Coupling Real-Time Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory with Polarizable Force Field

Real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) is a powerful tool for obtaining spectroscopic observables and understanding complex, time-dependent properties. Currently, performing RT-TDDFT calculations on large, fully quantum mechanical systems is not computationally feasible. Previously, polarizable mixed quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical (QM/MMPol) models have been successful in providing accurate, yet efficient, approximations to a fully quantum mechanical system. Here we develop a coupling scheme between induced dipole based QM/MMPol and RT-TDDFT. Our approach is validated by comparing calculated spectra with both real-time and linear-response TDDFT calculations. The model developed within provides an accurate method for performing RT-TDDFT calculations on extended systems while accounting for mutual polarization between the quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical regions.

Understanding the polymorphism-dependent emission properties of molecular crystals using a refined QM/MM approach

A refined QM/MM approach demonstrated that a monomer model is suitable for describing the emission spectra of crystals without the ππ stacking interaction. Whereas for the crystals with notable intermolecular ππ stacking interaction, the most stable trimer model (or at least a dimer model) should be used for accurately describing the corresponding emission spectra. This approach is applied to understand the emission properties of two kinds of organic polymorphs.

Blue-to-Green Emitting Neutral Ir(III) Complexes Bearing Pentafluorosulfanyl Groups: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

A structure-property relationship study of neutral heteroleptic (1 and 2, [Ir(C^∧N)₂(L^∧X)]) and homoleptic (3 and 4, fac-[Ir(C^∧N)₃]) Ir(III) complexes (where L^∧X = anionic 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dionato-κO³,κO⁶ (thd) and C^∧N = a cyclometalating ligand bearing a pentafluorosulfanyl (-SF₅) electron-withdrawing group (EWG) at the C₄ (HL1) and C₃ (HL2) positions of the phenyl moiety) is presented. These complexes have been fully structurally characterized, including by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and their electrochemical and optical properties have also been extensively studied. While complexes 1 ([Ir(L1)₂(thd)]), 3 (Ir(L1)₃), and 4 (Ir(L2)₃) exhibit irreversible first reduction waves based on the pentafluorosulfanyl substituent in the range of -1.71 to -1.88 V (vs SCE), complex 2 ([Ir(L2)₂(thd)]) exhibits a quasi-reversible pyridine_C^∧N-based first reduction wave that is anodically shifted at -1.38 V. The metal + C^∧N ligand oxidation waves are all quasi-reversible in the range of 1.08-1.54 V (vs SCE). The optical gap, determined from the lowest energy absorption maxima, decreases from 4 to 2 to 3 to 1, and this trend is consistent with the Hammett behavior (σ_m/σ_p with respect to the metal-carbon bond) of the -SF₅ EWG. In degassed acetonitrile, for complexes 2-4, introduction of the -SF₅ group produced a blue-shifted emission (λ_em 484-506 nm) in comparison to reference complexes [Ir(ppy)₂(acac)] (R1, where acac = acetylacetonato) (λ_em 528 nm in MeCN), [Ir(CF₃-ppy) (acac)] (R3, where CF₃-ppyH = 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyridine) (λ_em 522 nm in DCM), and [Ir(CF₃-ppy)₃] (R8) (λ_em 507 nm in MeCN). The emission of complex 1, in contrast, was modestly red shifted (λ_em 534 nm). Complexes 2 and 4, where the -SF₅ EWG is substituted para to the Ir-C_C^∧N bond, are efficient phosphorescent emitters, with high photoluminescence quantum yields (Φ_PL = 58-79% in degassed MeCN solution) and microsecond emission lifetimes (τ_ε = 1.35-3.02 μs). Theoretical and experimental observations point toward excited states that are principally ligand centered (³LC) in nature, but with a minor metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (³MLCT) transition component, as a function of the regiochemistry of the pentafluorosulfanyl group. The ³LC character is predominant over the mixed ³CT character for complexes 1, 2, and 4, while in complex 3, there is exclusive ³LC character as demonstrated by unrestricted density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The short emission lifetimes and reasonable Φ_PL values in doped thin film (5 wt % in PMMA), particularly for 4, suggest that these neutral complexes would be attractive candidate emitters in organic light-emitting diodes.

