ZnFe2 O4 Dendrite/SnO2 Helix 3D Hetero-Structure Photoanodes for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting: Triple Functions of SnO2 Nanohelix

An array of SnO₂ nanohelix structures is employed to fabricate a SnO₂ helix@ZnFe₂ O₄ dendrite core-shell 3D heterostructure photoanode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. The SnO₂ helix provides triple critical functions to enhance the PEC performance of the photoanode. First, it scatters the incident light to achieve a higher light harvesting efficiency. Second, it provides a facile electron pathway as an electron transfer layer (ETL) while blocking hole transport to mitigate charge recombination in the bulk of ZnFe₂ O₄ . Finally, it becomes a template for the formation of ZnFe₂ O₄ dendrite nanostructure shell. The ZnFe₂ O₄ dendrite/SnO₂ helix photoanode exhibits a remarkable increase in incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency compared to unmodified ZnFe₂ O₄ with no ETL and modified one with "flat" SnO₂ ETL. The surface of the ZnFe₂ O₄ /SnO₂ helix photoanode is further modified with TiO₂ passivation layer and NiFeO_x oxygen evolution co-catalyst to achieve one of the best PEC performances among reported ZnFe₂ O₄ -based photoanodes.

A self-healing catalyst for electrocatalytic and photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution in highly alkaline conditions

While self-healing is considered a promising strategy to achieve long-term stability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, this strategy remains a challenge for OER catalysts working in highly alkaline conditions. The self-healing of the OER-active nickel iron layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDH) has not been successful due to irreversible leaching of Fe catalytic centers. Here, we investigate the introduction of cobalt (Co) into the NiFe-LDH as a promoter for in situ Fe redeposition. An active borate-intercalated NiCoFe-LDH catalyst is synthesized using electrodeposition and shows no degradation after OER tests at 10 mA cm⁻² at pH 14 for 1000 h, demonstrating its self-healing ability under harsh OER conditions. Importantly, the presence of both ferrous ions and borate ions in the electrolyte is found to be crucial to the catalyst’s self-healing. Furthermore, the implementation of this catalyst in photoelectrochemical devices is demonstrated with an integrated silicon photoanode. The self-healing mechanism leads to a self-limiting catalyst thickness, which is ideal for integration with photoelectrodes since redeposition is not accompanied by increased parasitic light absorption.

While self-healing catalysts may survive the harsh environments used for oxygen evolution, understanding how to develop such electrocatalysts remains a challenge. Here, authors find cobalt to promote the self-healing of leached iron centers in borate-intercalated nickel-iron-cobalt oxyhydroxides.

Current and future perspectives on catalytic-based integrated carbon capture and utilization

There exist several well-known methods with varying maturity for capturing carbon dioxide from emission sources of different concentrations, including absorption, adsorption, cryogenics and membrane separation, among others. The capture and separation steps can produce almost pure CO₂, but at substantial cost for being conditioned for transport and final utilization, with high economical risks to be considered. A possible way for the elimination of this conditioning and cost is direct CO₂ utilization, whether on-site in a further process but within the same plant, or in-situ, coupling both capture and conversion in the same unit. This approach is usually called integrated carbon capture and utilization (ICCU) or integrated carbon capture and conversion (ICCC), and has lately started receiving considerable attention in many circles. As CO₂ is already industrially employed in other sectors, such as food preservation, water treatment and conversion to high added-value chemicals and fuels such as methanol, methane, etc., among others, it is of great interest to explore the global ICCC approach. Catalytic-based processes play a key role in CO₂ conversion, and different technologies are gaining great attention from both academia and industry. However, the 'big picture of ICCU' and in which technology the efforts should focus on at large scale is still unclear. This review analyzes some promising concepts of ICCU specifically on CO₂ catalytic conversion, highlighting their current commercial relevance as well as challenges that have to be faced today and in the next future.

Study of the structure of a multicomponent salt melt using molecular dynamics modeling

The composition of the electrolyte is critical in the electrodeposition of high-purity silicon. In this work, molecular dynamics modeling of the preparation of liquid salt melt KF-KCl-KI and a detailed study of its structure based on the method of statistical geometry have been performed. Partial radial distribution functions reflect the size of the ions under consideration and the averaged structure of the generated ionic subsystems. Halogen subsystems have domed angular distributions of nearest geometric neighbors, a wide range of face types of combined polyhedra, and fifth order rotational symmetry. The shape of the distribution of distances to the nearest neighbors of a given type depends on the amount of these ions in the melt. Small-scale thermal fluctuations in the halogen subsystems are predominantly represented by small triangular faces in combined polyhedra. The electrodeposition of silicon was carried out in a homogeneous salt melt, in which each halogen ion had from one to three close contacts with halogen ions of any other type. The simulations performed provide a fundamental understanding of the structure of the electrolyte molten salts used to produce solar silicon.

Cost-Efficient Photovoltaic-Water Electrolysis over Ultrathin Nanosheets of Cobalt/Iron-Molybdenum Oxides for Potential Large-Scale Hydrogen Production

Unassisted photovoltaic (PV) water splitting to hydrogen system is of great potential for future environmental-friendly fuel production from renewable solar energy. However, industrialization simultaneously requires higher efficiency, sustained stability and a lower cost for the system. In this work, the ultrathin cobalt/iron-molybdenum oxides nanosheet on nickel foam (NF) is prepared for efficient HER and OER, respectively, delivering a relatively low voltage of 1.45 V at 10 mA cm^-2 in two-electrodes configuration. Water electrolysis at low voltage driven by electrocatalysts is critical for realizing energy conversion. Integrated with a commercial monocrystalline silicon cell, the H₂ area specific activity of 0.47 L m^-2 h^-1 is achieved with a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 15.1% under solar simulator illumination (100 mW cm^-2 ) and no performance degradation appeares over 160 h. Such a solar conversion technology demonstrates the potential for long-term and cost-efficient H₂ production in large-scale industrialization and provides an exploration for new-type of energy-conversion system.

