Abstract
Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common surgical procedure for hip joint pathologies, with the direct anterior approach (DAA) gaining popularity due to potential benefits in postoperative recovery. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of rehabilitation strategies following DAA THA, focusing on surgical techniques, postoperative care, and outcomes. The evolution of the DAA to THA is discussed, highlighting historical advancements and comparisons with other surgical approaches. Surgical techniques and considerations specific to the DAA are detailed, including outcomes and complications compared to alternative approaches. The role of the surgical technique in influencing postoperative rehabilitation is explored, emphasizing the importance of optimizing surgical procedures for enhanced recovery. Postoperative care and rehabilitation models following DAA THA are examined, with a focus on the impacts of different rehabilitation protocols on patient outcomes. The review underscores the significance of tailored rehabilitation programs in promoting optimal recovery and patient satisfaction. Current evidence from recent studies, meta-analyses, and clinical trials is critically analyzed to provide insights into the effectiveness of postoperative rehabilitation strategies. The review identifies gaps in the existing literature and proposes recommendations for future research to improve rehabilitation protocols and enhance outcomes. In conclusion, this review highlights the importance of postoperative rehabilitation in the context of DAA THA. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Total hip arthroplasty (THA) can be performed through various surgical approaches, including direct anterior (DAA). DAA-THA may offer faster recovery but carries a higher risk of complications, which may be mitigated by surgeon volume and experience. We examined the association of surgeons' annual surgical volume with major complications after DAA-THA in a population-based sample. METHODS A population-based retrospective cohort study was carried out on primary DAA-THA patients in Ontario between April 2016 and March 2021. We used restricted cubic splines to visually define the association between annual DAA surgeon volume and the risk of major surgical complications (fractures, dislocations, infections, and revisions) within 1 year of surgery. We further compared the complication rates amongst different DAA volume categories (< 30, 30-60, and > 60 cases/year). RESULTS The study encompassed 9,672 DAA-THA patients (52% female, median age 67 years). We showed a sharp decline in the probability of complications as the surgical volume of DAA-THA increased within the lower range of 0-30 cases/year; the probability slightly increased after the surgical volume exceeded 60 cases/year. The overall complication rates were 3.09%, 2.24%, and 2.18% for the surgical experience group of < 30 cases/year, 30-60 cases/year, and > 60 cases/year, respectively. CONCLUSION There was an inverse relationship between surgical volume and complication rates in DAA-THA within the lower volume ranges. Maintaining a surgical volume of at least 30 DAA-THA cases/year can minimize complications, emphasizing the importance of surgical volume in this approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to assess the association between the disease process of hip osteoarthritis and total hip arthroplasty (THA) outcomes; this is a critical issue, as rapid progression has been postulated to be responsible for patient dissatisfaction after THA. METHODS This retrospective case-control study included 255 patients who underwent THA and completed a mean follow-up duration of 42.1 months (range, 24.0 to 77.0). We classified patients into those who had (n = 26) and did not have (n = 229) rapidly progressive osteoarthritis of the hip (RPOA), defined as a narrowing rate of joint space ≥ 2 mm yearly or a ≥ 50% loss within 12 months, excluding any other cause of a destructive arthropathy. Propensity score-matched cohorts for age, sex, body mass index, and spino-pelvic measures were created, and the outcomes were compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS After successfully matching RPOA (n = 25) and non-RPOA patients (n = 50), there were significant differences in minimum clinically important difference (P = .009 for European Quality of Life 5-Dimension, and P < .001 for low back pain), patient acceptable symptom state (P = .015 for European Quality of Life 5-Dimension, and P < .001 for Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score Joint Replacement score), patient satisfaction (P = .028), and T1 pelvic angle as an indicator of global sagittal spinal deformity (P = .017). There was a correlation between T1 pelvic angle and low back pain in the RPOA group (R = 0.628, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Patients who exhibited RPOA before undergoing THA showed worse patient-reported outcomes compared with those who did not have rapid progression. Our study highlights the critical role of the disease process in influencing THA outcomes, advocating for a paradigm shift toward more meticulous preoperative evaluations, including global spinal deformity, standardized diagnostic criteria, and tailored interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Objective and subjective outcomes in the direct anterior approach (DAA) and posterior approach (PA) in total hip arthroplasty (THA) were assessed in this study, using the Oxford Hip Score (OHS) as primary outcome. Pain, 3 objective performance-based tests, surgical time, blood loss and length of stay were assessed as secondary outcomes. METHODS Patients with primary end-stage osteoarthritis were prospectively enrolled by shared decision making for the DAA (32 patients) or PA (26 patients). Baseline data were collected preoperatively and outcomes postoperatively at 2-, 6-, 9- and 12-month follow-up. RESULTS There is no significant difference (p < 0.05) between the DAA and PA on primary outcome (OHS). There was a main effect of time which indicated an increase of OHS over time independent of group (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS In the current study, no significant differences in postoperative functional outcome were found between DAA and PA in all follow-up moments.

