Abstract
Predictable esthetic root coverage has evolved into conventional treatment modalities making cosmetic procedures an integral part of periodontal treatment. The advent of second-generation platelet concentrates, i.e., platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), has broad clinical application in medical as well as dental field with its recent use for recession defects. The simplicity of PRF procurement and its low cost makes it most suitable for use in daily clinical practice. This particular case report foregrounds the benefit of PRF membrane along with coronally repositioned flap for mucogingival surgery on the labial surface of an upper anterior tooth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Platelets are cells that play a central role in wound healing, and they are the main source of the growth factor complex that plays the main role in natural wound healing. It is aimed to present the beneficial effects of topical application of PRF on chronic ulcers that do not respond to standard wound care in cases of chronic ulcers that require a long treatment process and high costs. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 16 patients between the dates of January 2017 and September 2019. The study was approved by the local ethics board and planned retrospectively. RESULTS The mean number of PRF applications in the patients was 4.37 (range: 1-8), while the wounds of 10 patients were completely closed up to the mean number of applications, and at least 50% of the wounds of 4 patients were closed up to the mean number of applications. DISCUSSION Choukroun's platelet-rich fibrin may be considered as a 2nd-generation platelet concentration. Its preparation protocol is reported to be highly simple and low-cost. CONCLUSION PRF is a safe, practical, easy to use adjuvant treatment method which has a potential for closing chronic wounds.

Abstract
Here, we fabricated the platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)-loaded PCL/chitosan (PCL/CS-PRF) core-shell nanofibrous scaffold through a coaxial electrospinning method. Our goal was to evaluate the effect of CS-RPF in the core layer of the nanofibrous on the osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (HMSCs). The elastic modulus of PCL/CS-PRF core-shell scaffold (44 MPa) was about 1.5-fold of PCL/CS scaffold (25 MPa). The specific surface area of the scaffolds increased from 9.98 m2/g for PCL/CS scaffold to 16.66 m2/g for the PCL/CS-PRF core-shell nanofibrous scaffold. Moreover, the release rate of PRF from PCL/CS-PRF nanofibrous scaffold was measured to be 24.50% after 10 days which showed slow and sustained release of PRF from the nanofibrous. The formation of Ca-P on the surface of scaffold immersed in simulated body fluid solution indicated the suitable osteoconductivity of PCL/CS-PRF core-shell nanofibrous scaffold. Also, the value of ALP activity and calcium deposited on the surface of PCL/CS-PRF core-shell nanofibrous scaffold were 81.97 U/L and 40.33 μg/scaffold, respectively after 14 days, which confirmed the significantly higher amounts of ALP and calcium deposition on the scaffold containing PRF compared to PCL/CS scaffold. Due to higher hydrophilicity and porosity of PCL/CS-PRF core-shell nanofibrous scaffold compared to PCL/CS scaffold, a better bone cell growth on surface of PCL/CS-PRF scaffold was observed. The Alizarin red-positive area was significantly higher on PCL/CS-PRF scaffold compared to PCL/CS scaffold, indicating more calcium deposition and osteogenic differentiation of HMSCs in the presence of PRF. Our findings demonstrate that PCL/CS-PRF core-shell scaffolds can provide a strong construct with improved osteogenic for bone tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Introduction Nonunions remain a significant burden in orthopedics, often afflicting young males of working age. Positive findings have been published using bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) for the treatment augmentation of lower limb nonunions. The aim of this study was to investigate if the treatment augmentation with BMAC and PRF can also accelerate the healing of nonunions of the upper limb. Materials and methods Sixty-eight patients (45 men, 23 women) affected by 75 nonunions of long bones of the upper limb were treated and divided into two groups. The first series was treated with standard surgery alone (group A); afterwards, the second series benefited from standard surgery with the addition of BMAC and PRF applied on lyophilized bone chips. Nonunions were classified radiographically according to the Weber–Cech method and prognostically using the Calori and Moghaddam scores. All patients were radiographically assessed at 1.5, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months of follow-up. Results Baseline demographic characteristics did not present differences between groups. No differences were documented in terms of complications (two in group A and three in group B). Significant differences were instead documented in terms of healing time. The first healing signs were observed 1.5 months after surgery in 90.7% of patients in group B and 34.4% of group A (p < 0.0005). At 1.5, 3, 6, and 12 months, a higher radiographic score was found for group B (all p < 0.0005), while no difference was found at final follow-up of 24 months (90.6% of group A and 97.7% of group B achieved radiological healing). Faster healing with BMAC/PRF augmentation was confirmed for all bones, as well as for the subgroup of patients affected by atrophic nonunions (p = 0.001). Conclusion This study showed the benefits of restoring both mechanical and biological aspects when addressing nonunions of the long bones of the upper limb. In particular, the association of BMAC and PRF to lyophilized bone chips was safe and able to accelerate healing time. These good results were confirmed for humerus, radius, and ulna sites, as well as for challenging atrophic nonunions of the upper limb.

Abstract
During the last two decades autologous platelet and leukocyte rich products (PRP; PRF), opened new perspectives in regenerative medicine. In particular regenerative dentistry played a pioneer role in the application of these products in bone regenerative cases. Many aspects of cytokines, such as, growth factor release, blood cell content and its characterization were reported, but some practical questions are still unanswered in the preparation of PRF membranes and sticky bones. A new folding technique was introduced that created a good quality, pliable, and strong F-PRF membrane with a dense fibrin network and more homogenous blood cell distribution. F-PRF produced a very promising sticky bone combined with human freeze-dried cortical bone matrix gelatin (BMG). There hasn’t been much focus on the quality and character of the applied bone and the optimal membrane/bone particle ratio has not been reported. A 0.125 g BMG/ml plasma (1 g/8 ml) seems like the ideal combination with maximal BMG adhesion capacity of the membrane. Particle distribution of BMG showed that 3/4 of the particles ranged between 300–1000 µ, the remnant 1/4 was smaller than 300 µ. The whole F-PRF membrane and its parts were compared with conventional A-PRF membrane concerning their resistance against proteolytic digestion. The F-PRF was superior to A-PRF, which dissolved within 4–5 days, while F-PRF was destroyed only after 11 days, so this provides a better chance for local bone morphogenesis. The F-PRF pieces had similar resistance to the whole intact one, so they can be ideal for surgical procedures without risk of fast disintegration.

