Ordered anion adlayers on metal electrode surfaces

Coexistence of multiple conformations in cysteamine monolayers on Au(111)

The structural organization, catalytic function, and electronic properties of cysteamine monolayers on Au(111) have been addressed comprehensively by voltammetry, in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in anaerobic environment, and a priori molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and STM image simulation. Two sets of voltammetric signals are observed. One peak at -(0.65-0.70) V (SCE) is caused by reductive desorption of cysteamine. The other signal, at -(0.25-0.40) V consists of a peak doublet. The pH dependence of the latter suggests that the origin is catalytic dihydrogen evolution. The doublet feature is indicative of two distinct cysteamine configurations. Cysteamine monolayer formation from initial nucleation to a highly ordered phase has been successfully observed in real time using oxygen-free in situ STM. Random cellular patterns, disordered adlayer formation accompanied by high step edge mobility, and ultimately a highly ordered (square root 3 x 4) R30 degrees lattice are observed sequentially. Pits are formed due to enclosure of the mobile edges during the adsorption process. In the highly ordered cysteamine layer, each unit has two spots with apparent 0.6 A height difference in STM images. The coverage 5.7 +/- 0.1 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2) determined by voltammetry supports that the spots represent two individual cysteamine molecules. A priori MD and density functional simulations hold other clues to the image interpretation and indicate that the NH(3)(+) groups dominate the tunneling contrast. A wide range of interface structures, showing variations in the sulfur binding site and orientation, gauche and trans conformers, and especially hydrogen-bonding interactions, are examined, from which it is concluded that the adsorbate structure is controlled by interactions with the solvent rather than with the substrate.

Nitrate Adsorption and Reduction on Cu(100) in Acidic Solution

Nitrate adsorption and reduction on Cu(100) in acidic solution is studied by electrochemical methods, in situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM), surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Electrochemical results show that reduction of nitrate starts at -0.3 V vs Ag/AgCl and reaches maximum value at -0.58 V. Over the entire potential region interrogated adlayers composed of nitrate, nitrite, or other intermediates are observed by using in situ STM. From the open-circuit potential (OCP) to -0.22 V vs Ag|AgCl, the nitrate ion is dominant and forms a (2 x 2) adlattice on the Cu(100) surface while nitrate forms a dominantly c(2 x 2) structure from -0.25 to -0.36 V. The interconversion between the nitrate and nitrite adlattices is observed. DFT calculations indicate that both nitrate and nitrite are twofold coordinated to the Cu(100) surface.

Self-assembled monolayer of organic iodine on a Au surface for attachment of redox-active metal clusters

The attachment of a bifunctional iodo-organo-phosphinate compound to gold (Au) surfaces via chemisorption of the iodine atom is described and used to chelate a redox-active metal cluster via the phosphinate group. XPS, AFM, and electrochemical measurements show that (4-iodo-phenyl)phenyl phosphinic acid (IPPA) forms a tightly bound self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on Au surfaces. The surface coverage of an IPPA monolayer on Au was quantified by an electrochemical method and found to be 0.40 +/- 0.03 nmol/cm2, roughly corresponding to 0.4 monolayers. We show that the Au/IPPA SAM, but not the underivatized Au, adsorbs Mn4O4(Ph2PO2)6 from solution by a phosphinate exchange reaction to yield Au/IPPA/Mn4O4(Ph2PO2)5 SAM. The resulting SAM is firmly bound and not removed by sonication, as confirmed by manganese XPS (Mn 2p1/2) and by AFM. Electrochemistry confirms that Mn4O4(Ph2PO2)6 is anchored on the Au/IPPA surface and that redox chemistry can be mediated between the electrode and the surface-attached complex. Mn4O4(Ph2PO2)6 contains the reactive Mn4O46+ cubane core, a redox-active bioinspired catalyst.

Electrosynthetic reduction of 1-iodoadamantane forming 1,1'-biadamantane and adamantane in aprotic solvents: insonation switches the mechanism from dimerisation to exclusive monomer formation

