Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical features of patients with bisphosphonate related ocular side effects (BROSE). METHODS The medical records of all patients with BROSE between January 2009 and December 2019 were reviewed. RESULTS Nine cases with BROSE were identified. All subjects were female. Median age at diagnosis was of 69 years. The leading indication for bisphosphonate treatment was osteoporosis (n=7), Paget's disease of bone (n=1) and breast cancer (n=1). Six (66.67%) patients presented with uveitis, one (11%) episcleritis and two (22%) with orbital inflammation. Five events (55.5%) occurred within 10 days of initiating the bisphosphonate and the rest (44.44%) developed within 2 weeks to 3 years later. Four (44.44%) patients had concurrent thyroid disease. An association was found between underlying thyroid disease or autoimmunity. CONCLUSION BROSE is an uncommon complication of bisphosphonate therapy occurring more frequently in patients with an autoimmune predisposition.

Abstract
Background To investigate the association between a history of acute anterior uveitis (AAU) and the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) among patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Methods We identified 38,691 newly diagnosed AS patients between 2003 and 2013 from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. The exposure group was defined as people with uveitis diagnosis by ophthalmologist before AS diagnosis date. The incidence of MACE in patients with AS according to the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision. We randomly selected a comparison group without a history of AAU at a 1:4 ratio matched by age, sex, and index year in relation to the risk of developing MACE. We used cox proportional hazard regression model to compare the risk of MACE between groups, shown as adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Further subgroup analysis and sensitivity tests were also performed. Results There were 3,544 patients in the AAU group and 14,176 patients in the non-AAU group. The aHR of MACE for the AAU group was 0.79 (95% CI = 0.57–1.10) at a 1:4 ratio for age, sex and index year. Sensitivity analyses using various adjustment variables showed consistent results. Cox proportional hazard regression model demonstrated that use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was associated with an increased risk of MACE in this cohort (HR = 3.44; 95% CI = 2.25–5.25). Conclusion This cohort study showed that subjects with AAU was not associated with the risk of MACE among AS patients, compared to non-AAU controls.

Abstract
Purpose: Non-infectious uveitis is a leading cause of vision loss in the developed world. The purpose of this systematic review is to investigate the epidemiology and risk factors of non-infectious uveitis over the last 50 years. Methods: A systematic literature search of Pubmed/MEDLINE database was performed in the 50-year period from January 1971 to January 2021, according to the PRISMA guidelines. Studies that assessed the epidemiology and risk factors for non-infectious uveitis were included. Results: Few epidemiologic studies focus specifically on non-infectious uveitis. In the Unites States, the estimated prevalence of non-infectious uveitis is 121/100,000. The incidence and prevalence varies considerably worldwide. Females and the working age group (20–50 years) appear to be the most affected. Smoking and vitamin D deficiency are the biggest risk factors for non-infectious uveitis, while pregnancy appears to be protective. Additional risk factors include presence of other autoimmune diseases (thyroid disease, diabetes, celiac), pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, psychological stress, and certain medications (bisphosphonates, immune checkpoint inhibitors, female hormone therapy, and etanercept). Discussion: Our systematic review summarizes the incidence and prevalence of non-infectious uveitis and associated modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some uveitis subtypes show seasonal patterns. Whether these patterns are caused by seasonally varying temperatures or by other climatic factors remains unknown. This ecological research aimed to quantify the association between climate variability and uveitis onset. METHODS We combined data from the largest database of uveitis cases with surface climate data to construct panel data. We used choropleth maps to visually assess spatial uveitis variations. RESULTS Among 12 721 reports of uveitis originating from 31 provinces of mainland China from 2006 to 2017, we found that a 1°C increase in monthly temperature was associated with a rise in approximately 2 uveitis reports per 1000 individuals (95% CI 0.00059 to 0.0029). This association was present across all provinces, ranging in effect size from 0.0011 to 0.072 (95% CI 0.00037 to 0.10). A clear 0-3 months of cumulative lagging effect was noted across all types of uveitis, with the strongest effect for non-infectious uveitis (0.0067, 95% CI 0.0041 to 0.013). Stratified by age and sex, we found that men and people aged 20-50 years were more affected by temperature variations. Our model predicts that China might experience an increase in uveitis cases due to future global warming. CONCLUSION Our study is the largest-ever investigation of the association between uveitis and climate and, for the first time, provides evidence that rising temperature can affect large-scale uveitis onset. These results may help promote and implement policies to mitigate future temperature increases and the burden of disease caused by global warming.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate whether patients with thyroid disease are at increased risk of uveitis. METHODS Data was collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance system and included patients newly diagnosed with thyroid disease from 2000 to 2012. The endpoint of interest was a diagnosis of uveitis. RESULTS In analyzing 21,396 patients with thyroid disease, yielding 85,584 matched comparisons, patients with thyroid disease to have a significantly higher cumulative incidence of uveitis when compared to the control cohort with the Kaplan-Meier analysis. This result was further confirmed by Cox regression analysis. The increased risk was persistent in both genders. The association between thyroid disease and uveitis was stronger in patients without diabetes or hypertension. CONCLUSION Patients with thyroid disease were found to have a higher risk for uveitis. For certain age groups or patients without diabetes or hypertension, the role of thyroid disease might be more crucial for uveitis development.