Abstract
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) promotes wound healing by providing the release of growth factors. Here, the influence of Thai and Murrah bubaline blood derived PRF on canine periodontal ligament cells (cPDLs) was investigated. PRF was prepared from Thai and Murrah buffaloes with single centrifugation. Results demonstrated that Thai bubaline blood derived PRF exhibited fiber-mesh like morphology and contained more platelet entrapment than Murrah bubaline blood derived PRF. Both bubaline PRFs were able to degrade in vitro under condition with trypsin. Thai but not Murrah bubaline blood derived PRF promoted cPDLs proliferation in serum free and 2% serum culture conditions. Correspondingly, the significant upregulation of KI67 mRNA expression was observed in those cells treated with Thai bubaline blood derived PRF. However, both Thai and Murrah bubaline blood derived PRF accelerated cell migration in an in vitro wound healing assay and facilitated cell spreading. Further, cPDLs cultured in osteogenic induction medium supplemented with Thai bubaline blood derived PRF exhibited the increased mineral deposition in vitro. Frozen Thai bubaline blood derived PRF also promoted cell proliferation, KI67 mRNA expression, cell migration, and cell spreading in cPDLs. Taken these evidence together, bubaline blood derived PRF could provide potential benefits for canine periodontal tissue healing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Complications after free gingival graft (FGG) operations are generally related to the donor site. The titanium-prepared, platelet-rich fibrin (T-PRF) placement in the donor site accelerate the wound healing and prevent postoperative complications such as pain and hemorrhage. We aim to evaluate the effect of T-PRF regarding vascularization and tissue thickness and to report the advantages of the ultrasonography (US) in FGG. METHODS Ten individuals were divided into two groups as T-PRF and control. While the T-PRF membrane was placed at the donor site in the T-PRF group, a gelatin sponge was placed in the control group. All patients underwent US examination in terms of vascularization and tissue thickness of left and right donor sites. The correlation between the right and left donor sites was analyzed with the Pearson correlation test. Tissue thicknesses and pulsatility index (PI) were analyzed with independent samples t-test. The results were evaluated statistically at the P <0.05 significance level. RESULTS The T-PRF group showed increased vascularity which can be interpreted to improve healing in soft tissue. However, not a difference, but a positively very high correlation was observed between the right and left tissue thicknesses (P = 0,00; r = +0902). CONCLUSIONS Evaluation of tissue thickness and vascularization density of donor sites with US not only increases clinical success rate but also reduces the risk of complications during surgery and postoperative pain in FGG. Studies evaluating T-PRF membrane as palatal dressing after FGG are only clinical, however, the efficiency of T-PRF was evaluated radiologically in this study for the first time.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membranes obtained using a conventional method and those obtained using the tranexamic acid-mixed method at various concentrations in terms of appearance, weight, and degradation period. In this in vitro study, 20 PRF membranes were divided into four groups, including a conventional group manipulated using the conventional method. The remaining groups were prepared using tranexamic acid at concentrations of 50, 150, and 200 mg. The PRF membranes were evaluated for gross weight, degradation period, and daily remaining weight for 28 days. There were no statistically significant differences in gross weight among all the groups (p = 0.985). The 150 and 200 mg groups had a longer degradation period (more than 28 days), which was significantly longer than that of the control and 50 mg groups (p = 0.048). The daily remaining weights of the 150 and 200 mg groups were significantly greater than that of the control group observed from day 13 to the end of the experiment. The tranexamic acid-mixed technique had no effect on the appearance and weight of the PRF membranes. Moreover, the technique could delay their degradation.

Guided bone regeneration simultaneous with implant placement using bovine-derived xenograft with and without liquid platelet-rich fibrin: a randomized controlled clinical trial. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess augmentation success after guided bone regeneration (GBR) carried out simultaneously with implant placement using bovine-derived xenograft alone and in combination with liquid platelet-rich fibrin (liquid-PRF). METHODS This randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted on patients with horizontal bone deficiency in the posterior regions of the mandible. After implant placement, GBR procedures were randomly performed using liquid-PRF-enriched bovine-derived xenograft (for the test group) and with bovine-derived xenograft alone (for the control group). To assess the change in augmentation thickness, the primary outcome of the study, cone beam computed tomography was carried out at the implant sites on completion and 6 months after surgery. The secondary outcomes were marginal bone level and implant survival rate at prosthetic delivery and at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years follow-up after loading. The significance level was set at p<0.05 for all analysis. RESULTS Twenty patients with 50 implants were analyzed for the test group and 20 patients with 48 implants for the control group. At 6 months postoperatively, the mean values of augmentation thickness were 1.63 ± 0.21 mm, 2.59 ± 0.34 mm, and 3.11 ± 0.36 mm for the test group and 1.34 ± 0.14 mm, 2.49 ± 0.24 mm, and 2.97 ± 0.24 mm for the control group at 2 mm, 4 mm, and 6 mm below to the implant shoulder (p < 0.001, p = 0.007, and p = 0.036, respectively). The mean marginal bone loss was found to be less than 1 mm for both study groups during the 2 years of follow-up after prosthetic loading. Implant survival rate was 100% for both study groups. CONCLUSION Bovine-derived xenograft alone and in combination with liquid-PRF are both successful in achieving bone augmentation around the implants and produce a small change in marginal bone level and a high implant survival rate after loading. CLINICAL RELEVANCE There is a lack of evidence in the literature regarding the augmentation success of liquid-PRF used in combination with bone graft substitutes. This study indicates that liquid-PRF could be used as a supportive material with bovine-derived xenograft in GBR procedures carried out simultaneously with implant placement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficiency of injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) in accelerating canine tooth movement and to examine levels of the matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells ligand (RANKL), and osteoprotegerin (OPG) in the gingival crevicular fluid during orthodontic treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty patients (mean age = 21.4 ± 2.9 years) with Class II Division 1 malocclusion were included in a split-mouth study. The treatment plan for all patients was extraction of maxillary first premolars followed by canine distalization with closed-coil springs using 150 g of force on each side. The study group received i-PRF two times, with a 2-week interval, on one side of the maxilla. The contralateral side served as the control and did not receive i-PRF. Maxillary canine tooth movement was measured at five time points (T1-T5) on each side. Also, the activity of inflammatory cytokines was evaluated at three time points in the gingival crevicular fluid samples. RESULTS There was a significant difference in canine tooth movement between the two groups (P < .001). i-PRF significantly increased the rate of tooth movement, and stimulation in the levels of inflammatory cytokines supported this result (P < .001). The levels of cytokines changed in both groups between T1 and T2. The IL-1β, MMP8, and RANKL values were significantly increased in the study group compared with the control group, while the OPG values were significantly decreased. CONCLUSIONS i-PRF-facilitated orthodontics is an effective and safe treatment modality to accelerate tooth movement, and this method can help shorten orthodontic treatment duration.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of obesity has increased substantially in the last few decades. World Health Organization (2020) estimated that around 600 million obese adults worldwide were obese, and a further increase is expected in the future due to increased consumption of high-calorie diets and a sedentary lifestyle as per the evidence. Aim To evaluate and compare the level of fibroblast growth factor platelet rich fibrin (A-PRF) in obese subject compare to healthy weight subject. Methods Blood samples were collected from 23 volunteers, 15 obese subject (test group) and 8 non-obese (control group) at Riyadh Elm University. Considering the smaller sample size of our study, the results are to cautiously be interpreted for generalizability. Studies employing larger sample size are recommended to overcome this point. But considering the meticulous study procedure adhering to the study protocol and set criteria, the study pronounces greater internal validity in the sample chosen. The medical, dental histories, an interview and clinical examination was performed to check the eligibility of the participants to be involved in this study, Blood sample was collected in 10 ml syringe, then being processed using A-PRF centrifugation protocols. Ten milliliters of whole blood without anticoagulant was centrifuged at 1,300 rpm for 14 minutes. Results The level of FGF-2 released from (A-PRF) concentration was significantly lower on obese which was measured on 4 different times (day 1, day 7, day 14 and day 28), compared to healthy. Conclusions There was decrease in FGF-2 level released from (A-PRF) from obese compared to healthy.

