Abstract
Growing evidence suggests that parasite-infected prey is more vulnerable to predation. However, the mechanism underlying this phenomenon is obscure. In small mammals, analgesia induced by environmental stressors is a fundamental component of the defensive repertoire, promoting defensive responses. Thus, the reduced analgesia may impair the defensive ability of prey and increase their predation risk. This study aimed to determine whether coccidia infection increases the vulnerability to predation in root voles, Microtus oeconomus (Pallas, 1776), by decreased analgesia. Herein, a predator stimulus and parasitic infection were simulated in the laboratory via a two-level factorial experiment, then, the vole nociceptive responses to an aversive thermal stimulus were evaluated. Further, a field experiment was performed to determine the overwinter survival of voles with different nociceptive responses via repeated live trapping. The coccidia-infected voles demonstrated reduced predator-induced analgesia following exposure to predator odor. Meanwhile, pain-sensitive voles had lower overwinter survival than pain-inhibited voles in enclosed populations throughout the duration of the experiment. Our findings suggest that coccidia infection attenuates predator-induced analgesia, resulting in an increased vulnerability to predation.

Abstract
Recent findings have identified the presence of transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) channels within the dorsal portion of the periaqueductal gray (dPAG), suggesting their involvement in the control of pain and environmentally-induced antinociception. Environmentally, antinociception may be achieved through the use of an open elevated plus maze (oEPM, an EPM with 4 open arms), a highly aversive environmental situation. Here, we investigated the role of these TRPV1 channels within the dPAG in the modulation of a tonic pain and in the oEPM-induced antinociception. Male Swiss mice, under the nociceptive effect of 2.5% formalin injected into the right hind paw, received intra-dPAG injections of the TRPV1 agonist (capsaicin: 0, 0.01, 0.1 or 1.0 nmol/0.2 μL; Experiment 1) or antagonist (capsazepine: 0, 10 or 30 nmol/0.2 μL; Experiment 2) or combined injections of capsazepine (30 nmol) and capsaicin (1.0 nmol) (Experiment 3) and the time spent licking the formalin-injected paw was recorded. In Experiment 4, mice received intra-dPAG capsazepine (0 or 30 nmol) and were exposed to the oEPM or to a control situation, an enclosed EPM (eEPM; an EPM with 4 enclosed arms). Results showed that while capsaicin (1 nmol) decreased the time spent licking the formalin-injected paw, capsazepine did not change nociceptive response. Capsazepine (30 nmol) blocked pain inhibition induced by capsaicin and mildly attenuated the oEPM-induced antinociception. Our results revealed an important role of TRPV1 channels within the dPAG in the modulation of pain and in the phenomenon known as fear-induced antinociception in mice.

Abstract
I first met Bob Blanchard at an international conference in Paris some 40 years ago. We collaborated intensively during the late 1980s/early 1990s on the ethopharmacology of antipredator defence in wild and laboratory rats, and remained good friends until his untimely passing in November 2013. Bob will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most influential behavioural neuroscientists of the 20th century and, with Caroline, the most eloquent advocate of ethoexperimental approaches to the study of behaviour. In this brief trip down memory lane, I describe when and where Bob and I first met and how, over a lengthy period, he directly and indirectly helped shape my own research career. His profound influence in this regard is illustrated by reference to not only our collaborative research on antipredator behaviour but also my other work on the ethopharmacology of agonistic behaviour, social conflict analgesia, anxiety, and appetite. The element common to all of this work has been ethoexperimental analysis and, for teaching me the true value of this approach, I shall always remain indebted to the big man. Literally and figuratively, Bob was most certainly larger than life.

