Abstract
Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), a bile duct cancer with a high mortality rate, has a poor prognosis due to its highly invasive and drug-resistant phenotypes. More effective and selective therapies are urgently needed. Bacteriocins are broad-spectrum antimicrobial peptides/proteins produced by bacterial strains to compete with other bacteria. Recent studies have reported that bacteriocins exhibit anticancer properties against various cancer cell lines with minimal toxicity toward normal cells. In this study, two types of recombinant bacteriocins, rhamnosin from probiotic Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and lysostaphin from Staphylococcus simulans, were highly produced in Escherichia coli and subsequently purified via immobilized-Ni2+ affinity chromatography. When their anticancer activity was investigated against CCA cell lines, both rhamnosin and lysostaphin were found capable of inhibiting the growth of CCA cell lines in a dose-dependent fashion but were less toxic toward a normal cholangiocyte cell line. Rhamnosin and lysostaphin as single treatments could suppress the growth of gemcitabine-resistant cell lines to the same extent as or more than they suppressed the parental counterparts. A combination of both bacteriocins more strongly inhibited growth and enhanced cell apoptosis in both parental and gemcitabine-resistant cells partly through the increased expression of the proapoptotic genes BAX, and caspase-3, -8, and -9. In conclusion, this is the first report to demonstrate an anticancer property of rhamnosin and lysostaphin. Using these bacteriocins as single agents or in combination would be effective against drug-resistant CCA.

Abstract
Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris C60 is a probiotic strain of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) which induces various immune modifications in myeloid lineage cells. These modifications subsequently regulate T cell function, resulting in enhanced immunity both locally and systemically. Here, we report that C60 suppresses tumor growth by enhancing macrophage function via metabolic alterations, thereby increasing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production in a murine melanoma model. Intragastric (i.g.) administration of C60 significantly reduced tumor volume compared to saline administration in mice. The anti-tumor function of intratumor (IT) macrophage was upregulated in mice administered with C60, as evidenced by an increased inflammatory phenotype (M1) rather than an anti-inflammatory/reparative (M2) phenotype, along with enhanced antigen-presenting ability, resulting in increased tumor antigen-specific CD8+ T cells. Through this functional modification, we identified that C60 establishes a glycolysis-dominant metabolism, rather than fatty acid oxidation (FAO), in IT macrophages, leading to increased intracellular ATP levels. To address the question of why orally supplemented C60 exhibits functions in distal places, we found a possibility that bacterial cell wall components, which could be distributed throughout the body from the gut, may induce stimulatory signals in peripheral macrophages via Toll-like receptors (TLRs) signaling activation. Thus, C60 strengthens macrophage anti-tumor immunity by promoting a predominant metabolic shift towards glycolysis upon TLR-mediated stimulation, thereby increasing substantial energy production.

Abstract
Bacteriocins are ribosomally made bacterial peptides that have outstanding contributions in the field of food industry, as biopreservatives, and promising potentials in the medical field for improving human and animal health. Bacteriocins have many advantages over antibiotics such as being primary metabolites with relatively simpler biosynthetic mechanisms, which made their bioengineering for activity or specificity improving purposes much easier. Also, bacteriocins are degraded by proteolytic enzymes and do not stay in environment, which reduce chances of developing resistance. Bacteriocins can improve activity of some antibiotics, and some bacteriocins show potency against multidrug-resistant bacteria. Moreover, some potent bacteriocins have antiviral, antifungal, and antiprotozoal (antileishmanial) activities. On the other hand, bacteriocins have been introduced into the treatment of some ulcers and types of cancer. These potentials make bacteriocins attract extra attention as promising biotechnological tool. Hence, the history, characteristics, and classification of bacteriocins are described in this review. Furthermore, the main difference between bacteriocins and other antimicrobial peptides is clarified. Also, bacteriocins biosynthesis and identified modes of action are elucidated. Additionally, current and potential applications of bacteriocins in food and medical fields are highlighted. Finally, future perspectives concerning studying bacteriocins and their applications are discussed.

Abstract
There is almost a century since discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming, a century of enthusiasm, abuse, facing development of antibiotic-resistance and clear conclusion that the modern medicine needs a new type of antimicrobials. Bacteriocins produced by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, Archaea and Eukaryotes were widely explored as potential antimicrobials with several applications in food industry. In last two decades bacteriocins showed their potential as promising alternative therapeutic for the treatment of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Bacteriocins can be characterised as highly selective antimicrobials and therapeutics with low cytotoxicity. Most probably in order to solve the problems associated with the increasing number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, the application of natural or bioengineered bacteriocins in addition to synergistically acting preparations of bacteriocins and conventional antibiotics, can be the next step in combat versus drug-resistant pathogens. In this overview we focussed on diversity of specific lactic acid bacteria and their bacteriocins. Moreover, some additional examples of bacteriocins from non-lactic acid, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, Archaea and eukaryotic organisms are presented and discussed. Therapeutic properties of bacteriocins, their bioengineering and combined applications, together with conventional antibiotics, were evaluated with the scope of application in human and veterinary medicine for combating (multi-)drug-resistant pathogens.

Abstract
The intensive salmon farming is associated with massive outbreaks of infections. The use of antibiotics for their prevention and control is related to damage to the environment and human health. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been proposed as an alternative to the use of antibiotics for their antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities. However, one of the main challenges for its massive clinical application is the high production cost and the complexity of chemical synthesis. Thus, recombinant DNA technology offers a more sustainable, scalable, and profitable option. In the present study, using an AMPs function prediction methodology, we designed a chimeric peptide consisting of sequences derived from cathelicidin fused with the immunomodulatory peptide derived from flagellin. The designed peptide, CATH-FLA was produced by recombinant expression using an easy pre-purification system. The chimeric peptide was able to induce IL-1β and IL-8 expression in Salmo salar head kidney leukocytes, and prevented Piscirickettsia salmonis-induced cytotoxicity in SHK-1 cells. These results suggest that pre-purification of a recombinant AMP-based chimeric peptide designed in silico allow obtaining a peptide with immunomodulatory activity in vitro. This could solve the main obstacle of AMPs for massive clinical applications.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common tumors worldwide, with a higher rate of distant metastases than other malignancies and with regular occurrence of drug resistance. Therefore, scientists are forced to further develop novel and innovative therapeutic treatment strategies, whereby it has been discovered microorganisms, albeit linked to CRC pathogenesis, are able to act as highly selective CRC treatment agents. Consequently, researchers are increasingly focusing on bacteriotherapy as a novel therapeutic strategy with less or no side effects compared to standard cancer treatment methods. With multiple successful trials making use of various bacteria-associated mechanisms, bacteriotherapy in cancer treatment is on its way to become a promising tool in CRC targeting therapy. In this study, we describe the anti-cancer effects of bacterial therapy focusing on the treatment of CRC as well as diverse modulatory mechanisms and techniques that bacteriotherapy offers such as bacterial-related biotherapeutics including peptides, toxins, bacteriocins or the use of bacterial carriers and underlying molecular processes to target colorectal tumors.