The combination of ultrasound and electrochemistry -sonoelectrochemistry can produce a variety of effects within an electrochemical system including enhanced mass transport, in situ cleaning of an electrode surface, diminution of the diffusion layer, and possible induction of new reactions by sonochemical enhancement of follow-up reactions post-electron transfer. Herein, we show that ultrasound provides a useful extra dimension to electrosynthesis via a switch in the sonoelectroorganic mechanism in which dimerisation is disfavoured by virtue of convective mixing promoted by insonation. Under 'normal' voltammetric conditions the reduction of 1-iodoadamantane at a silver cathode in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and acetonitrile (ACN) involves a single electron forming a mixture of monomeric and dimeric products; 58%/THF, 50%/ACN adamantane and 39%/THF, 50%/ACN 1,1'-biadamantane, respectively. However, under the conditions of insonation using a 10 kHz transducer, a single product is formed exclusively; 93%/THF, 96%/ACN adamantane. The effect of insonation upon the voltammetry at a silver macroelectrode is shown and compared to that under silent conditions. In addition, the previously observed characteristic series of oxidation and adsorption peaks following reduction of 1-iodoadamantane are reduced in magnitude under insonation. Overall, this work shows that the effect of insonation can switch the mechanism of follow-up chemical processes - favoring the formation of a monomer.

Two-dimensional crystal growth from undersaturated solutions

The solubility of a substance is commonly understood as the minimum concentration necessary for the condensation of a solid phase from solution. Here we report the nucleation and growth of ionic compounds from aqueous concentrations on the order of 0.1 times the solubility. The condensation is catalyzed by a foreign substrate, and the new phase grows as a crystalline monolayer. Undersaturated growth is observed only in cases where the dissolved compound is isomorphic with the substrate and the interaction strength between a dissolved-ion/substrate-ion pair exceeds that between the two dissolved ions. These results are consistent with a simple model in which favorable ion-surface interactions lead to ion enrichment and supersaturation in the two-dimensional interfacial zone.

Epitaxial supramolecular assembly of fullerenes formed by using a coronene template on a Au(111) surface in solution

Characteristic properties of the coronene layer formed on Au(111) for the epitaxial growth of various fullerenes are described. The electrochemical behavior of the coronene adlayer prepared by immersing a Au(111) substrate into a benzene solution containing coronene was investigated in 0.1 M HClO4. The as-prepared coronene adlayer on Au(111) revealed a well-defined (4 x 4) structure. Structural changes of the array of coronene molecules induced by potential manipulation were clearly observed by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Supramolecularly assembled layers of fullerenes such as C60, C70, C60-C60 dumbbell dimer (C120), C60-C70 cross-dimer (C130), and C60 triangle trimer (C180) were formed on the well-defined coronene adlayer on the Au(111) surface by immersing the coronene-adsorbed Au(111) substrate into benzene solutions containing those molecules. The adlayers thus prepared were characterized by comparison with those which were directly attached to the Au(111) surface. The C60 molecules formed a honeycomb array with an internal structure in each C60 cage on the coronene adlayer, whereas C70 molecules were one-dimensionally arranged with the same orientations. The dimers, C120 and C130 molecules, formed an identical structure with c(11 x 4 radical3)rect symmetry. For the C130 cross-dimer molecule, C60 and C70 cages were clearly recognized at the molecular level. It was difficult to identify the adlayer of the C180 molecule directly attached to Au(111); however, individual C180 molecules could be recognized on the coronene-modified Au(111) surface. Thus, the adlayer structures of those fullerenes were strongly influenced by the underlying coronene adlayer, suggesting that the insertion of a coronene adlayer plays an important role in the formation of supramolecular assemblies of fullerenes.

X-ray diffraction and STM study of reactive surfaces under electrochemical control: Cl and I on Cu(100)

The surface structure of Cu(100) modified by chloride and iodide has been studied in an electrochemical environment by means of in-situ scanning tunneling microscopy in combination with in-situ surface X-ray diffraction with a particular focus on adsorbate and potential dependent surface relaxation phenomena. For positive potentials close to the on-set of the copper dissolution reaction, the X-ray data disclose an extraordinarily large Cu-Cl bond length of 2.61 A for the c(2 x 2)-Cl phase. This finding points to a largely ionic character of the Cu-Cl interaction at the Cu(100) surface, with chloride particles likely to retain their full charge upon adsorption. Together with the positive surface charging at these high potentials, this ionic Cu-Cl bond drives the observed 2.2% outward relaxation between the first two copper layers. These results indicate that the bond between the first and the second copper layer is significantly weakened which appears as the crucial prerequisite for the high surface mobility of copper-chloride species under electrochemical annealing conditions at these high potentials. With 2.51 A the Cu-I bond is 4% shorter than the Cu-Cl bond implying that the nature of the Cu-I bond is mainly covalent. Accordingly, we observe a significant inward relaxation of the top Cu layers upon substituting chloride by iodide at the same electrode potential, which suggests that the iodide adsorption involves charge transfer from the halide to the copper substrate.

