Personality Types as Measured by the 16 PF

The possibility of isolating personality types using 16 PF profiles was studied by utilizing a Q-type factor analytic procedure. Four modal profiles, characteristic of major clusters of subjects, were derived and cross validated. These four major types successfully classified approximately 2/3 of the 16 PF protocols (n = 1037), and classified similar proportions of previously published profiles. Variation of classification rates as a function of race and sex was described, and strategies for utilizing the profiles for research and interpretive purposes were outlined.

A comparison of MMPI two-point codes in four alcoholism treatment facilities

Compared the frequency of two-point MMPI codes in four different alcoholism treatment facilities. Even though some differences were noted in terms of the different code types, the comparisons were more indicative of the similarity between treatment facilities. The 2-4/4-2 code type occurred most frequently in all of the treatment settings, yet it accounted for only 12--21% of the profiles in any facility. The implication of these findings for describing the "alcoholic" personality and for individualized treatment planning was discussed.

Frequency of MMPI two-point codes in a large alcoholic sample

The MMPI two-point codes of 1,009 male Caucasian inpatient alcoholics were examined. Although the mean profile was 4-2, analysis of individual profiles revealed that 79% of the profiles were classified differently from the mean profile. These findings indicate that alcoholics are a heterogeneous group with respect to the MMPI. Some of the most frequently occurring codetypes seem to be associated with widely different behavioral descriptions, which leads to the inference that alcoholics are heterogeneous with respect to personality characteristics as well.

A comparison of classification rates of the original and revised Marks and Seeman rules

The Marks and Seeman rules for profile classification were compared with revised rules. The rate of classification on a large sample of psychiatric profiles was 16.88% for the original rules and 49.72% with the revised rules. The revised rules will make the codebook applicable to more cases.
