Multienzyme-Like Polyoxometalate-Based Single-Atom Enzymes for Cancer-Specific Therapy Through Acid-Triggered Nontoxicity-to-Toxicity Transition

Single-atom enzymes (SAzymes) exhibit great potential for chemodynamic therapy (CDT); while, general application is still challenged by their instability and unavoidable side effects during delivery. Herein, a manganese-based polyoxometalate single-atom enzyme (Mn-POM SAE) is first introduced into tumor-specific CDT, which exhibits tumor microenvironment (TME)-activated transition of nontoxicity-to-toxicity. Different from traditional POM materials, the aggregates of low-toxic Mn-POM SAE nanospheres are obtained at neutral conditions, facilitating efficient delivery and avoiding toxicity problems in normal tissues. Under acid TME conditions, these nanospheres are degraded into smaller units of toxic Mn(II)-PW11; thus, initiating cancer cell-specific therapy. The released active units of Mn(II)-PW11 exhibit excellent multienzyme-like activities (including peroxidase (POD)-like, oxidase (OXD)-like, catalase (CAT)-like, and glutathione peroxidase (Gpx)-like activities) for the synergistic cancer therapy due to the stabilized high valence Mn species (MnIII/MnIV). As demonstrated by both intracellular evaluations and in vivo experiments, ROS is generated to cause damage to lysosome membranes, further facilitating acidification and impaired autophagy to enhance cancer therapy. This study provides a detailed investigation on the acid-triggered releasing of active units and the electron transfer in multienzyme-mimic-like therapy, further enlarging the application of POMs from catalytical engineering into cancer therapy.

Unravelling the Bi-Functional Electrocatalytic Properties of {Mo72Fe30} Polyoxometalate Nanostructures for Overall Water Splitting Using Scanning Electrochemical Microscope and Electrochemical Gating Methods

This study reports the use of Keplerate-type {Mo72Fe30} polyoxometalate (POMs) nanostructures as a bi-functional-electrocatalyst for HER and OER in an alkaline medium with a lower overpotential (135 mV for HER and 264 mV for OER), and excellent electrochemical stability. The bi-functional catalytic properties of {Mo72Fe30} POM are studied using a scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) via current mapping using substrate generation and tip collection mode. Furthermore, the bipolar nature of the {Mo72Fe30} POM nano-electrocatalysts is studied using the electrochemical gating via simultaneous monitoring of the electrochemical (cell) and electrical ({Mo72Fe30} POM) signals. Next, a prototype water electrolyzer fabricated using {Mo72Fe30} POM electrocatalysts showed they can drive 10 mA cm-2 with a low cell voltage of 1.62 V in lab-scale test conditions. Notably, the {Mo72Fe30} POM electrolyzers' performance assessment based on recommended conditions for industrial aspects shows that they require a very low overpotential of 1.89 V to drive 500 mA cm-2, highlighting their promising candidature toward clean-hydrogen production.

Enhancing Energy Storage Capacity of 3D Carbon Electrodes Using Soft Landing of Molecular Redox Mediators

The incorporation of redox-active species into the electric double layer is a powerful strategy for enhancing the energy density of supercapacitors. Polyoxometalates (POM) are a class of stable, redox-active species with multielectron activity, which is often used to tailor the properties of electrochemical interfaces. Traditional synthetic methods often result in interfaces containing a mixture of POM anions, unreactive counter ions, and neutral species. This leads to degradation in electrochemical performance due to aggregation and increased interfacial resistance. Another significant challenge is achieving the uniform and stable anchoring of POM anions on substrates to ensure the long-term stability of the electrochemical interface. These challenges are addressed by developing a mass spectrometry-based subambient deposition strategy for the selective deposition of POM anions onto engineered 3D porous carbon electrodes. Furthermore, positively charged functional groups are introduced on the electrode surface for efficient trapping of POM anions. This approach enables the deposition of purified POM anions uniformly through the pores of the 3D porous carbon electrode, resulting in unprecedented increase in the energy storage capacity of the electrodes. The study highlights the critical role of well-defined electrochemical interfaces in energy storage applications and offers a powerful method to achieve this through selective ion deposition.

Rapid, Massive, and Green Synthesis of Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks to Fabricate POMOF/PAN Nanofiber Membranes for Selective Filtration of Cationic Dyes

Developing high-efficiency membrane materials for the rapid removal of organic dyes is crucial but remains a challenge. Polyoxometalates (POMs) clusters with anionic structures are promising candidates for the removal of cationic dyes via electrostatic interactions. However, their shortcomings, such as their solubility and inability to be mass-produced, hinder their application in water pollution treatment. Here, we propose a simple and green strategy utilizing the room temperature stirring method to mass produce nanoscale polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks (POMOFs) with porous rhomboid-shaped dodecahedral and hexagonal prism structures. The products were labeled as POMOF1 (POMOF-PW12) and POMOF2 (POMOF-PMo12). Subsequently, a series of x wt% POMOF1/PAN (x = 0, 3, 5, and 10) nanofiber membranes (NFMs) were prepared using electrospinning technology, where polyacrylonitrile (PAN) acts as a "glue" molecule facilitating the bonding of POMOF1 nanoparticles. The as-prepared samples were comprehensively characterized and exhibited obvious water stability, as well as rapid selective adsorption filtration performance towards cationic dyes. The 5 wt% POMOF1/PAN NFM possessed the highest removal efficiency of 96.7% for RhB, 95.8% for MB, and 86.4% for CV dyes, which realized the selective separation over 95% of positively charged dyes from the mixed solution. The adsorption mechanism was explained using FT-IR, SEM, Zeta potential, and adsorption kinetics model, which proved that separation was determined via electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. Moreover, the POMOF1/PAN membrane presented an outstanding recoverable and stable removal rate after four cycles. This study provides a new direction for the systematic design and manufacture of membrane separation materials with outstanding properties for contaminant removal.

Hybrid Membrane of Sulfonated Poly(aryl ether ketone sulfone) Modified by Molybdenum Clusters with Enhanced Proton Conductivity

Developing novel proton exchange membranes (PEMs) with low cost and superior performance to replace Nafion is of great significance. Polyoxometalate-doped sulfonated poly(aryl ether ketone sulfone) (SPAEKS) allows for the amalgamation of the advantages in each constituent, thereby achieving an optimized performance for the hybrid PEMs. Herein, the hybrid membranes by introducing 2MeIm-{Mo132} into SPAEKS are obtained. Excellent hydrophilic properties of 2MeIm-{Mo132} can help more water molecules be retained in the hybrid membrane, providing abundant carriers for proton transport and proton hopping sites to build successive hydrophilic channels, thus lowering the energy barrier, accelerating the proton migration, and significantly fostering the proton conductivity of hybrid membranes. Especially, SP-2MIMo132-5 exhibits an enhanced proton conductivity of 75 mS cm-1 at 80 °C, which is 82.9% higher than pristine SPAEKS membrane. Additionally, this membrane is suitable for application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells, and a maximum power density of 266.2 mW cm-2 can be achieved at 80 °C, which far exceeds that of pristine SPAEKS membrane (54.6 mW cm-2). This work demonstrates that polyoxometalate-based clusters can serve as excellent proton conduction sites, opening up the choice of proton conduction carriers in hybrid membrane design and providing a novel idea to manufacture high-performance PEMs.