Regulating thermochemical redox temperature via oxygen defect engineering for protection of solar molten salt receivers

An active coating based on thermochemical redox reactions is proposed to protect molten salt receivers from solar flux fluctuation. However, appropriate metal oxides working in the temperature range of 530 and 850°C are still missing. Herein, we put forward an oxygen defect engineering strategy to regulate the thermochemical redox temperatures of perovskites. A tunable temperature range of 426-702°C is obtained by BaCo_1-x Mn _x O_3-δ (x = 0-0.4). It is found that a raised redox temperature can be obtained with the increase of the oxygen vacancy formation energy. For application, BaCo_0.8Mn_0.2O_3-δ is designed as the active protective coating of a lab-scale receiver, which has a thermal capacity of 82.95 kJ kg^-1. The smart coating can slow down the temperature rising rate from 8.5°C min^-1 to 3°C min^-1 in the first 2 min under strong solar radiation, effectively relieving the thermal shock of the receiver.

Ultrafast Fluctuations in PM6 Domains of Binary and Ternary Organic Photovoltaic Thin Films Probed with Two-Dimensional White-Light Spectroscopy

We present two-dimensional white-light spectroscopy (2DWL) measurements of binary and ternary bulk heterojunctions of the polymer donor PM6 mixed with state-of-the-art nonfullerene acceptors Y6 or IT4F. The ternary film has a shorter lifetime and faster spectral diffusion than either of the binary films. 2D line shape analysis of the PM6 ground state bleach with a Kubo model determines that all three films have similar amplitudes of fluctuations (Δ = 0.29 fs^-1) in their transition frequencies, but different relaxation times (ranging from 102 to 24 fs). The ternary film exhibits faster dynamics than either of the binary films. The short lifetime of the ternary blend is consistent with increased photoexcitation transfer and the fast frequency fluctuations are consistent with structural dynamics of aliphatic side chains. These results suggest that the femtosecond fluctuations of PM6 are impacted by the choice of the acceptor molecules. We hypothesize that those dynamics are either indicative, or perhaps the initial source, of structural dynamics that ultimately contribute to solar cell operation.

All-Day Anti-Icing/Deicing Film Based on Combined Photo-Electro-Thermal Conversion

Solar energy-facilitated icephobic films have emerged as clean and renewable materials, which can potentially solve energy loss problems during anti-icing/deicing applications. However, there is a significant challenge for all-day and continuous anti-icing/deicing applications under practical conditions with insufficient sunlight or no sunlight. In this work, a chemical oxidation polymerization method was used to prepare in situ self-wrinkling porous poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)/polypyrrole (PPy) (POP-P) films based on a facile sugar template method. The porous-structured film enhanced light absorption by elongating the optical path for multiple reflections, maintaining an outstanding broad-band solar light absorption (295-2500 nm) and an exceptional photo-thermal effect. The light-to-heat performance showed a temperature enhancement from room temperature to 89.1 °C within 400 s under 1 sun illumination (q_i = 1.0 kW m^-2). In addition, this membrane also exhibited an electro-thermal effect at different voltages due to the Joule effect, and the saturation temperature could reach 75.4 °C at a voltage of 32 V. As an anti-icing/deicing material, this POP-P surface remained ice-free (-25 °C) throughout alternating of day and night, under conditions of a solar intensity of 0.8 kW m^-2 and a voltage of 25 V.

Evaluating the stability and activity of dilute Cu-based alloys for electrochemical CO2 reduction

Cu-based catalysts currently offer the most promising route to actively and selectively produce value-added chemicals via electrochemical reduction of CO₂ (eCO₂R); yet further improvements are required for their wide-scale deployment in carbon mitigation efforts. Here, we systematically investigate a family of dilute Cu-based alloys to explore their viability as active and selective catalysts for eCO₂R through a combined theoretical-experimental approach. Using a quantum-classical modeling approach that accounts for dynamic solvation effects, we assess the stability and activity of model single-atom catalysts under eCO₂R conditions. Our calculations identify that the presence of eCO₂R intermediates, such as CO*, H*, and OH*, may dynamically influence the local catalyst surface composition. Additionally, we identify through binding energy descriptors of the CO*, CHO*, and OCCO* dimer intermediates that certain elements, such as group 13 elements (B, Al, and Ga), enhance the selectivity of C₂₊ species relative to pure Cu by facilitating CO dimerization. The theoretical work is corroborated by preliminary testing of eCO₂R activity and selectivity of candidate dilute Cu-based alloy catalyst films prepared by electron beam evaporation in a zero-gap gas diffusion electrode-based reactor. Of all studied alloys, dilute CuAl was found to be the most active and selective toward C₂₊ products like ethylene, consistent with the theoretical predictions. We attribute the improved performance of dilute CuAl alloys to more favorable dimerization reaction energetics of bound CO species relative to that on pure Cu. In a broader context, the results presented here demonstrate the power of our simulation framework in terms of rational catalyst design.