Abstract
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) can efficiently control different microbial pathogens and show the potential to be applied in clinical practice and livestock production. In this work, the aim was to isolate AMP-producing ruminal streptococci and to characterize their genetic features through whole-genome sequencing. We cultured 463 bacterial isolates from the rumen of Nelore bulls, 81 of which were phenotypically classified as being Streptococcaceae. Five isolates with broad-range activity were genome sequenced and confirmed as being Streptococcus lutetiensis. The genetic features linked to their antimicrobial activity or adaptation to the rumen environment were characterized through comparative genomics. The genome of S. lutetiensis UFV80 harbored a putative CRISPR-Cas9 system (Type IIA). Computational tools were used to discover novel biosynthetic clusters linked to the production of bacteriocins. All bacterial genomes harbored genetic clusters related to the biosynthesis of class I and class II bacteriocins. SDS-PAGE confirmed the results obtained in silico and demonstrated that the class II bacteriocins predicted in the genomes of three S. lutetiensis strains had identical molecular mass (5197 Da). These results demonstrate that ruminal bacteria of the Streptococcus bovis/equinus complex represent a promising source of novel antimicrobial peptides.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that mainly colonizes the nasal cavity and skin. To colonize the host, it is necessary for S. aureus to resist many antibacterial factors derived from human and commensal bacteria. Among them are the bacteria-derived antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) called bacteriocins. It was reported that some two-component systems (TCSs), which are signal transduction systems specific to bacteria, are involved in the resistance to several bacteriocins in S. aureus. However, the TCS-mediated resistance is limited to relatively low concentrations of bacteriocins, while high concentrations of bacteriocins still exhibit antibacterial activity against S. aureus. To determine whether we could obtain highly bacteriocin-resistant mutants, we tried to isolate highly nisin A-resistant mutants by exposing the cells to sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of nisin A. Nisin A is one of the bacteriocins produced by Lactococcus lactis and is utilized as a food preservative worldwide. Finally, we obtained highly nisin A-resistant mutants with mutations in one TCS, BraRS, and in PmtR, which is involved in the expression of pmtABCD. Notably, some highly resistant strains also showed increased pathogenicity. Based on our findings, this review provides up-to-date information on the role of TCSs in the susceptibility to antibacterial peptides. Additionally, the mechanism for high antimicrobial peptides resistance and its association with pathogenicity in S. aureus is elucidated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Probiotics are a group of bacteria that play a critical role in intestinal microbiota homeostasis and may help adjunctively treat certain diseases like metabolic and immune disorders. OBJECTIVE We recently generated a space-flight mutated Lactobacillus plantarum SS18-50 with good in vitro probiotic characteristics. In the current research, we designed two in vivo experiments to evaluate whether L. plantarum SS18-50 had the ability to increase beneficial gut bacteria, regulate oxidative status and ameliorate inflammation in mice. METHODS Experiments I: the ICR mice were gavaged with L. plantarum SS18-50 or its wild type L. plantarum GS18 at 107 or 109 CFU/kg BW daily for one month, during which the body weight was recorded weekly. The feces were collected to determine the abundance of two main beneficial bacterial groups including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium by selective culturing, while the total triglycerides and cholesterols in sera were determined using commercial kits. Experiment II: the mice were gavaged with loperamide hydrochloride to develop oxidative stress and inflammation phenotypes. At the same time, the experimental mice were gavaged with L. plantarum SS18-50 or wild type L. plantarum GS18 at 107 or 109 CFU/kg BW daily for one month. At the end of experiment, oxidative indicators (SOD and MDA) and inflammatory cytokines (IL-17A and IL-10) were measured by commercial kits. RESULTS Results showed that L. plantarum SS18-50 increased the abundance of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in mice after one month's administration. L. plantarum SS18-50 also showed the anti-oxidant activity by increasing SOD and decreasing MDA, and exerted the anti-inflammatory effect by increasing IL-10 and decreasing IL-17A in Lop treated mice. Both the wild type stain and the space mutant had such biomedical effects, but L. plantarum SS18-50 was better in increasing gut beneficial bacteria and oxidative regulation than the wild type (P<0.05). CONCLUSION we conclude that L. plantarum SS18-50 has a great potential to serve as a dietary functional probiotic supplement and/or adjunctive treatment strategy.

Abstract
The focus of the present study was to characterize antimicrobial peptide produced by potential probiotic cultures of Enterococcus durans DB-1aa (MCC4243), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Cu2-PM7 (MCC4246) and Limosilactobacillus fermentum Cu3-PM8 (MCC4233) against Staphylococus aureus MTCC 96 and Escherichia coli MTCC118. The growth kinetic assay revealed 24 h of incubation to be optimum for bacteriocin production. The partially purified compound of all the three selected cultures after ion-exchange chromatography was found to be thermoresistant and stable under a wide range of pH. The compound was sensitive to proteinase-K, but resistant to trypsin, α-amylase and lipase. Comparatively, bacteriocins from L. fermentum Cu3-PM8 and L. plantarum Cu2-PM7 showed higher stability under studied parameter, hence was taken up for further investigation. The apparent molecular weight of bacteriocin from L. fermentum MCC4233 and L. plantarum MCC4246 was found to be 3.5 kDa. Further, plantaricin gene from MCC4246 was characterized in silico. The translated partial amino acid sequence of the plnA gene in MCC4246 displayed 48 amino acids showing 100 % similarity with plantaricin A of Lactobacillus plantarum (WP_0036419). The sequence revealed 7 β sheets, 6 α sheets, 6 predicted coils and 9 predicted turns. The predicted properties of the peptide included an isoelectric point of 10.82 and a hydrophobicity of 48.6 %. The molecular approach of using Geneious Prime software and protein prediction data base for characterization of bacteriocin is novel and predicts "KSSAYSLQMGATAIKQVKKLFKKWGW" to be a peptide responsible for antimicrobial activity. The study provides information about a broad spectrum bacteriocin in native probiotic culture and paves a way towards its application in functional foods as a biopreservative agent.