Abstract
PURPOSE The functional interaction between the hip and spine in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) is clinically significant, as it impacts post-operative outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to identify factors associated with the progression of sagittal spinal deformity and assess the association with patient-reported outcomes. METHODS This retrospective case-control study included 200 patients who underwent primary THA and completed a mean follow-up duration of 42.2 months (range, 24.0-78.0). We employed a multivariate logistic regression to identify variables predictive of a post-THA sagittal vertical axis (SVA) ≥ 50 mm, which was indicative of a spinal sagittal imbalance. Propensity score-matched cohorts for age, sex, body mass index, follow-up duration, hip flexion contracture, developmental dysplasia, pelvic incidence (PI), and SVA were created, and the outcomes were compared between the two groups. RESULTS PI (odds ratio 1.39; 95% confidence interval 1.04-1.86, p = 0.033) was associated with an SVA ≥ 50 mm. After successfully matching patients with (n = 50) and without (n = 50) an SVA ≥ 50 mm, the minimum clinically important difference showed significant differences between the 50 matched pairs (p = 0.016 for EuroQol-5D, p = 0.003 for Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score Joint Replacement, and p < 0.001 for low back pain). CONCLUSION PI is associated with the development of a positive sagittal spinal malalignment post-THA. This finding can assist surgeons in managing patient expectations and in optimising outcomes. Feasible strategies are warranted to minimise the risk of spinal deformity progression post-THA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of the direct anterior approach (DAA) in total hip arthroplasty (THA) has steadily increased in the Netherlands since 2007. The aim of this study was to outline how the DAA has been implemented in the Netherlands. Moreover, we investigated the learning curve of the DAA at a hospital level, and explored patient characteristics of the DAA compared with other approaches and during the learning phase after implementing the DAA. METHODS In this population-based cohort study, we included all primary THAs between 2007 and 2020 (n = 342,473) from the Dutch Arthroplasty Register. For hospitals implementing the DAA (n > 20), patients were categorized in 4 experience groups using the date of surgery: 1 to 50, 51 to 100, 101 to 150, or > 150. Subsequently, data from different hospitals were pooled and survival rates were calculated using Kaplan-Meier survival analyses. Adjusted revision rates were calculated using mixed Cox proportional hazard models (frailty). RESULTS The use of the DAA gradually rose from 0.2% in 2007 to 41% of all primary THAs in 2020. A total of 64 (56%) hospitals implemented the DAA. However, not all hospitals continued using this approach. After implementation, the 5-year survival rate for the first 50 procedures was significantly lower (96% confidence interval [CI] 95.8 to 97.2) compared to >150 procedures (98% CI 97.7 to 98.1). Multivariable Cox hazard analyses demonstrated a higher risk of revision during the first 50 procedures compared with >150 procedures (hazard ratio 1.6, CI 1.3 to 2.0). CONCLUSIONS The use of DAA for primary THA significantly increased. For hospitals implementing DAA, a considerable learning curve with increased revision risk was seen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multiple hemiarthroplasty (HA) approaches exist for femoral neck fracture (FNF) treatment. However, there is no consensus on the superiority of one approach for postoperative outcomes. This study assessed outcomes among randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the posterior approach (PA), direct lateral approach (DLA), anterolateral approach (ALA), and the direct anterior approach (DAA) in HA for FNF. METHODS PubMed, Ovid/MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were queried in February 2024. A frequentist model network meta-analysis of eligible prospective RCTs compared outcomes among approaches using P-scores. RESULTS Of 1,481 retrieved studies, 11 RCTs totaling 1,513 FNF patients who underwent