Abstract
Di- and triporphyrin arrays consisting of 5,15-diphenylporphyrinatomagnesium(II) (MgDPP) coordinated to free-base and Ni(II) porphyrinyl mono- and bis-phosphine oxides, as well as the self-coordinating diphenyl[10,20-diphenylporphyrinatomagnesium(II)-5-yl]phosphine oxide [MgDPP(Ph(2)PO)], were synthesised in excellent yields and characterised by various spectroscopic techniques. Phosphine oxides stabilise Mg(II) coordination to porphyrins and the resulting complexes have convenient solubilities, while the Ni(II) complexes exhibit interesting intramolecular fluorescence quenching behaviour. The binding constant of MgDPP to triphenylphosphine oxide (5.3 +/- 0.1 x 10(5) M(-1)) and the very high self-association constant of [MgDPP(Ph(2)PO)] (5.5 +/- 0.5 x 10(8) M(-1)) demonstrate the strong affinity of phosphine oxides towards Mg(II) porphyrins. These complexes are the first strongly bound synthetic Mg(II) multiporphyrin complexes and could potentially mimic the "special pair" in the photosynthetic reaction centre.

Abstract
With an increasing number of folding and helical structures available, chemists have begun to pay greater attention to the functions of this family of structurally unique oligomers. Hydrogen-bonding-mediated aromatic oligoamide foldamers have the features of good structural predictability, synthetic facility, and structural modification, which make them very promising as scaffolds or platforms for supramolecular chemistry. Recent advances in the applications of this class of shape-persistent oligomers in the promoted synthesis of macrocycles, design of new nonring receptors, supramolecular self-assembly, molecular encapsulation, and reaction acceleration, are highlighted in this Focus Review.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] We have synthesized a 5,15 meso-substituted methyluracyl porphyrin derivative bearing 6-methyluracyl units directly at the meso positions. The atropisomerization was regulated by steric replusion between the methyl substituents. When the atropisomers were mixed with alkylated melamine as a complementary hydrogen-bonding unit, the hydrogen-bonded assemblies were analyzed by diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) in solution, which clarified that the alphabeta isomer formed a face-to-face dimer, whereas the alphabeta isomer took a zigzag structure.

Abstract
Photoinduced electron transfer (ET) and excitation energy transfer (ENT) reactions in monomer and slipped-cofacial dimer systems of a directly linked Zn porphyrin (Por)-Zn phthalocyanine (Pc) heterodyad, ZnPc-ZnPor, were investigated by means of the picosecond and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopies. In the dimer dyad system of two heterodyads connected through the coordination bond between two imidazolyl-substituted ZnPor bearing ZnPc, ZnPc-ZnPor(D), the rapid ENT from the ZnPor to ZnPc in the subpicosecond time region was followed by photoinduced charge separation (CS) and charge recombination (CR) with time constants of 47 and 510 ps, respectively. On the other hand in the monomer dyad system, no clear charge-separated state was observed although the CS with a time constant of 200 ps and CR with < or =70 ps were estimated. These results indicated that the dimer slipped-cofacial arrangement of pair porphyrins is advantageous for the effective production of the CS state. This advantage was discussed from the viewpoint of a decrease in the reorganization energy of the dimer relative to that of the monomer system. In addition, the electrochemical measurements indicated that the strong interaction between ZnPc and ZnPor moieties also contributed to the fast CS process despite the marginal driving force for the CS process. The dimer dyad of ZnPc-ZnPor provides full advantages in efficiencies of the light harvesting and the CS state production.

Abstract
Porphyrins play a major role as active chromophores in artificial systems mimicking the natural photoinduced processes. The formation of coordination bonds between peripheral donor sites on the porphyrins and external metal fragments has proven to be an efficient alternative to covalent synthesis for the construction of multiporphyrin assemblies, whose complexity and beauty gradually approach those of the multichromophore systems found in nature. In a modular approach, relatively simple metal-mediated porphyrin adducts, owing to their thermodynamic and kinetic stability, can be exploited as building blocks in the construction of higher order architectures. Thus, multichromophore systems become accessible on demand, with a limited synthetic effort. The collection of solid-state structures reported here demonstrates that the flexibility of the porphyrins and the metal junctions, combined with the conformational freedom of the coordination bonds, may lead to assemblies with hardly predictable architectures. Examples in which X-ray structural determination was essential for establishing the real composition and geometry of the multiporphyrin assemblies are highlighted.

