Abstract
OBJECTIVE To rigorously evaluate the short-term and long-term effectiveness of Tuina (TN), alone and in combination with physiotherapy (PT), for Chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNLBP) through a comprehensive, high-quality clinical trial. METHODS This randomized, single-blind trial was conducted from September 2020 to July 2023, involving 204 CNLBP patients from the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University. Participants underwent a baseline assessment, 6 treatment sessions over 8 weeks, a post-treatment evaluation in the 9th week, and a 20-week follow-up. Participants were randomly assigned to TN, PT, or a combination of TN and PT (TP) groups. Each treatment involved 6 sessions with a minimum 7-day interval, each lasting 30 minutes. Primary outcome was the change in Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain. Secondary outcomes included the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), Range of Motion (ROM) of the spine, Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Scale (TCMSS), and adverse events (AE). RESULTS Among the 204 participants, 67.16 % were female, and 88.73 % completed the 20-week follow-up. All groups showed significant reductions in VAS scores post-treatment and at follow-up. Secondary outcomes improved significantly, with notable decreases in ODI and TCMSS scores. Pairwise comparisons within groups indicated statistical significance, particularly in ODI scores, with clinical relevance. No significant differences were found between the groups. ROM and SF-36 showed statistical but not clinical significance. Only one AE (0.49 %) was reported, with no severe incidents. CONCLUSION All treatment groups, including TN, TP, and PT, demonstrated significant reductions in VAS scores for CNLBP patients, with effects lasting up to 20 weeks. While TN and TP showed substantial improvements in secondary outcomes, particularly in ODI scores, no significant differences were found between the groups. These findings suggest that all treatments can be effective for managing CNLBP, supporting clinical practitioners in selecting appropriate interventions for patients, especially for those unable to engage in active exercises, utilizing passive movements like TN to enhance health outcomes.

