Excessive linoleic acid induces muscle oxidative stress through 5-lipoxygenase-dependent peroxidation

Oxidative stress in muscles is closely related to the occurrence of insulin resistance, muscle weakness and atrophy, age-related sarcopenia, and cancer. Aldehydes, a primary oxidation intermediate of polyunsaturated fatty acids, have been proven to be an important trigger for oxidative stress. However, the potential role of linoleic acid (LA) as a donor for volatile aldehydes to trigger oxidative stress has not been reported. Here, we reported that excessive dietary LA caused muscle redox imbalance and volatile aldehydes containing hexanal, 2-hexenal, and nonanal were the main metabolites leading to oxidative stress. Importantly, we identified 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) as a key enzyme mediating LA peroxidation in crustaceans for the first time. The inhibition of 5-LOX significantly suppressed the content of aldehydes produced by excessive LA. Mechanistically, the activation of the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-protein kinase A (PKA) pathway facilitated the translocation of 5-LOX from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, where 5-LOX oxidized LA, leading to oxidative stress through the generation of aldehydes. This study suggests that 5-LOX is a potential target to prevent the production of harmful aldehydes.

Prophylactic Cranial Irradiation in Limited-Stage Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Meta-Analysis

The role of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) in limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC) has been questioned in the era of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The purpose of this study was to re-evaluate the efficacy of PCI in patients with LS-SCLC. Three electronic databases were searched, including PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library from January 2012 to April 2022. All relevant publications were included based on the inclusion criteria, and survival data and brain metastasis (BM) rates were extracted and pooled. Ten studies were selected which involved 532 patients who received PCI and 613 patients who did not receive PCI. In pooled estimates, PCI significantly improved overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.71, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.61-0.82, p <0.001; HR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.48-0.97, p = 0.03, respectively]. Additionally, the use of PCI was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of brain metastasis (BM, risk ratio = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.46-0.90, p = 0.009). In subgroup analyses. The authors found that the PCI effects on OS were independent of region and the use of brain imaging after initial treatment. These findings demonstrate that PCI improves OS and PFS while decreasing the risk of BM in patients with LS-SCLC, implying that PCI remains necessary even in the MRI era. Two-Point Localization Algorithm of a Magnetic Target Based on Tensor Geometric Invariant

Currently, magnetic gradient tensor-based localization methods face challenges such as significant errors in geomagnetic field estimation, susceptibility to local optima in optimization algorithms, and inefficient performance. In addressing these issues, this article propose a two-point localization method under the constraint of overlaying geometric invariants. This method initially establishes the relationship between the target position and the magnetic gradient tensor by substituting an intermediate variable for the magnetic moment. Exploiting the property of the eigenvector corresponding to the minimum absolute eigenvalue being perpendicular to the target position vector, this constraint is superimposed to formulate a nonlinear system of equations of the target's position. In the process of determining the target position, the Nara method is employed for obtaining the initial values, followed by the utilization of the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm to derive a precise solution. Experimental validation through both simulations and experiments confirms the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results demonstrate its capability to overcome the challenges faced by a single-point localization method in the presence of some errors in geomagnetic field estimation. In comparison to traditional two-point localization methods, the proposed method exhibits the highest precision. The localization outcomes under different noise conditions underscore the robust noise resistance and resilience of the proposed method.

Characteristics of patients with initial diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus in emergency department and their outcomes: a retrospective single-center study

STUDY OBJECTIVE

This study aims to investigate the characteristics of patients with an initial diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in an emergency department (ED) and their outcomes.

METHODS

A total of 147 SLE patients (119 females and 28 males, mean age 26 ± 19 years) who visited the ED of the Peking University People's Hospital between January 2017 and June 2022 were enrolled in the study. Data on demographic information, clinical characteristics, comorbidities, therapy, and outcomes were collected.

RESULTS

Most patients visit ED because of symptoms related to SLE (74.8%, 110/147). The remaining 37 patients (25.2%) visited ED due to infection (43.2%, 16/37), gastrointestinal bleeding (10.8%, 4/37), coronary heart or cerebrovascular disease (18.9%, 7/37), macrophage activation syndrome or thrombotic microangiopathy (18.9%, 7/37), leukemia (5.4%, 2/37), and hepatic encephalopathy (2.7%, 1/37). Of the patients, 54.4% (80/147) were first diagnosed with SLE at the time of their ED visit. Thrombocytopenia events occurred significantly more frequently in this group of patients (OR 3.664, 95% CI 1.586-8.464, p = 0.002). Pulse steroid therapy was administered to 32.5% (26/80) of the patients with an initial diagnosis of SLE, and 26.3% (21/80) of these patients also received IVIG therapy during their ED visit. SLEDAI scores were significantly decreased after 6 months of therapy. The rate of mortality was 6.8% (10/147) in the 6-month follow-up period, and all the ten deaths happened in patients with disease-established SLE. The main causes of death were infections (two patients) and SLE flare (four patients).

CONCLUSION

Understanding disease patterns can contribute to physicians providing accurate diagnosis and efficient care for SLE patients in ED. Key Points • Systemic lupus erythematosus, a complex autoimmune disorder, can have either a chronic or a relapsing and remitting disease course. The disease can involve acute events or severe comorbidities, and frequent visits to the emergency department (ED) are inevitable. • It is essential to better understand which comorbidities can lead to emergency department visits. Accurate clinical diagnosis and appropriate interventions from ED physicians can have a strong impact on the prognosis of the disease. • Hematologic compromise attributed to SLE flare is the most common reason for ED visits. Owing to aggressive treatments, the clinical outcomes in patients with initial diagnosis of SLE have improved notably. • Our study highlights that early recognition and appropriate management of SLE-related conditions and other comorbidity in ED are crucial.

A Periosteum-Bioinspired Electrospun Janus Membrane with Antibacterial and Osteogenic Dual Function

For a guided bone regeneration membrane, it is critical to possess osteogenic capability while inhibiting infection caused by bacteria. Inspired by the bilayer structure of the native periosteum, an electrospun Janus membrane with osteogenic and antibacterial dual-function is fabricated for guided bone regeneration. Hydrophilic moxifloxacin (MXF) and hydrophobic icariin (ICA) are loaded in the nanofibers made of a mixture of polycaprolactone and gelatin at the top and bottom layers, respectively, leading to the opposing hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of the bilayer Janus membranes. The as-obtained Janus membrane exhibits excellent physical properties (tensile strength > 6.0 MPa) and robust biocompatibility, indicating the immense potential as a suitable replacement for the native periosteum. The membrane has a superior surface morphology and outstanding degradation performance in vitro. Besides, the rapid release of MXF and the slow release of ICA can meet the different needs of drug release rates. Only ≈30% ICA is released from the as-obtained Janus membrane after 21 d while almost 80% MXF is released. Mimicking the bilayer structure of the native periosteum, the electrospun Janus membrane containing ICA and MXF exhibits excellent comprehensive properties, which provides a promising strategy for preparing multifunctional scaffolds for tissue engineering.

Safety and efficacy of adding postbiotics in infant formula: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Postbiotics, as emerging products, were added to infant formula, but their safety and efficacy are unclear. To clarify this issue, we wrote this meta-analysis. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and ProQuest from its establishment to February 2023. The review was registered on PROSPERO database (CRD42022352405). The effects of infant formula with and without postbiotics were compared, and the incidence of serious adverse events (SAEs), digestive symptoms, concentration of stool secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA), and growth and development indexes were analyzed. Nine randomized controlled trials with 2065 participants were included. The addition of postbiotics to infant formula was found to increase the concentration of stool SIgA (P < 0.05) with very low certainty of evidence, without significantly impacting the incidence of SAEs, infantile colic, flatulence, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and gastrointestinal disorders, the daily weight gain, the total gain in body length and the daily head circumference gain (all P > 0.05). Adding postbiotics to the formula is safe for infants, which would not increase the incidence of SAEs, infantile colic, flatulence, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and gastrointestinal disorders, and could increase the concentration of stool SIgA. IMPACT: Our study provides evidence that the addition of postbiotics to infant formula is safe but not effective. This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis of postbiotics. This study provides strong evidence for the safety of postbiotics and lays a foundation for related clinical trials.