Supramolecular hydrophobic-hydrophilic nanopatterns at electrified interfaces

We have developed hydrophobic-hydrophilic nanopatterns at electrified surfaces via the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules. For this purpose, we selected 5-hexadecyloxy isophthalic acid: this neutral amphiphile forms hydrogen-bonded rows that are commensurate with the Au(111) surface. The alkyl chains are interdigitated. The molecular organization of these nanopatterns depends strongly on the substrate potential, which reveals the hierarchical nature of the assembly. The new hydrophobic-hydrophilic nanopatterns are of special interest as templates for the formation of nanostructures of higher complexity.

Pb deposition on I-coated Au(111). UHV-EC and EC-STM studies

This article concerns the growth of an atomic layer of Pb on the Au(111)( radical3 x radical3)R30 degrees -I structure. The importance of this study lies in the use of Pb underpotential deposition (UPD) as a sacrificial layer in surface-limited redox replacement (SLRR). SLRR reactions are being applied in the formation of metal nanofilms via electrochemical atomic layer deposition (ALD). Pb UPD is a surface-limited reaction, and if it is placed in a solution of ions of a more noble metal, redox replacement can occur, but limited by the amount of Pb present. Pb UPD is a candidate for use as a sacrificial layer for replacement by any more noble element. It has been used by this group for both Cu and Pt nanofilm formation using electrochemical ALD. The I atom layer was intended to facilitate electrochemical annealing during nanofilm growth. Two distinctly different Pb atomic layer structures are reported, studied using in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with an electrochemical flow cell and ultrahigh vacuum surface analysis combined directly with electrochemical reactions (UHV-EC). Starting with the initial Au(111)( radical3 x radical3)R30 degrees -I, 1/3 monolayer of I on the Au(111) surface, Pb deposition began at approximately 0.1 V. The first Pb UPD structure was observed just below -0.2 V and displayed a (2 x radical3)-rect unit cell, for a structure composed of 1/4 monolayer each of Pb and I. The I atoms fit in Pb 4-fold sites, on the Au(111) surface. The structure was present in domains rotated by 120 degrees. Deposition to -0.4 V resulted in complete loss of the I atoms and formation of a Pb monolayer on the Au(111), which produced a Moiré pattern, due to the Pb and Au lattice mismatch. These structures represent two well-defined starting points for the growth of nanofilms of other more noble elements. It is apparent from these studies that the adsorption of I- on Pb is weak, and it will rinse away. If Pb is used as a sacrificial metal in an electrochemical ALD cycle and adsorbed I atoms are employed for electrochemical annealing, I atoms will need to be applied each cycle.

Formation of supramolecular nanobelt arrays consisting of cobalt(II) "picket-fence" porphyrin on Au surfaces

Adlayers of cobalt(II) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(alpha,alpha,alpha,alpha-2-pivalamidophenyl)porphyrin (CoTpivPP) were prepared by immersing either Au(111) or Au(100) substrate in a benzene solution containing CoTpivPP molecules, and they were investigated in 0.1 M HClO4 and 0.1 M H2SO4 by cyclic voltammetry and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The adlayer structure and electrochemical properties of CoTpivPP are compared to those of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine cobalt(II) (CoTPP). Characteristic nanobelt arrays consisting of CoTpivPP molecules were produced on both Au(111) and Au(100) surfaces. The stability of the nanobelt arrays was controlled by manipulating the electrode potential. On the other hand, the formation of nanobelt arrays consisting of O2-adducted CoTpivPP molecules depended upon the crystallographic orientation of Au. The state of O2 trapped in the cavity of CoTpivPP was distinctly observed in STM images as a bright spot in the nanobelt array formed on reconstructed Au(100)-(hex) surface, but not on Au(111) surface. This result suggests that the arrangement of underlying Au atoms plays an important role in the formation of nanobelt arrays with the sixth ligand coordination.

