Suspension Concentrate crop protection formulation design and performance for low spray volume and UAS spray application

BACKGROUND

Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are providing interesting disruptive solutions for spray application of crop protection products with very-low spray volumes (VLV) down to 8 L/ha that offer improved sustainability through reduced water volumes and reduced soil compaction. However, the efficacy of products can be reduced by the significantly lower crop/plant spray coverage and formulation designs that can compensate for this are highly important here.

RESULTS

Suspension Concentrate (SC) formulations designed for VLV use containing and delivering low dose rates (g/ha) of organosilicone alkoxylate high-spreading surfactants were found to result in leaf coverage of VLVs comparable to those observed at higher spray volumes. High spreading was observed on textured leaf surfaces containing sub-micron sized epicuticular wax crystals. Greenhouse fungal disease studies showed enhanced efficacy with these SC formulations compared to standard SC formulations without these additives and maintained the observed increase in efficacy when applied at VLV. Alternatively, SC formulations without high spreading formulants but containing uptake promoting nonionic surfactants showed enhanced cuticle penetration through isolated cuticles at VLV in comparison to higher spray volumes, with coffee-ring spray deposit microstructures present at VLVs. Similarly, greenhouse studies showed enhanced efficacy that was maintained at VLV relative to SCs without these additives.

CONCLUSION

At VLVs, SC formulations applied at relatively low dose rates (g/ha) of formulants (adjuvants) enhancing spreading on the leaf surface and/or uptake of the active ingredient(s) maintained good spreading, uptake and biological efficacy in greenhouse studies overcoming the coverage limitations of SC formulations without these additives. Monitoring of the copper persistence on plant leaves using pulsed thermography

Copper-based fungicides are largely used in agriculture in the control of a wide range of plant diseases. Applied on plants, they remain deposited on leaf surfaces and are not absorbed into plant tissues. Because of accumulation problems and their ecotoxicological profiles in the soil, their use needs to be monitored and controlled, also by using modern technologies to better optimize the efficacy rendering minimum the amount of copper per season used. In this work, we test a novel approach based on pulsed thermography to evaluate the persistence of the copper on plant leaves so that the time between two applications should be the minimum needs. We monitored the thermal response observed on different treatments of both grapevine and tobacco plants over a 3-week period. Our experimental results demonstrate that the new methodological approach based on pulsed thermography can be an effective tool to evaluate in real time the presence of copper on differently treated plants allowing a tentative quantification and, therefore, to optimize its use in the agricultural practices, according also to the European Regulation n. 1107/2009.

Effect of additives in aqueous formulation on the foliar uptake of dimethomorph by cucumbers

BACKGROUND

The efficacy enhancement of dimethomorph formulation by several adjuvants is thought to be through increased foliar uptake. In order to identify the most effective adjuvants, the adjuvancy of 36 additives was examined in aqueous formulations in relation to the absorption of dimethomorph by cucumber leaves.

RESULTS

Polyethylene glycol monohexadecyl ethers with ethylene oxide (EO) contents of between 7 and 20, polyethylene glycol monooctadecyl ethers with EO contents of between 10 and 20 and polyethylene glycol monooctadecenyl ethers with EO contents of between 6 and 20 were effective adjuvants for promoting dimethomorph uptake from both aqueous acetone solutions and aqueous wettable powder (WP) suspensions into cucumber leaves. Polyethylene glycol monododecyl ethers with EO contents of between 7 and 9 were effective in promoting dimethomorph uptake from aqueous WP suspensions but less effective relative to the other adjuvants tested with aqueous acetone solutions. Foliar uptake of dimethomorph was also facilitated by the addition of methyl hexadecanoate, methyl octadecenoate and methyl octadecadienoate.

CONCLUSIONS

Although the foliar uptake of dimethomorph from both aqueous WP suspensions and aqueous acetone solutions was greatest in the presence of fatty alcohol ethoxylates generally having a C(16) or C(18) lipophile, uptake from aqueous surfactant-acetone solutions was, on average, 7.6-fold greater than that from aqueous WP suspensions containing surfactant.

Influence of irrigation methods and an adjuvant on the persistence of carbaryl on pakchoi

Influence of irrigation methods and use of an adjuvant on the persistence of the carbaryl (1-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate) on pakchoi [Brassica rapa L. subsp. chinensis (Rupr.) Olsson] was studied using a commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay kit. After applying carbaryl at a.i. 10.6 g L(-1) with or without an adjuvant (Latron B-1956) to leaves, plants were provided water daily by either overhead or basal application. Pesticide residue on leaf tissues was examined immediately after pesticide application and on 2, 4, 6, and 8 d after pesticide application. Use of the adjuvant did not affect the initial deposit of the pesticide, however pesticide persistence was improved with the adjuvant regardless of irrigation. Overhead irrigation contributed to rapid loss of the pesticide by washing carbaryl from the leaf surface. The longest half-life of carbaryl (6.5 d) was detected on plants receiving basal irrigation plus the adjuvant while the shortest half-life (2 d) was observed when plants were treated with overhead irrigation and no adjuvant.

Effect of Commercial Adjuvants on Vegetable Crop Fungicide Coverage, Absorption, and Efficacy

The addition of an appropriate adjuvant with foliar fungicide can significantly improve coverage, absorption, and efficacy. Laboratory and field studies evaluated coverage, absorption, and efficacy of commercial adjuvants with diverse chemistries on multiple host-pathogen systems. Organosilicone-based adjuvants improved coverage by 26 to 38% compared with a latex spreader-sticker and water. Significant crop by coverage interaction effects were also detected. The organosilicone/methylated seed oil-based adjuvant, Aero Dyne-Amic, significantly improved total [¹⁴C]azoxystrobin absorption on onion and potato by 30 and 21%, respectively, compared with water. The spreader-sticker, Bond, improved [¹⁴C]azoxystrobin absorption on onion and dry bean by 41 and 39%, respectively, compared with water. In experimental field plots, dry bean rust incidence was reduced by 52% when Kinetic or Latron AG-98 was added to maneb compared with maneb alone. The area under the potato early blight disease progress curve was reduced 29, 24, or 21% when Kinetic, Bond, or Latron AG-98 was added to maneb, respectively, compared with maneb applications alone.

A new method for assessing foliar uptake of fungicides using Congo Red as a tracer

In order to develop a new method for measuring foliar uptake of fungicides, Congo Red was selected as a tracer, and optimum procedures were established for washing, extracting and analyzing it and fungicides from leaf surfaces. Congo Red, a water-soluble dye, was not absorbed into cucumber or rice leaf, even in the presence of various surfactants, and was completely washable from leaf surfaces by aqueous acetonitrile solutions. Congo Red and fungicides in washings were quantified to calculate the amount of foliar uptake of the latter, by comparing the ratio to Congo Red. The optimum concentration of Congo Red in a formulation should be established in order to minimize its influence on fungicide uptake. Although Congo Red has proved to be useful with a conventional droplet application method, it will give more realistic and practical results with the spraying method used in the present study.