Abstract
Streptococcus mutans produces bacteriocins that show antibacterial activity against several bacteria. However, comprehensive analysis of these bacteriocins has not been well done. In this study, we isolated 125 S. mutans strains from volunteers and determined their whole genome sequence. Based on the genome analysis, the distribution of each bacteriocin gene (mutacins I-IV, K8 and Smb) was investigated. We found 17, 5, and 2 strains showing 100% matches with mutacin I, mutacin II and mutacin III, respectively. Five mutacin III-positive strains had 2 mismatches compared to mature mutacin III. In 67 mutacin IV-positive strains, 38 strains showed 100% match with mutacin IV, while 29 strains showed some variations. In 23 mutacin K8- and 32 mutacin Smb-positive strains, all except one mutacin K8-positive strain showed 100% match with the mature peptides. Among 125 strains, 84 (65.1%), 26 (20.2%), and 5 (3.9%) strains were positive for one, two and three bacteriocin genes, respectively. Then, the antibacterial activity against oral streptococci and other oral bacterial species was investigated by using bacteriocin gene single-positive strains. Each bacteriocin gene-positive strain showed a different pattern of antibacterial activity. These results speculate that individual S. mutans strains may affect the bacterial composition of dental plaques.

Abstract
Tyramine is one of the most toxic biogenic amines and it is produced commonly by lactic acid bacteria in fermented food products. In present study, we investigated the influence of selected nisin-producing Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis strains and their cell-free supernatants (CFSs) on tyramine production by four Lactobacillus and two Lactiplantibacillus strains isolated from cheese and beer. Firstly, we examined the antimicrobial effect of the CFSs from twelve Lactococcus strains against tested tyramine producers by agar-well diffusion assay. Six Lactococcus strains whose CFSs showed the highest antimicrobial effect on tyramine producers were further studied. Secondly, we investigated the influence of the selected six Lactococcus strains and their respective CFSs on tyramine production by tested Lactobacillus and Lactiplantibacillus strains in MRS broth supplemented with 2 g.L-1 of l-tyrosine. Tyramine production was monitored by HPLC-UV. The tyramine formation of all tested Lactobacillus and Lactiplantibacillus strains was not detected in the presence of Lc. lactis subsp. lactis CCDM 71 and CCDM 702, and their CFSs. Moreover, the remainder of the investigated Lactococcus strains (CCDM 670, CCDM 686, CCDM 689 and CCDM 731) and their CFSs decreased tyramine production significantly (P < 0.05) - even suppressing it completely in some cases - in four of the six tested tyramine producing strains.

Abstract
Nosocomial infections caused by enterococci are an ongoing global threat. Thus, finding therapeutic agents for the treatment of such infections are crucial. Some Enterococcus faecalis strains are able to produce antimicrobial peptides called bacteriocins. We analyzed 65 E. faecalis isolates from 43 food samples and 22 clinical samples in Egypt for 17 common bacteriocin-encoding genes of Enterococcus spp. These genes were absent in 11 isolates that showed antimicrobial activity putatively due to bacteriocins (three from food, including isolate OS13, and eight from clinical isolates). The food-isolated E. faecalis OS13 produced bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) named enterocin OS13, which comprised two peptides (enterocin OS13α OS13β) that inhibited the growth of antibiotic-resistant nosocomial E. faecalis and E. faecium isolates. The molecular weights of enterocin OS13α and OS13β were determined as 8079 Da and 7859 Da, respectively, and both were heat-labile. Enterocin OS13α was sensitive to proteinase K, while enterocin OS13β was resistant. Characterization of E. faecalis OS13 isolate revealed that it belonged to sequence type 116. It was non-hemolytic, bile salt hydrolase-negative, gelatinase-positive, and sensitive to ampicillin, penicillin, vancomycin, erythromycin, kanamycin, and gentamicin. In conclusion, BLIS as enterocin OS13α and OS13β represent antimicrobial agents with activities against antibiotic-resistant enterococcal isolates.