Abstract
Growth factors (GFs) play a vital role in cell proliferation, migration, differentiation and angiogenesis. Autologous platelet concentrates (APCs) which contain high levels of GFs make them especially suitable for periodontal regeneration and facial rejuvenation. The main generations of APCs presented are platelet-rich plasma (PRP), platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and concentrated growth factor (CGF) techniques. The purpose of this review is to provide the clinician with an overview of APCs' evolution over the past decade in order to give reliable and useful information to be used in clinical work. This review summarizes the most interesting and novel articles published between 1997 and 2020. Electronic and manual searches were conducted in the following databases: Pubmed, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Embase. The following keywords were used: growth factors, VEGF, TGF-b1, PRP, PRF, CGF and periodontal regeneration and/or facial rejuvenation. A total of 73 articles were finally included. The review then addresses the uses of the three different techniques in the two disciplines, as well as the advantages and limitations of each technique. Overall, PRP is mainly used in cases of hard and soft tissue procedures, while PRF is used in gingival recession and the treatment of furcation and intrabony defects; CGF is mainly used in bone regeneration.

Abstract
Gingival recession (GR) can cause aesthetic and functional problems. Using connective tissue graft (CTG) and coronally advanced flap (CAF) is considered the technique of choice for treating GR. Considering the morbidity resulting from taking CTG, different alternative biomaterials have been described, including plasma-rich fibrin (PRF) membrane. Studies in lower teeth are few because of the complexity of the factors that can influence obtaining less predictable outcomes. Objective. To compare between CAF + PRF and CAF + CTG in the treatment of lower teeth Miller I gingival recession. Methodology. Split-mouth included 26 isolated GR (13 in each side of the mouth). The left side was treated with CAF + PRF and the right side with CAF + CTG. Clinical variables, probing depth (PD), GR, keratinized tissue (KT), vestibular soft tissue thickness (VSTT), and teeth sensitivity (TS), were assessed at the baseline. GR, KT, VSTT, extraoral inflammation (EI), and patient discomfort (PaD) were assessed at 45 days. Results. Statistically greater VSTT at 45 days was obtained using CAF + CTG (p < 0.05). Less EI and PaD were obtained using CAF + PRF (p < 0.05). No change was observed in GR, KT, and TS values in the intergroup or intragroup comparisons. Conclusion. Even with the limitations of this study, using PRF and CTG in lower teeth demonstrated an improvement in terms of root coverage, although it was without a total percentage of coverage. Regarding the VSTT, better results were obtained using the CTG + CAF, suggesting eventually long-term stable clinical results. We suggest a combined technique for future investigations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A systematic review (SR) was conducted to answer the following focused question based on PICO strategy: In patients who were submitted to harvesting palatal free gingival graft, could platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) application in comparison with another method improve the healing, pain, and control of postoperative bleeding in the palatal area in randomized clinical trials? METHODS A SR was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. The MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched, and hand searches were made, covering the period up to August 2020, for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) reporting the effect of PRF membrane in postoperative palatal healing management compared with any other methods. The risk of bias (RoB) of the studies included was assessed by using the RoB 2 tool. RESULTS The electronic search strategy identified 150 articles. After title screening and abstract reading, 141 studies were excluded, and 9 full-text publications were comprehensively evaluated. Finally, 8 articles were included in the systematic review. Six studies showed that the PRF membrane was effective in improving wound healing during the first 2 weeks. As regards patient-centered outcomes, five studies showed that PRF promoted less postoperative pain. Finally, five studies that evaluated bleeding showed that the PRF membrane improved control of postoperative bleeding. RoB was classified as low in 4 studies, 3 with some concerns, and only one study did not describe the outcome data, and as this was missing, it was not possible to verify the protocol of data analysis for this study; therefore, it was classified as having high RoB. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this study, the collective evidence emerging from this SR may support the use of PRF membrane in the palatal area after free gingival graft harvesting. The results of this review must be interpreted with caution, due to the low number of RCTs included and high degree of heterogeneity among the PRF protocols. Further well-designed RCTs with accurate protocol and standard PRF parameters are required in order to gain clear understanding of the influence of PRF on wound healing and patient-centered outcomes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The use of PRF membrane for the protection of the palatal donor site following free gingival graft harvesting procedures improves wound healing and patients' quality of life.

Abstract
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) represents second generation of platelet concentrates, which has gained increasing awareness in recent years for regenerative procedures. This biologic additive is completely autologous, easy to prepare, has minimal expense, and possesses prolonged growth factor release, together with several other advantages over traditionally prepared platelet concentrates. Since its introduction, various protocols for PRF preparation have been proposed with different amounts of growth factors and other biomolecules necessary for wound healing. However, reference data about potential effect of some PRF components on hard and soft tissue healing are still conflicting. The current article intends to clarify the relevant advances about physiological role of certain PRF components and to provide insight into the new developmental approach. Also, this review summarizes the evolution of platelet concentrates and biologic properties of different modifications of PRF procedure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the clinical scenario, adult patients with periodontal diseases and dental malformation, characterized by dental crowding in lower anterior teeth with the thin biotype, often require orthodontic treatment. This case report aimed to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) combined with autologous platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in an adult patient with class I malocclusion along with dental crowding, a thin periodontal biotype, and buccal plate deficiency.
CASE SUMMARY A 32-year-old female complaining of dental crowding and gingival bleeding was referred to the orthodontic clinic. The patient underwent periodontal risk assessment prior to orthodontic treatment. She was diagnosed with a high risk of gingival recession due to dental crowding, root prominence, loss of buccal plates, and a thin gingival tissue biotype. The treatment regimen included PAOO combined with autologous PRF for alveolar augmentation and interproximal enamel reduction for moderate dental crowding. Clinically, PAOO-assisted orthodontic tooth movement in this case showed enhanced periodontium remodeling. Radiographic outcomes also showed statistically significant improvements (P < 0.01) in the mandibular buccal alveolar bone.
CONCLUSION This case report suggests the combination of autologous PRF with PAOO to enhance bone augmentation and long-term tissue support in adult orthodontic patients with periodontal disease.

Abstract
Background Lack of collateral blood supply and the low compliance environment of pulp makes its healing, a challenge. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a primary angiogenic growth factor. Knowledge of dose and time-dependent expression of VEGF from platelet concentrates, namely platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and PRF matrix (PRFM), along with vital pulp can aid in developing strategies to improve the outcome of vital pulp therapy and regenerative procedures. Hence, the aim of this study was to compare VEGF kinetics of PRF, PRFM, and dental pulp. Materials and Methods The PRF, PRFM, and vital dental pulp were placed in culture media for a week; the supernatant was collected from these samples at days 1, 4, and 7. VEGF-A expression was evaluated using ELISA and compared with the weight of the sample so as to quantify the release of VEGF-A per milligram of sample. Results PRF exhibited maximum VEGF-A release on day 4 and was sustained till day 7. In contrast, PRFM and dental pulp showed no significant release of VEGF-A till day 7. However, on day 7, there was a rapid increase in VEGF-A expression from dental pulp that was comparable to PRF. On comparing the release of VEGF-A per milligram of tissue, pulp exhibited the maximum values. Conclusion Among the platelet concentrates, differential expression of VEGF-A was superior in PRF. The use of PRF in partial pulpitis should be explored in order to restore pulp vascularity and hasten pulpal healing.

