Abstract
The organometallic-mediated radical polymerization (OMRP) of vinyl acetate (VAc) and its OMR copolymerization (OMRcoP) with tert-butyl 2-trifluoromethylacrylate (MAF-TBE) mediated by Co(SAL)₂ (SAL = 2-formylphenolato or deprotonated salicylaldehyde) produced relatively well-defined PVAc and poly(VAc-alt-MAF-TBE) copolymers at moderate temperature (<40 °C) in bulk. The resulting alternating copolymer was characterized by ¹H-, 13C- and 19F-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, and by size exclusion chromatography. The linear first-order kinetic plot, the linear evolutions of the molar mass with total monomer conversion, and the relatively low dispersity (Đ~1.55) of the resulting copolymers suggest that this cobalt complex provides some degree of control over the copolymerization of VAc and MAF-TBE. Compared to the previously investigated cobalt complex OMRP mediators having a fully oxygen-based first coordination sphere, this study emphasizes a few peculiarities of Co(SAL)₂: a lower ability to trap radical chains as compared to Co(acac)₂ and the absence of catalytic chain transfer reactions, which dominates polymerizations carried in the presence of 9-oxyphenalenone cobalt derivative.

Allylthioketone Mediated Free Radical Polymerization of Methacrylates. Polymers (Basel) 2017; 9:polym9110608. Abstract
By combination of high trapping free radical efficiency of the thioketone and resonance of the allylic radical, a new type of mediating agent, 1,3,3-triphenylprop-2-ene-1-thione (TPPT) has been successfully synthesized, and then is used to study controlled free radical polymerization of methacrylates. Very stable TPPT radicals at the end of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are detected in the polymerization of MMA using TPPT and AIBN as the control agent and initiator. The MALDI-TOF MS spectra are used to identify terminal groups of the resultant poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA), and major component of the obtained polymer has the structure, (CH3)2(CN)C-PGMA-C7H9O3. Chain extension reaction tests ascertain formation of the dead polymers during the polymer storage and purification process of the polymers. Owing to very slow fragmentation reaction of the TPPT-terminated polymethacrylate radical and addition reaction of this radical with a primary radical, the growing chain radicals are difficult to be regenerated, leading to an unobvious change of the molecular weight with monomer conversion. The molecular weights of polymers can be controlled by the ratios of monomer/initiator and TPPT/initiator. However, the first order kinetics of the polymerization and the polymers with narrow polydispersity are obtained, and these phenomena are discussed. This study provides useful information on how to design a better controlling agent.

Investigation of the Adsorption of Amphipathic macroRAFT Agents onto Montmorillonite Clay. LANGMUIR : THE ACS JOURNAL OF SURFACES AND COLLOIDS 2017; 33:9598-9608. Abstract
Recently, there has been significant interest in the use of the reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) technique to generate a variety of organic/inorganic colloidal composite particles in aqueous dispersed media using the so-called macroRAFT-assisted encapsulating emulsion polymerization (REEP) strategy. In this process, special attention should be paid to the adsorption of the macromolecular RAFT (macroRAFT) agent onto the inorganic particles, as it determines the final particle morphology and can also influence latex stability. In this work, different amphipathic macroRAFT agents were synthesized by RAFT, and their adsorption onto commercial Montmorillonite clay Cloisite Na+ (MMT) was studied by means of adsorption isotherms. Three types of macroRAFT agents were considered: a nonionic one based on poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGA) and n-butyl acrylate (BA), anionic ones, including a block copolymer and random copolymers, based on acrylic acid (AA), BA and PEGA, and cationic ones based on 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), BA and PEGA. Six adsorption isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Tempkin, Redlich-Peterson, Sips, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) were adjusted to the experimental isotherms. The nonionic macroRAFT agent formed a monolayer on the clay surface with a maximum adsorption capacity of 400 mg g-1 at pH 8, as determined from the Sips adsorption model. Adsorption of the AA-based macroRAFT agents onto MMT was moderate at alkaline pH due to electrostatic repulsions, but increased with decreasing pH. The DMAEMA-based macroRAFT agents displayed a much stronger interaction with the oppositely charged MMT surface at acidic pH due to electrostatic interactions, and the concentration of adsorbed macroRAFT agent reached values as high as 800 mg g-1. The BET model fitted the experimental data relatively well indicating multilayer adsorption promoted by the presence of the hydrophobic BA units. In addition, the cationic macroRAFT agents afforded stable MMT/macroRAFT agent complexes as evaluated by dynamic light scattering and zeta potential analyses.

Abstract
Colloidal stability of polymeric latex particles was studied in the presence of oppositely charged layered double hydroxide (LDH) platelets of different interlayer anions. Adsorption of the LDH particles led to charge neutralization and to overcharging of the latex at appropriate concentrations. Mixing stable colloidal suspensions of individual particles results in rapid aggregation once the LDH adsorption neutralizes the negative charges of the polymer spheres, while stable suspensions were observed at high and low LDH doses. The governing interparticle interactions included repulsive electrical double layer forces as well as van der Waals and patch-charge attractions, whose strength depended on the amount of LDH particles adsorbed on the latex surface. The type of the LDH interlayer anions did not affect the colloidal stability of the samples. Structural investigation of the obtained latex-LDH composites revealed that the polymer spheres were completely coated with the inorganic platelets once their concentration was sufficiently high. These results are especially important for designing synthetic routes for hybrid systems in suspensions, where stable colloids are required for uniform film-formation and for the homogeneous distribution of the inorganic filler within the composite materials.

Heparin-binding copolymer reverses effects of unfractionated heparin, enoxaparin, and fondaparinux in rats and mice. Transl Res 2016; 177:98-112.e10. Abstract
The parenteral anticoagulants may cause uncontrolled and life-threatening bleeding. Protamine, the only registered heparin antidote, is partially effective against low-molecular weight heparins, completely ineffective against fondaparinux and may cause unacceptable toxicity. Therefore, we aimed to develop a synthetic compound for safe and efficient neutralization of all parenteral anticoagulants. We synthesized pegylated PMAPTAC block copolymers, and then, we selected a lead heparin-binding copolymer (HBC). We assessed the effectiveness of HBC in the model of arterial thrombosis electrically induced in the carotid artery of rats by measuring thrombus weight, bleeding time, activated partial thromboplastin time, activated clotting time, and anti-factor Xa activity. The intravital tissue distribution, the cardiorespiratory, and organ toxicity were monitored. HBC diminished antithrombotic and anticoagulant effects of unfractionated heparin. Moreover, it stopped bleeding and completely reversed the enhancement of clotting times and anti-factor Xa activity caused by enoxaparin or fondaparinux. We observed slight pulmonary congestion and cell infiltration, but the cardiorespiratory parameters remained unchanged. We found a strong signal of fluorescently-labeled HBC in the urine, and a weaker in the liver and in the kidney. No signs of hepatic or nephrotoxicity were observed in the blood biochemistry or histopathologic examination. We developed a copolymer efficiently neutralizing effects of heparins in the living organism, which shows a very promising efficacy/safety profile and may help in the management of uncontrolled bleeding resulting from an anticoagulant injection. HBC could enable the safe replacement of unfractionated heparin with low-molecular weight heparins in patients undergoing cardiac surgery and complex vascular procedures.