Peptide Extracts from Native Lactic Acid Bacteria Generate Ghost Cells and Spheroplasts upon Interaction with Salmonella enterica, as Promising Food Antimicrobials. Abstract
Protecting foods from contamination applying peptides produced by lactic acid bacteria is a promising strategy to increase the food quality and safety. Interacting with the pathogen membranes might produce visible changes in shape or cell wall damage. Previously, we showed that the peptides produced by Lactobacillus plantarum UTNGt2, Lactobacillus plantarum UTNCys5-4, and Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis UTNGt28 exhibit a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against several foodborne pathogens in vitro. In this study, their possible mode of action against the commensal microorganism Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica ATCC51741 was investigated. The target membrane permeability was determined by detection of beta-galactosidase release from ONPG (o-nitro-phenyl-L-D-galactoside) substrate and changes in the whole protein profile indicating that the peptide extracts destroy the membrane integrity and may induce breaks in membrane proteins to some extent. The release of aromatic molecules such as DNA/RNA was detected after the interaction of Salmonella with the peptide extract. Transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) micrographs depicted at least four simultaneous secondary events after the peptide extract treatment underlying their antimicrobial actions, including morphological alterations of the membrane. Spheroplast and filament formation, vacuolation, and DNA relaxation were identified as the principal events from the Gt2 and Cys5-4 peptide extracts, while Gt28 induced the formation of ghost cells by release of cytoplasmic content, filaments, and separation of cell envelope layers. Gel retarding assays indicate that the Gt2 and Gt28 peptide extracts are clearly binding the Salmonella DNA, while Cys5-4 partially interacted with Salmonella genomic DNA. These results increased our knowledge about the inhibitory mechanism employed by several peptide extracts from native lactic acid bacteria against Salmonella. Further, we shall develop peptide-based formulation and evaluate their biocontrol effect in the food chains.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The quorum-sensing regulation of class II bacteriocin (AcH) synthesis in Lactobacillus plantarum subsp. plantarum Zhang-LL was studied. No detectable inhibition zone was formed by the supernatant of L. plantarum subsp. plantarum Zhang-LL culture in skim milk (SM) with an inoculum size of 7 × 102 CFU/mL after incubation for 36 h. Hence, this culture system was used to investigate the induced regulation mechanism of bacteriocin production in L. plantarum subsp. plantarum Zhang-LL. Bacteriocin production by this bacterium in SM medium was induced by treatment with inactivated culture supernatant from de Man Rogosa Sharpe (MRS) medium (supernatant-MRS). Pediocin AcH encoded by the papA gene in a plasmid in strain Zhang-LL was the inducer present in supernatant-MRS. This is the first report of the role of pediocin AcH in the quorum-sensing regulation of class II bacteriocin synthesis. The mRNA of the papA, papB, papC, and papD genes involved in bacteriocin synthesis by strain Zhang-LL in SM medium was upregulated significantly after being induced by pediocin AcH. This study offers the first evidence that the ABT40_05745, ABT40_05750, and ABT40_11975 components of two-component systems in L. plantarum subsp. plantarum Zhang-LL are involved in the induced regulation of AcH bacteriocin production. Abstract
Background This study was conducted aimed at evaluating the antibacterial property of the recombinant peptide of bacteriocin entrocin P (EnP), the essential oil of Cuminum cyminum, and the extract of Ferulago angulata on some oral pathogens. Besides, the cytotoxicity of EnP was evaluated.
Material and Methods The antimicrobial property was tested on streptococcus mutans (ATCC 35668), streptococcus salivarius (ATCC 9222), streptococcus oralis (ATCC 35037), and Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), using the microbroth dilution method. The 0.2% Chlorhexidin (CHX) mouthwash was used as the control group. Besides, the cytotoxicity analysis was done on gingival fibroblasts by the MTT colorimetric method. The data were reported using descriptive methods, and analyzed by one-way ANOVA, and Tukey’s HSD test.
Results The strongest bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of C. cyminum and F. angulata were observed for S.mutans and S. oralis, respectively (with the MIC and MBC value being 62.5 μg/mL). The antibacterial properties of EnP were comparable to those of CHX, being several times stronger than medicinal plants (1-14 μg/mL). Based on the cytotoxicity evaluation, there was no statistically significant difference observed between the cytotoxicity of the control group and that of Enp for three evaluations, except after 72 hours when the cell viability at the concentration of 3.75 µg/ml was significantly lower than that of the control group (P=0.05). However, no concentration of EnP was observed to be over 50% of the growth inhibition (IC50) of the fibroblasts for the three evaluations.
Conclusions EnP could be utilized in dental materials as a natural and safe antimicrobial agent against oral streptococci and E. faecalis, being as effective as CHX mouthwash. Abstract
Nisin A is a bacteriocin produced by Lactococcus lactis and is widely used as a food preservative. Staphylococcus aureus has the BraRS-VraDE system that provides resistance against low concentrations of nisin A. BraRS is a two-component system that induces the expression of the ABC transporter VraDE. Previously, we isolated a highly nisin A-resistant strain with increased VraDE expression due to a mutation in braRS In this study, we isolated S. aureus MW2 mutants with BraRS-VraDE-independent nisin A resistance. These mutants, designated SAN2 ( S. aureus nisin resistant) and SAN469, had a mutation in pmtR, which encodes a transcriptional regulator responsible for the expression of the pmtABCD operon. As a result, these mutants exhibited increased expression of PmtABCD, a transporter responsible for the export of phenol-soluble modulin (PSM). Characterization of the mutants revealed that they have decreased susceptibility to human β-defensin-3 (hBD3) and LL37, which are innate immune factors. Additionally, these mutants showed higher hemolytic activity than the original MW2 strain. Furthermore, in a mouse bacteremia model, the SAN2 strain exhibited a lower survival rate than the original MW2 strain. These results indicate that the increased expression of pmtABCD due to a pmtR mutation is an alternative nisin A resistance mechanism that also affects virulence in S. aureus IMPORTANCE Recently, the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has resulted in serious problems for chemotherapy. In addition, many antibacterial agents, such as disinfectants and food additives, are widely used. Therefore, there is a possibility that bacteria are becoming resistant to some antibacterial agents. In this study, we investigated whether Staphylococcus aureus can become resistant to nisin A, one of the bacteriocins applied as a food additive. We isolated a highly nisin A-resistant strain designated SAN2 that displayed increased expression of Pmt proteins, which are involved in the secretion of virulence factors called phenol-soluble modulins (PSMs). This strain also showed decreased susceptibility to human antimicrobial peptides and increased hemolytic activity. In addition, SAN2 showed increased lethal activity in a mouse bacteremia model. Our study provides new insights into the possibility that the acquisition of resistance against food preservatives may modulate virulence in S. aureus, suggesting that we need to pay more attention to the use of food preservatives together with antibiotics.

Abstract
Simple Summary The weaning period is one of the most critical phases in a rabbit’s life, when rabbits are most sensitive to various spoilage agents, often with fatal outcome. Preventing these post-weaning alimentary disturbances and improving gut health through the use of natural substances has become an area of research activity in rabbit nutrition. The possibilities of “in vivo” administration of bacteriocins in rabbits are often limited. Our study focused therefore on improving rabbits’ health using enterocin M and sage extract, alone and also in combination, mainly to determine their effect on the microbiota, phagocytic activity, serum biochemistry, and morphometry of rabbits. The antibacterial effect of both additives was observed in the gastrointestinal tract of rabbits. Several biochemical parameters (increased in total proteins (TPs) using enterocin (Ent) M, reduction of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) using sage and its hypocholesteremic effect alone and in combination with EntM, and improvement of mineral levels) were optimized. All additives, but mostly EntM, showed a tendency to improve the jejunal morphological parameters. Abstract The present study investigated the effects of enterocin (Ent) M and sage extract alone and also in combination on the gut microflora, phagocytic activity, blood biochemistry, and morphometry of rabbits. Sixty-four rabbits (aged five weeks, M91 meatline, both sexes) were divided into three experimental groups: E (EntM; 50 µL/animal/day), S (sage; 10 µL/animal/day), and E + S (EntM + sage) groups and control group (C). The additives were administered in drinking water for a period of 21 days. Dietary supplementation of EntM and sage significantly reduced the coliforms (E: p < 0.001; S: p < 0.001; E + S: p < 0.001) in feces, while simultaneous addition of EntM and sage decreased enterococci (E + S: p < 0.0001), lactic acid bacteria (E + S: p < 0.01), and coagulase-positive staphylococci (E + S: p < 0.0001) in the appendix. Sage addition reduced HDL (S: p < 0.001) and LDL cholesterol (S: p < 0.001; E + S: p < 0.001), LDL/HDL ratio (S: p < 0.001; E + S: p < 0.01), and increased urea (S: p < 0.01; E + S: p < 0.001) and creatinine (S: p < 0.001; E + S: p < 0.001) in serum. EntM and sage application, alone or in combination, improve the jejunal morphometry (p < 0.0001) in rabbits.

