Fluorescence-Detected Pump-Probe Spectroscopy

We introduce a new approach to transient spectroscopy, fluorescence-detected pump-probe (F-PP) spectroscopy, that overcomes several limitations of traditional PP. F-PP suppresses excited-state absorption, provides background-free detection, removes artifacts resulting from pump-pulse scattering, from non-resonant solvent response, or from coherent pulse overlap, and allows unique extraction of excited-state dynamics under certain conditions. Despite incoherent detection, time resolution of F-PP is given by the duration of the laser pulses, independent of the fluorescence lifetime. We describe the working principle of F-PP and provide its theoretical description. Then we illustrate specific features of F-PP by direct comparison with PP, theoretically and experimentally. For this purpose, we investigate, with both techniques, a molecular squaraine heterodimer, core-shell CdSe/ZnS quantum dots, and fluorescent protein mCherry. F-PP is broadly applicable to chemical systems in various environments and in different spectral regimes.

The Influence of a Changing Local Environment during Photoinduced CO2 Dissociation

Though largely influencing the efficiency of a reaction, the molecular-scale details of the local environment of the reactants are experimentally inaccessible hindering an in-depth understanding of a catalyst's reactivity, a prerequisite to maximizing its efficiency. We introduce a method to follow individual molecules and their largely changing environment during a photochemical reaction. The method is illustrated for a rate-limiting step in a photolytic reaction, the dissociation of CO₂ on two catalytically relevant surfaces, Ag(100) and Cu(111). We reveal with a single-molecule resolution how the reactant's surroundings evolve with progressing laser illumination and with it their propensity for dissociation. Counteracting processes lead to a volcano-like reactivity. Our unprecedented local view during a photoinduced reaction opens the avenue for understanding the influence of the products on reaction yields on the nanoscale.

Investigation of the Gas-Phase Photolysis and Temperature-Dependent OH Reaction Kinetics of 4-Hydroxy-2-butanone

Hydroxyketones are key secondary reaction products in the atmospheric oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The fate of these oxygenated VOCs is however poorly understood and scarcely taken into account in atmospheric chemistry modeling. In this work, a combined investigation of the photolysis and temperature-dependent OH radical reaction of 4-hydroxy-2-butanone (4H2B) is presented. The objective was to evaluate the importance of the photolysis process relative to OH oxidation in the atmospheric degradation of 4H2B. A photolysis lifetime of about 26 days was estimated with an effective quantum yield of 0.08. For the first time, the occurrence of a Norrish II mechanism was hypothesized following the observation of acetone among photolysis products. The OH reaction rate coefficient follows the Arrhenius trend (280-358 K) and could be modeled through the following expression: k4H2B(T) = (1.26 ± 0.40) × 10(-12) × exp((398 ± 87)/T) in cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1). An atmospheric lifetime of 2.4 days regarding the OH + 4H2B reaction was evaluated, indicating that OH oxidation is by far the major degradation channel. The present work underlines the need for further studies on the atmospheric fate of oxygenated VOCs.

100 picosecond diffraction catches structural transients of laser-pulse triggered switching in a spin-crossover crystal

We study by 100 picosecond X-ray diffraction the photo-switching dynamics of single crystal of the orthorhombic polymorph of the spin-crossover complex [(TPA)Fe(TCC)]PF(6), in which TPA = tris(2-pyridyl methyl)amine, TCC(2-) = 3,4,5,6-Cl(4)-Catecholate(2-). In the frame of the emerging field of dynamical structural science, this is made possible by using optical pump/X-ray probe techniques, which allow following in real time structural reorganization at intra- and intermolecular levels associated with the change of spin state in the crystal. We use here the time structure of the synchrotron radiation generating 100 picosecond X-ray pulses, coupled to 100 fs laser excitation. This study has revealed a rich variety of structural reorganizations, associated with the different steps of the dynamical process. Three consecutive regimes are evidenced in the time domain: 1) local molecular photo-switching with structural reorganization at constant volume, 2) volume relaxation with inhomogeneous distribution of local temperatures, 3) homogenization of the crystal in the transient state 100 µs after laser excitation. These findings are fundamentally different from those of conventional diffraction studies of long-lived photoinduced high spin states. The time-resolution used here with picosecond X-ray diffraction probes different physical quantities on their intrinsic time-scale, shedding new light on the successive processes driving macroscopic switching in a functionalized material. These results pave the way for structural studies away from equilibrium and represent a first step toward femtosecond crystallography.

Photogeneration of two metastable NO linkage isomers with high populations of up to 76% in trans-[RuCl(py)4(NO)][PF6]2·½H2O

Two light-induced metastable NO linkage isomers with oxygen-bound (SI) and side-on configuration (SII) of NO are generated in trans-[RuCl(py)(4)(NO)][PF(6)](2).(1/2)H(2)O. Irradiation by light in the blue-green spectral range (450-530 nm) leads to the population of SI. A further irradiation by near infrared light (920-1100 nm) transfers SI into SII at temperatures below 150 K. The heat release during the thermal decay of the linkage isomers shows that SI and SII are separated from the ground state (GS) by potential barriers of E(A)(SI) = 0.70(3) eV and E(A)(SII) = 0.38(3) eV, and are energetically situated at 1.42(6) eV and 1.07(7) eV above the ground state, respectively. Maximum populations of 76% for SI and of 56% for SII can be generated, as determined by the decrease of the nu(NO) stretching absorption band of the ground state. The nu(NO) stretching vibration shifts to lower energies by 143 cm(-1) in SI and by 300 cm(-1) in SII, indicating that the linkage isomers are of the same type as found in other octahedrally coordinated transition-metal nitrosyl complexes. The experimental observations are in agreement with results from calculations by the density functional theory, which predict that the metastable states correspond to a side-on bonded (SII) and an isonitrosyl (SI) configuration of the NO ligand. The calculations provide the energy minima of the ground state and the metastable states SI and SII as well as the saddle points along the reaction coordinate Q. This reaction coordinate corresponds to a rotation of the NO ligand by about 90 degrees (SII) and 180 degrees (SI), and therefore allows the comparison between observed and calculated activation energies.

Femtochemistry of Norrish type-I reactions: IV. Highly excited ketones--experimental

Femtosecond dynamics of Norrish type-I reactions of cyclic and acyclic ketones have been investigated in real time for a series of 13 compounds using femtosecond-resolved time-of-flight mass spectrometry. A general physical description of the ultrafast processes of ketones excited into a high-lying Rydberg state is presented. It accounts not only for the results that are presented herein but also for the results of previously reported studies. For highly excited ketones, we show that the Norrish type-I reaction is nonconcerted, and that the first bond breakage occurs along the effectively repulsive S2 surface involving the C-C bond in a manner which is similar to that of ketones in the S1 state (E. W.-G. Diau et al. ChemPhysChem 2001, 2, 273-293). The experimental results show that the wave packet motion out of the initial Franck-Condon region and down to the S2 state can be resolved. This femtosecond (fs) internal conversion from the highly excited Rydberg state to the S2 state proceeds through conical intersections (Rydberg-valence) that are accessed through the C=O stretching motion. In one of these conical intersections, the internal energy is guided into an asymmetric stretching mode. This explains the previously reported pronounced nonstatistical nature of the reaction. The second bond breakage involves an excited-state acyl radical and occurs on a time scale that is up to one order of magnitude longer than the first. We discuss the details regarding the ion chemistry, which determines the appearance of the mass spectra that arise from ionization on the fs time scale. The experimental results presented here, aided by the theoretical work reported in paper III, provide a unified picture of Norrish reactions on excited states and on the ground-state potential energy surfaces.
