Cooperative Self-Assembly Process Involving Giant Toroidal Polyoxometalate as a Membrane Building Block in Nanoscale Vesicles

The self-assembly of organic amphiphilic species into various aggregates such as spherical or elongated micelles and cylinders up to the formation of lyotropic hexagonal or lamellar phases results from cooperative processes orchestrated by the hydrophobic effect, while those involving ionic inorganic polynuclear entities and nonionic organic components are still intriguing. Herein, we report on the supramolecular behavior of giant toroidal molybdenum blue-type polyoxometalate, namely, the {Mo154} species in the presence of n-octyl-β-glucoside (C8G1), widely used as a surfactant in biochemistry. Structural investigations were carried out using a set of complementary multiscale methods including single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis supported by molecular modeling, small-angle X-ray scattering and cryo-TEM observations. In addition, liquid NMR, viscosimetry, surface tension measurement, and isothermal titration calorimetry provided further information to decipher the complex aggregation pathway. Elucidation of the assembly process reveals a rich scenario where the presence of the large {Mo154} anion disrupts the self-assembly of the C8G1, well-known to produce micelles, and induces striking successive phase transitions from fluid-to-gel and from gel-to-fluid. Herein, intimate organic-inorganic primary interactions arising from the superchaotropic nature of the {Mo154} lead to versatile nanoscopic hybrid C8G1-{Mo154} aggregates including crystalline discrete assemblies, smectic lamellar liquid crystals, and large uni- or multilamellar vesicles where the large torus {Mo154} acts a trans-membrane component.

Switchable Redox and Thermo-Responsive Supramolecular Polymers Based on Cyclodextrin-Polyoxometalate Tandem

Supramolecular polymers built from stimuli-responsive host-guest interactions represent an attractive way of tailoring smart materials. Herein, we exploit the chaotropic effect of polyoxometalates and related host-guest properties to design unconventional polymer systems with reversible redox and thermo-responsive sol-gel transition. These supramolecular networks result from the association of cyclodextrin-based oligomers and Keggin-type POMs acting as electro-active crosslinking agents. The structure and the dynamics of such self-assembly systems have been investigated using a multiscale approach involving MALDI-TOF, viscosity measurements, cyclic voltammetry, 1 H-NMR (1D and DOSY), and Small-Angle X-ray Scattering. Our results reveal that the chaotropic effect corresponds to a powerful and efficient force that can be used to induce responsiveness in hybrid supramolecular oligomeric systems.

Clustering Six Electrons within "Dawson-Like" Polyoxometalate: An Open Route toward Its Post-functionalization

Super-reduction of polyoxometalates (POMs) in solution is of fundamental interest for designing innovative energy storage systems. In this article, we show that the "Dawson-like" POM can undergo a disproportionation process during its massive electron uptake, leading to species containing three metal-metal bonds as evidenced by X-ray diffraction, multi-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1 H and 183 W NMR), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), UV/Vis, and voltammetry techniques. This result indicates that electron storing within metal-metal bonds is not a unique property of Keggin-type POM as postulated since the 70s. Besides, we demonstrate that the presence of an electron-rich triad in the "Dawson-like" POM allows its post-functionalization with additional tungstate ions, generating a chiral molecule that is also the largest WIV -containing POMs known to date.

NMR spectroscopy to study cyclodextrin-based host-guest assemblies with polynuclear clusters

Natural cyclodextrin (CD) macrocycles are known to form diverse inclusion complexes with a wide variety of organic molecules, but recent work has revealed that inorganic clusters also form multicomponent supramolecular complexes and edifices. Such molecular assemblies exhibit a high degree of organization in solution governed by various chemical processes including molecular recognition, host-guest attraction, hydrophobic repulsion, or chaotropic effect. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the most efficient and practical analytical techniques to characterize the nature, the strength and the mechanism of these interactions in solution. This review provides a brief overview on recent examples of the contribution of NMR to the characterization of hybrid systems in solution based on CD with polynuclear clusters, including polyoxometalates (POMs), metallic clusters and hydroborate clusters. The focus will be first on using 1H (and 13C) NMR of the host, i.e., CD, to identify the nature of the interactions and measure their strength. Then, 2D NMR methods will be illustrated by DOSY as a means of highlighting the clustering phenomena, and by NOESY/ROESY to evidence the spatial proximity and contact within the supramolecular assemblies. Finally, other NMR nuclei will be selected to probe the inorganic part as a guest molecule. Attention will be paid to classical host-guest complexes Cluster@CD, but also to hierarchical multi-scale, multi-component assemblies such as Cluster@CD@Cluster.