Abstract
In recent decades, cancer and multidrug resistance have become a worldwide problem, resulting in high morbidity and mortality. Some infectious agents like Streptococcus pneumoniae, Stomatococcus mucilaginous, Staphylococcus spp., E. coli. Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida spp., Helicobacter pylori, hepatitis B and C, and human papillomaviruses (HPV) have been associated with the development of cancer. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and antibiotics are the conventional treatment for cancer and infectious disease. This treatment causes damage in healthy cells and tissues, and usually triggers systemic side-effects, as well as drug resistance. Therefore, the search for new treatments is urgent, in order to improve efficacy and also reduce side-effects. Proteins and peptides originating from bacteria can thus be a promising alternative to conventional treatments used nowadays against cancer and infectious disease. These molecules have demonstrated specific activity against cancer cells and bacterial infection; indeed, proteins and peptides can be considered as future antimicrobial and anticancer drugs. In this context, this review will focus on the desirable characteristics of proteins and peptides from bacterial sources that demonstrated activity against microbial infections and cancer, as well as their efficacy in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract
Synbiotics, which are the combination of probiotics and prebiotics, have recently attracted attention because of their synergistic net health benefits. Probiotics have been used as alternatives to antibiotics. Among the probiotics, Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) has shown strong antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli K99, a major livestock pathogen. In this study, we aimed to investigate the antimicrobial activity of phthalyl pullulan nanoparticle (PPN)-treated LP. Interestingly, when PPNs were added to LP, the PPNs were internalized into the LP through an energy-dependent and galactose transporter-dependent mechanism. Additionally, more plantaricin, a natural antibacterial peptide, was secreted from PPN-treated LP than from untreated or pullulan-treated LP. Furthermore, antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative Escherichia coli K99 and Gram-positive Listeria monocytogenes by PPN-treated LP was higher than those of untreated or pullulan-treated LP. It is thought that the enhanced antimicrobial properties of the PPN-treated LP are due to intracellular stimulation. Overall, this research provides a new method of producing plantaricin in LP through intracellular stimulation by internalized PPNs.

Abstract
Nisin A is a lantibiotic produced by Lactococcus lactis that is widely used as a food preservative. In Staphylococcus aureus, the BraRS two‐component system (TCS) senses nisin A and regulates the expression of the ABC transporter VraDE, which is responsible for nisin A resistance. In this study, we exposed S. aureus to a sub‐minimum inhibition concentration of nisin A and obtained three spontaneous mutants that were highly resistant to this lantibiotic, designated as SAN (S. aureus nisin resistant) 1, SAN8, and SAN87. In the wild‐type S. aureus strain, VraDE expression was induced by nisin A. In contrast, SAN8 and SAN87 showed constitutively high VraDE expression, even in the absence of nisin A, while SAN1 showed higher BraRS expression, which resulted in high VraDE expression in the presence of nisin A. We identified a single mutation in the promoter region of braXRS in SAN1, whereas SAN8 and SAN87 had single mutations in braR and braS, respectively. Interestingly, even the unphosphorylated form of the mutant BraR protein induced VraDE expression. These results indicate that conformational changes in BraS or BraR resulting from the point mutations may result in the constitutive expression of VraDE, allowing S. aureus to adapt to high concentrations of nisin A.

Abstract
Huge demand of safe and natural preservatives has opened new area for intensive research on bacteriocins to unravel the novel range of antimicrobial compounds that could efficiently fight off the food-borne pathogens. Since food safety has become an increasingly important international concern, the application of bacteriocins from lactic acid bacteria that target food spoilage/pathogenic bacteria without major adverse effects has received great attention. Different modes of actions of these bacteriocins have been suggested and identified, like pore-forming, inhibition of cell-wall/nucleic acid/protein synthesis. However, development of resistance in the food spoilage and pathogenic bacteria against these bacteriocins is a rising concern. Emergence and spread of mutant strains resistant to bacteriocins is hampering food safety. It has spurred an interest to understand the bacteriocin resistance phenomenon displayed by the food pathogens, which will be helpful in mitigating the resistance problem. Therefore, present review is focused on the different resistance mechanisms adopted by food pathogens to overcome bacteriocin.

Abstract
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from prokaryotic source also known as bacteriocins are ribosomally synthesized by bacteria belonging to different eubacterial taxonomic branches. Most of these AMPs are low molecular weight cationic membrane active peptides that disrupt membrane by forming pores in target cell membranes resulting in cell death. While these peptides known to exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, including antibacterial and antifungal, they displayed minimal cytotoxicity to the host cells. Their antimicrobial efficacy has been demonstrated in vivo using diverse animal infection models. Therefore, we have discussed some of the promising peptides for their ability towards potential therapeutic applications. Further, some of these bacteriocins have also been reported to exhibit significant biological activity against various types of cancer cells in different experimental studies. In fact, differential cytotoxicity towards cancer cells as compared to normal cells by certain bacteriocins directs for a much focused research to utilize these compounds as novel therapeutic agents. In this review, bacteriocins that demonstrated antitumor activity against diverse cancer cell lines have been discussed emphasizing their biochemical features, selectivity against extra targets and molecular mechanisms of action.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to investigate the effect of Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii CNCM I-1079 (SCB) or Lactobacillus acidophilus BT1386 (LA) on (1) innate immune response, (2) markers of acute-phase reaction, and (3) immune gene expression of rumen and ileum tissues of Holstein calves. Forty eight calves (∼5 d old) were randomly allocated to four treatments as follows: (1) control (CTRL) fed milk replacer followed by starter feed, (2) CTRL supplemented with SCB in milk and feed, (3) CTRL supplemented with LA in milk and feed, and (4) CTRL supplemented with antibiotics (ATB; chlortetracycline and neomycin in milk, and chlortetracycline in feed). Tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) decreased (P < 0.05) on day 66 (post-weaning) for the ATB-treated calves. There were no treatment effects on production of interferon γ (IFN-γ) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) proteins and on expression of TLR4, TLR6, TLR9, TLR10, CLDN3, MUC1, and MUC20 genes. Calves fed SCB or LA had a greater (P < 0.05) oxidative burst at weaning (day 53) compared with CTRL. Oxidative burst was also greater (P < 0.05) after weaning (day 59 and day 87) for SCB-fed calves. Calves fed SCB and ATB had higher (P < 0.05) phagocytosis activity during weaning (day 47) compared with CTRL. The concentration of serum amyloid A2 (SAA2) increased (P < 0.05) in SCB- and LA-fed calves (day 53), whereas the concentration of C-reactive protein (CRP) increased (P < 0.05) in SCB-fed calves during weaning as compared with CTRL. Our results suggest that SCB could improve innate immune response (oxidative burst and phagocytosis) and markers of acute-phase reaction (CRP and SAA2), especially during critical periods like weaning.