HA through a PA (n = 446; 29.5%), DLA (n = 481; 31.8%), ALA (n = 296; 19.6%), or DAA (n = 290; 19.2%) with median (interquartile range) follow-up of 6 (4.5-12.0) months were included for meta-analysis. DAA was associated with statistically increased operative duration (mean difference [MD], 1.89 minutes; 95% CI, 0.08 to 3.69 minutes; p < 0.001) compared with a PA, whereas an ALA was associated with statistically greater blood loss compared with a PA (MD, 5.81 mL; 95% CI, 4.11 to 7.50 mL; p < 0.001). There were no differences in the incidence of fracture, dislocation, infection, complications, revision, nor 1-year mortality among approaches. There were also no differences in hip nor pain score improvement at latest follow-up, although with high heterogeneity (I2 = 85.7% and 94.2%, respectively). CONCLUSION This study found no clinical difference in improvement in pain, function, nor in revision outcomes and operative characteristics among HA approaches for FNF, and each approach had a similar adverse event profile. Despite limited randomized evidence, these findings suggest comparable short-term efficacy and safety of all approaches. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Therapeutic, Level I. Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate the distance and correlation between the anatomy of the anterior side of the hip joint and the femoral nerve. METHODS Using ten fresh-frozen cadavers with twenty hip joints. We dissected and marked the femoral nerve in the inguinal area. Employing the direct anterior approach, we identified and marked study points, including the superior and inferior points of the anterior rim of the acetabulum, ¼ point, half point, and ¾ point along an imagined line connecting the formers, the inferomedial and mid aspect of the femoral neck, and the soft spot. Coronal plane measurements gauged the distance between these points and the femoral nerve. The collected data were analyzed to assess the distance and correlation. RESULTS In the coronal plane, the median distance between the inferior point of the anterior rim of the acetabulum and the femoral nerve was 0 millimeters (interquartile range [IQR] 0-0). Likewise, the median distance between the mid aspect of the medial side of the femoral neck and the femoral nerve was 0 millimeters (IQR 0-0). Additionally, the mean distance between the soft spot and the femoral nerve was 1.18 cm (SD 0.63). CONCLUSION Surgeons approaching the hip joint via the direct anterior approach should be cautious at the inferior point of the anterior rim of the acetabulum and the mid aspect of the femoral neck. The soft spot at the anterior rim of the acetabulum remains safe from direct injury when surgeons use the correct technique during anterior retractor insertion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Iatrogenic vascular injury during total hip arthroplasty (THA) is rare, reported at rates of 0.05 to 0.3%, but a potentially limb-threatening and life-threatening complication. We aimed to describe safe and danger zones for the superior gluteal vessel bundle (SGV bundle) with reference to different THA approaches. METHODS There were 27 formalin-fixed cadavers with 49 hemipelves dissected. The course and distribution of the SGV bundle were investigated with the help of anatomical landmarks like the greater trochanter, the iliac tubercle (IT), and the ischial tuberosity. RESULTS We found and exposed the SGV bundle in all 49 specimens with no sex-specific differences. No SGV bundle was encountered up to 28 mm from the greater trochanter and up to 16 mm below the IT. The zone with the highest probability of finding the vessels was 25 to 65 mm below the IT in 39 (80%) cases - defining a danger zone (in relation to the skin incision) in the proximal fourth for the direct anterior approach, in the proximal half for the antero-lateral approach, in the proximal fifth for the direct lateral approach, and almost no danger zone for the posterior approach. CONCLUSIONS Special care in proximal instrument placement should be taken during THA. When extending one of the surgical approaches, manipulations in the proximal, cranial surgical window should be performed with the utmost care to avoid SGV bundle injury.

