Abstract
The excitation energy transfer (EET) allowing the concentration of the energy has been investigated in several multi-BODIPY architectures with the help of an approach coupling time dependent density functional theory to an implicit solvation scheme, the polarizable continuum model. We have first considered several strategies to compute the electronic coupling in a dyad varying the size of the donor/acceptor units, the bridge, the geometries and conformations. We have next studied the electronic coupling in three different architectures for which the EET rate constants have been experimentally measured both from luminescence and transient absorption data and from Förster theory. A good agreement with experimental values was obtained. Finally, in an effort to further improve these systems, we have designed several series of BODIPY triads, investigating the effect of acidochromism, core modifications, the position of the linkage and chemical substitutions on the EET coupling and rate constant. We show that several architectures allow us to increase the EET rate by one order of magnitude compared to the original compound.

Abstract
We present a theoretical investigation of the excited-state properties of a large series of structurally diverse arylcarbonium derivatives that are known to be challenging for theoretical models. More specifically, we compare the pros and cons of TD-DFT (TD-M06-2X), ADC(2), and BSE/GW approaches for a large panel of compounds, using two different solvent models. Both 0-0 and vertical transition energies are considered and compared to the experimental values. All approaches reasonably reproduce the auxochromic and acidochromic shifts, although in most cases both TD-DFT and BSE/GW return larger correlation with experimental values than ADC(2) for these shifts. In contrast, the absolute transition energies obtained with ADC(2) tend to be closer to the measurements, TD-DFT using the M06-2X functional largely overestimating the experimental references (by ca. 0.5 eV), and BSE/GW providing intermediate values. In addition, we show that the selected solvent model has a significant impact on the results, the corrected linear-response approach providing larger transition energies than its linear-response counterpart.

Abstract
Third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of polymethine dyes have been widely studied for applications such as all-optical switching. However, the limited accuracy of the current computational methodologies has prevented a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the lowest excited states and their influence on the molecular optical and NLO properties. Here, attention is paid to the lowest excited-state energies and their energetic ratio, as these characteristics impact the figure-of-merit for all-optical switching. For a series of model polymethines, we compare several algebraic diagrammatic construction (ADC) schemes for the polarization propagator with approximate second-order coupled cluster (CC2) theory, the widely used INDO/MRDCI approach and the symmetry-adapted cluster configuration interaction (SAC-CI) algorithm incorporating singles and doubles linked excitation operators (SAC-CI SD-R). We focus in particular on the ground-to-excited state transition dipole moments and the corresponding state dipole moments, since these quantities are found to be of utmost importance for an effective description of the third-order polarizability γ and two-photon absorption spectra. A sum-overstates expression has been used, which is found to quickly converge. While ADC(3/2) has been found to be the most appropriate method to calculate these properties, CC2 performs poorly.

The accuracies of
the excited-state dipole and quadrupole moments
obtained by TD-DFT are assessed by considering 16 different exchange-correlation
functionals and more than 30 medium and large molecules. Except for
excited-state presenting a significant charge-transfer character,
a relatively limited dependency on the nature of the functional is
found. It also turns out that while DFT ground-state dipole moments
tend to be too large, the reverse trend is obtained for their excited-state
counterparts, at least when hybrid functionals are used. Consequently,
the TD-DFT excess dipole moments are often too small, an error that
can be fortuitously corrected for charge-transfer transition by selecting
a pure or a hybrid functional containing a small share of exact exchange.
This error-cancelation phenomena explains the contradictory conclusions
obtained in previous investigations. Overall, the largest correlation
between CC2 and TD-DFT excess dipoles is obtained with M06-2X, but
at the price of a nearly systematic underestimation of this property
by ca. 1 D. For the excess quadrupole moments, the average errors
are of the order of 0.2–0.6 D·Å for the set of small
aromatic systems treated.

