Authentication of Polish Red Wines Produced from Zweigelt and Rondo Grape Varieties Based on Volatile Compounds Analysis in Combination with Machine Learning Algorithms: Hotrienol as a Marker of the Zweigelt Variety

The aim of this study was to determine volatile compounds in red wines of Zweigelt and Rondo varieties using HS-SPME/GC-MS and to find a marker and/or a classification model for the assessment of varietal authenticity. The wines were produced by using five commercial yeast strains and two types of malolactic fermentation. Sixty-seven volatile compounds were tentatively identified in the test wines; they represented several classes: 9 acids, 24 alcohols, 2 aldehydes, 19 esters, 2 furan compounds, 2 ketones, 1 sulfur compound and 8 terpenes. 3,7-dimethyl-1,5,7-octatrien-3-ol (hotrienol) was found to be a variety marker for Zweigelt wines, since it was detected in all the Zweigelt wines, but was not present in the Rondo wines at all. The relative concentrations of volatiles were used as an input data set, divided into two subsets (training and testing), to the support vector machine (SVM) and k-nearest neighbor (kNN) algorithms. Both machine learning methods yielded models with the highest possible classification accuracy (100%) when the relative concentrations of all the test compounds or alcohols alone were used as input data. An evaluation of the importance value of subsets consisting of six volatile compounds with the highest potential to distinguish between the Zweigelt and Rondo varieties revealed that SVM and kNN yielded the best classification models (F-score of 1, accuracy of 100%) when 3-ethyl-4-methylpentan-1-ol or 3,7-dimethyl-1,5,7-octatrien-3-ol (hotrienol) or subsets containing one or both of them were used. Moreover, the best SVM model (F-score of 1) was built with a subset containing 2-phenylethyl acetate and 3-(methylsulfanyl)propan-1-ol.

Equation of State of Liquid Water Written by Simple Experimental Polynomials and the Liquid-Liquid Critical Point

Experimental and theoretical evidence has been accumulating to support the liquid-liquid critical point (LLCP) hypothesis for water. However, no agreement has yet been reached on the pressure and temperature of LLCP. Here we made simple experimental equations that reproduced the volume of liquid water measured over a wide pressure-temperature range. They were polynomials that calculate pressure using volume and temperature as variables, and coefficients were determined by the method of least-squares. We analyzed the polynomials by changing the volume data and the number of terms in the polynomials and extrapolated them slightly to low temperatures. Consequently, the available experimental volume of liquid water indicated (but did not prove) the existence of LLCP at low temperature. Representative polynomials suggested that LLCP locates around 105 ± ∼ 9 MPa, 207 ± ∼ 5 K, and 0.993 ± ∼ 0.009 cm³/g.

Shock-Tube Measurements of Atomic Nitrogen Collisional Excitation in 8000-12000 K Partially Ionized Nitrogen-Argon Mixtures

We report on shock-tube experiments measuring the collisional excitation of atomic nitrogen using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). Conditions behind the reflected shocks ranged from 8000 to 12000 K and 0.1 to 1.1 atm in mixtures of 1 or 2% molecular nitrogen (N₂) in argon (Ar). Absorption from the transition between atomic nitrogen quantum states 4P to 4D at 868 nm was used to monitor the formation of electronically excited nitrogen. Population measurements of the 4P state were made at a rate of 50 kHz. In connection with these measurements, a multitemperature kinetic mechanism is proposed for nitrogen excitation. Measurements suggest a multistage process. In early test times, a period of induction due to N₂ dissociation is followed by a rise via heavy particle excitation. The dominant channel causing this excitation is believed to be N + N ↔ N(4P) + N with a measured forward rate constant of 3.65 × 10^-18 exp(-119892/T) [m³/s]. As test time evolves, the excitation of 4P, referred to as N*, is subsequently interrupted and then resumes, as the kinetic environment becomes increasingly electron-dominated. The most impactful reactions of the mechanism are optimized to reduce the residual between simulations and the measurements. The measured N* populations indicate strong, though indirect, sensitivity to adjacent processes, including the excitation of metastable nitrogen, and ionization channels.

Room-Temperature Phosphorescence and Cellular Phototoxicity Activated by Triplet Dynamics in Aggregates of Push-Pull Phenothiazine-Based Isomers

In this study, we report a comprehensive time-resolved spectroscopic investigation of the excited-state deactivation mechanism in three push-pull isomers characterized by a phenothiazine electron donor, a benzothiazole electron acceptor, and a phenyl π-bridge where the connection is realized at the relative ortho, meta, and para positions. Spin-orbit charge-transfer-induced intersystem crossing takes place with high yield in these all-organic donor-acceptor compounds, leading also to efficient production of singlet oxygen. Our spectroscopic results give clear evidence of room-temperature phosphorescence not only in solid-state host-guest matrices but also in highly biocompatible aggregates of these isomers produced in water dispersions, as rarely reported in the literature. Moreover, aggregates of the isomers could be internalized by lung cancer and melanoma cells and display bright luminescence without any dark cytotoxic effect. On the other hand, the isomers showed significant cellular phototoxicity against the tumor cells due to light-induced reactive oxygen species generation. Our findings strongly suggest that nanoaggregates of the investigated isomers are promising candidates for imaging-guided photodynamic therapy.

Radiolysis-Associated Decrease in Radiochemical Purity of 177Lu-Radiopharmaceuticals and Comparison of the Effectiveness of Selected Quenchers against This Process

The radiolytic degradation of vector molecules is a major factor affecting the shelf life of therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. The development of time-stable dosage forms of radiopharmaceuticals is the key to their successful implementation in clinical practice. Using [¹⁷⁷Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 molecule as an example, the time dependence of the change in radiochemical purity (RCP, %) under radiolysis conditions was studied. The dependence of [¹⁷⁷Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 radiolysis on parameters such as time, radionuclide activity, buffer agent concentration, precursor amount, and preparation volume was evaluated. It was shown that the absorbed dose was the dominant factor influencing the RCP. The RCP value is inversely proportional to the absorbed dose in the [¹⁷⁷Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 preparation and has an exponential dependence. The lutetium-177 dose factor ψ (Gy·mL·MBq^-1) and PSMA-617 concentration-dependent dose constant κ (Gy^-1) were evaluated for absorbed dose estimation via computer modeling, chemical dosimetry, and radiochemical purity monitoring under various conditions. The further refinement and application of the dependencies found can be useful for predicting the RCP value at the stage of optimizing the composition of the finished dosage form of therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. The influence of the buffer agent (sodium acetate) concentration on [¹⁷⁷Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 radiolytic degradation was shown and should be considered both when developing a dosage form, and when comparing the results of independent studies. The effectiveness of the addition of various stabilizing agents, such as DMSA, cysteine, gentisic acid, vanillin, methionine, adenine, dobesilic acid, thymine, uracil, nicotinamide, meglumine, and mannitol, in suppressing the effects of radiolysis was evaluated.

