Effects of H2O2 Concentration on Formation of Uranyl Peroxide Species Probed by Dissolution of Uranium Nitride and Uranium Dioxide

Dissolution of uranium materials in alkaline aqueous conditions containing H₂O₂ results in uranyl peroxide species in solution, including anionic uranyl peroxide cage clusters. Uranyl peroxide cage clusters are generally highly soluble in water, where they persist as aqueous macroanions. Previous studies indicate that uranyl cluster speciation and dissolution of uranium materials is impacted by the concentration of alkali metal in solution, but in these studies, high concentrations of H₂O₂ were used. Herein, the role of hydrogen peroxide concentration is examined relative to the dissolution of powdered UN and UO₂. Lower initial H₂O₂ concentrations reduce dissolution of UO₂ and UN and tend to produce simple (small) uranyl peroxide species rather the highly soluble uranyl peroxide clusters. H₂O₂ availability will have implications for uranyl speciation and solubility where spent nuclear fuel is in contact with water and where alkaline peroxide conditions are used in dissolution of nuclear material.

HPW/PDMAEMA-b-PMAA/ZIF-8 Ternary Lamellar Composite and the Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue

PDMAEMA-b-PMAA block copolymers were prepared by the sequential RAFT polymerization of DMAEMA and tBMA, followed by hydrolysis. Phosphotungstic acid (HPW) was anchored to the PDMAEMA blocks through electrostatic interactions and the as-obtained HPW/PDMAEMA-b-PMAA was added to the synthesis of ZIF-8. During the formation of ZIF-8, the PMAA blocks coordinated to the Zn²⁺ ions through their carboxy groups, along with the HPW groups that were anchored to the PDMAEMA blocks. In this way, the block copolymer could consolidate the interactions between HPW and ZIF-8 and prevent the leakage of HPW. Finally, the HPW/PDMAEMA-b-PMAA/ZIF-8 ternary lamellar composite was obtained and the structure of the HPW/PDMAEMA-b-PMAA/ZIF-8 hybrid material was characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As a photocatalyst, the HPW/PDMAEMA-b-PMAA/ZIF-8 ternary lamellar composite showed excellent photoactivity for the degradation of methylene blue (MB). The rate of degradation of MB was 0.0240 min^-1 , which was 7.5-times higher than that of commercially available P25 (0.0032 min^-1 ). In the presence of H₂ O₂ , the kinetic degradation parameters of the composite reached 0.0634 min^-1 , which was about 19.8-times higher than that of P25.

Guest Controlled Pillar[5]arene and Polyoxometalate Based Two-Dimensional Nanostructures toward Reversible Iodine Capture

The two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures comprised of polyoxometalate based building blocks are of great value in nanoarchitectures, which have unique properties and widespread potential applications, but it is still challenging in mature preparation. Herein a new strategy to build Cr(III) centered Anderson type polyoxometalate 2D nanostructures based on the modulation of host-guest interaction between cationic pillar[5]arenes and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) in aqueous media was exploited in this work. Through regulating stoichiometry of SDS, the morphology of assemblies vary from nanobones to 2D nanosheets. The fine assembled structure was discovered by combined ¹H NMR, SAXS, and element analyses. The nanomaterials can be used as adsorbents for I₂ in various solutions, including n-hexane, cyclohexane, water, and chloroform, where the polyoxometalates play a key role in the effective adsorption of iodine since they can expand the interspace between pillar[5]arenes in the as-prepared nanostructure. Furthermore, such adsorbents are easily regenerated and reused as iodine can be released spontaneously from nanobones@I₂ and nanosheets@I₂ solids when being immersed in dimethyl sulfoxide.

Emergence of complex chiral coordination clusters {CuNa12} by using multiple ligands under oxidizing conditions

Two chiral coordination clusters {CuNa₁₂}, which can only be revealed by synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction, were assembled unexpectedly from a system resembling the long-studied Fehling's solution. As the intricate structures themselves indicate, the ingenuity of using multiple ligands should inspire new strategies to fabricate new compounds.