Abstract
This study investigated the sex-specific associations between pain perception and testosterone levels in healthy controls (HCs) and patients with migraine. Male and female HCs and migraine patients were recruited. A series of questionnaires were completed by the participants to evaluate their psychosocial profiles, which included data on mood, stress, and sleep quality. Heat pain thresholds and suprathreshold pain ratings at 45 °C (referred to as the pain perception score [PPS]) were assessed using the Thermode system. Salivary testosterone levels were analyzed using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. A total of 88 HCs (men/women: 41/47, age: 29.9 ± 7.7 years) and 75 migraine patients (men/women: 30/45, age: 31.1 ± 7.7 years) completed all assessments. No significant differences were observed in either the psychosocial profiles or heat pain thresholds and PPSs between the sexes in the control and migraine groups. A positive correlation between testosterone levels and PPSs was identified in the male controls (r = .341, P = .029), whereas a negative correlation was identified in the female controls (r = -.407, P = .005). No such correlations were identified in the migraine group. This study confirms that a negative association is present between PPSs and testosterone levels in female controls, which is in line with the findings that testosterone is associated with reduced pain perception. Our study is the first to demonstrate a sex-specific association between PPSs and testosterone levels in HCs. Moreover, this study also revealed that the presence of migraine appears to disrupt this association. PERSPECTIVE: This study revealed that testosterone levels demonstrate opposite associations with pain perception in healthy men and women. However, the presence of migraine appears to disrupt this sex-specific association.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low back pain (LBP) is a common disorder and is considered one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, resulting in adverse health, social, and economic outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the effects and durability of 8-week Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) exercises on pain, functional disability, and quality of life in individuals aged 30 to 50 years with non-specific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP). METHODS This research employed a pre- and post-test design with a follow-up period, in which 29 participants (16 in the control group and 13 in the exercise group) remained until the end of the study. Pain intensity, functional disability, and quality of life were assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS), the Oswestry Disability Index, and the SF-36 questionnaire, respectively, before intervention, immediately after, and two months post-intervention. The control group continued their routine daily activities, while the exercise group performed DNS exercises three times a week for 8 weeks. The data was analyzed using a mixed-design ANOVA (P ≤ 0.05). RESULTS The results showed improvements in pain (F (2,24) = 5.31, P = 0.01, η2 = 0.31), functional disability (F (2,24) = 4.17, P = 0.03, η2 = 0.26), and quality of life (F (2,24) = 4.70, P = 0.02, η2 = 0.28) in the exercise group at the Post-test compared to the Pre-test. However, the durability of the exercise effects at the follow-up assessment was not sustainable compared to the Post-test and Pre-test (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION An 8-week period of DNS exercises can improve pain, functional disability, and quality of life in individuals with NSCLBP. However, a 2-month period of detraining can reduce the positive outcomes of these exercises. Abstract
PURPOSE The aim was to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound-guided erector spinae plane (ESP) block and compare with the conventional physical therapy in chronic low back pain (LBP). MATERIALS AND METHODS This prospective case-controlled study included patients with chronic LBP. Their clinical and demographic data were obtained, and they were divided into two groups for conventional physical therapy and ESP blocks. Prior to treatment, on the first day, the second week, and the third month, the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and visual analog scale (VAS) pain score were evaluated. RESULTS The study included 43 patients, 21 in the ESP block group and 22 in the conventional physical therapy group. The VAS in movement was higher in the ESP block group at baseline (p = 0.047). On the first day after the treatments, the ESP block group showed lower resting (p < 0.001) and movement (p = 0.001) VAS values than the conventional physical therapy group. At the end of 3 months, both groups had improved VAS and ODI scores (all p < 0.001). CONCLUSION US-guided ESP block might be considered a successful, safe, and technically simple alternative treatment in patients with chronic LBP to control pain and reduce the cost of physical therapy and lost workdays.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of physical therapy on pain and disability alleviation in patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP) has been demonstrated, but the risk factors for treatment failure remain unknown. AIM To explore the associations of baseline demographic and clinical characteristics with treatment failure after physical therapy intervention for cLBP. DESIGN A secondary analysis of a single-blind randomized clinical trial. SETTING A rehabilitation hospital. POPULATION A total of 98 patients with cLBP completed the 12-month measurement. METHODS Patients were randomly grouped into 3-month therapeutic aquatic exercise or physical therapy modalities. The primary outcome was treatment failure, which was defined as a decrease in the numeric rating scale to less than 2.0 points at 12-month follow-up. Associations between baseline demographic and clinical characteristics with risk of treatment failure were assessed by logistic regressions. RESULTS The pain intensity in the failure cases was alleviated after 3-month intervention but continuously increased at 6- and 12-month follow-up (P<0.05). Old age was significantly associated with an increased risk of treatment failure (adjusted OR 3.26, 95% CI 1.11-9.60). Compared with those receiving physical therapy modalities, the patients receiving therapeutic aquatic exercise had less risk of treatment failure (adjusted OR 0.19, 95% CI 0.08-0.47), and age (P=0.022) was a modifier for this association. CONCLUSIONS Compared with younger ones, older patients with cLBP had a higher risk of treatment failure after physical therapy and gained a stronger benefit of long-term pain alleviation from therapeutic aquatic exercise. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT Therapeutic aquatic exercise is an effective therapy for cLBP and more helpful for preventing treatment failure than physical therapy modalities, especially for older patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Individuals with chronic pain often receive prescription opioid medication, and they may use cannabis to treat pain as well, although the risks of cannabis-opioid co-use are significant. This study aimed to investigate whether two transdiagnostic factors, emotion regulation and distress tolerance, had significant indirect effects in the relationship between pain and cannabis use in adults with chronic pain and an opioid prescription. METHODS Participants (n = 450; mean age = 38.6 ± 11.09) were recruited using Qualtrics panel service and were 75 % female and 79 % White, non-Hispanic. Participants completed a 30-minute self-report survey capturing three-month cannabis use, the Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale (DERS), and the Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS). The Graded Pain Scale (GCPS) assessed pain severity/intensity and disability. Analyses used the SPSS PROCESS macro, with both single (i.e., one transdiagnostic factor) and parallel indirect effects (i.e., both the DERS and DTS) examined. RESULTS There were statistically significant indirect effects for both the DERS and DTS in the relationship between pain intensity or disability and three-month cannabis use in single factor models. In the parallel indirect effect model, only the DERS was statistically significant (intensity indirect effect coefficient = 0.0195 % confidence interval [95 %CI] = 0.0065, 0.390; disability indirect effect coefficient = 0.0147, 95 %CI = 0.0055, 0.0274). CONCLUSIONS When examining parallel indirect effects, only emotional regulation and not distress tolerance mediated the relationship between chronic pain and cannabis use among those with an opioid prescription. Clinically, interventions aimed at improving emotional regulation in individuals with chronic pain can help limit cannabis and opioid co-use.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate and compare the effectiveness of aquatic physiotherapy and therapeutic exercise in the physical and functional performance of patients with chronic low back pain. METHODS Twenty-six participants were randomized into 3 groups, namely an aquatic physiotherapy group (AG), a therapeutic exercise group (EG), and a control group (CG). The pain, disability, and quality of life were compared before and after the exercise protocols for 2 months, twice a week, on alternate days, for 60 min. For statistical analyses, the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to test the difference between the groups; the Wilcoxon test and the effect size were used for before-and-after comparisons. RESULTS Twenty participants completed the study. There was a significant difference improvement in pain between the AG and the EG (p = 0.004), between the EG and the CG (p = 0.05), and in social role functioning between the groups (p = 0.02). No differences were observed in the other analyzed variables between the groups. Compared to the pre-treatment state, there were significant improvements in the AG in terms of pain (p = 0.02), functionality (p = 0.03), and general health status (p = 0.04). CONCLUSION The AG group showed significant and clinical improvement in pain, disability, and quality of life. Improvements related to social aspects were found in the EG compared to the CG. The water provides a safe environment that facilitates the onset of exercise, so aquatic physiotherapy could be considered the first recommendation for patients with low back pain.

