Self-healing polymer coatings based on crosslinked metallosupramolecular copolymers

Self-healing coating based on metallopolymers are prepared and fully characterized. Iron bisterpyridine complexes are incorporated into a polymer network based on methacrylates, resulting in self-healing properties of these materials. Moreover, the influence of the comonomers on the thermal properties is studied in detail.

Large two-photon absorption of terpyridine-based quadrupolar derivatives: towards their applications in optical limiting and biological imaging

Developing organic chromophores with large two-photon absorption (TPA) in both organic solvents and aqueous media is crucial owing to their applications in solid-state photonic devices and biological imaging. Herein, a series of novel terpyridine-based quadrupolar derivatives have been synthesized. The influences of electron-donating group, type of conjugated bridge, as well as solvent polarity on the molecular TPA properties have been investigated in detail. In contrast to the case in organic solvents, bis(thienyl)-benzothiadiazole as a rigid conjugated bridge will completely quench molecular two-photon emission in aqueous media. However, the combination of alkylcarbazole as the donor and bis(styryl)benzene as a conjugation bridge can enlarge molecular TPA cross-sections in both organic solvent and aqueous media. The reasonable two-photon emission brightness for the organic nanoparticles of chromophores 3-5 in the aqueous media, prepared by the reprecipitation method, enables them to be used as probes for in vivo biological imaging.

Cooperative supramolecular polymerization: comparison of different models applied on the self-assembly of bis(merocyanine) dyes

Three new molecular building blocks 1 a-c for supramolecular polymerization are described that feature two dipolar merocyanine dyes tethered by p-xylylene spacers. Concentration- and temperature-dependent UV/Vis spectroscopy in chloroform combined with dynamic light scattering, capillary viscosimetry and atomic force microscopy investigations were applied to elucidate the mechanistic features of the self-assembly of these strongly dipolar dyes. Our detailed studies reveal that the self-assembly is very pronounced for bis(merocyanines) 1 a,b bearing linear alkyl chains, but completely absent for bis(merocyanine) 1 c bearing sterically more bulky ethylhexyl substituents. Both temperature- and concentration-dependent UV/Vis data provide unambiguous evidence for a cooperative self-assembly process for bis(merocyanines) 1 a,b, which was analyzed in detail by the Meijer-Schenning-Van-der-Schoot model (applicable to temperature-dependent data) and by the Goldstein-Stryer model (applicable to concentration-dependent data). By combining both methods all parameters of interest to understand the self-assembly process could be derived, including in particular the nucleus size (8-10 monomeric units), the cooperativity factor (ca. 0.006), and the nucleation and elongation constants of about 10(3) and 10(6)  M(-1) in chloroform at room temperature, respectively.

Light-triggered self-assembly of triarylamine-based nanospheres

Tailored triarylamine units modified with terpyridine ligands were coordinated to Zn(2+) ions and characterized as discrete dimeric entities. Interestingly, when these complexes were subsequently irradiated with simple visible light in chloroform, they readily self-assembled into monodisperse spheres with a mean diameter of 160 nm.

Synthesis of a glycopolymeric Pt(II) carrier and its induction of apoptosis in resistant cancer cells

Post-polymerization modification of a poly(pentafluorostyryl) backbone with β-d-galactose and a terpyridine platinum complex yields a well-defined material that represents the first example of a metal-conjugated glycopolymer. It reveals anti-proliferative activity, no detectable necrotic cytotoxicity, and efficiently induces apoptosis in both wild-type as well as resistant Nalm-6 leukemia cell lines.

Fluorometric sensor based on bisterpyridine metallopolymer: detection of cyanide and phosphates in water

A poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) decorated bis(terpyridine) zinc coordination polymer acts as an anion-responsive material in 100% aqueous solution. Depending on the binding and association constants to Zn(II), the addition of different anions leads to increased emission intensity and/or a shift of the emission wavelength. The sensor was addressed with a collection of common salts to survey the selectivity of the emission response. Phosphate and cyanide, representing the strongest anion binding to zinc(II), were detected even in the presence of other ions in tap water. Biologically relevant phosphates such as diphosphates and adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) also produced a strong response. Because the binding constants with Zn(II) are very high, anion concentrations in the range of 10(-6) to 10(-7) M are sufficient.