Diffusion mobility increases linearly on liquid binodals above triple point

Self-diffusion in fluids has been thoroughly studied numerically, but even for simple liquids just a few scaling relationships are known. Relations between diffusion, excitation spectra, and character of the interparticle interactions remain poorly understood. Here, we show that diffusion mobility of particles in simple fluids increases linearly on the liquid branch of the liquid-gas binodal, from the triple point almost up to the critical point. With molecular dynamics simulations, we considered bulk systems of particles interacting via a generalised Lennard-Jones potential, as well as ethane. Using a two-oscillator model for the analysis of excitations, we observed that the mobility (inverse diffusion) coefficient on the liquid-gas binodal increases linearly above the triple point until the dispersion of high-frequency spectra has a solid-like (oscillating) shape. In terms of a separate mode analysis (of longitudinal and transverse modes), this corresponds to crossed modes in the intermediate range of wavenumbers q, between the hydrodynamic regime (small q) and the regime of individual particle motion (large q). The results should be interesting for a broad community in physics and chemistry of fluids, since self-diffusion is among the most fundamental transport phenomena, important for prospective chemical technologies, micro-, nanofluidics, and biotechnologies.

Theory-Based Mechanism for Fluoromethane Combustion I: Thermochemistry and Abstraction Reactions

A new detailed chemical kinetic mechanism is presented for small fluorinated hydrocarbons. Ab initio electronic structure theory is used to provide heats of formation with subchemical accuracy. The ANL0 method is extended to include fluorine. The resulting heats of formation at 0 K are in excellent agreement with 36 benchmark species in the Active Thermochemical Tables, with a mean error of μ = -0.02 kJ/mol and a standard deviation of σ = 0.91 kJ/mol. The thermophysical properties for 92 small-molecule H/C/O/F species are computed. The rate coefficients for 40+ H-abstraction reactions involving H, O, F, OH, OF, HO₂, and various methyl radicals with CH₄, CH₃F, CH₂F₂, CHF₃, CH₂O, and CHFO are discussed. The computed rate constants are in excellent agreement with the available literature. Additionally, 30+ rate constants are provided for F abstraction, which are several orders of magnitude smaller than H abstraction. The thermophysical properties and rate constants are provided in a mechanism. This mechanism is the first in a series of theory-based investigations into the thermal destruction of per- and polyfluorinated species.

Effects of molecular size and orientation on the interfacial properties and wetting behavior of water/n-alkane systems: a molecular-dynamics study

Molecular dynamics simulations (MD) are performed to study the interfacial structure/tension and wetting behavior of water/n-alkane systems (water/nC5 to water/nC16 where nCx = CxH(2x + 2)). In particular, we study complete-to-partial wetting transitions by changing the n-alkane chain length (N_C) at a constant temperature, T = 295 K. Simulations are carried out with a united-atom TraPPE model for n-alkanes and the TIP4P-2005 model of water. Simulation results are in excellent agreement with the initial spreading coefficients and contact angles calculated using experimental values of the surface and interfacial tensions. In addition, it has been determined that water/(nC5-nC7) and water/(nC8-nC16), respectively, exhibit complete and partial initial wetting modes. Simulations show that the interfacial structures of water/(nC5-nC7) are different from water/(nC8-nC16) systems. In the latter, water preferentially orients near the interface to increase the number of hydrogen bonds and the charge and mass densities. Moreover, the orientation of n-alkane molecules at water/(nC8-nC16) interfaces has a long-range persistence, resulting in layered structures that increase with N_C. In addition, simulation results of the orientational order parameter S_z show alignment behavior of the n-alkane molecules with respect to the interfaces. Simulations predict that the central segments of n-alkane are strongly packed in the interfaces while the end segments (methyl groups) form smaller peaks in the outer edge of the layer. This observation confirms the "horseshoe" or "C-shaped" structure of n-alkane molecules in the water/n-alkane interfaces. At constant temperature, the interface widths of both water and the n-alkanes decrease with increasing n-alkane molecular length. These results suggest that increasing the n-alkane chain length affects the water/n-alkane interfacial properties in a manner similar to that of cooling.

GPU-accelerated Monte Carlo simulation of electron and photon interactions for radiotherapy applications

Objective. The Monte Carlo simulation software is a valuable tool in radiation therapy, in particular to achieve the needed accuracy in the dose evaluation for the treatment plans optimisation. The current challenge in this field is the time reduction to open the way to many clinical applications for which the computational time is an issue. In this manuscript we present an innovative GPU-accelerated Monte Carlo software for dose valuation in electron and photon based radiotherapy, developed as an update of the FRED (Fast paRticle thErapy Dose evaluator) software.Approach. The code transports particles through a 3D voxel grid, while scoring their energy deposition along their trajectory. The models of electromagnetic interactions in the energy region between 1 MeV-1 GeV available in literature have been implemented to efficiently run on GPUs, allowing to combine a fast tracking while keeping high accuracy in dose assessment. The FRED software has been bench-marked against state-of-art full MC (FLUKA, GEANT4) in the realm of two different radiotherapy applications: Intra-Operative Radio Therapy and Very High Electron Energy radiotherapy applications.Results. The single pencil beam dose-depth profiles in water as well as the dose map computed on non-homogeneous phantom agree with full-MCs at 2% level, observing a gain in processing time from 200 to 5000.Significance. Such performance allows for computing a plan with electron beams in few minutes with an accuracy of ∼%, demonstrating the FRED potential to be adopted for fast plan re-calculation in photon or electron radiotherapy applications.

A spin statistical factor in electron transfer to oxygen molecules

The oxygen molecule in its ground triplet state (³O₂) is a strong electron acceptor. Electron transfer to ³O₂ to form a superoxide anion is an important elementary step in many chemical and biological processes. If this transfer occurs from a spin 1/2 paramagnetic particle where the total spin of the reactants is equal to 3/2, the reaction is spin-forbidden. In liquids, the significant dipole-dipole electron spin interaction in ³O₂ is supposed to mix the non-reactive quartet and reactive doublet states at a time scale of ∼10 ps, thus avoiding the barrier. To elucidate the role of spin effects in the electron transfer to ³O₂, we studied this reaction over a range of more than three orders of magnitude of the relative diffusion coefficient (D) of the reactants. It was found that spin effects during electron transfer to ³O₂ become insignificant when D < 10^-9 m² s^-1. In the range of intermediate D values (10^-9 m² s^-1 < D < 10^-8 m² s^-1) - which corresponds to some reactions of oxygen with small radicals in aqueous solutions - the effective spin factor decreases with increasing D value. If D > 10^-8 m² s^-1, the electron transfer is spin-selective with the spin factor of 1/3 as determined by the spin statistics. At such D values, the reaction encounter time may exceed the expected quartet-doublet mixing time by almost an order of magnitude. The reduced rate of quartet-doublet transitions within the encounter complex in the reaction with ³O₂ has been explained by the spin-exchange interaction and chemical Zeno effect.

