Exploring Nature and Predicting Strength of Hydrogen Bonds: A Correlation Analysis Between Atoms-in-Molecules Descriptors, Binding Energies, and Energy Components of Symmetry-Adapted Perturbation Theory

The Role of the Transient Atropisomerism and Chirality of Flurbiprofen Unveiled by Laser-Ablation Rotational Spectroscopy

The combination of atropisomerism and chirality in flurbiprofen is shown to be relevant concerning its pharmacological activity. The two most stable conformers of a total of eight theoretically predicted for each R- or S- flurbiprofen enantiomers have been isolated in the cooling conditions of a supersonic jet and structurally characterized by laser ablation Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The detected conformers, whose structure is mainly defined by three dihedral angles, only differ in the sign of the phenyl torsion angle giving rise to S_a and R_a atropisomers. A comparison with the structures available for the R- and S- enantiomers complexed to COX isoforms reveals that the enzymes select only the S_a atropisomers, resulting in a diastereoisomer-specific recognition. The most stable gas phase conformer is exclusively selected when using the S- enantiomer while the second is recognized only for the R- enantiomer. These experimental results highlight the importance of atropisomerism in drug design.

Hydrogen Bond Networks Stabilized High-Capacity Organic Cathode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

High-capacity small organic materials are plagued by their high solubility. Here we proposed constructing hydrogen bond networks (HBN) via intermolecular hydrogen bonds to suppress the solubility of active material. The illustrated 2, 7- diamino-4, 5, 9, 10-tetraone (PTO-NH₂ ) molecule with intermolecular hydrogen (H) bond between O in -C=O and H in -NH₂ , which make PTO-NH₂ presents transverse two-dimensional extension and longitudinal π-π stacking structure. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) has tracked the reversible evolution of H-bonds, further confirming the existence of HBN structure can stabilize the intermediate 2-electron reaction state. Therefore, PTO-NH₂ with HBN structure has higher active site utilization (95 %), better cycle stability and rate performance. This study uncovers the H-bond effect and evolution during the electrochemical process and provides a strategy for materials design.

Dynamic Construction and Maintenance of Confined Nanoregions via Hydrogen-Bond Networks between Acetylene Reactants and a Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework

The nanoconfinement effect in catalysis has attracted much attention because it provides a novel means of regulating the molecular properties and related reactions. Confined nanoregions composed of both reactants and catalysts through weak interactions are expected to improve the catalytic performance and promote the mass transport of relevant molecules simultaneously. However, at reaction temperatures, the structural variation of such confined spaces constructed via weak interactions remains unclear. Herein, through density functional theory calculations combined with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we have systematically investigated the dynamic structural evolution of the confined space constructed by acetylene reactants and a polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework (POMOF) via hydrogen-bond networks. It is found that, at the reaction temperature of acetylene semihydrogenation, the hydrogen-bond networks and generated confined nanoregions are not rigid but are constantly changing and dynamically maintained. The steering role played by the O atoms at the surfaces of the polyoxometalate clusters is essential for generation of the hydrogen-bond networks and maintenance of the nanoregions. Upon confinement, the acetylene reactants can be better activated than those in an unconstrained atmosphere, which is reflected by the different dynamic distributions of the ∠CHC bending magnitude. Moreover, from a comparison of the distinct interaction characteristics between acetylene/ethylene and POMOF, the different manifestations in the adsorption energy variations of the confined molecules can be interpreted. This work helps to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of confined catalysis and may promote its application in practical catalytic processes.

Porous Organic Frameworks Constructed by the Synergetic Effect of Covalent Bonds and Hydrogen Bonds for the Selective Identification and Detection of Explosives

