Abstract
We report the first direct and chemoselective reductive homocoupling reaction of secondary amides and cross-coupling reaction of secondary amides with ketones. This method relies on the direct generation of α-amino carbon radicals from amides.

Vicinal diamines are important structural motifs present in various
biologically and chemically significant molecules. Direct diamination
of olefins provides an effective approach to this class of compounds.
Unlike well-established oxidation processes such as epoxidation, dihydroxylation,
and aminohydroxylation, direct diamination of olefins had remained
a long-standing challenge and had been less well developed. In this Account, we summarize our recent studies on Pd(0)- and
Cu(I)-catalyzed diaminations of olefins using di-tert-butyldiaziridinone and its related analogues as nitrogen sources
via N–N bond activation. A wide variety of imidazolidinones,
cyclic sulfamides, indolines, imidazolinones, and cyclic guanidines
can be obtained from conjugated dienes and terminal olefins. For conjugated
dienes, the diamination proceeds regioselectively at the internal
double bond with the Pd(0) catalyst. Mechanistic studies show that
the diamination likely involves a four-membered Pd(II) species resulting
from the insertion of Pd(0) into the N–N bond of di-tert-butyldiaziridinone. Interestingly, the Cu(I)-catalyzed
process occurs regioselectively at either the terminal or internal
double bond depending on the reaction conditions via two mechanistically
distinct pathways. The Cu(I) catalyst cleaves the N–N bond
of di-tert-butyldiaziridinone to form a Cu(II) nitrogen
radical and a four-membered Cu(III) species, which are likely in rapid
equilibrium. The Cu(II) nitrogen radical and the four-membered Cu(III)
species lead to the terminal and internal diamination, respectively. Terminal olefins are effectively C–H diaminated at the allylic
and homoallylic carbons with Pd(0) as catalyst and di-tert-butyldiaziridinone as nitrogen source, likely involving a diene
intermediate generated in situ from the terminal olefin via formation
of a π-allyl Pd complex and subsequent β-hydride elimination.
When di-tert-butylthiadiaziridine 1,1-dioxide is
used as nitrogen source, cyclic sulfamides are installed at the terminal
carbons via a dehydrogenative diamination process. When α-methylstyrenes
(lacking homoallylic hydrogens) react with Pd(0) and di-tert-butyldiaziridinone, spirocyclic indolines are formed with generation
of four C–N bonds and one spiro quaternary carbon via allylic
and aromatic C–H amination. With Cu(I) catalysts, various
terminal olefins can be effectively
diaminated at the double bonds using di-tert-butyldiaziridinone,
di-tert-butylthiadiaziridine 1,1-dioxide, and 1,2-di-tert-butyl-3-(cyanimino)-diaziridine as nitrogen sources,
giving a variety of imidazolidinones, cyclic sulfamides, and cyclic
guanidines in good yields, respectively. In the case of monosubstituted
olefins using di-tert-butyldiaziridinone as nitrogen
source, the resulting diamination products (imidazolidinones) are
readily dehydrogenated under the reaction conditions, leading to the
corresponding imidazolinones in good yields. Esters can also be diaminated
to form the corresponding hydantoins with di-tert-butyldiaziridinone in the presence of a Cu(I) catalyst. A radical
mechanism is likely to be operating in these Cu(I)-catalyzed reaction
processes. Asymmetric processes have also been developed for
the Pd(0)- and
Cu(I)-catalyzed diamination reactions. Biologically active compounds
such as (+)-CP-99,994 and Sch 425078 have been synthesized via the
diamination processes. The diamination reactions described herein
provide efficient methods to access a wide variety of vicinal diamines
from readily available olefins and show great potential for synthetic
applications.

Catalytic hydrogenation of (S)-α-amino-β-nitro-phosphonate 2d gives enantiopure (S)-α,β-diaminophosphonate 3.

Abstract

The synthesis of
1,2-diamines has been achieved through a single-step,
tandem sequence involving Rh-catalyzed aziridination followed by NaI-promoted
rearrangement to an isomeric cyclic sulfamide. Facile ring opening
of these products in hot water and pyridine affords differentially
protected vicinal diamines. Demonstration of the utility of this method
for the syntheses of (±)-enduracididine and (±)-allo-enduracididine
is highlighted.

