Surface Organometallic and Coordination Chemistry toward Single-Site Heterogeneous Catalysts: Strategies, Methods, Structures, and Activities

Dual reactor for in situ/operando fluorescent mode XAS studies of sample containing low-concentration 3d or 5d metal elements

Transition metal elements are the most important elements of heterogeneous catalysts used for chemical and energy transformations. Many of these catalysts are active at a temperature higher than 400 °C. For a catalyst containing a 3d or 5d metal element with a low concentration, typically their released fluorescence upon the K-edge or L-edge adsorption of X-rays is collected for the analysis of chemical and coordination environments of these elements. However, it is challenging to perform in situ/operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies of elements of low-energy absorption edges at a low concentration in a catalyst during catalysis at a temperature higher than about 450 °C. Here a unique reaction system consisting two reactors, called a dual reactor system, was designed for performing in situ or operando XAS studies of these elements of low-energy absorption edges in a catalyst at a low concentration during catalysis at a temperature higher than 450 °C in a fluorescent mode. This dual-reactor system contains a quartz reactor for preforming high-temperature catalysis up to 950 °C and a Kapton reactor remaining at a temperature up to 450 °C for collecting data in the same gas of catalysis. With this dual reactor, chemical and coordination environments of low-concentration metal elements with low-energy absorption edges such as the K-edge of 3d metals including Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu and L edge of 5d metals including W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, and Au can be examined through first performing catalysis at a temperature higher than 450 °C in the quartz reactor and then immediately flipping the catalyst in the same gas flow to the Kapton reactor remained up to 450 °C to collect data. The capability of this dual reactor was demonstrated by tracking the Mn K-edge of the MnO_x/Na₂WO₄ catalyst during activation in the temperature range of 300-900 °C and catalysis at 850 °C.

Predicting the DNP-SENS efficiency in reactive heterogeneous catalysts from hydrophilicity

Identification of surfaces at the molecular level has benefited from progress in dynamic nuclear polarization surface enhanced NMR spectroscopy (DNP SENS).

Identification of surfaces at the molecular level has benefited from progress in dynamic nuclear polarization surface enhanced NMR spectroscopy (DNP SENS). However, the technique is limited when using highly sensitive heterogeneous catalysts due to secondary reaction of surface organometallic fragments (SOMFs) with stable radical polarization agents. Here, we observe that in non-porous silica nanoparticles (NPs) (d_particle = 15 nm) some DNP enhanced NMR or SENS characterizations are possible, depending on the metal-loading of the SOMF and the type of SOMF substituents (methyl, isobutyl, neopentyl). This unexpected observation suggests that aggregation of the nanoparticles occurs in non-polar solvents (such as ortho-dichlorobenzene) leading to (partial) protection of the SOMF inside the interparticle space, thereby preventing reaction with bulky polarization agents. We discover that the DNP SENS efficiency is correlated with the hydrophilicity of the SOMF/support, which depends on the carbon and SOMF concentration. Nitrogen sorption measurements to determine the BET constant (C_BET) were performed. This constant allows us to predict the aggregation of silica nanoparticles and consequently the efficiency of DNP SENS. Under optimal conditions, C_BET > 60, we found signal enhancement factors of up to 30.

Entrapped Single Tungstate Site in Zeolite for Cooperative Catalysis of Olefin Metathesis with Brønsted Acid Site

Industrial olefin metathesis catalysts generally suffer from low reaction rates and require harsh reaction conditions for moderate activities. This is due to their inability to prevent metathesis active sites (MASs) from aggregation and their intrinsic poor adsorption and activation of olefin molecules. Here, isolated tungstate species as single molecular MASs are immobilized inside zeolite pores by Brønsted acid sites (BASs) on the inner surface. It is demonstrated that unoccupied BASs in atomic proximity to MASs enhance olefin adsorption and facilitate the formation of metallocycle intermediates in a stereospecific manner. Thus, effective cooperative catalysis takes place over the BAS-MAS pair inside the zeolite cavity. In consequence, for the cross-metathesis of ethene and trans-2-butene to propene, under mild reaction conditions, the propene production rate over WO _x/USY is ca. 7300 times that over the industrial WO₃/SiO₂-based catalyst. A propene yield up to 79% (80% selectivity) without observable deactivation was obtained over WO _x/USY for a wide range of reaction conditions.