Abstract
Objectives: Bone remodeling after tooth extraction results in decreased ridge volume and complicates implant placement. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a rich source of autogenous cytokines and growth factors; it has been proven to effectively improve soft tissue healing and hard tissue regeneration. This study sought to compare the clinical application of freeze-dried bone allografts (FDBA) and PRF for alveolar ridge preservation after tooth extraction. Materials and Methods: This clinical trial was conducted on 32 patients presenting for the extraction of hopeless non-molar teeth. The teeth were extracted with minimal trauma, and the samples were randomly divided into two groups (n=16). Tooth sockets were filled with either FDBA or PRF (prepared using 10cc of the patient’s blood). Bone regeneration was assessed by evaluating changes in horizontal and vertical bone dimensions after 12 weeks (the time of implant placement) using an acrylic stent fabricated before tooth extraction and a periodontal probe. The results were compared by repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA; P<0.05). Results: Ridge width showed a significant reduction compared to the baseline in both groups (P=0.001); ridge height changes were not significant (P>0.05). The evaluated groups did not show any significant difference in height/width changes (P>0.05). Conclusion: The results showed an acceptable efficacy for PRF without graft materials in alveolar ridge preservation. This material is cost-effective and could be easily prepared. PRF application in extraction sockets yielded similar results to FDBA.

Abstract
Purpose To compare the survival and clinical performance of implants placed in sites previously augmented with autogenous bone grafts covered by either a platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membrane (PRF group) or a standard procedure (gold standard) involving coverage of the autogenous bone graft with deproteinised bovine bone mineral and a resorbable collagen membrane (control group). Methods A total of 27 partially edentulous patients (test n = 14, control n = 13) with indication for staged lateral bone block augmentation and dental implant placement were included. Twenty-four months after crown placement (range: 14–32 months), patients were recalled for a final clinical and radiographic follow-up. Outcome measures were implant survival, implant crown survival, clinical parameters of the implant, peri-implant marginal bone level, marginal bone level of adjacent tooth surfaces, biological and technical complications and patient-related outcome measures. Results Two implants were lost in the control group (85% survival rate); none were lost in the PRF group (100% survival rate). None of the 26 initially placed implant crowns were lost, but one implant and therefore one implant crown were lost after 20 months. Consequently, the definitive implant crown survival was 92% (95% confidence interval (CI): 73–110%) in the control group and 100% in the PRF group. No statistical difference in implant survival rate (p = 0.13) or implant crown survival was seen between the groups (p = 0.28). The mean marginal bone level at the follow-up was 0.26 mm (95% CI: 0.01–0.50 mm) in the PRF group and 0.68 mm (95% CI: 0.41–0.96 mm) in the control group. The difference between the groups was − 0.43 mm (95% CI: − 0.80 to − 0.05 mm, p = 0.03), which was statistically significant (p = 0.03). Both groups demonstrated similar healthy peri-implant soft tissue values at the final follow-up. Conclusion Although the current study is based on a small sample of participants, the findings suggest that the methodology of the PRF and the control group approach can both be used for bone augmentation with a similar outcome. A significant, but clinically irrelevant, higher peri-implant marginal bone level was registered in the PRF group than in the control group. Abstract
This prospective randomised clinical study aims to evaluate different treatments in patients with temporomandibular disorder. Control group (C) patients underwent arthrocentesis and experimental group (E) patients underwent injectable platelet-rich fibrin (İ-PRF) in addition to arthrocentesis. Helkimo Clinical Dysfunction Score (HCDS) examinations and VAS scores of the patients were recorded at the end of the 10th day, 1 month and 3 months. 36 patients (17 females, 19 males), 18 in the experimental and 18 in the control group, aged between 18 and 64 years and in groups 3, 4 and 5 according to Wilke's classification were included in this study. Improvement of VAS (E mean: 5,83, E standard deviation: 2,550, C mean: 2,94, C standard deviation: 2,043, p<0.001) and HCDS (E mean: 13,61, E standard deviation: 5,158, C mean: 9,22, C standard deviation: 6,916, p:0.039) of the experimental group patients was significantly higher than control group at the end of the third month. As a result of this study, the combination of i-PRF with arthrocentesis gave a much better outcome than arthrocentesis alone. Additional PRF injection should be preferred for severe dysfunction. Further studies with long-term follow-up are needed to better understand the effects of i-PRF.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the efficacy of leukocyte–platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) in addition to coronally advanced flap (CAF) for the treatment of both single and multiple gingival recessions (GRs) compared to the CAF alone and to the adjunct of connective tissue graft (CTG). Root coverage outcomes using platelet concentrates have gained increased interest. In particular, it has been suggested that adding L-PRF to CAF may provide further benefits in the treatment of GRs. Materials and Methods: An electronic and manual literature search was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials (RTCs) investigating root coverage outcomes with CAF + L-PRF. The outcomes of interest included mean root coverage (mRC), recession reduction, keratinized tissue width (KTW) gain, gingival thickness (GT) gain, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROms) such as pain perception and discomfort. Results: A total of 275 patients and 611 surgical sites were analyzed. L-PRF in adjunct to single CAF seems to show statistically significant results regarding clinical attachment level (CAL) with a weighted means (WM) 0.43 95% CI (−0.04, 0.91), p < 0.0001, GT (WM 0.17 95% CI (−0.02, 0.36), p < 0.0001, and mRC (WM 13.95 95% CI (−1.99, 29.88) p < 0.0001, compared to single CAF alone. Interesting results were obtained from the adjunct of PRF to multiple CAF with respect to multiple CAF alone with an increase in the mRC WM 0.07 95% CI (−30.22, 30.35), p = 0.0001, and PPD change WM 0.26 95% CI (−0.06, 0.58), p < 00001. On the other hand, no statistically significant data were obtained when L-PRF was added to single or multiple CAF combined with CTG according to the included outcomes such as mRC (p = 0.03 overall). Conclusions: L-PRF is a valid alternative to CAF alone. L-PRF compared to CTG in single and multiple CAF showed statistically significant results regarding pain perception and discomfort PROms (p < 0.0001). However, CTG remains the gold standard for treating gingival recession.