Photoinduced electron transfer between a noble-metal-free [Mo6I8Cl6]2- cluster and polyoxometalates

Evidence for photoinduced intermolecular electron transfer from the excited state of the [Mo6I8Cl6]2- electron-rich cluster to polyoxometalates (POMs) is reported. We demonstrate that the global charge density of POMs affects the efficiency of electron transfer. This work paves the way for the rational design of photocatalytic systems using cluster-based complexes as robust noble-metal-free photosensitizers.

Making Heterometallic Metal-Metal Bonds in Keggin-Type Polyoxometalates by a Six-Electron Reduction Process

Polyoxometalates (POMs) represent a promising class of molecular electron reservoirs. However, their multielectron reduction gives rise to intricate physical-chemical phenomena that must be fully understood for their future use in energy-storage devices. Herein, we show that bulk electrolysis of the archetypal Keggin-type POM [Si(W^VI₂Mo^VIO₁₀)(W^VI₃O₁₀)₃]^4- in aqueous solution leads to the six-electron-reduced derivative [Si(W^IV₂Mo^IVO₇(H₂O)₃)(W^VI₃O₁₀)₃]^4- (notated SiW₁₁Mo-VI') in which the mixed-metal triad acts as a storage unit for six electrons and six protons. X-ray diffraction analysis and multinuclear NMR (¹⁸³W and ⁹⁵Mo) studies reveal that this electron-rich species represents the first example of POMs containing heterometallic metal-metal bonds between addenda centers. This electron-rich POM can be further reduced through multielectronic events, while its full oxidation restores the structure of the oxidized parent ion. Remarkably, the formation of SiW₁₁Mo-VI' results from a fast clustering process compared to that observed for the entirely W-based analogue, revealing that the formation of metal-metal bonds in the mixed-metal Mo/W POM is facilitated because the reaction rate is not limited by a slow disproportionation step. Last, we evaluate the supramolecular properties of SiW₁₁Mo-VI' using a method based on the cloud-point measurement of a nonionic surfactant. This investigation demonstrates that the clustering process has dramatic consequences on the solution behavior of the POM, canceling its superchaotropic character due to a local structuring effect of the hydration shell. These fundamental results pave the way for applications using the massive electron-storage properties of mixed-metal POMs.

Gigantic supramolecular assemblies built from dynamic hierarchical organization between inorganic nanospheres and porphyrins

Noncovalent ionic interactions between nanosized Keplerate-type capsules {Mo₁₃₂} and tetra-cationic porphyrins have been investigated in aqueous solution using small-angle X-ray scattering, ¹H NMR and photophysical methods. These complementary multiscale methods reveal the formation of large hybrid oligomers built from a short-range organization in which the cationic porphyrin is glued onto the large POM surface. The local structuring appears to be strongly dependent on the dye : {Mo₁₃₂} ratio changing the morphology of the oligomers from linear to dense aggregates.

Stabilization of Octahedral Metal Halide Clusters by Host-Guest Complexation with γ-Cyclodextrin: Toward Nontoxic Luminescent Compounds

γ-Cyclodextrin (γ-CD) interacts in aqueous solution with octahedral halide clusters Na₂[{M₆X₈}Cl₆] (M = Mo, W; X = Br, I) to form robust inclusion supramolecular complexes [{M₆X₈}Cl₆@2γ-CD]^2-. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed two conformational organizations within the adduct depending on the nature of the inner halide X within the {M₆X₈} core. Using ³⁵Cl NMR and UV-vis as complementary techniques, the kinetics of the hydrolysis process were shown to increase with the following order: {W₆I₈} < {W₆Br₈} ≈ {Mo₆I₈} < {Mo₆Br₈}. The complexation with γ-CD drastically enhances the hydrolytic stability of luminescent [{M₆X₈}Cl₆]^2- cluster-based units, which was quantitatively proved by the same techniques. The resulting host-guest complexation provides a protective shell against contact with water and offers promising horizons for octahedral clusters in biology as revealed by the low dark cytotoxicity and cellular uptake.