Reversible Electron Transfer and Substrate Binding Support [NiFe3S4] Ferredoxin as a Protein-Based Model for [NiFe] Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenase

The nickel-iron carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) enzyme catalyzes the reversible and selective interconversion of carbon dioxide (CO₂) to carbon monoxide (CO) with high rates and negligible overpotential. Despite decades of research, many questions remain about this complex metalloenzyme system. A simplified model enzyme could provide substantial insight into biological carbon cycling. Here, we demonstrate reversible electron transfer and binding of both CO and cyanide, a substrate and an inhibitor of CODH, respectively, in a Pyrococcus furiosus (Pf) ferredoxin (Fd) protein that has been reconstituted with a nickel-iron sulfide cluster ([NiFe₃S₄] Fd). The [NiFe₃S₄] cluster mimics the core of the native CODH active site and thus serves as a protein-based structural model of the CODH subsite. Notably, despite binding cyanide, no CO binding is observed for the physiological [Fe₄S₄] clusters in Pf Fd, providing chemical rationale underlying the evolution of a site-differentiated cluster for substrate conversion in native CODH. The demonstration of a substrate-binding metalloprotein model of CODH sets the stage for high-resolution spectroscopic and mechanistic studies correlating the subsite structure and function, ultimately guiding the design of anthropogenic catalysts that harness the advantages of CODH for effective CO₂ reduction.

Synthesis, Structure, and Ammonia Oxidation Catalytic Activity of Ru-NH3 Complexes Containing Multidentate Polypyridyl Ligands

Ammonia (electro)oxidation with molecular catalysts is a rapidly developing topic with wide practical applications ahead. We report here the catalytic ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) activity using [Ru(tda-κ-N³O)(py)₂], 2, (tda^2- is 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-6,6''-dicarboxylate; py is pyridine) as a catalyst precursor. Furthermore, we also describe the rich chemistry associated with the reaction of Ru-tda and Ru-tPa (tPa^-4 is 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-6,6''-diphosphonate) complexes with NH₃ and N₂H₄ using [Ru^II(tda-κ-N³O)(dmso)Cl] (dmso is dimethyl sulfoxide) and [Ru^II(tPa-κ-N³O)(py)₂], 8, as synthetic intermediates, respectively. All the new complexes obtained here were characterized spectroscopically by means of UV-vis and NMR. In addition, a crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was performed for complexes trans-[Ru^II(tda-κ-N³)(py)₂(NH₃)], 4, trans-[Ru^II(tda-κ-N³)(N-NH₂)(py)₂], 5, cis-[Ru^II(tda-κ-N³)(py)(NH₃)₂], 6 (30%), and cis-[Ru^II(tda-k-N³)(dmso)(NH₃)₂], 7 (70%). The AOR activity associated with 2 and 8 as catalyst precursors was studied in organic and aqueous media. For 2, turnover numbers of 7.5 were achieved under bulk electrolysis conditions at an E_app = 1.4 V versus normal hydrogen electrode in acetonitrile. A catalytic cycle is proposed based on electrochemical and kinetic evidence.

Photochemistry of carbon nitrides and heptazine derivatives

We explore the photochemistry of polymeric carbon nitride (C₃N₄), an archetypal organic photocatalyst, and derivatives of its structural monomer unit, heptazine (Hz). Through spectroscopic studies and computational analysis, we have observed that Hz derivatives can engage in non-innocent hydrogen bonding interactions with hydroxylic species. The photochemistry of these complexes is influenced by intermolecular nπ*/ππ* mixing of non-bonding orbitals of each component and the relative energy of intermolecular charge-transfer (CT) states. Coupling of the former to the latter appears to facilitate proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET), resulting in biradical products. We have also observed that Hz derivatives exhibit an extremely rare inverted singlet/triplet energy splitting (ΔE_ST). In violation of Hund's multiplicity rules, the lowest energy singlet (S₁) is stabilized relative to the lowest triplet (T₁) electronic excited state. Exploiting this unique inverted ΔE_ST character has obvious implications for transformational discoveries in solid-state OLED lighting and photovoltaics. Harnessing this inverted ΔE_ST, paired with light-driven intermolecular PCET reactions, may enable molecular transformations relevant for applications ranging from solar energy storage to new classes of non-triplet photoredox catalysts for pharmaceutical development. To this end, we have explored the possibility of optically controlling the photochemistry of Hz derivatives using ultrafast pump-push-probe spectroscopy. In this case, the excited state branching ratios among locally excited states of the chromophore and the reactive intermolecular CT state can be manipulated with an appropriate secondary "push" excitation pulse. These results indicate that we can predictively redirect chemical reactivity with light in this system, which is an avidly sought achievement in the field of photochemistry. Looking forward, we anticipate future opportunities for controlling heptazine photochemistry, including manipulating PCET reactivity with a diverse array of substrates and optically delivering reducing equivalents with, for example, water as a partial source of electrons and protons. Furthermore, we wholly expect that, over the next decade, materials such as Hz derivatives, that exhibit inverted ΔE_ST character, will spawn a significant new research effort in the field of thin-film optoelectronics, where controlling recombination via triplet excitonic states can play a critical role in determining device performance.

Surface-Tailored InP Nanowires via Self-Assembled Au Nanodots for Efficient and Stable Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Evolution

With a band gap close to the Shockley-Quiesser limit and excellent conduction band alignment with the water reduction potential, InP is an ideal photocathode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water reduction. Here, we develop facile self-assembled Au nanodots based on dewetting phenomena as a masking technique to fabricate wafer-scale InP nanowires (NWs) via a top-down approach. In addition, we report dual-function wet treatment using sulfur-dissolved oleylamine (S-OA) to remove a plasma-damaged surface in a controlled manner and stabilize InP NWs against surface corrosion in harsh electrolyte solutions. The resulting InP NW photocathodes exhibit an excellent photocurrent density of 33 mA/cm² under 1 sun illumination in 1 M HCl with a highly stabilized performance without needing additional protection layers. Our approach combining large-area NW fabrication and surface engineering synergistically enhances light harvesting and PEC performance and stability, thereby providing a pathway for the development of efficient and durable InP photoelectrodes in a scalable manner.