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have emerged as novel platforms for material design and functional explorations. Here, we report an unconventional structural organic framework (named CHOF-1) combined with 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) and 5-hydroxyisophthalaldehyde (HP) through the synergetic effect of covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds. CHOF-1 contains two different pores and is an eclipsed AA-stacking model with high thermal stability. It exhibits selective "turn-off" and red shift fluorescence responses toward 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) in ethanol, respectively, and the low detection limit was 8.78 μM for 4-NP and 11.1 μM for TNP. It has satisfactory recovery in the detection of 4-NP and TNP in practical water samples. The fluorescence quenching of CHOF-1 caused by 4-NP is attributed to the absorption competition quenching (ACQ) mechanism. In the structure of CHOF-1, the hydroxyl of TNP has strong acidity and can form strong hydrogen bonds with the unreacted NH2. Then, the crystalline structure of CHOF-1 decomposed and the electron structure of the photophore changed; thus, the fluorescence spectra red-shifted. This is a novel example of a covalent bond and hydrogen bonds combined organic framework (CHOF). This work not only demonstrates a synthesis strategy of the first novel structural organic framework through the synergetic effect of covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds but also provides a fluorescent sensing material for the detection of explosives 4-NP and TNP with high selectivity and sensitivity.

Stepwise hydrations of anhydride tuned by hydrogen bonds: rotational study on maleic anhydride-(H2O)1-3

The rotational spectra of maleic anhydride-(H₂O)_1-3 have been investigated for the first time by using pulsed jet Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy with complementary computational analyses. The experimental evidence points out that water tends to self-aggregate with hydrogen bonds and form homodromic cycles. Differences in bond lengths and charge distribution between the two carbonyl sites have been observed upon stepwise hydrations, which might further introduce a selectivity on the nucleophilic attack sites of hydrolysis. This study provides an important insight into the incipient solvation process (microsolvation) of maleic anhydride in water by understanding the cooperation and rearrangement of intermolecular hydrogen bonds in its stepwise hydrates.

Molecular Mechanism of Conformational Crossover of Mefenamic Acid Molecules in scCO2

In this work, we studied conformational equilibria of molecules of mefenamic acid in its diluted solution in scCO₂ under isochoric heating conditions in the temperature range of 140-210 °C along the isochore corresponding to the scCO₂ density of 1.1 of its critical value. This phase diagram range totally covers the region of conformational transitions of molecules of mefenamic acid in its saturated solution in scCO₂. We found that in the considered phase diagram region, the equilibrium of two conformers is realized in this solution. In the temperature range of 140-180 °C, conformer I related to the first, most stable polymorph of mefenamic acid prevails. In the temperature range of 200-210 °C, conformer II, which is related to the second metastable polymorph becomes dominant. Based on the results of quantum chemical calculations and experimental IR spectroscopy data on the mefenamic acid conformer populations, we classified this temperature-induced conformational crossover as an entropy-driven phenomenon.

Catalytic Enantioselective Allylboration and Related Reactions of Isatins Promoted by Chiral BINOLs: Scope and Mechanistic Studies

An improvement in the catalytic enantioselective allylboration of isatins with 2-allyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane in the presence of chiral BINOL derivatives is reported, offering an efficient one-step access to enantioenriched N-unprotected 3-allyl-3-hydroxy-2-oxindoles. This catalytic process is also effective for the crotylboration reaction with enantiomeric ratios (er) up to 97:3, as well as for the asymmetric synthesis of homopropargylic alcohols via an allenyl addition to indoline-2,3-diones. Origins of the high enantioselectivity in chiral BINOL-catalyzed allylboration of isatins were examined by DFT calculations. A hypothetical scenario suggested a crucial internal hydrogen bonding between the amide group (C═O···H-O) and the ethylene hydroxyl of the transient chiral mixed boronate ester, generating a rigid and stabilized system that favors the addition of the allylboron species to the Re face of the ketone function. The key role of the alcohol additive (t-BuOH or t-AmOH) in the enantioselective allylboration reaction of isatins has also been shown on the basis of a kinetics study and computational calculations by favoring the transesterification of the 2-allyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane with BINOL via proton transfer processes.

A DFT study of the endo-selectivity mechanism of the Diels-Alder reaction in lindenane dimeric sesquiterpene synthesis promoted by pyridines

The lindenane dimeric sesquiterpenoids with versatile biological activities are accessible via biometric synthesis, in which the endo-selective Diels-Alder reaction plays an important role. To explore the endo-selectivity of the Diels-Alder reaction between lindenane sesquiterpenes promoted by pyridines, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to explore the reaction mechanism between pyridines and D-A monomers. The calculations performed on the reaction pathways explain why pyridines can promote endo-selectivity via hydrogen bonding, and the hydrogen bond strength is a key factor driving the Diels-Alder reaction in major biochemical systems. These DFT-level insights will pave the way for designing better promoters for Diels-Alder reactions in biometric synthesis applications.