Boosting Oxygen Reduction Reaction Selectivity in Metal Nanoparticles with Polyoxometalates

The lack of selectivity toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in metal nanoparticles can be linked to the generation of intermediates. This constitutes a crucial constraint on the performance of specific electrochemical devices, such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. To boost selectivity of metal nanoparticles, a novel methodology that harnesses the unique electrocatalytic properties of polyoxometalates (POM) to scavenge undesired intermediates of the ORR (such as HO2 -) promoting selectivity is proposed. It involves the covalent functionalization of metal nanoparticle's surface with an electrochemically active capping layer containing a new sulfur-functionalized vanadium-based POM (AuNP@POM). To demonstrate this approach, preformed thiolate Au(111) nanoparticles with a relatively poor ORR selectivity are chosen. The dispersion of AuNP@POM on the surface of carbon nanofibers (CNF) enhances oxygen diffusion, and therefore the ORR activity. The resulting electrocatalyst (AuNP@POM/CNF) exhibits superior stability against impurities like methanol and a higher pH tolerance range compared to the standard commercial Pt/C. The work demonstrates for the first time, the use of a POM-based electrochemically active capping layer to switch on the selectivity of poorly selective gold nanoparticles, offering a promising avenue for the preparation of electrocatalyst materials with improved selectivity, performance, and stability for ORR-based devices.

Laser-Induced Preparation of Anderson-Type Polyoxometalate-Derived Sulfide/Oxide Electrocatalysts for Electrochemical Water Oxidation

Developing cost-effective and high-active electrocatalysts is vital to enhance the electrocatalytic performance for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, traditional pyrolysis methods require complicated procedures, exact temperatures, and long reaction times, leading to high costs and low yields of electrocatalysts in potential industrial applications. Herein, a rapid and economic laser-induced preparation strategy is proposed to synthesize three bimetallic sulfide/oxide composites (MMoOS, M=Fe, Co, and Ni) on a nickel foam (NF) substrate. A focused CO2 laser with high energy is applied to decompose Anderson-type polyoxometalate (POM)-based precursors, enabling the creation of abundant heteropore and defective structures in the MMoOS composites that have multi-components of MS/Mo4O11/MoS2. Remarkably, owing to the structural interactions between the active species, FeMoOS shows superior electrocatalytic performance for OER in an alkaline medium, exhibiting a low overpotential of 240 mV at 50 mA cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 79 mV dec-1, and good durability for 80 h. Physical characterizations after OER imply that partially dissolved Mo-based species and new-formed NiO/NiOOH can effectively uncover abundant active sites, fasten charge transfer, and modify defective structures. This work provides a rapid laser-induced irradiation method for the synthesis of POM-derived nanocomposites as promoted electrocatalysts.

Multifunctional Polyoxometalates-Based Ionohydrogels toward Flexible Electronics

Multifunctional flexible electronics present tremendous opportunities in the rapidly evolving digital age. One potential avenue to realize this goal is the integration of polyoxometalates (POMs) and ionic liquid-based gels (ILGs), but the challenge of macrophase separation due to poor compatibility, especially caused by repulsion between like-charged units, poses a significant hurdle. Herein, the possibilities of producing diverse and homogenous POMs-containing ionohydrogels by nanoconfining POMs and ionic liquids (ILs) within an elastomer-like polyzwitterionic hydrogel using a simple one-step random copolymerization method, are expanded vastly. The incorporation of polyzwitterions provides a nanoconfined microenvironment and effectively modulates excessive electrostatic interactions in POMs/ILs/H2 O blending system, facilitating a phase transition from macrophase separation to a submillimeter scale worm-like microphase-separation system. Moreover, combining POMs-reinforced ionohydrogels with a developed integrated self-powered sensing system utilizing strain sensors and Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors has enabled efficient energy storage and detection of external strain changes with high precision. This work not only provides guidelines for manipulating morphology within phase-separation gelation systems, but also paves the way for developing versatile POMs-based ionohydrogels for state-of-the-art smart flexible electronics.

Gold Nanoparticles Capped with a Novel Titanium(IV)-Containing Polyoxomolybdate Cluster: Selective and Enhanced Bactericidal Effect Against Escherichia coli

Bacterial infections are a public health threat of increasing concern in medical care systems; hence, the search for novel strategies to lower the use of antibiotics and their harmful effects becomes imperative. Herein, the antimicrobial performance of four polyoxometalate (POM)-stabilized gold nanoparticles (Au@POM) against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) as Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria models, respectively, is studied. The bactericidal studies performed, both in planktonic and sessile forms, evidence the antimicrobial potential of these hybrid nanostructures with selectivity toward Gram-negative species. In particular, the Au@GeMoTi composite with the novel [Ti2 (HGeMo7 O28 )2 ]10- POM capping ligand exhibits outstanding bactericidal efficiency with a minimum inhibitory concentration of just 3.12 µm for the E. coli strain, thus outperforming the other three Au@POM counterparts. GeMoTi represents the fourth example of a water-soluble TiIV -containing polyoxomolybdate, and among them, the first sandwich-type structure having heteroatoms in high-oxidation state. The evaluation of the bactericidal mechanisms of action points to the cell membrane hyperpolarization, disruption, and subsequent nucleotide leakage and the low cytotoxicity exerted on five different cell lines at antimicrobial doses demonstrates the antibiotic-like character. These studies highlight the successful design and development of a new POM-based nanomaterial able to eradicate Gram-negative bacteria without damaging mammalian cells.

Electron-Sponge Nature of Polyoxometalates for Next-Generation Electrocatalytic Water Splitting and Nonvolatile Neuromorphic Devices

Designing next-generation molecular devices typically necessitates plentiful oxygen-bearing sites to facilitate multiple-electron transfers. However, the theoretical limits of existing materials for energy conversion and information storage devices make it inevitable to hunt for new competitors. Polyoxometalates (POMs), a unique class of metal-oxide clusters, have been investigated exponentially due to their structural diversity and tunable redox properties. POMs behave as electron-sponges owing to their intrinsic ability of reversible uptake-release of multiple electrons. In this review, numerous POM-frameworks together with desired features of a contender material and inherited properties of POMs are systematically discussed to demonstrate how and why the electron-sponge-like nature of POMs is beneficial to design next-generation water oxidation/reduction electrocatalysts, and neuromorphic nonvolatile resistance-switching random-access memory devices. The aim is to converge the attention of scientists who are working separately on electrocatalysts and memory devices, on a point that, although the application types are different, they all hunt for a material that could exhibit electron-sponge-like feature to realize boosted performances and thus, encouraging the scientists of two completely different fields to explore POMs as imperious contenders to design next-generation nanodevices. Finally, challenges and promising prospects in this research field are also highlighted.

ZIFs-Derived Hollow Nanostructures via a Strong/Weak Coetching Strategy for Long-Life Rechargeable Zn-Air Batteries

Recently, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) composites have emerged as promising precursors for synthesizing hollow-structured N-doped carbon-based noble-metal materials with diverse structures and compositions. Here, a strong/weak competitive coordination strategy is presented for synthesizing high-performance electrocatalysts with hollow features. During the competitive coordination process, the cubic zeolitic-imidazole framework-8 (Cube-8)@ZIF-67 with core-shell structures are transformed into Cube-8@ZIF-67@PF/POM with yolk-shell nanostructures employing phosphomolybdic acid (POM) and potassium ferricyanide (PF) as the strong chelator and the weak chelator, respectively. After calcination, the hollow Mo/Fe/Co@NC catalyst exhibits superior performance in both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Interestingly, the Mo/Fe/Co@NC catalyst exhibits efficient electrocatalytic performance for Zn-air batteries (ZABs), with a high power density (≈150 mW cm-2 ) and superior cycling life (≈500 h) compared to commercial platinum/carbon (Pt/C) and ruthenium dioxide (RuO2 ) mixture benchmarks catalysts. In addition, the density functional theory further proves that after the introduction of Mo and Fe atoms, the adsorption energy with the adsorption intermediates is weakened by adjusting the d-band center, thus weakening the reaction barrier and promoting the reaction kinetics of OER. Undoubtedly, this study presents novel insights into the fabrication of ZIFs-derived hollow structure bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for clean-energy diverse applications.