Facile Fabrication of a Highly Crystalline and Well-Interconnected Hematite Nanoparticle Photoanode for Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Water Oxidation

Facile and scalable fabrication of α-Fe₂O₃ photoanodes using a precursor solution containing Fe^III ions and 1-ethylimidazole (EIm) in methanol was demonstrated to afford a rigidly adhered α-Fe₂O₃ film with a controllable thickness on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate. EIm ligation to Fe^III ions in the precursor solution brought about high crystallinity of three-dimensionally well-interconnected nanoparticles of α-Fe₂O₃ upon sintering. This is responsible for the 13.6 times higher photocurrent density (at 1.23 V vs reference hydrogen electrode (RHE)) for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation on the α-Fe₂O₃ (w-α-Fe₂O₃) photoanode prepared with EIm compared with that (w/o-α-Fe₂O₃) prepared without EIm. The w-α-Fe₂O₃ photoanode provided the highest charge separation efficiency (η_sep) value of 27% among the state-of-the-art pristine α-Fe₂O₃ photoanodes, providing incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 13% at 420 nm and 1.23 V vs RHE. The superior η_sep for the w-α-Fe₂O₃ photoanode is attributed to the decreased recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers at the grain boundary between nanoparticles, in addition to the higher number of the catalytically active sites and the efficient bulk charge transport in the film, compared with w/o-α-Fe₂O₃.

Intermetallic Compounds: Liquid-Phase Synthesis and Electrocatalytic Applications

Characterized by long-range atomic ordering, well-defined stoichiometry, and controlled crystal structure, intermetallics have attracted increasing attention in the area of chemical synthesis and catalytic applications. Liquid-phase synthesis of intermetallics has arisen as the promising methodology due to its precise control over size, shape, and resistance toward sintering compared with the traditional metallurgy. This short review tends to provide perspectives on the liquid-phase synthesis of intermetallics in terms of both thermodynamics and methodology, as well as its applications in various catalytic reactions. Specifically, basic thermodynamics and kinetics in the synthesis of intermetallics will be first discussed, followed by discussing the main factors that will affect the formation of intermetallics during synthesis. The application of intermetallics in electrocatalysis will be demonstrated case by case at last. We conclude the review with perspectives on the future developments with respect to both synthesis and catalytic applications.

Novel Electrodeposition Method for Cu-In-Cd-Ga Sequential Separation from Waste Solar Cell: Mechanism, Application, and Environmental Impact Assessment

While CIGS solar cell has been experiencing an expanded photovoltaic market and increasing research interest in cell design, its treatment after obsoletion remains an upcoming issue. The heavy metals involved, such as Cd, can threat the environment, while strategic resources, such as rare metals In and Ga, offer a great recycling oppotunity. However, due to its multimetal feature, traditional recycling methodology shows poor separation-extraction efficiency and additional environmental burdens with intense reagent consumption and waste generation. Here, we report a sequential electrodeposition method for pure metal recycling from this Cu-In-Cd-Ga quaternary system in a more environmentally friendly and efficient manner. Stability constant-corrected redox potential supplemented with metal electroreduction tests predicts well the potential window for sequential electrodeposition. Cu and In electrodeposition shows 100% separation with high Coulombic efficiency (>80%), whereas Ga electrodeposition presents slower kinetics and performs better at a pH of 2.5. Environmental impact assessment indicates that the proposed recycling route allows remarkable reduction of global warming and toxicity impacts compared with metal production from virgin mining and reference processes. We further unveiled the applicability of the electrodeposition technique in the context of anthropogenic mineral recycling, emphasizing resource sustainability and cleaner production.

Nano- and Microscale Optical and Electrical Biointerfaces and Their Relevance to Energy Research

Different research fields in energy sciences, such as photovoltaics for solar energy conversion, supercapacitors for energy storage, electrocatalysis for clean energy conversion technologies, and materials-bacterial hybrid for CO₂ fixation have been under intense investigations over the past decade. In recent years, new platforms for biointerface designs have emerged from the energy conversion and storage principles. This paper reviews recent advances in nano- and microscale materials/devices for optical and electrical biointerfaces. First, a connection is drawn between biointerfaces and energy science, and how these two distinct research fields can be connected is summarized. Then, a brief overview of current available tools for biointerface studies is presented. Third, three representative biointerfaces are reviewed, including neural, cardiac, and bacterial biointerfaces, to show how to apply these tools and principles to biointerface design and research. Finally, two possible future research directions for nano- and microscale biointerfaces are proposed.

Photoelectrochemical Water-Splitting Using CuO-Based Electrodes for Hydrogen Production: A Review

The cost-effective, robust, and efficient electrocatalysts for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting has been extensively studied over the past decade to address a solution for the energy crisis. The interesting physicochemical properties of CuO have introduced this promising photocathodic material among the few photocatalysts with a narrow bandgap. This photocatalyst has a high activity for the PEC hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under simulated sunlight irradiation. Here, the recent advancements of CuO-based photoelectrodes, including undoped CuO, doped CuO, and CuO composites, in the PEC water-splitting field, are comprehensively studied. Moreover, the synthesis methods, characterization, and fundamental factors of each classification are discussed in detail. Apart from the exclusive characteristics of CuO-based photoelectrodes, the PEC properties of CuO/2D materials, as groups of the growing nanocomposites in photocurrent-generating devices, are discussed in separate sections. Regarding the particular attention paid to the CuO heterostructure photocathodes, the PEC water splitting application is reviewed and the properties of each group such as electronic structures, defects, bandgap, and hierarchical structures are critically assessed.

Light Management With Grating Structures in Optoelectronic Devices

Ordered and patterned micro/nanostructure arrays have emerged as powerful platforms for optoelectronic devices due to their unique ordered-dependent optical properties. Among various structures, grating structure is widely applied because of its simple fabrication process, easy adjusting of size and morph, and efficient light trapping. Herein, we summarized recent developments of light management with grating structures in optoelectronic devices. Typical mechanisms about the grating structures in optoelectronic devices have been reviewed. Moreover, the applications of grating structures in various optoelectronic devices have been presented. Meanwhile, the remaining bottlenecks and perspectives for future development have been discussed.