Aerosol-Assisted Rapid Fabrication of a Heterogeneous Organopalladium Catalyst with Hierarchical Bimodal Pores

Heterogeneous organometallic catalysts with well-defined active sites and hierarchical pores hold tremendous promise for efficient and eco-friendly chemical processes. However, the simple and scalable preparation of these materials remains difficult to date, which has hampered a more broad application scope. Herein, we reported a low-cost, rapid, and scalable aerosol-assisted assembly approach for the synthesis of a well-defined PdDPP (PdCl₂(PPh₂(CH₂)₂))_ complex-containing benzene-bridged organosilica-based catalyst with a hierarchical bimodal micro-macroporous structure. This novel material was realized by using Pd(II) organometallic silane (Pd[PPh₂(CH₂)₂Si(OEt)₃]₂Cl₂) as the active species, organosilane 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl)benzene (Ph[Si(OEt)₃]₂) as the silicate scaffold and the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and the inorganic salt NaCl as the dual templates on a home-built aerosol spraying-instrument. Multiple techniques including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and solid-state NMR spectra revealed that the organopalladium complex with a well-defined molecular configuration of major trans model and minor cis model existed in the phenyl-functionalized silica material. As expected, it efficiently promoted a variety of important carbon-carbon cross-coupling transformations including Tsuji-Trost, Sonogashira, and Suzuki reactions in pure water without the assistance of any additives. In comparison with the homogeneous catalyst PdCl₂(PPh₂CH₃)₂, it even exhibited enhanced activity and selectivity in some cases owing to the unique confinement effect and the shape selectivity generated from the hierarchical porous structure. Meanwhile, it was easily recycled and reused eight times without the loss of its activity.

Exploiting the interactions between the ruthenium Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst and Al-modified mesoporous silica: the case of SBA15 vs. KCC-1

2^nd generation Hoveyda–Grubbs catalyst immobilized onto well-ordered 2D hexagonal (SBA15) and 3D fibrous (KCC-1) mesostructured silica displaying tetra-coordinated Al–H via Surface Organometallic Chemistry (SOMC).

Immobilization of the 2^nd generation Hoveyda–Grubbs catalyst HG-II onto well-ordered 2D hexagonal (SBA15) and 3D fibrous (KCC-1) mesostructured silica, which contained tetra-coordinated Al, has been investigated through the Surface Organometallic Chemistry (SOMC) methodology. The main interest of this study lies in the peculiarity of the silica supports, which display a well-defined tetrahedral aluminum hydride site displaying a strong Lewis acid character, [( Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> Si–O–Si Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> )( Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> Si–O–)₂Al–H]. The resulting supported Hoveyda–Grubbs catalysts have been fully characterized by advanced solid state characterization techniques (FT-IR, ¹H and ¹³C solid state NMR, DNP-SENS, EF-TEM…). Together with DFT calculations, the immobilization of HG-II does not occur through the formation of a covalent bond between the complex and the Al-modified mesoporous silica as expected, but through an Al···Cl–[Ru]-coordination. It is not surprising that in functionalized olefin metathesis of diethyldiallyl malonate, DEDAM (liquid phase), leaching of the catalyst is observed which is not the case in non-functionalized olefin metathesis of propene (gas phase). Besides, the results obtained in propene metathesis with HG-II immobilized either on SBA15 (d_pore = 6 nm) or KCC-1 (d_pore = 4 or 8 nm) highlight the importance of the accessibility of the catalytic site. Therefore, we demonstrate that KCC-1 is a promising and suitable 3D mesoporous support to overcome the diffusion of reactants into the porous network of heterogeneous catalysts.