Electrochemical control of the structure of two-dimensional supramolecular organization consisting of phthalocyanine and porphyrin on a gold single-crystal surface

Two-component adlayers consisting of cobalt(II) phthalocyanine (CoPc) and a metalloporphyrin such as 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine copper(II) (CuTPP), 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethyl-21H,23H-porphine copper(II) (CuOEP), or 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine cobalt(II) (CoTPP) were prepared by immersing either an Au(111) or Au(100) substrate in a benzene solution containing those molecules. The mixed adlayers thus prepared were investigated in 0.1 M HClO4 by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The composition of the mixed adlayer consisting of CoPc and CuTPP molecules was found to vary with immersion time. CoPc molecules displaced CuTPP molecules during the modification process with increasing immersion time, and the CuTPP molecules were completely displaced by CoPc molecules in the mixed solution after a prolonged modification time, during which the underlying Au(100) substrate underwent phase transition from the reconstructed (hex) lattice to the unreconstructed (1 x 1) lattice. The two-component adlayer of CoPc and CuTPP was found to form a supramolecular adlayer with the constituent molecules arranged alternately on Au(100)-(hex). The striped structure was stable on Au(100)-(hex) at or near the open circuit potential (OCP), whereas the mixed adlayer was disordered on Au(100)-(1 x 1) at potentials more positive than OCP, where the phase transition of the arrangement of underlying Au atoms (i.e., the lifting of reconstruction) was induced electrochemically. A similar two-component supramolecular adlayer consisting of CoPc and CuTPP was formed on Au(111). A highly ordered, compositionally disordered adlayer of CoTPP and CuTPP was formed on Au(100)-(hex), suggesting that the adlayer structure is independent of the coordinated central metal ion for the formation of supramolecular nanostructures composed of those molecules. A supramolecular organization of CoPc and CuOEP was also found on Au(111). The surface mobility and the molecular reorganization of CoPc and CuOEP on Au(111) were tuned by modulation of the electrode potential. It is concluded that molecular assemblies of the two-component structure consisting of phthalocyanine and porphyrin were controlled not only by the crystallographic orientation of Au but also by the modulation of electrochemical potential.

In situ EC-STM studies of MPS, SPS, and chloride on Cu100: structural studies of accelerators for dual damascene electrodeposition

Electrochemical, differential capacitance, and in situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM) methods are used to examine the interaction of bis(3-sulfopropyl)-disulfide (SPS) and mercaptopropylsulfonic acid (MPS) with Cu(100) surfaces both in the absence and presence of chloride. Both electrochemical and differential capacitance results are weakly perturbed by the addition of either MPS or SPS in the potential region between -0.2 and -0.5 V versus Ag/AgCl relative to the additive-free case. EC-STM images obtained from solutions of MPS alone exhibit a c(2 x 2) adlattice whereas those from SPS alone yield only the (1 x 1) structure. In the presence of Cl-, both adsorbates evince only a c(2 x 2) adlattice on the Cu(100) surface. The desorption potential of these structure is identical to that found with Cl- alone. These results show that neither MPS nor SPS adsorbs strongly on Cu(100) in the presence of Cl-.

Classification of hexagonal adlayer arrangements by means of collective geometrical properties

Unequal-sphere packing model is applied for the simulation of large number of hexagonal adlayer structures with surface coverage between theta=13 and theta=1 on the hexagonal substrate, with atomic radius of the adsorbate and substrate atoms as the only input. Each structure is characterized with respect to collective adlayer properties: the average adlayer height and the adlayer roughness. The distribution of hexagonal arrangements is presented in a special plot, which can be used for identification and characterization of hexagonal adlayers of different surface coverages and atomic registries. The most likely structures are related to the extreme values of our model parameters. The usefulness of this methodology is successfully demonstrated by comparison with some real adsorbate-substrate systems, i.e., halogens and rare gases adsorbed on (111) surface. Besides the agreement with experimental results, our model offers new insight into the formation of atomic adlayers and detailed analysis of the atomic registry. We believe that our approach will be of use for identification of probable structures among the large number of combinatorial possibilities in theoretical studies and for better interpretation of experimental results (i.e., scanning-tunneling microscopy images of atomic adlayers).

Potential energy landscape of monolayer-surface systems governed by repulsive lateral interactions: the case of (3 x 3)-I-Pt(111)

Combined density functional theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo (MC) approach is applied to study the potential energy landscape of four iodine atoms adsorbed on the Pt(111) surface in a (3 x 3) unit cell. Three critical points were identified: (3 x 3)-sym and (3 x 3)-asym, corresponding to structures well known from experimental studies, while the third one (3 x 3)-zigzag is a new structure not reported before. An interaction model fitted to DFT calculations allows us to explain the difference between arrangements of iodine monolayer in vacuum, air, and solution environments as a result of different repulsion regimes.