Intriguing Influence of -COOH-Driven Intermolecular Aggregation and Acid-Base Interactions with N,N-Dimethylformamide on the Second-Order Nonlinear-Optical Response of 5,15 Push-Pull Diarylzinc(II) Porphyrinates

A series of 5,15 push-pull meso-diarylzinc(II) porphyrinates, carrying one or two -COOH or -COOCH₃ acceptor groups and a -OCH₃ or a -N(CH₃)₂ donor group, show in N,N-dimethylformamide and CHCl₃ solutions a negative and solvent-dependent second-order nonlinear-optical (NLO) response measured by the electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation (EFISH) technique, different from the structurally related zinc(II) porphyrinate carrying a -N(CH₃)₂ donor group and a -NO₂ acceptor group, where a still solvent-dependent but positive EFISH second-order response was previously reported. Moreover, when a -N(CH₃)₂ donor group and a -COOH acceptor group are part of a sterically hindered 2,12 push-pull β-pyrrolic-substituted tetraarylzinc(II) porphyrinate, the EFISH response is positive and solvent-independent. In order to rationalize these rather intriguing series of observations, EFISH measurements have been integrated by electronic absorption and IR spectroscopic investigations and by density functional theory (DFT) and coupled-perturbed DFT theoretical and ¹H pulsed-gradient spin-echo NMR investigations, which prompt that the significant concentration effects and the strong influence of the solvent nature on the NLO response are originated by a complex whole of different aggregation processes induced by the -COOH group.

Selective Complexation of Cyanide and Fluoride Ions with Ammonium Boranes: A Theoretical Study on Sensing Mechanism Involving Intramolecular Charge Transfer and Configurational Changes

The anion binding selectivity and the recognition mechanism of two isomeric boranes, namely, 4-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boranyl]-N,N,N-trimethylaniline ([p-(Mes₂B)C₆H₄(NMe₃)]⁺, 1, where "Mes" represents mesitylene and "Me" represents methyl) and 2-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boranyl]-N,N,N-trimethylaniline ([o-(Mes₂B)C₆H₄(NMe₃)]⁺, 2) has been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent-density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods. Natural population analysis indicates that the central boron atoms in 1 and 2 are the most active centers for nucleophilic addition of anions. The negative magnitude of free energy changes (ΔG) reveals that out of CN^-, F^-, Cl^-, Br^-, NO₃^-, and HSO₄^- only the binding of CN^- and F^- with 1 and 2 is thermodynamically feasible and spontaneous. In addition, the calculated binding energies reveal that the CN^- is showing lesser binding affinity than F^- both with 1 and 2, while other ions, viz. NO₃^-, HSO₄^-, Br^-, and Cl^-, either do not bind at all or show very insignificant binding energy. The first excited states (S₁) of 1 and 2 are shown to be the local excited states with π → σ* transition by frontier molecular orbital analysis, whereas fourth excited states (S₄) of 4-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boranyl]-N,N,N-trimethylaniline cyanide ([p-(Mes₂B)C₆H₄(NMe₃)] CN, 1CN, the cyano form of 1) and 4-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boranyl]-N,N,N-trimethylaniline fluoride ([p-(Mes₂B)C₆H₄(NMe₃)] F, 1F, the fluoro form of 1) and fifth excited state (S₅) of 2-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boranyl]-N,N,N-trimethylaniline fluoride ([o-(Mes₂B)C₆H₄(NMe₃)] F, 2F, the fluoro form of 2) are charge separation states that are found to be responsible for the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process. The synergistic effect of ICT and partial configuration changes induce fluorescence quenching in 1CN, 1F, and 2F after a significant internal conversion (IC) from S₄ and S₅ to S_1.

Is the Bethe-Salpeter Formalism Accurate for Excitation Energies? Comparisons with TD-DFT, CASPT2, and EOM-CCSD

Developing ab initio approaches able to provide accurate excited-state energies at a reasonable computational cost is one of the biggest challenges in theoretical chemistry. In that framework, the Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, combined with the GW exchange-correlation self-energy, which maintains the same scaling with system size as TD-DFT, has recently been the focus of a rapidly increasing number of applications in molecular chemistry. Using a recently proposed set encompassing excitation energies of many kinds [J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2016, 7, 586-591], we investigate here the performances of BSE/GW. We compare these results to CASPT2, EOM-CCSD, and TD-DFT data and show that BSE/GW provides an accuracy comparable to the two wave function methods. It is particularly remarkable that the BSE/GW is equally efficient for valence, Rydberg, and charge-transfer excitations. In contrast, it provides a poor description of triplet excited states, for which EOM-CCSD and CASPT2 clearly outperform BSE/GW. This contribution therefore supports the use of the Bethe-Salpeter approach for spin-conserving transitions.

High-performance light-emitting diodes based on carbene-metal-amides

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) promise highly efficient lighting and display technologies. We introduce a new class of linear donor-bridge-acceptor light-emitting molecules, which enable solution-processed OLEDs with near-100% internal quantum efficiency at high brightness. Key to this performance is their rapid and efficient utilization of triplet states. Using time-resolved spectroscopy, we establish that luminescence via triplets occurs within 350 nanoseconds at ambient temperature, after reverse intersystem crossing to singlets. We find that molecular geometries exist at which the singlet-triplet energy gap (exchange energy) is close to zero, so that rapid interconversion is possible. Calculations indicate that exchange energy is tuned by relative rotation of the donor and acceptor moieties about the bridge. Unlike other systems with low exchange energy, substantial oscillator strength is sustained at the singlet-triplet degeneracy point.