Abstract
Professor Sir John Charnley has been rightfully hailed as a visionary innovator for conceiving, designing, and validating the Operation of the Century-the total hip arthroplasty. His groundbreaking achievement forever changed the orthopedic management of chronically painful and dysfunctional arthritic joints. However, the well-accepted surgical approach of completely removing the diseased joint and replacing it with a durable and anatomically based implant never translated to the treatment of the degenerated spine. Instead, decompression coupled with fusion evolved into the workhorse intervention. In this commentary, the authors explore the reasons why arthrodesis has remained the mainstay over arthroplasty in the field of spine surgery as well as discuss the potential shift in the paradigm when it comes to treating degenerative lumbar disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) is increasingly being performed in the outpatient setting. However, there is little known regarding the differences in same-day discharge (SDD) rates and complications of operative approach in same-day total hip arthroplasty in the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) setting. METHODS A retrospective chart review was performed between July 2019 and October 2021 for all patients who underwent primary THA in a single freestanding ASC. Successful SDDs, surgical approaches, lengths of surgery, estimated blood losses (EBL), complications, and readmission events were recorded for each patient. Complications were compared using Pearson Chi-Squares, while EBL and surgery lengths were compared with 1-way analysis of variances (ANOVA) (alpha = 0.5). There were 17 total complications in 326 total hip arthroplasties (5.2%), including direct admissions to the emergency department, 30-day and 90-day readmissions, wound complications, instability, infection, and revision surgery. Among all complications, there were 5 direct admissions, making the successful SDD rate 98.5%. RESULTS Complications and direct admissions were not associated with approach. The 30-day readmission rates were associated with approach, with no readmissions in the direct anterior approach (DAA) or the antero-lateral approach (AL) cohorts and 3 (4.3%) in the posterior approach (PA) cohort. CONCLUSIONS In the ASC setting, patients undergoing THA regardless of approach showed no difference in successful SDDs or complications aside from 30-day readmissions. Same-day THA can be safely performed in the DAA, AL, and PA to the hip.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The management of well-fixed femoral stems in revision total hip arthroplasty (rTHA) remains a subject of debate, with concerns over potential complications arising from stem retention. This study aimed to investigate the re-revision rates due to aseptic loosening of the stem, overall re-revision rates, dislocation rates, and factors influencing these outcomes in rTHA with a retained well-fixed femoral stem. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic search was conducted across several databases including PubMed, EMBASE, and CENTRAL to identify pertinent publications from their inception through 2023. We specifically focused on studies that reported outcomes of rTHA with retained well-fixed femoral stems. The study designs incorporated in our research encompassed both cohort studies and case series studies. Thirty-five studies involving isolated acetabular revision and retaining the stem were included, representing a total of 3497 patients. Data extraction was tailored to the study questions. Meta-analyses, meta-regression, and subgroup analyses were conducted to evaluate the outcomes and their relationship with various factors. Pooled results, meta-regression, and subgroup analyses were performed using random-effects models. To assess and reduce bias, we employed Egger's test and the trim and fill method. RESULTS The meta-analysis included 3497 patients with a mean follow-up of 9.28 years. The 10-year risk of re-revision after retaining femoral stem using highly cross-linked polyethylene was 1.7% (95% CI 1.1%-2.3%; I2: 60%) for stem aseptic loosening and 8.8% (95% CI 6.2%-11.4%; I2: 78%) overall re-revision. Dislocation risk was 5.7% (95% CI 4.1-7.0%; I2: 61%). Ceramic heads showed lower stem failure risk than metal heads in long-term follow-ups (P < 0.001). The posterolateral approach in revision surgery resulted in better long-term outcomes compared to the direct lateral approach (P < 0.001). Follow-up duration, timeline of study, Harris Hip Score, type of stem fixation, femoral head material, BMI, age, stem age, and surgical approach were evaluated as influential factors on these outcomes. CONCLUSION The re-revision rate due to aseptic loosening of the retained stem during rTHA was found to be significantly low, supporting the idea of retaining well-fixed stems during rTHA. The overall re-revision and dislocation rates also presented comparable or better outcomes to prior studies. A range of factors, including the use of highly cross-linked polyethylene and ceramic femoral heads, was found to influence these outcomes. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE IV. Abstract
BACKGROUND Total hip arthroplasty is as an effective intervention to relieve pain and improve hip function. Approaches of the hip have been exhaustively explored about pros and cons. The efficacy and the complications of hip approaches remains inconclusive. This study conducted an umbrella review to systematically appraise previous meta-analysis (MAs) including conventional posterior approach (PA), and minimally invasive surgeries as the lateral approach (LA), direct anterior approach (DAA), 2-incisions method, mini-lateral approach and the newest technique direct superior approach (DSA) or supercapsular percutaneously-assisted total hip (SuperPath). AIM To compare the efficacy and complications of hip approaches that have been published in all MAs and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS MAs were identified from MEDLINE and Scopus from inception until 2023. RCTs were then updated from the latest MA to September 2023. This study included studies which compared hip approaches and reported at least one outcome such as Harris Hip Score (HHS), dislocation, intra-operative fracture, wound complication, nerve injury, operative time, operative blood loss, length of