Abstract
Conjugated-polymer nanofibers with a thermodynamically stable, coarsened, disordered structure in an amorphous glassy state were fabricated via a freeze-drying method using a poly(diphenylacetylene) derivative. The nanofibers were extremely emissive, with a fluorescence (FL) quantum yield of approximately 0.34, which was much higher than that of both the cast film (0.02) and the solution (0.21). Similarly, the amplitude-weighted average FL lifetime of the nanofibers was 0.74 ns, which was much longer than that of the film (0.29 ns) and the solution (0.57 ns). This unusual and enhanced FL-emission behavior was attributed to the abruptly quenched chain structure that was created by the freeze-drying process. The polymer chains in the nanofibers remained frozen-in and the side phenyl rings were retained in a relaxed state. The metastable chains did not undergo vibrational relaxation and collisional quenching to generate the radiative emission decay effectively.

Abstract
Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with robust electronic band gaps are promising candidate materials for nanometer-scale electronic circuits. Realizing their full potential, however, will depend on the ability to access GNRs with prescribed widths and edge structures and an understanding of their fundamental electronic properties. We report field-effect devices exhibiting ambipolar transport in accumulation mode composed of solution-synthesized GNRs with straight armchair edges. Temperature-dependent electrical measurements specify thermally activated charge transport, which we attribute to inter-ribbon hopping. With access to structurally precise materials in practical quantities and by overcoming processing difficulties in making electrical contacts to these materials, we have demonstrated critical steps toward nanoelectric devices based on solution-synthesized GNRs.

Abstract
In this work a rigid asymmetrical tricarboxylate ligand p-terphenyl-3,4″,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3L) has been employed, and a unique heterometallic alkaline earth-lanthanide microporous luminescent metal-organic framework (MOF) {[Ba3La0.5(μ3-L)2.5(H2O)3(DMF)]·(3DMF)}n (1·3DMF) (DMF = dimethylformamide) has been isolated under solvothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis demonstrates that 2D inorganic Ba-O-La connectivity can be observed in 1, which are further bridged via rigid terphenyl backbones of L(3-), forming a unique I(2)O(1)-type microporous luminescent framework. A 1D microporous channel with dimensionality of 9.151(3) Å × 10.098(1) Å can be observed along the crystallographic a axis. PXRD patterns have been investigated indicating pure phases of 1. The luminescence explorations demonstrated that 1 exhibits highly selective and sensitive sensing for Al(3+) over other cations with high quenching efficiency Ksv value of 1.445 × 10(4) L·mol(-1) and low detection limit (1.11 μM (S/N = 3)). Meanwhile 1 also exhibits highly selective and sensitive sensing for MnO4(-) over other anions with quenching efficiency Ksv = 7.73 × 10(3) L·mol(-1) and low detection limit (0.28 μM (S/N = 3)). It is noted that, when different concentrations of MnO4(-) solutions (0.5 to 100 μM) were dropped into the suspension of 1, the bright blue luminescence of the suspension observed under UV light can gradually change into pink color, indicating visually luminescent sensing, which makes the detection process of MnO4(-) more convenient in practical. The result also reveals that 1 represents the first example of bifunctional heterometallic alkaline earth-lanthanide MOF-based luminescent probes for selectively detecting Al(3+) and MnO4(-) in the water solutions.

Abstract
A series of symmetrically substituted diphenylbuta-1,3-diyne (DPB) derivatives possessing electron-donating (N,N-dimethylamino or methoxy) or electron-accepting (nitrile, ester or aldehyde) groups have been prepared and studied with emphasis on their spectral and photophysical properties. The photophysical characteristics of these compounds have been studied in relation to their structures and influence of solvents or temperature. The observed spectral and photophysical properties are explained with the help of potential energy maps in the ground and excited states obtained from density functional theory (DFT, B3LYP, def2TZVP basis set) calculations. The structure-property relationship of all of the compounds is discussed and compared with appropriate diphenylacetylene derivatives.

Abstract
Bio-inspired self-cleaning surfaces have found industrial applications in oil-water separation, stain resistant textiles, anti-biofouling paints in ships etc. Interestingly, self-cleaning metal-organic framework (MOF) materials having high water contact angles and corrosion resistance have not been realized so far. To address this issue, we have used the fundamentals of self-assembly to expose hydrophobic alkyl chains on a MOF surface. This decreases the surface free energy and hence increases hydrophobicity. Coordination directed self-assembly of dialkoxyoctadecyl-oligo-(p-phenyleneethynylene)dicarboxylate (OPE-C18 ) with ZnII in a DMF/H2O mixture leads to a three dimensional supramolecular porous framework {Zn(OPE-C18)·2H2O} (NMOF-1) with nanobelt morphology. Inherently superhydrophobic and self-cleaning NMOF-1 has high thermal and chemical stability. The periodic arrangement of 1D Zn-OPE-C18 chains with octadecyl alkyl chains projecting outward reduces the surface free energy leading to superhydrophobicity in NMOF-1 (contact angle: 160-162°). The hierarchical surface structure thus generated, enables NMOF-1 to mimic the lotus leaf in its self-cleaning property with an unprecedented tilt angle of 2°. Additionally, superhydrophobicity remains intact over a wide pH range (1-9) and under high ionic concentrations. We believe that such a development in this field will herald a new class of materials capable of water repellent applications.

Abstract
Large increases in molecular two-photon absorption, the onset of measurable molecular three-photon absorption, and record molecular four-photon absorption in organic π-delocalizable frameworks are achieved by incorporation of bis(diphosphine)ruthenium units with alkynyl linkages. The resultant ruthenium alkynyl-containing dendrimers exhibit strong multiphoton absorption activity through the biological and telecommunications windows in the near-infrared region. The ligated ruthenium units significantly enhance solubility and introduce fully reversible redox switchability to the optical properties. Increasing the ruthenium content leads to substantial increases in multiphoton absorption properties without any loss of optical transparency. This significant improvement in multiphoton absorption performance by incorporation of the organometallic units into the organic π-framework is maintained when the relevant parameters are scaled by molecular weights or number of delocalizable π-electrons. The four-photon absorption cross-section of the most metal-rich dendrimer is an order of magnitude greater than the previous record value.

Abstract
The structural and electronic consequences of π-π and C-H/π interactions in two alkoxy-substituted 1,8-bis- ((propyloxyphenyl)ethynyl)naphthalenes are explored by using X-ray crystallography and electronic structure computations. The crystal structure of analogue 4, bearing an alkoxy side chain in the 4-position of each of the phenyl rings, adopts a π-stacked geometry, whereas analogue 8, bearing alkoxy groups at both the 2- and the 5-positions of each ring, has a geometry in which the rings are splayed away from a π-stacked arrangement. Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory analysis was performed on the two analogues to evaluate the interactions between the phenylethynyl arms in each molecule in terms of electrostatic, steric, polarization, and London dispersion components. The computations support the expectation that the π-stacked geometry of the alkoxyphenyl units in 4 is simply a consequence of maximizing π-π interactions. However, the splayed geometry of 8 results from a more subtle competition between different noncovalent interactions: this geometry provides a favorable anti-alignment of C-O bond dipoles, and two C-H/π interactions in which hydrogen atoms of the alkyl side chains interact favorably with the π electrons of the other phenyl ring. These favorable interactions overcome competing π-π interactions to give rise to a geometry in which the phenylethynyl substituents are in an offset, unstacked arrangement.
