Zr-Based MOF-545 Metal-Organic Framework Loaded with Highly Dispersed Small Size Ni Nanoparticles for CO2 Methanation

We report the use of Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) MOF-545 and MOF-545(Cu) as supports to prepare catalysts with uniformly and highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles (NPs) for CO2 hydrogenation into CH4. In the first step, we studied the MOF support under catalytic conditions using operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy, ex situ characterizations (PXRD, XPS, TEM, and EDX-element mapping), and DFT calculations. We showed that the high-temperature conditions undoubtedly confer a potential for catalytic functionality to the solids toward CH4 production, while no role of the Cu could be evidenced. The MOF was shown to be transformed into a catalytically active material, amorphized but still structured with dehydroxylated Zr-oxoclusters, in line with DFT calculations. In the second step, Ni@MOF-545 catalysts were prepared using either impregnation (IM) or double solvent (DS) methods, followed by a dry reduction (R) route under H2 to immobilize Ni NPs. The highest catalytic activity was obtained with the Ni@MOF-545 DS R catalyst (595 mmolCH4 gNi-1 h-1) with 100% CH4 selectivity and 60% CO2 conversion after ∼3 h. The higher catalytic activity of Ni@MOF-545 DS R is a result of much smaller (∼5 nm) and better dispersed Ni NPs than in the IM sample (20-40 nm), the latter exhibiting sintering. The advantages of the encapsulation of Ni NPs by the DS method and of the use of a MOF-545-based support are discussed, highlighting the interest of designing yet-unexplored Zr-based MOFs loaded with Ni NPs for CO2 hydrogenation.

Cooperative Self-Assembly Process Involving Giant Toroidal Polyoxometalate as a Membrane Building Block in Nanoscale Vesicles

The self-assembly of organic amphiphilic species into various aggregates such as spherical or elongated micelles and cylinders up to the formation of lyotropic hexagonal or lamellar phases results from cooperative processes orchestrated by the hydrophobic effect, while those involving ionic inorganic polynuclear entities and nonionic organic components are still intriguing. Herein, we report on the supramolecular behavior of giant toroidal molybdenum blue-type polyoxometalate, namely, the {Mo154} species in the presence of n-octyl-β-glucoside (C8G1), widely used as a surfactant in biochemistry. Structural investigations were carried out using a set of complementary multiscale methods including single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis supported by molecular modeling, small-angle X-ray scattering and cryo-TEM observations. In addition, liquid NMR, viscosimetry, surface tension measurement, and isothermal titration calorimetry provided further information to decipher the complex aggregation pathway. Elucidation of the assembly process reveals a rich scenario where the presence of the large {Mo154} anion disrupts the self-assembly of the C8G1, well-known to produce micelles, and induces striking successive phase transitions from fluid-to-gel and from gel-to-fluid. Herein, intimate organic-inorganic primary interactions arising from the superchaotropic nature of the {Mo154} lead to versatile nanoscopic hybrid C8G1-{Mo154} aggregates including crystalline discrete assemblies, smectic lamellar liquid crystals, and large uni- or multilamellar vesicles where the large torus {Mo154} acts a trans-membrane component.

Unravelling the Molecular Structure and Confining Environment of an Organometallic Catalyst Heterogenized within Amorphous Porous Polymers

The catalytic activity of multifunctional, microporous materials is directly linked to the spatial arrangement of their structural building blocks. Despite great achievements in the design and incorporation of isolated catalytically active metal complexes within such materials, a detailed understanding of their atomic-level structure and the local environment of the active species remains a fundamental challenge, especially when these latter are hosted in non-crystalline organic polymers. Here, we show that by combining computational chemistry with pair distribution function analysis, 129 Xe NMR, and Dynamic Nuclear Polarization enhanced NMR spectroscopy, a very accurate description of the molecular structure and confining surroundings of a catalytically active Rh-based organometallic complex incorporated inside the cavity of amorphous bipyridine-based porous polymers is obtained. Small, but significant, differences in the structural properties of the polymers are highlighted depending on their backbone motifs.

