Synthesis of Seven Indolizine-Derived Pentathiepines: Strong Electronic Structure Response to Nitro Substitution in Position C-9

Seven new 1,2,3,4,5-pentathiepino[6,7-a]indolizines were synthesized in which the pentathiepine moieties bear an indolizine backbone that is derivatized from C-H to F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, NO2-, and CH3-substitutions, respectively, in a meta position relative to the aza group on the pyridine moiety. Their preparation took place via two common steps: (i) a Sonogashira coupling between (4-substituted) 2-bromo- or 2-chloropyridines and propynyl 3,3-diethylacetal, and (ii) a ring closing reaction mediated by a molybdenum oxo-bistetrasulfido complex and elemental sulfur. The latter simultaneously facilitates the 1,2,3,4,5-pentathiepino chain/ring- and indolizine ring-formations. The fluoro derivative was addressed with 2-bromo-5-aminopyridine as the starting material via a Sandmeyer reaction. The iodo derivative was obtained from 5-bromo-2-alkynylpiridine using a metal-assisted variation of the Finkelstein reaction. The requirement to explore different reaction conditions and the varied respective yields of the final products are discussed. The influence of the distinct substitutions on the pyridine moieties, their electronic structures, and respective chemical properties was investigated through a set of spectroscopic/analytical characterizations. Intriguingly, in all cases, the nitro-substituted derivative exhibited a distinct behavior compared to the six other investigated derivatives, which was also addressed computationally. All seven new pentathiepines were crystallized, and their respective molecular structures were determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction. These structures are compared and discussed as are their respective packing patterns.

Novel Schiff Base Derived from Amino Pyrene: Synthesis, Characterization, Crystal Structure Determination, and Anticancer Applications of the Ligand and Its Metal Complexes

In this study, we report the cytotoxicity of a newly synthesized Schiff base HL ((E)-2-ethoxy-6((pyren-1-ylimino)methyl)phenol) and its derived metal complexes (Zn(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Cr(III), and Fe(III)) along with their structural characterizations by means of elemental analysis, magnetic moment, molar conductance, IR, UV-Vis, ESR, and mass spectrometry. The single X-ray diffraction of the HL shows that it exists in the phenol-imine form in its solid state. The NMR and IR data indicate that the bidentate binding of the Schiff base ligand with the metal center occurs during complexation through the azomethine nitrogen atom and the hydroxyl group oxygen atom of the 3-ethoxy salicylaldehyde. The electronic spectra and magnetic measurements indicate that the Co(II) complex has a tetrahedral geometry and that the Cr(III) and Fe(III) complexes have a distorted octahedral geometry. The ESR and electronic spectra suggest that the Cu(II) complex has a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The cytotoxic effects of the HL and all of the metal complexes were studied using human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells. The Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes exhibited the highest activity against the tested cell line, with IC50 values of 5.66 and 12.74 μg/mL, respectively, and their activity was higher than that of the fluorouracil cancer drug against the MCF-7 cells (18.05 μg/mL).

Iron(II) Complexes with Porphyrin and Tetrabenzoporphyrin: CASSCF/MCQDPT2 Study of the Electronic Structures and UV-Vis Spectra by sTD-DFT

The geometry and electronic structures of iron(II) complexes with porphyrin (FeP) and tetrabenzoporphyrin (FeTBP) in ground and low-lying excited electronic states are determined by DFT (PBE0/def2-TZVP) calculations and the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method, followed by the multiconfigurational quasi-degenerate second-order perturbation theory (MCQDPT2) approach to determine the dynamic electron correlation. The minima on the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the ground (³A_2g) and low-lying, high-spin (⁵A_1g) electronic states correspond to the planar structures of FeP and FeTBP with D_4h symmetry. According to the results of the MCQDPT2 calculations, the wave functions of the ³A_2g and ⁵A_1g electronic states are single determinant. The electronic absorption (UV-Vis) spectra of FeP and FeTBP are simulated within the framework of the simplified time-dependent density functional theory (sTDDFT) approach with the use of the long-range corrected CAM-B3LYP function. The most intensive bands of the UV-Vis spectra of FeP and FeTBP occur in the Soret near-UV region of 370-390 nm.