Collective Effects of Multiple Fluorine Atoms Causing π-philic Characteristic within a Caged Polyoxometalate Framework

Perfluorination brings about distinctive properties arising from the unusual nature of the F element, which have been extensively developed in materials science and chemistry. Herein we report that the construction of F-rich inner space within a hollowed Mo132 O372 cage ([Mo132 O372 (OCOR)30 (H2 O)72 ]42- ) leads to the emergence of unique guest binding activities in encapsulation. Prominently, the trifluoroacetate-modified cage (R=CF3 , 2) having as many as 90 F groups inside favors trapping cyclopentadiene (Cp), which is hardly trapped by the non-fluorinated counterpart (R=CH3 , 1). Systematic studies using related hydrocarbons show that the amount of the encapsulated guest is correlated with the unsaturation degree of the guests, implying the involvement of the attractive interaction of the CF3 -modified interior wall with the guest π-electron clouds. Control experiments using the semi-fluorinated analogues (R=CF2 H, CFH2 ) reveal that the perfluorination is a critical factor to facilitate the Cp encapsulation by 2, indicating that collective effects of polar C-F bonds spreading over the interior surface, rather than the polarity of the individual C-F bonds, are responsible. We also provide a successful example of the physical molecular confinement within the cage through the "ship-in-a-bottle" Diels-Alder reaction between trapped diene and dienophile.

Supramolecular Self-Assembly of Proteins Promoted by Hybrid Polyoxometalates

Controlling the formation of supramolecular protein assemblies and endowing them with new properties that can lead to novel functional materials is an important but challenging task. In this work, a new hybrid polyoxometalate is designed to induce controlled intermolecular bridging between biotin-binding proteins. Such bridging interactions lead to the formation of supramolecular protein assemblies incorporating metal-oxo clusters that go from several nanometers in diameter up to the micron range. Insights into the self-assembly process and the nature of the resulting biohybrid materials are obtained by a combination of Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), along with fluorescence, UV-vis, and Circular Dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. The formation of hybrid supramolecular assemblies is determined to be driven by biotin binding to the protein and electrostatic interactions between the anionic metal-oxo cluster and the protein, both of which also influence the stability of the resulting assemblies. As a result, the rate of formation, size, and stability of the supramolecular assemblies can be tuned by controlling the electrostatic interactions between the cluster and the protein (e.g., through varying the ionic strength of the solution), thereby paving the way toward biomaterials with tunable assembly and disassembly properties.

Polyoxometalates as Potential Artificial Enzymes toward Biological Applications

Artificial enzymes, as alternatives to natural enzymes, have attracted enormous attention in the fields of catalysis, biosensing, diagnostics, and therapeutics because of their high stability and low cost. Polyoxometalates (POMs), a class of inorganic metal oxides, have recently shown great potential in mimicking enzyme activity due to their well-defined structure, tunable composition, high catalytic efficiency, and easy storage properties. This review focuses on the recent advances in POM-based artificial enzymes. Different types of POMs and their derivatives-based mimetic enzyme functions are covered, as well as the corresponding catalytic mechanisms (where available). An overview of the broad applications of representative POM-based artificial enzymes from biosensing to theragnostic is provided. Insight into the current challenges and the future directions for POMs-based artificial enzymes is discussed.

Electron Delocalization and Transfer Across Polyoxometalates-Based Subnanomaterials in Catalytic Reactions

Due to their identical building blocks and high surface-to-volume ratio, subnanomaterials exhibit significant properties compared to their bulk nanomaterial counterparts. The interactions between these building blocks can result in either equal or unequal sharing of electrons, leading to electron transfer in heterojunctions or electron delocalization within symmetric structures. Clusters, possessing electronic properties akin to atoms, can serve as reservoirs of electrons to stabilize crucial intermediates in catalytic reactions. This perspective provides a novel understanding of well-defined subnanomaterials with distinct architectures, such as cluster-based constructions and co-assembled heterojunctions, emphasizing the relationship between electronic structures and catalytic properties. The objective is to provide novel perspectives on the realm of subnanomaterials and cluster-based architectures.

Switchable Redox and Thermo-Responsive Supramolecular Polymers Based on Cyclodextrin-Polyoxometalate Tandem

Supramolecular polymers built from stimuli-responsive host-guest interactions represent an attractive way of tailoring smart materials. Herein, we exploit the chaotropic effect of polyoxometalates and related host-guest properties to design unconventional polymer systems with reversible redox and thermo-responsive sol-gel transition. These supramolecular networks result from the association of cyclodextrin-based oligomers and Keggin-type POMs acting as electro-active crosslinking agents. The structure and the dynamics of such self-assembly systems have been investigated using a multiscale approach involving MALDI-TOF, viscosity measurements, cyclic voltammetry, 1 H-NMR (1D and DOSY), and Small-Angle X-ray Scattering. Our results reveal that the chaotropic effect corresponds to a powerful and efficient force that can be used to induce responsiveness in hybrid supramolecular oligomeric systems.

Reduction-Induced Uptake of Cs+ in Metal-Organic Frameworks Loaded with Polyoxometalates

Materials for Cs+ adsorption continue to be important for the treatment of various solutions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with large specific surface areas promise adsorption properties for various gases, vapors, and ions. However, the utilization of MOFs for alkali ion capture, specifically, Cs+ capture is still in its infancy. Herein, MOFs are hybridized with polyoxometalates (POMs) to study the effect of i) MOF type, ii) POM type, and iii) POM loading amounts on Cs+ capture. In particular, the composite of ZIF-8 and [α-PMo12 O40 ]3- (PMo12 /ZIF-8) adsorbed Cs+ ions effectively when compared to pristine ZIF-8. In addition, the reduction of Mo within the POM from MoVI to MoV by ascorbic acid during the Cs+ uptake process doubled the Cs+ uptake capacity of PMo12 /ZIF-8. This observation can be attributed to the increased overall negative charge of the POM facilitating Cs+ uptake to compensate for the charge imbalance. Hybridization with other MOFs (MIL-101 and UiO-66) largely suppresses the Cs+ uptake, highlighting the importance of hydrophobicity in Cs+ capture. Furthermore, PMo12 /ZIF-8 led to an outstanding Cs+ uptake (291.5 mg g-1 ) with high selectivity (79.6%) from quinary mixtures of alkali metal cations even among other representative porous materials (Prussian blue and zeolites).

Evaluation of Phosphopolyoxometalates with Mixed Addenda (Mo, W, V) as Corrosion Inhibitors for Steels

Nowadays, choosing a corrosion inhibitor is not only based on efficiency, but must also consider the toxicity of the compound, the impact on the environment, and, obviously, the regulations in the field. In the last two decades, a special class of substances has begun to be studied, namely polyoxometalates (POMs). Their electronic properties and redox characteristics make the polyoxometalates potential candidates to be used in many electrochemical processes, and as potential corrosion inhibitors. Electrochemical methods such as a Tafel extrapolation plot, chronopotentiometry, or gravimetry have been used to establish the capacity of corrosion inhibition of S235 and SS304 steels in the presence of phosphovanadomolibdate acid (@PMoV) and phosphovanadotungstate acid (@PWV) in 0.5 M sulphuric acid solution. The inhibition efficiency for S235 steel is about 90.6% for @PMoV, and 69.5% for @PWV after 24 h of immersion. In the case of SS304 steel, polyoxometalates have similar effects: the inhibition degree, as a function of Flade potential, is 4.66 for @PMoV; better than 3.26 for @PWV, with both proving the passivant effect.

Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework-Polyoxometalate-Based System for Electrochromic Devices

A porous hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) structure was explored for the first time in the design of high-performance electrochromic devices (ECDs) using polyoxometalate (POM)-based charge-balancing layers as counter electrodes (CEs). The novelty of this work lies in the facile construction of films using small molecule-based EC materials to form a porous HOF structure. A full-cell model of an ECD was constructed by utilizing a POM-based CE to optimize the voltage distribution on the HOF-coated working electrode (WE). The addition of PW12O403- (PW12) on CE significantly enhanced the voltage distribution on EC electrodes and decreased the overvoltage on the WE, further preventing the formation of non-EC species and resulting in a 3.3-fold increase in the lifetime of the ECD. The optical contrast was enhanced from 47% (TiO2 only) to 68%, and the coloration efficiency was enhanced from 185 (TiO2 only) to 373 cm2 C-1. The optimized voltage distribution on the WE, leading to the fast response time and high optical EC contrast, could be explained by the charge-balancing effect. Overall, this new finding provides a robust framework for designing high-performance ECDs, taking advantage of the porous morphology and potential matching of the HOF and PW12.

Self-Assembled Construction of Ion-Selective Nanobarriers in Electrolyte Membranes for Redox Flow Batteries

Ion-conducting membranes (ICMs) with high selectivity are important components in redox flow batteries. However it is still a challenge to break the trade-off between ion conductivity and ion selectivity, which can be resolved by the regulation of their nanostructures. Here, polyoxometalate (POM)-hybridized block copolymers (BCPs) are used as self-assembled additives to construct proton-selective nanobarriers in the ICM matrix to improve the microscopic structures and macroscopic properties of ICMs. Benefiting from the co-assembly behavior of BCPs and POMs and their cooperative noncovalent interactions with the polymer matrix, ∼50 nm ellipsoidal functional nanoassemblies with hydrophobic vanadium-shielding cores and hydrophilic proton-conducting shells are constructed in the sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) matrix, which leads to an overall enhancement of proton conductivity, proton selectivity, and cell performance. These results present a self-assembly route to construct functional nanostructures for the modification of polymer electrolyte membranes toward emerging energy technologies.

Encapsulation of H4SiW12O40 into an Amide-Functionalized MOF: A Highly Efficient Nanocomposite Catalyst for Oxidative Desulfurization of Diesel Fuel

Production of hydrocarbon fuels containing sulfur in ultralow levels is in high demand and requires the development of novel catalytic systems for oxidative desulfurization (ODS). Herein, a new nanocomposite SiW12@ZSTU-10 catalyst containing H4SiW12O40 (SiW12) encapsulated into a zinc(II) 3D metal-organic framework (MOF) (ZSTU-10) was assembled and characterized. The intricate structure and porosity of ZSTU-10 permit efficient encapsulation of the catalytically active SiW12 cages. The impact of different experimental parameters on the ODS of model oil containing dibenzothiophene as a typical S-based contaminant was evaluated. The SiW12@ZSTU-10 catalyst exhibits remarkable activity with up to 99.8% sulfur removal in 30 min. Kinetic features, trapping tests, and mechanistic studies were also performed. Furthermore, the catalyst offered an outstanding thermal and chemical stability, without apparent leaching and decline in the activity after six cycles. Such an improved catalytic efficiency of SiW12@ZSTU-10 can be assigned to (i) size-matched occupation of the ZSTU-10 pores by SiW12-active species, (ii) prevention of polyoxometalate (POM) leaching from the MOF matrix, (iii) facilitation of the access of S-based substrates to the active sites of SiW12, and (iv) excellent stability and recyclability of the obtained nanocomposite. The preset work widens a family of promising nanocomposite catalysts for improving the desulfurization performance of hybrid POM-MOF catalytic systems.

Polyoxometalates@Metal-Organic Frameworks Derived Bimetallic Co/Mo2 C Nanoparticles Embedded in Carbon Nanotube-Interwoven Hierarchically Porous Carbon Polyhedron Composite as a High-Efficiency Electrocatalyst for Al-S Batteries

Al-S battery (ASB) is a promising energy storage device, notable for its safety, crustal abundance, and high theoretical energy density. However, its development faces challenges due to slow reaction kinetics and poor reversibility. The creation of a multifunctional cathode material that can both adsorb polysulfides and accelerate their conversion is key to advancing ASB. Herein, a composite composed of polyoxometalate nanohybridization-derived Mo2 C and N-doped carbon nanotube-interwoven polyhedrons (Co/Mo2 C@NCNHP) is proposed for the first time as an electrochemical catalyst in the sulfur cathode. This composite improves the utilization and conductivity of sulfur within the cathode. DFT calculations and experimental results indicate that Co enables the chemisorption of polysulfides while Mo2 C catalyzes the reduction reaction of long-chain polysulfides. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in situ UV analysis reveal the different intermediates of Al polysulfide species in Co/Mo2 C@NCNHP during discharging/charging. As a cathode material for ASB, Co/Mo2 C@NCNHP@S composite can deliver a discharge-charge voltage hysteresis of 0.75 V with a specific capacity of 370 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 1A g-1 .

Directional Shunting of Photogenerated Carriers in POM@MOF for Promoting Nitrogen Adsorption and Oxidation

The efficient catalysis of nitrogen (N2 ) into high-value N-containing products plays a crucial role in the N economic cycle. However, weak N2 adsorption and invalid N2 activation remain two major bottlenecks in rate-determining steps, leading to low N2 fixation performance. Herein, an effective dual active sites photocatalyst of polyoxometalates (POMs)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highlighted via altering coordination microenvironment and inducing directional shunting of photogenerated carriers to facilitate N2 /catalyst interaction and enhance oxidation performance. MOFs create more open unsaturated metal cluster sites with unoccupied d orbital possessing Lewis acidity to accept electrons from the 3σg bonding orbital of N2 for storage by combining with POMs to replace bidentate linkers. POMs act as electron sponges donating electrons to MOFs, while the holes directional flow to POMs. The hole-rich POMs with strong oxidation capacity are easily involved in oxidizing adsorbed N2 . Taking UiO-66 (C48 H28 O32 Zr6 ) and Mo72 Fe30 ([Mo72 Fe30 O252 (CH3 COO)12 {Mo2 O7 (H2 O)}2 {H2 Mo2 O8 (H2 O)}(H2 O)91 ]·150H2 O) as an example, Mo72 Fe30 @UiO-66 shows twofold enhanced adsorption of N2 (250.5 cm3  g-1 ) than UiO-66 (122.9 cm3 g-1 ) at P/P0  = 1. And, the HNO3 yield of Mo72 Fe30 @UiO-66 is 702.4 µg g-1  h-1 , ≈7 times and 24 times higher than UiO-66 and Mo72 Fe30 . This work provides reliable value for the storage and relaying artificial N2 fixation.

Advances in Polyoxometalates as Electron Mediators for Photocatalytic Dye Degradation

The increasing concerns over the environment and the growing demand for sustainable water treatment technologies have sparked substantial interest in the field of photocatalytic dye removal. Polyoxometalates (POMs), known for their intricate metal-oxygen anion clusters, have received considerable attention due to their versatile structures, compositions, and efficient facilitation of photo-induced electron transfers. This paper provides an overview of the ongoing research progress in the realm of photocatalytic dye degradation utilizing POMs and their derivatives. The details encompass the compositions of catalysts, catalytic efficacy, and light absorption propensities, and the photocatalytic mechanisms inherent to POM-based materials for dye degradation are exhaustively expounded upon. This review not only contributes to a better understanding of the potential of POM-based materials in photocatalytic dye degradation, but also presents the advancements and future prospects in this domain of environmental remediation.