Acceptorless Photocatalytic Dehydrogenation of Furfuryl Alcohol (FOL) to Furfural (FAL) and Furoic Acid (FA) over Ti3 C2 Tx /CdS under Visible Light

Acceptorless photocatalytic dehydrogenation is not only a promising alternative to photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen generation but also provides a green and sustainable strategy for the synthesis of value-added organic compounds. In this work, Ti₃ C₂ T_x /CdS nanocomposites were obtained by self-assembly of hexagonal CdS in the presence of preformed Ti₃ C₂ T_x nanosheets, which serves as a photocatalyst for acceptorless dehydrogenation of biomass-derived furfuryl alcohol (FOL) to furfural (FAL) and furoic acid (FA) in neutral and alkaline medium respectively, with simultaneous generation of stoichiometric hydrogen under visible light. Ti₃ C₂ T_x MXene acts as an efficient cocatalyst for the photocatalytic dehydrogenation of FOL over CdS, with an optimum performance achieved over 0.50 wt%Ti₃ C₂ T_x /CdS nanocomposite. This study provides an economic and sustainable strategy for the simultaneous valorization of biomass-derived FOL to produce FAL and FA as well as the production of clean energy hydrogen under mild condition based on noble metal-free semiconductor-based photocatalysts.

FeVO4 Nanopolyhedron Photoelectrodes for Stable and Efficient Water Splitting

Crystalline FeVO₄ nanopolyhedron (FVO NPH) photoelectrodes are successfully prepared by using an in situ solid-state transformation from hydrothermal FeOOH films via adding vanadium precursor and following thermal treatments. The FVO NPH photoelectrodes possess uniformly dispersed polyhedral nanocrystals that directly grow on the conductive substrate with tunable film thicknesses. The unique morphology enables an outstanding photo-electrocatalytic performance, and the optimized FVO NPH photoelectrode, which was annealed at 550 °C for 4 h with a film thickness of ∼560 nm, exhibits excellent photocurrent densities of ∼0.47 and ∼0.68 mA cm^-2 at 1.0 and 1.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl, respectively. After decorating CoPi co-catalyst, FVO/CoPi shows a highly efficient water splitting performance with O₂ and H₂ evolution rates of 7.53 and 15.32 μmol cm^-2  h^-1 , respectively, which are ∼1.88 and ∼1.80 times, respectively, of these of the FVO NPH. The proposed photoelectrodes also show excellently chemical and physical stabilities in solar water splitting. This is the first time reported the preparation of well-organized nanostructured FeVO₄ films, which warrants further optimization studies on morphologies and compositions of FeVO₄ -based photoelectrodes.

Consecutive Ligand-Based Electron Transfer in New Molecular Copper-Based Water Oxidation Catalysts

Water oxidation to dioxygen is one of the key reactions that need to be mastered for the design of practical devices based on water splitting with sunlight. In this context, water oxidation catalysts based on first‐row transition metal complexes are highly desirable due to their low cost and their synthetic versatility and tunability through rational ligand design. A new family of dianionic bpy‐amidate ligands of general formula H₂LNⁿ⁻ (LN is [2,2′‐bipyridine]‐6,6′‐dicarboxamide) substituted with phenyl or naphthyl redox non‐innocent moieties is described. A detailed electrochemical analysis of [(L4)Cu]²⁻ (L4=4,4′‐(([2,2′‐bipyridine]‐6,6′‐dicarbonyl)bis(azanediyl))dibenzenesulfonate) at pH 11.6 shows the presence of a large electrocatalytic wave for water oxidation catalysis at an η=830 mV. Combined experimental and computational evidence, support an all ligand‐based process with redox events taking place at the aryl‐amide groups and at the hydroxido ligands.

Ordered Ti-doped FeVO4 nanoblock photoanode with improved charge properties for efficient solar water splitting

Highly photoactive FeVO₄ photoanodes with ordered nanoblock morphology and uniform Ti-doping were prepared by drop-casting mixed Ti and V precursors onto FeOOH nanorod films and following an annealing process. The results indicate that Ti⁴⁺ is uniformly doped into the FeVO₄ lattice by substituting V⁵⁺ and provides an increased number of O₂^- vacancies. The optimized film thickness and doping level are 620 nm and 0.3%, respectively. Compared to the undoped sample, the Ti-doped photoanode showed ~ 219% enhancement in photocurrent at 1.0 V vs Ag/AgCl under back illumination of AM 1.5, reaching a state-of-the-art value of ~ 1.47 mA cm^-2, and also achieved stable and efficient overall water splitting activity with evolution rates of 28.3 and 14.1 μmol cm^-2h^-1 for H₂ and O₂, respectively. The excellent PEC performance could be attributed to the remarkably enhanced charge carrier concentration and conductivity, and the facilitated charge transfer kinetics across the semiconductor/electrolyte interface, as a result of Ti-doping.

Boosting Photocatalytic Water Oxidation Over Bifunctional Rh0 -Rh3+ Sites

Photocatalytic water splitting provides an economically feasible way for converting solar energy into hydrogen. Great efforts have been devoted to developing efficient photocatalysts; however, the surface catalytic reactions, especially for the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER), still remain a challenge, which limits the overall photocatalytic energy efficiency. Herein, we design a Rh_n cluster cocatalyst, with Rh⁰ -Rh³⁺ sites anchoring the Mo-doped BiVO₄ model photocatalytic system. The resultant photocatalyst enables a high visible-light photocatalytic oxygen production activity of 7.11 mmol g^-1  h^-1 and an apparent quantum efficiency of 29.37 % at 420 nm. The turnover frequency (TOF) achieves 416.73 h^-1 , which is 378 times higher than that of the photocatalyst only with Rh³⁺ species. Operando X-ray absorption characterization shows the OER process on the Rh⁰ -Rh³⁺ sites. The DFT calculations further illustrate a bifunctional OER mechanism over the Rh⁰ -Rh³⁺ sites, in which the oxygen intermediate attacks the Rh³⁺ sites with assistance of a hydrogen atom transfer to the Rh⁰ sites, thus breaking the scaling relationship of various oxygen intermediates.