A new phosphotungstate-supported rhenium carbonyl derivative: synthesis, characterization and catalytic selective oxidation of thiophenes

We synthesized a new phosphotungstate-supported rhenium carbonyl derivative, [N(CH₃)₄]₆H₄[P₂W₁₇O₆₂{Re(CO)₃}₂]·25H₂O, existing the first {Re₂} fragment. Moreover, it also exhibits high efficiency for the selective oxidation of thiophenes.

Pyridine boronic acid-polyoxometalate based porous hybrid for efficient depletion of high abundant glycoproteins in plasma

A porous hybrid, namely PW₁₂@TiO₂-Si(Et)Si/Pba, is fabricated by the modification of PW₁₂@TiO₂-Si(Et)Si with pyridine boronic acid via a solvothermal method. The covalent interactions between the boronic acid group of the hybrid and the glycosylated site of proteins provide the as-prepared hybrid with favorable adsorption performance towards glycoproteins. The adsorption behaviors of glycoproteins onto the hybrid fit well with the Langmuir model, and the adsorption capacities for glycoprotein IgG and Trf are high, up to 348.5 mg g^-1 and 262.6 mg g^-1, respectively. Thus, a protocol for the depletion of high abundant glycoproteins from human plasma is proposed. The percentage contents of Trf, IgG, haptoglobinis and IgM are reduced from 7.38%, 5.5%, 3.01% and 1.02% to 0.951%, 4.7%, 0.126% and 0.76%, respectively. 85 low abundant proteins are identified from the raw plasma after the depletion of the high abundance proteins, demonstrating the potential of PW₁₂@TiO₂-Si(Et)Si/Pba hybrid in proteomic studies.

Multi-electron reduction of Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate films onto metallic, semiconducting and dielectric substrates

The investigation of conditions allowing multi-electron reduction and reoxidation of polyoxometalate (POM) films onto solid substrates is considered an issue of critical importance for their successful incorporation in electronic devices, different types of sensors and catalytic systems. In the present paper, the rich multi-electron redox chemistry of films of Wells-Dawson ammonium salts, namely (NH4)6P2Mo18O62 and (NH4)6P2W18O62, on top of metallic (Al), semiconducting (ITO) and dielectric (SiO2) substrates under ambient conditions is investigated. The respective Keggin heteropolyacids, H3PMo12O40 and H3PW12O40, are also investigated for comparison. On Al substrates, the Wells-Dawson ammonium salts are found to be significantly more reduced (4-6e-) compared to the respective Keggin heteropolyacids (∼2e-), in accordance with their deeper lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level. Subsequent thermal treatment in air results in reoxidation of the initially highly reduced POM films. Similar behavior is found on ITO substrates, but in initially less reduced (2-4e-) Wells-Dawson POM films. On the other hand, on SiO2 substrates, the thermal reduction of (NH4)6P2Mo18O62 film is observed and attributed to the thermal oxidation of ammonium counterions by [P2Mo18O62]6- anions. Overall, the multi-electron reduction of Wells-Dawson ammonium salts onto metallic and semiconducting substrates (Al, ITO) is determined by the relative position of the LUMO level of POMs in relation to the Fermi level of the substrate (i.e. substrate work function) and affected in a synergistic way by the presence of ammonium counterions. In contrast, on dielectric substrates (SiO2) the reduction of Wells-Dawson POMs ((NH4)6P2Mo18O62) is attributed only to the oxidation of ammonium counterions.

Synthesis and characterization of self-assembled inorganic-organic hybrid arsenotungstates

A series of 12 inorganic-organic hybrid 4f-substituted arsenotungstates decorated with 3d-based complexes along with acetate bridging, viz. {[Cu₂(H₂O)(1,10-phen)₂(μ-CH₃COO)₂]₄[Ln₂(H₂O)₂(μ-CH₃COO)₂(α-AsW₁₁O₃₉)₂]}^2- (Ln^III = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu), have been synthesized. These compounds were isolated using a one-pot synthetic strategy with copper, lanthanoid, trilacunary arsenotungstate and 1,10-phenanthroline as precursors. They were characterized using various analytical techniques, such as single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), powder XRD (PXRD), Fourier transform IR (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In all these compounds, a dinuclear Ln₂(ac)₂ moiety is sandwiched between two monolacunary [AsW₁₁O₃₉]^7- polyoxometalates (POMs), where the Ln₂(ac)₂ moiety is comprised of two acetate ligands in a μ-κO,O':κO fashion. Moreover, the anion is decorated by a copper-phenanthroline-acetate complex through a terminal O atom of the polyanion.