Abstract
Chemical or electrical stimulation of the dorsal portion of the midbrain periaqueductal gray (dPAG) produces anxiogenic and antinociceptive effects. In rats, chemical stimulation of dPAG by local infusion of the neuropeptide corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) provokes anxiogenic effects in the elevated plus-maze test (EPM). CRF also produces antinociception when injected intracerebroventricularly in rats, however it remains unclear whether this response is also observed following CRF injection into the dPAG in mice. Yet, given that there are CRF1 and CRF2 receptor subtypes within the PAG, it is important to show in which receptor subtypes CRF exert its anxiogenic and antinociceptive effects in the dPAG. Here, we investigated the role of these receptors in the anxiogenic (assessed in the EPM) and antinociceptive (assessed by the Formalin test: 2.5% formalin injection into the right hind paw) effects following intra-dPAG infusion of CRF in mice. The results show that intra-dPAG injections of CRF (75 pmol/0.1μl and 150 pmol/0.2 μl) produced dose-dependent anxiogenic and antinociceptive effects. In addition, local infusion of NBI 27914 (5-chloro-4-(N-(cyclopropyl)methyl-N-propylamino)-2-methyl-6-(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)-aminopyridine; 2 nmol/0.2 μl), a CRF1 receptor antagonist, completely blocked both the anxiogenic and antinociceptive effects induced by local infusion of CRF, while that of antisauvagine 30 (ASV30; 1nmol/0.2μl), a CRF2 receptor antagonist, did not alter the CRF effects. Present results are suggestive that CRF1 (but not CRF2) receptors play a crucial role in the anxiogenic and antinociceptive effects induced by CRF in the dPAG in mice.

Abstract
This study investigated whether the opportunity to avoid or escape the open arms of an elevated plus-maze (EPM) affects the antinociceptive response observed when mice are subjected to open arm confinement. Furthermore, in order to better characterize the relationship between emotion and antinociception in the EPM, we examined the behavioral effects of midazolam injection into the midbrain periaqueductal gray matter (PAG). As our main aim was to evaluate the relevance of different levels of approach-avoid conflict (i.e. the presence of open and closed arms) to maze-induced antinociception, mice were exposed to one of three types of EPM-a standard EPM (sEPM), an open EPM (oEPM: four open arms) or, as a control condition, an enclosed EPM (eEPM: four enclosed arms). Nociception was assessed using the formalin test. Twenty minutes after formalin injection (50 microl, 2.5% formalin) into the dorsal right hind paw, mice received an intra-PAG injection of saline or midazolam (10-20 nmol). Five minutes later, they were individually exposed to one of the mazes for 10 min (25-35 min after formalin injection). Videotapes of the test sessions were scored for a variety of behavioral measures including time spent licking the formalin-injected paw. To examine whether the effects of midazolam on anxiety-like behavior may have been influenced by concurrent nociceptive stimulation (i.e. formalin pretreatment), naive mice were submitted to a similar procedure to that described above for the sEPM test but without formalin pretreatment. Results showed that mice exposed to the oEPM spent significantly less time licking the injected paw compared to groups exposed to either the sEPM or eEPM. Although exposure to the sEPM induced anxiety-like behaviors (i.e. open arm avoidance), it did not result in antinociception. Intra-PAG infusions of midazolam failed to block oEPM-induced antinociception or to alter sEPM-induced anxiety in mice that had received formalin injection. However, under normal test conditions (i.e. in the absence of formalin-induced nociceptive stimulation), intra-PAG midazolam produced clear anti-anxiety effects in mice exposed to the sEPM. Findings are discussed in terms of different emotional states induced by the oEPM and sEPM and the influence of concurrent nociceptive stimulation on the anti-anxiety effect of intra-PAG midazolam.

Abstract
The authors investigated implications of agonistic onset for anxiety and dispersive motivation in maturing wild house mouse males (Mus domesticus). Laboratory-kept fraternal pairs either developed agonistic dominance or stayed amicable during their first 2 months of life, when the authors assessed open-field behavior and dispersal propensity. State anxiety was lower in amicable than agonistic males and higher in subordinate than dominant ones. During subsequent dispersal trials, 1 dominant and 1 amicable male from 2 fraternal pairs were concomitantly introduced into seminatural enclosures containing 3 females. One male invariably became territorial. The defeated males, if previously dominant, dispersed at significantly higher rates than if previously amicable. The authors conclude that agonistic onset during development represents an adaptive behavioral switch from a submissive-philopatric to agonistic-dispersive coping strategy.