Revisiting the Three Vanadium Sandwich-Type Polyoxometalates: Structures, Solution Behavior, and Redox Properties

It is well known that the trivacant anions α-B-[XW₉O₃₃]^9- react with vanadyl ions to give the sandwich-type polyoxometalates [(V^IVO)₃(XW₉O₃₃)₂]^12- with X = As^III or Sb^III. Nevertheless, the oxidized derivatives have been obtained selectively by electrochemical oxidation from the fully reduced derivatives [(V^IVO)₃(XW₉O₃₃)₂]^12- allowing full characterization both in solution using UV-vis and multinuclear (¹⁷O, ⁵¹V, and ¹⁸³W) NMR spectroscopies and in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural analysis of the oxidized [(V^VO)₃(XW₉O₃₃)₂]^9- polyanions is consistent with the idealized D_3h symmetry, while solution studies reveal a fair hydrolytic stability in a wide pH range from 0 to 6. Besides, the D_3h polyanions either as reduced or oxidized forms [(VO)₃(AsW₉O₃₃)₂]^9/12- have been identified as the thermodynamic product that results from the conversion of the C_2v polyanion [(H₂O)(VO)₃(AsW₉O₃₃)₂]^9/12- through moderate heating. Conversely, the Sb^III-containing derivative gives exclusively the D_3h polyanion, probably either due to the extended lone pair of the trigonal Sb^III heterogroup that prevents the formation of the C_2v arrangement or the lability of the oxo-metalate bonds that favor chemical exchange. The electrochemical studies of sandwich-type polyoxometalates revealed that each {V═O} group gives rise to a one-electron transfer process. At last, the redox properties appear strongly altered in the 0.3-5 pH range, consistent with proton-coupled electron transfers.

Chaotropic Effect as an Assembly Motif to Construct Supramolecular Cyclodextrin-Polyoxometalate-Based Frameworks

In aqueous solution, low-charged polyoxometalates (POMs) exhibit remarkable self-assembly properties with nonionic organic matter that have been recently used to develop groundbreaking advances in host-guest chemistry, as well as in soft matter science. Herein, we exploit the affinity between a chaotropic POM and native cyclodextrins (α-, β-, and γ-CD) to enhance the structural and functional diversity of cyclodextrin-based open frameworks. First, we reveal that the Anderson-Evans type polyoxometalate [AlMo₆O₁₈(OH)₆]^3- represents an efficient inorganic scaffold to design open hybrid frameworks built from infinite cyclodextrin channels connected through the disk-shaped POM. A single-crystal X-ray analysis demonstrates that the resulting supramolecular architectures contain large cavities (up to 2 nm) where the topologies are dictated by the rotational symmetry of the organic macrocycle, generating honeycomb (bnn net) and checkerboard-like (pcu net) networks for α-CD (C₆) and γ-CD (C₈), respectively. On the other hand, the use of β-CD, a macrocycle with C₇ ideal symmetry, led to a distorted-checkerboard-like network. The cyclodextrin-based frameworks built from an Anderson-Evans type POM are easily functionalizable using the molecular recognition properties of the macrocycle building units. As a proof of concept, we successfully isolated a series of compartmentalized functional frameworks by the entrapment of polyiodides or superchaotropic redox-active polyanions within the macrocyclic host matrix. This set of results paves the way for designing multifunctional supramolecular frameworks whose pore dimensions are controlled by the size of inorganic entities.

Improvement of the Hydrolytic Stability of the Keggin Molybdo- and Tungsto-Phosphate Anions by Cyclodextrins

Keggin-type molybdo- and tungsto-phosphate polyoxoanions are among the most popular polyoxometalates (POMs) but suffer from their limited stability at low pH in aqueous solution. Their superchaotropic properties generate strong supramolecular complexes with cyclodextrins (CDs), which significantly affect the hydrolytic stability of POM. This chaotropically driven stabilization effect was systematically monitored by ³¹P NMR spectroscopy covering a wide range of pH (from 0 to 8) and varying the nature of the CD (α-, β-, and γ-form). A shift of ca. two pH units of the stability domains of these POMs was found in the presence of two equivalents of γ-CD compared to pure water, leading to keep intact the PW₁₂O₄₀^3- anion without any decomposition up to pH 3.5 (versus 1.5 in pure water) and pH 2.5 for PMo₁₂O₄₀^3-, which begins to decompose even at pH 0 in pure water. The effect of the smaller CDs (α- and β-form) is much less pronounced (only 0.5 pH units shift of the stability domain) confirming the importance of host-guest size matching to form a sandwich-type inclusion complex and thus protect the POM structure against basic hydrolysis. Such complexation was further supported by ¹⁸³W and ¹H NMR spectroscopy. Finally, using quantitative ³¹P NMR analyses, the new speciation and formation constants of phospho-molybdates and phospho-tungstates in the presence of cyclodextrins are determined and compared to those previously reported in pure water or in the 50:50 water/1,4-dioxane mixture.