DFT Study of Molecular Structure, Electronic and Vibrational Spectra of Tetrapyrazinoporphyrazine, Its Perchlorinated Derivative and Their Al, Ga and In Complexes

Electronic and geometric structures of metal-free, Al, Ga and In complexes with tetrapyrazinoporphyrazine (TPyzPA) and octachlorotetrapyrazinoporphyrazine (TPyzPACl₈) were investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and compared in order to study the effect of chlorination on the structure and properties of these macrocycles. The nature of the bonds between metal atoms and nitrogen atoms was described using the NBO-analysis. Simulation and interpretation of electronic spectra were performed with the use of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). A description of calculated IR spectra was carried out based on the analysis of the distribution of the potential energy of normal vibrational coordinates.

Molecular Structure, Thermodynamic and Spectral Characteristics of Metal-Free and Nickel Complex of Tetrakis(1,2,5-thiadiazolo)porphyrazine

The Knudsen effusion method with mass spectrometric control of the vapor composition was used to study the possibility of a congruent transition to the gas phase and to estimate the enthalpy of sublimation of metal-free tetrakis(1,2,5-thiadiazolo)porphyrazine and its nickel complex (H₂TTDPz and NiTTDPz, respectively). The geometrical and electronic structure of H₂TTDPz and NiTTDPz in ground and low-lying excited electronic states were determined by DFT calculations. The electronic structure of NiTTDPz was studied by the complete active space (CASSCF) method, following accounting dynamic correlation by multiconfigurational quasi-degenerate second-order perturbation theory (MCQDPT2). A geometrical structure of D_2h and D_4h symmetry was obtained for H₂TTDPz and NiTTDPz, respectively. According to data obtained by the MCQDPT2 method, the nickel complex possesses the ground state ¹A_1g, and the wave function of the ground state has the form of a single determinant. Electronic absorption and vibrational (IR and resonance Raman) spectra of H₂TTDPz and NiTTDPz were studied experimentally and simulated theoretically.

Construction of Helical Structures with Multiple Fused Anthracenes: Structures and Properties of Long Expanded Helicenes

Polycyclic aromatic compounds consisting of four or five fused anthracene units were synthesized by PtCl₂ -catalyzed cycloisomerization as novel long expanded helicenes. These compounds have helical structures with significant stacking of the terminal anthracene moieties at 0.33 nm interlayer distance. In the UV-vis and fluorescence spectra, the absorption and emission bands were red-shifted as the number of fused anthracene units was increased. The characteristic broad and long-lived emission bands of the long analogues are explained by the excimer-like stabilization of the excited state. These photophysical data as well as their cyclic voltammetric data are discussed on the basis of the π-conjugation and interlayer π⋅⋅⋅π interactions in the molecular structures and the molecular orbitals. The barrier and mechanism of helical inversion are also reported.

Computational insight into excited states of the ring-opening radicals from the pyrolysis of furan biofuels

The low-lying valence excited states and Rydberg states of the radical species from the ring-opening reactions in pyrolysis of furan biofuels have been determined by extensive density functional theory and sophisticated wave function theory calculations. The radicals 1-C₄ H₅ O-2, 2-furylCH₂ , and 4-C₆ H₇ O with the delocalized π-type single electron are predicted to be most stable among the reactive species here for furan, 2-methyfuran, and 2,5-dimethylfuran, respectively. Predicted vertical transition energies by TD-CAM-B3LYP show good agreement with those by CASPT2. Some among the electronic excitations to low-lying states can take place in the visible light region, and they may be involved in the combustion process. Further surface hopping dynamics simulations on the excited states of the most stable ring-opening radical 1-C₄ H₅ O-2 of furan as an example reveal that 89.9% sampling trajectories at the initial excited state of 2² A"(π¹ π*² ) decay to the 1² A'(n¹ π*² ) state within an average of 384 fs, and then 81.2% trajectories at the 1² A' state go to the ground state within an average of 114 fs. At the end of the simulation for 1000 fs, 18.8% trajectories still stay on the excited states of 2² A" and 1² A', suggesting that the reactive radicals in the ground state are mainly responsible for the combustion chemistry of furan biofuels. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Fine Structure in Electronic Spectra of Cyanine Dyes: Are Sub-Bands Largely Determined by a Dominant Vibration or a Collection of Singly Excited Vibrations?

This work critically examines attempts to model the fine structure apparent in electronic spectra of cyanine dyes and their analogues. Numerous computational studies reported over the past decade attribute the origin of sub‐bands and their relative intensities to vibronic transitions in which the relevant electronic transition is coupled, irrespective of symmetry, with a collection of vibrations. It is contended that this type of approach is not supported by experimental evidence. An argument is reiterated for a more appropriate model that adheres closely to fundamental principles and fits the data. It stipulates that essentially just one symmetric vibration, carbon–carbon bond stretching of the cyanine polymethine chain, dominates the coupling and is responsible for the observed fine structure. Furthermore, it is pointed out that the intensities of the sub‐bands are readily explained by means of the Franck–Condon principle.

