Abstract
The present work describes the synthesis, characterization, and application of a new ion-tagged iron catalyst. The catalyst was employed in the Biginelli reaction with impressive performance. High yields have been achieved when the reaction was carried out in imidazolium-based ionic liquids (BMI⋅PF6, BMI⋅NTf2, and BMI⋅BF4), thus showing that the ionic-liquid effects play a role in the reaction. Moreover, the ion-tagged catalyst could be recovered and reused up to eight times without any noticeable loss in activity. Mechanistic studies performed by using high-resolution electrospray-ionization quadrupole-time-of-flight mass (HR-EI-QTOF) spectrometry and kinetic experiments indicate only one reaction pathway and rule out the other two possibilities under the development conditions. The theoretical calculations are in accordance with the proposed mechanism of action of the iron catalyst. Finally, the 37 dihydropyrimidinone derivatives, products of the Biginelli reaction, had their cytotoxicity evaluated in assays against MCF-7 cancer cell linages with encouraging results of some derivatives, which were virtually non-toxic against healthy cell linages (fibroblasts).

Abstract
A microwave-assisted regioselective reaction dealing with arylglyoxal monohydrate, diverse N-aryl enaminones, and indoles to achieve 3,2'- and 3,3'-bis-indoles by varying a substituted indole substrate is reported. The 2-unsubstituted indoles resulted in the 3,2'-bis-indole skeleton, whereas indoles bearing a methyl or phenyl group at C2 led to the 3,3'-bis-indoles with simultaneous formation of three sigma-bonds. The procedures feature excellent regioselectivity, short reaction times, convenient one-pot manner, and operational simplicity.

Abstract
This paper describes the use of common Lewis acids supported in imidazolium-based ionic liquids as the catalysts to promote the Biginelli reaction. The ionic liquid effect and the reaction mechanism are discussed on the basis of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and theoretical calculations. Indeed, the results showed that the ionic medium plays a fundamental role in the synthesis of biologically active dihydropyrimidinones due to the stabilization of the charged intermediates proposed in the mechanism. When conducted in an ionic liquid as solvent, the reaction mechanism is more complex than in other Lewis acid catalyzed Biginelli reactions.

Abstract
The classical Hantzsch reaction is one of the simplest and most economical methods for the synthesis of biologically important and pharmacologically useful 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives. Bismuth nitrate pentahydrate under microwave irradiation is proven to act as a very efficient catalyst for a one-pot, three-component synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridines in excellent yields from diverse amines/ammonium acetate, aldehydes and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds within 1–3 min under solvent-free conditions. The present environmentally benign procedure for the synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridines is suitable for library synthesis and it will find application in the synthesis of potent biologically active molecules. The excellent yield and extreme rapidity of the method is due to a concurrent effect of the catalyst and microwave irradiation.

Abstract
This work reports and discusses the influence of four phosphonium-based ionic liquids (PhILs), namely trihexyl(tetradecyl) phosphonium dicyanamide, [P(6,6,6,14)][dca]; trihexyl(tetradecyl) phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [P(6,6,6,14)][Tf(2)N]; tetrabutyl phosphonium bromide, [P(4,4,4,4)][Br]; and tetrabutyl phosphonium chloride, [P(4,4,4,4)][Cl], on some of the chemical, physical and biological properties of a biomedical-grade suspension of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The main goal of this work was to evaluate the capacity of these PhILs to modify some of the properties of neat PVC, in particular those that may allow their use as potential alternatives to traditional phthalate-based plasticizers in PVC biomedical applications. PVC films having different PhIL compositions (0, 5, 10 and 20 wt.%) were prepared (by solvent film casting) and characterised by Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamical mechanical thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray/electron probe microanalysis, X-ray diffraction, transmittance, permeability towards oxygen and carbon dioxide, thermal degradation, contact angle measurement, water and vapour uptake, leachability and biocompatibility (haemolytic potential, thrombogenicity and cytotoxicity). A conventional organic plasticizer (di-isononyl phthalate) was used for comparison purposes. The results obtained showed that it was possible to change the neat PVC hydrophobicity, and consequently its water uptake capacity and plasticizer leachability, just by changing the PhIL employed and its composition. It was also possible to significantly change the thermal and mechanical properties of PVC films by choosing appropriate PhIL cation/anion combinations. However, a specific PhIL may not always be capable of simultaneously keeping and/or improving both physical properties. In addition, ionic halide salts were found to promote PVC dehydrochlorination. Finally, none of the prepared materials presented toxicity against Caco-2 cells, though pure [P(6,6,6,14)][dca] decreased HepG2 cells viability. Moreover, PVC films with [P(6,6,6,14)][dca] and [P(4,4,4,4)][Cl] were found to be haemolytic and thus these PhILs must be avoided as PVC modifiers if biomedical applications are envisaged. In conclusion, from all the PhILs tested, [P(6,6,6,14)][Tf(2)N] showed the most promising results regarding blood compatibility, leaching and permeability to gases of PVC films. The results presented are a strong indicator that adequate PhILs may be successfully employed as PVC multi-functional plasticizers for a wide range of potential applications, including those in the biomedical field.

Abstract
A novel and efficient diversity-oriented synthetic approach was employed to access the benzo[d]oxazol-5-yl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole on ionic liquid support, which helps to absorb microwave irradiation. In this paper, we successfully coupled 4-hydroxy-3-nitrobenzoic acid onto ionic liquid-immobilized o-phenylenediamine, which subsequently underwent an acid mediated, ring closure reaction leading to benzimidazole derivatives. After hydrogenation of the nitro group to an amine, the resulting ionic liquid conjugate was reacted with 1,1-thiocarbonyldiimidazols to yield an ionic liquid tagged-benzoxazol. Final skeletal diversity of the present scaffold was further achieved by S-alkylation with alkyl and aryl bromides. The benzo[d]oxazol-5-yl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole was finally cleaved smoothly from the ionic liquid support with sodium methoxide in methanol under microwave irradiation. This methodology has provided access to a small, diverse library by straightforward and simple operations and could be applied readily in various drug discovery programs.

Abstract
A collection of smart multicomponent reactions (MCRs) with continuative post condensation cyclizations (PCCs) is presented to construct conventional three- to seven-membered heterocyclic compounds in diversity oriented syntheses (DOS). These will provide a high degree of applying economical and ecological advantages as well as of practicability. Water, ionic liquids, and solvent-less syntheses as well as use of various forms of energy as microwave and ultrasonic irradiation are examined and discussed.