Time-Resolved Spectroscopy and High-Efficiency Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution of a {Mo3 S4 }-Containing Polyoxometalate-Based System

Polyoxothiometalate ions (ThioPOM) are active hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) catalysts based on modular assembly built from electrophilic clusters {MoS_x } and vacant polyoxotungstates. Herein, the dumbbell-like anion [{(PW₁₁ O₃₉ )Mo₃ S₄ (H₂ O)₃ (OH)}₂ ]^8- exhibits very high light-driven HER activity, while the active cores {Mo₃ S₄ } do not contain any exposed disulfido ligands, which were suspected to be the origin of the HER activity. Moreover, in the catalyst architecture, the two central {Mo₃ S₄ } cores are sandwiched by two {PW₁₁ O₃₉ }^7- subunits that act as oxidant-resistant protecting groups and behave as electron-collecting units. A detailed photophysical study was carried out confirming the reductive quenching mechanism of the photosensitizer [Ir(ppy)₂ (dtbbpy)]⁺ by the sacrificial donor triethanolamine (TEOA) and highlighting the very high rate constant of the electron transfer from the reduced photosensitizer to the ThioPOM catalyst. Such results provide new insights into the field of molecular catalytic systems able to promote high HER activity.

Discovery of a Neutral 40-PdII-Oxo Molecular Disk, [Pd40O24(OH)16{(CH3)2AsO2}16]: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and Catalytic Studies

We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of a giant, discrete, and neutral molecular disk, [Pd₄₀O₂₄(OH)₁₆{(CH₃)₂AsO₂}₁₆] (Pd₄₀), comprising a 40-palladium-oxo core that is capped by 16 dimethylarsinate moieties, resulting in a palladium-oxo cluster (POC) with a diameter of ∼2 nm. Pd₄₀, which is the largest known neutral Pd-based oxo cluster, can be isolated either as a discrete species or constituting a 3D H-bonded organic-inorganic framework (HOIF) with a 12-tungstate Keggin ion, [SiW₁₂O₄₀]^4- or [GeW₁₂O₄₀]^4-. ¹H and ¹³C NMR as well as ¹H-DOSY NMR studies indicate that Pd₄₀ is stable in aqueous solution, which is also confirmed by ESI-MS studies. Pd₄₀ was also immobilized on a mesoporous support (SBA15) followed by the generation of size-controlled Pd nanoparticles (diameter ∼2-6 nm, as based on HR-TEM), leading to an effective heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst for the transformation of various arenes to saturated carbocycles.

Host-Guest Complexation Between Cyclodextrins and Hybrid Hexavanadates: What are the Driving Forces?

Host-guest complexes between native cyclodextrins (α-, β- and γ-CD) and hybrid Lindqvist-type polyoxovanadates (POVs) [V₆ O₁₃ ((OCH₂ )₃ C-R)₂ ]^2- with R = CH₂ CH₃ , NO₂ , CH₂ OH and NH(BOC) (BOC = N-tert-butoxycarbonyl) were studied in aqueous solution. Six crystal structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the nature of the functional R group strongly influences the host-guest conformation and also the crystal packing. In all systems isolated in the solid-state, the organic groups R are embedded within the cyclodextrin cavities, involving only a few weak supramolecular contacts. The interaction between hybrid POVs and the macrocyclic organic hosts have been deeply studied in solution using ITC, cyclic voltammetry and NMR methods (1D ¹ H NMR, and 2D DOSY, and ROESY). This set of complementary techniques provides clear insights about the strength of interactions and the binding host-guest modes occurring in aqueous solution, highlighting a dramatic influence of the functional group R on the supramolecular properties of the hexavanadate polyoxoanions (association constant K_1:1 vary from 0 to 2 000 M^-1 ) while isolated functional organic groups exhibit only very weak intrinsic affinity with CDs. Electrochemical and calorimetric investigations suggest that the driving force of the host-guest association involving larger CDs (β- and γ-CD) is mainly related to the chaotropic effect. In contrast, the hydrophobic effect supported by weak attractive forces appears as the main contributor for the formation of α-CD-containing host-guest complexes. In any cases, the origin of driving forces is clearly related to the ability of the macrocyclic host to desolvate the exposed moieties of the hybrid POVs.