The long-lived reactive nitrogen species in the troposphere: DFTB model for atmospheric applications

The longest lived reactive NO₂ molecule formation in a dry and clean air environment under a high-temperature shock wave was investigated under three basic reactions (R2 for the O + NO system, R6 for the NO + NO₃ system, and R7 for the NO + O₃ system) in the atmospheric environment. With certain approaches, a DFTB3 model was used, which gave results close to the density functional theory. In the calculations, the related reactions up to 250 ps were examined at individual specific temperatures, and the temperature ranges that contributed to the formation of the NO₂ molecule were determined. Moreover, a shock wave with both heating and cooling channels was applied only on R2 to see whether molecular concentrations were in good agreement with atmospheric information. The reaction products were examined under a shock wave of about 20 ps. At the end of the study, the applicability of the DFTB model to atmospheric systems was demonstrated by comparing it with experimental data and information. QCT approach was also used for the calculation of reaction rate constants of only O₂-formation on the O + NO system. Here, all systems are focused on nitrogen species containing oxygen. In particular, the highest-population NO molecule that emerged in the lightning flash event was used as the reactant, while systems existing with the longest lived NO₂ in the atmosphere after the lightning flash were focused in the product channel. As a result of the study, the hypothesis of geophysicists that almost all NO₂ formed in the lightning flash event originates from the NO + O system was disproved. It has been proven that the presence of NO₃ molecules that can withstand high temperatures in such systems should be evaluated.

Improving tumor/muscle and tumor/blood ratios of 99mTc-labeled nitroimidazole propylene amine oxime (PnAO) complexes with ethylene glycol linkers

Three nitroimidazole propylene amine oxime (PnAO) derivatives with different lengths of ethylene glycol chain were synthesized and radiolabeled with ^99mTc. The radiochemical purities of three ^99mTc-labeled complexes, oxo[[6,6,12,12-tetramethyl-1,17-bis(2-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)-3,15-dioxa-7,11-diazaheptadecane-5, 13-dione dioximato] (3-)-N,N',N'',N''']-technetium-99m (^99mTc-2P2O1), oxo[[9,9,15,15-tetramethyl-1,23-bis(2-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)-3,6,18,21-tetraoxa-10, 14-diazatricosane-8,16-dione dioximato] (3-)-N,N',N'',N''']-technetium-99m (^99mTc-2P2O2) and oxo[[15,15,21,21-tetramethyl-1,35-bis(2-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)-3,6,9,12,24,27,30,33-octaoxa-16,20-diazapentatriacontane-14,22-dione dioximato] (3-)-N,N',N'',N''']-technetium-99m (^99mTc-2P2O4), were above 90%, and they were all stable both in vitro and in vivo. The hypoxia/normoxia uptake ratios of the three complexes were 2.92 ± 0.61, 2.63 ± 0.64 and 2.29 ± 0.67 in S180 cellular uptake assay (4 h). All of these complexes presented good hypoxia selectivity. The results of biodistribution studies in S180 tumor-bearing mice revealed that the tumor/muscle (T/M) ratios (7.20 ± 2.37, 7.19 ± 1.75, 5.56 ± 1.10) and tumor/blood (T/B) ratios (1.66 ± 0.34, 1.73 ± 0.25, 2.13 ± 0.19) at 4 h of three complexes were significantly higher than those of ^99mTc-2P2 (3.24 ± 0.65, 0.81 ± 0.34) without the ethylene glycol chains. Among them, ^99mTc-2P2O4 had the best T/B ratio. The new complexes have higher tumor/blood and tumor/muscle ratios by adding suitable length of ethylene glycol chain. It is helpful for the design and optimization of hypoxic imaging agents.

Microhydrated clusters of a pharmaceutical drug: infrared spectra and structures of amantadineH+(H2O)n

Solvation of pharmaceutical drugs has an important effect on their structure and function. Analysis of infrared photodissociation spectra of amantadineH⁺(H₂O)_n=1-4 clusters in the sensitive OH, NH, and CH stretch range by quantum chemical calculations (B3LYP-D3/cc-pVTZ) provides a first impression of the interaction of this pharmaceutically active cation with water at the molecular level. The size-dependent frequency shifts reveal detailed information about the acidity of the protons of the NH₃⁺ group of N-protonated amantadineH⁺ (AmaH⁺) and the strength of the NH⋯O and OH⋯O hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) of the hydration network. The preferred cluster growth begins with sequential hydration of the NH₃⁺ group by NH⋯O ionic H-bonds (n = 1-3), followed by the extension of the solvent network through OH⋯O H-bonds. However, smaller populations of cluster isomers with an H-bonded solvent network and free N-H bonds are already observed for n ≥ 2, indicating the subtle competition between noncooperative ion hydration and cooperative H-bonding. Interestingly, cyclic water ring structures are identified for n ≥ 3, each with two NH⋯O and two OH⋯O H-bonds. Despite the increasing destabilization of the N-H proton donor bonds upon gradual hydration, no proton transfer to the (H₂O)_n solvent cluster is observed up to n = 4. In addition to ammonium cluster ions, a small population of microhydrated iminium isomers is also detected, which is substantially lower for the hydrophilic H₂O than for the hydrophobic Ar environment.

Redox Potentials with COSMO-RS: Systematic Benchmarking with Different Databases

Recent techniques of computational electrochemistry can yield redox potentials with accuracy as good as 0.1 V. Yet, many such methods are not universal, easy to use, or computationally efficient. Herein, we provide a systematic benchmarking of a relatively cheap and straightforward computational approach for fairly accurate computations of redox potentials. It is based on a combination of the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) and the density functional theory (DFT). The benchmarking is done with databases covering diverse redox systems, including transition-metal aquacomplexes and various organic and inorganic compounds. In addition, we also present our own test set aiming at maximum chemical diversity and maximum range of redox potential values. We assess the performance of the fairly efficient computational protocol combining the COSMO-RS with the BP86 DFT functional. This is done by calibrating it against different high-level state-of-the-art techniques, in particular, polarizable continuum model (PCM) connected to composite G3(MP2,CC)(+) method, domain-based pair natural orbital implementation of coupled cluster theory, or complete basis set CBS-QB3 method. We also elaborate on the absolute reduction potential value of standard hydrogen electrode to be used with COSMO-RS, and we propose the value of approx. 4.4 V. The COSMO-RS/BP86-D3(BJ) combination outperforms other methods on a wide range of redox systems. However, we show that its accuracy is based on a balanced error cancelation and, therefore, it cannot be further systematically improved. As a result, the proposed procedure represents a pragmatic choice for large-scale screening, yet it could be combined with more advanced methods for detailed studies.