An unprecedented Zr-containing polyoxometalate tetramer with mixed trilacunary/dilacunary Keggin-type polyoxotungstate units

A novel zirconium(IV)-substituted tetramer polyoxotungstate, H₆K₄Na₁₆[Zr₄(β-GeW₁₀O₃₈)₂(A-α-PW₉O₃₄)₂]·37H₂O, was synthesized hydrothermally and characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic P2/n space group. The most remarkable feature is that the centrosymmetric Zr-based polyoxotungstate tetramer consists of dilacunary Keggin-type germanotungstate and trilacunary Keggin-type phosphotungstate units that are linked by Zr^IV ions.

Two new POM-based compounds modified by lanthanide–Schiff base complexes with interesting NLO properties

Two POM-based lanthanide derivatives, namely {triaqua[2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(semicarbazone)-κ5 O,N,N′,N′′,O′]terbium(III)}-μ-oxido-[tricosa-μ2-oxido-dodecaoxido-μ12-phosphato-dodecamolybdenum(VI)] pentahydrate (1), [Tb(C11H15N7O2)(H2O)3][PMo12O40]·5H2O, and the dysprosium(III) analogue (2), have been isolated successfully by the reaction of Keggin–POM [PMo12O40]3− (abbreviated as PMo12 ), the Ln3+ ion and the Schiff base 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(semicarbazone) (DAPSC) ligand under hydrothermal conditions. [Ln(DAPSC)(H2O)3][PMo12O40]·5H2O is a PMo12 -supported cluster featuring a lanthanide–Schiff base complex [denoted Ln– L (Schiff base)]. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the LnIII ion is in a distorted tricapped trigonal prismatic arrangement, coordinated by six O atoms and three N atoms. Two O atoms and three N atoms are provided by one DAPSC ligand, while the additional O atoms originate from a PMo12 cluster and three water molecules. Hydrogen-bonding interactions between adjacent clusters form an interesting three-dimensional supramolecular structure. The identities of 1 and 2 were characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and powder X-ray diffraction. Interestingly, both compounds possess excellent two-photon absorption (TPA) responses to the third-order nonlinear optics (NLO) (2264 GM for 1 and 941 GM for 2), suggesting that they have potential applications in the field of nonlinear optics (NLO). To our knowledge, 1 and 2 are the first POM-based Ln– L (Schiff base) complexes showing excellent two-photon responses. Meanwhile, the electrochemical properties of both compounds were studied in detail.

All-Inorganic Ionic Porous Material Based on Giant Spherical Polyoxometalates Containing Core-Shell K6 @K36 -Water Cage

This work demonstrates that the use of high-negative and high-symmetry lacunary polyoxometalates (POMs) for the clustering of alkali metal ions is a feasible strategy not only for the formation of rare high-nuclearity alkali-metal clusters but also for the construction of new-type all-inorganic ionic porous materials. By the strategy, an unprecedented high-nuclearity K-H₂ O cluster {K₄₂ (H₂ O)₆₀ } with core-shell K₆ @K₃₆ configuration is stabilized by 8 C_3v -symmetry trivacant POMs [GeW₉ O₃₄ ]^10- , forming a novel giant ionic alkali-metal-POM composite cluster {K₄₂ Ge₈ W₇₂ O₂₇₂ (H₂ O)₆₀ } with more than 100 metal centers. The incorporated 42-nuclearity K-H₂ O cluster {K₄₂ (H₂ O)₆₀ } exhibits the highest-nuclearity alkali-metal-water cluster known to date in POM chemistry. Further, the giant {K₄₂ Ge₈ W₇₂ O₂₇₂ (H₂ O)₆₀ } clusters can be linked by another kind of alkali metal ions Na⁺ to generate a fascinating three-dimensional all-inorganic ionic porous framework with high chemical stability, proton conductivity, and water vapor adsorption.