Supramolecular Association between γ-Cyclodextrin and Preyssler-Type Polyoxotungstate

The development of hybrid materials based on polyoxometalates constitutes a strategy for the design of multifunctional materials. The slow evaporation of an aqueous solution of [NaP₅W₃₀O₁₁₀]¹⁴⁻ in the presence of γ-Cyclodextrin (γ-CD) led to the crystallization of a K₆Na₈{[NaP₅W₃₀O₁₁₀]•(C₄₈H₈₀O₄₀)}•23H₂O (NaP₅W₃₀•1CD) supramolecular compound, which was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR-spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and elemental analyses. Structural analysis revealed the formation of 1:1 {[NaP₅W₃₀O₁₁₀]•[γ-CD]}¹⁴⁻ adduct in the solid state. Studies in solution by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, ¹H NMR spectroscopy, and ³¹P DOSY, have demonstrated weak interactions between the inorganic anion and the macrocyclic organic molecule.

Redox-Responsive Host-Guest Association between γ-Cyclodextrin and Mixed-Metal Keggin-Type Polyoxometalates

The complexation of Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs) with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) leads to supramolecular inclusion assemblies in aqueous solution driven by a chaotropic effect. The strength of the interaction between γ-CD and oxidized or one-electron reduced POMs in a series of molybdenum and vanadium monosubstituted phospho- and silico-tungstates, [XW₁₁MO₄₀]^n- Keggin-type anions where X = P or Si and M = Mo^V/VI or V^IV/V, has been evaluated by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), NMR spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. Such a study reveals that the host-guest binding constant K_1:1 increases strongly with the decrease of the global ionic charge of the POM unit. There is an almost one magnitude order of variation in K_1:1 per charge unit, where K_1:1 falls down from about 10⁵ M^-1 to values close to zero as ionic charge varies from 3- to 6-. Such POMs with molybdenum and vanadium addenda offer the possibility of tuning the host-guest association strength by the simple addition/removal of one electron to POMs, opening a new avenue for the design of smart materials through redox stimuli.

"Host in Host" Supramolecular Core-Shell Type Systems Based on Giant Ring-Shaped Polyoxometalates

Herein, we show how the chaotropic effect arising from reduced molybdate ions in acidified aqueous solution is able to amplify drastically weak supramolecular interactions. Time-resolved Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) analysis suggests that molybdenum-blue oligomeric species form huge aggregates in the presence of γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) which results in the fast formation of nanoscopic {Mo₁₅₄ }-based host-guest species, while X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the ending-point of the scenario results in an unprecedented three-component well-ordered core-shell-like motif. A similar arrangement was found by using preformed hexarhenium chalcogenide-type cluster [Re₆ Te₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- as exogenous guest. This seminal work brings better understanding of the self-assembly processes in general and gives new opportunities for practical applications in the design of complex multicomponent materials via the simplicity of the non-covalent chemistry.

Discovery and Supramolecular Interactions of Neutral Palladium-Oxo Clusters Pd16 and Pd24

We report on the synthesis, structure, and physicochemical characterization of the first three examples of neutral palladium-oxo clusters (POCs). The 16-palladium(II)-oxo cluster [Pd16 O24 (OH)8 ((CH3 )2 As)8 ] (Pd16 ) comprises a cyclic palladium-oxo unit capped by eight dimethylarsinate groups. The chloro-derivative [Pd16 Na2 O26 (OH)3  Cl3  ((CH3 )2  As)8 ] (Pd16 Cl) was also prepared, which forms a highly stable 3D supramolecular lattice via strong intermolecular interactions. The 24-palladium(II)-oxo cluster [Pd24 O44 (OH)8 ((CH3 )2 As)16 ] (Pd24 ) can be considered as a bicapped derivative of Pd16 with a tetra-palladium-oxo unit grafted on either side. The three compounds were fully characterized 1) in the solid state by single-crystal and powder XRD, IR, TGA, and solid-state 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy, 2) in solution by 1 H, 13 C NMR and 1 H DOSY spectroscopic methods, and 3) in the gas phase by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS).

