Abstract
pi-conjugated polymers have become an important class of materials for electronic devices. Design of these devices requires understanding such processes as photochemical reactions, spatial dynamics of photoexcitations, and energy and charge transport, which in turn involve complex coupled electron-vibrational dynamics. Here we study nonlinear photoexcitation dynamics in the polyene oligomers by using a quantum-chemical method suitable for the simulation of excited-state molecular dynamics in extended molecular systems with sizes up to hundreds of atoms. The method is based on the adiabatic propagation of the ground-state and transition single-electron density matrices along the trajectory. The simulations reveal formation of a self-localized vibronic excitation ("breather" or multiquanta bound state) with a typical period of 34 fs and allows us to identify specific slow and fast nuclear motions strongly coupled to the electronic degrees of freedom. The effect of chain imperfections and chemical defects on the dynamics is also investigated. A complementary two-dimensional analysis of corresponding transition density matrices provides an efficient way to monitor time-dependent real-space localization of the photoexcitation by identifying the underlying changes in charge densities and bond orders. Possible correlated electronic and vibrational spectroscopic signatures of photoexcited breathers are predicted, and generalizations to energy localization in complex macromolecules are discussed.

Abstract
Inorganic nanocrystals with well-defined shapes are important for understanding basic size-dependent scaling laws, and may be useful in a wide range of applications. Methods for controlling the shapes of inorganic nanocrystals are evolving rapidly. This paper will focus on how we currently control the shape of nanocrystals and this will be illustrated using CdSe and Co nanocrystals as examples for semiconductors and for metals. These materials show a more pronounced variation of fundamental properties with aspect ratio. However, to take advantage of these shape-dependent properties in possible applications, several challenges need to be overcome. Issues such as alignment, high quantum yield and photostability and precise control of three-dimensional structures need to be addressed. These challenges, as well as several potential applications, will be described briefly.

Abstract
Sub-ps three-pulse transient differential transmission spectroscopy using two excitation pulses is used to directly investigate the generation of charge carriers in ladder-type poly(para)phenyl in bulk film. The role of higher excited singlet states of both even and odd symmetry is examined and the dynamics of the major processes involved is described quantitatively. The charge generation efficiency is found to depend strongly on the delay between the two excitation pulses. This is explained by the interplay between internal conversion, excitation energy migration, and on-site vibronic relaxation.

Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) has been implicated as a signaling agent in numerous signal transduction pathways in mammalian cells. However, to date, no sensor for low concentrations (<10 microm) of H(2)O(2) has been identified. Using a functional proteomic approach, nuclear extracts from human umbilical vein endothelial cells were analyzed by two-dimensional PAGE with or without prior treatment with a low concentration of H(2)O(2). A protein doublet with a molecular mass of 39-41 kDa and a pI of approximately 5.0 was observed to be consistently altered by the treatment. Using proteolytic peptide mass fingerprinting, the protein was identified as heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein C1/C2, a nuclear restricted, pre-mRNA-binding protein. Upon two-dimensional PAGE, each heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein-C splice form was present as multiple spots because of differing levels of phosphorylation. Upon treatment with H(2)O(2), there was an increase in phosphorylation at 10-20 min, which partially reversed by 30 min. Subsequently, at 60 min after treatment, a population of unphosphorylated protein was transiently present. The effects were observed with as little as 1 microm H(2)O(2) and were maximal with 5-8 microm H(2)O(2). The H(2)O(2)-stimulated phosphorylation was inhibited by catalase, but not by the transcriptional inhibitor actinomycin D.

Abstract
We demonstrate that semiconductor nanorods can be used to fabricate readily processed and efficient hybrid solar cells together with polymers. By controlling nanorod length, we can change the distance on which electrons are transported directly through the thin film device. Tuning the band gap by altering the nanorod radius enabled us to optimize the overlap between the absorption spectrum of the cell and the solar emission spectrum. A photovoltaic device consisting of 7-nanometer by 60-nanometer CdSe nanorods and the conjugated polymer poly-3(hexylthiophene) was assembled from solution with an external quantum efficiency of over 54% and a monochromatic power conversion efficiency of 6.9% under 0.1 milliwatt per square centimeter illumination at 515 nanometers. Under Air Mass (A.M.) 1.5 Global solar conditions, we obtained a power conversion efficiency of 1.7%.

Abstract
Until now, photovoltaics--the conversion of sunlight to electrical power--has been dominated by solid-state junction devices, often made of silicon. But this dominance is now being challenged by the emergence of a new generation of photovoltaic cells, based, for example, on nanocrystalline materials and conducting polymer films. These offer the prospect of cheap fabrication together with other attractive features, such as flexibility. The phenomenal recent progress in fabricating and characterizing nanocrystalline materials has opened up whole new vistas of opportunity. Contrary to expectation, some of the new devices have strikingly high conversion efficiencies, which compete with those of conventional devices. Here I look into the historical background, and present status and development prospects for this new generation of photoelectrochemical cells.