Abstract
Pain is a complex, subjective experience that can significantly impact quality of life, particularly in aging individuals, by adversely affecting physical and emotional well-being. Whereas acute pain usually serves a protective function, chronic pain is a persistent pathological condition that contributes to functional deficits, cognitive decline, and emotional disturbances in the elderly. Despite substantial progress that has been made in characterizing age-related changes in pain, complete mechanistic details of pain processing mechanisms in the aging patient remain unknown. Pain is particularly under-recognized and under-managed in the elderly, especially among patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRD), and other age-related conditions. Furthermore, difficulties in assessing pain in patients with AD/ADRD and other age-related conditions may contribute to the familial caregiver burden. The purpose of this article is to discuss the mechanisms and risk factors for chronic pain development and persistence, with a particular focus on age-related changes. Our article also highlights the importance of caregivers working with aging chronic pain patients, and emphasizes the urgent need for increased legislative awareness and improved pain management in these populations to substantially alleviate caregiver burden.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to provide a narrative review of the effects of physical exercise in the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain. Physical inactivity and sedentary behavior are associated with chronic musculoskeletal pain and can aggravate it. For the management of musculoskeletal pain, physical exercise is an effective, cheap, and safe therapeutic option, given that it does not produce the adverse effects of pharmacological treatments or invasive techniques. In addition to its analgesic capacity, physical exercise has an effect on other pain-related areas, such as sleep quality, activities of daily living, quality of life, physical function, and emotion. In general, even during periods of acute pain, maintaining a minimum level of physical activity can be beneficial. Programs that combine several of the various exercise modalities (aerobic, strengthening, flexibility, and balance), known as multicomponent exercise, can be more effective and better adapted to clinical conditions. For chronic pain, the greatest benefits typically occur with programs performed at light-to-moderate intensity and at a frequency of two to three times per week for at least 4 weeks. Exercise programs should be tailored to the specific needs of each patient based on clinical guidelines and World Health Organization recommendations. Given that adherence to physical exercise is a major problem, it is important to empower patients and facilitate lifestyle change. There is strong evidence of the analgesic effect of physical exercise in multiple pathologies, such as in osteoarthritis, chronic low back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia.