ZIF-8 thin films by a vapor-phase process: limits to growth

Metal-organic frameworks are a class of porous materials that show promising properties in the field of microelectronics. To reach industrial use of these materials, gas phase techniques are often preferred and were recently introduced. However, the thicknesses achieved are not sufficient, limiting further development. In this work, an improved gas phase process allowing ZIF-8 layer formation of several hundreds of nm using cyclic ligand/water exposures is described. Then, by a combination of in-depth surface analyses and molecular dynamics simulations, the presence and role of hydroxyl defects in the ZIF-8 layer to reach this thickness are established. At the same time, this study unveils an inherent limit of the method: thickness growth is consubstantial with defect repairing upon the crystallites ripening; such defect repairing eventually leads to the decrease of the pore window below the diffusion radius of the incoming linker, thus apparently capping the maximum MOF thickness observable for this type of material topology through this growth method.

Heterogenization of molecular cobalt catalysts in robust metal–organic frameworks for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Impact of Organic Templates on the Selective Formation of Zeolite Oligomers

Zeolites are essential materials to industry due to their adsorption and catalytic properties. The best current approach to prepare a targeted zeolite still relies on trial and error's synthetic procedures since a rational understanding of the impact of synthesis variables on the final structures is still missing. To discern the role of a variety of organic templates, we perform simulations of the early stages of condensation of silica oligomers by combining DFT, Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi relationships and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. We investigate an extended reaction path mechanism including 258 equilibrium reactions and 242 chemical species up to silica octamers, comparing the computed concentrations of Si oligomers with ²⁹ SI NMR experimental data. The effect of the templating agent is linked to the modification of the intramolecular H-bond network in the growing oligomer, which produces higher concentration of 4-membered ring intermediates, precursors of the key double-four ring building blocks present on more than 39 known zeolite topologies.

Heterogenisation of polyoxometalates and other metal-based complexes in metal–organic frameworks: from synthesis to characterisation and applications in catalysis

This review provides a thorough overview of composites with molecular catalysts (polyoxometalates, or organometallic or coordination complexes) immobilised into MOFs via non-covalent interactions.

Structure-directing role of immobilized polyoxometalates in the synthesis of porphyrinic Zr-based metal-organic frameworks

We evidence the structure-directing role of the PW12O403- polyoxometalate in porphyrinic MOF synthesis whereby it promotes the formation of the kinetic topology. Its immobilization into the MOF is successfully achieved at a high temperature yielding the kinetic MOF-525/PCN-224 phases, while prohibiting the formation of the thermodynamic MOF-545 product. A combined experimental/theoretical approach uses differential PDF and DFT calculations along with solid-state NMR to show the structural integrity of the POM and its location next to the Zr-based nodes.

Synthetic and computational assessment of a chiral metal-organic framework catalyst for predictive asymmetric transformation

Understanding and controlling molecular recognition mechanisms at a chiral solid interface is a continuously addressed challenge in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, the molecular recognition of a chiral peptide-functionalized metal–organic framework (MOF) catalyst towards a pro-chiral substrate is evaluated experimentally and in silico. The MIL-101 metal–organic framework is used as a macroligand for hosting a Noyori-type chiral ruthenium molecular catalyst, namely (benzene)Ru@MIL-101-NH-Gly-Pro. Its catalytic perfomance toward the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of acetophenone into R- and S-phenylethanol are assessed. The excellent match between the experimentally obtained enantiomeric excesses and the computational outcomes provides a robust atomic-level rationale for the observed product selectivities. The unprecedented role of the MOF in confining the molecular Ru-catalyst and in determining the access of the prochiral substrate to the active site is revealed in terms of highly face-specific host–guest interactions. The predicted surface-specific face differentiation of the prochiral substrate is experimentally corroborated since a three-fold increase in enantiomeric excess is obtained with the heterogeneous MOF-based catalyst when compared to its homogeneous molecular counterpart.

Co-immobilization of a Rh Catalyst and a Keggin Polyoxometalate in the UiO-67 Zr-Based Metal-Organic Framework: In Depth Structural Characterization and Photocatalytic Properties for CO2 Reduction

The Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) PW₁₂O₄₀^3- and the catalytic complex Cp*Rh(bpydc)Cl₂ (bpydc = 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid) were coimmobilized in the Zr(IV) based metal organic framework UiO-67. The POM is encapsulated within the cavities of the MOF by in situ synthesis, and then, the Rh catalytic complex is introduced by postsynthetic linker exchange. Infrared and Raman spectroscopies, ³¹P and ¹³C MAS NMR, N₂ adsorption isotherms, and X-ray diffraction indicate the structural integrity of all components (POM, Rh-complex and MOF) within the composite of interest (PW₁₂,Cp*Rh)@UiO-67. DFT calculations identified two possible locations of the POM in the octahedral cavities of the MOF: one at the center of a UiO-67 pore with the Cp*Rh complex pointing toward an empty pore and one off-centered with the Cp*Rh pointing toward the POM. ³¹P-¹H heteronuclear (HETCOR) experiments ascertained the two environments of the POM, equally distributed, with the POM in interaction either with the Cp* fragment or with the organic linker. In addition, Pair Distribution Function (PDF) data were collected on the POM@MOF composite and provided key evidence of the structural integrity of the POM once immobilized into the MOF. The photocatalytic activity of the (PW₁₂,Cp*Rh)@UiO-67 composite for CO₂ reduction into formate and hydrogen were evaluated. The formate production was doubled when compared with that observed with the POM-free Cp*Rh@UiO-67 catalyst and reached TONs as high as 175 when prepared as thin films, showing the beneficial influence of the POM. Finally, the stability of the composite was assessed by means of recyclability tests. The combination of XRD, IR, ICP, and PDF experiments was essential in confirming the integrity of the POM, the catalyst, and the MOF after catalysis.

Thin Films of Fully Noble Metal-Free POM@MOF for Photocatalytic Water Oxidation

P₂W₁₈Co₄@MOF-545, which contains the sandwich-type polyoxometalate (POM) [(PW₉O₃₄)₂Co₄(H₂O)₂]^10- (P₂W₁₈Co₄) immobilized in the porphyrinic metal-organic framework (MOF), MOF-545, is a "three-in-one" (porosity + light capture + catalysis) heterogeneous photosystem for the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER). Thin films of this composite were synthesized on transparent and conductive indium tin oxide (ITO) supports using electrophoretic (EP) or drop-casting (DC) methods, thus providing easy-to-use devices. Their electro- and photocatalytic activities for OER were investigated. Remarkably, both types of films exhibit higher turnover numbers (TONs) than the original bulk material previously studied as a suspension for the photocatalytic OER, with TONs after 2 h equal to 1600 and 403 for DC and EP films, respectively, compared to 70 for the suspension. This difference of catalytic activities is related to the proportion of efficiently illuminated crystallites, whereby a DC thin film offers the largest proportion of POM@MOF crystallites exposed to light due to its lower thickness when compared to an EP film or crystals in suspension. Such devices can be easily recycled by simply removing them from the reaction medium and washing them before reuse. The films were fully characterized with extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopies, Raman, scanning electron microscopy, and electrochemistry before and after catalysis. The combination of all of these techniques shows the stability of both the POM and the MOF within the composite upon water-oxidation reaction.

Immobilization of a Full Photosystem in the Large-Pore MIL-101 Metal-Organic Framework for CO2 reduction

A molecular catalyst [Cp*Rh(4,4'-bpydc)]²⁺ and a molecular photosensitizer [Ru(bpy)₂ (4,4'-bpydc)]²⁺ (bpydc=bipyridinedicarboxylic acid) were co-immobilized into the highly porous metal-organic framework MIL-101-NH₂ (Al) upon easy postsynthetic impregnation. The Rh-Ru@MIL-101-NH₂ composite allows the reduction of CO₂ under visible light, while exhibiting remarkable selectivity with the exclusive production of formate. This Rh-Ru@MIL-101-NH₂ solid represents the first example of MOFs functionalized with both a catalyst and a photosensitizer in a noncovalent fashion. Thanks to the coconfinement of the catalyst and photosensitizer into the cavity's nanospace, the MOF pores are used as nanoreactors and enable molecular catalysis in a heterogeneous manner.

A Fully Noble Metal-Free Photosystem Based on Cobalt-Polyoxometalates Immobilized in a Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Framework for Water Oxidation

The sandwich-type polyoxometalate (POM) [(PW₉O₃₄)₂Co₄(H₂O)₂]^10- was immobilized in the hexagonal channels of the Zr(IV) porphyrinic MOF-545 hybrid framework. The resulting composite was fully characterized by a panel of physicochemical techniques. Calculations allowed identifying the localization of the POM in the vicinity of the Zr₆ clusters and porphyrin linkers constituting the MOF. The material exhibits a high photocatalytic activity and good stability for visible-light-driven water oxidation. It thus represents a rare example of an all-in-one fully noble metal-free supramolecular heterogeneous photocatalytic system, with the catalyst and the photosensitizer within the same porous solid material.