Polyoxometalate-Decorated Gold Nanoparticles Inhibit β-Amyloid Aggregation and Cross the Blood-Brain Barrier in a µphysiological Model

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by a combination of several neuropathological hallmarks, such as extracellular aggregates of beta amyloid (Aβ). Numerous alternatives have been studied for inhibiting Aβ aggregation but, at this time, there are no effective treatments available. Here, we developed the tri-component nanohybrid system AuNPs@POM@PEG based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) covered with polyoxometalates (POMs) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). In this work, AuNPs@POM@PEG demonstrated the inhibition of the formation of amyloid fibrils, showing a 75% decrease in Aβ aggregation in vitro. As it is a potential candidate for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, we evaluated the cytotoxicity of AuNPs@POM@PEG and its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). We achieved a stable nanosystem that is non-cytotoxic below 2.5 nM to human neurovascular cells. The brain permeability of AuNPs@POM@PEG was analyzed in an in vitro microphysiological model of the BBB (BBB-on-a-chip), containing 3D human neurovascular cell co-cultures and microfluidics. The results show that AuNPs@POM@PEG was able to cross the brain endothelial barrier in the chip and demonstrated that POM does not affect the barrier integrity, giving the green light to further studies into this system as a nanotherapeutic.

Indirect Electrocatalysis S─N/S─S Bond Construction by Robust Polyoxometalate Based Foams

Indirect electrocatalytic conversion of cheap organic raw materials via the activation of S─H and N─H bonds into the value-added S─N/S─S bonds chemicals for industrial rubber production is a promising strategy to realize the atomic economic reaction, during which the kinetic inhibition that is associated with the electron transfer at the electrode/electrolyte interface in traditional direct electrocatalysis can be eliminated to achieve higher performance. In this work, a series of di-copper-substituted phosphotungstatebased foams (PW10 Cu2 @CMC) are fabricated with tunable loadings (17 to 44 wt%), which can be successfully applied in indirect electrocatalytic syntheses of sulfenamides and disulfides. Specifically, the optimal PW10 Cu2 @CMC (44 wt%) exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for the construction of S─N/S─S bonds (yields up to 99%) coupling with the efficient production of H2 (≈50 µmol g-1  h-1 ). Remarkably, it enables the scale-up production (≈14.4 g in a batch experiment) and the obtained products can serve as rubber vulcanization accelerators with superior properties to traditional industrial rubber additives in real industrial processes. This powerful catalysis system that can simultaneously produce rubber vulcanization accelerator and H2 may inaugurate a new electrocatalytic avenue to explore polyoxometalate-based foam catalysts in electrocatalysis field.

A Forceful "Dendrite-Killer" of Polyoxomolybdate with Reusability Effectively Dominating Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Anode

In this work, a series of Mo-containing polyoxometalates (POMs) modified separators to inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites, and thus improving the lifespan and safety of the cells is proposed. When the deposited lithium forms dendrites and touches the separator, the optimized Dawson-type POM of (NH4 )6 [P2 Mo18 O62 ]·11H2 O (P2 Mo18 ) with the stronger oxidizability, acts like a "killer", is more inclined to oxidize Li0 into Li+ , thus weakening the lethality of lithium dendrites. The above process is accompanied by the formation of Lix [P2 Mo18 O62 ] (x = 6-10) in its reduced state. Converting to the stripping process, the reduced state Lix [P2 Mo18 O62 ] (x = 6-10) can be reoxidized to P2 Mo18 , which achieves the reusability of P2 Mo18 functional material. Meanwhile, lithium ions are released into the cell system to participate in the subsequent electrochemical cycles, thus the undesired lithium dendrites are converted into usable lithium ions to prevent the generation of "dead lithium". As a result, the Li//Li symmetrical cell with P2 Mo18 modified separator delivers exceptional cyclic stability for over 1000 h at 3 mA cm-2 and 5 mAh cm-2 , and the assembled Li-S full cell maintains superior reversible capacity of 600 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 2 C.

Binary Heterogroup-Templated Scaffolds of Polyoxopalladates as Precatalysts for Plasma-Assisted Ammonia Synthesis

In addition to improving the synthetic efficiency, the template method can do a lot more in the chemistry of polyoxopalladates (POPs), such as the establishment of novel metal-oxo scaffolds. In this endeavor, a binary system comprising heterogroups of nonmetallic {As/SiO4} and metallic {VO4/5} successfully fulfills the templated growth of two POPs with unprecedented seesaw- and spindle-like prototypes. Of these, self-aggregation of heterogroups beacons an effective route to break the highly symmetrical PdII-oxo matrix and to force the arrangement of addenda in a nonconventional manner. Aside from the interest in their structural features, the as-made POPs are available for immobilization on the mesoporous SBA-15 as precatalysts for ammonia synthesis. The outer cover of heterogroups in the POP precursors contributes to the ultrafine size and uniform distribution of derived Pd0 nanoparticles (PdNPs). With the help of plasma activation on H2 and N2, such PdNPs-SBA15 catalysts significantly improve the production performance of NH3, showcasing the maximum synthesis rate of 64.42 μmol/(min·gcat) with the corresponding energy yield as high as 4.38 g-NH3/kWh.

Polyoxometalate-Modified Amphiphilic Polystyrene-block-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) Membranes for Heterogeneous Glucose to Formic Acid Methyl Ester Oxidation

Herein, we present a new heterogeneous catalyst active toward glucose to formic acid methyl ester oxidation. The catalyst was fabricated via electrostatic immobilization of the inorganic polyoxometalate HPA-5 catalyst H8[PMo7V5O40] onto the pore surface of amphiphilic block copolymer membranes prepared via non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS). The catalyst immobilization was achieved via wet impregnation due to strong coulombic interactions between protonated tertiary amino groups of the polar poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) block and the anionic catalyst. Overall, three sets of five consecutive catalytic cycles were performed in an autoclave under 90 °С and 11.5 bar air pressure in methanol, and the corresponding yields of formic acid methyl ester were quantified via head-space gas chromatography. The obtained results demonstrate that the membrane maintains its catalytic activity over multiple cycles, resulting in high to moderate yields in comparison to a homogeneous catalytic system. Nevertheless, presumably due to leaching, the catalytic activity declines over five catalytic cycles. The morphological and chemical changes of the membrane during the prolonged catalysis under harsh conditions were examined in detail using different analytic tools, and it seems that the underlying block copolymer is not affected by the catalytic process.

Semi-Solid Supramolecular Ionic Network Electrolytes Formed by Zwitterionic Liquids and Polyoxometalate Nanoclusters for High Proton Conduction

Flexible electrolytes with solid self-supporting properties are highly desired in the fields of energy and electronics. However, traditional flexible electrolytes prepared by doping ionic liquids or salt solutions into a polymer matrix pose a risk of liquid component leakage during device operation. In this work, the development of supramolecular ionic network electrolytes using polyoxometalate nanoclusters as supramolecular crosslinkers to solidify bola-type zwitterionic liquids is reported. The resulting self-supporting electrolytes possess semi-solid features and show a high proton conductivity of 8.2 × 10-4 S cm-1 at low humidity (RH = 30%). Additionally, the electrolytes exhibit a typical plateau region in rheological tests, indicating that their dynamic network structures can contribute mechanical behavior similar to the entangled networks in covalent polymer materials. This work introduces a new paradigm for designing flexible solid electrolytes and expands the concept of reticular chemistry to noncrystalline systems.