Point charge embedding for ONIOM excited states calculations

Hybrid quantum mechanical methods can assist in the interpretation and prediction of the electronic spectra of large molecular structures. In this work, we study the performance of the ONIOM (Our own N-layered Integrated molecular Orbital molecular Mechanics) hybrid method for the calculation of transition energies and oscillator strengths by embedding the core region in a field of fixed point charges. These charges introduce polarization effects from the substituent groups to the core region. We test various charge definitions, with particular attention to the issue of overpolarization near the boundary between layers. To minimize this issue, we fit the charges on the electrostatic potential of the entire structure in the presence of the link atoms used to cap dangling bonds. We propose two constrained fitting strategies: one that produces an average set of charges common to both model system calculations, EE(L1), and one that produces two separate sets of embedding charges, EE(L2). The results from our tests show that indeed electronic embedding with constrained-fitted charges tends to improve the performance of ONIOM compared to non-embedded calculations. However, the EE(L2) charges work best for transition energies, and the EE(L1) charges work best for oscillator strengths. This may be an indication that fixed point charges do not have enough flexibility to adapt to each system, and other effects (e.g., polarization of the embedding field) may be necessary.

Bethe-Salpeter study of cationic dyes: Comparisons with ADC(2) and TD-DFT

We present a theoretical investigation of the excited-state properties of a large series of structurally diverse arylcarbonium derivatives that are known to be challenging for theoretical models. More specifically, we compare the pros and cons of TD-DFT (TD-M06-2X), ADC(2), and BSE/GW approaches for a large panel of compounds, using two different solvent models. Both 0-0 and vertical transition energies are considered and compared to the experimental values. All approaches reasonably reproduce the auxochromic and acidochromic shifts, although in most cases both TD-DFT and BSE/GW return larger correlation with experimental values than ADC(2) for these shifts. In contrast, the absolute transition energies obtained with ADC(2) tend to be closer to the measurements, TD-DFT using the M06-2X functional largely overestimating the experimental references (by ca. 0.5 eV), and BSE/GW providing intermediate values. In addition, we show that the selected solvent model has a significant impact on the results, the corrected linear-response approach providing larger transition energies than its linear-response counterpart.

An EOM-CCSD-PCM Benchmark for Electronic Excitation Energies of Solvated Molecules

In this work, we benchmark the equation of motion coupled cluster with single and double excitations (EOM-CCSD) method combined with the polarizable continuum model (PCM) for the calculation of electronic excitation energies of solvated molecules. EOM-CCSD is one of the most accurate methods for computing one-electron excitation energies, and accounting for the solvent effect on this property is a key challenge. PCM is one of the most widely employed solvation models due to its adaptability to virtually any solute and its efficient implementation with density functional theory methods (DFT). Our goal in this work is to evaluate the reliability of EOM-CCSD-PCM, especially compared to time-dependent DFT-PCM (TDDFT-PCM). Comparisons between calculated and experimental excitation energies show that EOM-CCSD-PCM consistently overestimates experimental results by 0.4-0.5 eV, which is larger than the expected EOM-CCSD error in vacuo. We attribute this decrease in accuracy to the approximated solvation model. Thus, we investigate a particularly important source of error: the lack of H-bonding interactions in PCM. We show that this issue can be addressed by computing an energy shift, Δ_HB, from bare-PCM to microsolvation + PCM at DFT level. Our results show that such a shift is independent of the functional used, contrary to the absolute value of the excitation energy. Hence, we suggest an efficient protocol where the EOM-CCSD-PCM transition energy is corrected by Δ_HB(DFT), which consistently improves the agreement with the experimental measurements.

Physicochemical and Electronic Properties of Cationic [6]Helicenes: from Chemical and Electrochemical Stabilities to Far-Red (Polarized) Luminescence

The physicochemical properties of cationic dioxa (1), azaoxa (2), and diaza (3) [6]helicenes demonstrate a much higher chemical stability of the diaza adduct 3 (pKR+ =20.4, Ered1/2 =-0.72 V) compared to its azaoxa 2 (pKR+ =15.2, Ered1/2 =-0.45 V) and dioxa 1 (pKR+ =8.8, Ered1/2 =-0.12 V) analogues. The fluorescence of these cationic chromophores is established, and ranges from the orange to the far-red regions. From 1 to 3, a bathochromic shift of the lowest energy transitions (up to 614 nm in acetonitrile) and an enhancement of the fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes (up to 31 % and 9.8 ns, respectively, at 658 nm) are observed. The triplet quantum yields and circularly polarized luminescence are also reported. Finally, fine tuning of the optical properties of the diaza [6]helicene core is achieved through selective and orthogonal post-functionalization reactions (12 examples, compounds 4-15). The electronic absorption is modulated from the orange to the far-red spectral range (560-731 nm), and fluorescence is observed from 591 to 755 nm with enhanced quantum efficiency up to 70 % (619 nm). The influence of the peripheral auxochrome substituents is rationalized by first-principles calculations.