Maximizing the Photocatalytic Activity of Metal-Organic Frameworks with Aminated-Functionalized Linkers: Substoichiometric Effects in MIL-125-NH2

Despite the promise of utilizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as highly tunable photocatalytic materials, systematic studies that interrogate the relationship between their catalytic performances and the amount of functionalized linkers are lacking. Aminated linkers are known to enhance the absorption of light and afford photocatalysis with MOFs under visible-light irradiation. However, the manner in which the photocatalytic performances are impacted by the amount of such linkers is poorly understood. Here, we assess the photocatalytic activity of MIL-125, a TiO₂/1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) MOF for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde when increasing amounts of bdc-NH₂ linkers (0%, 20%, 46%, 70%, and 100%) are incorporated in the framework. Analytical TEM allowed assessing the homogeneous localization of bdc-NH₂ in these mixed-linker MOFs. Steady state reaction rates reveal two regimes of catalytic performances: a first linear regime up to ∼50% bdc-NH₂ into the hybrid framework whereby increased amounts of bdc-NH₂ yielded increased photocatalytic rates, followed by a plateau up to 100% bdc-NH₂. This unexpected "saturation" of the catalytic activity above ∼50% bdc-NH₂ content in the framework whatever the wavelength filters used demonstrates that amination of all linkers of the MOF is not required to obtain the maximum photocatalytic activity. This is rationalized on the basis of mixed-valence Ti³⁺/Ti⁴⁺ intermediate catalytic centers revealed by electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements and recent knowledge of lifetime excited states in MIL-125-type of solids.

The UbiK protein is an accessory factor necessary for bacterial ubiquinone (UQ) biosynthesis and forms a complex with the UQ biogenesis factor UbiJ

Ubiquinone (UQ), also referred to as coenzyme Q, is a widespread lipophilic molecule in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes in which it primarily acts as an electron carrier. Eleven proteins are known to participate in UQ biosynthesis in Escherichia coli, and we recently demonstrated that UQ biosynthesis requires additional, nonenzymatic factors, some of which are still unknown. Here, we report on the identification of a bacterial gene, yqiC, which is required for efficient UQ biosynthesis, and which we have renamed ubiK Using several methods, we demonstrated that the UbiK protein forms a complex with the C-terminal part of UbiJ, another UQ biogenesis factor we previously identified. We found that both proteins are likely to contribute to global UQ biosynthesis rather than to a specific biosynthetic step, because both ubiK and ubiJ mutants accumulated octaprenylphenol, an early intermediate of the UQ biosynthetic pathway. Interestingly, we found that both proteins are dispensable for UQ biosynthesis under anaerobiosis, even though they were expressed in the absence of oxygen. We also provide evidence that the UbiK-UbiJ complex interacts with palmitoleic acid, a major lipid in E. coli Last, in Salmonella enterica, ubiK was required for proliferation in macrophages and virulence in mice. We conclude that although the role of the UbiK-UbiJ complex remains unknown, our results support the hypothesis that UbiK is an accessory factor of Ubi enzymes and facilitates UQ biosynthesis by acting as an assembly factor, a targeting factor, or both.

A Simple and Non-Destructive Method for Assessing the Incorporation of Bipyridine Dicarboxylates as Linkers within Metal-Organic Frameworks

As a novel avenue for applications, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are increasingly used for heterogenizing catalytic molecular species as linkers into their crystalline framework. These multifunctional compounds can be accessed with mixed linkers synthesis or postsynthetic-exchange strategies. Major limitations still reside in their challenging characterization; in particular, to provide evidence of the genuine incorporation of the functionalized linkers into the framework and their quantification. Herein, we demonstrate that a combination of computational chemistry, spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction allows access to a non-destructive analysis of mixed-linker UiO-67-type materials featuring biphenyl- and bipyridine-dicarboxylates. Our UV/Vis-based methodology has been further applied to characterize a series of Rh-functionalized UiO-67-type catalysts. The proposed approach allows a recurrent key issue in the characterization of similar supported organometallic systems to be solved.