Self-consistent implementation of locally scaled self-interaction-correction method

Recently proposed local self-interaction correction (LSIC) method [Zope et al., J. Chem. Phys. 151, 214108 (2019)] is a one-electron self-interaction-correction (SIC) method that uses an iso-orbital indicator to apply the SIC at each point in space by scaling the exchange-correlation and Coulomb energy densities. The LSIC method is exact for the one-electron densities, also recovers the uniform electron gas limit of the uncorrected density functional approximation, and reduces to the well-known Perdew-Zunger SIC (PZSIC) method as a special case. This article presents the self-consistent implementation of the LSIC method using the ratio of Weizsäcker and Kohn-Sham kinetic energy densities as an iso-orbital indicator. The atomic forces as well as the forces on the Fermi-Löwdin orbitals are also implemented for the LSIC energy functional. Results show that LSIC with the simplest local spin density functional predicts atomization energies of the AE6 dataset better than some of the most widely used generalized-gradient-approximation (GGA) functional [e.g., Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE)] and barrier heights of the BH6 database better than some of the most widely used hybrid functionals (e.g., PBE0 and B3LYP). The LSIC method [a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.008 Å] predicts bond lengths of a small set of molecules better than the PZSIC-LSDA (MAE 0.042 Å) and LSDA (0.011 Å). This work shows that accurate results can be obtained from the simplest density functional by removing the self-interaction-errors using an appropriately designed SIC method.

Accurate Spin-Orbit Coupling by Relativistic Mixed-Reference Spin-Flip-TDDFT

Relativistic mixed-reference spin-flip (MRSF)-TDDFT is developed considering the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) within the mean-field approximation. The resulting SOC-MRSF faithfully reproduces the experiments with very high accuracy, which is also consistent with the values by four-component (4c) relativistic CASSCF and 4c-CASPT2 in the spin-orbit-energy splitting calculations of the C, Si, and Ge atoms. Even for the fifth-row element Sn, the SOC-MRSF yielded accurate splittings (∼ 3 % error). In the SOC calculations of the molecular 4-thiothymine with a third-row element, SOC-MRSF values are in excellent agreement with those of the SO-GMC-QDPT2 level, regardless of geometries and exchange-correlation functionals. The same SOC-MRSF predicted the anticipated chance of S₁ (nπ*) → T₁ (ππ*) intersystem crossing, even in thymine with only second-row elements. With its accuracy and practicality, thus, SOC-MRSF is a promising electronic structure protocol in challenging situations such as nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) incorporating both internal conversions and intersystem crossings in large systems.

Enhanced Heterogeneous Catalytic Activity of Peroxymonosulfate for Rhodamine B Degradation via a CoII-Based Metal-Organic Framework

A stable metal-organic framework with the formula {[Co(BBZB)(IPA)]·H₂O}_n (JXUST-23, BBZB = 4,7-bis(1H-benzimidazole-1-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and H₂IPA = isophthalic acid) was constructed by incorporating Co²⁺ ions and two conjugated ligands under solvothermal conditions. JXUST-23 takes a dinuclear cluster-based layer structure with a porosity of 2.7%. In this work, JXUST-23 was used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade rhodamine B (RhB), a difficult-to-degrade pollutant in water. Compared with pure PMS or JXUST-23, the JXUST-23/PMS system displays the best degradation ability of RhB in neutral solution. When the mass ratio of JXUST-23 to PMS was 2:3, 99.72% of RhB (50 ppm) was removed within 60 min, and the reaction rate was 0.1 min^-1. Furthermore, free radical quenching experiments show that SO₄^•- was the main free radical during the process of RhB degradation. In addition, JXUST-23 exhibits good reusability for the degradation of the organic dye RhB, making it a potential candidate for environmental remediation.

Study on persulfate activated by Ce-modified tea waste biochar to degrade tetracycline

In this study, the Ce-modified tea residue biochar (Ce-TBC) was successfully generated and applied to the biochar/persulfate system (Ce-TBC/PDS), the mechanism of the removal of tetracycline (TC) using Ce-TBC/PDS was elaborated. Under the optimal experimental conditions (Ce-TBC = 0.8 g L^-1, PDS = 4 mM, TC = 10 mg L^-1), the removal efficiency of TC was 91.28%, and after 5 cycles, the elimination rate of Ce-TBC/PDS still reached up to 80%. The mechanism of TC removal by Ce-TBC/PDS was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier infrared transform spectrometer (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) characterization, and influence factor experiments. The results showed that the introduction of CeO_x increased the oxygen vacancies on the TBC surface and promoted the interconversion between Ce³⁺ and Ce⁴⁺ for better activation of PDS and generation of active species. Free radical quenching experiments and paramagnetic resonance spectrometry (EPR) analysis showed that the non-radical pathway ¹O₂ played a dominant role in the Ce-TBC/PDS system. The present work provided an efficient means of PDS activator and recycling of tea waste.

Heterostructures with Built-in Electric Fields for Long-lasting Chemodynamic Therapy

Sustained signal activation by hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH) has great significance, especially for tumor treatment, but remains challenging. Here, a built-in electric field (BIEF)-driven strategy was proposed for sustainable generation of ⋅OH, thereby achieving long-lasting chemodynamic therapy (LCDT). As a proof of concept, a novel Janus-like Fe@Fe₃ O₄ -Cu₂ O heterogeneous catalyst was designed and synthesized, in which the BIEF induced the transfer of electrons in the Fe core to the surface, reducing ≡Cu²⁺ to ≡Cu⁺ , thus achieving continuous Fenton-like reactions and ⋅OH release for over 18 h, which is approximately 12 times longer than that of Fe₃ O₄ -Cu₂ O and 72 times longer than that of Cu₂ O nanoparticles. In vitro and in vivo antitumor results indicated that sustained ⋅OH levels led to persistent extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK) signal activation and irreparable oxidative damage to tumor cells, which promoted irreversible tumor apoptosis. Importantly, this strategy provides ideas for developing long-acting nanoplatforms for various applications.