Single rhodium atoms anchored in micropores for efficient transformation of methane under mild conditions

Catalytic transformation of CH₄ under a mild condition is significant for efficient utilization of shale gas under the circumstance of switching raw materials of chemical industries to shale gas. Here, we report the transformation of CH₄ to acetic acid and methanol through coupling of CH₄, CO and O₂ on single-site Rh₁O₅ anchored in microporous aluminosilicates in solution at ≤150 °C. The activity of these singly dispersed precious metal sites for production of organic oxygenates can reach about 0.10 acetic acid molecules on a Rh₁O₅ site per second at 150 °C with a selectivity of ~70% for production of acetic acid. It is higher than the activity of free Rh cations by >1000 times. Computational studies suggest that the first C-H bond of CH₄ is activated by Rh₁O₅ anchored on the wall of micropores of ZSM-5; the formed CH₃ then couples with CO and OH, to produce acetic acid over a low activation barrier.

Structural Characterization of Electron Donors in Ziegler-Natta Catalysts

Ziegler-Natta catalysis is a very important industrial process for the production of polyolefins. However, the catalysts are not well-understood at the molecular level. Yet, atomic-scale structural information is of pivotal importance for rational catalyst development. We applied a solid-state NMR/density functional theory tandem approach to gain detailed insight into the interactions between the catalysts' support, MgCl₂, and organic electron donors. Because of the heterogeneity of the samples, large line widths are observed in the carbon spectra. Despite this, good agreement between experimental and computational values was reached, and this shows that 1,3-diether based donors coordinate at (110) surface sites, while phthalates are less selective and coordinate at both (104) and (110) surface sites.

Chemoselective Hydrogenation with Supported Organoplatinum(IV) Catalyst on Zn(II)-Modified Silica

Well-defined organoplatinum(IV) sites were grafted on a Zn(II)-modified SiO₂ support via surface organometallic chemistry in toluene at room temperature. Solid-state spectroscopies including XAS, DRIFTS, DRUV-vis, and solid-state (SS) NMR enhanced by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), as well as TPR-H₂ and TEM techniques revealed highly dispersed (methylcyclopentadienyl)methylplatinum(IV) sites on the surface ((MeCp)PtMe/Zn/SiO₂, 1). In addition, computational modeling suggests that the surface reaction of (MeCp)PtMe₃ with Zn(II)-modified SiO₂ support is thermodynamically favorable (Δ G = -12.4 kcal/mol), likely due to the increased acidity of the hydroxyl group, as indicated by NH₃-TPD and DNP-enhanced ¹⁷O{¹H} SSNMR. In situ DRIFTS and XAS hydrogenation experiments reveal the probable formation of a surface Pt(IV)-H upon hydrogenolysis of Pt-Me groups. The heterogenized organoplatinum(IV)-hydride sites catalyze the selective partial hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene to butenes (up to 95%) and the reduction of nitrobenzene derivatives to anilines (up to 99%) with excellent tolerance of reduction-sensitive functional groups (olefin, carbonyl, nitrile, halogens) under mild reaction conditions.

Heterogeneous Single-Atom Catalyst for Visible-Light-Driven High-Turnover CO2 Reduction: The Role of Electron Transfer

Visible-light-driven conversion of CO₂ into chemical fuels is an intriguing approach to address the energy and environmental challenges. In principle, light harvesting and catalytic reactions can be both optimized by combining the merits of homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalysts; however, the efficiency of charge transfer between light absorbers and catalytic sites is often too low to limit the overall photocatalytic performance. In this communication, it is reported that the single-atom Co sites coordinated on the partially oxidized graphene nanosheets can serve as a highly active and durable heterogeneous catalyst for CO₂ conversion, wherein the graphene bridges homogeneous light absorbers with single-atom catalytic sites for the efficient transfer of photoexcited electrons. As a result, the turnover number for CO production reaches a high value of 678 with an unprecedented turnover frequency of 3.77 min^-1 , superior to those obtained with the state-of-the-art heterogeneous photocatalysts. This work provides fresh insights into the design of catalytic sites toward photocatalytic CO₂ conversion from the angle of single-atom catalysis and highlights the role of charge kinetics in bridging the gap between heterogeneous and homogeneous photocatalysts.