Enzymes for Efficient CO2 Conversion

The accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as a result of human activities has caused a number of adverse circumstances in the world. For this reason, the proposed solutions lie within the aim of reducing carbon dioxide emissions have been quite valuable. However, as the human activity continues to increase on this planet, the possibility of reducing carbon dioxide emissions decreases with the use of conventional methods. The emergence of compounds than can be used in different fields by converting the released carbon dioxide into different chemicals will construct a fundamental solution to the problem. Although electro-catalysis or photolithography methods have emerged for this purpose, they have not been able to achieve successful results. Alternatively, another proposed solution are enzyme based systems. Among the enzyme-based systems, pyruvate decarboxylase, carbonic anhydrase and dehydrogenases have been the most studied enzymes. Pyruvate dehydrogenase and carbonic anhydrase have either been an expensive method or were incapable of producing the desired result due to the reaction cascade they catalyze. However, the studies reporting the production of industrial chemicals from carbon dioxide using dehydrogenases and in particular, the formate dehydrogenase enzyme, have been remarkable. Moreover, reported studies have shown the existence of more active and stable enzymes, especially the dehydrogenase family that can be identified from the biome. In addition to this, their redesign through protein engineering can have an immense contribution to the increased use of enzyme-based methods in CO₂ reduction, resulting in an enormous expansion of the industrial capacity.

Graphene-Based Electrodes in a Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Produced by Rapid Low-Pressure Combined Gas Plasma Treatments

The development of high-power density vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) with high energy efficiencies (EEs) is crucial for the widespread dissemination of this energy storage technology. In this work, we report the production of novel hierarchical carbonaceous nanomaterials for VRFB electrodes with high catalytic activity toward the vanadium redox reactions (VO²⁺/VO₂ ⁺ and V²⁺/V³⁺). The electrode materials are produced through a rapid (minute timescale) low-pressure combined gas plasma treatment of graphite felts (GFs) in an inductively coupled radio frequency reactor. By systematically studying the effects of either pure gases (O₂ and N₂) or their combination at different gas plasma pressures, the electrodes are optimized to reduce their kinetic polarization for the VRFB redox reactions. To further enhance the catalytic surface area of the electrodes, single-/few-layer graphene, produced by highly scalable wet-jet milling exfoliation of graphite, is incorporated into the GFs through an infiltration method in the presence of a polymeric binder. Depending on the thickness of the proton-exchange membrane (Nafion 115 or Nafion XL), our optimized VRFB configurations can efficiently operate within a wide range of charge/discharge current densities, exhibiting energy efficiencies up to 93.9%, 90.8%, 88.3%, 85.6%, 77.6%, and 69.5% at 25, 50, 75, 100, 200, and 300 mA cm^-2, respectively. Our technology is cost-competitive when compared to commercial ones (additional electrode costs < 100 € m^-2) and shows EEs rivalling the record-high values reported for efficient systems to date. Our work remarks on the importance to study modified plasma conditions or plasma methods alternative to those reported previously (e.g., atmospheric plasmas) to improve further the electrode performances of the current VRFB systems.

Electrokinetic and in situ spectroscopic investigations of CO electrochemical reduction on copper

Rigorous electrokinetic results are key to understanding the reaction mechanisms in the electrochemical CO reduction reaction (CORR), however, most reported results are compromised by the CO mass transport limitation. In this work, we determined mass transport-free CORR kinetics by employing a gas-diffusion type electrode and identified dependence of catalyst surface speciation on the electrolyte pH using in-situ surface enhanced vibrational spectroscopies. Based on the measured Tafel slopes and reaction orders, we demonstrate that the formation rates of C₂₊ products are most likely limited by the dimerization of CO adsorbate. CH₄ production is limited by the CO hydrogenation step via a proton coupled electron transfer and a chemical hydrogenation step of CO by adsorbed hydrogen atom in weakly (7 < pH < 11) and strongly (pH > 11) alkaline electrolytes, respectively. Further, CH₄ and C₂₊ products are likely formed on distinct types of active sites.

Isolation of a Ru(IV) side-on peroxo intermediate in the water oxidation reaction

The electrons that nature uses to reduce CO₂ during photosynthesis come from water oxidation at the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II. Molecular catalysts have served as models to understand its mechanism, in particular the O-O bond-forming reaction, which is still not fully understood. Here we report a Ru(IV) side-on peroxo complex that serves as a 'missing link' for the species that form after the rate-determining O-O bond-forming step. The Ru(IV) side-on peroxo complex (η²-1^iv-OO) is generated from the isolated Ru(IV) oxo complex (1^iv=O) in the presence of an excess of oxidant. The oxidation (IV) and spin state (singlet) of η²-1^iv-OO were determined by a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. ¹⁸O- and ²H-labelling studies evidence the direct evolution of O₂ through the nucleophilic attack of a H₂O molecule on the highly electrophilic metal-oxo species via the formation of η²-1^iv-OO. These studies demonstrate water nucleophilic attack as a viable mechanism for O-O bond formation, as previously proposed based on indirect evidence.