Abstract
Plantaricin NC8, a two-peptide non-lantibiotic class IIb bacteriocin composed of PLNC8α and PLNC8β and derived from Lactobacillus plantarum ZJ316, has been shown to be highly potent against a range of bacteria and fungi. In this study, we assessed the antimicrobial mechanism of plantaricin NC8 against the most sensitive bacterial strain, Micrococcus luteus CGMCC 1.193. The results showed that plantaricin NC8 induced membrane permeabilization and caused cell membrane disruption to M. luteus CGMCC 1.193 cells, as evidenced by electrolyte efflux, loss of proton motive force, and ATP depletion within a few minutes of plantaricin NC8 treatment. Furthermore, scanning and transmission electron microscopy showed that plantaricin NC8 had a drastic impact on the structure and integrity of M. luteus CGMCC 1.193 cells. In addition, we found that either PLNC8α or PLNC8β alone exhibited membrane permeabilization activity, but that PLNC8β had higher permeabilization activity, and their individual effects were not as strong as that of the combined compounds as plantaricin NC8. Finally, we showed that lipid II is not the specific target of plantaricin NC8 against M. luteus CGMCC 1.193. Our study reveals the antimicrobial mechanism of plantaricin NC8 against M. luteus CGMCC 1.193.

Abstract
Lactose-derived prebiotics provide wide ranges of gastrointestinal comforts. In this review article, the probable biochemical mechanisms through which lactose-derived prebiotics offer positive gastrointestinal health are reported along with the up-to-date results of clinical investigations; this might be the first review article of its kind, to the best of our knowledge. Lactose-derived prebiotics have unique biological and functional values, and they are confirmed as ‘safe’ by the Food and Drug Administration federal agency. Medical practitioners frequently recommend them as therapeutics as a pure form or combined with dairy-based products (yoghurt, milk and infant formulas) or fruit juices. The biological activities of lactose-derived prebiotics are expressed in the presence of gut microflora, mainly probiotics (Lactobacillus spp. in the small intestine and Bifidobacterium spp. in the large intestine). Clinical investigations reveal that galacto-oligosaccharide reduces the risks of several types of diarrhea (traveler’s diarrhea, osmotic diarrhea and Clostridium difficile associated relapsing diarrhea). Lactulose and lactosucrose prevent inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis). Lactulose and lactitol reduce the risk of hepatic encephalopathy. Furthermore, lactulose, galacto-oligosaccharide and lactitol prevent constipation in individuals of all ages. It is expected that the present review article will receive great attention from medical practitioners and food technologists.

Abstract
Edible films and coatings have been extensively studied in recent years due to their unique properties and advantages over more traditional conservation techniques. Edible films and coatings improve shelf life and food quality, by providing a protective barrier against physical and mechanical damage, and by creating a controlled atmosphere and acting as a semipermeable barrier for gases, vapor, and water. Edible films and coatings are produced using naturally derived materials, such as polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids, or a mixture of these materials. These films and coatings also offer the possibility of incorporating different functional ingredients such as nutraceuticals, antioxidants, antimicrobials, flavoring, and coloring agents. Films and coatings are also able to incorporate living microorganisms. In the last decade, several works reported the incorporation of bacteria to confer probiotic or antimicrobial properties to these films and coatings. The incorporation of probiotic bacteria in films and coatings allows them to reach the consumers' gut in adequate amounts to confer health benefits to the host, thus creating an added value to the food product. Also, other microorganisms, either bacteria or yeast, can be incorporated into edible films in a biocontrol approach to extend the shelf life of food products. The incorporation of yeasts in films and coatings has been suggested primarily for the control of the postharvest disease. This work provides a comprehensive review of the use of edible films and coatings for the incorporation of living microorganisms, aiming at the biopreservation and probiotic ability of food products.

Abstract
The increasing demand for fresh-like food products and the potential health hazards of chemically preserved and processed food products have led to the advent of alternative technologies for the preservation and maintenance of the freshness of the food products. One such preservation strategy is the usage of bacteriocins or bacteriocins producing starter cultures for the preservation of the intended food matrixes. Bacteriocins are ribosomally synthesized smaller polypeptide molecules that exert antagonistic activity against closely related and unrelated group of bacteria. This review is aimed at bringing to lime light the various class of bacteriocins mainly from gram positive bacteria. The desirable characteristics of the bacteriocins which earn them a place in food preservation technology, the success story of the same in various food systems, the various challenges and the strategies employed to put them to work efficiently in various food systems has been discussed in this review. From the industrial point of view various aspects like the improvement of the producer strains, downstream processing and purification of the bacteriocins and recent trends in engineered bacteriocins has also been briefly discussed in this review.

Abstract
<p>Information concerning the virulence factor genes and antibiotic resistance of rabbit enterococci is limited, so in this study we tested the virulence factor genes in <em>Enterococcus faecalis</em> strains from rabbits. Moreover, their resistance/sensitivity to antibiotics and sensitivity to enterocins was also tested, with the aim of contributing to our enterocin spectra study and to indicate the possibility of enterocin application in prevention or contaminant elimination in rabbit husbandry. A total of 144 rabbit samples were treated using a standard microbiological method. Thirty-one pure colonies of the species <em>Enterococcus faecalis</em> were identified, using the MALDI-TOF identification system and confirmed using phenotyping, among which 15 strains were virulence factor gene absent. The gel<em>E</em> gene was the most detected (42%); however, the expression of gelatinase phenotype did not always correlate with the detection of gel<em>E</em>. Strains did not show ß-haemolysis and were mostly resistant to tested antibiotics, but sensitive to enterocins (Ent), mainly to Ents EK13=A (P), 2019 and Ent M. Rabbit <em>E. faecalis</em> strains displayed antibiotic resistant traits and the presence of expressed and silent virulence genes, but they showed high levels of sensitivity to natural antimicrobials-enterocins, which indicates the possible prevention of multidrug and virulent enterococcal contaminants by enterocins.</p>

Abstract
The growing incidents of cryptococcosis in immuno-compromised patients have created a need for novel drug therapies capable of eradicating the disease. The peptide-based drug therapy offers many advantages over the traditional therapeutic agents, which has been exploited in the present study by synthesizing a series of hexapeptides that exhibits promising activity against a panel of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and various pathogenic fungal strains; the most exemplary activity was observed against Cryptococcus neoformans. The peptides 3, 24, 32 and 36 displayed potent anticryptococcal activity (IC50 = 0.4-0.46 μg/mL, MIC = 0.63-1.25 μg/mL, MFC = 0.63-1.25 μg/mL), and stability under proteolytic conditions. Besides this, several other peptides displayed promising inhibition of pathogenic bacteria. The prominent ones include peptides 18-20, and 26 that exhibited IC50 values ranged between 2.1 and 3.6 μg/mL, MICs of 5-20 μg/mL and MBCs of 10-20 μg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus. The detailed mechanistic study on selected peptides demonstrated absolute selectivity towards the bacterial membranes and fungal cells by causing perturbations in the cell membranes, confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy studies.