Structure-property relationships and third-order nonlinearities in diketopyrrolopyrrole based D-π-A-π-D molecules

Nine new quadrupolar chromophores based on diketopyrrolopyrrole were designed and prepared by cross-coupling reactions. The property tuning has been achieved by structural variation of the peripheral substituents (donor) and enlargement of the π-system. Fundamental properties of target molecules were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, electrochemistry, and absorption and emission spectra. Nonlinear optical properties were studied by measuring the third harmonic generation. The experimental data were completed by quantum-chemical calculations and structure–property relationships were elucidated.

Electronic π-to-π* Excitations of Rhodamine Dyes Exhibit a Time-Dependent Kohn-Sham Theory "Cyanine Problem"

The longest-wavelength π-to-π* electronic excitations of rhodamine-like dyes (RDs) with different group 16 heteroatoms (O, S, Se, Te) have been investigated. Time-dependent Kohn-Sham theory (TDKST) calculations were compared with coupled-cluster (CC) and equations-of-motion (EOM) CC results for π-to-π* singlet and triplet excitations. The RDs exhibit characteristics in the TDKST calculations that are very similar to previously investigated cyanine dyes, in the sense that the singlet energies obtained with nonhybrid functionals are too high compared with the CC results at the SD(T) level. The errors became increasingly larger for functionals with increasing amounts of exact exchange. TDKST with all tested functionals led to severe underestimations of the corresponding triplet excitations and overestimations of the singlet-triplet gaps. Long-range-corrected range-separated exchange and "optimal tuning" of the range separation parameter did not significantly improve the TDKST results. A detailed analysis suggests that the problem is differential electron correlation between the ground and excited states, which is not treated sufficiently by the relatively small integrals over the exchange-correlation response kernel that enter the excitation energy expression. Numerical criteria are suggested that may help identify "cyanine-like" problems in TDKST calculations of excitation spectra.

Can Expanded Bacteriochlorins Act as Photosensitizers in Photodynamic Therapy? Good News from Density Functional Theory Computations

The main photophysical properties of a series of expanded bacteriochlorins, recently synthetized, have been investigated by means of DFT and TD-DFT methods. Absorption spectra computed with different exchange-correlation functionals, B3LYP, M06 and ωB97XD, have been compared with the experimental ones. In good agreement, all the considered systems show a maximum absorption wavelength that falls in the therapeutic window (600-800 nm). The obtained singlet-triplet energy gaps are large enough to ensure the production of cytotoxic singlet molecular oxygen. The computed spin-orbit matrix elements suggest a good probability of intersystem spin-crossing between singlet and triplet excited states, since they result to be higher than those computed for 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(m-hydroxyphenyl)chlorin (Foscan©) already used in the photodynamic therapy (PDT) protocol. Because of the investigated properties, these expanded bacteriochlorins can be proposed as PDT agents.

Electronic transitions in conformationally controlled tetrasilanes with a wide range of SiSiSiSi dihedral angles

Unlike π-electron chromophores, the peralkylated n-tetrasilane σ-electron chromophore resembles a chameleon in that its electronic spectrum changes dramatically as its silicon backbone is twisted almost effortlessly from the syn to the anti conformation (changing the SiSiSiSi dihedral angle ω from 0 to 180°). A combination of UV absorption, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), and linear dichroism (LD) spectroscopy on conformationally controlled tetrasilanes 1-9, which cover fairly evenly the full range of angles ω, permitted a construction of an experimental correlation diagram for three to four lowest valence electronic states. The free chain tetrasilane n-Si4 Me10 (10), normally present as a mixture of three enantiomeric conformer pairs of widely different angles ω, has also been included in our study. The spectral trends are interpreted in terms of avoided crossings of 1B with 2B and 2A with 3A states, in agreement with SAC-CI calculations on the excited states of 1-7 and conformers of 10.

Stability and electronic spectra of C76N2 isomers

Study of geometries of 16 possible isomers for C76N2 based on C78(C2v) by intermediate neglect of differential overlap (INDO) series of methods indicated that the most stable geometry 25,78-C76N2 where two nitrogen atoms substitute two apexes C25 and C78 near the shortest X axis and Y axis formed by two hexagons and a pentagon. Electronic structures and spectra of C76N2 were investigated. The reason for the red-shift for absorptions of C76N2 compared with that of C78(C2v) is discussed.
