Evaluation of surface energy of solid polymers using different models

A nimble strategy for enabling bioderived flame retardants with strikingly enhanced interfacial compatibility in poly (lactic acid) composites

The utilization of bioderived flame retardants in biodegradable poly (lactic acid) (PLA) has profound practical implications for extending the widespread application of PLA composites and protecting the environment. Nevertheless, there are still certain challenges that require prompt attention, especially the ineffectiveness of bio-based flame retardants and their deterioration of the mechanical properties of PLA. This work introduced triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC), which has multiple epoxy functions, into the self-assembly process of phytic acid (PA) and chitosan (CS). The epoxy-modified bioderived flame retardant PA@CS-TGIC (PCT) was well dispersed in the PLA matrix and had a strong interfacial adhesion, while also TGIC had a synergistic char-forming effect. By compounding epoxy-modified ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP), 3%PCT/MAPP-PLA composites may reach a LOI value of 28.8 % and UL-94 V-0 rating. Simultaneously, the melting droplets had been considerably reduced. Tensile strength of the 3%PCT/MAPP-PLA composites was 67.0 MPa, 10.8 % higher than that of pure PLA. This work paves a new avenue for the development of PLA composites with robust mechanical and flame retardant properties.

Experimental Investigation of the Peel Strength of Artificial Leather and Polypropylene Specimens

This study investigates the surface properties and adhesive strength of polypropylene (PP) in order to enhance the bond between PP injection-molded specimens and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) synthetic artificial leather. Plasma, primer, and flame treatments were applied to the surface of each specimen prepared using the two types of injection molds. The surface morphology, surface roughness, and contact angle were analyzed, and peel-strength analyses and a morphological inspections of the peeled specimens were performed. The peeling strength of the PP injection molding was measured, followed by a morphological examination of the peeled specimens. The plasma and flame treatments improved the peel strength, and the plasma and flame treatments changed the rough exterior to a hydrophilic surface, improving the peel strength. In addition, the primer treatment exhibited a lower peel strength than did the other treatments. This confirmed the low adhesion of the primer to the hydrophobic PP surface. The outcomes of this study can be employed across a multitude of industries that require improved adhesion for PP injection molded products.

In-situ reactive compatiblization modified poly(l-lactic acid) and poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) blends with improved toughening and thermal characteristics

Triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) with multifunctional epoxy is used for reactive compatibilization of Poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA)/Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) blends. Interfacial tension, FTIR and SEM results show that TGIC has greater affinity and stronger reactivity with PBAT. The mixing sequence of PLLA/PBAT/TGIC blends has a significant impact on the compatibility. The TGIC and PBAT are reactive blended first, followed by the PLLA, which is most advantageous to produce a substantial amounts of branched copolymers PLLA-g-PBAT at the interface for the (PBAT/4%T) /PLLA blend. The considerable improvement of interfacial compatibility and the thickening of interfacial layer promote the stress transfer from the matrix to the dispersed PBAT phase. In comparison to PLLA/PBAT blend, the breaking elongation of (PBAT/4%T)/PLLA blend is raised by 25.6 times up to 164.2 % and the tensile strength is enhanced up to 32.1 MPa. The present work offers valuable perspectives on how to encourage the efficient application of reactive compatibilizers with epoxy groups in polyester blends.

Understanding stickiness in sugar-rich food systems: A review of mechanisms, analyses, and solutions of adhesion

Stickinessis an inherent textural property in many sugar-rich foods, which can be problematic to the processing of confectionery products. The adhesion between foods and contact surfaces during processing and consumption has not been well understood in academia or industry. The theories of adhesion were discovered by scientists in the adhesive field of study, some of which can explain the stickiness phenomenon of confections. This work reviewed these theories in the context of sugar-rich foods, followed by a survey on the sensory and instrumental analyses of stickiness. Furthermore, the contributions of ingredients, temperature, compression, and contact surfaces to sugar-rich food adhesion are highlighted.