A Novel Anderson-Type POMs-Based Hybrids Flame Retardant for Reducing Smoke Release and Toxicity of Epoxy Resins

Smoke emission and smoke toxicity have drawn more attention to improving the fire safety of polymers. In this work, a polyoxometalates (POMs)-based hybrids flame retardant (P-AlMo6 ) epoxy resin (EP) is prepared with toxicity-reduction and smoke-suppression properties via a peptide coupling reaction between POMs and organic molecules with double DOPO (bisDOPA). It combines the good compatibility of the organic molecule and the superior catalytic performance of POMs. Compared to pure EP, the glass transition temperature and flexural modulus of EP composite with 5 wt.% P-AlMo6 (EP/P-AlMo6 -5) are raised by 12.3 °C and 57.75%, respectively. Notably, at low flame-retardant addition, the average CO to CO2 ratio (Av-COY/Av-CO2 Y) is reduced by 33.75%. Total heat release (THR) and total smoke production (TSP) are lowered by 44.4% and 53.7%, respectively. The Limited Oxygen Index (LOI) value achieved 31.7% and obtained UL-94 V-0 rating. SEM, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and TG-FTIR are applied to analyze the flame-retardant mechanism in condensed and gas phase. Outstanding flame retardant, low smoke toxicity properties are attained due to the catalytic carbonization ability of metal oxides Al2 O3 and MoO3 produced from the breakdown of POMs. This work advances the development of POMs-based hybrids flame retardants with low smoke toxicity properties.

H8 [PV5 Mo7 O40 ] - A Unique Polyoxometalate for Acid and RedOx Catalysis: Synthesis, Characterization, and Modern Applications in Green Chemical Processes

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are a fascinating group of anionic metal-oxide clusters with a broad variety of structural properties and several catalytic applications, especially in the conversion of bio-derived platform chemicals. H8 [PV5 Mo7 O40 ] (HPA-5) is a unique POM catalyst that ideally links numerous fascinating research fields for the following reasons: a) HPA-5 can be synthesized by rational design approaches; b) HPA-5 can be well characterized using multiple analytical tools explaining its catalytic properties; and c) HPA-5 is suitable for multiple important catalytic transformations of bio-based feedstock. This Review combines the fields of synthesis, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and crystallographic characterization of HPA-5 with those of sustainable catalysis and green chemistry. Selected catalytic applications include esterification, dehydration, and delignification of biomass as well as selective oxidation and fractionation of bio-based feedstock. The unique HPA-5 is a fascinating POM that has a broad application scope for biomass valorization.

Capture and Stabilization of the Hydroxyl Radical in a Uranyl Peroxide Cluster

Here we describe the synthesis and characterization of a new uranyl peroxide cluster (UPC), U60 Ox30 *, which captures and stabilizes oxygen-based free radicals for more than one week. These radical species were first detected with a nitroblue tetrazolium colorimetric assay and U60 Ox30 * was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction as well as infrared (IR), Raman, UV-Vis-NIR, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. Identification of the free radicals present in U60 Ox30 * was done via room temperature solid and solution state X-band EPR studies using spin trapping methods. The spin trapping agent 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) was definitive for identifying the free radicals in U60 Ox30 *, which are hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH) that are stable for up to ten days that also persist upon addition of the metalloenzymes catalase and superoxide dismutase. Addition of the spin trapping agent α-(4-pyridyl N-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (POBN) further confirmed the radicals were oxygen based, and deuteration experiments showed that the origin of the free radicals was from the decomposition of H2 O2 in water. These results demonstrate that highly oxidizing species such as the ⋅OH radical can be stabilized in UPCs, which alters our understanding of the role of free radicals present in spent nuclear fuel.

Polyoxometalate K6[P2Mo18O62] Inactivates Escherichia coli O157:H7 by Inducing recA Expression and Apoptosis-like Bacterial Death

Polyoxometalates have emerged as promising bactericidal agents. In the current study, the bactericidal activity of polyoxometalate K₆[P₂Mo₁₈O₆₂] against Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 and its possible underlying mechanisms were explored. The obtained results demonstrated that K₆[P₂Mo₁₈O₆₂] could effectively kill E. coli O157:H7 at millimolar levels. Moreover, K₆[P₂Mo₁₈O₆₂] treatment also induced significant increases in recA protein expression and further triggered characteristic apoptosis-like bacterial death events such as DNA fragmentation and phosphatidylserine exposure. In conclusion, polyoxometalate K₆[P₂Mo₁₈O₆₂] possesses a desirable antibacterial activity, and induction of bacterial apoptosis-like death might be involved in its underlying bactericidal mechanisms.

Vanadium-Substituted Polyoxometalates Regulate Prion Protein Fragment 106-126 Misfolding by an Oxidation Strategy

Prion disorders are a group of lethal infectious neurodegenerative diseases caused by the spontaneous aggregation of misfolded prion proteins (PrP^Sc). The oxidation of such proteins by chemical reagents can significantly modulate their aggregation behavior. Herein, we exploit a series of vanadium-substituted Keggin-type tungsten and molybdenum POMs (W- and Mo-POMs) as chemical tools to oxidize PrP106-126 (denoted as PrP), an ideal model for studying PrP^Sc. Due to the band gaps being larger than that of Mo-POMs, W-POMs possess higher structural stability and show stronger binding and oxidation effect on PrP. Additionally, the substitution of W/Mo by vanadium elevates the local electron distribution on the bridged O(26) atom, thereby strengthening the hydrogen bonding of POMs with the histidine site. Most importantly, with the number of substituted vanadium increases, the LUMO energy level of POMs decreases, making it easier to accept electrons from methionine. As a result, PW₁₀V₂ displays the strongest oxidation on the methionine residue of PrP, leading to an excellent inhibitory effect on PrP aggregation and a significant attenuation on its neurotoxicity.

Photoelectrochemical biosensor based on SiW12@CdS quantum dots for the highly sensitive detection of HPV 16 DNA

A highly sensitive biosensor for detecting HPV 16 DNA was prepared based on Keggin-type polyoxometalate (SiW₁₂)-grafted CdS quantum dots (SiW₁₂@CdS QDs) and colloidal gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), which exhibited remarkable selectivity and sensitivity upon target DNA detection because of its excellent photoelectrochemical (PEC) response. Here, an enhanced photoelectronic response ability was achieved with the strong association of SiW₁₂@CdS QDs by polyoxometalate modification, which was developed through a convenient hydrothermal process. Furthermore, on Au NP-modified indium tin oxide slides, a multiple-site tripodal DNA walker sensing platform coupled with T7 exonuclease was successfully fabricated with SiW₁₂@CdS QDs/NP DNA as a probe for detecting HPV 16 DNA. Due to the remarkable conductivity of Au NPs, the photosensitivity of the as-prepared biosensor was improved in an I3-/I- solution and avoided the use of other regents toxic to living organisms. Finally, under optimized conditions, the as-prepared biosensor protocol demonstrated wide linear ranges (15-130 nM), with a limit of detection of 0.8 nM and high selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. Moreover, the proposed PEC biosensor platform offers a reliable pathway for detecting other biological molecules with nano-functional materials.

Two New Compounds Based on Bi-Capped Keggin Polyoxoanions and Cu-Bpy Cations Contain Both CuII and CuI Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization and Properties

Two inorganic-organic hybrid complexes based on bi-capped Keggin-type cluster, {([Cu^II(2,2'-bpy)₂]₂[PMo^VI₈V^V₂V^IV₂O₄₀(V^IVO)₂])[Cu^I(2,2'-bpy)]}∙2H₂O (1) and {[Cu^II(2,2'-bpy)₂]₂[SiMo^VI_8.5Mo^V_2.5V^IVO₄₀(V^IVO)₂]}[Cu^I_0.5(2,2'-bpy)(H₂O)_0.5] (2) (bpy = bipyridine), had been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, TGA, PXRD and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. Compound 1 consists of a novel 1-D chain structure constructed from [Cu^I(2,2'-bpy)]⁺ unit linking bi-supported POMs anion {[Cu^II(2,2'-bpy)₂]₂[PMo^VI₈V^V₂V^IV₂O₄₀(V^IVO)₂]}^-. Compound 2 is a bi-capped Keggin cluster bi-supported Cu-bpy complex. The main highlights of the two compounds are that Cu-bpy cations contain both Cu^I and Cu^II complexes. Furthermore, the fluorescence properties, the catalytic properties, and the photocatalytic performance of compounds 1 and 2 have been assessed, and the results show that both compounds are active for styrene epoxidation and degradation and adsorption of Methylene blue (MB), Rhodamine B (RhB) and mixed aqueous solutions.