Chitosan-induced self-assembly of montmorillonite nanosheets along the end-face for methylene blue removal from water

In this study, chitosan-induced self-assembly of montmorillonite nanosheets (MMTNS) along the end-face to form the layered and porous structured composite with high adsorption capacity towards MB dye wastewater was investigated. The self-assembly process was driven by the hydrogen-bond interaction among -OH groups distributed along the end-face of MMTNS and -NH₂ groups on chitosan (CS) chain, which finally formed the infinite two-dimensional lamellae. This technology remained the exposed adsorption sites on MMTNS surface, and solved the separation issue of spent MMTNS from water, making MMTNS/CS an excellent adsorption material for macromolecular MB dye. The maximum adsorption capacity of MMTNS/CS towards MB reached 243 mg/g, which was achieved via the Na⁺- exchange, hydrogen-bond and n-π stacking interactions with MB molecules. This work aimed at breaking through the bottleneck of small adsorption capacity of traditional MMT adsorbents, solving the problem of solid-liquid separation of nanosheets, and effectively reducing the adsorption cost, which might guide an important direction for adsorption material design and development in the future.

Synthesis of Synthetic Musks: A Theoretical Study Based on the Relationships between Structure and Properties at Molecular Scale

Synthetic musks (SMs), as an indispensable odor additive, are widely used in various personal care products. However, due to their physico-chemical properties, SMs were detected in various environmental media, even in samples from arctic regions, leading to severe threats to human health (e.g., abortion risk). Environmentally friendly and functionally improved SMs have been theoretically designed in previous studies. However, the synthesizability of these derivatives has barely been proven. Thus, this study developed a method to verify the synthesizability of previously designed SM derivatives using machine learning, 2D-QSAR, 3D-QSAR, and high-throughput density functional theory in order to screen for synthesizable, high-performance (odor sensitivity), and environmentally friendly SM derivatives. In this study, three SM derivatives (i.e., D52, D37, and D25) were screened and recommended due to their good performances (i.e., high synthesizability and odor sensitivity; low abortion risk; and bioaccumulation ability in skin keratin). In addition, the synthesizability mechanism of SM derivatives was also analyzed. Results revealed that high intramolecular hydrogen bond strength, electrostatic interaction, qH⁺ value, energy gap, and low E_HOMO would lead to a higher synthesizability of SMs and their derivatives. This study broke the synthesizability bottleneck of theoretically designed environment-friendly SM derivatives and advanced the mechanism of screening functional derivatives.

Poly-L-aspartic acid based nonconventional luminescent biomacromolecules with efficient emission in dilute solutions for Al3+ detection

Nonconventional luminescent macromolecules exhibiting bright fluorescence or phosphorescence emission at high concentrations and solid-state have attracted significant attention due to their promising application in different fields. However, most reported nonconventional luminescent macromolecules show weak or no emission in dilute solutions, limiting their large-scale applications. Herein, nonconventional luminescent biomacromolecules with hydrophobic rigid chains, hydrophilic flexibility and inter- or intra-molecular hydrogen bonding interactions were proposed to achieve effective luminescence in dilute solutions. Poly-L-aspartic acid (PASA) with a fluorescence quantum yield of 4.6 % in a dilute solution (0.8 mg/mL) was synthesized to validate this design strategy. The fluorescence intensity of PASA solution increased with the increase of the concentration, demonstrating a clustering-triggered emission (CTE) effect. Furthermore, the fluorescence intensity significantly enhanced when adding Al³⁺ into PASA aqueous solution via the Al³⁺ recognition effect. The detection limits for Al³⁺ (1.71 × 10^-6 mol/L) meet the World Health Organization (WHO) requirements for food detection. At last, PASA solid-state samples exhibit room temperature phosphorescence emission.