In Vitro Effect of Replicated Porous Polymeric Nano-MicroStructured Biointerfaces Characteristics on Macrophages Behavior

In the last decades, optimizing implant properties in terms of materials and biointerface characteristics represents one of the main quests in biomedical research. Modifying and engineering polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as scaffolds becomes more and more attractive to multiples areas of bio-applications (e.g., bone or cochlear implants). Nevertheless, the acceptance of an implant is affected by its inflammatory potency caused by surface-induced modification. Therefore, in this work, three types of nano-micro squared wells like PVDF structures (i.e., reversed pyramidal shape with depths from 0.8 to 2.5 microns) were obtained by replication, and the influence of their characteristics on the inflammatory response of human macrophages was investigated in vitro. FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirmed the maintaining chemical structures of the replicated surfaces, while the topographical surface characteristics were evaluated by AFM and SEM analysis. Contact angle and surface energy analysis indicated a modification from superhydrophobicity of casted materials to moderate hydrophobicity based on the structure’s depth change. The effects induced by PVDF casted and micron-sized reversed pyramidal replicas on macrophages behavior were evaluated in normal and inflammatory conditions (lipopolysaccharide treatment) using colorimetric, microscopy, and ELISA methods. Our results demonstrate that the depth of the microstructured surface affects the activity of macrophages and that the modification of topography could influence both the hydrophobicity of the surface and the inflammatory response.

Soldering of Electronics Components on 3D-Printed Conductive Substrates

Rapid development of additive manufacturing and new composites materials with unique properties are promising tools for fabricating structural electronics. However, according to the typical maximum resolution of additive manufacturing methods, there is no possibility to fabricate all electrical components with these techniques. One way to produce complex structural electronic circuits is to merge 3D-printed elements with standard electronic components. Here, different soldering and surface preparation methods before soldering are tested to find the optimal method for soldering typical electronic components on conductive, 3D-printed, composite substrates. To determine the optimal soldering condition, the contact angles of solder joints fabricated in different conditions were measured. Additionally, the mechanical strength of the joints was measured using the shear force test. The research shows a possibility of fabricating strong, conductive solder joints on composites substrates prepared by additive manufacturing. The results show that mechanical cleaning and using additional flux on the composite substrates are necessary to obtain high-quality solder joints. The most repeatable joints with the highest shear strength values were obtained using reflow soldering together with low-temperature SnBiAg solder alloy. A fabricated demonstrator is a sample of the successful merging of 3D-printed structural electronics with standard electronic components.

Influence of Titanium Oxide Pillar Array Nanometric Structures and Ultraviolet Irradiation on the Properties of the Surface of Dental Implants-A Pilot Study

Aim: Titanium implants are commonly used as replacement therapy for lost teeth and much current research is focusing on the improvement of the chemical and physical properties of their surfaces in order to improve the osseointegration process. TiO₂, when it is deposited in the form of pillar array nanometric structures, has photocatalytic properties and wet surface control, which, together with UV irradiation, provide it with superhydrophilic surfaces, which may be of interest for improving cell adhesion on the peri-implant surface. In this article, we address the influence of this type of surface treatment on type IV and type V titanium discs on their surface energy and cell growth on them. Materials and methods: Samples from titanium rods used for making dental implants were used. There were two types of samples: grade IV and grade V. In turn, within each grade, two types of samples were differentiated: untreated and treated with sand blasting and subjected to double acid etching. Synthesis of the film consisting of titanium oxide pillar array structures was carried out using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition equipment. The plasma was generated in a quartz vessel by an external SLAN-1 microwave source with a frequency of 2.45 GHz. Five specimens from each group were used (40 discs in total). On the surfaces to be studied, the following determinations were carried out: (a) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, (b) scanning electron microscopy, (c) energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, (d) profilometry, (e) contact angle measurement or surface wettability, (f) progression of contact angle on applying ultraviolet irradiation, and (g) a biocompatibility test and cytotoxicity with cell cultures. Results: The application of ultraviolet light decreased the hydrophobicity of all the surfaces studied, although it did so to a greater extent on the surfaces with the studied modification applied, this being more evident in samples manufactured in grade V titanium. In samples made in grade IV titanium, this difference was less evident, and even in the sample manufactured with grade IV and SLA treatment, the application of the nanometric modification of the surface made the surface optically less active. Regarding cell growth, all the surfaces studied, grouped in relation to the presence or not of the nanometric treatment, showed similar growth. Conclusions. Treatment of titanium oxide surfaces with ultraviolet irradiation made them change temporarily into superhydrophilic ones, which confirms that their biocompatibility could be improved in this way, or at least be maintained.