Coenzyme Q Biosynthesis: Evidence for a Substrate Access Channel in the FAD-Dependent Monooxygenase Coq6

Coq6 is an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of coenzyme Q, a polyisoprenylated benzoquinone lipid essential to the function of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, this putative flavin-dependent monooxygenase is proposed to hydroxylate the benzene ring of coenzyme Q (ubiquinone) precursor at position C5. We show here through biochemical studies that Coq6 is a flavoprotein using FAD as a cofactor. Homology models of the Coq6-FAD complex are constructed and studied through molecular dynamics and substrate docking calculations of 3-hexaprenyl-4-hydroxyphenol (4-HP6), a bulky hydrophobic model substrate. We identify a putative access channel for Coq6 in a wild type model and propose in silico mutations positioned at its entrance capable of partially (G248R and L382E single mutations) or completely (a G248R-L382E double-mutation) blocking access to the channel for the substrate. Further in vivo assays support the computational predictions, thus explaining the decreased activities or inactivation of the mutated enzymes. This work provides the first detailed structural information of an important and highly conserved enzyme of ubiquinone biosynthesis.

Coq6 is responsible for the C4-deamination reaction in coenzyme Q biosynthesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is able to use para-aminobenzoic acid (pABA) in addition to 4-hydroxybenzoic acid as a precursor of coenzyme Q, a redox lipid essential to the function of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The biosynthesis of coenzyme Q from pABA requires a deamination reaction at position C4 of the benzene ring to substitute the amino group with an hydroxyl group. We show here that the FAD-dependent monooxygenase Coq6, which is known to hydroxylate position C5, also deaminates position C4 in a reaction implicating molecular oxygen, as demonstrated with labeling experiments. We identify mutations in Coq6 that abrogate the C4-deamination activity, whereas preserving the C5-hydroxylation activity. Several results support that the deletion of Coq9 impacts Coq6, thus explaining the C4-deamination defect observed in Δcoq9 cells. The vast majority of flavin monooxygenases catalyze hydroxylation reactions on a single position of their substrate. Coq6 is thus a rare example of a flavin monooxygenase that is able to act on two different carbon atoms of its C4-aminated substrate, allowing its deamination and ultimately its conversion into coenzyme Q by the other proteins constituting the coenzyme Q biosynthetic pathway.

Bioinspired Tungsten Dithiolene Catalysts for Hydrogen Evolution: A Combined Electrochemical, Photochemical, and Computational Study

Bis(dithiolene)tungsten complexes, W(VI)O2 (L = dithiolene)2 and W(IV)O (L = dithiolene)2, which mimic the active site of formate dehydrogenases, have been characterized by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis in acetonitrile. They are shown to be able to catalyze the electroreduction of protons into hydrogen in acidic organic media, with good Faradaic yields (75-95%) and good activity (rate constants of 100 s(-1)), with relatively high overpotentials (700 mV). They also catalyze proton reduction into hydrogen upon visible light irradiation, in combination with [Ru(bipyridine)3](2+) as a photosensitizer and ascorbic acid as a sacrificial electron donor. On the basis of detailed DFT calculations, a reaction mechanism is proposed in which the starting W(VI)O2 (L = dithiolene)2 complex acts as a precatalyst and hydrogen is further formed from a key reduced W-hydroxo-hydride intermediate.

Photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction with rhodium-based catalysts in solution and heterogenized within metal-organic frameworks

The first photosensitization of a rhodium-based catalytic system for CO2 reduction is reported, with formate as the sole carbon-containing product. Formate has wide industrial applications and is seen as valuable within fuel cell technologies as well as an interesting H2 -storage compound. Heterogenization of molecular rhodium catalysts is accomplished via the synthesis, post-synthetic linker exchange, and characterization of a new metal-organic framework (MOF) Cp*Rh@UiO-67. While the catalytic activities of the homogeneous and heterogeneous systems are found to be comparable, the MOF-based system is more stable and selective. Furthermore it can be recycled without loss of activity. For formate production, an optimal catalyst loading of ∼10 % molar Rh incorporation is determined. Increased incorporation of rhodium catalyst favors thermal decomposition of formate into H2 . There is no precedent for a MOF catalyzing the latter reaction so far.