Syntheses of Molybdenum Oxo Alkylidene Complexes through Addition of Water to an Alkylidyne Complex

Addition of one equiv of water to Mo(CAr)[OCMe(CF3)2]3(1,2-dimethoxyethane) (2, Ar = o-(OMe)C6H4) in the presence of PPhMe2 leads to formation of Mo(O)(CHAr)[OCMe(CF3)2]2(PPhMe2) (3(PPhMe2)) in 34% yield. Addition of one equiv of water alone to 2 produces the dimeric alkylidyne hydroxide complex, {Mo(CAr)[OCMe(CF3)2]2(μ-OH)}2(dme) (4(dme)) in which each bridging hydroxide proton points toward an oxygen atom in an arylmethoxy group. Addition of PMe3 to 4(dme) gives the alkylidene oxo complex, (3(PMe3)), an analogue of 3(PPhMe2) (95% conversion, 66% isolated). Treatment of 3(PMe3) with two equiv of HCl gave Mo(O)(CHAr)Cl2(PMe3) (5), which upon addition of LiO-2,6-(2,4,6-i-Pr3C6H2)2C6H3 (LiOHIPT) gave Mo(O)(CHAr)(OHIPT)Cl(PMe3) (6). Compound 6 in the presence of B(C6F5)3 will initiate the ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cyclooctene, 5,6-dicarbomethoxynorbornadiene (DCMNBD), and rac-5,6-dicarbomethoxynorbornene (DCMNBE), and the homocoupling of 1-decene to 9-octadecene. The poly(DCMNBD) has a cis,syndiotactic structure, whereas poly(DCMNBE) has a cis,syndiotactic,alt structure. X-ray structures were obtained for 3(PPhMe2), 4(dme), and 6.

Clean chlorination of silica surfaces by a single-site substitution approach

A chlorination method for the selective substitution of well-defined isolated silanol groups of the silica surface has been developed using the catalytic Appel reaction. Spectroscopic analysis, complemented by elemental microanalysis studies, reveals that a quantitative chlorination could be achieved with highly dehydroxylated silica materials that exclusively possess non-hydrogen bonded silanol groups. The employed method did not leave any carbon or phosphorus residue on the silica surface and can be regarded as a promising tool for the future functionalization of metal oxide surfaces.

Redox-active ligand controlled selectivity of vanadium oxidation on Au(100)

Metal-organic coordination networks at surfaces, formed by on-surface redox assembly, are of interest for designing specific and selective chemical function at surfaces for heterogeneous catalysts and other applications. The chemical reactivity of single-site transition metals in on-surface coordination networks, which is essential to these applications, has not previously been fully characterized. Here, we demonstrate with a surface-supported, single-site V system that not only are these sites active toward dioxygen activation, but the products of that reaction show much higher selectivity than traditional vanadium nanoparticles, leading to only one V-oxo product. We have studied the chemical reactivity of one-dimensional metal-organic vanadium - 3,6-di(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (DPTZ) chains with O2. The electron-rich chains self-assemble through an on-surface redox process on the Au(100) surface and are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, and density functional theory. Reaction of V-DPTZ chains with O2 causes an increase in V oxidation state from VII to VIV, resulting in a single strongly bonded (DPTZ2-)VIVO product and spillover of O to the Au surface. DFT calculations confirm these products and also suggest new candidate intermediate states, providing mechanistic insight into this on-surface reaction. In contrast, the oxidation of ligand-free V is less complete and results in multiple oxygen-bound products. This demonstrates the high chemical selectivity of single-site metal centers in metal-ligand complexes at surfaces compared to metal nanoislands.

Organometallic Zirconium Compounds in an Oxygen-Rich Coordination Environment: Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Tris(oxoimidazolyl)hydroboratozirconium Compounds