Preparation and bioactivity of acetylated konjac glucomannan fibrous membrane and its application for wound dressing

Biomaterial-host interactions significantly affect tissue repair, which is modulated by macrophages. In this study, a polysaccharide, konjac glucomannan (KGM), was acetylated with different degrees of substitution (DS), and the acetylated KGM (AceKGM)-based fibrous membrane was designed to modulate the activity of macrophages for accelerating wound healing. AceKGM was biocompatible and easily dissolved in organic solvents. The adhesion force between Raw264.7 cells and the AceKGM substrate was quantitatively detected by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) results showed that the AceKGM fibrous membrane enhanced macrophage expression of anti-inflammatory and pro-regenerative cytokines, and the DS of AceKGM significantly affected membrane bioactivity. The full-thickness mouse skin wound repair experiments indicated that the AceKGM-containing fibrous membranes significantly accelerated wound healing by promoting re-epithelialization, tissue remodeling, and collagen deposition. In summary, AceKGM-based fibrous membranes have potential as bioactive scaffolds for wound regeneration.

Highly-ordered Triptycene Modifier Layer Based on Blade Coating for Ultraflexible Organic Transistors

We present a highly ordered surface modification layer for polymers based on ambient solution-processed triptycene (Trip) derivatives for high-mobility organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). The nested packing of Trip molecules results in the formation of 2D hexagonal arrays, which stack one-dimensionally on the surface of polymer dielectrics without anchoring groups. The Trip surface was previously shown to be preferable for the growth of organic semiconductors (OSCs), and hence for enhancing the mobility of OTFTs. However, although the Trip modifier layer has been realized by thermal evaporation in a high-vacuum environment (TVE), it still has grain-boundary disorders that hinder the optimal growth of OSCs. To fabricate OTFTs with higher mobility, a disorder-free Trip layer is needed. We developed highly ordered Trip layers on polymer dielectrics via blade coating. In addition, we clarified that the highly ordered Trip modifier layer enhances the mobility of the OTFTs by more than 40%, relative to the disordered Trip layer prepared by TVE. Finally, we realized a ring oscillator composed of OTFTs with a highly ordered Trip layer.

The measurement of the surface energy of solids using a laboratory drop tower

This work presents a technique for the study and measurement of the interfacial energies of solid-liquid-gas systems. The instrument and the evaluation method for the measurements obtained by it, allow the analysis of the energy changes of sessile drops submitted to microgravity. A mathematical model based on the thermodynamic of wetting is applied to evaluate the interfacial energies as a function of the drop shape changes due to the effect of the release of gravitation during the experiment. The presented model bases on the thermodynamic equilibrium of the interfaces and not on the balance of bi-dimensional tensors on the contour line. For this reason, the model does not follow Young's equation as the current surface wetting characterization techniques usually do.

