Abstract
The total synthesis of (+/-)-powelline (13 linear steps in an overall yield of 6%) and (+/-)-buphanidrine (14 linear steps and a 6% overall yield) and has been achieved using a novel approach to the crinane skeleton. An organocatalytic oxidative coupling allowed direct construction of the key quaternary carbon-to-aryl bond in high yield allowing rapid access to the target alkaloids.

Abstract
Alpha-arylated carbonyl compounds are commonly occurring motifs in biologically interesting molecules and are therefore of high interest to the pharmaceutical industry. Conventional procedures for their synthesis often result in complications in scale-up, such as the use of stoichiometric amounts of toxic reagents and harsh reaction conditions. Over the last decade, significant efforts have been directed towards the development of metal-catalyzed alpha-arylations of carbonyl compounds as an alternative synthetic approach that operates under milder conditions. This Review summarizes the developments in this area to date, with a focus on how the substrate scope has been expanded through selection of the most appropriate synthetic method, such as the careful choice of ligands, precatalysts, bases, and reaction conditions.

Abstract
A reconsideration of the (1)H NMR spectra of cationic transition metal complexes exhibiting the features of cyclophanes on the basis of Mislow's classification of topic groups arrives at the conclusion that the spectral changes triggered by chiral counterions reflect an intracationic diastereotopication of enantiotopic protons rather than the existence of pairs of long-lived diastereomeric ion pairs.

Abstract
A cinchona alkaloid-catalyzed, highly enantioselective, alpha-amination of oxindoles has been developed. The reaction is general, operationally simple, and affords the desired products in high yields with good to excellent enantioselectivity. Significantly, this study provides a general catalytic method for the construction of a C-N bond at the C3 position of oxindoles as well as for the creation of a nitrogen-containing, tetrasubstituted chiral center.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbenes have become universal ligands in organometallic and inorganic coordination chemistry. They not only bind to any transition metal, be it in low or high oxidation states, but also to main group elements such as beryllium, sulfur, and iodine. Because of their specific coordination chemistry, N-heterocyclic carbenes both stabilize and activate metal centers in quite different key catalytic steps of organic syntheses, for example, C-H activation, C-C, C-H, C-O, and C-N bond formation. There is now ample evidence that in the new generation of organometallic catalysts the established ligand class of organophosphanes will be supplemented and, in part, replaced by N-heterocyclic carbenes. Over the past few years, this chemistry has been the field of vivid scientific competition, and yielded previously unexpected successes in key areas of homogeneous catalysis. From the work in numerous academic laboratories and in industry, a revolutionary turning point in oraganometallic catalysis is emerging.

Abstract
The development of enantiomerically-resolved, axially-chiral seven-membered N-heterocyclic carbene ((7)NHC) ligands for palladium is described. These (7)NHC ligands are derived from enatiomerically pure 2,2'-diamino-6,6'-dimethylbiphenyl, which is transformed via a synthetic sequence consisting of ortho-arylation, N-alkylation, and cyclization to afford seven-membered-ring amidinium salts. Synthesis of the 7-membered amidinium salts benefits from microwave irradiation, and in-situ metalation of the amidinium salts yields (7)NHC-Pd(II) complexes. The chiral (7)NHC-Pd complexes were examined as chiral catalysts under aerobic conditions in two intramolecular oxidative amination reactions of alkenes. In one case, enantioselectivities up to 63% e.e. were obtained, while the other substrate underwent cyclization to afford essentially racemic products. The catalytic data compare favorably to results obtained with a Pd(II) catalyst bearing a chiral five-membered-ring NHC ligand and, thereby, highlight the potential significance of this new class of chiral NHC ligands.

Abstract
The rate of indolyl O- to C-acetyl or carboxyl rearrangement is accelerated by the electron-withdrawing N-diphenylacetyl group (DPA) using the conformationally restricted chiral catalysts AcOLeDMAP (12b) and BnOLeDMAP (13b). Highly enantioselective conversion to quaternary C-acetylated and C-carboxylated oxindoles is observed, even for substrates containing branched substituents. The rearrangement of the carboxylate substrates 19 occurs with complementary enantiofacial selectivity using catalyst 13b compared to the acetyl migrations of 16 catalyzed by 12b. Access to N-unsubstituted oxindoles is demonstrated by DPA cleavage with Et(2)NH.