Directed Assembly and Separation of Self-Assembled Monolayers via Electrochemical Processing

Separated domains of 1-dodecanethiolate were fabricated via solution displacement of preformed 1-adamantanethiolate self-assembled monolayers on Au{111}. Subsequently, the 1-adamantanethiolate domains were desorbed selectively, and the substrate was exposed to a 1-octanethiol solution, creating artificially separated self-assembled monolayers of 1-dodecanethiolate and 1-octanethiolate. The molecular order of each lattice type and the apparent height differences imaged with scanning tunneling microscopy and the two distinct cathodic peaks observed with cyclic voltammetry indicated distinct separated domains of each lattice type in the separated self-assembled monolayers. By manipulating the intermolecular interaction strengths of the patterned molecules, we are able to control the structure and properties of the separated self-assembled monolayers via the exploitation of competitive adsorption and the utilization of electrochemical processing, which can be extended to other self-assembly patterning techniques such as microdisplacement printing.

Fabricating and controlling molecular self-organization at solid surfaces: studies by scanning tunneling microscopy

This account presents a summary of recent work describing the control and fabrication of self-organized molecular adlayers on solid substrates. These results demonstrate that molecules, under appropriate conditions, will self-organize into well-ordered monolayers on various solid surfaces. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to probe the structure of these molecular architectures, it is possible to determine the surface quality to single molecule resolution. The surface structures can be controlled by external stimuli such as electrode potential and UV-light. The ability to control how these adlayers form is important for constructing surface molecular architectures with useful properties.

Adsorption of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium bromide on gold studied by liquid chromatography and flow adsorption microcalorimetry

Here, we report on a new aspect of the adsorption of Br- on the surface of gold. The adsorption of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C12TABr) from aqueous solutions onto macroporous gold particles was studied by continuous flow frontal analysis solid/liquid chromatography and flow adsorption microcalorimetry. The material balance and enthalpy balance of adsorption and the change in the solution pH were measured simultaneously. Initially, Br- is irreversibly bound to high-affinity surface sites counterbalanced by the adsorption of H+ from the aqueous phase. The surface speciation is accompanied by the formation of C12TAOH, which in turn results in a significant pH increase in the bulk solution. The net process was found to be strongly exothermic (-280 kJ.mol(-1)), which is indicative of the occurrence of chemisorption. The specific adsorption of Br- is followed by the reversible adsorption of C12TABr to produce a firmly bound monolayer in a head-to-surface arrangement (-53 kJ.mol(-1)). In a relatively narrow range of the surface coverage, various composite structures may develop on the top layer and eventually transform to full-cylindrical surface aggregates. The surface aggregation was found to be reversible, with an enthalpy change of -11 kJ.mol(-1). The importance of the specific binding of Br- to the surface of gold was confirmed by measurement of the initial adsorption of NaBr on the microparticles. The initial adsorption was found to be irreversible, with an enthalpy change of approximately -240 kJ.mol(-1). This process involved the formation of an AuBr-/H+ electric double layer at the gold/water interface, accompanied by a dramatic increase in the solution pH due to the release of a copious amount of OH- in the bulk liquid phase.

Assembled monolayers of Mo3S44+ clusters on well-defined surfaces

A class of inorganic monolayers formed by assembling the molybdenum-sulfur cluster, Mo3S4(4+), onto a well-defined Au(111) surface is presented. The monolayers have been comprehensively characterized by electrochemistry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (in situ STM). The voltammetric data show strong reductive and oxidative desorption signals from Au-S interactions, supported by the presence of both S and Mo signals in XPS. In situ STM shows many small pits in the dense adlayers uniformly spread over the surface, which is a typical feature of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols. The density of the pits is ca. 23 (+/-5)% and is significantly higher than for straight-chain alkanethiol SAMs with a single -SH group. The pit shapes are irregular, suggesting multiple Au-S interactions from Mo3S4(4+). High resolution images disclose bright round spots of ca. 8 A diameter representing individual molecules in the SAM. This is the first example of in situ monolayer formation by a metal-chalcogenide cluster directly anchored onto the gold surface through core ligands and offers a simple way to prepare a new class of functionalized inorganic monolayers.

