Contact dermatitis encountered in the production of epoxy resins

Occupational exposure to epoxy components and risk of dermatitis: A registry-based follow-up study of the wind turbine industry

BACKGROUND

Allergic contact allergy and dermatitis are frequently reported among epoxy-exposed workers.

OBJECTIVES

To determine the risk of dermatitis associated with epoxy exposure.

METHODS

We followed 825 epoxy-exposed and 1091 non-exposed blue-collar workers, and 493 white-collar workers of a Danish wind turbine blade factory during 2017-2022 with linked data from national health registers on diagnoses, patch testing, or fillings of prescriptions for topical corticosteroids. Incidence rate ratios of dermatitis or a first-time topical corticosteroid prescription were estimated with Poisson regression using non-exposed blue-collar workers as reference. We similarly estimated incidence rate ratios for the duration of epoxy exposure and current epoxy exposure.

RESULTS

Epoxy-exposed blue-collar workers showed a dermatitis incidence rate of 2.1 per 100 000 person days, a two-fold increased risk of dermatitis and a 20% increased risk of filling a prescription for topical corticosteroids. Incidence rate ratios were higher during early exposure and declined with further exposure for both outcomes. White-collar workers had generally lower risks.

CONCLUSION

We observed an increased risk of dermatitis following epoxy exposure confirming previous case reports and cross-sectional studies emphasizing the need for intensified focus on preventive efforts for this group of workers.

Amines as occupational hazards for visual disturbance

Various amines, such as triethylamine and N,N-dimethylethylamine, have been reported to cause glaucopsia in workers employed in epoxy, foundry, and polyurethane foam industries. This symptom has been related to corneal edema and vesicular collection of fluid within the corneal subepithelial cells. Exposure to amine vapors for 30 min to several hours leads to blurring of vision, a blue-grey appearance of objects, and halos around lights, that are probably reversible. Concentration-effect relationships have been established. The visual disturbance is considered a nuisance, as it could cause onsite accidents, impair work efficiency, and create difficulties in driving back home. Occupational exposure limits have been established for some amines, but there is shortage of criteria. Volatility factors, such as vapor pressure, should be considered in industrial settings to prevent human ocular risks, while trying to reduce levels of hazardous amines in the atmosphere.

'Airborne' contact dermatitis due to Leica immersion oil

BACKGROUND

Contact dermatitis has often been described in healthcare staff, resulting essentially from the use of natural rubber latex gloves, antiseptics, and especially aldehydes. This study reports an unusual cause of contact dermatitis in laboratory technicians.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Four patients working in the bacteriology departments of three different hospitals were seen for airborne contact dermatitis. All were patch tested for specific plastics and glues.

RESULTS

For all patients, positive patch reactions were obtained with classic epoxy resins, such as diglycidylether of bisphenol, as well as with new types, such as diglycidylether of bisphenol F and an epoxyacrylate resin.

CONCLUSIONS

Although phenols and ether handled by the laboratory technicians and an epoxy mastic applied during floor repair were initially suspected, an immersion oil used in light microscopy proved to be the real cause of the dermatitis. To our knowledge, these are the first reported cases due to this type of contact.

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis caused by 2,4,6-tris-(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol, and review of sensitizing epoxy resin hardeners

BACKGROUND

Epoxy resin compounds (ERC) include a large number of sensitizing chemicals such as epoxy resins (ER), hardeners (curing agents), and reactive diluents. Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) caused by ERCS is often occupational.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We report a patient, sensitized to a hardener of a two-component epoxy paint. Three conventional patch test sessions were performed to diagnose the causative chemical. We also review the literature on sensitizing epoxy-resin hardeners.

RESULTS

A 47-year-old nonatopic woman developed dermatitis from a two-component epoxy paint. Patch testing with epoxy resin was negative, but 2,4,6-tris(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol (tris-DMP), used in the paint hardener, induced an allergic patch test reaction. We also review briefly other epoxy hardeners that have caused allergic dermatitis, including: (1) aliphatic polyamines, e.g., ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, 3-dimethylaminopropylamine, and trimethylhexamethylenediamine; (2) cycloaliphatic polyamines, e.g., isophoronediamine and 3,3'-dimethyl-4,4-diaminodicyclohexylmethane; (3) aromatic amines, such as 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane, m-phenylene diamine, and 1,3-xylylene diamine; (4) dicyanodiamide; (5) triglycidyl isocyanurate, an epoxy compound that may be used as an epoxy-resin hardener; and (6) additives in epoxy accelerators, such as hexavalent chromate.

CONCLUSIONS

No one chemical can be used to screen for sensitization to the many different epoxy hardeners. Extensive patch testing may be required to reveal the hardener that has caused the allergy. The hardener, 2,4,6-tris-(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol (tris-DMP), is a new sensitizer. To verify ACD caused by tris-DMP, patch-testing at 1% in petrolatum is suggested.

Allergic contact dermatitis due to an epoxy acrylate

A printer developed allergic contact dermatitis due to epoxy acrylate resin. Incomplete cross-reactivity between four epoxy acrylate resins and a lack of cross-reactivity to epoxy resin was demonstrated. The epoxy acrylate resin has been shown to be a potent cutaneous sensitizer for the guinea-pig.

Health problems of epoxy resins and amine-curing agents

Epoxy resins were first introduced about 10 years ago. Toxic effects, particularly dermatitis, have been frequently described. An investigation into the possible causes of pathological sequelae following the use of epoxy resin/amine mixtures has been undertaken. The cause of most cases of dermatitis and sensitization appears to be uncombined amine which is present in recent mixtures and persists in hardened resin for long periods. The results of experiments with two of the most commonly used resin/amine mixtures confirm this. Cold-cured resins are more dangerous and remain so even when hardened. A simple theory is suggested for the mechanism of the reaction between epoxy resins, amines, and biological systems. This theory leads logically to the handling precautions outlined.