Hofmeister effect in the Keggin-type polyoxotungstate series

The chaotropic character of Keggin-type polyoxotungstate anions was evaluated with respect to their ability to bind to γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) by varying the global charge density of the nanometer-sized polyanion.

Cyclodextrin-Assisted Hierarchical Aggregation of Dawson-type Polyoxometalate in the Presence of {Re6Se8} Based Clusters

The association of metallic clusters (CLUS) and polyoxometalates (POM) into hierarchical architectures is achieved using γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) as a supramolecular connector. The new self-assembled systems, so-called CLUSPOM, are formed from Dawson-type polyoxometalate [P₂W₁₈O₆₂]^6- and electron-rich rhenium clusters. It is worth noting that a cluster-based cation [{Re₆Se₈}(H₂O)₆]²⁺ on one hand and a cluster-based anion on the other hand [{Re₆Se₈}(CN)₆]^4- can be associated with the anionic POM. In the absence of the supramolecular connector, a "CLUSPOM salt" was obtained from aqueous solution of the cationic cluster and the polyoxometalate. In this solid, the arrangement between the polymetallic building blocks is mainly governed by long-range Coulombic interactions. In the presence of γ-CD, the Dawson anion and the cationic cluster are assembled differently, forming a hierarchical supramolecular solid, K₂[{Re₆Se₈}(H₂O)₆]₂{[P₂W₁₈O₆₂]@2γ-CD}·42H₂O, where the organic macrocycle acts as a ditopic linker between the inorganic building blocks. In such an edifice, the short-range molecular recognition dominates the long-range Coulombic interactions leading to a specific three-dimensional organization. Interestingly, the assembling of anionic POM [P₂W₁₈O₆₂]^6- with the anionic rhenium cluster [{Re₆Se₈}(CN)₆]^4- is also achieved with γ-CD despite the repulsive forces between the nanosized anions. The resulting solid, K₁₀{[{Re₆Se₈}(CN)₆]@2γ-CD}[P₂W₁₈O₆₂]·33H₂O, is built from 1:2 inclusion complexes {[{Re₆Se₈}(CN)₆]@2γ-CD}^4- linked by a POM unit interacting with the exterior wall of the organic macrocycle. Multinuclear NMR and small-angle X-ray scattering investigations support supramolecular preorganization in aqueous solution prior to crystallization.

From Specific γ-CD/[Nb6 Cl12 (H2 O)6 ]2+ Recognition to Biological Activity Tuning

Specific molecular recognition of γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) by the cationic hexanuclear niobium [Nb₆ Cl₁₂ (H₂ O)₆ ]²⁺ cluster complex in aqueous solutions results in a 1:1 supramolecular assembly {[Nb₆ Cl₁₂ (H₂ O)₆ ]@γ-CD}²⁺ . NMR spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and ESI-MS were used to study the interaction between the inorganic cluster and the organic macrocycle. Such molecular association affects the biological activity of [Nb₆ Cl₁₂ (H₂ O)₆ ]²⁺ , decreasing its cytotoxicity despite enhanced cellular uptake. The 1:1 stoichiometry is maintained in solution over a large window of the reagents' ratio, but crystallization by slow evaporation produces a 1:2 host-guest complex [Nb₆ Cl₁₂ (H₂ O)₆ @(γ-CD)₂ ]Cl₂ ⋅20 H₂ O featuring the cluster encapsulated between two molecules of γ-CD. The 1:2 complex was characterized by XRD, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Quantum chemical calculations were performed to model host-guest interaction.

Unprecedented coupling reaction between two anionic species of a closo-decahydrodecaborate cluster and an Anderson-type polyoxometalate

A novel decahydrodecaborate-functionalized Anderson type polyoxometalate has been synthesized and characterized in solution by ESI-MS, various NMR techniques and electrochemical methods. DFT studies provide strong support to understand the properties of this hybrid system.