Abstract
Objective: The use of platelet concentrates (PCs) in oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontology, and craniofacial surgery has been reported. While PCs provide a rich reservoir of autologous bioactive growth factors for tissue regeneration, their drawbacks include lack of utility for long-term application, low elastic modulus and strength, and limited storage capability. These issues restrict their broader application. This review focuses on the lyophilization of PCs (LPCs) and how this processing approach affects their biological and mechanical properties for application as a bioactive scaffold for craniofacial tissue regeneration. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive search of five electronic databases, including Medline, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus, was conducted from 1946 until 2019 using a combination of search terms relating to this topic. Results: Ten manuscripts were identified as being relevant. The use of LPCs was mostly studied in in vitro and in vivo craniofacial bone regeneration models. Notably, one clinical study reported the utility of LPCs for guided bone regeneration prior to dental implant placement. Conclusions: Lyophilization can enhance the inherent characteristics of PCs and extends shelf-life, enable their use in emergency surgery, and improve storage and transportation capabilities. In light of this, further preclinical studies and clinical trials are required, as LPCs offer a potential approach for clinical application in craniofacial tissue regeneration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), an autogenous blood concentrate, contains multiple growth factors and is used as an adjunct in the periodontal regeneration and implant site development procedures to stimulate wound healing. Patient-related factors such as chronic periodontitis may affect the quality of PRF. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate and compare PRF's effects from patients diagnosed with generalized moderate or severe chronic periodontitis to patients who presented with intact periodontium on human gingival fibroblast (HGF) and human periodontal ligament fibroblast (HPLF) proliferation. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 33 ml of whole intravenous blood was collected from each subject and centrifuged at 2700 rpm for 12 min in three 10 ml tubes, and 3 ml of blood was used for Complete Blood Count analysis. Three PRF clots were compressed to produce the membranes and liquid exudate. PRF membrane and 10% liquid exudate were exposed to 20,000 HPLFs/well or 25,000 HGFs/well in triplets from each subject in a 48 cell well plate. After 72 h of incubation, the conditioned media were evaluated by Water Soluble Tetrazolium-1 assays to determine fibroblast proliferation. Controls included cells alone and media without cells. Complete blood counts were measured. RESULTS Subjects in both groups were age and gender-matched (intact 46.7 ± 11.4 years and periodontitis 54.8 ± 10.4 years, p-value = 0.1344). Body Mass Index and White Blood Corpuscles in the periodontitis group was significantly higher than the intact group (p = 0.0176 and p = 0.0038) whereas no differences were seen for Red Blood Corpuscles (p = 0.2020), Hemoglobin (p = 0.2290) and Platelets (p = 4,094). There were no significant differences in the HGF and HPLF proliferation with PRF exudates and membranes between intact periodontium and periodontitis groups (all p > 0.05). However, PRF exudates in both groups induced significant more cell proliferation when compared to PRF membranes. CONCLUSIONS PRF exudates induced significant proliferation of fibroblasts and can play a vital role in wound healing. The current study concluded that PRF membranes, in combination with PRF exudates, can be utilized for their therapeutic and wound healing potential, not affected by the periodontal condition of the patient.

Abstract
Autologous growth factor (AGF) is a cytokine that has gained medical research interest because it helps improve and accelerate the wound healing process. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is the latest generation of platelet concentrate that can be obtained through a simple procedure known as AGF referencing. One of the most common complications of total laryngectomy (TL) is pharyngocutaneous fistula. To prevent this complication, health care providers must closely monitor the postoperative wound healing process.This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of PRF application in enhancing wound healing after TL. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia, from June 2019 to December 2019. We included 20 patients who underwent TL for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. They were divided into two groups (10 patients who received applied autologous PRF around the esophageal stoma during TL and another 10 patients as the control). These patients were observed for 2 weeks postoperatively. In the bivariate analysis performed using the chi-square test, the pain threshold and edema of postoperative wounds in the PRF-treated group demonstrated significant differences compared with those in the control group. PRF application in TL enhanced the postoperative wound healing process, especially with regard to edema and pain.

Abstract
Objective: To compare the effects of leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT)-applied L-PRF (PBMT/L-PRF) as barrier membranes on new bone formation (BV/TV) for the treatment of critical-sized bone defects. Materials and methods: The right iliac crests of five sheep were used in this experimental animal study. Eight critical-sized defects were surgically created in each sheep and a total of 40 defects were obtained. A deproteinized bovine bone graft was placed in all defects, and the defects were divided into four groups to be covered with L-PRF membrane, PBMT/L-PRF membrane, collagen membrane, or left uncovered as controls. Animals were sacrificed at 1 month. The sections obtained were histomorphometrically analyzed. Results: The results showed that the collagen group presented significantly higher values for main bone healing parameters (BV/TV, bone volume, and bone surface; p < 0.05). The PBMT/L-PRF group presented higher values than the L-PRF group and controls for these parameters though not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The findings show that PBMT may provide additional regenerative properties to L-PRF when used as barrier membranes. However, these results did not reach the collagen membranes, which warrants further studies for adapting the laser parameters to increase regenerative capacity of L-PRF.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of autogenous dentin graft and mixture of autogenous dentin graft and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) applied to the tooth extraction sockets on bone healing process. A total of 57 extraction sockets in 9 patients who were planned to be treated with dental implant after tooth extraction were evaluated in this study. Extraction sockets were divided randomly into 3 groups for each patient. In the first group, sockets were filled with autogenous dentin graft (Group D). In the second group, sockets were filled with the mixture of PRF and autogenous dentin graft (Group DP). In the third group, sockets were left empty as the control group (Group C). After 3 months, histological and immunohistochemical evaluations were performed on the samples taken during the implant surgery. Additionally, samples obtained from each group were examined by scanning electron microscopy. According to the histopathological findings, when the groups were compared in terms of new bone formation there was a significant difference between Group DP, both Group C, and Group D (P = 0.00), (P = 0.001). These findings supported by immunohistochemical results that showing increased bone morphogenetic protein-2 and Runt-related transcription factor-2 expression in Group DP. It has been concluded that undemineralized autogenous dentin graft has bone formation capacity on early period of bone healing. It can be used as bone graft material in augmentation procedures and its combined use with PRF accelerates new bone formation.

Abstract
The sophisticated chain of cellular and molecular episodes during wound healing includes cell migration, cell proliferation, deposition of extracellular matrix, and remodelling and are onerous to replicate. Encapsulation of growth factors (GFs) and Stem cell-based (SCs) has been proclaimed to accelerate healing by transforming every phase associated with wound healing to enhance skin regeneration. Therapeutic application of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) provides aid in wound fixing, tissue integrity restoration and function of impaired tissue. Several scientific studies have established the essential role GFs in wound healing and their reduced degree in the chronic wound. The overall limitation includes half-life, unfriendly microhabitat abundant with protease, and inadequate delivery approaches results in decreased delivery of effective amounts in a suitable time-based fashion. Advancements in the area of reformative medicine as well as tissue engineering have offered techniques competent of dispensing SCs and GFs in site-oriented manner. The progress in nanotechnology-based approaches attracts researcher to study and evaluate the potential of this SCs and GFs based therapy in chronic wounds. These techniques embrace the polymeric regime viz., nano-formulations, hydrogels, liposomes, scaffolds, nanofibers, metallic nanoparticles, lipid-based nanoparticles and dendrimers that have established better retort through targeting tissues when GFs and SCs are transported via these humans made devices. Assumed the current problems, improvements in delivery approaches and difficulties offered by chronic wounds, we hope to show that encapsulation of SCs and GFs loaded nanoformulations therapies is the rational next step in improving wound care.