SKIL/SnoN attenuates TGF-β1/SMAD signaling-dependent collagen synthesis in hepatic fibrosis

The ski-related novel gene (SnoN), encoded by the SKIL gene, has been shown to negatively regulated transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) signaling pathway. However, the roles of SnoN in hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation and hepatic fibrosis (HF) are still unclear. To evaluate the role of SnoN in HF, we combined bulk RNA sequencing analysis and single-cell RNA sequencing analysis to analyse patients with HF. The role of SKIL/SnoN was verified using liver samples from rat model transfected HSC-T6 and LX-2 cell lines. Immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, PCR, and western blotting techniques were used to demonstrate the expression of SnoN and its regulatory effects on TGF-β1 signaling in fibrotic liver tissues and cells. Furthermore, we constructed competitive endogenous RNA regulatory network and potential drug network associated with the SnoN gene. We identified SKIL gene as a differentially expressed gene in hepatic fibrosis. SnoN protein was found to be widely expressed in the cytoplasm of normal hepatic tissues, whereas it was almost absent in HF tissues. In the rat group subjected to bile duct ligation (BDL), SnoN protein expression decreased, while TGF-β1, collagen III, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1), and fibronectin levels increased. We observed the interaction of SnoN with p-SMAD2 and p-SMAD3 in the cytoplasm. Following SnoN overexpression, apoptosis of HSCs was promoted, and the expression of HF-associated proteins, including collagen I, collagen III, and TIMP-1, was reduced. Conversely, downregulation of SnoN inhibited HSC apoptosis, increased collagen III and TIMP-1 levels, and decreased matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP-13) expression. In conclusion, SnoN expression is downregulated in fibrotic livers, and could attenuate TGF-β1/SMADs signaling-dependent de-repression of collagen synthesis.

Association between the gut microbiota and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study

BACKGROUND

Increasing studies have shown that there is a significant association between gut microbiota and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

AIMS

To show the potential association between gut microbiota and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, we performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis.

METHODS

We analyzed summary statistics from genome-wide association studies of gut microbiota and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and conducted Mendelian randomization studies to evaluate relationships between these factors.

RESULTS

Of the 211 gut microbiota taxa examined, the inverse variance weighted method identified Lactobacillaceae (OR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.72 - 0.95, P = 0.007), Christensenellaceae (OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.59 - 0.92, P = 0.007), and Intestinibacter (OR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.73 - 0.99, P = 0.035) were negatively correlated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. And Coriobacteriia (OR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.01 - 1.42, P = 0.038), Actinomycetales (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.02 - 1.53, P = 0.031), Oxalobacteraceae (OR = 1.10, 95% CI = 1.01 - 1.21, P = 0.036), Ruminococcaceae_UCG005 (OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.01 - 1.38, P = 0.033) are positively associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study found that the abundance of certain strains was associated with the progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Induction Motor Stator Winding Inter-Tern Short Circuit Fault Detection Based on Start-Up Current Envelope Energy

Inter-turn short circuit (ITSC) is a common fault in induction motors. However, it is challenging to detect the early stage of ITSC fault. To address this issue, this paper proposes an ITSC fault detection method for three-phase induction motors based on start-up current envelope energy. This approach uses Akima interpolation to calculate the envelope of the measured start-up current of the induction motor. A Gaussian window weighting is applied to eliminate endpoint effects caused by the initial phase angle, and the enveloping energy is obtained using the energy formula as the fault feature. Finally, by combining this with the support vector machine (SVM) classification learner, fault detection of ITSC in induction motors is achieved. The experimental results show that the average accuracy of this method reaches 96.9%, which can quickly and accurately detect ITSC faults in asynchronous motors and determine the severity of the faults. Furthermore, the average accuracy of SVM in detecting early ITSC faults under no-load conditions is 98.8%, which is higher than other classification learners, including LR, KNN, and NN. This study provides a new idea for induction motor fault detection and can contribute to induction motor maintenance.

Criticality and clinical department prediction of ED patients using machine learning based on heterogeneous medical data

PROBLEM

Emergency triage faces multiple challenges, including limited medical resources and inadequate manual triage nurses, which cause incorrect triage, overcrowding in the emergency department (ED), and long patient waiting time.

OBJECTIVE

This paper aims to propose and validate an accurate and efficient artificial intelligence-based method for effectively ED triage and alleviating the pressure on medical resources.

METHODS

We propose two novel machine learning models, TransNet and TextRNN, for predicting patient severity levels and clinical departments using heterogeneous medical data in ED triage. Our models employ a parallel structure for feature extraction and incorporate an attention mechanism to extract essential information from the fused features, enabling accurate predictions. The models analyze the triage data (2020-2022) from the ED of Beijing University People's Hospital, incorporating variables (demographics, triage vital signs, and chief complaints) to identify patient severity levels and clinical departments. We performed data cleaning, categorization, and encoding first. Then, we divided the available data into a training set (56%), a validation set (24%), and a test set (20%) by random sampling. Finally, our models underwent 5-fold cross-validation and were compared with other state-of-the-art models.

RESULTS

We comprehensively evaluated the proposed models against various Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Traditional Machine Learning (TML), and Transformer-based (TF) models, achieving excellent performance in predicting triage outcomes. Specifically, TextRNN achieved a prediction success rate of 86.23% [85.86-86.70] for severity levels and 94.30% [94.00-94.46] for clinical departments among 161,198 ED visits. Moreover, TransNet demonstrated higher sensitivities of 84.08% and 90.05% for severity levels and clinical departments, respectively, with specificities of 76.48% and 95.16%. The accuracy of our model is 0.87%, 0.18%, 4.29%, and 1.96%, higher than that of the above four family models on average. Furthermore, our method significantly reduced under-triage by 12.06% and over-triage by 17.92% compared to manual triage.

CONCLUSIONS

Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed models fuse heterogeneous medical data in the triage process, successfully predicting patients' triage outcomes. Our models can improve triage efficiency, reduce the under/over-triage rate, and provide physicians with valuable decision-making support.

Impact of dietary piperine on growth performance, immune response, antioxidant status, and immune-related gene expression in pathogen-aggravated Cyprinus carpio

This study investigated the effects of dietary piperine (PIP) on growth performance, digestive enzymes, serum biochemical parameters, antioxidant and immune responses, and gene expression in Cyprinus carpio challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila. Six diets were prepared with PIP doses of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 g/kg, corresponding with the control, PR50, PR100, PR200, PR300, and PR400, respectively. Fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila after 8 weeks of feeding with the respective diets. Weight gain (PWG) and specific growth rate (SGR) were significantly enhanced, whereas feed conversion ratio (FCR) was lowered in PR200. The cumulative post-challenge survival was improved to 68.43% in the PR200 group compared with 28.08% in the control. Serum total protein and albumin levels were significantly enhanced in the PR200 group compared to the control. However, dietary PIP up to 3 g/kg had no significant effect on serum glucose, cortisol, aspartate aminotransferase, or alkaline phosphatase activities; however, the alanine aminotransferase level was lower (P < 0.05) in the PR200 group than in the control. Intestinal amylase, lipase, and protease activities increased in PR300, and intestinal amylase and lipase increased in the PR100 group (P < 0.05). The serum immunological indices (lysozyme, alternative complement pathway, phagocytic activity, and respiratory burst activity) were higher (P < 0.05) in the PR200 group than in the control group. Serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) activities were significantly intensified in PR200-PR300 than in the control group, with the highest activity observed in the PR200 group. Malondialdehyde was significantly lower in the PR200 group than in the control group. Furthermore, SOD, CAT, and Nrf2 expression was strongly upregulated in the liver tissue of the PR200 and PR300 groups compared to that in the control. The transcript levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines viz. IL-1β and TNF-α were significantly upregulated in the kidneys of the PR100 and PR200 post-challenged. In contrast, the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 was significantly downregulated in the kidneys of PR200. The expression of HSP70 was upregulated only in the PR400. Quadratic regression analysis showed that the optimal dietary PIP level was estimated as 2.07-2.13 g/kg to maximize growth performance. Overall, these results indicate that dietary PIP at an appropriate level can improve immunity, cytokine gene expression, and disease resistance in C. carpio.