Anion-Directed Self-Assembly of Calix[4]arene-Based Silver(I) Coordination Polymers and Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Coordination polymers (CPs) have recently emerged as promising candidates for heterogeneous photocatalysis due to their structural designability and tunable properties. Herein, we developed two novel Ag(I)-calix[4]arene coordination polymers with the formula {[Ag₂(μ-NO₃)L¹]}_n (CP 1) and {[AgL¹]·PF₆}_n (CP 2) (L¹ = 2-mercapto-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole resorcinol calix[4]arene). Crystallography revealed that anion coordination and self-inclusion behavior induced the cavitand and silver ions to self-assemble into well-defined CPs 1 and 2 with different topological coordination frameworks, respectively. Furthermore, CPs 1 and 2 display high photocatalytic activity for the photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under mild conditions (WLED and UV irradiation). The comparison results demonstrate that CP 1 exhibited better photocatalytic performance than CP 2, which correlated well with the differences in their molecular structure and HOMO-LUMO energy gaps. The photocatalysis products and possible intermediates were successfully monitored and determined using mass spectrum, gas chromatography, and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. The rational photocatalysis mechanism was further investigated and proposed.

Complete, Theoretical Rovibronic Spectral Characterization of the Carbon Monoxide, Water, and Formaldehyde Cations

New high-level ab initio quartic force field (QFF) methods are explored which provide spectroscopic data for the electronically excited states of the carbon monoxide, water, and formaldehyde cations, sentinel species for expanded, recent cometary spectral analysis. QFFs based on equation-of-motion ionization potential (EOM-IP) with a complete basis set extrapolation and core correlation corrections provide assignment for the fundamental vibrational frequencies of the A˜2B1 and B˜2A1 states of the formaldehyde cation; only three of these frequencies have experimental assignment available. Rotational constants corresponding to these vibrational excitations are also provided for the first time for all electronically excited states of both of these molecules. EOM-IP-CCSDT/CcC computations support tentative re-assignment of the ν1 and ν3 frequencies of the B˜2B2 state of the water cation to approximately 2409.3 cm-1 and 1785.7 cm-1, respectively, due to significant disagreement between experimental assignment and all levels of theory computed herein, as well as work by previous authors. The EOM-IP-CCSDT/CcC QFF achieves agreement to within 12 cm-1 for the fundamental vibrational frequencies of the electronic ground state of the water cation compared to experimental values and to the high-level theoretical benchmarks for variationally-accessible states. Less costly EOM-IP based approaches are also explored using approximate triples coupled cluster methods, as well as electronically excited state QFFs based on EOM-CC3 and the previous (T)+EOM approach. The novel data, including vibrationally corrected rotational constants for all states studied herein, provided by these computations should be useful in clarifying comet evolution or other remote sensing applications in addition to fundamental spectroscopy.

Chemical Composition, Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Bioautography Activity of Essential Oil from Leaves of Amazon Plant Clinopodium brownei (Sw.)

The Amazonian region of Ecuador has an extremely rich vegetal biodiversity, and its inhabitants have proven to have a millennial ancestral knowledge of the therapeutic and medicinal use of these resources. This work aimed to evaluate the chemical composition and biological activity of the essential oil obtained from the medicinal plant Clinopodium brownei (Sw.) Kuntze, which is widely spread in tropical and subtropical America. This species is traditionally used for treating respiratory and digestive diseases and is also known for its analgesic properties. Most of the molecules detected on a non-polar column were ethyl cinnamate 21.4%, pulegone 20.76%, methyl cinnamate 16.68%, caryophyllene 8.17%, β-selinene 7.92% and menthone 7.51%, while those detected on a polar column were: pulegone 29.90%, ethyl cinnamate 18.75%, methyl cinnamate 13.82%, caryophyllene 10.0% and menthone 8.04%. The antioxidant activity by the assays, DPPH (2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2.2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)), shows the following values of 50% inhibition of oxidation, IC50 DPPH 1.77 mg/mL, IC50 ABTS 0.06 mg/mL, which, compared to the essential oil of Thymus vulgaris (natural positive control), turn out to be less active. Bioautography indicates that the molecules responsible for the antioxidant activity are derived from cinnamic acid: ethyl cinnamate and methyl cinnamate, and caryophyllene. The antimicrobial activity on the nine microorganisms evaluated shows bacterial growth inhibitory concentrations ranging from 13.6 mg/mL for Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 14990 to 3.1 mg/mL for Candida albicans ATCC 10231; the results are lower than those of the positive control. Bioautography assigns antimicrobial activity to caryophyllene. The results indicate a very interesting activity of the essential oil and several of its molecules, validating the traditional use and the importance of this medicinal plant from Ecuador.

Dewetting-Induced Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Block Copolymers Templated by Colloidal Crystals

Recent advances in high-performance flexible electronic devices have increased the demand for more diverse and complex nanofabrication methods; high-resolution, high-efficiency, and low-cost patterning strategies for next-generation devices are therefore required. In this study, we demonstrate the formation of dewetting-induced hierarchical patterns using two self-assembled materials: block copolymers (BCPs) and colloidal crystals. The combination of the two self-assembly methods successfully generates multiscale hierarchical patterns because the length scales of the periodic colloidal crystal structures are suitable for templating the BCP patterns. Various concentric ring patterns were observed on the templated BCP films, and a free energy model of the polymer chain was applied to explain the formation of these patterns relative to the template width. Frequently occurring spiral-defective features were also examined and found to be promoted by Y-junction defects.

Biomimetic Liquid Metal-Elastomer Composited Foam with Adjustable Thermal Conductivity for Heat Control

The application of traditional materials with constant thermal conductivity in time-varying thermal environments poses great challenges due to their inability of adjusting thermal conductivity according to different requirements, for which reason materials with adjustable thermal conductivity have attracted much attention. However, certain limitations induced by those materials' low softness or harsh adjustment conditions restrict them from being applied in heat dissipation and heat transfer scenarios. In this study, we report a biomimetic liquid metal-elastomer composited foam with adjustable thermal conductivity (B-LM-ECF). Inspired by the rationale of homeothermic animals regulating the thermal conductivity of their subcutaneous tissue, the prepared material adjusts its thermal conductivity via adjusting the volume proportion of liquid metal within it. The thermal conductivity of B-LM-ECF can be adjusted within the range of 0.11-8.4 W·m-1K-1. The adjustment factor η of B-LM-ECF is 76, which is defined as the ratio of the highest to the lowest thermal conductivity of the material. The material enabling reversible switching for itself from thermal insulation to heat dissipation. The prepared material exhibits 45 KPa of Young's modulus with the maximum fracture tensile rate of 600%, facilitating better covering for thermal management objects. We selected a power lithium battery and a smartphone as specific thermal management objects to demonstrate its practical application in thermal management experiment.

Noncovalent Interactions in Crowded Benzene Systems: How Much Strain Is Too Much? Attractions Overcome Repulsions!