Abstract
Tooth autotransplantation is a procedure which provides the extraction of an erupted or impacted tooth and its repositioning to another site in the oral cavity. This Case Report describes a successful case of two autotransplantations of open-apex mandibular third molars in place of the hopeless first mandibular molars with the use of L-PRF in a growing patient. A 15-year-old male patient was referred to the Dental Clinic for the extractions of the two hopeless mandibular first molars. Autotransplantation was considered the best treatment option for both sites 36 and 46, because the presence of two impacted mandibular third molars (38 and 48) with an incomplete root formation. Teeth 36 and 46 were extracted and replaced with teeth 38 and 48. The patient had an uneventful healing. At follow-up visits, the two autotransplanted teeth showed physiologic mobility, absence of inflammation and discomfort, and absence of infection; probing depth values were within normal range, and the vitality tests were positive. After 2 years, the teeth in position 36 and 46 showed absence of infection and mobility, and positive pulp vitality tests and the radiographic examinations exhibited closure of the root apices as well as absence of any periapical radiolucency or root resorption. Tooth autotransplantation is a good treatment option in case of tooth loss offering an alternative to traditional or implant-supported prosthesis especially for growing patients.

Abstract
The goal of these recommendations is to provide a framework to practitioners for implementing useful, evidence-based recommendations for the preparation of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in various dermatological indications. The Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL) assigned the task of preparing these recommendations to its task force on PRP. A comprehensive literature search was done in the English language on the preparation of PRP across multiple databases. The grade of evidence and strength of recommendation was evaluated on the GRADE framework (Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation). A draft of clinical recommendations was developed on the best available evidence which was also scrutinized and critically evaluated by the IADVL Academy of Dermatology. Based on the inputs received, this final consensus statement was prepared. A total of 45 articles (meta-analyses, prospective and retrospective studies, reviews [including chapters in books], and case series) were critically evaluated and the evidence thus gathered was used in the preparation of these recommendations. This expert group recommends the use of double-spin manual method for the preparation of PRP. The recommended parameters for centrifuge are 100–300 g for 5–10 min for the first spin and 400–700 g for 10–17 min for the second spin. The recommended platelet concentration in PRP for the treatment of various dermatological conditions is 1–1.5 million platelets/μL. The activation of PRP is not required when it is injected into soft tissues.

Abstract
Background:
Mineralized Plasmatic Matrix [MPM] is a unique form of platelet rich fibrin that contains mineralized bone graft particles within a fibrin network.
Aim:
This study was conducted to evaluate horizontal ridge augmentation using MPM with and without a coverage membrane.
Materials and Methods:
Sixteen edentulous spaces were randomly divided into 2 equal groups. MPM was used for horizontal ridge augmentation with and without a covering collagen membrane (group 1 and 2, respectively). Cone Beam CT images were obtained preoperatively as well as 1 week and 4 months postoperatively to evaluate alveolar ridge and the resorption of the grafting material at 3 predetermined points along with the site where the future dental implant will be placed.
Student’s t-test (Unpaired) was used for comparing two different groups with quantitative parametric data and student’s t-test (Paired) was used for comparing two related groups with quantitative parametric data while repeated measures ANOVA (Analysis of variance) followed by post-hoc Bonferroni was used for comparing more than two related groups with quantitative parametric data.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this case study, a minimally invasive transalveolar approach using platelet-rich fibrin and bone substitute with simultaneous implantation was carried out in an elderly patient. We analyzed the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) findings to evaluate bone regeneration.
CASE SUMMARY A 65-year-old female with no contraindications for dental implants and loss of maxillary bilateral molars is described. Examination by CBCT showed the available vertical bone height in the bilateral posterior maxilla was 0.5-6.8 mm in the left and 2.8-6.5 mm in the right. The patient underwent a transalveolar approach using platelet-rich fibrin and bone substitute with simulataneous placement of an implant 10 mm in length. Six months post-surgery, the implant showed excellent osseointegration with the bone graft. Thereafter, full-ceramic crowns were fitted. Follow-up at 2 years demonstrated satisfactory prognosis.
CONCLUSION Platelet-rich fibrin and bone substitute can be used to augment the maxillary sinus with a vertical bone height less than 4 mm.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Facial nerve damage is a condition that causes functional, psychological, and cosmetic problems; and treatment methods need to be improved. OBJECTIVE We investigated the efficacy of titanium-prepared platelet-rich fibrin as a healing enhancer at the region of transection of the facial nerve. METHODS Twenty-seven New Zealand male rabbits were used in this study, divided into three experimental groups. Group 1, the sham group (n=7); Group 2, the suture group (n=10); and Group 3, the suture+T-PRF group (n=10). In Group 1, the facial nerve trunk was dissected, and no additional surgical intervention was performed. For Group 2, a transection was made to the facial nerve trunk and the nerve endings were sutured together. In Group 3, nerve endings were sutured after transection, and a titanium-prepared platelet-rich fibrin membrane was wrapped in a tube around the damaged area. All animals were followed up weekly for the presence of corneal reflex, whisker movement and low ears. Bilateral facial electromyography was performed both preoperatively and postoperatively at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th weeks. Tissue samples obtained at the 10th week were histopathologically examined, and intra-group and inter-group comparisons were performed. RESULTS Subjects in Group showed improvement in whisker movement and ear drop one week earlier than Group 2. In Group 3, the nerve stimulation threshold required to trigger the compound muscle action potential had returned to values similar to the preoperative control values (11.31±2.16V) by 5 weeks postoperatively (12.51±3.97V), (p=0.249). CONCLUSION Titanium-prepared platelet-rich fibrin administration contributed to partial nerve healing both on a functional and an electrophysiological level.

Abstract
Introduction: Dry socket is one of the most common postoperative complications following the extraction of permanent teeth, which is characterized by pain and exposed bone. The usual protocol followed for its management is irrigation of the socket and packing of the socket with medicated gel or paste to provide relatively faster pain relief and allow normal wound healing. In this study, we evaluated the outcome of management of dry socket with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and intraalveolar alvogyl dressing, in terms of improvement in pain and socket epithelialization after the treatment. Methodology: Thirty participants with established dry socket were randomly divided into two groups: Group A and Group B. The participants in Group A were treated with alvogyl and those in Group B were treated with PRF. Clinical parameters were assessed for both groups on the 1st day of the procedure and on the 3rd and 10th-day postoperatively for the reduction in pain and wound healing. Results: There was a significant decrease in pain and the number of socket wall exposure in both the groups by the 3rd postoperative day. In both the groups, the pain had completely resolved and socket fully epithelialized by the 10th postoperative day. Discussion: The use of PRF in the present study yielded promising results in terms of both pain reduction and improved wound healing which was comparable to the conventional alvogyl dressing. It may be concluded that PRF is an effective modality for the management of dry socket.

Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the effect on vertical bone augmentation of the screw tent-pole technique using particulate allograft in combination with injectable platelet-rich fibrin, and to compare this with autogenous block bone graft. Materials and Methods: This split-mouth randomized controlled study involved patients with bilateral partial edentulism and vertical bone loss in the posterior mandible. In each patient, the control side was treated with autogenous block bone graft harvested from the mandibular ramus and, on the test side, the screw tent-pole technique was employed, using particulate allograft in combination with injectable platelet-rich fibrin. All augmented sites were covered by leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin membrane. The primary outcome variable of this study was the radiographic changes to bone height 6 months after augmentation. The secondary outcome variables were the percentage of newly formed bone and the implant survival rate. The data were analyzed with a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: Of the 13 patients included, a total of 11 patients (7 females, 4 males; mean age 50.92) completed the study. The mean values of vertical bone gain were 1.72 ± 0.78 mm for the test group and 2.83 ± 0.89 mm for the control group, which constitutes a significant difference ( P = .008). The percentage of newly formed bone was 18.08% ± 2.17% for the test group and 14.26% ± 1.76% for the control group. The difference between the groups was statistically significant ( P < .001). The implant survival rates were 100% for both study groups. Conclusions: Based on the study results, screw tent-pole can be considered a feasible technique for bone augmentation. Further randomized studies will be necessary to fully evaluate vertical bone augmentation using the screw tent-pole technique, with different graft materials and with larger samples.