Flexible starch-polyurethane films: Physiochemical characteristics and hydrophobicity

Starch-polyurethane (PU) composite films with improved mechanical and hydrophobic properties were developed in this work. A simple and effective microwave-aided starch gelatinisation instrument was used to prepare glycerol plasticized high amylose starch (HAGS) material. Polyethylene glycol-isocyanate (PEG-iso) linker was prepared by reacting PEG 1000 with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI). PEG-iso linker was then grafted into HAGS forming three dimensional urethane networks (PEG-PU). HAGS-PEG-PU composite blends were prepared and dried at ambient temperature to obtain HAGS-PEG-PU films. The mechanical properties and hydrophobicity (as contact angle, CA) of the HAGS-PEG-PU films were measured and analysed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed good grafting of PEG-iso into starch structure. Increase of PEG-iso concentration up to 20% (w/w) improved the molecular mixing and interpenetration between the starch and PEG-PU. The HAGS-PEG-PU films had improved hydrophobicity as indicated by CA values ranging from 51 to 110°and very high flexibility as evidenced from elongation at break (ε_B) values from 17 to 1000%. The HAGS-PEG-PU film formulation containing 20% (w/w) PEG-iso provided the best flexibility (ε_B>1000%) and hydrophobicity (CA>110°).

Fine Tuning Surface Energy of Poly(3-hexylthiophene) by Heteroatom Modification of the Alkyl Side Chains

Recent work has pointed to polymer miscibility and surface energy as key figures of merit in the formation of organic alloys and synergistic behavior between components in ternary blend solar cells. Here, we present a simple model system and first report of poly(3-hexylthiophene)-based random copolymers featuring either a semifluoroalkyl (P3HT-co-FHT) or oligoether (P3HT-co-MET) side chain, prepared via Stille polycondensation. Water drop contact angle measurements demonstrated that P3HT-co-FHT polymers reached a minimum surface energy of 14.2 mN/m at 50% composition of comonomers, while in contrast, P3HT-co-MET polymers increased as high as 27.0 mN/m at 50% composition, compared to P3HT at 19.9 mN/m. Importantly, the surface energy of the copolymers was found to vary regularly with comonomer composition and exhibited fine-tuning. Optical and electronic properties of the polymers are found to be composition independent as determined by UV-vis and CV measurements; HOMO energy levels ranged from 5.25 to 5.30 eV; and optical band gaps all measured 1.9 eV. Following this model, surface energy modification of state-of-the-art polymers, without altering desirable electronic and optical properties, is proposed as a useful tool in identifying and exploiting more alloying polymer pairs for ternary blend solar cells.

Measurement of exciton diffusion in a well-defined donor/acceptor heterojunction based on a conjugated polymer and cross-linked fullerene derivative

We designed a well-defined donor/acceptor heterojunction for measuring exciton diffusion lengths in conjugated polymers. To obtain an insoluble electron acceptor layer, a new cross-linkable fullerene derivative (bis-PCBVB) was synthesized by functionalizing [6,6]-diphenyl-C62-bis(butyric acid methyl ester) (bis-PCBM) with two styryl groups. The spin-coated bis-PCBVB film was cross-linked in situ by heating at 170 °C for 60 min. Surface characterizations by UV-visible absorption, atomic force microscopy, and photoelectron yield spectroscopy revealed that a smooth and solvent-resistant film (p-PCBVB) was obtained. In bilayer films with a donor conjugated polymer, poly[2,7-(9,9-didodecylfluorene)-alt-5,5-(4',7'-bis(2-thienyl)-2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole)] (PF12TBT), spin-coated on top of the p-PCBVB acceptor layer, the photoluminescence (PL) of the PF12TBT was effectively quenched. This is because the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of the p-PCBVB film are nearly the same as those of the parent bis-PCBM spin-coated film. On the basis of the PL quenching results, the exciton diffusion length and exciton diffusion coefficient in the PF12TBT were evaluated to be 11 nm and 9.8 × 10(-4) cm(2) s(-1), respectively.