A Highly Transparent Photo-Electro-Thermal Film with Broadband Selectivity for All-Day Anti-/De-Icing

A photo- and electro-thermal film can convert sunlight and electricity into heat to solve icing problems. Combination of them provides an efficient strategy for all-day anti-/de-icing. However, only opaque surfaces have been reported, due to the mutual exclusiveness between photon absorption and transmission. Herein, a highly transparent and scalable solution-processed photo-electro-thermal film is reported, which exhibits an ultra-broadband selective spectrum to separate the visible light from sunlight and a countertrend suppress of emission in longer wavelength. It absorbs ≈ 85% of invisible sunlight (ultraviolet and near-infrared) for light-heat conversion, meanwhile maintains luminous transmittance > 70%. The reflection of mid-infrared leads to low emissivity (0.41), which further preserves heat on the surface for anti-/de-icing purpose. This ultra-broadband selectivity enables temperature elevation > 40 °C under 1-sun illumination and the mutual support between photo-thermal and electro-thermal effects contributes to > 50% saving of electrical consumption under weak solar exposure (0.4-sun) for maintaining unfrozen surfaces at -35 °C environment. The reverberation from photo-electro-thermal and super-hydrophobic effects illustrates a lubricating removal of grown ice in short time (< 120 s). The self-cleaning ability and the durability under mechanical, electrical, optical, and thermal stresses render the film stable for long-term usage in all-day anti-/de-icing applications.

Aquafeed fermentation improves dietary nutritional quality and benefits feeding behavior, meat flavor, and intestinal microbiota of Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis)

Normally, proper fermentation can be an efficient and widely used method to improve feed quality in animal rearing; however, the studies on crustaceans, especially Eriocheir sinensis, remain limited. This study aimed to investigate whether feed fermentation could meliorate dietary nutritional value and benefit E. sinensis rearing. First, non-fermented feed (NFD) and fermented feed (FD) were produced and assessed, respectively. Then, the "Y" maze feed choice behavior test (180 times; 30 times, 6 rounds) was conducted to assess the attractiveness of these 2 feeds for crabs. Finally, a total of 80 crabs (44.10 ± 0.80 g) were randomly assigned into 2 groups with 4 replicates, and fed the experimental diets for 8 weeks to evaluate the effects of each feed on growth, antioxidant capacity, meat flavor, and intestinal microbiota. In this study, FD showed higher levels of crude protein (P < 0.01), soluble protein (P < 0.01), amino acids (P < 0.05), lactic acid (P < 0.001), and lower levels of crude fiber (P < 0.05) and antinutritional factors (agglutinin, trypsin inhibitor, glycinin, and β-conglycinin) (P < 0.001) than NFD. Additionally, FD was more attractive to crabs than NFD (P < 0.01) and it stimulated the appetite of crabs more than NFD (P < 0.05). The growth performance, feed efficiency, and digestive enzyme activity of FD-fed crabs were significantly higher than those of NFD-fed crabs (P < 0.05). The electronic sensory measurements and free amino acid profiles revealed that the FD diet had positive impacts on the meat flavor of crabs, particularly in "sweet" and "umami" tastes. Moreover, the antioxidant capacity of FD-fed crabs was significantly higher than that of NFD-fed crabs (P < 0.05). Fermented feed also affected the diversity and composition of intestinal microflora. The functional prediction of microbial communities showed that crabs fed FD had a better microecological environment in the intestine. In conclusion, the fermentation of aquafeed could be an effective approach to enhance feed quality and therefore benefit E. sinensis rearing.

A Novel Anderson-Type POMs-Based Hybrids Flame Retardant for Reducing Smoke Release and Toxicity of Epoxy Resins

Smoke emission and smoke toxicity have drawn more attention to improving the fire safety of polymers. In this work, a polyoxometalates (POMs)-based hybrids flame retardant (P-AlMo6 ) epoxy resin (EP) is prepared with toxicity-reduction and smoke-suppression properties via a peptide coupling reaction between POMs and organic molecules with double DOPO (bisDOPA). It combines the good compatibility of the organic molecule and the superior catalytic performance of POMs. Compared to pure EP, the glass transition temperature and flexural modulus of EP composite with 5 wt.% P-AlMo6 (EP/P-AlMo6 -5) are raised by 12.3 °C and 57.75%, respectively. Notably, at low flame-retardant addition, the average CO to CO2 ratio (Av-COY/Av-CO2 Y) is reduced by 33.75%. Total heat release (THR) and total smoke production (TSP) are lowered by 44.4% and 53.7%, respectively. The Limited Oxygen Index (LOI) value achieved 31.7% and obtained UL-94 V-0 rating. SEM, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and TG-FTIR are applied to analyze the flame-retardant mechanism in condensed and gas phase. Outstanding flame retardant, low smoke toxicity properties are attained due to the catalytic carbonization ability of metal oxides Al2 O3 and MoO3 produced from the breakdown of POMs. This work advances the development of POMs-based hybrids flame retardants with low smoke toxicity properties.

Automatic control method for freeform surface shapes

Designing freeform optics with high degrees of freedom can improve their optical performances; however, there are high requirements for controlling the surface shapes of such optics. Optical designers need to add constraints to the optimization process and make repeated adjustments to ensure the manufacturability of these shapes; this process is cumbersome and relies heavily on the experience of the designer. In this study, an automatic control method for freeform surface shapes is proposed. By adding an outer loop to the optimization process, the principal curvature and sag departure of the sampling points are gradually controlled during the optimization cycle based on the system requirements and surface evaluation results. The method was implemented in CODE V and successfully applied to a design example in freeform prism optics.

[Observation of early clinical efficacy of unilateral biportal endoscopy technique in the treatment of lumbar postoperative adjacent segmental diseases]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate early clinical efficacy of unilateral biportal endoscopy technique for the treatment of lumbar postoperative adjacent segmental diseases.

METHODS

Fourteen patients with lumbar postoperative adjacent segmental diseases were treated with unilateral biportal endoscopy technique from June 2019 to June 2020. Among them, there were 9 males and 5 females, aged from 52 to 73 years old, and the interval between primary and revision operations ranged from 19 to 64 months. Adjacent segmental degeneration occurred after lumbar fusion in 10 patients and after lumbar nonfusion fixation in 4 patients. All the patients received unilateral biportal endoscopy assisted posterior unilateral lamina decompression or unilateral approach to the contralateral decompression. The operation time, postoperative hospital stay and complications were observed. The visual analogue scale (VAS) of low back pain and leg pain, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) score were recorded before operation and at 3 days, 3 months, and 6 months after operation.

RESULTS

All procedures were successfully completed. Surgical duration ranged from 32 to 151 min. Postoperative CT showed adequate decompression and preservation of most joints. Out of bed walking 1 to 3 days after surgery, postoperative hospital stay was 1 to 8 days, and postoperative follow-up was 6 to 11 months. All 14 patients returned to normal life within 3 weeks after surgery, and VAS, ODI, and mJOA scores improved significantly at 3 days and 3, 6 months after surgery. One patient occurred cerebrospinal fluid leak after operation, received local compression suture, and the wound healed after conservative treatment. One patient occurred postoperative cauda equina neurologic deficit, which was gradually recovered about 1 month after rehabilitation therapy. One patients advented transient pain of lower limbs after surgery, and the symptoms were relieved after 7 days of treatment with hormones, dehydration drugs and symptomatic management.

CONCLUSION

Unilateral biportal endoscopy technique has a good early clinical efficacy in the treatment of lumbar postoperative adjacent segmental diseases, which may provide a new minimally invasive, non-fixation option for the treatment of adjacent segment disease.