Density Functional Study to Investigate the Ability of (ZnS)n (n = 1-12) Clusters Removing Hg0, HgCl, and HgCl2 via Electron Localization Function and Non-Covalent Interactions Analyses

In this study, the density functional theory is used to study the ability of (ZnS)_n clusters to remove Hg⁰, HgCl, and HgCl₂ and reveals that they can be absorbed on (ZnS)_n clusters. According to electron localization function (ELF) and non-covalent interactions (NCI) analyses, the adsorption of Hg⁰ on (ZnS)_n is physical adsorption and the adsorption ability of (ZnS)_n for removing Hg⁰ is weak. When (ZnS)_n adsorbs HgCl and HgCl₂, two new Hg-S and Zn-Cl bonds form in the resultant clusters. An ELF analysis identifies the formation of Hg-S and Zn-Cl bonds in (ZnS)_nHgCl and (ZnS)_nHgCl₂. A partial density of states and charge analysis confirm that as Hg⁰, HgCl, and HgCl₂ approach (ZnS)_n clusters, atomic orbitals in Hg and Zn, Hg and S, as well as Zn and Cl overlap and hybridize. Adsorption energies of HgCl and HgCl₂ on (ZnS)_n clusters are obviously bigger than those of Hg⁰, indicating that HgCl and HgCl₂ adsorption on (ZnS)_n clusters is much stronger than that of Hg⁰. By combining ELF analysis, NCI analysis, and adsorption energies, the adsorption of HgCl, and HgCl₂ on (ZnS)_n clusters can be classified as chemical adsorption. The adsorption ability of (ZnS)_n clusters for removing HgCl and HgCl₂ is higher than that of Hg⁰.

Revealing the incorporation of an NH2 group into the edge of carbon dots for H2O2 sensing via the C-N⋯H hydrogen bond interaction

We investigated hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) sensing on NH₂-functionalized carbon dots (Cdots) for three different -NH₂ positions, and the N atom was found to be the active site using a quantum computational approach. B3LYP and 6-31G(d,p) were used for density functional theory (DFT) ground state calculations, whereas CAM-B3LYP and the same basis set were used in time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) excited state calculations. Structural optimization showed that the H₂O₂ is chemisorbed on 1-sim via a C-N⋯H hydrogen bond interaction with an adsorption energy of -10.61 kcal mol^-1. Mulliken atomic charge distributions and electrostatic potential (ESP) analysis were both used to determine reactivity of the molecules at the atomic level. For in-depth analysis of the ground states, we utilized Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) theory, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and non-covalent interaction (NCI) index analysis. In addition, we also present UV-vis absorption spectra and charge transfer lengths to understand the mechanism of H₂O₂ sensing in excited states. Based on the molecular and electronic properties of the NH₂-Cdots, it was shown that 1-sim is a potential candidate for use as an electrochemical sensor for H₂O₂ sensing. Whereas 3-sim is believed to be a potential candidate for use as an optical sensor of H₂O₂ based on the UV-vis characteristics via photoinduced charge transfer.

Why much of Chemistry may be indisputably non-bonded?

In this compendium, the wide scope of all intermolecular interactions ever known has been revisited, in particular giving emphasis the capability of much of the elements of the periodic table to form non-covalent contacts. Either hydrogen bonds, dihydrogen bonds, halogen bonds, pnictogen bonds, chalcogen bonds, triel bonds, tetrel bonds, regium bonds, spodium bonds or even the aerogen bond interactions may be cited. Obviously that experimental techniques have been used in some works, but it was through the theoretical methods that these interactions were validate, wherein the QTAIM integrations and SAPT energy partitions have been useful in this regard. Therefore, the great goal concerns to elucidate the interaction strength and if the intermolecular system shall be total, partial or non-covalently bonded, wherein this last one encompasses the most majority of the intermolecular interactions what leading to affirm that chemistry is debatably non-bonded.