Combined experimental and computational NMR study of crystalline and amorphous zeolitic imidazolate frameworks

ubiI, a new gene in Escherichia coli coenzyme Q biosynthesis, is involved in aerobic C5-hydroxylation

Coenzyme Q (ubiquinone or Q) is a redox-active lipid found in organisms ranging from bacteria to mammals in which it plays a crucial role in energy-generating processes. Q biosynthesis is a complex pathway that involves multiple proteins. In this work, we show that the uncharacterized conserved visC gene is involved in Q biosynthesis in Escherichia coli, and we have renamed it ubiI. Based on genetic and biochemical experiments, we establish that the UbiI protein functions in the C5-hydroxylation reaction. A strain deficient in ubiI has a low level of Q and accumulates a compound derived from the Q biosynthetic pathway, which we purified and characterized. We also demonstrate that UbiI is only implicated in aerobic Q biosynthesis and that an alternative enzyme catalyzes the C5-hydroxylation reaction in the absence of oxygen. We have solved the crystal structure of a truncated form of UbiI. This structure shares many features with the canonical FAD-dependent para-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase and represents the first structural characterization of a monooxygenase involved in Q biosynthesis. Site-directed mutagenesis confirms that residues of the flavin binding pocket of UbiI are important for activity. With our identification of UbiI, the three monooxygenases necessary for aerobic Q biosynthesis in E. coli are known.

Functional and electrophysiological characterization of four non-truncating mutations responsible for creatine transporter (SLC6A8) deficiency syndrome

Intellectual disability coupled with epilepsy are clinical hallmarks of the creatine (Cr) transporter deficiency syndrome resulting from mutations in the SLC6A8 gene. So far characterization of pathogenic mutations of SLC6A8 has been limited to Cr uptake. The aim of our study was to characterize the electrogenic and pharmacological properties of non truncating SLC6A8 mutations identified in patients presenting variable clinical severity. Electrophysiological and pharmacological properties of four mutants (including two novel ones) were studied in X. laevis oocyte expression system. Creatine uptake was assessed with [(14)C]-Cr in X. laevis and patients' fibroblasts. Subcellular localization was determined by immunofluorescence and western blot. All mutants were properly targeted to the plasma membrane in both systems. Mutations led to the complete loss of both electrogenic and transport activities in X. laevis and Cr uptake in patients' fibroblasts. Among the Cr analogs tested, guanidinopropionate induced an electrogenic activity with the normal SLC6A8 transporter similar to creatine whereas a phosphocreatine derivative, PCr-Mg-CPLX, resulted in partial activity. SLC6A8 mutants displayed no electrogenic activity with all Cr analogs tested in X. laevis oocytes. Although the mutations altered various domains of SLC6A8 Cr uptake and electrogenic properties were completely inhibited and could not be dissociated. Besides the metabolic functions of Cr, the loss of SLC6A8 electrogenic activity, demonstrated here for the first time, may also play a role in the altered brain functions of the patients.

Flexibility and swing effect on the adsorption of energy-related gases on ZIF-8: combined experimental and simulation study

ZIF-8, a prototypical zeolitic porous coordination polymer, prepared via the self-assembly of tetrahedral atoms (e.g. Zn and Co) and organic imidazolate linkers, presents large cavities which are interconnected by narrow windows that allow, in principle, molecular sieving. However, ZIF-8 shows flexibility due to the swing of the imidazolate linkers, which results in the adsorption of molecules which are too large to fit through the narrow window. In this work, we assess the impact of this flexibility, previously only observed for nitrogen, and the level of agreement between the experimental and simulated isotherms of different energy-related gases on ZIF-8 (CO(2), CH(4) and alkanes). We combine experimental gas adsorption with GCMC simulations, using generic and adjusted force fields and DFT calculations with the Grimme dispersion correction. By solely adapting the UFF force field to reduce the Lennard-Jones parameter ε, we achieve excellent agreement between the simulated and experimental results not only for ZIF-8 but also for ZIF-20, where the transferability of the adapted force field is successfully tested. Regarding ZIF-8, we show that two different structural configurations are needed to properly describe the adsorption performance of this material, demonstrating that ZIF-8 is undergoing a structural change during gas adsorption. DFT calculations with the Grimme dispersion correction are consistent with the GCMC and experimental observations, illustrating the thermodynamics of the CH(4) adsorption sites and confirming the existence of a new adsorption site with a high binding energy within the 4-ring window of ZIF-8.