In molecular design, large alkyl groups are used to introduce bulk and steric crowding of the catalytic center to improve catalytic efficiency and selectivity. The bulky groups are highly polarizable, increasing their ability to participate in stabilizing noncovalent interactions. The rationalization of noncovalent interaction trends is of both fundamental and practical interest as it provides new design concepts for catalysis and synthesis. Highly congested molecules always present challenges to chemists. Crowded benzene systems are an important class of compounds with well-established thermodynamic properties. The latter were used in this work to develop tools to quantify the degree of stabilization or destabilization in benzene systems crowded with bulky isopropyl and tert-butyl substituents. The basic idea was to quantify the delicate balance between repulsive and attractive interactions inherent in crowded benzene systems. The ensemble of experimental thermodynamic data and DFT-D3 calculations enabled the development of quantitative scales of the dispersion contributions and their understanding at the molecular level.

Pt(II)-PLGA Hybrid in a pH-Responsive Nanoparticle System Targeting Ovarian Cancer

Platinum-based agents are the main treatment option in ovarian cancer (OC). Herein, we report a poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticle (NP) encapsulating platinum (II), which is targeted to a cell-spanning protein overexpressed in above 90% of late-stage OC, mucin 1 (MUC1). The NP is coated with phospholipid-DNA aptamers against MUC1 and a pH-sensitive PEG derivative containing an acid-labile hydrazone linkage. The pH-sensitive PEG serves as an off-on switch that provides shielding effects at the physiological pH and is shed at lower pH, thus exposing the MUC1 ligands. The pH-MUC1-Pt NPs are stable in the serum and display pH-dependent PEG cleavage and drug release. Moreover, the NPs effectively internalize in OC cells with higher accumulation at lower pH. The Pt (II) loading into the NP was accomplished via PLGA-Pt (II) coordination chemistry and was found to be 1.62 wt.%. In vitro screening using a panel of OC cell lines revealed that pH-MUC1-Pt NP has a greater effect in reducing cellular viability than carboplatin, a clinically relevant drug analogue. Biodistribution studies have demonstrated NP accumulation at tumor sites with effective Pt (II) delivery. Together, these results demonstrate a potential for pH-MUC1-Pt NP for the enhanced Pt (II) therapy of OC and other solid tumors currently treated with platinum agents.

A Theoretical Study of Scattering of e± by Tl Atom

This article incorporates details of our calculations of the observable quantities for the scattering of electrons and positrons from a post transition metal Thallium (Tl), in the energy range of 1 eV ≤ Ei ≤ 1 MeV, using the relativistic Dirac partial wave (phase-shift) analysis employing a complex optical-potential. Absolute differential, integrated elastic and inelastic, transport, total ionization, and total cross sections and a thorough study of the critical minima in the elastic differential cross sections along with the associated angular positions of the maximum polarization points in the Sherman function are provided to study the collision dynamics. The optical potential model incorporates the interactions of the incident electron and/or positron with both the nucleus and the bound electrons of the target atom. In-depth analyses of the spin asymmetry, which are sensitive to phases related interference effect, brought on by the various ingredients of the lepton-atom interaction, are also presented. The performance of the current approach to explain the observations, with the exception of the extremely low energy domain, is shown by a comparison of the previous experimental and theoretical results on this target atom.

High-Temperature Dissociation of Neopentanol: Shock Tube/Photoionization Mass Spectrometry Studies

The pyrolysis mechanism of 2,2-dimethylpropan-1-ol (neopentanol) has been investigated at high temperatures (1128-1401K) and high pressures (5 and 15 bar). The experiments were performed in a miniature shock tube coupled to a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Cations were generated by tunable vacuum ultraviolet photoionization resulting in multidimensional data sets containing mass and photoionization spectra and the time histories of species. At the elevated temperatures and pressures of this work, neopentanol was determined to dissociate primarily by the scission of a C-C bond yielding tert-butyl and hydroxymethyl radicals. These promptly form isobutene and formaldehyde by H-atom elimination. In the structurally similar molecule neopentane, roaming radical reactions have previously been found to be important under conditions close to the present work (1260-1459 K, 1.1 bar). There are two possible roaming radical reactions for neopentanol. However, no experimental evidence for these reactions was found at the elevated pressures in this study, and the dissociation of neopentanol is dominated by bond scission yielding radical products.

Coupling the effect of Co and Mo on peroxymonosulfate activation for the removal of organic pollutants

Although heterogeneous cobalt-based catalysts have been widely studied and used in SO₄^•- based advanced oxidation processes, the efficiencies were still not high enough due to the limiting step of Co(III)/Co(II) cycle in the system. In this study, a bimetallic oxide composed of Co and Mo was designed and used for enhancing the performance of peroxymonosulfate activation on organic pollutants removal. The CoMoO₄ nanorods exhibited superior catalytic activity for methylene blue (MB) degradation than Co₃O₄, MoO₃, and their mechanical mixture, which was attributed to the synergetic effect between Co and Mo. CoMoO₄ nanorods were able to efficiently degrade MB under a wide pH range of 3-11 and could maintain high efficiency in 5 cycles with less leakage of metal ions. Moreover, CoMoO₄ nanorods displayed broad spectrum applicability to the different water matrix and a variety of pollutants such as phenol and Congo red. The Co(II) was proved to be the main active site of the catalyst, while Mo played an important role in promoting the Co(III)/Co(II) cycle. Surface free radicals are the main active species in the degradation process. This work provides new insights into the design of cobalt-based bimetallic catalyst and the improvement on PMS activation.

Efficient degradation of trichloroethene with the existence of surfactants by peroxymonosulfate activated by nano-zero-valent iron: performance and mechanism investigation

In this study, the degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) with the existence of tween-80 (TW-80) or sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) using peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated by nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) was investigated. Over 87.6% TCE (with 1.3 g L^-1 TW-80 presence) was degraded by 0.9 mM PMS and 0.12 g L^-1 nZVI, while 89.7% TCE (with 2.3 g L^-1 SDS presence) was degraded by 1.2 mM PMS and 0.20 g L^-1 nZVI, in which more than 71.9% TCE with TW-80 existence and 87.5% TCE with SDS existence were dechlorinated. Besides, the effects of some factors (i.e., PMS and nZVI dosages, initial solution pH, and inorganic anions) on TCE removal were evaluated. The degradation of TCE was restrained continuously with increasing surfactant concentration, and TW-80 was more easily decomposed than SDS in PMS/nZVI system. Furthermore, sulfate radical (SO₄^-•) and hydroxyl radical (HO•) were demonstrated the main reactive oxygen species (ROS) contributing to TCE degradation and SO₄^-• played a dominant role through EPR tests and ROS scavenging experiments. Finally, the results of TCE degradation in actual groundwater confirmed that PMS/nZVI process has great advantages and potential in remediation of actual TCE-contaminated groundwater with TW-80 or SDS existence.

