Abstract
3-alkoxycarbonyl-1beta-methylcarbapenem could be synthesized by using a palladium-catalyzed C-N bond-forming reaction between vinyl halide and beta-lactam nitrogen. In this reaction, the use of Pd(OAc)(2) and DPEphos gave a good result, and the generation of Pd(0) from Pd(OAc)(2) in the absence of a base is necessary to increase the yield.

Abstract
Detailed studies have been conducted to determine the activity of palladium catalysts for the amination of five-membered heterocyclic halides and to determine the factors that control the scope of this reaction. Palladium-catalyzed aminations of the electron-rich furanyl, thiophenyl, and indolyl halides and of the related 2-halogenated thiazoles, benzimidazole, and benzoxazole have been shown to occur with a subset of amines. Various combinations of palladium precursors and P(t)Bu(3) were tested as catalysts for reaction of 3-bromothiophene with N-methylaniline, and the fastest reactions occurred with the Pd(I) dimer, [PdBr(P(t)Bu(3))](2). The fastest aminations of thiazoles, benzimidazoles, and benzoxazoles occurred with the combination of palladium trifluoroacetate and P(t)Bu(3) as catalyst.

Abstract
It is shown that the bicyclic triaminophosphine P(i-BuNCH2CH2)3N serves as an effective ligand for the palladium-catalyzed amination of a wide array of aryl bromides and iodides. Other bicyclic or acyclic triaminophosphines, even those of similar basicity and/or bulk, were inferior.

Abstract
A nucleophilic N-heterocyclic carbene has been successfully used in a Pd(0)-catalyzed allylic substitution for the first time. It was found that allylic substitution with a soft nucleophile using a Pd-carbene catalyst proceeds via retention of configuration, the stereochemical reaction pathway being the same as that of the reaction using a Pd-phosphine complex. Abstract
A catalytic amount of Pd(dba)(2) ligated by either carbene precursor N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazolium (1) or P(t-Bu)(3) mediated the coupling of aryl halides and ester enolates to produce alpha-aryl esters in high yields at room temperature. The reaction was highly tolerant of functionalities and substitution patterns on the aryl halide. Improved protocols for the selective monoarylation of tert-butyl acetate and the efficient arylation of alpha,alpha-disubstituted esters were developed with LiNCy(2) as base and P(t-Bu)(3) as ligand. In addition, tert-butyl esters, such as those of Naproxen and Flurbiprofen, were prepared from tert-butyl propionate and aryl bromides in high yields in the presence of Pd(dba)(2) and the hindered, saturated heterocyclic carbene ligand precursor.

Abstract
A general and simple nickel-catalyzed coupling of aryl chlorides and amines is reported. The scope and limitations of the coupling process using Ni(0), 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene, and NaO-t-Bu as base were investigated. Secondary cyclic and acyclic amines and anilines provided the arylamine coupling products in good to excellent yields. Compared to palladium-catalyzed aminations, this procedure offers an alternative route to N-substituted anilines starting from readily available aryl chlorides.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed reactions of aryl bromides and chlorides with two common stabilized carbanions-enolates of dialkyl malonates and alkyl cyanoesters-are reported. An exploration of the scope of these reactions was conducted, and the processes were shown to occur in a general fashion. Using P(t-Bu)(3) (1), the pentaphenylferrocenyl ligand (Ph(5)C(5))Fe(C(5)H(4))P(t-Bu)(2) (2), or the adamantyl ligand (1-Ad)P(t-Bu)(2) (3), reactions of electron-poor and electron-rich, sterically hindered and unhindered aryl bromides and chlorides were shown to react with diethyl malonate, di-tert-butyl malonate, diethyl fluoromalonate, ethyl cyanoacetate, and ethyl phenylcyanoacetate. Although alkyl malonates and ethyl alkylcyanoacetates did not react with aryl halides using these catalysts, the same products were formed conveniently in one pot from diethylmalonate by cross-coupling of an aryl halide in the presence of excess base and subsequent alkylation.