Properties of Gaseous Deprotonated L-Cysteine S-Sulfate Anion [cysS-SO3]-: Intramolecular H-Bond Network, Electron Affinity, Chemically Active Site, and Vibrational Fingerprints

L-cysteine S-sulfate, Cys-SSO₃H, and their derivatives play essential roles in biological chemistry and pharmaceutical synthesis, yet their intrinsic molecular properties have not been studied to date. In this contribution, the deprotonated anion [cysS-SO₃]^- was introduced in the gas phase by electrospray and characterized by size-selected, cryogenic, negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy. The electron affinity of the [cysS-SO₃]^• radical was determined to be 4.95 ± 0.10 eV. In combination with theoretical calculations, it was found that the most stable structure of [cysS-SO₃]^- (S₁) is stabilized via three intramolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs); i.e., one O-H⋯⋯N between the -COOH and -NH₂ groups, and two N-H⋯⋯O HBs between -NH₂ and -SO₃, in which the amino group serves as both HB acceptor and donor. In addition, a nearly iso-energetic conformer (S₂) with the formation of an O-H⋯⋯N-H⋯⋯O-S chain-type binding motif competes with S₁ in the source. The most reactive site of the molecule susceptible for electrophilic attacks is the linkage S atom. Theoretically predicted infrared spectra indicate that O-H and N-H stretching modes are the fingerprint region (2800 to 3600 cm^-1) to distinguish different isomers. The obtained information lays out a foundation to better understand the transformation and structure-reactivity correlation of Cys-SSO₃H in biologic settings.

Structural origins of two-dimensional elastic bending in a nonaromatic organic molecular crystal

Mechanically flexible crystals are generally obtained based on weak interactions in the aromatic systems. Here, we reported the remarkable 2D elastic bending behaviors in a nonaromatic organic molecular crystal. The strong hydrogen bonding interactions are also verified to play a crucial role in the reversible bending.

Non-covalent interactions in the monohydrated complexes of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline

The eleven monohydrates of 1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) are analyzed through natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis and QTAIM methods employing M06-2X functional in DFT and MP2 methods. Here, the role of OH bonds as an acceptor and donor is critically analyzed. The role of lone pairs of O is critically monitored in two of the complexes, where N-H···O hydrogen bonds are present. The relative contributions of rehybridisation and hyperconjugation are compared in detail. Popelier criteria are satisfied in all the complexes barring a few exceptions involving weak hydrogen bonds. At the bond critical points (BCP), four monohydrates show higher values of electron density (ρ_C) and negative values of total electron energy density (H_C), while Laplacian [Formula: see text] remains positive. These complexes satisfy the criteria of partial covalency. All these are O-H⋅⋅⋅N-type bonds. Remaining h-bonds are weaker in nature. These are also confirmed by the smaller values of ρ_C at the respective BCP. The variation of potential energy density (V_C) among the complexes seems to be the most important factor in determining the nature of non-covalent interactions.

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Adamantylated 4,5,6,7-Tetrahalogeno-1H-benzimidazoles Novel Multi-Target Ligands (Potential CK2, M2 and SARS-CoV-2 Inhibitors); X-ray/DFT/QTAIM/Hirshfeld Surfaces/Molecular Docking Study

A series of new congeners, 1-[2-(1-adamantyl)ethyl]-1H-benzimidazole (AB) and 1-[2-(1-adamantyl)ethyl]-4,5,6,7-tetrahalogeno-1H-benzimidazole (Hal=Cl, Br, I; tClAB, tBrAB, tIAB), have been synthesized and studied. These novel multi-target ligands combine a benzimidazole ring known to show antitumor activity and an adamantyl moiety showing anti-influenza activity. Their crystal structures were determined by X-ray, while intermolecular interactions were studied using topological Bader's Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules, Hirshfeld Surfaces, CLP and PIXEL approaches. The newly synthesized compounds crystallize within two different space groups, P-1 (AB and tIAB) and P2₁/c (tClAB and tBrAB). A number of intramolecular hydrogen bonds, C-H⋯Hal (Hal=Cl, Br, I), were found in all halogen-containing congeners studied, but the intermolecular C-H⋯N hydrogen bond was detected only in AB and tIAB, while C-Hal⋯π only in tClAB and tBrAB. The interplay between C-H⋯N and C-H⋯Hal hydrogen bonds and a shift from the strong (C-H⋯Cl) to the very weak (C-H⋯I) attractive interactions upon Hal exchange, supplemented with Hal⋯Hal overlapping, determines the differences in the symmetry of crystalline packing and is crucial from the biological point of view. The hypothesis about the potential dual inhibitor role of the newly synthesized congeners was verified using molecular docking and the congeners were found to be pharmaceutically attractive as Human Casein Kinase 2, CK2, inhibitors, Membrane Matrix 2 Protein, M2, blockers and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2, SARS-CoV-2, inhibitors. The addition of adamantyl moiety seems to broaden and modify the therapeutic indices of the 4,5,6,7-tetrahalogeno-1H-benzimidazoles.