Multilayer Dye Aggregation at Dye/TiO2 Interface via π…π Stacking and Hydrogen Bond and Its Impact on Solar Cell Performance: A DFT Analysis

Multilayer dye aggregation at the dye/TiO₂ interface of dye-sensitized solar cells is probed via first principles calculations, using p-methyl red azo dye as an example. Our calculations suggest that the multilayer dye aggregates at the TiO₂ surface can be stabilized by π…π stacking and hydrogen bond interactions. Compared with previous two-dimensional monolayer dye/TiO₂ model, the multilayer dye aggregation model proposed in this study constructs a three-dimensional multilayer dye/TiO₂ interfacial structure, and provides a better agreement between experimental and computational results in dye coverage and dye adsorption energy. In particular, a dimer forms by π…π stacking interactions between two neighboring azo molecules, while one of them chemisorbs on the TiO₂ surface; a trimer may form by introducing one additional azo molecule on the dimer through a hydrogen bond between two carboxylic acid groups. Different forms of multilayer dye aggregates, either stabilized by π…π stacking or hydrogen bond, exhibit varied optical absorption spectra and electronic properties. Such variations could have a critical impact on the performance of dye sensitized solar cells.

Theoretical investigation on exciton-dissociation and charge-recombination processes of PC61BM-PTDPPSe interface

Designing and synthesizing novel electron-donor polymers with the high photovoltaic performances has remained a major challenge and hot issue in organic electronics. In this work, the exciton-dissociation (k dis ) and charge-recombination (k rec ) rates for the PC61BM-PTDPPSe system as a promising polymer-based solar cell candidate have been theoretically investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations coupled with the non-adiabatic Marcus charge transfer model. Moreover, a series of regression analysis has been carried out to explore the rational structure-property relationship. Results reveal that the PC61BM-PTDPPSe system possesses the large open-circuit voltage (0.77 V), middle-sized exiton binding energy (0.457 eV), and relatively small reorganization energies in exciton-dissociation (0.273 eV) and charge-recombination (0.530 eV) processes. With the Marcus model, the k dis , k rec , and the radiative decay rate (k s ), are estimated to be 3.167×10(11) s(-1), 3.767×10(10) s(-1), and 7.930×10(8) s(-1) respectively in the PC61BM-PTDPPSe interface. Comparably, the k dis is as 1∼3 orders of magnitude larger than the k rec and the k s , which indicates a fast and efficient photoinduced exciton-dissociation process in the PC61BM-PTDPPSe interface. Graphical Abstract PTDPPSe is predicted to be a promising electron donor polymer, and the PC61BM-PTDPPSe system is worthy of further device research by experiments.

Spectroscopic studies of the mechanism of reversible photodegradation of 1-substituted aminoanthraquinone-doped polymers

The mechanism of reversible photodegradation of 1-substituted aminoanthraquinones doped into poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene is investigated. Time-dependent density functional theory is employed to predict the transition energies and corresponding oscillator strengths of the proposed reversibly and irreversibly damaged dye species. Ultraviolet-visible and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy are used to characterize which species are present. FTIR spectroscopy indicates that both dye and polymer undergo reversible photodegradation when irradiated with a visible laser. These findings suggest that photodegradation of 1-substituted aminoanthraquinones doped in polymers originates from interactions between dyes and photoinduced thermally degraded polymers, and the metastable product may recover or further degrade irreversibly.

Excited-State Dipole and Quadrupole Moments: TD-DFT versus CC2

The accuracies of the excited-state dipole and quadrupole moments obtained by TD-DFT are assessed by considering 16 different exchange-correlation functionals and more than 30 medium and large molecules. Except for excited-state presenting a significant charge-transfer character, a relatively limited dependency on the nature of the functional is found. It also turns out that while DFT ground-state dipole moments tend to be too large, the reverse trend is obtained for their excited-state counterparts, at least when hybrid functionals are used. Consequently, the TD-DFT excess dipole moments are often too small, an error that can be fortuitously corrected for charge-transfer transition by selecting a pure or a hybrid functional containing a small share of exact exchange. This error-cancelation phenomena explains the contradictory conclusions obtained in previous investigations. Overall, the largest correlation between CC2 and TD-DFT excess dipoles is obtained with M06-2X, but at the price of a nearly systematic underestimation of this property by ca. 1 D. For the excess quadrupole moments, the average errors are of the order of 0.2–0.6 D·Å for the set of small aromatic systems treated.