Molecular Dynamics and Experimental Study of the Effect of CeF3 and NdF3 Additives on the Physical Properties of FLiNaK

The paper presents the results, which are consistent within 2%, obtained both in the simulation of molecular dynamics and in the experiment on the study of the kinetic properties of molten FLiNaK with addition of lanthanide fluorides. The parameters of the Born-Huggins-Meier potential for the interaction of CeF₃ or NdF₃ with FLiNaK components are first calculated using the ab initio approach. The enthalpy of the system with dissolved CeF₃ or NdF₃ calculated in the model increases by ∼4.4% over the entire temperature range studied (800 ≤ T ≤ 1020 K). The self-diffusion coefficients of the molten salt components are calculated from the Einstein relation and also estimated from the shear viscosity data. The temperature dependences of the shear viscosity of molten FLiNaK as well as FLiNaK with additions of 15 mol % CeF₃ or NdF₃ are determined experimentally and by calculation. In addition, the dependence of shear viscosity on the concentration of CeF₃ and NdF₃ in FLiNaK is measured and calculated. The linear growth of the shear viscosity with the CeF₃ and NdF₃ concentrations is obtained. Experimental dependence is in good agreement with the simulated results in the case of NdF₃, and there is the discrepancy while CeF₃ addition. An analytical approximation of the temperature and concentration dependences for the viscosity of molten FliNaK and for the calculated self-diffusion coefficients of constituent elements is proposed. Linear approximation of temperature dependence of the self-diffusion coefficients of similar components in the corresponding extended systems is presented.

Kinetic Study for Plasma Assisted Cracking of NH3: Approaches and Challenges

Ammonia is considered as one of the promising hydrogen carriers toward a sustainable world. Plasma assisted decomposition of NH₃ could provide cost- and energy-effective, low-temperature, on-demand (partial) cracking of NH₃ into H₂. Here, we presented a temperature-dependent plasma-chemical kinetic study to investigate the role of both electron-induced reactions and thermally induced reactions on the decomposition of NH₃. We employed a plasma-chemical kinetic model (KAUSTKin), developed a plasma-chemical reaction mechanism for the numerical analysis, and introduced a temperature-controlled dielectric barrier discharge reactor for the experimental investigation using 1 mol % NH₃ diluted in N₂. As a result, we observed the plasma significantly lowered the cracking temperature and found that the plasma-chemical mechanism should be further improved to better predict the experiment. The commonly used rates for the key NH₃ pyrolysis reaction (NH₃ + M ↔ NH₂ + H + M) significantly overpredicted the recombination rate at temperatures below 600 K. Furthermore, the other identified shortcomings in the available data are (i) thermal hydrazine chemistry, (ii) electron-scattering cross-section data of N_xH_y, (iii) electron-impact dissociation of N₂, and (iv) dissociative quenching of excited states of N₂. We believe that the present study will spark fundamental interest to address these shortcomings and contribute to technical advancements in plasma assisted NH₃ cracking technology.

Hydrogen isotope analysis in W-tiles using fs-LIBS

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is a promising technology for in-situ analysis of Plasma-Facing Components in magnetic confinement fusion facilities. It is of major interest to monitor the hydrogen isotope retention i.e. tritium and deuterium over many operation hours to guarantee safety and availability of the future reactor. In our studies we use ultraviolet femtosecond laser pulses to analyze tungsten (W) tiles that were exposed to a deuterium plasma in the linear plasma device PSI-2, which mimics conditions at the first wall. A high-resolution spectrometer is used to detect the Balmer-[Formula: see text] transition of the surface from implanted hydrogen isotopes (H and D). We use Calibration Free CF-LIBS to quantify the amount of deuterium stored in W. This proof-of-principle study shows the applicability of femtosecond lasers for the detection of low deuterium concentration as present in first wall material of prevailing fusion experiments.

Metal micro/nanostructure enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

This study used a femtosecond laser to ablate a Cu sample, forming a micro/nanostructural layer on the surface. And the effect of this structural layer on nanosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was discussed. Firstly, the effect of the micro/nanostructural layer on the intensity of laser-induced Cu plasma spectra was investigated. The micro/nanostructure could significantly enhance the spectral intensity of the Cu plasma by 82.5 times at 13.3 mJ laser energy. Secondly, the Cu plasma temperature and electron density were calculated. The micro/nanostructures could significantly increase Cu plasma temperature and electron density. Finally, the effect of micro/nanostructure surface on the spectral intensities of Pb and Cr elements in water was investigated for LIBS analysis. It was found that the detection limit of Pb and Cr trace metal elements in water was 1.85 ng/mL and 0.51 ng/mL at a lower laser energy (13.3 mJ), which was significantly better than other LIBS methods reported so far. The results show that the micro/nanostructure enhanced LIBS is a more sensitive method for detecting trace metal elements in the water.

BOINPYs: facile synthesis and photothermal properties triggered by photoinduced nonadiabatic decay

Photothermal agents (PTAs) represent a core component of photothermal therapy (PTT). However, the current photothermal dyes are almost derived from well-known chromophores such as porphyrins, cyanine, and BODIPYs, and the design of new chromophores as versatile building blocks for PTA is considerably challenging because of the complexity of the modulation of excited-states. Herein, we adopted the concept of photoinduced nonadiabatic decay (PIND) to develop a photothermal boron-containing indoline-3-one-pyridyl chromophore (viz. BOINPY) with a facile one-pot synthesis and high yields. BOINPY derivatives exhibited specific features that fully address the concerns related to the design of PTA. The behavior and mechanism of BOINPYs for generating heat through the conical intersection pathway, which is called PIND, have been well understood through theoretical calculations. After encapsulation into the F127 copolymer, BOINPY@F127 nanoparticles displayed efficient photothermal conversion and performed well in the treatment of solid tumors upon light irradiation with good biocompatibility. This study provides useful theoretical guidance and concrete photothermal chromophores, which offer a versatile strategy embedding tunable properties for the development of diverse high-performance PTA.

Modeling of Liquid Hydrogen Tank Cooled with Para-Orthohydrogen Conversion

With the accelerating development of liquid-hydrogen storage facilities, the problem of boil-off hydrogen losses becomes very important. A promising method to reduce these losses is to utilize the endothermic para-orthohydrogen conversion of vented hydrogen, which can effectively decrease heat loads on a hydrogen tank. To model such a process, a hybrid computational model has been developed, based on the application of computational fluid dynamics for an ullage space, where knowledge of thermal stratification is important, and reduced-order models for other system elements. The simulation results for a spheroidal tank in selected conditions indicated a 10–25% reduction of boil-off losses due to cooling produced by vented hydrogen undergoing para-ortho-conversion.