Abstract
Introduction While adverse events related to physiotherapy are possible, the type of adverse event and the area of physiotherapy practice in which they occur are not well understood. The purpose of this scoping review was to establish adverse events related to physiotherapy practice and understand the nature of these events and the circumstances in which they occurred. Methods Relevant literature from January 2014 to February 2024 was gathered from five electronic databases. Studies reporting adverse events within any physiotherapy practice (intervention or assessment) were eligible. Two reviewers independently assessed title and abstract, and full texts. Findings were synthesised by clinical streams. Results A total of 58 studies met the inclusion criteria. Common adverse events described in musculoskeletal physiotherapy involving manual therapy, exercise and electrotherapy were increased pain and stiffness. Cardiorespiratory physiotherapy interventions involving early mobilisation, exercise and airway clearance therapy reported desaturation and haemodynamic instability. Neurological physiotherapy studies reported falls and fatigue during gait and balance training and exercise. Oncology and aged care interventions involving exercise, balance training and lymphoedema management reported increased pain and muscle strain while studies including pelvic floor muscle training reported the adverse event of vaginal discomfort. Conclusion This review identified adverse events occurring during physiotherapy interventions or assessment procedures. Increased monitoring and proactive safety measures may be necessary to ensure patient safety during these treatments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aquatic exercise (AE) is becoming ever more popular as a physical therapy, while it is unclear what precise improvements it will produce and how effective it will be in comparison with other non-surgical therapies. The study aimed to assess whether AE positively impacts chronic musculoskeletal disorder patients in terms of pain, physical function, and quality of life. METHODS PRISMA guidelines were followed, and our study protocol was published online at PROSPERO under registration number CRD42023417411. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane library databases for English-language articles published before April 11, 2023, including studies from all relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs). After screening, we ultimately included 32 RCTs with a total of 2,200 participants. We also performed subgroup analyses for all included studies. This meta-analysis calculated standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI), and the variance was estimated using a random-effects model. The quality of the included studies was assessed by using the Cochrane collaborative "risk of bias" assessment tool (version 2.0). Thus ensuring that the literature included is of high quality. RESULTS This meta-analysis included 32 trials with 2,200 participants; these patients were all between the ages of 38-80. The study showed that compared to the no exercise (NE) group, patients in the AE group experienced a remarkable reduction in pain (SMD: -0.64, P < 0.001), a significant increase in physical function (SMD: 0.62, P < 0.001), and a statistically significant improvement in quality of life (SMD: -0.64, P < 0.001). When compared to land-based exercise (LE), AE significantly relieves patients' pain (SMD: -0.35, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis to study whether AE could improve chronic musculoskeletal disorders. The evidence suggests that AE benefits pain, physical function, and quality of life in adults with chronic musculoskeletal conditions compared to NE. Furthermore, when compared to LE, AE continues to provide a better improvement in patient pain. More long-term clinical trials are needed to confirm AE's positive effects and improvement mechanisms and the more existential advantages compared to LE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low back pain is a common, multifaceted disorder that directly affects diverse aspects of people's lives in terms of health, personal and social lives. A variety of pathological disorders, including low back pain, may benefit from hydrotherapy. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to systematically analyze the efficacy of aquatic exercise on pain intensity, disability, and quality of life among adults with low back pain. DATA SOURCES A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, and Scopus up to February 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that which examined the impact of aquatic exercise. The most relevant articles were selected based on research criteria. The PEDro scale was applied to assess the quality of the included studies. Review Manager 5.3 was used for conducting all analyses. STUDY SELECTION Out of 856 articles, 14 RCTs (n = 484 participants; 257 in the experimental groups and 227 in the control groups) met our inclusion criteria. RESULTS Pooled results illustrated that aquatic exercises significantly reduced pain (mean differences (MD): -3.82; p < 0.00,001), improved disability (standardized mean differences (SMD): 1.65; p < 0.00,001), and improved quality of life in both the physical component score (mean difference (MD), 10.13; p < 0.00,001) and the mental component score (MD, 6.45; p < 0.0001) when compared with a control group. CONCLUSION The current review showed that aquatic exercise regimens were effective among adults with low back pain. High-quality clinical investigations are still needed to support the use of therapeutic aquatic exercise in a clinical setting.