A Novel P/N/Si-Containing Vanillin-Based Compound for a Flame-Retardant, Tough Yet Strong Epoxy Thermoset

It is still extremely challenging to endow epoxy resins (EPs) with excellent flame retardancy and high toughness. In this work, we propose a facile strategy of combining rigid-flexible groups, promoting groups and polar phosphorus groups with the vanillin compound, which implements a dual functional modification for EPs. With only 0.22% phosphorus loading, the modified EPs obtain a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 31.5% and reach V-0 grade in UL-94 vertical burning tests. Particularly, the introduction of P/N/Si-containing vanillin-based flame retardant (DPBSi) improves the mechanical properties of EPs, including toughness and strength. Compared with EPs, the storage modulus and impact strength of EP composites can increase by 61.1% and 240%, respectively. Therefore, this work introduces a novel molecular design strategy for constructing an epoxy system with high-efficiency fire safety and excellent mechanical properties, giving it immense potential for broadening the application fields of EPs.

1,5-AG suppresses pro-inflammatory polarization of macrophages and promotes the survival of B-ALL in vitro by upregulating CXCL14

B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is one of the most common malignancies in children. Despite advances in treatment, the role of the tumor microenvironment in B-ALL remains poorly understood. Among the key components of the immune microenvironment, macrophages play a critical role in the progression of the disease. However, recent research has suggested that abnormal metabolites may influence the function of macrophages, altering the immune microenvironment and promoting tumor growth. Our previous non-targeted metabolomic detection revealed that the metabolite 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) level in the peripheral blood of children newly diagnosed with B-ALL was significantly elevated. Except for its direct influence on leukemia cells, the effect of 1,5-AG on macrophages is still unclear. Herein, we demonstrated new potential therapeutic targets by focusing on the effect of 1,5-AG on macrophages. We used polarization-induced macrophages to determine how 1,5-AG acted on M1-like polarization and screened out the target gene CXCL14 via transcriptome sequencing. Furthermore, we constructed CXCL14 knocked-down macrophages and a macrophage-leukemia cell coculture model to validate the interaction between macrophages and leukemia cells. We discovered that 1,5-AG upregulated the CXCL14 expression, thereby inhibiting M1-like polarization. CXCL14 knockdown restored the M1-like polarization of macrophages and induced leukemia cells apoptosis in the coculture model. Our findings offer new possibilities for the genetic engineering of human macrophages to rehabilitate their immune activity against B-ALL in cancer immunotherapy.

LDH@Boronate Polymer Core-Shell Nanoparticles: Nanostructure Design for Synergistically Enhancing the Flame Retardancy of Epoxy Resin

As a promising nanofiller, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) can advance the fire safety of epoxy resin (EP), but so far, due to the problems of dispersion and low efficiency, it has still been a challenge to incorporate the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of EP nanocomposites effectively under the circumstance of a low additive amount. In this work, we take LDHs as the template, via the adsorption of a catechol group and the condensation polymerization between catechol groups and phenylboric acid groups, to prepare a core-shell structured nanoparticle LDH@BP, which contains rich flame-retardant elements. EP/LDH@BP nanocomposites were prepared by introducing LDH@BP into EP. The experimental results indicate that, compared with the original LDH, LDH@BP disperses uniformly in the EP matrix, and the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of EP/LDH@BP are significantly improved. At a relatively low content (5 wt%), EP/LDH@BP reached the rating of V-0 in the UL-94 test, LOI was increased to 29.1%, and peak heat release rate (PHRR) was reduced by 35.9% in cone calorimeter tests, which effectively inhibited the release of heat and toxic smoke during the combustion process of EP. Simultaneously, the mechanical properties of EP/LDH@BP have been improved satisfactorily. The above results derive from the reasonable architectural design of organic-inorganic nano-hybrid flame retardants and provide a novel method for the construction of efficient and balanced EP nanocomposite system with LDHs.

pH-dependent water permeability switching and its memory in MoS2 membranes

Intelligent transport of molecular species across different barriers is critical for various biological functions and is achieved through the unique properties of biological membranes1-4. Two essential features of intelligent transport are the ability to (1) adapt to different external and internal conditions and (2) memorize the previous state5. In biological systems, the most common form of such intelligence is expressed as hysteresis6. Despite numerous advances made over previous decades on smart membranes, it remains a challenge to create a synthetic membrane with stable hysteretic behaviour for molecular transport7-11. Here we demonstrate the memory effects and stimuli-regulated transport of molecules through an intelligent, phase-changing MoS2 membrane in response to external pH. We show that water and ion permeation through 1T' MoS2 membranes follows a pH-dependent hysteresis with a permeation rate that switches by a few orders of magnitude. We establish that this phenomenon is unique to the 1T' phase of MoS2, due to the presence of surface charge and exchangeable ions on the surface. We further demonstrate the potential application of this phenomenon in autonomous wound infection monitoring and pH-dependent nanofiltration. Our work deepens understanding of the mechanism of water transport at the nanoscale and opens an avenue for the development of intelligent membranes.

Design and fabrication method of holographic waveguide near-eye display with 2D eye box expansion

Augmented reality near-eye display (AR-NED) technology has attracted enormous interests for its widespread potential applications. In this paper, two-dimensional (2D) holographic waveguide integrated simulation design and analysis, holographic optical elements (HOEs) exposure fabrication, prototype performance evaluation and imaging analysis are completed. In the system design, a 2D holographic waveguide AR-NED integrated with a miniature projection optical system is presented to achieve a larger 2D eye box expansion (EBE). A design method for controlling the luminance uniformity of 2D-EPE holographic waveguide by dividing the two thicknesses of HOEs is proposed, which is easy to fabricate. The optical principle and design method of the HOE-based 2D-EBE holographic waveguide are described in detail. In the system fabrication, laser exposure fabrication method of eliminating stray light for HOEs is proposed, and a prototype system is fabricated and demonstrated. The properties of the fabricated HOEs and the prototype are analyzed in detail. The experimental results verified that the 2D-EBE holographic waveguide has a diagonal field of view (FOV) of 45°, an ultra-thin thickness of 1 mm, and an eye box of 16 mm × 13 mm at an eye relief (ERF) of 18 mm, the MTF values of different FOVs at different 2D-EPE positions can be better than 0.2 at 20 lp/mm, and the whole luminance uniformity is 58%.

[Acupoints compatibility rules of acupuncture for depression disease based on data mining technology]

Based on data mining technology, the acupoints compatibility rules of acupuncture for depression diseases were explored. The randomized controlled trial (RCT) articles regarding acupuncture for depression diseases published from establishment of database to September 2nd, 2022 were searched in CNKI database, Wangfang database, VIP database, SinoMed database, PubMed, EMbase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library. The use frequency of acupoints, meridian tropism, selection of special acupoints and acupoint association rules for five common depression diseases, including primary depression, post-stroke depression, menopausal syndrome, psychoneurosis and anxiety disorder, were analyzed by Python programming language. Cytoscape software was used to analyze the acupoint association and the disease-acupoint co-occurrence network. As a result, totally 387 articles were included, and 319 acupoints prescriptions for the above five common depression diseases were extracted, involving 159 acupoints. The use frequency of acupoints was 2 574 times in total. The frequently-used acupoints were Baihui (GV 20), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Taichong (LR 3), Neiguan (PC 6), Shenmen (HT 7), Yintang (GV 24⁺), Zusanli (ST 36), Hegu (LI 4), Sishencong (EX-HN 1) and Taixi (KI 3), etc. The frequently involved meridians were the governor vessel, foot-taiyang bladder meridian, foot-taiyin spleen meridian, and foot-jueyin liver meridian. The frequency of the special acupoints from high to low was crossing points, five-shu points, yuan-primary points, back-shu points, luo-connecting points, and eight confluent points, etc, which were often used in combination with "Baihui (GV 20)-Yintang (GV 24⁺)" (the highest degree of association). At the same time, the analysis of the co-occurrence network of depression diseases and acupoints showed that the core acupoints group of acupuncture for depression diseases were Baihui (GV 20), Taichong (LR 3), Shenmen (HT 7), Zusanli (ST 36), Neiguan (PC 6) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6). In conclusion, acupuncture treatment for depression diseases has gradually formed a rule of acupoint compatibility, with special acupoint as the main body and "unblocking the governor vessel, and regulating the spirit and qi " as the main therapeutic principle.

