Abstract
Two-photon-pumped dye lasers are very important because of their applications in wavelength up-conversion, optical data storage, biological imaging and photodynamic therapy. Such lasers are very difficult to realize in the solid state because of the aggregation-caused quenching. Here we demonstrate a new two-photon-pumped micro-laser by encapsulating the cationic pyridinium hemicyanine dye into an anionic metal-organic framework (MOF). The resultant MOF⊃dye composite exhibits significant two-photon fluorescence because of the large absorption cross-section and the encapsulation-enhanced luminescent efficiency of the dye. Furthermore, the well-faceted MOF crystal serves as a natural Fabry–Perot resonance cavity, leading to lasing around 640 nm when pumped with a 1064-nm pulse laser. This strategy not only combines the crystalline benefit of MOFs and luminescent behaviour of organic dyes but also creates a new synergistic two-photon-pumped lasing functionality, opening a new avenue for the future creation of solid-state photonic materials and devices. Two-photon-pumped dye lasers are useful for applications such as biological imaging; however, loss processes reduce their efficiency. Here, metal-organic frameworks, into which the laser dye is incorporated, demonstrate enhanced laser operation because losses such as dye aggregation-caused quenching are reduced.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are well known for their tunable structure and porosity. Many studies have shown they are promising for various important applications, for which their performance can be further enhanced by encapsulating functional species, such as luminescent guest molecules, within the frameworks. Although numerous MOFs are luminescent, very few emit white light and their quantum yield is usually low. Here we report a strategy to achieve efficient white-light emission by encapsulating an iridium complex in the MOF cavity. A mesoporous blue-emitting MOF is prepared as host to encapsulate a yellow-emitting iridium complex, [Ir(ppy)2(bpy)](+). The resultant composites emit bright white light with good colour quality (for example, Commission International de I'Eclairage coordinates, colour-rendering index and correlated colour temperature of (0.31, 0.33), 84.5 and 5409 K, respectively), and high quantum yield up to 115 °C. This strategy may open new perspectives for developing high-performance energy-saving solid-state lighting materials.

Abstract
Compared with nitroaromatic explosives detection, nitrate esters are far from wide attention possibly because of their shortage of aromatic ring and difficulty in being detected. Three fluorescent chemical probes for trace nitrate ester detection: an intramolecular dimer (P3) of 8-pyrenyl-substituted fluorenes bridged by a 1,6-hexanyl unit as well as its counterparts 2PR-F (P1) and 2PR-Cz (P2) has been synthesized and characterized. Their chemical structures and photophysical and electrochemical properties show that the dimer P3 film has a higher molar extinction coefficient, larger steric hindrance, higher area-to-volume ratio, and matching energy level with nitrate ester explosives, which contributes to higher sensitivity and moderate selectivity for sensing of nitrate ester explosives such as nitroglycerin (NG). The fluorescence of the P3 film is rapidly about 90% quenched upon exposure to a saturated vapor of NG for 50 s and almost 100% quenched for 300 s at room temperature due to photoinduced electron transfer between the probe and analyte. In addition, a very sensitive, rapid, simple, and low-cost surface-sensing method by disposable filter-paper-based test strips is demonstrated. The contact-mode approach exhibits a detection limit as low as 0.5 fg/cm(2) for NG. These results reveal that the multiple-pyrenyl-unit-substituted fluorene dimer P3 is suitable for preparing a highly sensitive and efficient thin-film device for detecting nitrate esters.

Tunable two-color luminescence and host-guest energy transfer of fluorescent chromophores encapsulated in metal-organic frameworks. Sci Rep 2014; 4:4337. Abstract
Co-assembly of chromophore guests with host matrices can afford materials which have photofunctionalities different from those of individual components. Compared with clay and zeolite materials, the use of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as a host structure for fabricating luminescent host–guest materials is still at an early stage. Herein, we report the incorporation of a laser dye, 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM), into stilbene-based and naphthalene-based MOF systems. The resulting materials exhibit blue/red two-color emission, and the intensity ratio of blue to red fluorescence varies in different planes within the MOF crystal as detected by 3D confocal fluorescence microscopy. The observed changes in ratiometric fluorescence suggest the occurrence of energy transfer from MOF host to DCM molecules, which can be further confirmed by periodic density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations. Moreover, selective changes in luminescence behavior are observed on treating the guest@MOF samples with volatile organic compounds (methanol, acetone and toluene), indicating that these host–guest systems have potential applications as fluorescence sensors. It can be expected that by rational selection of MOF hosts and guest chromophores with suitable emissive colors and energy levels, a wide variety of multi-color luminescent and energy-transfer systems can readily be prepared in a similar manner.

Abstract
The detection, differentiation and visualization of compounds such as gases, liquids or ions are key challenges for the design of selective optical chemosensors. Optical chemical sensors employ a transduction mechanism that converts a specific analyte recognition event into an optical signal. Here we report a novel concept for fluoride ion sensing where a porous crystalline framework serves as a host for a fluorescent reporter molecule. The detection is based on the decomposition of the host scaffold which induces the release of the fluorescent dye molecule. Specifically, the hybrid composite of the metal-organic framework NH2-MIL-101(Al) and fluorescein acting as reporter shows an exceptional turn-on fluorescence in aqueous fluoride-containing solutions. Using this novel strategy, the optical detection of fluoride is extremely sensitive and highly selective in the presence of many other anions.

Abstract
A new mixed lanthanide metal-organic framework thermometer Tb0.9Eu0.1PIA with the significantly high sensitivity of 3.53% per K has been realized by making use of an organic ligand, 5-(pyridin-4-yl)isophthalate, with higher triplet state energy.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received attention for a myriad of potential applications including catalysis, gas storage, and gas separation. Coordinatively unsaturated metal ions often enable key functional behavior of these materials. Most commonly, MOFs have been metalated from the condensed phase (i.e., from solution). Here we introduce a new synthetic strategy capable of metallating MOFs from the gas phase: atomic layer deposition (ALD). Key to enabling metalation by ALD In MOFs (AIM) was the synthesis of NU-1000, a new, thermally stable, Zr-based MOF with spatially oriented -OH groups and large 1D mesopores and apertures.