Direct observation of the ZrIV interaction with the carboxamide bond in a noncovalent complex between Hen Egg White Lysozyme and a Zr-substituted Keggin polyoxometalate

The successful cocrystallization of the noncovalent complex formed between (Et2NH2)8[{α-PW11O39Zr-(μ-OH)(H2O)}2]·7H2O Keggin polyoxometalate (2) and Hen Egg White Lysozyme (HEWL) protein is reported. The resulting structural model revealed interaction between monomeric [Zr(PW11O39)]4−(1), which is a postulated catalytically active species, and the protein in two positions in the asymmetric unit. The first position (occupancy 36%) confirms the previously observed binding sites on the protein surface, whereas the second position (occupancy 14%) provides novel insights into the hydrolytic mechanisms of ZrIV-substituted polyoxometalates. The new interaction site occurs at the Asn65 residue, which is directly next to the Asp66–Gly67 peptide bond that was identified recently as a cleavage site in the polyoxometalate-catalysed hydrolysis of HEWL. Furthermore, in this newly discovered binding site, the monomeric polyoxometalate 1 is observed to bind directly to the side chain of the Asn65 residue. This binding of ZrIV as a Lewis-acid metal to the carbonyl O atom of the Asn65 side chain is very similar to the intermediate state proposed in density functional theory (DFT) studies in which ZrIV activates the peptide bond via interaction with its carbonyl O atom, and can be thus regarded as a model for interaction between ZrIV and a peptide bond.

A Supramolecular Catalyst Self-Assembled From Polyoxometalates and Cationic Pillar[5]arenes for the Room Temperature Oxidation of Aldehydes

Oxidizing aldehydes to generate carboxylic acids is a crucial reaction in nature and in chemical industry. The aldehyde oxidation, an easily achieved process in liver cells, is inert toward autoxidation in industrial production and difficultly achieved under enzymatic condition (in water, at pH 7, at room temperature). Herein, we prepared a supramolecular catalyst which are nanospheres assembled in aqueous media by chromium centered Anderson polyoxometalates Na₃[CrMo₆O₁₈(OH)₃] (namely, CrMo₆) and cationic pillar[5]arenes (namely, P5A) with 10 positive charges which can be used as the phase transfer catalysts (PTCs). This supramolecular catalyst was exploited on aldehydes oxidation under enzymatic condition with relatively good conversion. Through DLS monitoring, the diameters of nanospheres were variable while changing the charge ratios of the ionic complexes (P5A-CrMo₆), and it is probably because of the closer charge ratios causing the more compact assemblies. Also, the nano-morphologies were monitored by TEM and SEM, and the nanostructures were characterized by zeta potential, the X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), elemental analysis.

A comprehensive approach providing a new synthetic route for bimetallic electrocatalysts via isoPOMs [M/Rh(Cp*)4W8O32] (M = Rh (1) and Ir (2))

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are highly versatile materials if paired with various conducting supports. We here present a new prospective approach for obtaining advanced electrocatalytic systems via POMs (1 and 2) nanostructured on Ni foam (NF) to give bimetallic nanohybrid composite materials M0.4Ni0.6/WO3 (M = Rh (3) or Ir (4)). By this pathway, two rare isopolyoctatungstate-based organometallic clusters [Hx(MCp*)4W8O32]·yH2O (in 1, M = Rh, x = 8, y = 23; in 2, M = Ir, x = 4, y = 17.33) have been synthesized via one-pot reactions using [Cp*MCl2]2 (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, M = Rh or Ir) and Na2WO4·2H2O in basic conditions. Compounds 1 and 2 were successfully nanostructured on the surface of commercially available NF and were thermally reduced to M0.4Ni0.6/WO3 (M = Rh (3) or Ir (4)) after annealing at 400 °C for 8 h in a 15% H2/N2 atmosphere. Electrodes modified with the POMs 3 and 4 exhibited remarkable HER activities in a 1 M KOH solution and achieved a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at low overpotentials of about 67 and 35 mV versus RHE, with Tafel slopes of 56 and 34 mV dec-1, respectively.