End-of-Life Communication Skills Training for Undergraduate Nursing Students to Address Cultural Obstacles in China

Nurses face many difficulties and challenges related to how patients and their families deal with communication about end-of-life (EOL) care in China because of the strong influence of traditional Chinese culture. Moreover, education and training opportunities in EOL communication skills for nursing students are rare in mainland China. This study designed a progressive case involving a common EOL communication dilemma related to traditional Chinese culture and trained 50 undergraduate nursing students in EOL communication skills. A quasi-experimental design was used to compare the training outcomes of nursing students who were divided into a standardized patient simulation group and a role-playing group. The role-playing group (23 participants) was trained via group case discussion and role-playing among classmates, while the standardized patient simulation group (27 participants) completed EOL communication training by interacting with standardized patients and their families in a high-fidelity simulation. Attitudes toward death, self-confidence in EOL communication, and communication learning were evaluated in both groups during preintervention and postintervention. The results showed that all 3 variables improved after the intervention. This study shows that EOL communication skills training has a positive effect on nursing students to a certain extent.

Reversible bipolar thermopower of ionic thermoelectric polymer composite for cyclic energy generation

The giant thermopower of ionic thermoelectric materials has attracted great attention for waste-heat recovery technologies. However, generating cyclic power by ionic thermoelectric modules remains challenging, since the ions cannot travel across the electrode interface. Here, we reported a reversible bipolar thermopower (+20.2 mV K^-1 to -10.2 mV K^-1) of the same composite by manipulating the interactions of ions and electrodes. Meanwhile, a promising ionic thermoelectric generator was proposed to achieve cyclic power generation under a constant heat course only by switching the external electrodes that can effectively realize the alternating dominated thermodiffusion of cations and anions. It eliminates the necessity to change the thermal contact between material and heat, nor does it require re-establish the temperature differences, which can favor improving the efficiency of the ionic thermoelectrics. Furthermore, the developed micro-thermal sensors demonstrated high sensitivity and responsivity in light detecting, presenting innovative impacts on exploring next-generation ionic thermoelectric devices.

Dietary T-2 toxin induces transcriptomic changes in hepatopancreas of Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) via nutrition metabolism and apoptosis-related pathways

Long-term feed route exposure to T-2 toxin was proved to elicit growth retarding effects and induction of oxidative stress and apoptosis in Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). However, no study with a holistic perspective has been conducted to date to further describe the in-depth toxicological mechanism of T-2 toxin in E.sinensis. In this study, an RNA-Sequencing (RNA-seq) was used in this study to investigate the effects of feed supplementation with 0 mg/kg and 4 mg/kg T-2 toxin on the hepatopancreas transcriptome of E.sinensis and establish a hepatopancreas transcriptome library of T-2 toxin chronically exposed crabs after five weeks, where 14 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened out across antioxidant, apoptosis, autophagy, glucolipid metabolism and protein synthesis. The actual expression of all the DEGs (Caspase, ATG4, PERK, ACSL, CAT, BIRC2, HADHA, HADHB, ACOX, PFK, eEFe1, eIF4ɑ, RPL13Ae) was also analyzed by real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). It was demonstrated that long-term intake of large amounts of T-2 toxin could impair antioxidant enzyme activity, promote apoptosis and protective autophagy, disrupt lipid metabolism and inhibit protein synthesis in the hepatopancreas of E.sinensis. In conclusion, this study explored the toxicity mechanism of T-2 toxin on the hepatopancreas of E.sinensis at the mRNA level, which lays the foundation for further investigation of the molecular toxicity mechanism of T-2 toxin in aquatic crustaceans.

Accuracy and economic evaluation of screening tests for undiagnosed COPD among hypertensive individuals in Brazil

In Brazil, prevalence of diagnosed COPD among adults aged 40 years and over is 16% although over 70% of cases remain undiagnosed. Hypertension is common and well-recorded in primary care, and frequently co-exists with COPD because of common causes such as tobacco smoking, therefore we conducted a cross-sectional screening test accuracy study in nine Basic Health Units in Brazil, among hypertensive patients aged ≥40 years to identify the optimum screening test/combinations to detect undiagnosed COPD. We compared six index tests (four screening questionnaires, microspirometer and peak flow) against the reference test defined as those below the lower limit of normal (LLN-GLI) on quality diagnostic spirometry, with confirmed COPD at clinical review. Of 1162 participants, 6.8% (n = 79) had clinically confirmed COPD. Peak flow had a higher specificity but lower sensitivity than microspirometry (sensitivity 44.3% [95% CI 33.1, 55.9], specificity 95.5% [95% CI 94.1, 96.6]). SBQ performed well compared to the other questionnaires (sensitivity 75.9% [95% CI 65.0, 84.9], specificity 59.2% [95% CI 56.2, 62.1]). A strategy requiring both SBQ and peak flow to be positive yielded sensitivity of 39.2% (95% CI 28.4, 50.9) and specificity of 97.0% (95% CI 95.7, 97.9). The use of simple screening tests was feasible within the Brazilian primary care setting. The combination of SBQ and peak flow appeared most efficient, when considering performance of the test, cost and ease of use (costing £1690 (5554 R$) with 26.7 cases detected per 1,000 patients). Isolated right ventricular Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in Guillain-Barré syndrome

BACKGROUND

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy can present itself in the most varied clinical forms, with extremely variable electrocardiogram anomalies and presence of comorbidities with a significant systemic commitment. Guillain-Barré Syndrome concomitant with isolated right ventricular Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a rare entity. Here we present a patient with Guillain-Barré syndrome who had electrocardiogram abnormalities consistent with isolated right ventricular Takotsubo cardiomyopathy which have not been described in literature. This case report may prompt early identification of right ventricular involvement in neurological comorbidities, especially if the electrocardiogram is not frankly suggestive of an acute ischemic condition linked to coronary artery disease.

CASE PRESENTATION

A 37-year-old woman was misdiagnosed as acute coronary syndrome because of abnormally elevated troponin T level and electrocardiogram findings in the Emergency Department. Due to absence of any significant stenosis in the main coronary artery, the primary diagnosis was ruled out. Based on reanalysis of the ECG abnormalities, the patient was diagnosed as a case of isolated right ventricular Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in Guillain-Barré Syndrome. This case demonstrates the importance of electrocardiogram as a critical tool to identify isolated right ventricular Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Indeed, in this case, the electrocardiogram abnormalities were distributed beyond the territory of a single coronary artery distribution.

CONCLUSIONS

The described electrocardiogram findings of isolated right ventricular Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in Guillain-Barré Syndrome may facilitate identification of right ventricular involvement in neurological diseases.

Uncooled self-powered hemispherical biomimetic pit organ for mid- to long-infrared imaging

Infrared vision is highly desirable for applications in multifarious fields. Of the few species with this visual capability, snakes have exceptional infrared perception with the assistance of pit organs. Inspired by the pit organ design we present here a hemispherical biomimetic infrared imaging device. The devices use high-density ionic thermoelectric polymer nanowire arrays that serve as the sensing nerve cells. The individual nanowires exhibit notable voltage response to temperature variation in test objects. An infrared sensor array with 625 pixels on the hemispherical substrate is successfully demonstrated with an ultrawide field of view up to 135°. The device can image body temperature objects without a cooling system and external power supply. This work opens up opportunities for the design and fabrication of bioinspired infrared imaging devices based on emerging ionic thermoelectric materials.