Abstract
Objectives: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) accounts for a majority of the disability associated with LBP, which can produce long-term negative effects. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between smoking and pain, dysfunction and psychological status in patients with CLBP. Methods: The 54 patients with CLBP were recruited and divided into smoking and non-smoking groups. Their pain, dysfunction, anxiety, depression, fear and quality of life were evaluated. The amount of cigarettes smoked daily was recorded. Results: Significant differences in VAS, ODI, RMDQ and FABQ and the impact of LBP on life and work were found between smoking and non-smoking patients. In addition, a correlation was found between the daily cigarette smoking amount and VASmax, FABQtotal, SDS and FABQ-W. Moreover, a correlation was observed between the amount of cigarettes smoked daily and the degree of impact of low back pain on work. Conclusion: The study found that smoking affected the aggravation of symptoms in patients with CLBP, which indicated that patients with CLBP and people at risk of LBP should be aware of the harm caused by smoking.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic low back pain is a common musculoskeletal disease. With the increasing number of patients, it has become a huge economic and social burden. It is urgent to relieve the burden of patients. There are many common rehabilitation methods, and aquatic physical therapy is one of them. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to summarize the existing literature and analyze the impact of aquatic physical therapy on pain intensity, quality of life and disability of patients with chronic low back pain. METHODS Through 8 databases, we searched randomized controlled trials on the effect of aquatic physical therapy on patients with chronic low back pain. These trials published results on pain intensity, quality of life, and disability. This review is guided by Cochrane Handbook for systematic reviews of interventions version 5.1.0. The level of evidence was assessed through GRADE. RESULTS A total of 13 articles involving 597 patients were included. The results showed that compared with the control group, aquatic physical therapy alleviated the pain intensity (Visual Analogue Scale: SMD = -0.68, 95%CI:-0.91 to -0.46, Z = 5.92, P < 0.00001) and improved quality of life (physical components of 36-Item Short Form Health Survey or Short-Form 12: SMD = 0.63, 95%CI:0.36 to 0.90, Ζ = 4.57, P < 0.00001; mental components of 36-Item Short Form Health Survey or Short-Form 12: SMD = 0.59, 95%CI:0.10 to 1.08, Ζ = 2.35, P = 0.02), and reduced disability (Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire: SMD = -0.42, 95%CI:-0.66 to -0.17, Ζ = 3.34, P = 0.0008; Oswestry Disability Index or Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire: SMD = -0.54, 95%CI:-1.07 to -0.01, Ζ = 1.99, P = 0.05). However, aquatic physical therapy did not improve patients' pain at rest (Visual Analogue Scale at rest: SMD = -0.60, 95%CI:-1.42 to 0.23, Ζ = 1.41, P = 0.16). We found very low or low evidence of effects of aquatic physical therapy on pain intensity, quality of life, and disability in patients with chronic low back pain compared with no aquatic physical therapy. CONCLUSIONS Our systematic review showed that aquatic physical therapy could benefit patients with chronic low back pain. However, because the articles included in this systematic review have high bias risk or are unclear, more high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to verify.

Abstract
One of the common negative effects of a stroke that seriously lowers patients' quality of life is post-stroke pain (PSP). Thus, exercise in PSP management has become a hot research topic. The main advantages of exercise therapy are affordability and ease of acceptance by patients compared to other treatment methods. Therefore, this article reviews the effectiveness and possible mechanisms of exercise interventions for PSP. Exercise training for patients with PSP not only improves physical function but also effectively reduces pain intensity and attenuates the behavioral response to pain. In addition, exercise therapy can improve brain function and modulate levels of pro-inflammatory and neurotrophic factors to exert specific analgesic effects. Potential mechanisms for exercise intervention include modulation of synaptic plasticity in the anterior cingulate gyrus, modulation of endogenous opioids in vivo, reversal of brain-derived neurotrophic factor overexpression, inhibition of purinergic receptor (P2X4R, P2X7R) expression, and inhibition of microglia activation. However, current research on exercise for PSP remains limited, and the sustainable benefits of exercise interventions for PSP need to be further investigated.