Synthesis of Carrier-Free Paclitaxel-Curcumin Nanoparticles: The Role of Curcuminoids

The systemic administration of paclitaxel (PTX)-based combinatorial therapies is significantly restricted due to the multidrug resistance. Curcumin (CUR) not only inhibits cancer-cell proliferation but also reverses the PTX resistance. However, achieving codelivery of these two drugs is a challenge due to their poor water solubility. Herein, we synthesized carrier-free PTX NPs by a facile nanoprecipitation method with the help of CUR and other curcuminoids present in turmeric extract. The prepared NPs demonstrated spherical morphologies with high conformational stability. Experimental studies showed that the presence of both bisdemethoxycurcumin and demethoxycurcumin is essential for the successful formation of spherical and monodisperse NPs. Computational studies revealed that the presence of the more sterically available curcuminoids BMC and DMC makes the self-assembly procedure more adaptable with a higher number of potential conformations that could give rise to more monodisperse PTX-CUR NPs. Compared with PTX alone, PTX-CUR NPs have shown comparable therapeutic efficiency in vitro and demonstrated a higher cellular internalization, highlighting their potential for in vivo applications. The successful formation of PTX-CUR NPs and the understanding of how multiple drugs behave at the molecular level also provide guidance for developing formulations for the synthesis of high-quality and effective carrier-free nanosystems for biomedical applications.

Effects of Cocrystallization on the Structure and Properties of Melt-Cast Explosive 2,4-Dinitroanisole: A Computational Study

Melt-cast explosive 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) crystal and its cocrystals DNAN/1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB) and DNAN/2-nitroaniline (NA) were used to identify the effects of cocrystallization on the crystal structure, non-covalent interactions, and melting points of the DNAN crystal through density functional theory and molecular dynamics. The components DNB and NA with subtle structure variations between the nitro group and amino group can significantly affect the non-covalent interactions, especially the π-π stacking and H-bonds, which can lead to different crystal stacking styles. The melting points of the DNAN crystal are decreased through the cocrystallization, which expands the utilization of the DNAN-based melt cast explosives. Our study deciphers the effects caused by the cocrystallization on the structure and properties of melt cast explosives and may help to design and optimize novel melt-cast explosives.

Supramolecular Diversity, Theoretical Investigation and Antibacterial Activity of Cu, Co and Cd Complexes Based on the Tridentate N,N,O-Schiff Base Ligand Formed In Situ

The four new complexes, [Cu(HL¹)(L²)Cl] (1), [Cu(HL¹)(L¹)]∙Cl∙2H₂O (2), [Co(L¹)₂]∙Cl (3) and [Cd(HL¹)I₂]∙dmso (4), have been prepared by one-pot reactions of the respective chloride or iodide metal salt with a non-aqueous solution of the polydentate Schiff base, HL¹, resulted from in situ condensation of benzhydrazide and 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, while a ligand HL², in case of 1, has been formed due to the oxidation of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde under reaction conditions. The crystallographic analysis revealed that the molecular building units in 1-4 are linked together into complex structures by hydrogen bonding, resulting in 1D, 2D and 3D supramolecular architectures for 1, 2 and 4, respectively, and the supramolecular trimer for 3. The electronic structures of 1-4 were investigated by the DFT theoretical calculations. The non-covalent interactions in the crystal structures of 1-4 were studied by means of the Hirshfeld surface analysis and the QTAIM theory with a special focus on the C-H⋯Cl bonding. From the DFT/DLPNO-CCSD(T) calculations, using a series of charged model {R₃C-H}⁰⋯Cl^- assemblies, we propose linear regressions for assessment of the interaction enthalpy (ΔH, kcal mol^-1) and the binding energy (BE, kcal mol^-1) between {R₃C-H}⁰ and Cl^- sites starting from the electron density at the bond critical point (ρ(r_BCP), a.u.): ΔH = -678 × ρ(r) + 3 and BE = -726 × ρ(r) + 4. It was also has been found that compounds 1, 3 and 4 during in vitro screening showed an antibacterial activity toward the nine bacteria species, comprising both Gram-positive and Gram-negative, with MIC values ranging from 156.2 to 625 mg/L. The best results have been obtained against Acinetobacter baumannii MβL.