The ab initio potential energy curves of atom pairs and transport properties of high-temperature vapors of Cu and Si and their mixtures with He, Ar, and Xe gases

The potential energy curves (PECs) for the homonuclear He-He, Ar-Ar, Cu-Cu, and Si-Si dimers, as well as heteronuclear Cu-He, Cu-Ar, Cu-Xe, Si-He, Si-Ar, and Si-Xe dimers, are obtained in quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations. It is shown that the QMC method provides the PECs with an accuracy comparable with that of the state-of-the-art coupled cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples corrections [CCSD(T)] calculations. The QMC data are approximated by the Morse long range (MLR) and (12-6) Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials. The MLR and LJ potentials are used to calculate the deflection angles in binary collisions of corresponding atom pairs and transport coefficients of Cu and Si vapors and their mixtures with He, Ar, and Xe gases in the range of temperature from 100 K to 10 000 K. It is shown that the use of the LJ potentials introduces significant errors in the transport coefficients of high-temperature vapors and gas mixtures. The mixtures with heavy noble gases demonstrate anomalous behavior when the viscosity and thermal conductivity can be larger than that of the corresponding pure substances. In the mixtures with helium, the thermal diffusion factor is found to be unusually large. The calculated viscosity and diffusivity are used to determine parameters of the variable hard sphere and variable soft sphere molecular models as well as parameters of the power-law approximations for the transport coefficients. The results obtained in the present work include all information required for kinetic or continuum simulations of dilute Cu and Si vapors and their mixtures with He, Ar, and Xe gases.

Computational design of novel MAX phase alloys as potential hydrogen storage media combining first principles and cluster expansion methods

Finding a suitable material for hydrogen storage under ambient atmospheric conditions is challenging for material scientists and chemists. In this work, using a first principles based cluster expansion approach, the hydrogen storage capacity of the Ti₂AC (A = Al, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) MAX phase and its alloys was studied. We found that hydrogen is energetically stable in Ti-A layers in which the tetrahedral site consisting of one A atom and three Ti atoms is energetically more favorable for hydrogen adsorption than other sites in the Ti-A layer. Ti₂CuC has the highest hydrogen adsorption energy than other Ti₂AC phases. We find that the 83.33% Cu doped Ti₂Al_xCu_1-xC alloy structure is both energetically and dynamically stable and can store 3.66 wt% hydrogen under ambient atmospheric conditions, which is higher than that stored by both Ti₂AlC and Ti₂CuC phases. These findings indicate that the hydrogen capacity of the MAX phase can be significantly improved by doping an appropriate atom species.

Solubility of palbociclib in supercritical carbon dioxide from experimental measurement and Peng-Robinson equation of state

Palbociclib is a poorly water-soluble medicine which acts against metastatic breast cancer cells. Among various techniques to improve the solubility of this medicine, applying supercritical technologies to produce micro- and nano-sized particles is a possible option. For this purpose, extraction of solubility data is required. In this research, the solubility of palbociclib in supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO₂) at different equilibrium conditions was measured at temperatures between 308 and 338 K and pressures within 12-27 MPa, for the first time. The minimum and maximum solubility data were found to be 8.1 × 10^-7 (at 338 K and 12 MPa) and 2.03 × 10^-5 (at 338 K and 27 MPa), respectively. Thereafter, two sets of models, including ten semi-empirical equations and three Peng-Robinson (PR) based integrated models were used to correlate the experimental solubility data. Bian's model and PR equation of state using van der Waals mixing rules (PR + vdW) showed better accuracy among the examined semi-empirical and integrated models, respectively. Furthermore, the self-consistency of the obtained data was confirmed using two distinct semi-empirical models. At last, the total and vaporization enthalpies of palbociclib solubility in ScCO₂ were calculated from correlation results of semi-empirical equations and estimated to be 40.41 and 52.67 kJ/mol, respectively.

Towards frustration in Eu(II) Archimedean tessellations

Self-assembly of trans-{EuI₂} nodes and ditopic ligands leads to isoreticular 2D frameworks featuring a rare, non-kagome Archimedean tessellation. The topology and intra-layer Eu(II)-Eu(II) antiferromagnetic interactions provide the prerequisites for geometrical spin frustration, which, due to the spin state degeneracy, is key for novel phenomena such as enhanced magnetic refrigeration.

Analytical potential energy surface and dynamics for the OH + CH3OH reaction

Using as functional form a combination of valence bond and mechanic molecular terms a new full-dimensional potential energy surface was developed for the title reaction, named PES-2022, which was fitted to high-level ab initio calculations at the coupled-cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples-F12 explicitly correlated level on a representative number of points describing the reactive system. This surface simultaneously describes the two reaction channels, hydrogen abstraction from the methyl group [(R1) path] and from the alcohol group [(R2) path] of methanol to form water. PES-2022 is a smooth and continuous surface, which reasonably describes the topology of this reactive system from reactants to products, including the intermediate complexes present in the system. Based on PES-2022 an exhaustive dynamics study was performed using quasi-classical trajectory calculations under two different initial conditions: at a fixed room temperature, for direct comparison with the experimental evidence and at different collision energies, to analyze possible mechanisms of reaction. In the first case, the available energy was mostly deposited as water vibrational energy, with the vibrational population inverted in the stretching modes and not inverted in the bending modes, reproducing the experimental evidence. In the second case, the analysis of different dynamics magnitudes (excitation functions, product energy partitioning, and product scattering distributions), allows us to suggest different mechanisms for both (R1) and (R2) paths: a direct mechanism for the (R2) path vs an indirect one, related with "nearly trapped" trajectories in the intermediate complexes, for the (R1) path.

Mechanistic Insights into the Oxidative Degradation of Formic and Oxalic Acids with Ozone and OH Radical. A Computational Rationale

Gas-phase and aqueous oxidations of formic and oxalic acids with ozone and OH radicals have been thoroughly examined by DFT methods. Such acids are not only important feedstocks for the iterative construction of other organic compounds but also final products generated by mineralization and advanced oxidation of higher organics. Our computational simulation unravels both common and distinctive reaction channels, albeit consistent with known H atom abstraction pathways and formation of hydropolyoxide derivatives. Notably, reactions with neutral ozone and OH radical proceed through low-energy concerted mechanisms involving asynchronous transition structures. For formic acid, carbonylic H-abstraction appears to be more favorable than the dissociative abstraction of the acid proton. Formation of long oxygen chains does not cause a significant energy penalty and highly oxygenated products are stable enough, even if subsequent decomposition releases environmentally benign side substances like O₂ and H₂O.