Abstract
Diabetic neuropathic pain (DNP) is a common disease that affects the daily lives of diabetic patients, and its incidence rate is very high worldwide. At present, drug and exercise therapies are common treatments for DNP. Drug therapy has various side effects. In recent years, exercise therapy has received frequent research and increasing attention by many researchers. Currently, the treatment of DNP is generally symptomatic. We can better select the appropriate exercise prescription for DNP only by clarifying the exercise mechanism for its therapy. The unique pathological mechanism of DNP is still unclear and may be related to the pathological mechanism of diabetic neuropathy. In this study, the mechanisms of exercise therapy for DNP were reviewed to understand better the role of exercise therapy in treating DNP.

Abstract
Background Increasing lines of evidence indicate that traditional Chinese exercise (TCE) has potential benefits in improving chronic low back pain (CLBP) symptoms. To assess the clinical efficacy of TCE in the treatment of CLBP, we performed a systematic review of existing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of CLBP and summarized the neural mechanisms underlying TCE in the treatment of CLBP. Methods A systematic search was conducted in four electronic databases: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and EBSCO from January 1991 to March 2022. The quality of all included RCTs was evaluated by the Physiotherapy Evidence Database Scale (PEDro). The primary outcomes included pain severity and pain-related disability. Results A total of 11 RCTs with 1,256 middle-aged and elderly patients with CLBP were included. The quality of all 11 included RCTs ranged from moderate to high according to PEDro. Results suggested that TCE could considerably reduce pain intensity in patients with CLBP. Overall, most studies did not find any difference in secondary outcomes (quality of life, depression, and sleep quality). Conclusion The neurophysiological mechanism of TCE for treating CLBP could be linked to meditation and breathing, posture control, strength and flexibility training, and regulation of pain-related brain networks. Our systematic review showed that TCE appears to be effective in alleviating pain in patients with CLBP.

Abstract
BackgroundIncreased social distance is one of the manifestations of social impairment. Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is one of factors associated with increased social distance and social withdrawal. Exercise therapy is an effective means to social impairment. However, whether exercise could reduce social distance in patients with CLBP remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effect of exercise on social distance in middle-aged and elderly patients with CLBP.MethodsThe longitudinal intervention recruited 29 middle-aged and elderly patients with CLBP from various communities in Yangpu District, Shanghai, China. The participants received exercise intervention for 8 weeks. The assessments were conducted before and after the intervention, including social distance, pain intensity, unpleasantness of pain, Roland-Morris Questionnaire (RMDQ), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Intention to treat analysis was performed.ResultsAfter the 8-week exercise intervention, the social distance of patients with CLBP was shorter than that before intervention and showed significant difference (p < 0.05). The scores of pain intensity, unpleasantness of pain, RMDQ, SAS, and SDS also decreased and were significantly different between pre- and post-intervention (p < 0.05). In addition, the social distance, pain intensity, unpleasantness of pain, RMDQ, SAS, and SDS scores of the moderate CLBP group decreased more after the intervention compared with those of the mild CLBP group.ConclusionThe 8-week exercise intervention cannot only shorten the social distance in middle-aged and elderly patients with CLBP but also relieve pain, disability, and negative emotions.

Abstract
The research and clinical application of the noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) technique in the treatment of neuropathic pain (NP) are increasing. In this review article, we outline the effectiveness and limitations of the NIBS approach in treating common central neuropathic pain (CNP). This article summarizes the research progress of NIBS in the treatment of different CNPs and describes the effects and mechanisms of these methods on different CNPs. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) analgesic research has been relatively mature and applied to a variety of CNP treatments. But the optimal stimulation targets, stimulation intensity, and stimulation time of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for each type of CNP are still difficult to identify. The analgesic mechanism of rTMS is similar to that of tDCS, both of which change cortical excitability and synaptic plasticity, regulate the release of related neurotransmitters and affect the structural and functional connections of brain regions associated with pain processing and regulation. Some deficiencies are found in current NIBS relevant studies, such as small sample size, difficulty to avoid placebo effect, and insufficient research on analgesia mechanism. Future research should gradually carry out large-scale, multicenter studies to test the stability and reliability of the analgesic effects of NIBS.