Abstract
The vertical excitation energies of 17 boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) core structures with a variety of substituents and ring sizes are benchmarked using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) with nine different functionals combined with the cc-pVTZ basis set. When compared to experimental measurements, all functionals provide mean absolute errors (mean AEs) greater than 0.3 eV, larger than the 0.1-0.3 eV differences typically expected from TD-DFT. Due to the high linear correlation of TD-DFT results with experiment, most functionals can be used to predict excitation energies if corrected empirically. Using the CAM-B3LYP functional, 0-0 transition energies are determined, and while the absolute difference is improved (mean AE = 0.478 eV compared to 0.579 eV), the correlation diminishes substantially (R(2) = 0.961 to 0.862). Two very recently introduced charge transfer (CT) indices, q(CT) and d(CT), and electron density difference (EDD) plots demonstrate that CT does not play a significant role for most of the BODIPYs examined and, thus, cannot be the source of error in TD-DFT. To assess TD-DFT methods, vertical excitation energies are determined utilizing TD-HF, configuration interaction CIS and CIS(D), equation of motion EOM-CCSD, SAC-CI, and Laplace-transform based local coupled-cluster singles and approximate doubles LCC2* methods. Moreover, multireference CASSCF and CASPT2 vertical excitation energies were also obtained for all species (except CASPT2 was not feasible for the four largest systems). The SAC-CI/cc-pVDZ, LCC2*/cc-pVDZ, and CASPT2/cc-pVDZ approaches are shown to have the smallest mean AEs of 0.154, 0.109, and 0.100 eV, respectively; the utility of the LCC2* approach is demonstrated for eight extended BODIPYs and aza-BODIPYs. We found that the problems with TD-DFT arise from difficulties in dealing with the differential electron correlation (as assessed by comparing CCS, CC2, LR-CCSD, CCSDR(T), and CCSDR(3) vertical excitation energies for five compounds) and from contributions of multireference character and double excitations (from analysis of the CASSCF wave functions).

Abstract
A series of 11 different boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dimers is carefully examined by means of ab initio and Tamm-Dancoff approximated density functional theory methods. Vertical and 0-0 excitation energies along with the tetraradical character of these dimers are determined. Possible application of a series of linked dimers for photodynamic therapy (PDT) was investigated through computing their excitation energies, spin-orbit coupling matrix elements, and singlet-triplet energy gaps. Finally through a systematic investigation of a series of 36 different BODIPY and aza-BODIPY dimers, a new class of near-IR heavy atom free photosensitizers for PDT action is introduced.

Abstract
A series of difluoroboranyls derived from amides carrying a variable π-conjugated spacer between the electron-donating (D) and electron-accepting (A) groups was synthesized and characterized with (1)H, (11)B, (13)C, (15)N, and (19)F NMR, electronic absorption, fluorescence spectroscopies, and first-principle calculations. The D-to-A distance in the series varied from 1.5 to 4.5 Å, causing bathochromic shifts of both the absorption and fluorescence maxima by more than 120 and 213 nm, respectively. These trends are rationalized by quantum-mechanical calculations that allow for quantification of the charge-transfer distance. Theoretical calculations were also performed to determine the vibronic couplings and thus to reproduce the experimental band shapes.

Abstract
The main photophysical properties of a series of expanded bacteriochlorins, recently synthetized, have been investigated by means of DFT and TD-DFT methods. Absorption spectra computed with different exchange-correlation functionals, B3LYP, M06 and ωB97XD, have been compared with the experimental ones. In good agreement, all the considered systems show a maximum absorption wavelength that falls in the therapeutic window (600-800 nm). The obtained singlet-triplet energy gaps are large enough to ensure the production of cytotoxic singlet molecular oxygen. The computed spin-orbit matrix elements suggest a good probability of intersystem spin-crossing between singlet and triplet excited states, since they result to be higher than those computed for 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(m-hydroxyphenyl)chlorin (Foscan©) already used in the photodynamic therapy (PDT) protocol. Because of the investigated properties, these expanded bacteriochlorins can be proposed as PDT agents.

Abstract
BODIPY laser dyes constitute a fascinating topic of research in modern photochemistry due to the large variety of options its chromophore offers, which is ready available for a multitude of synthetic routes. Indeed, in the literature one can find a huge battery of compounds based on the indacene core. The possibility of modulating the spectroscopic properties or inducing new photophysical processes by the substitution pattern of the BODIPY dyes has boosted the number of scientific and technological applications for these fluorophores. Along the following lines, I will overview the main results achieved in our laboratory with BODIPYs oriented to optoelectronic as well to biophotonic applications, stressing the more relevant photophysical issues to be considered in the design of a tailor-made BODIPY for a certain application and pointing out some of the remaining challenges.

Abstract
The last decade has witnessed significant advance in the imaging of living systems using fluorescent markers. This progress has been primarily associated with the discovery of different spectral variants of fluorescent proteins. However, the fluorescent protein technology has its own limitations and, in some cases, the use of low-molecular-weight fluorophores is preferable. In this review, we describe the arsenal of synthetic fluorescent tools that are currently in researchers' hands and span virtually the entire spectrum, from the UV to visible and, further, to the near-infrared region. An overview of recent advances in site-directed introduction of synthetic fluorophores into target cellular objects is provided. Application of these fluorescent probes to the solution of a wide range of biological problems, in particular, to the determination of local ion concentrations and pH in living systems, is discussed.