Grey hematite photoanodes decrease the onset potential in photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting for solar energy conversion into chemical fuels has attracted intense research attention. The semiconductor hematite (α-Fe₂O₃), with its earth abundance, chemical stability, and efficient light harvesting, stands out as a promising photoanode material. Unfortunately, its electron affinity is too deep for overall water splitting, requiring additional bias. Interface engineering has been used to reduce the onset potential of hematite photoelectrode. Here we focus instead on energy band engineering hematite by shrinking the crystal lattice, and the water-splitting onset potential can be decreased from 1.14 to 0.61 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode. It is the lowest record reported for a pristine hematite photoanode without surface modification. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic properties suggest the redistribution of 3d electrons in the as-synthesized grey hematite electrode. Density function theory studies herein show that the smaller-lattice-constant hematite benefits from raised energy bands, which accounts for the reduced onset potential.

Solar Energy Conversion through Thylakoid Membranes Wired by Osmium Redox Polymer and Indium Tin Oxide Nanoparticles

For several decades, much attention has been paid to thylakoid membranes (TMs) as photocatalysts for converting solar light to electricity. Despite extensive research, current technology provides only limited photocurrents. Here, a novel method based on TM-composite material was developed for achieving high photocurrent. When a thin film composed of TMs, osmium redox polymer (Os-RP), and indium tin oxide nanoparticles (ITOnp) was formed on a porous graphite surface, appreciable photocurrent as high as 0.5 mA cm^-2 was achieved at 0.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Each component plays its own role in transferring electrons from TMs to the anode, resulting in sharp drop in photocurrent with missing any component. Optimization between these three components showed 1 : 0.5 : 30 (TM/Os-RP/ITOnp) was the best ratio. Action spectra confirmed that TMs was the origin of photocurrent. It was inferred from blocking experiments using 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea as an inhibitor that about 41 % of photocurrent was transferred from Q_A in photosystem II to the electrode via Os-RP and ITOnp. Quantum efficiencies at 430 and 660 nm were 12.2 and 18.5 %, respectively. Turnover frequency for water oxidation depended upon the amount of the composite. A complete cell with Pt/C cathode produced P_max of 122 μW cm^-2 at 758 μA cm^-2 under one sun illumination, which is the highest power density to our knowledge. This study opened a possibility of using TMs as photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.

Carbon Quantum Dots Promote Coupled Valence Engineering of V2 O5 Nanobelts for High-Performance Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) have acquired the researchers' curiosity owing to their harmlessness, cost effectiveness and high theoretical capacity of Zn anode. However, desirable cathode materials with high-capacity and high-rate are still scarce. In this work, the formation of carbon quantum dots induced vanadium pentoxide nanobelts was demonstrated via a facile one-step hydrothermal method for ZIBs. It exhibited an excellent Zn ion storage capacity of 460 mA h g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1 , superior rate capability and stable cycling performance (above 85 % capacity retention over 1500 cycles at 4 A g^-1 ). The electrochemical kinetics and zinc ion storage mechanism were also considered. An efficient architecture-coupled valence engineering in the hybrid cathode was proposed to improve the electric conductivity, Zn ion diffusion rate, and cycling stability for ZIBs. This work may be a great motivation for further research on V₂ O₅ or other vanadium-based materials for high-performance ZIBs.

Textile Triboelectric Nanogenerators Simultaneously Harvesting Multiple "High-Entropy" Kinetic Energies

Distributed renewable kinetic energies are ubiquitous but with irregular amplitudes and frequencies, which, as one category of "high-entropy" energies, are crucial for next-generation self-powered electronics. Herein, we present a flexible waterproof dual-mode textile triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), which can simultaneously scavenge multiple "high-entropy" kinetic energies, including human motions, raindrops, and winds. A freestanding-mode textile TENG (F-TENG) and a contact-separation-mode textile TENG (CS-TENG) are integrated together. The structure parameters of the textile TENG are optimized to improve the output performances. The raindrop can generate a voltage of up to ∼4.3 V and a current of about ∼6 μA, while human motion can generate a voltage of over 120 V and a peak power density of ∼500 mW m^-2. The scavenged electrical energies can be stored in capacitors for powering small electronics. Therefore, we demonstrated a facile preparation of a TENG-based energy textile that is highly promising for kinetic energy harvesting and self-powered electronics.

Direct Utilization of Photoinduced Charge Carriers to Promote Electrochemical Energy Storage

Electrochemical energy storage has been regarded as one of the most promising strategies for next-generation energy consumption. To meet the increasing demands of urban electric vehicles, development of green and efficient charging technologies by exploitation of solar energy should be considered for outdoor charging in the future. Herein, a light-sensitive material (copper foam-supported copper oxide/nickel copper oxides nanosheets arrays, namely CF@CuO_x @NiCuO_x NAs) with hierarchical nanostructures to promote electrochemical charge storage is specifically fabricated. The as-fabricated NAs have demonstrated a high areal specific capacity of 1.452 C cm^-2 under light irradiation with a light power of 1.76 W, which is 44.8% higher than the capacity obtained without light. Such areal specific capacity (1.452 C cm^-2 ) is much higher than that of the conventional supercapacitor structure using a similar active redox component reported recently (NiO nanosheets array@Co₃ O₄ -NiO FTNs: maximum areal capacity of 623.5 mF cm^-2 at 2 mA cm^-2 ). This photo-enhancement for charge storage can be attributed to the combination of photo-sensitive Cu₂ O and pseudo-active NiO components. Hence, this work may provide new possibilities for direct utilization of sustainable solar energy to realize enhanced capability for energy storage devices.