Abstract
Ethopharmacology combines an ethological approach to the understanding of the causes and functions of behaviour with pharmacological analysis of the underlying neuromodulatory mechanisms. Recently, this approach has been applied to the analysis of the responses of animals to parasitized individuals and to the effects of parasites on various host behaviours (eg. host defences, mate responses) and their neurobiological correlates. Martin Kavaliers, Douglas Colwell and Elena Choleris explain here how ethopharmacology can be used to address the mechanisms that underlie the often subtle effects of parasites on host behaviour.

Abstract
Adult male rats showed very high levels of crouching when exposed to a cat, with suppression of the nondefensive behaviors (e.g., lying, locomotion, rearing) that were shown by toy cat-exposed controls. The crouching of cat-exposed rats declined slightly but reliably with increasing time within daily 60-min exposure sessions. However, the lack of a reliable cat-exposure x days interaction for crouching over the 20 days of testing indicated minimal habituation of the rats' defensive response to the cat over this exposure schedule, although rat and cat were separated by a wire mesh screen, precluding contact and pain. Following the 20th day of exposure, cat-exposed rats showed reliably higher basal plasma corticosterone levels, suggesting a lack of habituation of this stress-linked response as well. Adrenal weights were also higher and thymus weights lower in these animals compared with controls, while spleen and testes weights and testosterone levels were not reliably different. Of the 13 cat-exposed subjects, 6 (and a single control) failed to show a 10 microg/mL corticosterone (CORT) increase in response to an acute restraint stressor. In 3 of these 6 cat-exposed rats, the failure to meet this criterion was attributable to a low level of CORT following restraint, suggesting failure of the normal CORT surge to the acute restraint stressor. These findings of organ weight changes, enhanced basal CORT, and reduced CORT response to stress in a subgroup of animals are similar to many of the phenomena obtained with other intense, chronic stressors such as subordination, and suggest that repeated predator exposure produces a pattern of intense behavioral and endocrine response that is very slow to habituate. Because it is a natural stressor for both male and female subjects, and one for which pain and even handling of the subject is unnecessary, cat exposure may provide a particularly relevant and adaptable paradigm for research involving analysis of gender effects on the stress response.

Abstract
The elevated plus-maze test has been in use as a rodent model of anxiety for a decade, and is representative of those tests that are based upon the study of spontaneous behaviour patterns and which have high ecological validity. The origins of the test in studies of the relationship between exploration and fear are reviewed, and attention is drawn to the distinct possibility that variation in the pharmacosensitivity of the procedure may be attributable to often extreme methodological variation between laboratories. In considering further this issue, attention is also drawn to the need to collect data under constant test conditions and to provide the minimum database necessary to reach conclusions regarding the behavioural specificity of drug action. Recent research, which has extended the conventional plus-maze scoring technique to include specific behavioural acts and postures (in particular, those relating to defensive behaviour), is described. The value of such an ethological approach to the plus-maze is then exemplified with original data that demonstrate behaviourally selective, anti-anxiety effects of the GABAA receptor agonist, muscimol (0.125-1.0 mg/kg). It is concluded that, when used appropriately, the elevated plus-maze test can be a very valuable tool in drug screening and in the study of the neurobiology of anxiety and defence. More attention to behaviour and somewhat less emphasis on test simplicity and convenience would seem to be warranted.

Abstract
In the field of anxiety research, animal models are used as screening tools in the search for compounds with therapeutic potential and as simulations for research on mechanism underlying emotional behaviour. However, a solely pharmacological approach to the validation of such tests has resulted in distinct problems with their applicability to systems other than those involving the benzodiazepine/GABAA receptor complex. In this context, recent developments in our understanding of mammalian defensive behaviour have not only prompted the development of new models but also attempts to refine existing ones. The present review focuses on the application of ethological techniques to one of the most widely used animal models of anxiety, the elevated plus-maze paradigm. This fresh approach to an established test has revealed a hitherto unrecognized multidimensionality to plus-maze behaviour and, as it yields comprehensive behavioural profiles, has many advantages over conventional methodology. This assertion is supported by reference to recent work on the effects of diverse manipulations including psychosocial stress, benzodiazepines, GABA receptor ligands, neurosteroids, 5-HT1A receptor ligands, and panicolytic/panicogenic agents. On the basis of this review, it is suggested that other models of anxiety may well benefit from greater attention to behavioural detail.
