Photoisomerisation process of self-assembled monolayers of some novel azobenzenes

Preparation of Azobenzenealkanethiols for Self-Assembled Monolayers with Photoswitchable Properties

A series of azobenzenealkanethiol compounds with the structure p-RC6H4N=NC6H4(CH2)nSH (n = 3, 4) was synthesized using a divergent strategy with the two anilines H2NC6H4(CH2)nSAc as central compounds. This strategy provides fast access to a broad variety of the respective azobenzenethiols without (note!) an oxygen atom in the alkyl chain, thus permitting the self-assembly of these compounds onto gold in a predictable conformation, also taking advantage of the previously found odd–even effect in aromatic–aliphatic hybrid systems. Initial experiments indicate that all of these molecules indeed form dense monolayers, in which the orientation of the azobenzene unit is determined by the number of methylene groups in the aliphatic part of the molecules.

Correlation between the molecular structure and photoresponse in aliphatic self-assembled monolayers with azobenzene tailgroups

We have compared the structural and photoisomerization properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) comprising either the trans or cis isomers of azobenzene terminated dithiolane with in-chain amide unit, viz., 4-(phenyldiazenyl)phenyl-4-(1,2-dithiolane-3-yl)-butylcarboxamide ( 1). These films were prepared on Au(111) from solutions of both isomers. Structure and composition of the SAMs were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The photoresponse of the films was monitored in real time by ellipsometry. SAMs fabricated from the trans isomer were found to be densely packed and highly ordered. These films did not show any discernible photoresponse upon irradiation with UV light, which, under favorable conditions, triggers the trans- cis isomerization. In contrast, films prepared from solutions containing predominantly the cis isomer were loosely packed and mostly disordered but exhibited reversible photoreactivity. The results confirm that steric effects, i.e., available free volume, play a dominant role for the photoresponse of aliphatic SAMs bearing the photoactive azobenzene group. The crystal structure of 1 ( trans isomer) exhibits a row-like aggregation of neighboring molecules by weak hydrogen bonds and can be taken as a model for the arrangement of 1 in the monolayer films. Further, in addition to the surface coordination behavior, we have also mimicked the chemisorption of the 1,2-dithiolane moiety onto the gold substrate in molecular coordination chemistry in oxidative addition reactions with the zero-valent platinum complex [Pt(PPh 3) 4].

Photoinduced phenomena in corona poled polar organic films

Organic materials have received considerable attention because of their large dipole moments and optical nonlinearities. The optically induced switching of material properties is important for studying the optoelectronic effects including second harmonic generation. Organic materials for photonic applications contain chromophore dipole which consist of acceptor and donor groups bridged by a delocalized pi-electron system. Both theoretical and experimental data show a reversible highly dipolar photoinduced intra molecular charge transfer in betaine type molecules accompanied by change of the sign and the value of the dipole moment. The arrangement of polar molecules in films is studied both by atom force microscopy and surface potential measurements. To understand the photo response of these materials, their spectroscopic and electrical properties are studied. The morphology and photoinduced surface potential switching of the self-assembled monolayers and polymer films are investigated.

Optical storage and surface-relief gratings in azobenzene-containing nanostructured films

This paper brings an overview of photoisomerization-derived properties in azobenzene-containing nanostructured films produced with the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and layer-by-layer (LbL) methods. Emphasis was placed on the optical storage and formation of surface-relief gratings (SRGs), where the distinctive properties of the nanostructured films were highlighted. For optical storage, in particular, a discussion was made of the higher birefringence induced in LB films from azopolymers due to their organized nature, and of the strong effects from ionic interactions on the photoisomerization of azochromophores in LbL films. The molecular-level control of film properties in the LbL films is described as being responsible for the varied behavior observed in the photoinscription of SRGs, which may involve considerable level of photodegradation depending on the film fabrication conditions and materials used.

Self-assembly of light-sensitive surfactants

This review covers recent advances with an intriguing class of functionalised light-sensitive surfactants. The main chemical classes are described, and the photo-responses in interfacial and aggregation systems are discussed.