Abstract
A dynamic, supramolecular, three-component A(n)B(m)C(l) bis(zinc porphyrin) tweezer has been prepared quantitatively using the heteroleptic bisphenanthroline (HETPHEN) concept. Upon addition of nitrogenous spacers of different length, namely, the extended bipyridine 3 a, 4,4'-bipyridine (3 b), and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO; 3 c), to set up an additional orthogonal binding motif (Zn(Por)-N(spacer)), three structurally different, still dynamic, four-component A(n)B(m)C(l)D(k) assemblies were cleanly formed, as indicated by UV/Vis and NMR titrations as well as by DOSY investigations. The structures were identified as a bridged monotweezer A(2)BC(2)D, a doubly bridged double tweezer A(4)B(2)C(4)D(2), and a triply bridged double tweezer A(4)B(2)C(4)D(3), the latter resembling a porphyrin stack. Notably, the same structures were equally formed directly from a mixture of the constituents A, B, C, and D put together in any sequence if the correct stoichiometry was applied.

Abstract
Imidazole-substituted metalloporphyrins are valuable for studies of self-assembly and for applications where water solubility is required. Rational syntheses of porphyrins bearing one or two imidazol-2-yl or imidazol-4-yl groups at the meso positions have been developed. The syntheses employ dipyrromethanes, 1-acyldipyrromethanes, and 1,9-diacyldipyrromethanes bearing an imidazole group at the 5-position. The polar, reactive imidazole unit was successfully masked by use of (1) the 2-(trimethylsilyl)ethoxymethyl (SEM) group at the imidazole pyrrolic nitrogen, and (2) a dialkylboron motif bound to the pyrrole of the dipyrromethane and coordinated to the imidazole imino nitrogen. The nonpolar nature of such doubly masked imidazolyl-dipyrromethanes facilitated handling. Selected masked dipyrromethanes were characterized by 11B and 15N NMR spectroscopy. Five distinct methods were examined to obtain trans-A2B2-, trans-AB2C-, and trans-AB-porphyrins. Each porphyrin contained one or two SEM-protected imidazole units. The SEM group could be removed with TBAF or HCl. Two zinc(II) porphyrins and a palladium(II) porphyrin bearing a single imidazole moiety were prepared and subjected to alkylation (with ethyl iodide, 1,3-propane sultone, or 1,4-butane sultone) to give water-soluble imidazolium- porphyrins. This work establishes the foundation for the rational synthesis of a variety of porphyrins containing imidazole units.

Abstract
The fluorescent dye 4-dimethylamino-1,8-naphthalimide was incorporated at the bay area of N,N'-bispyridyl perylene bisimide to afford a fourfold-functionalized perylene bisimide ligand. Through self-assembly directed by metal-ion coordination, a multichromophore supramolecular entity composed of sixteen dimethylaminonaphthalimide antennas and a perylene bisimide-walled square core was subsequently constructed from this linear ditopic ligand and 90 degrees metal corner [Pd(dppp)](OTf)2 (dppp=1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane; OTf=trifluoromethanesulfonate) in good yield. The isolated metallosupramolecular square was characterized by elemental analysis and 1H, 13C, and 31P{1H} NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Furthermore, by means of 1H NMR diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) the dimension of this assembly was evaluated by employing a previously reported perylene bisimide ligand and its square assembly as references. The results obtained confirm the square framework of the current assembly. The optical properties of this multichromophore dye assembly were investigated by UV/Vis and steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. It was revealed that light captured by dimethylaminonaphthalimide antennas could be efficiently transported to the perylene bisimide core by a fluorescence resonance mechanism (energy-transfer efficiency E=95%), and this resulted in almost exclusive detection of intense perylene bisimide emission, irrespective of the excitation wavelength applied. The present square scaffold containing aminonaphthalimide antenna dyes exhibits more than seven times higher fluorescence quantum yield (Phifl=0.37) than a previously reported pyrene-bearing perylene bisimide-walled square (Phifl=0.05). Thus, this multichromophore square assembly with aminonaphthalimide antenna dyes is an artificial model for the cyclic light-harvesting complexes in purple bacteria.