Size-Controlled Synthesis of Luminescent Few-Atom Silver Clusters via Electron Transfer in Isostructural Redox-Active Porous Ionic Crystals

Ag clusters with a controlled number of atoms have received significant interest because they show size-dependent catalytic, optical, electronic, or magnetic properties. However, the synthesis of size-controlled, ligand-free, and air-stable Ag clusters with high yields has not been well-established. Herein, it is shown that isostructural porous ionic crystals (PICs) with redox-active polyoxometalates (POMs) can be used to synthesize Ag clusters via electron transfer from POMs to Ag⁺ . Ag clusters with average numbers of three, four, or six atoms emitting blue, green, or red colors, respectively, are formed and stabilized in the PICs under ambient conditions without any protecting ligands. The cluster size solely correlates with the degree of electron transfer, which is controlled by the reduction time and types of ions or elements of the PICs. Thus, advantages have been taken of POMs as electron sources and PICs as scaffolds to demonstrate a convenient method to obtain few-atom Ag clusters.

Recent Advances in Confining Polyoxometalates and the Applications

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are widely used in catalysis, energy storage, biomedicine, and other research fields due to their unique acidity, photothermal, and redox features. However, the leaching and agglomeration problems of POMs greatly limit their practical applications. Confining POMs in a host material is an efficient tool to address the above-mentioned issues. POM@host materials have received extensive attention in recent years. They not only inherent characteristics of POMs and host, but also play a significant synergistic effect from each component. This review focuses on the recent advances in the development and applications of POM@host materials. Different types of host materials are elaborated in detail, including tubular, layered, and porous materials. Variations in the structures and properties of POMs and hosts before and after confinement are highlighted as well. In addition, an overview of applications for the representative POM@host materials in electrochemical, catalytic, and biological fields is provided. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of POM@host composites are discussed.

Efficient Conversion of Biomass to Formic Acid Coupled with Low Energy Consumption Hydrogen Production from Water Electrolysis

The development of a new electrolytic water hydrogen production coupling system is the key to realize efficient and low-cost hydrogen production and promote its practical application. Herein, a green and efficient electrocatalytic biomass to formic acid (FA) coupled hydrogen production system has been developed. In such system, carbohydrates such as glucose are oxidized to FA using polyoxometalates (POMs) as the redox anolyte, while H2 is evolved continuously at the cathode. Among them, the yield of glucose to FA is as high as 62.5%, and FA is the only liquid-product. Furthermore, the system requires only 1.22 V to drive a current density of 50 mA·cm-2, and the Faraday efficiency of hydrogen production is close to 100%. Its electrical consumption is only 2.9 kWh·Nm-3(H2), which is only 69% of that of traditional electrolytic water. This work opens up a promising direction for the low-cost hydrogen production coupled with efficient biomass conversion.

Recent Advances in Application of Polyoxometalates in Lignocellulose Pretreatment and Transformation

Lignocellulose, composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, holds immense promise as a renewable resource for the production of sustainable chemicals and fuels. Unlocking the full potential of lignocellulose requires efficient pretreatment strategies. In this comprehensive review, efforts were taken to survey the latest developments in polyoxometalates (POMs)-assisted pretreatment and conversion of lignocellulosic biomass. An outstanding finding highlighted in this review is that the deformation of the cellulose structure from I to II accompanied by the removal of xylan/lignin through the synergistic effect of ionic liquids (ILs) and POMs resulted in a significant increase in glucose yield and improved cellulose digestibility. Furthermore, successful integration of POMs with deep eutectic solvents (DES) or γ-valerolactone/water (GVL/water) systems has demonstrated efficient lignin removal, opening avenues for advanced biomass utilization. This review not only presents the key findings and novel approaches in POMs-based pretreatment but also addresses the current challenges and prospects for large-scale industrial implementation. By offering a comprehensive assessment of the progress in this field, this review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and industry professionals aiming to harness the potential of lignocellulosic biomass for sustainable chemical and fuel production.

Exploring the Reactivity of Polyoxometalates toward Proteins: From Interactions to Mechanistic Insights

The latest advances in the study of the reactivity of metal-oxo clusters toward proteins showcase how fundamental insights obtained so far open new opportunities in biotechnology and medicine. In this Perspective, these studies are discussed through the lens of the reactivity of a family of soluble anionic metal-oxo nanoclusters known as polyoxometalates (POMs). POMs act as catalysts in a wide range of reactions with several different types of biomolecules and have promising therapeutic applications due to their antiviral, antibacterial, and antitumor activities. However, the lack of a detailed understanding of the mechanisms behind biochemically relevant reactions-particularly with complex biological systems such as proteins-still hinders further developments. Hence, in this Perspective, special attention is given to reactions of POMs with peptides and proteins showcasing a molecular-level understanding of the reaction mechanism. In doing so, we aim to highlight both existing limitations and promising directions of future research on the reactivity of metal-oxo clusters toward proteins and beyond.

Effective Combination of the Metal Centers in MOF-Based Materials toward Sustainable Oxidation Catalysts

A successful encapsulation of Keggin-type polyoxomolybdate (H₃[PMo₁₂O₄₀], PMo₁₂) into metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with an identical framework but distinct metal centers (ZIF-8 with Zn²⁺ and ZIF-67 with Co²⁺) was accomplished by a straightforward room-temperature procedure. The presence of Zn²⁺ in the composite material PMo₁₂@ZIF-8 instead of Co²⁺ in PMo₁₂@ZIF-67 caused a remarkable increase in the catalytic activity that achieved a total oxidative desulfurization of a multicomponent model diesel under moderate and friendly conditions (oxidant: H₂O₂ and solvent: ionic liquid, IL). Interestingly, the parent ZIF-8-based composite with the Keggin-type polyoxotungstate (H₃[PW₁₂O₄₀], PW₁₂), PW₁₂@ZIF-8, did not show the relevant catalytic activity. The ZIF-type supports present an appropriate framework to accommodate active polyoxometalates (POMs) into their cavities without leaching, but the nature of the metallic center from the POM and the metal present in the ZIF framework were vital for the catalytic performance of the composite materials.

Self-Activation of Inorganic-Organic Hybrids Derived through Continuous Synthesis of Polyoxomolybdate and para-Phenylenediamine Enables Very High Lithium-Ion Storage Capacity

Inorganic-organic hybrid materials with redox-active components were prepared by an aqueous precipitation reaction of ammonium heptamolybdate (AHM) with para-phenylenediamine (PPD). A scalable and low-energy continuous wet chemical synthesis process, known as the microjet process, was used to prepare particles with large surface area in the submicrometer range with high purity and reproducibility on a large scale. Two different crystalline hybrid products were formed depending on the ratio of molybdate to organic ligand and pH. A ratio of para-phenylenediamine to ammonium heptamolybdate from 1 : 1 to 5 : 1 resulted in the compound [C₆ H₁₀ N₂ ]₂ [Mo₈ O₂₆ ] ⋅ 6 H₂ O, while higher PPD ratios from 9 : 1 to 30 : 1 yielded a composition of [C₆ H₉ N₂ ]₄ [NH₄ ]₂ [Mo₇ O₂₄ ] ⋅ 3 H₂ O. The electrochemical behavior of the two products was tested in a battery cell environment. Only the second of the two hybrid materials showed an exceptionally high capacity of 1084 mAh g^-1 at 100 mA g^-1 after 150 cycles. The maximum capacity was reached after an induction phase, which can be explained by a combination of a conversion reaction with lithium to Li₂ MoO₄ and an additional in situ polymerization of PPD. The final hybrid material is a promising material for lithium-ion battery (LIB) applications.