Unequal-Sphere Packing Model for Simulation of the Uniaxially Compressed Iodine Adlayer on Au(111)

A simple unequal-sphere packing (USP) model, based on pure geometrical principles, was applied to study the centered-rectangular iodine c(px radical3)R30 degrees adlayer on the Au(111) surface, well-known from surface X-ray structure (SXS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments. To reproduce the exact patterns observed in experiments, two selective conditions-minimum average adsorbate height and minimum adlayer roughness-were imposed. As a result, a series of adlayer patterns with c(px radical3)R30 degrees symmetry (2.3 < p < 3), with precise structural details, including atomic registry and identification of the p-bisector as the most likely trajectory for the iodine adatom movement during the so-called uniaxial compression phenomenon, were identified. In addition, using the same model, the difference between the iodine adlayer arranged in hexagonal and centered-rectangular c(px radical3)R30 degrees patterns, as in the case of Pt(111) and Au(111) surfaces, was investigated. Qualitative and quantitative comparison shows that iodine adatoms in these two arrangements differ significantly in atomic registry, distance from the substrate, and the adlayer corrugation. Our findings could be of special interest in the study of the nature of the iodine adatom bonding to different substrates (i.e., Au vs Pt).

Potential-Dependent Adsorption and Orientation of a Small Zwitterion: p-Aminobenzoic Acid on Ag(111)

We report on the potential-dependent behavior of the zwitterionic molecule p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) at a Ag(111) electrode surface. Infrared-visible sum frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG) in tandem with electrochemical capacitance and CV measurements are used to study the effects of applied potential on the adsorption and orientation of PABA. Changes in the SFG signal indicate that PABA changes orientation in response to the charge on the electrode surface, orienting one way positive of the potential of zero charge (pzc) and oppositely negative of the pzc. At positive potentials, a phase change is observed associated with the formation of a condensed layer. PABA is observed to remain on the surface at all potentials examined. These results show that the orientation of small molecules with large dipoles, like zwitterions, can be controlled by applied potential.

Role of the anion in the underpotential deposition of cadmium on a Rh(111) electrode: probed by voltammetry and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy

In situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were employed to examine the underpotential deposition (UPD) of cadmium on a rhodium(111) electrode in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. The (bi)sulfate and chloride anions in the electrolytes played a main role in controlling the number and arrangement of Cd adatoms. Deposition of Cd along with hydrogen adsorption occurred near 0.1 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode) in either 0.05 M H2SO4 or 0.1 M HCl containing 1 mM Cd(ClO4)2. These coupled processes resulted in an erroneous coverage of Cd adatoms. The process of Cd deposition shifted positively to 0.3 V and thus separated from that of hydrogen in 0.05 M H2SO4 containing 0.5 M Cd2+. The amount of charge (80 microC/cm2) for Cd deposition in 0.5 M Cd2+ implied a coverage of 0.17 for the Cd adatoms, which agreed with in situ STM results. Regardless of [Cd2+], in situ STM imaging revealed a highly ordered Rh(111)-(6 x 6)-6Cd + HSO4- or SO42- structure in sulfuric acid,. In hydrochloric acid, in situ STM discerned a (2 x 2)-Cd + Cl structure at potentials where Cd deposition commenced. STM atomic resolution showed roughly one-quarter of a monolayer of Cd adatoms were deposited, ca. 50% more than in sulfuric acid. Dynamic in situ STM imaging showed potential dependent, reversible transformations between the (6 x 6) Cd adlattices and (square root 3 x square root 7)-(bi)sulfate structure, and between (2 x 2) and (square root 7 x square root 7)R19.1 degrees -Cl structures. The fact that different Cd structures observed in H2SO4 and HCl entailed the involvement of anions in Cd deposition, i.e. (bi)sulfate and chloride anions were codeposited with Cd adatoms on Rh(111).

Density functional study of the interaction of chlorine atom with small neutral and charged silver clusters

Chlorine adsorption on small neutral, anionic, and cationic silver clusters Ag(n) (n=2-7) has been studied using the PW91PW91 density functional method. It was found that the adsorption of chlorine on the lowest-energy bare clusters does not always produce the lowest-energy complexes. In addition, the binding of chlorine can greatly change the geometries of the silver clusters in some cases. Among various possible adsorption sites, bridge site is energetically preferred for the neutral Ag(n) while top site is energetically more preferred for the anionic Ag(n) with n< or =6. For cationic clusters, adsorptions on bridge and face sites have similar binding energies, which are much larger than those on top sites. Natural bond orbital analyses show that irrespective of charge state, electrons always transfer from silver atoms to adsorbate and silver acts like alkali metals in the interaction with chlorine atom. Significant odd-even alternation patterns in the properties of the complexes have been observed: Even-electron clusters often have higher ionization energies, lower electron affinities, and higher dissociation energies than their odd-electron neighbors. It was also found that chlorine atoms bind more strongly with odd-electron bare clusters than with even-electron bare clusters. These patterns reveal that even-electron clusters are more stable than odd-electron clusters.