Fast Ion Transport Mechanism and Electrochemical Stability of Trivalent Metal Iodide-based Na Superionic Conductors Na3XI6 (X = Sc, Y, La, and In)

The exploration of solid-state sodium superionic conductors with high sodium-ion conductivity, structural and electrochemical stability, and grand interface compatibility has become the key to the next-generation energy storage applications with high energy density and long cycling life. Among them, halide-based compounds exhibit great potential with the higher electronegativity of halogens than that of the sulfur element. In this work, combined with first-principles calculation and ab initio molecular dynamic simulation, the investigation of trivalent metal iodide-based Na superionic conductors C2/m-Na₃XI₆ (X = Sc, Y, La, and In) was conducted, including the fast ion transport mechanism, structural stability, and interface electrochemical compatibility with electrode materials. Along with the tetrahedral-center saddle site-predominant three-dimensional octahedral-tetrahedral-octahedral diffusion network, C2/m-Na₃XI₆ possesses the merits of high Na ionic conductivities of 0.36, 0.35, and 0.20 mS cm^-1 for Na₃ScI₆, Na₃YI₆, and Na₃LaI₆, respectively. Benefiting from its structural stabilities, C2/m-Na₃XI₆ exhibits lower interface reaction energy and better electrochemical compatibility in contact with both Na metal and high-voltage poly-anion (fluoro)phosphate cathode materials than those of sulfide-based ones. Our theoretical work provides rational design principles for screening and guiding iodide-based C2/m-Na₃XI₆ (X = Sc, Y, La, and In) as promising Na superionic conductor candidates used in all-solid-state energy storage applications.

Nanoparticle-on-Mirror Metamaterials for Full-Spectrum Selective Solar Energy Harvesting

Most broadband metamaterial absorbers are realized by patterning periodic arrays of plasmonic nanoparticles (>100 nm) on dielectric/metallic substrates to enable both electric and magnetic resonances. These metamaterials, however, require costly nanolithographic top-down techniques for fabrication. Here, we demonstrate new-concept nanoparticle-on-mirror (NoM) metamaterial absorbers by densely packing plasmonic nanoparticles of much smaller size (∼30 nm) on metal films directly. Such a simple but rational design enables the use of all-solution-based bottom-up processes. Because of the decoupling of electric and magnetic polarizations in these ultrasmall nanoparticles, excellent impedance match and near-perfect light absorption can be achieved in a broad band over the solar spectrum with weak thermal emission. Proof-of-concept large-area NoM metamaterial absorbers that offer a solar absorptance of 94% but a low IR emittance of 2% are experimentally demonstrated. The outstanding performance, bottom-up process, and great compatibility render the design promising for efficient and large-scale solar energy harvesting.

Dynamics of gut microbiota during pregnancy in women with TPOAb-positive subclinical hypothyroidism: a prospective cohort study

Background

Anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) positivity can contribute to inhibit thyroxine synthesis. Gut microbiota can interact with metabolic or immune diseases. However, dynamics of gut microbiota from the second (T2) to the third trimester (T3) in women with TPOAb-positive/negative subclinical hypothyroidism (TPOAb⁺/TPOAb⁻ SCH) have not been reported. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate whether gut microbiota can be potential therapeutic targets for managing TPOAb⁺ SCH.

Methods

In this single-center prospective cohort study, we observed gut microbiota dynamics by sequencing 16S rRNA from fecal samples collected in T2 (20–23^+ 6 weeks) and T3 (28–33^+ 6 weeks). TPOAb⁺/TPOAb⁻ SCH were stratified depending on whether or not they used levothyroxine (LT₄) during the pregnancy (LT₄⁺/LT₄⁻). Microbiome bioinformatics analyses were performed using QIIME2. The linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) was used for the quantitative analysis of biomarkers. Functional profiling was performed with PICRUSt2.

Results

Distinct gut microbiota dynamics from T2 to T3 were noted in the TPOAb⁻ (n = 68) and TPOAb⁺ (n = 64) SCH groups. The TPOAb⁺ LT₄⁻ group was characterized by enriched bacterial amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) of Prevotella in T2 and Bacteria, Lachnospirales, Lachnospiraceae, Blautia, and Agathobacter in T3 and by depleted ASVs of Gammaproteobacteria, Enterobacterales, and Enterobacteriaceae in T2 and Actinobacteriota, Coriobacteriia, Actinobacteria, Coriobacteriales, Bifidobacteriales, Bifidobacteriaceae, Bifidobacterium, Dorea formicigenerans, and Bifidobacterium longum in T3. The TPOAb⁺ LT₄⁺ group was characterized by enriched bacterial ASVs of Blautia, Streptococcus salivarius, and Bifidobacterium longum in T3 and by depleted ASVs of Bacteroidota, Bacteroidia, Bacteroidales, and Prevotella in T2 and Agathobacter in T3. Moreover, we identified 53 kinds of metabolic functions that were mainly involved in sugar, lipid, and amino acid metabolism.

Conclusions

Our results indicated that low dynamics of gut microbiota composition and high dynamics of its metabolic function from T2 to T3 were associated with TPOAb⁺ SCH. We concluded that gut microbiota could be new targets for treatment of TPOAb⁺ SCH during pregnancy.

Scintillation light detection in the 6-m drift-length ProtoDUNE Dual Phase liquid argon TPC

DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6  ×  6  ×  6 m 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019-2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties.

The cross-interface energy-filtering effect at organic/inorganic interfaces balances the trade-off between thermopower and conductivity

The energy-filtering effect has been widely employed to elucidate the enhanced thermoelectric properties of organic/inorganic hybrids. However, the traditional Mott criterion cannot identify the energy-filtering effect of organic/inorganic hybrids due to the limitations of the Hall effect measurement in determining their carrier concentration. In this work, a carrier concentration-independent strategy under the theoretical framework of the Kang-Snyder model is proposed and demonstrated using PANI/MWCNT composites. The result indicates that the energy-filtering effect is triggered on increasing the temperature to 220 K. The energy-filtering effect gives a symmetry-breaking characteristic to the density of states of the charge carriers and leads to a higher thermopower of PANI/MWCNT than that of each constituent. From a morphological perspective, a paracrystalline PANI layer with a thickness of 3 nm is spontaneously assembled on the MWCNT network and serves as a metallic percolation pathway for carriers, resulting in a 5.56-fold increase in conductivity. The cooperative 3D carrier transport mode, including the 1D metallic transport along the paracrystalline PANI and the 2D cross-interface energy-filtering transport, co-determines a 4-fold increase in the power factors of PANI/MWCNT at 300 K. This work provides a physical insight into the improvement of the thermoelectric performance of organic/inorganic hybrids via the energy-filtering effect.

Uniformity improvement of two-dimensional surface relief grating waveguide display using particle swarm optimization

Augmented reality head-mounted displays (AR-HMDs) based on diffractive waveguides have been a challenging and rewarding research topic focusing on near-eye displays. The size of the exit pupil and uniformity of the image illuminance are two important factors that affect the display performance of the diffractive waveguide. In this paper, a novel method for optimizing high uniformity of two-dimensional (2D) diffractive waveguide is proposed. A straight-line 2D surface relief grating (SRG) waveguide with divided grating regions is designed. An illuminance uniformity evaluation model of the energy propagation process is established, and non-sequential ray tracing is utilized to optimize the diffraction efficiency of multi-regions grating to achieve illuminance uniformity distribution. Then, the uniformity distribution of the diffraction efficiency in different fields of view (FOVs) is realized by combining the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and rigorous couple wave analysis (RCWA) to optimize the grating structural parameters, which further ensures the uniformity of the exit pupil illuminance and angular illuminance. The waveguide with exit pupil expansion (EPE) has exit pupil size of 16 mm × 14 mm at an eye relief (ERF) of 20 mm, exit pupil illuminance uniformity of 91%, and angular uniformity illuminance of 64%.

Lipid metabolism, immune and apoptosis transcriptomic responses of the hepatopancreas of Chinese mitten crab to the exposure to microcystin-LR

Global warming is favouring the incidence, intensity and duration of harmful cyanobacterial blooms. Microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a hepatotoxic agent, is produced during cyanobacterial blooms. To understand the molecular mechanisms of acute hepatotoxic effect of low doses of MC-LR in crab, we examined differentially expressed genes in samples of the hepatopancreas of Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) collected in 48 h after injections of MC-LR at doses of 0, 25, 50, and 75 µg/kg. The results revealed that MC-LR induced changes in corresponding gene led to the accumulation of triglycerides. MC-LR exposure affected sterol metabolism. Apoptosis-related genes such as Fas-L, Bcl-XL, Cytc, AiF, p53, PERK, calpain, CASP2, CASP7, α-tubulin, PARP, GF, G12, and PKC were upregulated. Conversely, expression levels of CASP10 and ASK1 were downregulated. Genes related to the regulation of actin cytoskeleton (Rho, ROCK, MLCP, MLC, PAK, and PFN) were upregulated. Further, expression levels of genes encoding fatty acid elongation-related enzymes were upregulated, but the expression of genes related to fatty acid synthesis was slightly down regulated. Taken together, these results demonstrated the hepatic toxicity and molecular mechanisms of changes in lipid metabolism, immune and apoptosis in Chinese mitten crab under the MC-LR-induced stress, which is the first report on crabs and performs a comprehensive analysis and a new insight of the molecular toxicological responses in crabs.