Abstract
Two new beta-substituted arylethynyl meso-tetraphenylporphyrins, 2-[(4'-formyl)phenyl]ethynyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (system A) and 2-[(4'-methyl)phenyl]ethynyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (system B) and their zinc derivatives were synthesized by palladium catalysis, using a synthetic approach that affords high yields of the target systems. Comparative ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), NMR, and cyclic voltammetry studies of such macrocycles reveal the presence of an extensive conjugation between the tetrapyrrolic ring and the linker, through pi-pi orbital interaction. This interaction was observed in the form of a "push-pull" effect that moves the electronic charge between the porphyrin and the aldehyde group of system A. System B, bearing a methyl group instead of the formyl group, was synthesized in order to evaluate the effect of the substitution on the charge delocalization, which is necessary to corroborate the push-pull mechanism hypothesis. The new porphyrin, system A, was also used as a starting material for the synthesis of new porphyrin-fullerene dyads in which the [60]fullerene is directly linked to the tetrapyrrolic rings by ethynylenephenylene subunits. Fluorescence and transient absorption measurements of the new dyads reveal that ultrafast energy and electron transfer occur, respectively, in nonpolar and polar solvents, with high values of the rate constant. The UV-vis, NMR, and cyclic voltammetry results show that it is possible for both energy and electron transfer between porphyrin and fullerene to take place through the pi-bond interaction. Such results evidence that the coupling between the donor and acceptor moieties is strong enough for possible photovoltaic applications.

Abstract
Static and time-resolved optical measurements are reported for two cyclic hexameric porphyrin arrays and their self-assembled complexes with guest chromophores. The hexameric hosts contain zinc porphyrins and 0 or 3 free base (Fb) porphyrins (denoted Zn(6) or Zn(3)Fb(3), respectively). The guests are a tripyridyl arene (TP) and a dipyridyl-substituted free base porphyrin (DPFb), each of which coordinates to zinc porphyrins of a host via pyridyl-zinc dative bonding. Each architecture is designed to have an overall gradient of excited-state energies that affords excitation funneling within the host and ultimately to the guest. Collectively, the studies delineate the various pathways, mechanisms, and rate constants of energy flow among the weakly coupled constituents of the host-guest complexes. The pathways include downhill unidirectional energy transfer between adjacent chromophores, bidirectional energy migration between identical chromophores, and energy transfer between nonadjacent chromophores. The energy transfer to the lowest-energy chromophore(s) within the backbone of a hexameric host (Fb porphyrins in Zn(3)Fb(3) or pyridyl-coordinated zinc porphyrins in Zn(6)*TP and Zn(6)*DPFb) proceeds primarily via a through-bond mechanism; the transfer is rapid (approximately 40 ps depending on the array) and essentially quantitative (>or=98%). The energy transfer from a pyridyl-coordinated zinc porphyrin of the host to the Fb porphyrin guest in the Zn(6)*DPFb complex is almost exclusively Förster through-space in nature; this process is much slower ( approximately 1 ns) and has a lower yield (65%). These studies highlight the utility of cyclic architectures for efficient light harvesting and energy transfer to a designated trapping site.

Energy transfer to the lowest-energy chromophore(s) (coordinated zinc porphyrins or Fb porphyrins) within a hexameric host occurs primarily via a through-bond (TB) mechanism, is rapid ( approximately 40 ps), and is essentially quantitative (>or=98%). Energy transfer from a pyridyl-coordinated zinc porphyrin of the host to the guest in the Zn(6)*DPFbO complex has a yield of approximately 75%, a rate constant of approximately (0.7 ns)(-1), and significant Förster through-space (TS) character. In the case of Zn(5)Fb*DPFbO, which has an additional TS route via the Fb porphyrin with a rate constant of approximately (20 ns)(-1), the yield of energy transfer to the guest is somewhat lower ( approximately 50%) than that for Zn(6)*DPFbO. Complex Zn(4)Fb(2)*DPFbO has an identical TS pathway via the Fb porphyrin plus an additional TS pathway involving the second Fb porphyrin (closer to the guest) with a rate constant of approximately (0.5 ns)(-1). This complex exhibits an energy-transfer yield to the guest that is significantly enhanced over that for Zn(5)Fb*DPFbO and comparable to that for Zn(6)*DPFbO. Collectively, the results for the various arrays suggest designs for similar host-guest complexes that are expected to exhibit much more efficient light harvesting and excitation trapping at the central guest chromophore.