A series of tris(oxoimidazolyl)hydroborato ligands, which serve as L₂X [O₃] donors, have been employed to obtain organometallic zirconium compounds in an uncommon oxygen-rich coordination environment. For example, Cp[To^MeBenz]ZrCl₂ has been synthesized via the reaction of [To^MeBenz]Na with CpZrCl₃ and bears a structural resemblance to the bent metallocene dichloride derivative Cp₂ZrCl₂. In addition, the half-sandwich counterparts [To^MeBenz]ZrCl₃ and [To^But]ZrCl₃ have been obtained by metathesis of ZrCl₄ with [To^MeBenz]Na and [To^But]Na, respectively. The structurally related zirconium benzyl compounds [To^RBenz]Zr(CH₂Ph)₃ (R = Me, Bu^t, 1-Ad) have also been synthesized via the reactions of [To^RBenz]Tl with Zr(CH₂Ph)₄, and X-ray diffraction studies demonstrate that the benzyl ligands in these compounds are conformationally flexible and exhibit a large range of Zr-CH₂-Ph bond angles (94.7-131.7°). Protolytic cleavage of one of the benzyl ligands of [To^RBenz]Zr(CH₂Ph)₃ (R = Bu^t, 1-Ad) may be achieved by treatment with [PhNHMe₂][B(C₆F₅)₄] to generate {[To^RBenz]Zr(CH₂Ph)₂}[B(C₆F₅)₄], which are catalysts for the polymerization of ethylene. The molecular structure of the ether adduct, {[To^ButBenz]Zr(CH₂Ph)₂(OEt₂)}[B(C₆F₅)₄], has been determined by X-ray diffraction. In addition to the use of tris(oxoimidazolyl)hydroborato ligands, bis(oxoimidazolyl)hydroborato ligands have also been used to obtain zirconium benzyl compounds in oxygen-rich environments, namely, [Bo^MeBenz]₂Zr(CH₂Ph)₂ and [Bo^AdBenz]₂Zr(CH₂Ph)₂.

Computational Design of Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework Nodes for Catalysis

Recent progress in the synthesis and characterization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has opened the door to an increasing number of possible catalytic applications. The great versatility of MOFs creates a large chemical space, whose thorough experimental examination becomes practically impossible. Therefore, computational modeling is a key tool to support, rationalize, and guide experimental efforts. In this outlook we survey the main methodologies employed to model MOFs for catalysis, and we review selected recent studies on the functionalization of their nodes. We pay special attention to catalytic applications involving natural gas conversion.

A N-heterocyclic tetracarbene Pd(ii) moiety containing a Pd(ii)-Pb(ii) bimetallic MOF for three-component cyclotrimerization via benzyne

The Key RuV=O Intermediate of Site-Isolated Mononuclear Water Oxidation Catalyst Detected by in Situ X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Improvement of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a challenging step toward the development of sustainable energy technologies. Enhancing the OER rate and efficiency relies on understanding the water oxidation mechanism, which entails the characterization of the reaction intermediates. Very active Ru-bda type (bda is 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxylate) molecular OER catalysts are proposed to operate via a transient 7-coordinate Ru^V═O intermediate, which so far has never been detected due to its high reactivity. Here we prepare and characterize a well-defined supported Ru(bda) catalyst on porous indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. Site isolation of the catalyst molecules on the electrode surface allows trapping of the key 7-coordinate Ru^V═O intermediate at potentials above 1.34 V vs NHE at pH 1, which is characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopies. The in situ extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis shows a Ru═O bond distance of 1.75 ± 0.02 Å, consistent with computational results. Electrochemical studies and density functional theory calculations suggest that the water nucleophilic attack on the surface-bound Ru^V═O intermediate (O-O bond formation) is the rate limiting step for OER catalysis at low pH.

Direct structural identification of carbenium ions and investigation of host-guest interaction in the methanol to olefins reaction obtained by multinuclear NMR correlations

Probing and determining the intermediates formed during catalytic reactions in heterogeneous catalysis are strong challenges. Using ¹³C labelling and two dimensional ¹³C-¹³C through-bond NMR correlations, we directly reveal the structures of a range of carbenium ion species formed during the conversion of methanol to olefins on acidic H-ZSM-5 zeolite by mapping the carbon-carbon bond connectivities. Additionally, we use ¹³C-²⁷Al and ²⁹Si-¹³C through-space NMR experiments to probe the interactions between the confined carbon species (including carbenium ions) and the framework of the zeolite, which quantitatively provide an estimate for the carbon-aluminium and carbon-silicon distances, respectively.
