradiation has emerged as one of the green methodologies for solar energy utilization and organic synthesis. These photocatalytic processes are typically initiated by one-photon-absorbing metal complexes or organic dyes. Nevertheless, the intrinsic restrictions of UV/visible light irradiation, such as shallow penetration in reaction solutions, competing absorption by substrates, and limited coverage of the solar spectrum, call for the development of innovative photocatalysts functioning under longer wavelength irradiation. Herein, we report a ruthenium complex containing a metal-organic framework, MOF-Ru1, which can drive diverse organic reactions under 740 nm light irradiation following the two-photon absorption (TPA) process. Various organic transformations such as energy transfer, reductive, oxidative, and redox neutral reactions were realized using this heterogeneous hybrid photocatalyst. Overall, MOF-Ru1 represents an intriguing TPA photocatalyst active under near-infrared light irradiation, paving a way for the efficient utilization of low-energy light and convenient photocatalyst recycling because of phase separation. Ru complexes with π-conjugation ligands show two-photon absorption of NIR photons Hybrid MOF-Ru has NIR light-driven photocatalytic performance with recyclability A variety of organic reactions were photocatalyzed by MOF-Ru under 740 nm irradiation

Abstract
We report the preparation and the study of new types of neutral and cationic phosphorescent heteroleptic Ir(III) complexes derived from 6-phenylpurine nucleosides and nucleotides. Neutral complexes of general formula Ir(C^N)2(acac) 7, and 8a-c (HC^N = 9-substituted-6-phenyl purine) are orange-red emissive upon photoexcitation, with short lifetimes and good quantum yields (0.42-0.65) in both PMMA films and 2-MeTHF at room temperature. In turn, cationic complexes [Ir(C^N)2(dtb-bpy)][PF6] 9, 12a and 12c (dtb-bpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridine) are yellow-green emitters with moderate quantum yields (0.24-0.32).

Abstract
A visible-light-induced photocatalyst-free three-component radical cascade bicyclization has been achieved to obtain diverse difluoroamidosulfonylated dihydrobenzofurans in moderate to good yields. This protocol avoids potential toxicity and the tedious removal procedure for photocatalysts and also features mild reaction conditions and a good functional group tolerance. Moreover, mechanistic investigations reveal the formation of a charge-transfer complex and the involvement of an intramolecular 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer process in this transformation.

Abstract
A ring-opening/cyclization cascade reaction of α-brominated amide-tethered alkylidenecyclopropanes in the presence of photocatalyst 4CzIPN under visible-light irradiation was developed to afford polycyclic benzazepine derivatives in good yields with broad substrate scope and good functional tolerance. A plausible mechanism involving a halogen atom transfer (XAT) process and a radical chain process is proposed for this reaction. This study provides a concise and practical strategy for the synthesis of benzazepine derivatives.

Abstract
We describe an asymmetric organocatalytic method to synthesize 1,7-dicarbonyl compounds containing a β-stereocenter. The chemistry relies on the formation of γ-keto radicals, generated upon oxidative ring opening of cyclobutanols mastered by an organic photoredox catalyst. These nonstabilized primary radicals are stereoselectively intercepted by an iminium ion intermediate, formed upon activation of aliphatic and aromatic enals by a chiral secondary amine catalyst. This organocatalytic photoredox method served to prepare scaffolds found in natural products and drug molecules.