Abstract
Diamination of olefins presents a powerful strategy to access vicinal diamines. During the last decade, metal-catalyzed diamination of olefins has received considerable attention. This study describes an efficient sequential diamination and dehydrogenation process of terminal olefins with CuBr as catalyst and di-tert-butyldiaziridinone as nitrogen source, providing a facile and viable approach to a variety of imidazolin-2-ones, which are important structural motifs present in various biologically active molecules.

Abstract
The design, synthesis, and development of a new class of modular, strongly basic, and tunable bifunctional Brønsted base/H-bond-donor organocatalysts are reported. These catalysts incorporate a triaryliminophosphorane as the Brønsted basic moiety and are readily synthesized via a last step Staudinger reaction of a chiral organoazide and a triarylphosphine. Their application to the first general enantioselective organocatalytic nitro-Mannich reaction of nitromethane to unactivated ketone-derived imines allows the enantioselective construction of β-nitroamines possessing a fully substituted carbon atom. The reaction is amenable to multigram scale-up, and the products are useful for the synthesis of enantiopure 1,2-diamine and α-amino acid derivatives.

Abstract
A novel Pd(0)-catalyzed sequential C-N bond formation process via allylic and aromatic C-H amination of α-methylstyrenes with di-tert-butyldiaziridinone, giving spirocyclic indolines in good yields, is described. Four C-N bonds and one spiro quaternary carbon are generated in a single operation.

Abstract
The divergent synthesis of syn-1,2-aminoalcohol or syn-1,2-diamine precursors from a common terminal olefin has been accomplished using a combination of palladium(II) catalysis with Lewis acid cocatalysis. Palladium(II)/bis-sulfoxide catalysis with a silver triflate cocatalyst leads for the first time to anti-2-aminooxazolines (C-O) in good to excellent yields. Simple removal of the bis-sulfoxide ligand from this reaction results in a complete switch in reactivity to afford anti-imidazolidinone products (C-N) in good yields and excellent diastereoselectivities. Mechanistic studies suggest the divergent C-O versus C-N reactivity from a common ambident nucleophile arises due to a switch in mechanism from allylic C-H cleavage/functionalization to olefin isomerization/oxidative amination.

Abstract
The development of an intramolecular vicinal diamination protocol using metal-free conditions is discussed. The reaction uses a bromide source to generate a Br(I) catalyst in situ from a benign terminal oxidant such as sodium chlorite. The reaction is of great scope and surpasses the transition-metal catalyses developed so far for these types of reactions.

Abstract
This paper describes the catalytic asymmetric diamination of alkyl dienes using N,N'-di-tert-butylthiadiaziridine 1,1-dioxide in the presence of Pd(0) and a chiral phosphoramidite ligand to give cyclic sulfamides in high yield and high ee. The diamination is also amenable to gram scale.

Abstract
A 1.0 mol % amount of K(3)PO(4)·3H(2)O was found to catalyze aminohalogenation reaction of nitrostyrenes with N,N-dibromo-tert-butylcarbamate (t-Boc-NBr(2)) in a dichloroethane system. Good to excellent yields and complete regioselectivity have been achieved by taking advantage of the GAP workup without using traditional purification techniques such as column chromatography and recrystallization. Anew mechanism is proposed involving radical and ionic catalytic cycles and an intramolecular migration.

Abstract
A general, high yielding method for the synthesis of 1,2-diamine derivatives is described that capitalizes on selective, rhodium-catalyzed C-H insertion of hydroxylamine-based sulfamate esters. The resulting Troc-protected oxathiadiazinane heterocycles are easily modified and can be reduced under the mild action of NaI to afford differentially substituted diamine products. This technology offers a number of salient improvements over related C-H and π-bond amination tactics for diamine synthesis.

Abstract
The 1,2-diamine moiety is a ubiquitous structural motif present in a wealth of natural products, including non-proteinogenic amino acids and numerous alkaloids, as well as in pharmaceutical agents, chiral ligands and organic reagents. The biological activity associated with many of these systems and their chemical utility in general has ensured that the development of methods for their preparation is of critical importance. While a wide range of strategies for the preparation of 1,2-diamines have been established, the diamination of alkenes offers a particularly direct and efficient means of accessing these systems. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of all methods of direct alkene diamination, metal-mediated or otherwise.