Interactions of Antibacterial Naphthoquinones with Mesoporous Silica Surfaces: A Physicochemical and Theoretical Approach

1,4-naftoquinone (NQ) molecules have been extensively evaluated as potent antibacterial compounds; however, their use is limited, since they have low water solubility and exhibit toxicities in healthy eukaryotic cells. A possible path to overcoming these challenges is the use of particulate vehicles, such as SBA-15, which is a biocompatible and biodegradable mesoporous silica material, that may enhance drug delivery and decrease dosages. In this work, an isotherm model-based adsorption of three NQs into SBA-15 microparticles was evaluated. Interactions between NQs and SBA-15 microparticles were modeled at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory to understand the nature of such interactions. The results demonstrated that the adsorption of NQ, 2NQ, and 5NQ into SBA-15 fit the Freundlich adsorption model. According to theorical studies, physisorption is mediated by hydrogen bonds, while the most stable interactions occur between the carbonyl group of NQ and silica surfaces. Both experimental and theoretical results contribute to a deeper understanding of the use of SBA-15 or similar particles as nanovehicles in such a way that NQs can be modified in carbonyl or C3 to enhance adsorptions. The theoretical and experimental results were in accordance and contribute to a deeper understanding of how interactions between NQ-type molecules and SiO₂ materials occur.

How Water Interacts with the NOH Group: The Rotational Spectrum of the 1:1 N,N-diethylhydroxylamine·Water Complex

The rotational spectrum of the 1:1 N,N-diethylhydroxylamine-water complex has been investigated using pulsed jet Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in the 6.5-18.5 GHz frequency region. The most stable conformer has been detected as well as the 13C monosubstituted isotopologues in natural abundance and the 18O enriched water species, allowing to determine the nitrogen nuclear quadrupole coupling constants and the molecular structure in the vibrational ground state. The molecule has a Cs symmetry and the water lies in the bc symmetry plane forming two hydrogen bonds with the NOH frame with length: dHOH·NOH = 1.974 Å and dH2O·HON = 2.096 Å. From symmetry-adapted perturbation theory calculations coupled to atoms in molecule approach, the corresponding interaction energy values are estimated to be 24 and 13 kJ·mol-1, respectively. The great strength of the intermolecular interaction involving the nitrogen atom is in agreement with the high reactivity of hydroxylamine compounds at the nitrogen site.

A combined QTAIM/IRI topological analysis of the effect of axial/equatorial positions of NH2 and CN substituents in the [(PY5Me2)MoO]+ complex

By means of the Interaction Region Indicator (IRI) and Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM), the influence exerted by NH₂ (amino) and CN (cyano) as electron donor and electron acceptor substituent groups, respectively, located at para-positions of axial and equatorial pyridine rings of derivatized complexes coming from the [(PY₅Me₂)MoO]⁺ complex during the hydrogen molecular release in the gas phase was analyzed. In any case, a H-H covalent bond is forming at the transition state, with a strengthening of the electron density of 5.5% when the substituent group involved is NH₂ at the para-position of the axial pyridine ring. However, there was no difference between NH₂ and CN when these substituent groups are located at the para-positions of the equatorial pyridine rings. The topological properties of electron densities from the QTAIM are not perturbed by the electron donor and electron acceptor nature of the substituents, even when these substituent groups are located at the axial or equatorial pyridine rings of the Mo-based complex.