Abstract
Nonlinear refraction and nonlinear absorption of self-assembled porphyrins in the nanosecond and picosecond regimes were studied at 532 nm by the Z-scan technique. First, a marked difference in nonlinear refraction was observed between self-assembled zinc porphyrins and free base porphyrins; however, the effects of self-assembly and metallization on nonlinear absorption are small. Second, an enhancement of nonlinear absorption was observed for the monomeric components of self-assembled structures by adding pyridine, while their nonlinear refractions remained almost unchanged as pyridine was added. It is expected that the metallization and addition of ligand can provide more convenient routes to alter the optical nonlinearities of porphyrins than the modifications of molecular structures of traditional covalent-bond organic materials.

Abstract
In noncoordinating solvents, meso-cinchomeronimide appended Zn(II) porphyrin 2 forms a cyclic trimer, while diporphyrins 7 exhibit high-fidelity self-sorting assembling to form discrete cyclic trimer, tetramer, and pentamer with large association constants from 7(in-in), 7(in)(-)(out), and 7(out-out), respectively, through almost perfect discrimination of enantiomeric and conformational differences of the meso-cinchomeronimide substituents. In the latter self-sorting processes, the dihedral angles dictated by the two pyridyl nitrogen atoms control the size of the aggregates; the trimer from 7(in-in), the tetarmer from 7(in)(-)(out), and the pentamer from 7(out-out). Cyclic structures of (2)(3) and (R-7(out-out))(5) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract
Porphyrin-based supramolecular macrocyclic arrays were synthesized as mimics of photosynthetic light-harvesting (LH) antennae. Pentameric and hexameric macrocyclic porphyrin arrays EP5 and EP6 were constructed by complementary coordination of m-bis(ethynylene)phenylene-linked zinc-imidazolylporphyrin Zn-EP-Zn. The proton NMR spectra of noncovalently linked N-EP5 and N-EP6 indicate fast rotation of the porphyrin moieties along the ethyne axis. These macrocycles were covalently linked and identified as C-EP5 (6832 Da) and C-EP6 (8199 Da) by mass spectrometry. Fluorescence quantum yields of C-EP2 (10.0%), C-EP5 (10.1%), and C-EP6 (11.0%), even larger than that of the unit coordination dimer C-EP1 (9.3%), were significantly increased from those of the series without the ethynylene linkage. The order of increasing fluorescence quantum yields was parallel to that of decreasing fluorescence lifetimes (C-EP1 (1.65 ns), C-EP2 (1.45 ns), C-EP5 (1.42 ns), and C-EP6 (1.38 ns)), indicating that the radiative decay rate kF increased relative to the other decay rates with an increase in the number of ring components. Based on the exciton-exciton annihilation and anisotropy depolarization times, the excitation energy hopping (EEH) times in these macrocyclic systems were obtained as 21 ps for C-EP5 and 12.8 ps for C-EP6. EEH times depend strongly on the orientation factor of the component transition dipoles in the macrocyclic arrays. The hexagonal macrocyclic array with an orientation of better transition dipole coupling resulted in faster EEH time compared to the pentagonal one.

Abstract
A bis(Zn(II)-porphyrin) tweezer host with anthracene components as apex and side-arms has been synthesized. Mono- (pyridine) and bidentate (4,4'-bipyridine) guests were used as models for single and double axial coordination inside the cavity, respectively. A series of dipyridylporphyrin guests with different substitution patterns and excited-state energy levels have association constants with the tweezers that are of the order of 10(6) M(-1), which is indicative of complexation with the inside of the cavity. This complexation can only occur upon an important distortion of the cavity that opens the bite by about 30 %. This characteristic, in conjunction with their ability to reduce the bite distance by rotation around single bonds, makes these porphyrin tweezers amongst the most versatile so far reported, with tuning of the bite distance in the range of approximately 5-20 Angstroms. Energy transfer to the free-base guest within the triporphyrin complex is nearly quantitative (95-98 %) and the rates of transfer are consistent with a Förster mechanism that is characterized by a reduced orientation factor.