hospital stay, incision length and VAS pain. Data were independently selected, extracted and assessed by two reviewers. Network MA and cluster rank and surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) were estimated for treatment efficacy and safety. RESULTS Finally, twenty-eight MAs (40 RCTs), and 13 RCTs were retrieved. In total 47 RCTs were included for reanalysis. The results of corrected covered area showed high degree (13.80%). Among 47 RCTs, most of the studies were low risk of bias in part of random process and outcome reporting, while other domains were medium to high risk of bias. DAA significantly provided higher HHS at three months than PA [pooled unstandardized mean difference (USMD): 3.49, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.98, 6.00 with SUCRA: 85.9], followed by DSA/SuperPath (USMD: 1.57, 95%CI: -1.55, 4.69 with SUCRA: 57.6). All approaches had indifferent dislocation and intraoperative fracture rates. SUCRA comparing early functional outcome and composite complications (dislocation, intra-operative fracture, wound complication, and nerve injury) found DAA was the best approach followed by DSA/SuperPath. CONCLUSION DSA/SuperPath had better earlier functional outcome than PA, but still could not overcome the result of DAA. This technique might be the other preferred option with acceptable complications.

Abstract
Objective To explore the effectiveness of the combined anteversion angle technique in total hip arthroplasty (THA) for treating ankylosing spondylitis (AS) affecting the hip joint. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 73 patients with AS affecting the hip joint who underwent THA between August 2018 and August 2021. According to whether the combined anteversion angle technique was used in THA, the patients were divided into study group (37 cases, combined anteversion angle technique was used in THA) and control group (36 cases, traditional THA). There was no significant difference in baseline data such as gender, age, body mass index, disease duration, preoperative Harris score, range of motion (ROM), acetabular anteversion angle, acetabular abduction angle, femoral anteversion angle, and combined anteversion angle between the two groups ( P>0.05). The operation time, hospital stay, and complications of the two groups were recorded and compared. The Harris score and hip ROM were compared between the two groups before operation, at 1, 3, 6, 12 months after operation, and at last follow-up. The acetabular component anteversion angle, femoral component anteversion angle, acetabular component abduction angle, and component combined anteversion angle were measured postoperatively. Results The operation time in the study group was significantly shorter than that in the control group ( P<0.05), and there was no significant difference in hospital stay between the two groups ( P>0.05). There was no intraoperative complication such as acetabular and proximal femoral fractures, neurovascular injuries in both groups, and the incisions healed by first intention. All patients were followed up 2-3 years, with an average of 2.4 years; there was no significant difference in the follow-up time between the two groups ( P>0.05). During the follow-up period, there was no complication such as hip dislocation, wound infection, delayed wound healing, deep venous thrombosis, and hip dislocation in both groups. The hip Harris score and ROM of the two groups gradually increased with time after operation, and the differences were significant when compared with those before operation ( P<0.05); the above two indicators of the study group were significantly better than those of the control group at each time point after operation ( P<0.05). Extensive bone ingrowth on the surface of the components could be observed in the anteroposterior X-ray films of the hip joint of the two groups at 12 months after operation, and the acetabular components was stable without femoral stem subsidence, osteolysis around the components, and heterotopic ossification. At last follow-up, the acetabular component anteversion angle, femoral component anteversion angle, and component combined anteversion angle in the study group were significantly superior to those in the control group ( P<0.05), except that there was no significant difference in the acetabular component abduction angle between the two groups ( P>0.05). Conclusion For patients with AS affecting the hip joint, the use of the combined anteversion angle technique during THA effectively promotes the recovery of hip joint function and enhances the postoperative quality of life of patients when compared to traditional THA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between preoperative aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI) and postoperative complications following total hip arthroplasty (THA). METHODS All THA for osteoarthritis patients from 2007 to 2020 within the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database were included in this study. Subjects were subsequently divided into cohorts based on APRI. Four groups, including normal range, some liver damage, significant fibrosis, and cirrhosis groups, were created. Comparisons between groups were made for demographics, past medical history, and rate of major and minor complications. Other outcomes included readmission, reoperation, discharge destination, mortality, periprosthetic fracture, and postoperative hip dislocation. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the role of preoperative APRI in predicting adverse outcomes. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS In total, 104,633 primary THA patients were included in this study. Of these, 103,678 (99.1%) were in the normal APRI group, 444 (0.4%) had some liver damage, 256 (0.2%) had significant fibrosis, and 253 (0.2%) had cirrhosis. When controlling for demographics and relevant past medical history, the abnormal APRI groups had a significantly higher likelihood of major complication, minor complication, intraoperative or postoperative bleeding requiring transfusion, readmission, and non-home discharge (all p < 0.05) compared to normal APRI individuals. CONCLUSIONS Abnormal preoperative APRI is linked with an increasing number of adverse outcomes following THA for osteoarthritis for patients across the United States. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level I.

