Abstract
AbstractA series of new paraphenylene-based 2D and 3D tectons has been designed for supramolecular self-assembly on both HOPG and Au. Several versatile chemical strategies have been developed to reach the target tectons, bearing either metaparacyclophane or paraparacyclophane cores, functionalized or not, allowing the obtention soon of more complex 3D tectons bearing functional unit such as chromophores. Moreover, preliminary STM results show that these compounds can successfully self-assemble both on HOPG and Au(111) substrates at liquid-solid interface, encouraging us in finding an universal surface-confined 2D/3D molecular binding motif. This feature combined with the preliminary results of the self-assembly on the plasmonic substrate Au(111) open-up opportunities in the field of Nanoscience.

Abstract
Combination of surface analytical techniques was employed to investigate the interfacial behavior of the two designed lipids-N-stearoylglycine (1) and its bulky neutral headgroup-containing derivative N-stearoylvaline ethyl ester (2)-at the air-solution interface and as transferred layers on different substrates. Formation of monolayers at the air-water interface was monitored on pure water and on aqueous solutions of different pH. Crystallization effects were visualized at pure water by recording the hystereses in the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) isotherms and by transferring the layers onto mica, gold (111), and ITO (indium-tin oxide on glass) electrodes. Subphase pH affects the morphology and patch formation in monolayers of 1, as evidenced by BAM measurements. At pH 8.2, formation of well-ordered crystallites is observed, which upon compression elongate according to predominantly 1-D growth mechanism to form a dense layer of crystallites. This effect is not observed in monolayers of 2, whose headgroup is not protonated. The orientation of layers of 1 transferred to the solid supports is also pH dependent, and their stability can be related to formation of a hydrogen-bonded networks. AFM images of 1 exhibited platelets of multilayer phase. The IR spectra of the ITO substrates covered by 1 indicated formation of hydrogen bonds between the amide groups. The nature of the adsorption layer and its organization as a function of potential were studied in-depth by EC STM using Au(111) as the substrate. A model showing the arrangement of hydrogen bonds between adsorbed molecules is presented and related to the observed organization of the layer.

Abstract
Adsorption structures and interaction of cyclohexane molecules on the clean and hydrogen-preadsorbed Rh(111) surfaces were investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy, spot-profile-analysis low-energy electron diffraction, temperature-programmed desorption, and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). Various ordered structures of adsorbed cyclohexane were observed as a function of hydrogen and cyclohexane coverages. When the fractional coverage (θ(H)) of preadsorbed hydrogen was below 0.8, four different commensurate or higher-order commensurate superstructures were found as a function of θ(H); whereas more densely packed incommensurate overlayers became dominant at higher θ(H). IRAS measurements showed sharp softened C-H vibrational peaks at 20 K, which originate from the electronic interaction between adsorbed cyclohexane and the Rh surface. The multiple softened C-H stretching peaks in each phase are due to the variation in the adsorption distance from the substrate. At high hydrogen coverages they became attenuated in intensity and eventually diminished at θ(H) = 1. The gradual disappearance of the soft mode correlates well with the structural phase transition from commensurate structures to incommensurate structures with increasing hydrogen coverage. The superstructure of adsorbed cyclohexane is controlled by the delicate balance between adsorbate-adsorbate and adsorbate-substrate interactions which are affected by preadsorbed hydrogen.

Abstract
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to study the behavior of n-decane under sub-10 nm confinement between two gold {111} surfaces. This confinement and dielectric medium are characteristic of those used in nanoscale electromachining (nano-EM) processes; thus, it is important that the behavior of the nanoconfined dielectric medium be investigated for better process understanding. Results obtained via MD simulations indicate that, when confined down to a thickness less than 1 nm, the mechanical boundary conditions trigger organization in the n-decane medium, resulting in two distinct molecular layers. The n-decane chains lie flat on the {111} gold surfaces and show preferred orientation in the close-packed 110 crystallographic directions. A 4-fold increase in the maximum local density as compared with the experimental bulk (liquid) density is observed at the interface between the molecular medium and the gold {111} surfaces, regardless of confinement spacing. Radial distribution function curves are used to quantitatively examine organization of the medium into molecular layers. The deliberate introduction of ledges (atomic steps) on the gold surface triggers a preferred alignment of the n-decane chains toward the boundaries of the ledges.

Abstract
Electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM) has been employed to study the structure of a film formed by cationic surfactant N-decyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium triflate (DeTATf) adsorbed on the Au(111) electrode surface. The film is disordered at potentials corresponding to either large negative charge densities or to positive charge densities. At small negative charge densities, an ordered adlayer of flat-lying DeTATf molecules is formed. High-resolution images of this adlayer reveal that the triflate anion is coadsorbed with the N-decyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium cation, effectively forming an ion pair at the electrode surface. This is a significant result because it explains why this surfactant behaves like a zwitterionic surfactant at the metal/solution interface.

Abstract
The adsorption structures formed from a class of oligophenylene-ethynylenes on Au(111) under ultrahigh vacuum conditions is compared based on high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements. The molecules consist of three or four benzene rings connected by ethynylene spokes and are all functionalized identically with an aldehyde, a hydroxyl, and a bulky tert-butyl group. Compounds with the conjugated spokes placed in the para, meta, and threefold configurations were previously found to exclusively form molecular layers with flat-lying adsorption geometries. In contrast, the associated compound with spokes in the ortho configuration surprisingly differs in its adsorption by forming only structures with an upright adsorption orientation. The packing density for the structures formed by the compound with the ortho configuration is less dense than that in conventional self-assembled monolayers while still keeping the conducting backbone in an upright orientation. These structures are thus interesting from the perspective of performing single-molecule conduction measurements on the oligophenylene-ethynylene backbones.

Abstract
The aggregation and reaction of 17,19-hexatriacontadiyne molecules are studied on a Au(111) surface. The molecular orientation and arrangement are elucidated by infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). A vapor-deposited monolayer and a multilayered film formed by adsorption from the solution provide IRA spectra with bands due to the antisymmetric and symmetric stretching of methylenes in the gauche conformation. After the adsorbed film is rinsed with the solvent, however, the spectrum loses the gauche bands and is characterized by the enhanced C-H(distal) and C-H(proximal) stretching bands, which means that all-trans molecules are laid flat. Only STM images for the rinsed film display columnar structures on the herringbones of the reconstructed Au(111) surface; the alkyl chain direction is found to be parallel to the Au atom row. The results indicate that an ordered monolayer is formed first at the liquid-solid interface, and then, disordered overlayers with the gauche conformation are grown but removed by a rinse. Upon exposure to UV light, thus obtained monomer columns are converted into oligomers with flexible backbones and an increased gauche population in the alkyl chains, which resemble red phase polydiacetylenes in LB films.