Abstract
Carbaporphyrinoids provide a suitable macrocyclic platform for organometallic investigations providing unique capabilities for reversible modifications of a macrocyclic structure. Alteration of a coordination core is the route of choice for stabilizing unusual metal ion oxidation states and coordination geometries. This concise review presents the general characteristic of carbaporphyrinoid focusing, however, on oxaporphyrin derivatives. Incorporation of a furan ring into a porphyrin frame results in the formation of 21-oxaporphyrin or its O-confused counterpart. This particular couple, constructed applying the O-confusion concept, was selected to illustrate the developments in the field of carbaporphyrinoids. The coordination chemistry in the O-confused porphyrin surrounding takes advantage of the unique set of four meridional donor atoms (CNNN) constrained in the regular porphyrin-like framework. The subtle interplay between their structural flexibility, perimeter substitution, coordination, and aromaticity was detected for oxacarbaporphyrinoids. The oxidation state of a central metal ion is a factor, which determines the ligand molecular structure. The adjacency of the metal and carbon atom provides the unprecedented route for activation of the carbocyclic moiety, which is built into a metalloporphyrin-like structure. The perspectives of the field have also been briefly discussed including feasible applications as a new class of building blocks applied to control both the architecture and electronic properties of oligoporphyrinic nanostructures.

Abstract
This paper describes the self-assembly of a new class of foldamer-based molecular tweezers, whose rigid folded conformations are stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Two zinc porphyrin units are introduced to the ends of molecular tweezers Zn(2)1 and Zn(2)2, while three zinc porphyrin units are incorporated to the S-shaped bi-tweezers Zn(3)3, which may be regarded as a combination of two Zn(2)1 molecules. Due to the preorganized U-shaped feature, Zn(2)1 and Zn(2)2 are able to strongly complex C60, C70, and C60 derivative 25 in chloroform or toluene in a 1:1 binding stoichiometry, whereas Zn(3)3, which possesses two tweezer units, complexes the guests in a 1:2 stoichiometry. More stable complex Zn(3)3.24 is formed between Zn(3)3 and 24, a linear molecule bearing two C60 moieties at the ends, as a result of the cooperative interaction of two binding sites. Chiral induction is observed for all the three receptors upon complexation with C60-incoporated chiral phenylalanine derivative 29, although the complexation of 29 by the folding receptors is pronouncedly weaker than that of C60 and 25 due to increased steric hindrance. The driving force for the formation of the complexes is the well established pi-pi stacking between the zinc porphyrin and fullerene units. The 1H and 13C NMR, UV-vis, fluorescent, and circular dichroism spectroscopy have been used to investigate the complexing behavior of the folding receptors and the fullerene guests. The association constants of the corresponding complexes in toluene and chloroform (if possible) have been evaluated with the UV-vis and fluorescent titration experiments.

Abstract
[structure: see text] We prepared a zinc complex of bis(1-methylimidazolyl)-m-gable porphyrin. The automatically assembled coordinate species showed a complex mixture of wide molecular weight distributions accompanied with assemblies of specific assembly numbers. When this zinc complex was once dissociated by the addition of methanol and reorganized again by elimination of the methanol under high-dilution conditions in chloroform to facilitate intramolecular coordinate structure formation, two convergent assemblies were obtained through analysis by gel permeation chromatography. These assemblies gave round-shaped particles on solid substrates by probe microscopies (atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopies). These two components were separated by GPC and evidence from small-angle X-ray scattering measurements in solution with synchrotron radiation was consistent with hexameric and pentameric macrorings of the gable porphyrin. The porphyrin macrorings did not show any fluorescence quenching by assembly formation, and we anticipate that the macrorings of gable porphyrins represent a good model for an artificial light-harvesting complex.

Abstract
Ferrocene-bridged bisporphyrins have been synthesized by the condensation of corresponding dipyrromethane-derived diols with a bisdipyrromethane. Purification of the final compounds has been achieved without chromatography. The specific geometry of these bisporphyrins makes them valuable starting points for building complex molecular and supramolecular structures. In particular it provides a core to which multiple sites of attractive intermolecular interactions can be attached thereby creating compounds predisposed to form complex networks by association. We have studied the structure of bis-1,1'-(porphyrinyl)ferrocenes by 1H NMR, UV-Vis and electrochemistry. Results have shown that complex dynamic processes occur in these molecules (which may involve conformers, formation of H-aggregates and tautomers) and that they have non-typical electrochemical behaviour.