Abstract
Background. Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a clinically common and expensive disease. Patients frequently take sick leaves because of pain and dysfunction, and their unpleasant life and work experiences cause psychological depression and anxiety and affect their quality of life. Sleep disturbance is a common problem among patients with low back pain (LBP) with more than 50% complaining about poor sleep quality. This study aimed to explore the correlations between anxiety, sleep quality, and pressure-pain threshold (PPT) and their differences between patients with CLBP and asymptomatic people. Methods. Forty patients with CLBP and 40 asymptomatic people were recruited. Relevant data, including State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and PPT, were individually and independently collected by blinded physiotherapists with a practicing certificate and then statistically analyzed. An independent sample t-test was used to determine the intergroup differences between patients with CLBP and asymptomatic populations. Pearson correlation coefficient was employed for correlation analysis. Results. The CLBP group had significantly higher anxiety scores (41.64 ± 9.88 vs. 36.69 ± 8.31; t = −2.496,
) than the asymptomatic group. A significant difference was found in the total score of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (6.41 ± 2.43 vs. 5.09 ± 2.18; t = −2.628,
) but not in the trait anxiety (44.00 ± 7.83 vs. 42.67 ± 9.51; t = −0.695,
) of the two groups. State−Trait Anxiety Inventory showed a low to moderate negative correlation with PPT. No remarkable correlation was observed between Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and PPT. Conclusions. Patients with CLBP showed considerably worse state anxiety and sleep quality than asymptomatic people; however, no substantial difference in PPT was found between the two groups. The results suggest that in clinical practice, the focus should include pain and related social and psychological factors. CLBP treatment could be considered from multiple perspectives and disciplines.This trial is registered with Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (Trial registration: ChiCTR-TRC-13003701).

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) has a very high incidence worldwide and has become a very common joint disease in the elderly. Currently, the treatment methods for OA include surgery, drug therapy, and exercise therapy. In recent years, the treatment of certain diseases by exercise has received increasing research and attention. Proper exercise can improve the physiological function of various organs of the body. At present, the treatment of OA is usually symptomatic. Limited methods are available for the treatment of OA according to its pathogenesis, and effective intervention has not been developed to slow down the progress of OA from the molecular level. Only by clarifying the mechanism of exercise treatment of OA and the influence of different exercise intensities on OA patients can we choose the appropriate exercise prescription to prevent and treat OA. This review mainly expounds the mechanism that exercise alleviates the pathological changes of OA by affecting the degradation of the ECM, apoptosis, inflammatory response, autophagy, and changes of ncRNA, and summarizes the effects of different exercise types on OA patients. Finally, it is found that different exercise types, exercise intensity, exercise time and exercise frequency have different effects on OA patients. At the same time, suitable exercise prescriptions are recommended for OA patients.

Abstract
BackgroundDiabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP) is a usual complication of diabetes with a high incidence and mortality. Many diabetes-related studies have been published in various journals. However, bibliometrics and visual analyses in the domain of DPNP research are still lacking. The study aimed to offer a visual method to observe the systematic overview of global research in this field from 2011 to 2021.MethodsThe publications from the Science Citation Index Expanded in Web of Science (WOS) in the past 11 years (from 2011 to 2021) were collected and sorted out, and those related to DPNP were extracted and analyzed. The article language was limited in English. Then, CiteSpace V was used for the bibliometric analysis of the extracted literature.ResultsA total of 1,422 articles met the inclusion criteria. A continuous but unstable growth in the amounts of papers published on DPNP was observed over the last 11 years. The subject sort of the 1,422 papers mainly concentrates on Endocrinology Metabolism, Clinical neurology and Neurosciences from the WOS. According to the research contribution in the field of DPNP, the United States occupies a leading position, with the highest amounts of publications, citations, open access, and the H- index.ConclusionThis study provides a visual analysis method for the trend of DPNP, and offers some hidden serviceable information that may define new directions for future research.