Socioeconomic inequalities in cognitive performance among early ageing people: The Constances cohort

Background

In spite of the recent awareness of environmental characteristic’s impact on brain aging, links between contextual socioeconomic status and cognitive performance (CP) remains unclear. The objective was to investigate the influence of individual and contextual deprivation on cognitive performance in order to better characterize vulnerable population.

Methods

We performed cross-sectional analyses on 44,762 participants (45-70 y) of the French Constances cohort. Cognitive performance was assessed using a global cognitive score calculated with 6 cognitive tests evaluating global cognitive function, episodic verbal memory, language abilities, and executive functions. Poor performance was defined as a score below or equal to the 25th percentile of the distribution. We approached the deprivation by two validated multidimensional index: at individual level with the EPICES score (deprived if &lt; 30.17) and contextual level with the FDep09 score divided in quintile (Q5 being the most deprived). Associations were estimated with multilevel logistic regressions.

Results

At the individual level, participants more deprived had poorer CP independently to sex, age, education and health status (OR 1.58 [1.48; 1.69]). At the contextual level, the more people lived in deprived environment, the poorer their CP (p&lt;.0001), even after adjustment on individual deprivation and other individual characteristics (Q5 vs Q1: OR 1.28 [1.15; 1.41]).

Conclusions

In this large cohort of early-ageing people, area-based disparities in cognitive impairment were highlighted. A better understanding of the influence of living environment deprivation level on cognitive aging could help to define new strategies in prevention by targeting at-risk populations in interventions studies in order to reduce social health inequalities.

Key messages

Our study evidenced a strong socio-economic gradient of cognitive performance identifiable on both individual and contextual level, in a large sample of middle-aged volunteers. Independently to individual deprivation and other individual characteristics, living in a deprived environment may be detrimental to the brain health.

Anthropic impacts on Sub-Saharan urban water resources through their pharmaceutical contamination (Yaoundé, Center Region, Cameroon)

Sub-Saharan urban centers have to tackle high population growth, lack of sanitation infrastructures and the need for good quality water resources. To characterize the impacts of anthropization on the water resources of the capital of Cameroon (Yaoundé), a multi-disciplinary approach was used in ten sub-watersheds (peri-urban and urban) of the Méfou watershed. Pharmaceutical residues were used as tracers of surface and groundwater contamination caused by the release of domestic wastewater from pit latrines and landfills. A water use survey was conducted in the vicinity of the sampling sites to better assess water use, treatment and management. Available land use and hydro-geomorphological data completed characterization of the sub-watersheds. The combined data showed that natural features (elevation, slope, and hydrography) and human activities (land use) favor rainfall-runoff events and hence surface water contamination. Pharmaceutical monitoring revealed contamination of both surface and groundwater especially in the urban sub-watersheds. Analgesics/anti-inflammatory drugs and anti-epileptic carbamazepine were the most frequently found compounds (in up to 91% of water samples) with concentrations of acetaminophen reaching 5660 ng/L. In urban sub-watersheds, 50% of the groundwater sites used for drinking water were contaminated by diclofenac (476-518 ng/L), carbamazepine (263-335 ng/L), ibuprofen (141-276 ng/L), sulfamethoxazole (<2-1285 ng/L) and acetaminophen (110-111 ng/L), emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of the interactions between surface and groundwater. The use of groundwater as drinking water by 68% of the total population surveyed raises concerns about population exposure and potential health risks. This case study highlights the need for strategies to limit contamination of the water resource given the predicted future expansion of Sub-Saharan urban centers.

Polyoxothiometalate-Derivatized Silicon Photocathodes for Sunlight-Driven Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Silicon photocathodes coated with drop-casted {Mo₃S₄}-based polyoxothiometalate assemblies are demonstrated to be effective for sunlight-driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acid conditions. These photocathodes are catalytically more efficient than that coated with the parent thiomolybdate incorporating an organic ligand, as supported by a higher onset potential and a lower overvoltage at 10 mA cm^-2. At pH 7.3, the trend is inversed and the beneficial effect of the polyoxometalate for the HER is not observed. Moreover, the polyoxothiometalate-modified photocathode is found to be also more stable under acid conditions and can be operated at the light-limited catalytic current for more than 40 h. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy measurements indicate that the cathodic polarization of both photocathodes leads to the release of a large amount of the deposited material into the electrolyte solution concomitantly with the formation of mixed valence species {Mo(IV)_3-x Mo(III) _x O_4-n S _n }^(4-x)+ resulting from the replacement of S^2- sulfido ligands in the cluster by oxo O^2- groups; these combined effects are shown to be beneficial for the photoelectrocatalysis.