Abstract
Approximately 100 trillion microorganisms exist in the oral cavity. For the commensal bacteria of the oral cavity, it is important to adapt to environmental stimuli, including human- or bacteria-derived antimicrobial agents. Recently, bacterial-specific signal transduction regulatory systems, called two-component systems (TCSs), which appear to be focused on sensing and adapting to the environment, were discovered. Streptococcus mutans is an oral commensal bacteria and is also known as a cariogenic bacteria. Although the virulence factors of S. mutans have been well demonstrated, the mechanism underlying the adaptation of the species to the oral cavity is poorly understood. S. mutans UA159 has 15 sets of TCSs. Among them, several have been demonstrated to be involved in acid tolerance, competence and biofilm formation. Recently, together with our findings, it was demonstrated that 5 TCSs were involved in resistance to antimicrobial agents. Furthermore, another TCS was associated with the production of bacteriocin. Six of 15 TCSs are associated with antimicrobial agents, implying that S. mutans can survive in the oral cavity by resisting various antimicrobial peptides. In this review, we highlight the role of antimicrobial peptides in the oral cavity.

Abstract
AIM To analyse nutrition-adaptive multiple-bacteriocin production by Weissella hellenica QU 13. METHODS AND RESULTS Weissella hellenica QU 13 produces two leaderless bacteriocins, weissellicins Y and M. Their production was studied in MRS and APT media by quantification analyses with liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS), while transcriptional analysis of biosynthetic genes was performed by real-time reverse transcription (RT)-PCR. Weissellicin Y production was higher in MRS culture than in APT culture, while weissellicin M production was higher in APT culture than in MRS culture. APT medium contains a higher amount of thiamine than MRS medium, to enhance the growth of heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria. Therefore, thiamine addition to MRS culture enhanced the growth of W. hellenica QU 13; consequently, weissellicin Y production was decreased, while weissellicin M production was not affected. Furthermore, real-time RT-PCR analyses indicated that the transcriptional trends of their respective structural genes, welY and welM, were different from each other, and that these two genes' transcriptions responded to nutrition conditions. CONCLUSION Weissella hellenica QU 13 was demonstrated to control weissellicins Y and M production based on nutrition conditions. In addition, differential expression behaviour of weissellicins Y and M indicates that each of them would have separate roles to adapt to different environmental situations. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first report that describes nutrition-adaptive multiple-bacteriocin production, in which thiamine inhibits bacteriocin production while it enhances the growth of the producer strain.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Two-component systems (TCSs) are regulatory systems in bacteria that play important roles in sensing and adapting to the environment. In this study, we systematically evaluated the roles of TCSs in the susceptibility of the group A Streptococcus (GAS; Streptococcus pyogenes) SF370 strain to several types of lantibiotics. Using individual TCS deletion mutants, we found that the deletion of srtRK (spy_1081-spy_1082) in SF370 increased the susceptibility to nisin A, which is produced by Lactococcus lactis ATCC 11454, but susceptibility to other types of lantibiotics (nukacin ISK-1, produced by Staphylococcus warneri, and staphylococcin C55, produced by Staphylococcus aureus) was not altered in the TCS mutants tested. The expression of srtFEG (spy_1085 to spy_1087), which is located downstream of srtRK and is homologous to ABC transporters, was increased in response to nisin A. However, srtEFG expression was not induced by nisin A in the srtRK mutant. The inactivation of srtFEG increased the susceptibility to nisin A. These results suggest that SrtRK controls SrtFEG expression to alter the susceptibility to nisin A. Further experiments showed that SrtRK is required for coexistence with L. lactis ATCC 11454, which produces nisin A. Our results elucidate the important roles of S. pyogenes TCSs in the interactions between different bacterial species, including bacteriocin-producing bacteria. IMPORTANCE In this study, we focused on the association of TCSs with susceptibility to bacteriocins in S. pyogenes SF370, which has no ability to produce bacteriocins, and reported two major new findings. We demonstrated that the SrtRK TCS is related to susceptibility to nisin A by controlling the ABC transporter SrtFEG. We also showed that S. pyogenes SrtRK is important for survival when the bacteria are cocultured with nisin A-producing Lactococcus lactis This report highlights the roles of TCSs in the colocalization of bacteriocin-producing bacteria and non-bacteriocin-producing bacteria. Our findings provide new insights into the function of TCSs in S. pyogenes.

Abstract
A putative gene encoding mersacidin like lantibiotic bacteriocin (lanA) was identified in Bacillus licheniformis genome. The lanA open reading frame codes for 74 amino acids with calculated isoelectric point of 6.7 and molecular mass of 8.2 kDa. The lanA gene was amplified from B. licheniformis MKU3, cloned in pQE30 vector and overexpressed in Escherichia coli M15. The recombinant peptide was purified to homogeneity using Ni-NTA chromatography and the SDS-PAGE analysis of the purified peptide revealed it to be a monomer with molecular mass of ~8.5 kDa. The purified bacteriocin showed wide spectrum activity against gram-positive pathogens. The peptide was found to be stable under in wide range of pH, temperature tolerant and resistant to the proteolytic enzymes. The stable nature of the bacteriocin to high temperature and resistant to various chemicals it also exhibited antimicrobial activity against food-borne pathogens make this bacteriocin as potent attractive antimicrobial agent in food products.