Exceptionally low shear modulus in a prototypical imidazole-based metal-organic framework

Using Brillouin scattering, we measured the single-crystal elastic constants (C(ij)'s) of a prototypical metal-organic framework (MOF): zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8 [Zn(2-methylimidazolate)(2)], which adopts a zeolitic sodalite topology and exhibits large porosity. Its C(ij)'s under ambient conditions are (in GPa) C(11)=9.522(7), C(12)=6.865(14), and C(44)=0.967(4). Tensorial analysis of the C(ij)'s reveals the complete picture of the anisotropic elasticity in cubic ZIF-8. We show that ZIF-8 has a remarkably low shear modulus G(min) < or approximately 1 GPa, which is the lowest yet reported for a single-crystalline extended solid. Using ab initio calculations, we demonstrate that ZIF-8's C(ij)'s can be reliably predicted, and its elastic deformation mechanism is linked to the pliant ZnN(4) tetrahedra. Our results shed new light on the role of elastic constants in establishing the structural stability of MOF materials and thus their suitability for practical applications.

Polyoxometalate-based metal organic frameworks (POMOFs): structural trends, energetics, and high electrocatalytic efficiency for hydrogen evolution reaction

The grafting of the triangular 1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylate linkers (denoted trim) on tetrahedral ε-Keggin polyoxometalates (POMs) capped by Zn(II) ions, formed in situ under hydrothermal conditions, has generated three novel POM-based metal organic frameworks (POMOFs). (TBA)(3)[PMo(V)(8)Mo(VI)(4)O(36)(OH)(4)Zn(4)][C(6)H(3)(COO)(3)](4/3)·6H(2)O (ε(trim)(4/3)) is a 3D open-framework built of molecular Keggin units connected by trim linkers, with channels occupied by tetrabutylammonium (TBA) counterions. ε(trim)(4/3) is a novel (3,4)-connected net, named ofp for open-framework polyoxometalate, and computer simulations have been used to evaluate its relative stability in comparison with ctn- and bor-like polymorphs, showing the stability of this novel phase directly related to its greatest density. A computational study was also undertaken with the aim of locating TBA molecules, the positions of which could not be deduced from single crystal X-ray diffraction, and further rationalizes their structure directing role. In (TBA)(3)[PMo(V)(8)Mo(VI)(4)O(37)(OH)(3)Zn(4)][C(6)H(3)(COO)(3)] (ε(2)(trim)(2)), the building unit is not the molecular Keggin but a dimerized form of this POM. Their connection via trim linkers generates a 3D framework with channels filled by TBA cations. In (TBA)(3)[PMo(V)(8)Mo(VI)(4)O(37)(OH)(3)Zn(4)][C(6)H(3)(COO)(3)]·8H(2)O ([ε(trim)](∞)), zigzag chains are connected via the organic linkers, forming 2D grids. Modified electrodes were fabricated by direct adsorption of the POMOFs on glassy carbon or entrapment in carbon paste (CPE). A remarkable electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was detected with a yield greater than 95%, and a turnover number as high as 1.2 × 10(5) was obtained after 5 h. The reported POMOF-based electrodes are more active than platinum, with a roughly 260 mV anodic shift. Finally, the electrocatalytic activities of ε(trim)(4/3)/CPE electrodes in various XCl (X = Li, Na, K, Cs) media have been studied. This allowed us to detect a cation effect and propose an electrocatalytic mechanistic pathway for the HER.

Clinical and biochemical heterogeneity associated with fumarase deficiency

Fumarase deficiency (FD), caused by biallelic alteration of the Fumarase Hydratase gene (FH), and a rare metabolic disorder that affects the Krebs cycle, causes severe neurological impairment and fumaric aciduria. Less than 30 unrelated cases are known to date. In addition, heterozygous mutations of the FH gene are responsible for hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell cancer (HLRCC). We report three additional patients with dramatically different clinical presentations of FD and novel missense mutations in the FH gene. One patient had severe neonatal encephalopathy, polymicrogyria, <1% enzyme activity, and mildly increased levels of urinary fumarate. The second patient had microcephaly, mental retardation, 20% of fumarase activity, and intermediate levels of urinary fumarate. The third patient had mild mental retardation, polymicrogyria, 42-61% enzyme activity in different cell types and massive amounts of urinary fumarate. In silico analysis predicted minor yet significant structural changes in the encoded proteins. The nuclear translocation of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1alpha (HIF1A) in cultured fibroblasts was similar to controls. These results extend the range of clinical and biochemical variation associated with FD, supporting the notion that patients with moderate increases in fumarate excretion should be investigated for this disease. The tumoral risk in the patients and their relatives requires adequate screening protocols.