Abstract
AIMS This article aimed to explore the efficacy of robotic arm-assisted total hip arthroplasty (THA) in improving preoperative planning and intraoperative decision-making. METHODS In this single-center, prospective, randomized clinical controlled trial, 60 patients were randomly divided into two groups: conventional THA (cTHA) and robotic arm-assisted THA (rTHA). The rTHA underwent procedures using a robot-assisted surgical system, which generated three-dimensional models to determine the most appropriate prosthesis size and position. The standard process of replacement was executed in cTHA planned preoperatively via X-ray by experienced surgeons. Differences between predicted and actual prosthetic size, prosthetic position, and leg length were evaluated. RESULTS Sixty patients were included in the study, but one patient was not allocated due to anemia. No significant preoperative baseline data difference was found between the two groups. The actual versus predicted implantation size of both groups revealed that 27/30 (90.0%) in the rTHA group and 25/29 (86.2%) in the cTHA group experienced complete coincidence. The coincidence rate for the femoral stem was higher in the rTHA group (83.3%) than that in the cTHA group (62.7%). Between the actual and predicted rTHA, the difference in anteversion/inclination degree (< 6°) was largely dispersed, while cTHA was more evenly distributed in degree (< 9°). The differences in leg length between the surgical side and contralateral side showed a significant deviation when comparing the two groups (P = 0.003), with 0.281 (- 4.17 to 3.32) mm in rTHA and 3.79 (1.45-6.42) mm in cTHA. CONCLUSION Robotic arm-assisted total hip arthroplasty can be valuable for preoperative planning and intraoperative decision-making.

Abstract
BACKGROUND SuperPATH is a novel minimally invasive technique for hip replacement that is gaining increasing attention. The aim of this review was to determine the nature, extent, and quality of current research evidence on SuperPATH and to identify areas for further investigations. METHODS A bibliometric search was conducted in PubMed up to 1 August 2023 using the search term "SuperPATH". Data extraction and quality assessment were performed for relevant articles. RESULTS The bibliometric search yielded 51 articles on SuperPATH, 9 of which were meta-analyses, 11 were randomized controlled trials (RCTs), 4 were prospective non-RCTs, 12 were retrospective comparative studies, 11 were case series, and 4 were other article types. Most articles were published between 2015 and 2023, with a steady increase in publications per year. The articles originated from 13 countries, of which China was the most productive (35%). The quality assessment of the meta-analyses showed that 22.2% were of moderate quality, 66.7% were of low quality, and 11.1% were of critically low quality. The quality assessment of the RCTs showed that 36.4% had a low risk of bias (RoB), 27.2% revealed some concerns, and 36.4% had a high RoB. All studies were evaluated for content and taken into account in the formulation of recommendations and conclusions. CONCLUSIONS The SuperPATH evidence varies from low to high quality. There is a steady increase in SuperPATH publications in the English-language literature and an uneven distribution of the article origins, with most articles coming from China. Consistent terminology should be used in the future, referring to the surgical approach as the direct superior approach (DSA) and to the surgical technique as SuperPATH. This review provides further concrete suggestions for future investigations and recommendations to improve study quality.