Abstract
A vast and diverse array of microbial species displaying great phylogenic, genomic, and metabolic diversity have colonized the gastrointestinal tract. Resident microbes play a beneficial role by regulating the intestinal immune system, stimulating the maturation of host tissues, and playing a variety of roles in nutrition and in host resistance to gastric and enteric bacterial pathogens. The mechanisms by which the resident microbial species combat gastrointestinal pathogens are complex and include competitive metabolic interactions and the production of antimicrobial molecules. The human intestinal microbiota is a source from which Lactobacillus probiotic strains have often been isolated. Only six probiotic Lactobacillus strains isolated from human intestinal microbiota, i.e., L. rhamnosus GG, L. casei Shirota YIT9029, L. casei DN-114 001, L. johnsonii NCC 533, L. acidophilus LB, and L. reuteri DSM 17938, have been well characterized with regard to their potential antimicrobial effects against the major gastric and enteric bacterial pathogens and rotavirus. In this review, we describe the current knowledge concerning the experimental antibacterial activities, including antibiotic-like and cell-regulating activities, and therapeutic effects demonstrated in well-conducted, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trials of these probiotic Lactobacillus strains. What is known about the antimicrobial activities supported by the molecules secreted by such probiotic Lactobacillus strains suggests that they constitute a promising new source for the development of innovative anti-infectious agents that act luminally and intracellularly in the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is found in a wide variety of habitats, including human skin, where many strains are commensals that may be clinically significant or contaminants of food. To determine the physiological characteristics of resistant strain of Staphylococcus aureus against pediocin, a class IIa bacteriocin, a resistant strain was compared with wild type in order to investigate the contribution of hydrophobicity to this resistance. Additional clumping of resistant strain relative to wild type in light microscopy was considered as an elementary evidence of resistance attainment. A delay in log phase attainment was observed in resistant strain compared to the wild type strain. A significant increase in cell surface hydrophobicity was detected for resistant strain in both hexadecane and xylene indicating the contribution of cell surface hydrophobicity as adaptive reaction against antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to show the differences that could exist at the physiological and structural levels between Enterococcus faecalis JH2-2 (wild type) and three mutant strains resistant to divercin RV41. These mutant strains were recently isolated and characterized for their intermediate resistance to recombinant DvnRV41; a subclass IIa bacteriocin produced by Escherichia coli. These mutant strains were named 35A1 (altered in gene coding phosphoesterase activity), 35H1 (altered in gene coding σ(54) factor) and 36H4 (altered in gene coding glycerophosphodiesterase). The growth and resistance of each strain were tested against lysozyme. The inhibitory substance did not show any cross-resistance but exhibited an additive effect ascribed to the combined action of lysozyme and (P)-DvnRV41. The use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) allowed to unravelling differences at the structural levels between the aforementioned strains. Thus, mutants 35H1 and 36H4 showed clear differences from mutant 35A1 and wild-type strain. These differences were located, mainly in the fatty acid region and in the polysaccharide composition. This study contributes to understanding more the resistance/sensitivity of Ent. faecalis to (P)-DvnRV41, a subclass IIa bacteriocin.

Abstract
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of deaths worldwide, despite advances in its treatment and detection. The conventional chemotherapeutic agents used for the treatment of cancer have non-specific toxicity toward normal body cells that cause various side effects. Secondly, cancer cells are known to develop chemotherapy resistance in due course of treatment. Thus, the demand for novel anti-cancer agents is increasing day by day. Some of the experimental studies have reported the therapeutic potential of bacteriocins against various types of cancer cell lines. Bacteriocins are ribosomally-synthesized cationic peptides secreted by almost all groups of bacteria. Some bacteriocins have shown selective cytotoxicity toward cancer cells as compared to normal cells. This makes them promising candidates for further investigation and clinical trials. In this review article, we present the overview of the various cancer cell-specific cytotoxic bacteriocins, their mode of action and efficacies.

Abstract
Lactobacilli are used widely in food, feed, and health applications. The taxonomy of the genus Lactobacillus, however, is confounded by the apparent lack of physiological markers for phylogenetic groups of lactobacilli and the unclear relationships between the diverse phylogenetic groups. This study used the core and pan-genomes of 174 type strains of Lactobacillus and Pediococcus to establish phylogenetic relationships and to identify metabolic properties differentiating phylogenetic groups. The core genome phylogenetic tree separated homofermentative lactobacilli and pediococci from heterofermentative lactobacilli. Aldolase and phosphofructokinase were generally present in homofermentative but not in heterofermentative lactobacilli; a two-domain alcohol dehydrogenase and mannitol dehydrogenase were present in most heterofermentative lactobacilli but absent in most homofermentative organisms. Other genes were predominantly present in homofermentative lactobacilli (pyruvate formate lyase) or heterofermentative lactobacilli (lactaldehyde dehydrogenase and glycerol dehydratase). Cluster analysis of the phylogenomic tree and the average nucleotide identity grouped the genus Lactobacillus sensu lato into 24 phylogenetic groups, including pediococci, with stable intra- and intergroup relationships. Individual groups may be differentiated by characteristic metabolic properties. The link between phylogeny and physiology that is proposed in this study facilitates future studies on the ecology, physiology, and industrial applications of lactobacilli.

Abstract
A lactic acid bacterium presenting antimicrobial activity against a Lactobacillus acidophilus strain used for eradication of acid inhibition was isolated from a natural cheese. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of the isolate best matched with a strain of L. rhamnosus and was designated L. rhamnosus CJNU 0519. The antimicrobial activity of the partially purified bacteriocin of CJNU 0519 was abolished when treated with a protease, indicating the protein nature of the bacteriocin. The partially purified bacteriocin (rhamnocin 519) displayed a narrow antimicrobial activity against L. acidophilus, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus among several tested bacterial and yeast strains. Rhamnocin 519 in particular showed strong bactericidal action against L. monocytogenes.

Abstract
The fields of immunology, microbiology, and nutrition converge in an astonishing way. Dietary ingredients have a profound effect on the composition of the gut microflora, which in turn regulates the physiology of metazoans. As such, nutritional components of the diet are of critical importance not only for meeting the nutrient requirements of the host, but also for the microbiome. During their coevolution, bacterial microbiota has established multiple mechanisms to influence the eukaryotic host, generally in a beneficial fashion. The microbiome encrypts a variety of metabolic functions that complements the physiology of their hosts. Over a century ago Eli Metchnikoff proposed the revolutionary idea to consume viable bacteria to promote health by modulating the intestinal microflora. The idea is more applicable now than ever, since bacterial antimicrobial resistance has become a serious worldwide problem both in medical and agricultural fields. The impending ban of antibiotics in animal feed due to the current concern over the spread of antibiotic resistance genes makes a compelling case for the development of alternative prophylactics. Nutritional approaches to counteract the debilitating effects of stress and infection may provide producers with useful alternatives to antibiotics. Improving the disease resistance of animals grown without antibiotics will benefit the animals’ health, welfare, and production efficiency, and is also a key strategy in the effort to improve the microbiological safe status of animal-derived food products (e.g. by poultry, rabbits, ruminants, or pigs). This review presents some of the alternatives currently used in food-producing animals to influence their health in relation to human health.