"ON-OFF" switching of europium complex luminescence coupled with a ligand redox process

A triarylamine-functionalized terpyridine ligand formed a highly coordinated complex with europium tris(β-diketonate), which displayed reversible ''ON-OFF'' luminescence switching coupled with a ligand redox process of triarylamine/triarylaminium cations.

The past decade has shown an exponential increase in synthetic methods, resulting in metal‐containing polymers, their characterization techniques, and their potential application into a variety of fields, including chemistry, medicine, biotechnology, and more.

Electrochromic properties of a metallo-supramolecular polymer derived from tetra(2-pyridyl-1,4-pyrazine) ligands integrated in thin multilayer films

The electrochromic behavior of iron complexes derived from tetra-2-pyridyl-1,4-pyrazine (TPPZ) and a hexacyanoferrate species in polyelectrolytic multilayer adsorbed films is described for the first time. This complex macromolecule was deposited onto indium-tin oxide (ITO) substrates via self-assembly, and the morphology of the modified electrodes was studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM), which indicated that the hybrid film containing the polyelectrolyte multilayer and the iron complex was highly homogeneous and was approximately 50 nm thick. The modified electrodes exhibited excellent electrochromic behavior with both intense and persistent coloration as well as a chromatic contrast of approximately 70%. In addition, this system achieved high electrochromic efficiency (over 70 cm(2) C(-1) at 630 nm) and a response time that could be measured in milliseconds. The electrode was cycled more than 10(3) times, indicating excellent stability.

Metal-containing polymers via electropolymerization

Electropolymerization represents a suitable and well-established approach for the assembly of polymer structures, in particular with regard to the formation of thin, insoluble films. Utilization of monomers that are functionalized with metal complex units allows the combination of structural and functional benefits of polymers and metal moieties. Since a broad range of both electropolymerizable monomers and metal complexes are available, various structures and, thus, applications are possible. Recent developments in the field of synthesis and potential applications of metal-functionalized polymers obtained via electropolymerization are presented, highlighting the significant advances in this field of research.

The marriage of terpyridines and inorganic nanoparticles: synthetic aspects, characterization techniques, and potential applications

The utilization of supramolecular chemistry, i.e., metal-to-ligand coordination, in the field of nanotechnology is evaluated with respect to 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine, as tridentate metal binding site. Stabilization as well as directed self-assembly of nanometer-sized materials into ordered arrays are the most widely studied targets of current research. Moreover, energy- and/or electron-transfer processes are enabled when redox-active terpyridine complexes are bound to (semi)conducting species (e.g., fullerenes, polyoxometalates)-thus, applications in nanoelectronics and catalysis are currently arising from these hybrid materials. Progress made in these fields, resulting from the marriage of terpyridines (as well as their metal complexes) and nanostructures, is summarized in this Review Article.

Ruthenium(II)-bis(4′-(4-ethynylphenyl)-2,2′:6′, 2″-terpyridine) — A versatile synthon in supramolecular chemistry. Synthesis and characterization

A homoleptic ethynyl-substituted ruthenium(II)-bisterpyridine complex representing a versatile synthon in supramolecular chemistry was synthesized and analyzed by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and X-ray diffractometry. Furthermore, its photophysical properties were detailed by UV/Vis absorption, emission and resonance Raman spectroscopy. In order to place the results obtained in the context of the vast family of ruthenium coordination compounds, two structurally related complexes were investigated accordingly. These reference compounds bear either no or an increased chromophore in the 4′-position. The spectroscopic investigations reveal a systematic bathochromic shift of the absorption and emission maximum upon increasing chromophore size. This bathochromic shift of the steady state spectra occurs hand in hand with increasing resonance Raman intensities upon excitation of the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transition. The latter feature is accompanied by an increased excitation delocalization over the chromophore in the 4′-position of the terpyridine. Thus, the results presented allow for a detailed investigation of the electronic effects of the ethynyl substituent on the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer states in the synthon for click reactions leading to coordination polymers.