Abstract
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) as a reservoir of various growth factors plays an essential role in wound healing and tissue engineering at present. Electrospinning technology is an efficient approach to acquire artificial scaffold which has large specific surface area and high porosity. The goal of this study was to investigate the potential of electrospinning on the proliferation and osteogenesis of osteogenic precursor cells in vitro, with lyophilized PRF added as a component for electrospinning preparation. The surface structure of lyophilized PRF and nanofibers were investigated, and the proliferation, osteogenesis of MEC3T3-E1 cells with lyophilized PRF or nanofibers extract were studied. The results showed that the diameters of the lyophilized PRF pores were 1.51 ± 0.75 μm, and lyophilized PRF medium promoted the proliferation and osteocalcin (OCN) and osteopontin (OPN) genes expression of MEC3T3-E1 cells. Furthermore, the diameters of the polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate/lyophilized PRF (PVA/SA/PRF) fibers were 201.14 ± 40.14 nm. Compared to PVA/SA nanofibers extract and control medium, PVA/SA/PRF nanofibers extract also enhanced the proliferation and mineralization activity of MEC3T3-E1 cells. These results might be instructive to future therapeutics with PVA/SA/PRF electrospinning for bone tissue engineering or other applications.

Abstract
Background Schneiderian membrane (SM) perforation is a major complication of maxillary sinus elevation with simultaneous bone grafting, yet under this scenario there is no standard biomaterial that maximizes favorable tissue healing and osteogenic effects. Purpose To compare the effect of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) and collagen membrane (CM) on a perforated SM with simultaneous bone grafting in a maxillary sinus elevation model. Materials and Methods After perforation of the SM was established, 24 animals were randomly divided into two groups: (i) group CM: CM and deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) (n = 12), (ii) group A-PRF: A-PRF and DBBM (n = 12). Radiographic and histological evaluations were performed at 1 and 4 weeks post-operation. Results At 1 week, an intact SM was found in group A-PRF. At each time point, the number of inflammatory cells at the perforated site was higher in group CM, and the area of new osteoid formation was significantly greater in group A-PRF (p < 0.0001). At 4 weeks, the osteogenic pattern was shown as from the periphery to the center of the sinus cavity in group A-PRF. Conclusion The higher elasticity, matching degradability, and plentiful growth factors of A-PRF resulted in a fully repaired SM, which later ensured the two osteogenic sources from the SM to generate significant new bone formation. Thus, A-PRF can be considered to be a useful bioactive tissue-healing biomaterial for SM perforation with simultaneous bone grafting.

Abstract
Purpose: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a new platelet concentrate concept consisting of an autologous fibrin gel having accumulation of platelets and the released cytokines in a fibrin clot. The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of autologous PRF in accelerating bone regeneration and repair in fresh third molar extraction sockets. The investigators hypothesized the cicatricial properties and accumulation of growth factors in a single clot which will improve bone density and quality. Materials and Methods: PRF results from a natural and progressive polymerization occurring during centrifugation. Two groups were made with bilaterally impacted third molar patients. PRF was obtained and surgical extraction was carried out under aseptic conditions. Quantitative data are presented as mean. Statistical significance was inferred at P < 0.05. Results: Results obtained were evaluated statistically and found a significant difference between the groups in improvement in alveolar bone density of regenerate measured radiographically. The study demonstrates a faster bone formation in the extracted sockets with PRF as compared to control. Conclusion: PRF proved to be an autologous biomaterial with useful features that allowed efficient postextraction bone defect filling and faster bone regeneration.

Abstract
Objectives Platelet concentrates have been shown to enhance periodontal regeneration when used as a treatment on their own or in conjunction with bone grafting materials. This systematic review aims to assess the effects of using platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), both alone and in combination with other conventionally used materials, on periodontal regeneration in clinical trials. Materials and methods A systematic electronic search was performed in the electronic databases MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, and Web of Science. Specifically, we searched for English language articles published between 2009 and 2019 that conducted in-human studies and included a summary of the results. Our primary search yielded 220 articles, and of these, 110 were clinical studies. Forty-four articles were then selected for a full reading. Results Twenty-six randomized control trials (RCTs) met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Despite the differences between the reviewed studies, most revealed the ability of PRF to promote periodontal wound healing. The positive effects of PRF were observed in clinical criteria, such as reductions in pocket probing depth (PD) and increases in clinical attachment level (CAL), as well as in the degree of defect bone fill, which was determined either radiographically or by surgical re-entry. Conclusions Additional studies are needed to compare the clinical outcomes of various PRF application procedures and establish standardized protocols for treating periodontal disease with PRF.

Abstract
Vascular embolization is a life-saving minimally invasive catheter-based procedure performed to treat bleeding vessels. Through these catheters, numerous metallic coils are often pushed into the bleeding artery to stop the blood flow. While there are numerous drawbacks to coil embolization, physician expertise, availability of these coils, and their costs further limit their use. Here, a novel blood-derived embolic material (BEM) with regenerative properties, that can achieve instant and durable intra-arterial hemostasis regardless of coagulopathy, is developed. In a large animal model of vascular embolization, it is shown that the BEM can be prepared at the point-of-care within 26 min using fresh blood, it can be easily delivered using clinical catheters to embolize renal and iliac arteries, and it can achieve rapid hemostasis in acutely injured vessels. In swine arteries, the BEM increases cellular proliferation, angiogenesis, and connective tissue deposition, suggesting vessel healing and durable vessel occlusion. The BEM has significant advantages over embolic materials used today, making it a promising new tool for embolization.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a severe adverse reaction caused by the use of antiresorptive antiangiogenic medication. Treating MRONJ is difficult and besides standard treatments, which are conservative medical and surgical approaches, there are some adjuvant therapies that might further stimulate healing. The aim of this systematic review is to compare outcome and effectiveness of currently available adjuvant therapies for MRONJ. METHODS This systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. Articles focusing on mucosal healing in patients treated with an adjuvant therapy for MRONJ were selected and analysed. Inclusion was not limited to randomized controlled trials to present a complete review of the current literature. RESULTS A search was performed in Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Thirty articles out of 3297 were included. Laser ablation had a success of 60-95% for complete healing. The controlled trials of leukocyte- and platelet-rich-fibrine (LPRF) showed 60-100% success for the same outcome. Fluorescence guided surgery had a complete healing percentage of 85-90%. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that laser ablation, LPRF and fluorescence guided surgery might have a potential in improving the healing process. Interpreting the results should however be done with great care and a critical point of view, as most articles had a medium to high risk of bias. More randomized controlled trials are necessary to define the most beneficial therapy protocols. CLINICAL RELEVANCE It seems that adjuvant surgical therapies for treating MRONJ are beneficial for mucosal healing, but there is only low scientific evidence.

