Abstract
A simple and efficient approach to enantioenriched α,β-disubstituted γ-butyrolactones has been developed through multifunctional modular organocatalysis in a highly enantioselective (>99% ee) and diastereoselective (>30:1) manner following a one-pot sequential Michael-hemiacetalization-oxidation reaction. The catalytic process has great substrate compatibility, and the products have been transformed to synthetically useful molecules. The methodology has also been applied to the formal synthesis of (+)-Pilocarpine.

Abstract
An efficient method for the preparation of chiral sulfenylated lactones has been described based on Lewis base-catalyzed enantioselective sulfenylation of unsaturated carboxylic acids. The scope of this method includes two enantioselective cyclization reactions: 5-endo and 6-exo thiolactonizations of alkenes. Two types of lactones were obtained with up to 95% ee and 99% yield. Additionally, this methodology has been applied in the formal syntheses of bioactive natural products (-)-nicotlactone B and (-)-galbacin.

Abstract
Functionalized γ-butyrolactones are privileged structures in the field of medicinal chemistry; they are found in numerous natural products and synthetic compounds with diverse biological activities. The oxidative ring contraction of 3,4-dihydropyran-2-one derivatives represents a promising yet underappreciated strategy to access these compounds. To the best of our knowledge, very few examples of this strategy have been reported, with limited investigation of the influence of stereogenic centers on the starting dihydropyranones. We investigated the iodine(III)-mediated contraction of a representative set of dihydropyranone derivatives. The method gives rapid access to functionalized γ-butyrolactones in good yields. The reaction scope was investigated, and the method was found to support various levels of substituents, even enabling access to sterically congested quaternary centers. The stereoselectivity was investigated using chiral substrates and a chiral iodine(III) reagent.

Abstract
A facile protocol for the synthesis of highly substituted fused γ-alkylidene butenolides using direct annulation of ketones with α-ketoesters, which proceeds through TiCl4-n-Bu3N mediated aldol addition followed by an intramolecular enol-lactonization/cyclization cascade, is reported. Diverse 6-5, 7-5 and 8-5 fused bicyclic γ-ylidene butenolides and highly substituted monocyclic analogs related to biologically relevant natural products were prepared from readily accessible ketone and α-ketoester building blocks. The highly step-economic cascade nature, good substrate scope, easy access to complex products with good to excellent yields, gram-scalability, demonstration of synthetic utility, and unambiguous structural confirmation through X-ray crystallography analyses and analogy are the salient features of this work.

Abstract
Herein, we present a general synthetic strategy for the preparation of 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-membered heterocyclic unnatural amino acid derivatives by exploiting facile Mannich-type reactions between readily available N-alkyl- and N-aryl-substituted diisopropyl iminomalonates and a wide range of soft anionic C-nucleophiles without using any catalyst or additive. Fully substituted aziridines were obtained in a single step when enolates of α-bromo esters were employed as nucleophiles. Enantiomerically enriched azetidines, γ-lactones, and tetrahydroquinolines were obtained via a two-step catalytic asymmetric reduction and cyclization sequence from ketone enolate-derived adducts. Finally, highly substituted γ-lactams were prepared in one pot from adducts obtained using acetonitrile-derived carbanions. Overall, this work clearly demonstrates the utility of iminomalonates as highly versatile building blocks for the practical and scalable synthesis of structurally diverse heterocycles.

Abstract
An alkoxycarbonyl radical cyclization-cross-coupling cascade has been developed that allows functionalized γ-butyrolactones to be prepared in one step from simple tertiary alcohol-derived homoallylic oxalate precursors. The reaction succeeds with aryl and vinyl electrophiles and is compatible with heterocyclic fragments in both coupling partners. This chemistry allows for the rapid construction of spirolactones, which are of interest in drug discovery endeavors.

Abstract
Chirality is a natural attribute nature of living matter and plays an important role in maintaining the metabolism, evolution and functional activities of living organisms. Asymmetric conformation represents the chiral structure of biomacromolecules in living organisms on earth, such as the L-amino acids of proteins and enzymes, and the D-sugars of DNA or RNA, which exist preferentially as one enantiomer. Circularly polarized light (CPL), observed in the formation regions of the Orion constellation, has long been proposed as one of the origins of single chirality. Herein, the CPL triggered asymmetric polymerization, photo-modulation of chirality based on polymers are described. The mechanisms between CPL and polymers (including polydiacetylene, azobenzene polymers, chiral coordination polymers, and polyfluorene) are described in detail. This minireview provides a promising flexible asymmetric synthesis method for the fabrication of chiral polymer via CPL irradiation, with the hope of obtaining a better understanding of the origin of homochirality on earth.

Abstract
A new strategy for a direct α,β,γ-functionalization of the γ-lactone framework in the corresponding 5-alkylidenefuran-2(5 H)-ones is reported. The developed approach is based on a stereocontrolled cascade reaction with 2-mercaptocarbonyl compounds proceeding in a sequence of thia-Michael/aldol/oxa-Michael reactions. Such a synthetic strategy allows for a construction of a unique polycyclic architecture containing γ-lactone, tetrahydrofuran, and tetrahydrothiophene ring systems. Excellent enantioselectivities and diastereoselectivities have been obtained in the presence of bifunctional catalyst derived from cinchona alkaloids.