Abstract
Hemicurcuminoids are based on half of the π-conjugated backbone of curcuminoids. The synthesis of a series of such systems and their borondifluoride complexes is described. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of difluorodioxaborine species were investigated as a function of the nature of electron donor and acceptor groups appended at either terminal positions of the molecular backbone. The emissive character of these dipolar dyes was attributed to an intraligand charge transfer process, leading to fluorescence emission that is strongly dependent on solvent polarity. Quasi-quantitative quenching of fluorescence in high polarity solvents was attributed to photoinduced electron transfer. These dyes were shown to behave as versatile fluorophores. Indeed, they display efficient two-photon excited fluorescence emission leading to high two-photon brightness values. Furthermore, they form nanoparticles in water whose fluorescence emission quantum yield is less than that of the dye in solution, owing to aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching. When cos7 living cells were exposed to these weakly-emitting nanoparticles, one- and two-photon excited fluorescence spectra showed a strong emission within the cytoplasm that originated from the individual molecules. Dye uptake thus involved a disaggregation mechanism at the cell membrane which restored fluorescence emission. This off-on fluorescence switching allows a selective optical monitoring of those molecules that do enter the cell, which offers improved sensitivity and selectivity of detection for bioimaging purposes.

Abstract
The 0-0 energies of 80 medium and large molecules have been computed with a large panel of theoretical formalisms. We have used an approach computationally tractable for large molecules, that is, the structural and vibrational parameters are obtained with TD-DFT, the solvent effects are accounted for with the PCM model, whereas the total and transition energies have been determined with TD-DFT and with five wave function approaches accounting for contributions from double excitations, namely, CIS(D), ADC(2), CC2, SCS-CC2, and SOS-CC2, as well as Green's function based BSE/GW approach. Atomic basis sets including diffuse functions have been systematically applied, and several variations of the PCM have been evaluated. Using solvent corrections obtained with corrected linear-response approach, we found that three schemes, namely, ADC(2), CC2, and BSE/GW allow one to reach a mean absolute deviation smaller than 0.15 eV compared to the measurements, the two former yielding slightly better correlation with experiments than the latter. CIS(D), SCS-CC2, and SOS-CC2 provide significantly larger deviations, though the latter approach delivers highly consistent transition energies. In addition, we show that (i) ADC(2) and CC2 values are extremely close to each other but for systems absorbing at low energies; (ii) the linear-response PCM scheme tends to overestimate solvation effects; and that (iii) the average impact of nonequilibrium correction on 0-0 energies is negligible.

Abstract
The objective of lung gene therapy is to reach the respiratory epithelial cells in order to deliver a functional nucleic acid sequence. To improve the synthetic carrier's efficacy, knowledge of their biodistribution and elimination pathways, as well as cellular barriers faced, depending on the administration route, is necessary. Indeed, the in vivo fate guides the adaptation of their chemical structure and formulation to increase their transfection capacity while maintaining their tolerance. With this goal, lipidic fluorescent probes were synthesized and formulated with cationic lipophosphoramidate KLN47 (KLN: Karine Le Ny). We found that such formulations present constant compaction properties and similar transfection results without inducing additional cytotoxicity. Next, biodistribution profiles of pegylated and unpegylated lipoplexes were compared after systemic injection in mice. Pegylation of complexes led to a prolonged circulation in the bloodstream, whereas their in vivo bioluminescent expression profiles were similar. Moreover, systemic administration of pegylated lipoplexes resulted in a transient liver toxicity. These results indicate that these new fluorescent compounds could be added into lipoplexes in small amounts without perturbing the transfection capacities of the formulations. Such additional properties allow exploration of the in vivo biodistribution profiles of synthetic carriers as well as the expression intensity of the reporter gene.

Abstract
We perform benchmark calculations of the Bethe-Salpeter vertical excitation energies for the set of 28 molecules constituting the well-known Thiel’s set, complemented by a series of small molecules representative of the dye chemistry field. We show that Bethe-Salpeter calculations based on a molecular orbital energy spectrum obtained with non-self-consistent G0W0 calculations starting from semilocal DFT functionals dramatically underestimate the transition energies. Starting from the popular PBE0 hybrid functional significantly improves the results even though this leads to an average -0.59 eV redshift compared to reference calculations for Thiel’s set. It is shown, however, that a simple self-consistent scheme at the GW level, with an update of the quasiparticle energies, not only leads to a much better agreement with reference values, but also significantly reduces the impact of the starting DFT functional. On average, the Bethe-Salpeter scheme based on self-consistent GW calculations comes close to the best time-dependent DFT calculations with the PBE0 functional with a 0.98 correlation coefficient and a 0.18 (0.25) eV mean absolute deviation compared to TD-PBE0 (theoretical best estimates) with a tendency to be red-shifted. We also observe that TD-DFT and the standard adiabatic Bethe-Salpeter implementation may differ significantly for states implying a large multiple excitation character.