Host-Guest Binding Hierarchy within Redox- and Luminescence-Responsive Supramolecular Self-Assembly Based on Chalcogenide Clusters and γ-Cyclodextrin

Water-soluble salts of anionic [Re₆ Q₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- (Q=S, Se, Te) chalcogenide octahedral rhenium clusters react with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) producing a new type of inclusion compounds. Crystal structures determined through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed supramolecular host-guest assemblies resulting from close encapsulations of the octahedral cluster within two γ-CDs. Interestingly, nature of the inner Q ligands influences strongly the host-guest conformation. The cluster [Re₆ S₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- interacts preferentially with the primary faces of the γ-CD while the bulkier clusters [Re₆ Se₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- and [Re₆ Te₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- exhibit specific interactions with the secondary faces of the cyclic host. Furthermore, analysis of the crystal packing reveals additional supramolecular interactions that lead to 2D infinite arrangements with [Re₆ S₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- or to 1D "bamboo-like" columns with [Re₆ Se₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- and [Re₆ Te₈ (CN)₆ ]^4- species. Solution studies, using multinuclear NMR methods, ESI-MS and Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) corroborates nicely the solid-state investigations showing that supramolecular pre-organization is retained in aqueous solution even in diluted conditions. Furthermore, ITC analysis showed that host-guest stability increases significantly ongoing from S to Te. At last, we report herein that deep inclusion alters significantly the intrinsic physical-chemical properties of the octahedral clusters, allowing redox tuning and near IR luminescence enhancement.

pH-Controlled One Pot Syntheses of Giant Mo2O2S2-Containing Seleno-Tungstate Architectures

Self-assembly reactions of Na₂WO₄, SeO₂/SeO₃^2-, and [Mo₂O₂(μ-S)₂(H₂O)₆]²⁺ give, depending on the pH value, two new large polyoxometalate complexes: i.e., [(γ-Se₂W₁₄O₅₂)₃(Mo₂O₂(μ-S)₂(H₂O)₂)₆]^24- (1) isolated at pH 3.5 and [(γ-Se₂W₁₄O₅₂)₄(WO₃(H₂O))₈(W₂O₅)₂(W₄O₁₂)₂(Mo₂O₂(μ-S)₂(H₂O)₂)₄(Mo₂O₂(μ-S)₂(SeO₃))₄]^36- (2) isolated at pH 2. Both compounds were characterized in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, EDX, elemental analysis, TGA, and FT-IR and in solution by ESI-MS and NMR.

Exothermal effects in the thermal decomposition of [IrCl6]2−-containing salts with [M(NH3)5Cl]2+ cations: [M(NH3)5Cl][IrCl6] (M = Co, Cr, Ru, Rh, Ir)

[M(NH₃)₅Cl][IrCl₆], M = Co, Cr, Ru, Rh, and Ir, were proposed as single-source precursors for bimetallic alloys. Upon heating, compounds show endothermic effect which can be corresponded with Ir(iv) reduction and ligand exchange.

High-field 95 Mo and 183 W static and MAS NMR study of polyoxometalates

The potential of high-field NMR to measure solid-state ⁹⁵ Mo and ¹⁸³ W NMR in polyoxometalates (POMs) is explored using some archetypical structures like Lindqvist, Keggin and Dawson as model compounds that are well characterized in solution. NMR spectra in static and under magic angle spinning (MAS) were obtained, and their analysis allowed extraction of the NMR parameters, including chemical shift anisotropy and quadrupolar coupling parameters. Despite the inherent difficulties of measurement in solid state of these low-gamma NMR nuclei, due mainly to the low spectral resolution and poor signal-to-noise ratio, the observed global trends compare well with the solution-state NMR data. This would open an avenue for application of solid-state NMR to POMs, especially when liquid-state NMR is not possible, e.g., for poorly soluble or unstable compounds in solution, and for giant molecules with slow tumbling motion. Self-assembly of [PNbxW12−xO40]n− Keggin anions – a simple way to mixed Nb–W polyoxometalates