Dual-Functional Aligned and Interconnected Graphite Nanoplatelet Networks for Accelerating Solar Thermal Energy Harvesting and Storage within Phase Change Materials

Solar thermal energy conversion and storage within phase change materials (PCMs) can overcome solar radiation intermittency to enable continuous operation of many heating-related processes. However, the energy-harvesting performance of current storage systems is always limited by low efficiencies in either solar thermal energy conversion or thermal transport within PCMs. Although PCM-based nanocomposites can address one or both of these issues, achieving high-performance composites with simultaneously enhanced photothermal performance and thermal transport capacity remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate that dual-functional aligned and interconnected graphite nanoplatelet networks (AIGNNs) yield the synergistic enhancement of interfacial photothermal conversion and thermal transport within PCMs to accelerate the solar thermal energy harvesting and storage. The AIGNNs include the naked part as the three-dimensional optical absorber and the incorporated part as thermally conductive pathways within PCMs. First, a phase change composite composed of the AIGNNs and the solid-solid PCM of polyhydric alcohol is synthesized using a facile three-step method, and shows 400% thermal conductivity enhancement for per 1 wt % graphite loading compared to pristine PCMs. After the elaborate surface treatment, a small part of the graphite networks is in situ exposed as the 3D optical absorber to boost the surface full-spectrum sunlight absorptivity up to 95%. This dual function design takes full advantage of the integrated AIGNNs in terms of both photothermal conversion and thermal transport capacities, superior to the traditional coating-enhanced photothermal conversion. This work offers a promising route to accelerating solar thermal energy harvesting and storage within PCMs.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Water Oxidation Activity of Isomeric Ru Complexes

The synthesis and characterization of the isomeric ruthenium complexes with the general formula cis- and trans-[Ru(trpy)(qc)X]ⁿ⁺ (trpy is 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine, qc is 8-quinolinecarboxylate, cis-1 and trans-1, X = Cl, n = 0; cis-2 and trans-2, X=OH₂, n = 1) with respect to the relative disposition of the carboxylate and X ligands are reported. For comparison purposes, another set of ruthenium complexes with general formula cis- and trans-[Ru(trpy)(pic)(OH₂)]⁺ (pic is 2-picolinate (cis-3, trans-3)) have been prepared. The complexes with a qc ligand show a more distorted geometry compared to the complexes with a pic ligand. In all of the cases, the trans isomers show lower potential values for all of the redox couples relative to the cis isomers. Complexes cis-2 and trans-2 with six-member chelate rings show higher catalytic activity than cis-3 and trans-3. Overall, it was shown that the electronic perturbation to the metal center exerted by different orientation and geometry of the ligands significantly influences both redox properties and catalytic performance.

Semiconductors as Effective Electrodes for Dye Sensitized Solar Cell Applications

As proficient photovoltaic devices, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have received considerable consideration in recent years. In order to accomplish advanced solar-to-electricity efficiency and increase long-term functioning stability, improvements in the configuration structure of DSSCs are essential, as is an understanding of their elementary principles. This work discusses the application of different semiconductor constituents designed for effective DSSCs. The main parameters crucial to fabrication of DSSC electrodes in nano-porous semiconductor structures are high surface area and large pore size. Different inorganic semiconductor materials are used to load sensitizer dyes, which absorb a lot of light and induce high photocurrent for efficient DSSCs. The first section of the review covers energy sources, photovoltaics, and the benefits of solar cells in daily life, while the second part includes the various types of semiconductors applied in DSSC applications. The final section provides a brief review of future perspectives for DSSCs and a survey of semiconductor materials proposed for solar cell applications.

Oxygen-Evolution Reaction by a Palladium Foil in the Presence of Iron

Herein, we investigate the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) and electrochemistry of a Pd foil in the presence of iron under alkaline conditions (pH ≈ 13). As a source of iron, K₂FeO₄ is employed, which is soluble under alkaline conditions in contrast to many other Fe salts. Immediately after reacting with the Pd foil, [FeO₄]^2- causes a significant increase in OER and changes in the electrochemistry of Pd. In the absence of this Fe source and under OER, Pd(IV) is stable, and hole accumulation occurs, while in the presence of Fe this accumulation of stored charges can be used for OER. A Density Functional Theory (DFT) based thermodynamic model suggests an oxygen bridge vacancy as an active site on the surface of PdO₂ and an OER overpotential of 0.42 V. A substitution of Pd with Fe at this active site reduces the calculated OER overpotential to 0.35 V. The 70 mV decrease in overpotential is in good agreement with the experimentally measured decrease of 60 mV in the onset potential. In the presence of small amounts of Fe salt, our results point toward the Fe doping of PdO₂ rather than extra framework FeO_x (Fe(OH)₃, FeO(OH), and KFeO₂) species on top of PdO₂ as the active OER sites.

Solvothermal synthesis of porphyrin-ferrocenyl conjugated microporous polymer nanospheres for shape-stable phase change materials with improved latent heat and cyclability

Organic phase change materials (PCMs) have attracted considerable attention for thermal energy storage applications because of their non-toxicity, suitable working temperature range and excellent thermal/chemical stability. However, most traditional organic PCMs have small molecular structures and are prone to leakage during fusion. To address this problem and enhance the shape-stability of organic PCMs, nanosphere-shaped porphyrin-ferrocenyl conjugated microporous polymers (PFCMPs) with high porosity (~ 650 m²/g) were solvothermally synthesized using a Diels-Alder reaction between 1,1'-ferrocenedicarboxaldehyde and pyrrole in the presence of glacial acetic acid and anhydrous Lewis acids (FeCl₃, AlCl₃, and CuCl₂). The PFCMPs were then encapsulated with PCMs, that is, 1-octadecanol (ODA), to prepare the composite materials of ODA@PFCMPs. The optimized composite exhibited a high latent heat (up to 153.8 J/g), excellent reversibility (negligible change in latent heat upon 100 cycles of heating-cooling), good shape stability, and long heat storage durability (425 s), making it a promising candidate for solar thermal energy engineering and management.