Efficacy of Donated Milk in Early Nutrition of Preterm Infants: A Meta-Analysis

Background: Preterm birth is associated with an increased risk of many complications, which is a main public health problem worldwide with social and economic consequences. Human milk from breast feeding has been proved to be the optimal nutrition strategy for preterm infants when available. However, the lack of human milk from mothers makes formula widely used in clinical practice. In recent years, donated breast milk has gained popularity as an alternative choice which can provide human milk oligosaccharides and other bioactive substances. Objective: We aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the nutritional effects of donated breast milk on preterm infants compared with formula. Method: In the present study, we searched Medline, Web of Science, Embase, clinicaltrials.gov, the China national knowledge infrastructure, and the Cochrane central register of controlled trials for candidate randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Results: A total of 1390 patients were enrolled in 11 RCTs and meta-analysis results showed that donated breast milk is also more advantageous in reducing the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC, RR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.48 to 0.93, p = 0.02), reducing the duration of parenteral nutrition (MD = −2.39, 95% CI = −3.66 to −1.13, p = 0.0002) and the time of full enteral feeding (MD = −0.33, 95% CI = −3.23 to 2.57, p = 0.0002). In comparison, formula significantly promotes the growth of premature infants, including their weight gain (MD = −3.45, 95% CI = −3.68 to −3.21, p < 0.00001), head growth (MD = −0.07, 95% CI = −0.08 to −0.06, p < 0.00001) and body length (MD = −0.13, 95% CI = −0.15 to −0.11, p < 0.00001), and reduces the time it takes for premature infants to regain birth weight (MD = 6.60, 95% CI = 6.11 to 7.08, p < 0.00001. Conclusion: Compared with formula, donated breast milk could significantly reduce the incidence of NEC, the duration of parenteral nutrition, and the time of full enteral feeding. Adding fortifiers in donated milk could make it as effective as formula in promoting the physical growth of premature infants.

A Solution-Processed Inorganic Emitter with High Spectral Selectivity for Efficient Subambient Radiative Cooling in Hot Humid Climates

Daytime radiative cooling provides an eco-friendly solution to space cooling with zero energy consumption. Despite significant advances, most state-of-the-art radiative coolers show broadband infrared emission with low spectral selectivity, which limits their cooling temperatures, especially in hot humid regions. Here, an all-inorganic narrowband emitter comprising a solution-derived SiO_x N_y layer sandwiched between a reflective substrate and a self-assembly monolayer of SiO₂ microspheres is reported. It shows a high and diffusive solar reflectance (96.4%) and strong infrared-selective emittance (94.6%) with superior spectral selectivity (1.46). Remarkable subambient cooling of up to 5 °C in autumn and 2.5 °C in summer are achieved under high humidity without any solar shading or convection cover at noontime in a subtropical coastal city, Hong Kong. Owing to the all-inorganic hydrophobic structure, the emitter shows outstanding resistance to ultraviolet and water in long-term durability tests. The scalable-solution-based fabrication renders this stable high-performance emitter promising for large-scale deployment in various climates.

Bactericidal efficacy of non-thermal plasma activation against Aeromonas hydrophila and immunological responses of koi (Cyprinus carpio haematopterus)

In the aquaculture industry, an efficient and safe water purification system is important to prevent mass mortality by virulent pathogens. As extensive use of traditional methods (e.g.: povidone-iodine, ozone, ultraviolet irradiation, formalin, and chlorine dioxide) have adverse effects on cultured fish, an appropriate and alternative water purification method is vital for the sustainability of the industry. Non-thermal plasma technology has been successfully used for various biomedical purposes (e.g: food sterilization, medical device disinfection, wound healing, cancer therapy, etc.) and has great potential to be used as a sterilizing system. However, few studies have been conducted on its usefulness in the aquaculture industry. In this study, we investigated the bactericidal efficacy of plasma-activated water induced by non-thermal plasma and its histopathological as well as immunological adverse effects on koi. A highly virulent Aeromonas hydrophila SNU HS7, which caused massive mortality of koi, was used for this study. Non-thermal plasma was applied for 10 min to the fish tanks with 1.2 × 10⁹ CFU/mL SNU HS7 using PLMB-20 system to confirm the sterilization efficacy and to observe the survival and immunological reaction of koi for 14 days. As a result, gross pathological, histopathological, and immunological investigations did not reveal any significant adverse effects in fish as compared to the control groups. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study showing that non-thermal plasma can be used for sterilization of rearing water without giving significant physiological damage to the fish, even under the assumption of extreme situations. As plasma can effectively sterilize not only bacteria but also other unknown pathogens, the results of this study are showing a promising future in purifying water in aquaculture practice.

Genomic characterization of bacteriophage pSal-SNUABM-01, a novel elongated-head phage infecting Salmonella sp

Salmonellosis is a disease of critical concern for public health, and the use of bacteriophages is among the most promising approaches to combating Salmonella. As Salmonella has various serotypes and strains, and bacteriophages are virulent to specific hosts, it is important to isolate phages and evaluate interactions with their hosts. In the present study, a novel Salmonella-infecting bacteriophage, pSal-SNUABM-01, was isolated and characterized. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the bacteriophage is a member of the family Podoviridae and possesses an elongated head and a short tail. The phage genome is circular and 89,500 bp in size. A total of 162 open reading frames were predicted, eight of which were tRNAs. Morphological and genomic analysis revealed that pSal-SNUABM-01 is closely related to phage 7-11. In phylogenetic analysis, pSal-SNUABM-01 and 7-11 did not cluster together with the members of any established genus, suggesting that these two phages comprise a novel genus. The results of this study enhance our understanding of the phylogeny of the family Podoviridae and might be applicable to the development of bacteriophage treatments against Salmonella infections.

Selectively tuning ionic thermopower in all-solid-state flexible polymer composites for thermal sensing

There has been increasing interest in the emerging ionic thermoelectric materials with huge ionic thermopower. However, it's challenging to selectively tune the thermopower of all-solid-state polymer materials because the transportation of ions in all-solid-state polymers is much more complex than those of liquid-dominated gels. Herein, this work provides all-solid-state polymer materials with a wide tunable thermopower range (+20~-6 mV K-1), which is different from previously reported gels. Moreover, the mechanism of p-n conversion in all-solid-state ionic thermoelectric polymer material at the atomic scale was presented based on the analysis of Eastman entropy changes by molecular dynamics simulation, which provides a general strategy for tuning ionic thermopower and is beneficial to understand the fundamental mechanism of the p-n conversion. Furthermore, a self-powered ionic thermoelectric thermal sensor fabricated by the developed p- and n-type polymers demonstrated high sensitivity and durability, extending the application of ionic thermoelectric materials.

Design and Performance Estimation of Mixed-Robotic Fulfillment System

E-commerce retailers face the challenge to assemble a large number of time-critical picking orders. Common parts-to-picker autonomous intelligent warehouses such as automated vehicle storage and retrieval system and robotic mobile fulfillment system are often a little ill-suited for these prerequisites. A mixed-robotic fulfillment system is a hybrid robot picking system based on multi-device collaboration. It is a fusion innovation of traditional automated vehicle storage and retrieval system and robotic mobile fulfillment system. This paper comprehensively considers the characteristics of the system and customer demand, through the construction of a queuing network model to evaluate the performance of the system. A series of problems such as order service time, throughput capacity, and vehicle quantity configuration are analyzed experimentally. The validity of the model is verified by a simulation model.