Abstract
Iridium complex-catalyzed allylic amination of allylic carbonates was studied. The solvent strongly affected the catalytic activity. The use of a polar solvent such as EtOH is essential for obtaining the products in high yield. The reaction of (E)-3-substituted-2-propenyl carbonate and 1-substituted-2-propenyl carbonate with pyrrolidine in the presence of a catalytic amount of [Ir(COD)Cl](2) and P(OPh)(3) (P/Ir = 2) gave a branch amine with up to 99% selectivity. Both secondary and primary amines could be used for this reaction. When a primary amine was used, selective monoallylation occurred. No diallylation product was obtained. The reaction of 1,1-disubstituted-2-propenyl acetate with amines exclusively gave an alpha,alpha-disubstituted allylic amine. This reaction provides an alternative route to the addition of an organometallic reagent to ketimines for the preparation of such amines. The reaction of (Z)-3-substituted-2-propenyl carbonate with amines gave (Z)-linear amines with up to 100% selectivity. In all cases, no (E)-linear amine was obtained. The selectivities described here have not been achieved in similar palladium complex-catalyzed reactions.

Abstract
[reaction: see text]. A simple, palladium-catalyzed method to convert aryl halides to the parent anilines using lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (LiN(SiMe3)2) is reported. The reaction is catalyzed by Pd(dba)2 and P(t-Bu)3 and can be run with as little as 0.2 mol % of catalyst. The reaction is faster than competing generation of benzyne intermediates and, therefore, provides the aniline products regiospecifically.

Abstract
Aryl bromides react with (H(2)NCH(2)CH(2))(3)N in a reaction catalyzed by Pd(2)(dba)(3) in the presence of BINAP and NaO-t-Bu to give the arylated derivatives (ArylNHCH(2)CH(2))(3)N [Aryl = C(6)H(5) (1a), 4-FC(6)H(4) (1b), 4-t-BuC(6)H(4) (1c), 3,5-Me(2)C(6)H(3) (1d), 3,5-Ph(2)C(6)H(3) (1e), 3,5-(4-t-BuC(6)H(4))(2)C(6)H(3) (1f), 2-MeC(6)H(4) (1g), 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2) (1h)]. Reactions between (ArNHCH(2)CH(2))(3)N (Ar = C(6)H(5), 4-FC(6)H(4), 3,5-Me(2)C(6)H(3), and 3,5-Ph(2)C(6)H(3)) and Mo(NMe(2))(4) in toluene at 70 degrees C lead to [(ArNHCH(2)CH(2))(3)N]Mo(NMe(2)) complexes in yields ranging from 64 to 96%. Dimethylamido species (Ar = 4-FC(6)H(4), 3,5-Me(2)C(6)H(3)) could be converted into paramagnetic [(ArNHCH(2)CH(2))(3)N]MoCl species by treating them with 2,6-lutidinium chloride in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The "direct reaction" between 1a-f and MoCl(4)(THF)(2) in THF followed by 3 equiv of MeMgCl yielded [(ArNHCH(2)CH(2))(3)N]MoCl species (3a-f) in high yield. If 4 equiv of LiMe instead of MeMgCl are employed in the direct reaction, then [(ArNHCH(2)CH(2))(3)N]MoMe species are formed. Tungsten species, [(ArNHCH(2)CH(2))(3)N]WCl, could be prepared by analogous "direct" methods. Cyclic voltammetric studies reveal that MoCl complexes become more difficult to reduce as the electron donating ability of the [ArylNCH(2)CH(2))(3)N]3- ligand increases, and the reductions become less reversible, consistent with ready loss of chloride from ([(ArNHCH(2)CH(2))(3)N]MoCl)(-). Tungsten complexes are more difficult to reduce, and reductions are irreversible on the CV time scale.