Investigation of the Formation, Characterization, and Oxidative Catalytic Valorization of Humins

The industrial use of biomass, e.g., for the production of platform chemicals such as levulinic acid, became increasingly important in recent years. However, the efficiency of these processes was reduced by the formation of insoluble solid waste products called humins. Herein, the formation of humins from various carbohydrates was investigated under different process conditions, in order to obtain information about the structure and the formation mechanism. During this process, new potential structural fragments of humins were identified. Subsequently, the produced humins were oxidatively converted to low-molecular-weight carboxylic acids with the use of polyoxometalate catalysts. The experiments showed that the use of sugars in acetic acid and ethanol only lead to the formation of a small amount of humins, which were also structurally most suitable for conversion to carboxylic acids. The main products of the oxidative valorisation of these humins were acetic acid, formic acid, and CO₂, respectively, and our results indicate that certain functional groups were converted preferentially. These findings will help to improve processes for the valorisation of biomass by enabling an overall more efficient use of thermo-sensitive feedstock such as carbohydrates.

Polymerization-Induced Aggregation Approach toward Uniform Pd Nanoparticle-Decorated Mesoporous SiO2/WO3 Microspheres for Hydrogen Sensing

Hydrogen as an important clean energy source with a high energy density has attracted extensive attention in fuel cell vehicles and industrial production. However, considering its flammable and explosive property, gas sensors are desperately desired to efficiently monitor H₂ concentration in practical applications. Herein, a facile polymerization-induced aggregation strategy was proposed to synthesize uniform Si-doped mesoporous WO₃ (Si-mWO₃) microspheres with tunable sizes. The polymerization of the melamine-formaldehyde resin prepolymer (MF prepolymer) in the presence of silicotungstic acid hydrate (abbreviated as H₄SiW) leads to uniform MF/H₄SiW hybrid microspheres, which can be converted into Si-mWO₃ microspheres through a simple thermal decomposition treatment process. In addition, benefiting from the pore confinement effect, monodispersed Pd-decorated Si-mWO₃ microspheres (Pd/Si-mWO₃) were subsequently synthesized and applied as sensitive materials for the sensing and detection of hydrogen. Owing to the oxygen spillover effect of Pd nanoparticles, Pd/Si-mWO₃ enables adsorption of more oxygen anions than pure mWO₃. These Pd nanoparticles dispersed on the surface of Si-mWO₃ accelerated the dissociation of hydrogen and promoted charge transfer between Pd nanoparticles and WO₃ crystal particles, which enhanced the sensing sensitivity toward H₂. As a result, the gas sensor based on Pd/Si-mWO₃ microspheres exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity (R_air/R_gas = 33.5) to 50 ppm H₂ at a relatively low operating temperature (210 °C), which was 30 times higher than that of the pure Si-mWO₃ sensor. To develop intelligent sensors, a portable sensor module based on Pd/Si-mWO₃ in combination with wireless Bluetooth connection was designed, which achieved real-time monitoring of H₂ concentration, opening up the possibility for use as intelligent H₂ sensors.

Polyoxometalates Impact as Anticancer Agents

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are oxoanions of transition metal ions, such as V, Mo, W, Nb, and Pd, forming a variety of structures with a wide range of applications. Herein, we analyzed recent studies on the effects of polyoxometalates as anticancer agents, particularly their effects on the cell cycle. To this end, a literature search was carried out between March and June 2022, using the keywords "polyoxometalates" and "cell cycle". The effects of POMs on selected cell lines can be diverse, such as their effects in the cell cycle, protein expression, mitochondrial effects, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, cell death and cell viability. The present study focused on cell viability and cell cycle arrest. Cell viability was analyzed by dividing the POMs into sections according to the constituent compound, namely polyoxovanadates (POVs), polyoxomolybdates (POMos), polyoxopaladates (POPds) and polyoxotungstates (POTs). When comparing and sorting the IC₅₀ values in ascending order, we obtained first POVs, then POTs, POPds and, finally, POMos. When comparing clinically approved drugs and POMs, better results of POMs in relation to drugs were observed in many cases, since the dose required to have an inhibitory concentration of 50% is 2 to 200 times less, depending on the POMs, highlighting that these compounds could become in the future an alternative to existing drugs in cancer therapy.

POM@ZIF Derived Mixed Metal Oxide Catalysts for Sustained Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

The design of efficient and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts based on noble-metal-free materials is crucial for energy conversion and storage. In this work, it was demonstrated how polyoxometalate (POM)-doped ZIF-67 can be converted into a stable oxygen evolution electrocatalyst by chemical etching, cation exchange, and thermal annealing steps. Characterization by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy indicate that POM-doped ZIF-67 derived carbon-supported metal oxides were synthesized. The resulting composite shows structural and compositional advantages which lead to low overpotential (306 mV at j=10 mA ⋅ cm^-2 ) and long-term stability under harsh OER conditions (1.0 M aqueous KOH).

Structurally-New Hexadecanuclear Ni-Containing Silicotungstate with Catalytic Hydrogen Generation Activity

A structurally-new, carbon-free hexadecanuclear Ni-containing silicotungstate, [Ni₁₆(H₂O)₁₅(OH)₉(PO₄)₄(SiW₉O₃₄)₃]^19-, has been facilely synthesized using a one-pot, solution-based synthetic method systematically characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and several other techniques. The resulting complex works as a noble-metal-free catalyst for visible-light-driven catalytic generation of hydrogen, by coupling with a [Ir(coumarin)₂(dtbbpy)][PF₆] photosensitizer and a triethanolamine (TEOA) sacrificial electron donor. Under minimally optimized conditions, a turnover number (TON) of 842 was achieved for TBA-Ni₁₆P₄(SiW₉)₃-catalyzed hydrogen evolution system. The structural stability of TBA-Ni₁₆P₄(SiW₉)₃ catalyst under photocatalytic conditions was evaluated by the mercury-poisoning test, FT-IR, and DLS measurements. The photocatalytic mechanism was elucidated by both time-solved luminescence decay and static emission quenching measurements.

Layer-by-Layer Construction of a Nanoarchitecture by Polyoxometalates and Polymers: Enhanced Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

In this contribution, a nanoarchitectural approach was employed to produce a nanolayer of polyoxometalate (POM) on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to achieve a higher surface area with higher electrocatalytic activity toward the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To accomplish this, the well-known layer-by-layer (LbL) technique was employed, which involved the alternate adsorption of the POM, Na_0.3[N(C₄H₉)₄]_7.7 [(Mo₃O₈)₄(O₃PC(O)(C₃H₆NH₂CH₂C₄H₃S)PO₃)₄], abbreviated as [(TBA)Mo₁₂(AleThio)₄], and polyethyleneimine (PEI) polymer. This nanolayered electrode exhibited catalytic properties toward the HER in 0.5 M H₂SO₄ with the resulting polarization curves indicating an increase in the HER activity with the increasing number of POM layers, and the overpotential required for this reaction was lowered by 0.83 V when compared with a bare GCE. The eighth PEI/[(TBA)Mo₁₂(AleThio)₄] bilayer exhibited a significantly lower HER overpotential of -0.077 V at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2. Surface characterization of the LbL-assembled nanolayers was carried out using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. We believe that the synergetic effect of the positively charged PEI polymer and the catalytically active molybdate POM is the cause for the successful response to the electrochemical HER.