A study on segmentation and refinement of key human body parts by integrating manual measurements

Optimal ergonomic design for consumer goods (such as garments and furniture) cannot be perfectly realised because of imprecise interactions between products and human models. In this paper, we propose a new body classification method that integrates human skeleton features, expert experience, manual measurement methods, and statistical analysis (principal component analysis and K-means clustering). Taking the upper body of young males as an example, the proposed method enables the classification of upper bodies into a number of levels at three key body segments (the arm root [seven levels], the shoulder [five levels], and the torso [below the shoulder, eight levels]). From several experiments, we found that the proposed method can lead to more accurate results than the classical classification methods based on three-dimensional (3 D) human model and can provide semantic knowledge of human body shapes. This includes interpretations of the classification results at these three body segments and key feature point positions, as determined by skeleton features and expert experience. Quantitative analysis also demonstrates that the reconstruction errors satisfy the requirements of garment design and production. Practitioner summary The acquisition and classification of anthropometric data constitute the basis of ergonomic design. This paper presents a new method for body classification that leads to more accurate results than classical classification methods (which are based on human body models). We also provide semantic knowledge about the shape of human body. The proposed method can also be extended to 3 D body modelling and to the design of other consumer products, such as furniture, seats, and cars. Protective effects of dietary icariin on lipopolysaccharide-induced acute oxidative stress and hepatopancreas injury in Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis

To investigate the effects of dietary icariin (ICA) supplementation on acute oxidative stress and hepatopancreatic injury induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection in Eriocheir sinensis, an 8-week feeding trial of crabs was conducted using 4 diets with different supplementation levels of ICA (0, 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg diet weight, respectively), and then challenged with LPS of 400 μg/kg body weight for 6 h. Results showed that 100 mg/kg ICA supplementation increased the antioxidant capacity, reduced the stress-related indicators in haemolymph, strengthen the mitochondrial membrane potential, and reduce apoptosis compared to the single LPS-treated crabs. The expressions of apoptosis-related genes and proteins were also evaluated to further understand the effects of dietary ICA pretreatment on LPS-induced cell apoptosis. As a result, dietary 100 mg/kg diet weight ICA pre-addition significantly down-regulated the expression of HSP60, HSP70, Caspase 3c, Caspase 8, Caspase 3, Caspase 9, P38, and Bax (P < 0.05), and alleviated the suppressed expression of PI3K, AKT, MEK, and Bcl-2 (P < 0.05) in crabs challenged with LPS. Overall, this research reveals that ICA supplementation of 100 mg/kg diet weight could enhance the resistance to oxidative damage and apoptosis in E. sinensis facing LPS challenge.

Motion compensation using joint-sub-band phase unwrapping for synthetic aperture sonar

Displaced phase center antenna (DPCA) micro-navigation has been widely applied in the motion compensation of synthetic aperture sonars (SASs). Estimating the time delay is the most important step for DPCA-based motion compensation. However, at present, the existing methods of estimating the time delay in motion compensation are not sufficiently accurate, which limits the improvement of imaging quality of SASs. This paper proposes a time delay estimation method using joint-sub-band phase unwrapping, which achieves much higher estimation accuracy than the reference method. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method dramatically improves the SAS imaging quality, compared to the reference method.

RefineFace: Refinement Neural Network for High Performance Face Detection

Face detection has achieved significant progress in recent years. However, high performance face detection still remains a very challenging problem, especially when there exists many tiny faces. In this paper, we present a single-shot refinement face detector namely RefineFace to achieve high performance. Specifically, it consists of five modules: selective two-step regression (STR), selective two-step classification (STC), scale-aware margin loss (SML), feature supervision module (FSM) and receptive field enhancement (RFE). To enhance the regression ability for high location accuracy, STR coarsely adjusts locations and sizes of anchors from high level detection layers to provide better initialization for subsequent regressor. To improve the classification ability for high recall efficiency, STC first filters out most simple negatives from low level detection layers to reduce search space for subsequent classifier, then SML is applied to better distinguish faces from background at various scales and FSM is introduced to let the backbone learn more discriminative features for classification. Besides, RFE is presented to provide more diverse receptive field to better capture faces in some extreme poses. Extensive experiments conducted on WIDER FACE, AFW, PASCAL Face, FDDB, MAFA demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art results and runs at 37.3 FPS with ResNet-18 for VGA-resolution images.

Strigolactones positively regulate abscisic acid-dependent heat and cold tolerance in tomato

Strigolactones are carotenoid-derived phytohormones that impact plant growth and development in diverse ways. However, the roles of strigolactones in the responses to temperature stresses are largely unknown. Here, we demonstrated that strigolactone biosynthesis is induced in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) by heat and cold stresses. Compromised strigolactone biosynthesis or signaling negatively affected heat and cold tolerance, while application of the synthetic strigolactone analog GR245DS enhanced heat and cold tolerance. Strigolactone-mediated heat and cold tolerance was associated with the induction of abscisic acid (ABA), heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) accumulation, C-REPEAT BINDING FACTOR 1 (CBF1) transcription, and antioxidant enzyme activity. Importantly, a deficiency in ABA biosynthesis compromised the GR245DS effects on heat and cold stresses and abolished the GR245DS-induced transcription of HSP70, CBF1, and antioxidant-related genes. These results support that strigolactones positively regulate tomato heat and cold tolerance and that they do so at least partially by the induction of CBFs and HSPs and the antioxidant response in an ABA-dependent manner.

Environmental impacts of functional fillers in polylactide (PLA)-based bottles using life cycle assessment methodology

The use of functional fillers added to PLA-based products can be beneficial in terms of cost reduction and properties improvement. The existing life cycle assessment of PLA containers mainly focuses on the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission of PLA material model without fillers, and overlooked environmental impacts of functional fillers and the significant environmental problem-shifting on other indicators. This paper presents a life cycle assessment (LCA) of cooking oil bottles made from PLA, PLA/Fibers and PLA/CaCO₃ considering a wide spectrum impacts, and compares the environmental profile of them based on normalization and weighting analysis. The functional unit was set at 1000 bottles of 900 mL. The system boundary is from cradle to gate, including PLA-based particles production, bottle processing and transportation. The results showed that the contribution of the primary energy demand (PED) index of PLA-based bottles accounted for 159% to 192% of the global warming potential (GWP) index, which may be overlooked in previous studies. Compared to PLA and PLA/Fibers bottles, PLA/CaCO₃ bottles have lower environmental impacts in most categories and the lowest integrated impact index. In terms of PLA/CaCO₃ bottles, PLA particles and electricity contributed the most to energy conservation and emission reduction (ECER) results, accounting for 63.09% and 28.26% to the integrated impacts index, respectively. The results imply that the use of fillers in PLA bottles tends to reduce the environmental impacts, especially calcium carbonate can efficiently minimize environmental impacts of PLA-based bottles. And PED, SO₂ and NO_X indicators ranking above CO₂ should be taken into consideration to avoid the environmental problem-shifting, which can provide valuable reference for the creation of the method of making biodegradable plastic and carbon neutral policies.

Fast compressive beamforming with a modified fast iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm

Compressive beamforming has been successfully applied to direction-of-arrival estimation with sensor arrays. The results demonstrated that this technique achieves superior performance when compared with traditional high-resolution beamforming methods. The existing compressive beamforming methods use classical iterative optimization algorithms in their compressive sensing theories. However, the computational complexity of the existing compressive beamforming methods tend to be excessively high, which has limited the use of compressive beamforming in applications with limited computing resources. To address this issue, this paper proposes a fast compressive beamforming method which combines the shift-invariance of the array beam patterns with a fast iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm. The evaluation shows that the proposed fast compressive beamforming method successfully reduces the number of floating-point operations by 3 orders of magnitude when compared with the existing methods. In addition, both the simulations and experiments demonstrate that the resolution limit for discerning closely spaced sources of the introduced fast method is comparable to those of the existing compressive beamforming methods, which use classical iterative optimization algorithms.