Abstract
Exercise can help inhibition of neuropathic pain (NP), but the related mechanism remains being explored. In this research, we performed the effect of swimming exercise on the chronic constriction injury (CCI) rats. Compared with CCI group, the mechanical withdrawal threshold of rats in the CCI-Swim group significantly increased on the 21st and 28th day after CCI surgery. Second-generation RNA-sequencing technology was employed to investigate the transcriptomes of spinal dorsal horns in the Sham, CCI, and CCI-Swim groups. On the 28th day post-operation, 306 intersecting long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and 173 intersecting mRNAs were observed between the CCI vs Sham group and CCI-Swim vs CCI groups. Then, the biological functions of lncRNAs and mRNAs in the spinal dorsal horn of CCI rats were then analyzed. Taking the results together, this study could provide a novel perspective for the treatment for NP.

Abstract
Objective Chronic low back pain is an overwhelming problem for a wide range of people and leads to tactile acuity deficits. We aimed to investigate the correlations among age, pain severity, disability, and tactile acuity in patients with chronic low back pain by using multiple tactile acuity tests. Methods A total of 58 participants (36.40 ± 14.95 years) with chronic low back pain were recruited, and two-point discrimination, point-to-point test, and two-point estimation were performed on their painful low back areas. The correlations between age, pain intensity, disability, and tactile acuity were characterized with Pearson's correlation coefficients. Subgroup analyses according to the median values of age, pain intensity, and disability were used to compare the intergroup difference in tactile acuity. Results Results illustrated significant negative associations among age, pain intensity, disability, and tactile acuity. Subgroup analyses revealed that patients with below-the-median values of age, pain intensity, and disability had better performance in tactile acuity tests than those with above-the-median values. Conclusion This study indicated that tactile acuity was negatively associated with age, pain intensity, and disability in young patients with chronic low back pain.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction: The transition from reproductive to post-reproductive life is part of the female life cycle that impacts well-being, with menopause as a significant milestone. Regular physical activity should be encouraged to mitigate the symptoms of menopause and prevent age-related problems. Hydrotherapy is one such alternative, since immersion in heated water facilitates exercises that would be difficult to perform on land. Objective: Assess women’s perception about the effect of hydrotherapy on the signs and symptoms of postmenopause. Methods: A qualitative study in which participants underwent 48 hydrotherapy sessions and answered a semistructured interview. Results: The participants were eight women, aged 55.75 ± 8.55 years, menopausal for 8.5 ± 7.98 years, with vasomotor symptoms (100%), mood swings (87.5%), sleep disorders (87.5%), vaginal dryness (62.5%), low sex drive (62.5%) and chronic pain (100%). Conclusion: Women’s perception about the effects of hydrotherapy on the signs and symptoms of postmenopause include less pain and muscle tension, a decline in the signs and symptoms, better quality of life and sexual pleasure, and an improvement in biopsychosocial factors such as anxiety and stress through better social interaction.

Abstract
Resumo Introdução: A transição da vida reprodutiva para a pós-reprodutiva é considerada um dos ciclos da vida feminina que gera impactos no bem-estar da mulher, sendo a menopausa o marco significativo. A prática regular de atividade física deve ser encorajada para reduzir os sintomas da menopausa e prevenir alterações associadas ao envelhecimento. Assim, a fisioterapia aquática é uma opção de atividade física, pois a imersão em água aquecida possibilita a realização de exercícios que seriam difíceis de serem executados no solo. Objetivo: Evidenciar a percepção de mulheres sobre a fisioterapia aquática nos sinais e sintomas da pós-menopausa. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo, com participantes que realizaram 48 sessões de fisioterapia aquática e responderam a uma entrevista semiestruturada. Resultados: Participaram do estudo oito mulheres, 55,75 ± 8,55 anos, menopausadas há 8,5 ± 7,98 anos, com referência de alterações vasomotoras (100%), do humor (87,5%), do sono (87,5%), secura vaginal (62,5%), diminuição da libido (62,5%) e dor crônica (100%). Conclusão: A percepção das mulheres sobre os efeitos da fisioterapia aquática nos sinais e sintomas da menopausa aponta para uma diminuição do quadro álgico e da tensão muscular, diminuição dos sinais e sintomas da pós-menopausa, melhora da qualidade do sono, bem como do prazer sexual, e melhora nos fatores biopsicossociais como ansiedade e estresse, através da melhora da interação social.
