Creating false memories for visual scenes

Creating false memories has become an important tool to investigate the processes underlying true memories. In the course of investigating the constructive and/or reconstructive processes underlying the formation of false memories, it has become clear that paradigms are needed that can create false memories reliably in a variety of laboratory settings. In particular, neuroimaging techniques present certain constraints in terms of subject response and timing of stimuli that a false memory paradigm needs to comply with. We have developed a picture paradigm which results in the false recognition of items of a scene which did not occur almost as often as the true recognition of items that did occur. It uses a single presentation of pictures with thematic, stereotypical scenes (e.g. a beach scene). Some of the exemplars from the scene were removed (e.g. a beach ball) and used as lures during an auditory recognition test. Subjects' performance on this paradigm was compared with their performance on the word paradigm reintroduced by Roediger and McDermott. The word paradigm has been useful in creating false memories in several neuroimaging studies because of the high frequency of false recognition for critical lures (words not presented but closely associated with lists of words that were presented) and the strong subjective sense of remembering accompanying these false recognitions. However, it has several limitations including small numbers of lures and a particular source confusion. The picture paradigm avoids these limitations and produces identical effects on normal subjects.

The cognitive neuroscience of constructive memory

Numerous empirical and theoretical observations point to the constructive nature of human memory. This paper reviews contemporary research pertaining to two major types of memory distortions that illustrate such constructive processes: (a) false recognition and (b) intrusions and confabulations. A general integrative framework that outlines the types of problems that the human memory system must solve in order to produce mainly accurate representations of past experience is first described. This constructive memory framework (CMF) emphasizes processes that operate at encoding (initially binding distributed features of an episode together as a coherent trace; ensuring sufficient pattern separation of similar episodes) and also at retrieval (formation of a sufficiently focused retrieval description with which to query memory; postretrieval monitoring and verification). The framework is applied to findings from four different areas of research: cognitive studies of young adults, neuropsychological investigations of brain-damaged patients, neuroimaging studies, and studies of cognitive aging.

Individual differences and the creation of false childhood memories

We investigated if college students will create false childhood memories, the role of self-knowledge in memory creation, and if there are reliable individual differences related to memory creation. Based on information obtained from parents, we asked college students about several true childhood experiences. We also asked each student about one false event and presented the false event as if it was based on parent information. We asked the students to describe all events in two interviews separated by one day. When participants could not recall an event (whether true or false), we encouraged them to think about related self-knowledge and to try to imagine the event. In an unrelated experimental session, the students were administered four cognitive/personality scales: the Creative Imagination Scale (CIS), the Tellegen Absorption Scale (TAS), the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (SDS). We found that approximately 25% of the students created false childhood memories. Participants who made connections to related self-knowledge in the first interview were more likely to create false memories. We also found that the CIS and the DES were positively related to memory creation. Factors that decrease one's ability to engage in reality monitoring are related to the acceptance of false events and the creation of false memories.

False recognition in younger and older adults: exploring the characteristics of illusory memories

Roediger and McDermott (1995) demonstrated that when subjects hear a list of associates to a "theme word" that has itself not been presented, they frequently claim to recollect having heard the nonpresented theme word on the study list. In Experiment 1, we found that asking subjects to explain their remember responses, by writing down exactly what they remembered about the item's presentation at study, did not significantly diminish the rate of remember false alarms to nonpresented theme words. We also found that older adults were relatively more susceptible than younger adults to this false-recognition effect. Subjects' explanations suggested that both veridical and illusory memories were predominantly composed of associative information as opposed to sensory and contextual detail. In Experiment 2, we obtained quantitative evidence for this conclusion, using a paradigm in which subjects were asked focused questions about the contents of their recollective experience. Lastly, we found that both younger and older adults recalled more sensory and contextual detail in conjunction with studied items than with nonpresented theme words, although these differences were less pronounced in older adults.

Illusory recall of vocal affect

Illusions of memory occur when a person recalls something that did not take place, and may result from processes that systematically bias recall. This paper reports three experiments exploring a novel form of memory bias that can occur when a person is attempting to recall the affective tone of voice in which someone spoke previously. Subjects first studied photographs of faces while listening to sentences spoken in a positive or negative tone of voice. At test, subjects saw brief presentations of faces and were asked to recall the tone of voice in which the pictured person had spoken earlier. Across a variety of study and test conditions a strong recall bias was observed: when faces conveyed either subtle positive or negative affect, subjects tended to recall the pictured person as having spoken with a matching affective tone, regardless of the tone of voice in which the person had actually spoken. It is proposed that this affective recall bias may be the product of a retrieval mechanism that relies on a combination of information from the memory trace and retrieval environment to guide responding.

Can cognitive neuroscience illuminate the nature of traumatic childhood memories?

Recent findings from cognitive neuroscience and cognitive psychology may help explain why recovered memories of trauma are sometimes illusory. In particular, the notion of defective source monitoring has been used to explain a wide range of recently established memory distortions and illusions. Conversely, the results of a number of studies may potentially be relevant to forgetting and recovery of accurate memories, including studies demonstrating reduced hippocampal volume in survivors of sexual abuse, and recovery from functional and organic retrograde amnesia. Other recent findings of interest include the possibility that state-dependent memory could be induced by stress-related hormones, new pharmacological models of dissociative states, and evidence for 'repression' in patients with right parietal brain damage.

Assessing outcome in psychoanalysis and long-term dynamic psychotherapy

The efficacy of psychoanalysis and long-term psychotherapy remains a fundamentally unresolved issue for lack of methodologically sound studies. This article reviews the shortcomings of prior long-term treatment research, and presents a rationale and justification of the importance of more rigorous outcome studies. An emphasis on process research is premature when efficacy remains uncertain. The modern reconceptualization of psychotherapy in terms of hermeneutic theory is discussed in relation to the empirical model. Although historically the hermeneutic perspective has served to repudiate positivism, the hermeneutic and empirical (but not positivistic) approaches to understanding information actually share common priorities. The clearest of these is that the process is ultimately evaluated and validated by the produced effect. It is argued that the recasting of psychoanalytic technique and theory according to aesthetic and pragmatic principles is not inconsistent with contemporary outcome research paradigms so long as the professed treatment objective is clearly specified in verifiable terms. The specific methodologic problems involved in extending the successful short-term psychotherapy research model to psychoanalysis are discussed. An overview of the major components of the Columbia feasibility study currently underway is presented. Finally, a number of assessment domains-for which reliable and validated instruments exist-that are thought to be relevant to outcome are reviewed.