An innovative strategy to prepare these compounds is based on C-H bond functionalization reactions, in which two simple, unfunctionalized molecules are coupled together with cleavage of a C-H bond and formation of a C-X bond (X=C or heteroatom). This paper reviews the methods for the synthesis of phthalides and α,β-butenolides by C-H bond functionalization from non-halogenated starting materials. Over 30 methods are reported, mostly developed during the past ten years.

Abstract
A direct C(sp2)-H amination of 2-furanones under metal-free conditions was realized. This unprecedented intermolecular C-H to C-N conversion provides rapid access to 4-amino-furanone derivatives and novel aza-heterocycle fused furanone skeletons. A redox mechanism based on a double-Michael-addition intermediate INT2 is proposed and detected by spectrometry.

Abstract
A TiCl4-promoted cascade formal [3 + 2] cycloaddition/double ring-opening/chlorination of 2-furylcyclobutanols with alkyl or aryl azides is described. This highly efficient transformation involves the formation/cleavage of several C-N, C-Cl, C-C, and C-O bonds in a single operation. It enables the quick construction of trisubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles with an ( E)-enone moiety and a 3-chloropropyl unit. The chlorinated products are readily transformed into other structurally diverse analogues.

Abstract
The Kinetic Resolution (KR) of α-alkylated enolisable disubstituted anhydrides has been shown to be possible for the first time. In the presence of an ad hoc designed novel class of bifunctional sulfamide organocatalyst, a regio-, diastereo- and enantioselective cycloaddition reaction between the enolisable anhydride and benzaldehydes provides densely functionalised γ-butyrolactones in one pot (up to 19 : 1 dr, 94% ee) with control over three contiguous stereocentres. The concomitant resolution of the starting material anhydride, provides access to a range of chiral succinate derivatives with selectivity factors up to S* = 10.5.

Abstract
The chemistry of the carbonyl group is essential to modern organic synthesis. The preparation of substituted, enantioenriched 1,3- or 1,5-dicarbonyls is well developed, as their disconnection naturally follows from the intrinsic polarity of the carbonyl group. By contrast, a general enantioselective access to quaternary stereocenters in acyclic 1,4-dicarbonyl systems remains an unresolved problem, despite the tremendous importance of 2,3-substituted 1,4-dicarbonyl motifs in natural products and drug scaffolds. Here we present a broad enantioselective and stereodivergent strategy to access acyclic, polysubstituted 1,4-dicarbonyls via acid-catalyzed [3,3]-sulfonium rearrangement starting from vinyl sulfoxides and ynamides. The stereochemistry at sulfur governs the absolute sense of chiral induction, whereas the double bond geometry dictates the relative configuration of the final products.

Abstract
Stereogenic acetals, spiroacetals and ketals are well-studied stereochemical features that bear two heteroatoms at a common carbon atom. These stereocenters are normally found in cyclic structures while linear (or acyclic) analogues bearing two heteroatoms are rare. Chiral geminal-dicarboxylates are illustrative, there is no current way to access this class of compounds while controlling the stereochemistry at the carbon center bound to two oxygen atoms. Here we report a rhodium-catalysed asymmetric carboxylation of ester-containing allylic bromides to form stereogenic carbon centers bearing two different carboxylates with high yields and enantioselectivities. The products, which are surprisingly stable to a variety of acidic and basic conditions, can be manipulated with no loss of enantiomeric purity as demonstrated by ring closing metathesis reactions to form chiral lactones, which have been extensively used as building blocks in asymmetric synthesis.

Abstract
Cu(I), Ag(I), and Au(I) complexes of monophosphine or bisphosphine ligands based on the 3,3,4,4,5,5-hexafluorocyclopentene skeleton were synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The electron-withdrawing nature of these polyfluorinated phosphines was experimentally revealed via UV/vis absorption studies and crystal structure analysis. Successful catalytic application of the Au(I) complex for alkyne hydration reactions was investigated.

Abstract
Thermal isomerizations of various propargyl 3-acylpropiolates are described. Many result in the formation of 3-acylbutenolides. These reactions appear to proceed through intermediate 2,3-dehydropyrans (strained cyclic allenes), which then isomerize in a previously unobserved fashion. Competitive processes that provide additional mechanistic insights are also described.

Abstract
The metal-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate addition (ACA) reaction has emerged as a general and powerful approach for the construction of optically active compounds and is among the most significant and useful reactions in synthetic organic chemistry. In recent years, great progress has been made in this area with the use of various chiral metal complexes based on different chiral ligands. This review provides comprehensive and critical information on the enantioselective 1,4-conjugate addition of nonorganometallic (soft) nucleophiles and their importance in synthetic applications. The literature is covered from the last 10 years, and a number of examples from before 2007 are included as background information. The review is divided into multiple parts according to the type of nucleophile involved in the reaction (such as C-, B-, O-, N-, S-, P-, and Si-centered nucleophiles) and metal catalyst systems used.