Surface energy engineering for tunable wettability through controlled synthesis of MoS2

MoS2 is an important member of the transition metal dichalcogenides that is emerging as a potential 2D atomically thin layered material for low power electronic and optoelectronic applications. However, for MoS2 a critical fundamental question of significant importance is how the surface energy and hence the wettability is altered at the nanoscale in particular, the role of crystallinity and orientation. This work reports on the synthesis of large area MoS2 thin films on insulating substrates (SiO2/Si and Al2O3) with different surface morphology via vapor phase deposition by varying the growth temperatures. The samples were examined using transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. From contact angle measurements, it is possible to correlate the wettability with crystallinity at the nanoscale. The specific surface energy for few layers MoS2 is estimated to be about 46.5 mJ/m(2). Moreover a layer thickness-dependent wettability study suggests that the lower the thickness is, the higher the contact angle will be. Our results shed light on the MoS2-water interaction that is important for the development of devices based on MoS2 coated surfaces for microfluidic applications.

The terpolymer produced by Azotobacter chroococcum 7B: effect of surface properties on cell attachment

The copolymerization of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a promising trend in bioengineering to improve biomedical properties, e.g. biocompatibility, of this biodegradable polymer. We used strain Azotobacter chroococcum 7B, an effective producer of PHB, for biosynthesis of not only homopolymer and its main copolymer, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHB-HV), but also novel terpolymer, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PHB-HV-PEG), using sucrose as the primary carbon source and valeric acid and poly(ethylene glycol) 300 (PEG 300) as additional carbon sources. The chemical structure of PHB-HV-PEG was confirmed by (1)H nuclear-magnetic resonance analysis. The physico-chemical properties (molecular weight, crystallinity, hydrophilicity, surface energy) of produced biopolymer, the protein adsorption to the terpolymer, and cell growth on biopolymer films were studied. Despite of low EG-monomers content in bacterial-origin PHB-HV-PEG polymer, the terpolymer demonstrated significant improvement in biocompatibility in vitro in contrast to PHB and PHB-HV polymers, which may be coupled with increased protein adsorption, hydrophilicity and surface roughness of PEG-containing copolymer.

Surface modification and adhesion improvement of polyester films

Facile surface modification of polyester films was performed via chemical solutions treatment. Surface hydrolysis was carried out by means of sodium hydroxide solutions, leading to the formation of carboxylate groups. Three commercial polyester films of 100 μm in thickness were used in this work: AryLite™, Mylar™, and Teonex™, hydrolysis time being the main modification parameter. FTIR-ATR analysis, topography and contact angle (CA) measurements, surface free energy (SFE) and T-Peel adhesion tests were carried out to characterize the modified films. A quantitative estimate of the carboxylates surface coverage as a function of treatment time was obtained through a supramolecular approach, i.e. the ionic self-assembly of a tetracationic porphyrin chromophore onto the film surface. The surface free energy and critical surface tension of the hydrolyzed polyesters was evaluated by means of Zisman, Saito, Berthelot and Owens-Wendt methods. It was shown that NaOH solution treatment increases roughness, polarity and surface free energy of polymers. As a result, T-Peel strengths for modified Mylar™ and Teonex™ films were respectively 2.2 and 1.8 times higher than that for the unmodified films, whereas AryLite™ adhesion test failed.

Polymer films with surfaces unmodified and modified by non-thermal plasma as new substrates for cell adhesion

The surface properties of biomaterials, such as wettability, polar group distribution, and topography, play important roles in the behavior of cell adhesion and proliferation. Gaseous plasma discharges are among the most common means to modify the surface of a polymer without affecting its properties. Herein, we describe the surface modification of poly(styrene) (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films using atmospheric pressure plasma processing through exposure to a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). After treatment the film surface showed significant changes from hydrophobic to hydrophilic as the water contact angle decreasing from 95° to 37°. All plasma-treated films developed more hydrophilic surfaces compared to untreated films, although the reasons for the change in the surface properties of PS and PMMA differed, that is, the PS showed chemical changes and in the case of PMMA they were topographical. Excellent adhesion and cell proliferation were observed in all films. In vitro studies employing flow cytometry showed that the proliferation of L929 cells was higher in the film formed by a 1:1 mixture of PS/PMMA, which is consistent with the results of a previous study. These findings suggest better adhesion of L929 onto the 1:1 PS/PMMA modified film, indicating that this system is a new candidate biomaterial for tissue engineering.