Abstract
Platelet concentrates (PCs) have been used for over 20 years in dentistry, as an adjunct to oral surgery procedures, to improve hard and soft tissue healing and control postoperative symptoms. Among various PCs, Leukocyte and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) has become very popular due to its excellent cost-effectiveness ratio, and to the simple preparation protocol, but comparative clinical studies with other PCs are lacking. The aim of this split-mouth cohort study was to evaluate the effect of Concentrated Growth Factors (CGF), a recently introduced PC, as compared to L-PRF for enhancing post-extraction socket healing. Methods: Patients in need of bilateral tooth extractions were included. Each side was treated with either CGF or L-PRF. Pain, socket closure and healing index were the main outcomes. Results: Forty-five patients (24 women), aged 60.52 ± 11.75 years (range 37–87 years) were treated. No significant difference in outcomes was found, except for Pain at day 1 (p < 0.001) and socket closure in the vestibulo-palatal/lingual dimension at day 7 post-extraction (p = 0.04), both in favor of CGF. Conclusions: based on the present results, CGF proved to be as effective and safe as L-PRF, representing a valid alternative option for improving alveolar socket healing and reducing postoperative discomfort.

Abstract
The jawbone is a peculiar type of bone tissue, unique for its histological, anatomical and physiological characteristics. Therefore, a defect in the maxilla or in the mandible, because of pathological sequelae is difficult to prevent and to restore. Several biomaterials have been and are currently being developed to respond to the demands of regenerative medicine. A specific group of biomaterials used in regenerative dentistry is represented by the autologous materials. Platelet concentrates harvested bone and dentin derivates are indeed used in an attempt to minimise the alveolar resorption or in vertical ridge augmentation procedures or in sinus lift interventions. The aim of this review is to examine the properties of the above-listed materials, to compare them and to indicate eventual clinical applications.

Abstract
PURPOSE The use of nonvascular bone grafts for immediate mandibular reconstruction has remained a controversial topic. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the variables that might influence graft survival examining the outcomes from 30 years of experience. MATERIALS AND METHODS We designed a retrospective cohort study to analyze the data from patients at a tertiary university medical center who had undergone segmental mandibular resection with immediate reconstruction with a nonvascularized free bone graft with or without adjuncts from 1989 to 2019. The predictor variables recorded included general demographic data, pathologic diagnosis, resection length, reconstruction modality, bone graft type, and inferior alveolar nerve procedures. The primary outcome variable was graft success, defined as bony union demonstrated on panoramic radiographs and mandibular stability demonstrated on clinical examination at 4 months postoperatively. Descriptive, bivariate, and linear regression models were computed. RESULTS The sample included 47 subjects with a mean age of 43 ± 16 years; 51.1% were men. Of the 47 patients, 25 had a tissue diagnosis of benign tumor, most of which were ameloblastoma (n = 16) or ossifying fibroma (n = 6), and 22 had a tissue diagnosis of osteomyelitis or medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). The average resection size for all the patients was 6.9 ± 2.5 cm and was 6.1 ± 1.5 cm for those with a benign tumor and 7.8 ± 3.1 cm for those with osteomyelitis or MRONJ. The mean defect size of grafts that failed was 10.7 ± 3.5 cm and 6.5 ± 2.0 cm for those that succeeded (P ≤ .001). A linear regression model revealed that graft length correlated significantly with graft outcome (β-coefficient, -0.548; 95% confidence interval, 0.905 to 1.542; P ≤ .001). CONCLUSIONS The results of our study have shown that nonvascular bone grafts can be used to immediately reconstruct mandibular defects greater than 6 cm from benign pathologic lesions; however, larger grafts are more likely to fail.

Abstract
AIM To report a case involving transantral palatal root piezoelectric surgery followed by a sinus floor augmentation procedure with the purpose of minimizing and managing complications associated with sinus lining perforations and optimizing bone regeneration at the site of the surgical defect. SUMMARY An asymptomatic 28-year-old male patient with the diagnosis of chronic apical periodontitis on a previously root filled right maxillary first molar (FDI tooth 16) and second premolar (No. 15) was managed by transantral apical surgery. Cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) revealed the position of the palatal root of the first molar within the maxillary sinus. The case highlights the management of the palatal root and the handling of a perforation of the Schneiderian membrane through a combination of piezosurgery and a sinus lift grafting procedure involving a second-generation of platelet concentrates. No postoperative complications were observed. Sinus bone augmentation after a 26-month recall period was confirmed by CBCT in the clinically asymptomatic teeth. KEY LEARNING POINTS The selective bone tissue cutting and enhanced visibility obtained by piezoelectric surgery in comparison with current rotary techniques make this technology the preferred tool for apical surgery when the mucosal lining of the maxillary sinus could be compromised. The wound healing and physical properties of the platelet-rich fibrin membranes in combination with an allograft material can be considered as sinus bone graft options when a transantral approach is performed on a palatal root of a maxillary molar. A preoperative tomographic examination is essential for apical surgery using a transantral approach with sinus bone augmentation, because of the information obtained from the axial and coronal views on the CBCT scan.

Abstract
Background: Platelet concentrates are extensively utilized in the medical and dental field to promote tissue regeneration. The profusion of endogenous growth factors in platelets α-granules transmit their use for enhanced wound healing. However, little attention has been given to study their antimicrobial potential. This study was conducted to assess the antibacterial and antifungal property of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and PRF matrix (PRFM). Materials and Methodology: Blood samples were obtained from 16 participants, PRF and PRFM were processed as per the protocol prescribed by Choukroun et al. and Lucarelli et al., respectively. The susceptibility test against microbiota in the root canal and Candida albicans was assessed through minimum inhibition zone by agar diffusion technique. Results: PRF showed an effective antibacterial property, however, did not perform well against C. albicans strains. PRFM did not show any antibacterial or antifungal properties. Conclusions: The antibacterial efficacy of PRF may prove beneficial when used in the revascularization procedure of immature necrotic teeth.

Abstract
Injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) is an effective biological material that positively contributes to angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, regeneration processes, etc. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of i-PRF in rats with experimental periodontitis. Following the development of ligature-induced periodontitis, 24 Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups. Group-1: scaling and root planing (only-SRP); Group-2: SRP + i-PRF; Group-3: only- i-PRF. Heart blood from six donors was used for the i-PRF application. i-PRF was administered as a subgingival injection in the relevant groups on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th days. The tissues were evaluated histopathologically and immunohistochemically. Also, bone structures were examined using micro-CT. According to the data obtained, no statistically significant difference was observed among the groups in terms of bone resorption, inflammation, bone volume, bone levels (mesial/distal), and IL-1β, IFN-ɤ, TNF-α, VEGF values (p > 0.05). However, bone mineral density was statistically significantly different among the groups (Group3 > Group2 > Group1) (p < 0.0001). Subgingival injection of only-i-PRF showed promising results in periodontitis treatment but contribution to SRP has not been proved according to this study results. The study results suggested that the i-PRF application was as effective as SRP in reducing bone loss, modulating inflammatory process, and effecting cytokines in experimental periodontitis. The significant effect of i-PRF on bone mineral density was the most remarkable result.
